URMC has a constellation of facilities, including Strong Memorial Hospital, Golisano Children’s Hospital, Wilmot Cancer Center, Eastman Institute for Oral Health, the School of Medicine and Dentistry, the School of Nursing, Highland Hospital and medical centers throughout the region. The former Lakeside Memorial Hospital in Brockport is a freestanding emergency department under URMC, the first of its kind in Upstate New York. UR recently opened the greatly expanded Golisano Children’s Hospital. U.S. News & World Report ranks it among the nation’s best in a number of treatment areas. With 52 private rooms and a 68-bed NICU, it is one of the best in the country. UR’s Wilmot Cancer Center is a comprehensive cancer hospital providing a continuum of care. A $60.1 million expansion of the center in 2012 added more than 100,000 square feet. URMC lands major grants for research; cardiology and AIDS drug research are long-time strengths at the medical center. U.S. News & World Report consistently ranks Strong among the best hospitals in the nation. It is known for cardiac care and operates the only heart transplant program in Western New York. Highland is known for its comprehensive women’s services, nationally ranked geriatrics program, gastric bypass program, orthopedic surgery and Evarts Joint Center. Rochester General Health System and Unity Health System merged in 2014 to form Rochester Regional 48
Health. RGHS brought eight affiliates to the union. Its Sands-Constellation Heart Institute is an affiliate of the Cleveland Clinic Heart Surgery Center, ranked No. 1 in the country by U.S. News & World Report. The heart institute ranks first in New York for major cardiac surgery (third in the nation) and for cardiac care in a 2012 report by CareChex. Unity Health System brought more than 70 locations into the merger. Key programs include the Joint Replacement Center, Family Birth Place, Spine Center, Diabetes Center, Stroke Center, Brain Injury & Physical Rehabilitation, and Chemical Dependency. Other Rochester institutions play important roles in the medical arena. Investments in imaging and optics, for example, have led to collaborative endeavors, research and, ultimately, products that contribute powerfully to medical diagnosis and treatment. Livability and security contribute to the region’s healthy lifestyle. Short commutes and moderate living costs earned Rochester the No. 2 spot on a 2014 CNN Money list of 10 least stressed-out cities. The region ranked No. 6 on the 2012 Sperling list of most secure large cities and fifth in Kiplinger’s 2012 list of best cities for families. And then there’s the weather: The Weather Channel in 2012 found Rochester to be one of the two safest cities in the Northeast for weather and one of the safest nationally.
