Coming Soon

A new era for Audi Premium means more. And it’s this ‘more’ that Audi is delivering from 2018 onwards. Presenting every aspect of this new brand promise – you’ll receive more from the car itself, more from the company and even more social engagement. Audi has a huge opportunity to truly inspire people with Vorsprung - or ‘advancement’ and the best technologies. Our new flagship, the A8, pushes the benchmarks for design, sportiness, comfort and operation further on towards a premium future. With its intelligent systems and technologies, Audi AI is paving the way towards fully automated driving and is

evolving into an empathetic personal companion in the context of mobility. By the middle of 2018, Audi will present new generations of four more core model series. In addition, expect an expanded product offering in the top segments this year with the Audi Q8 and the fully electric Audi e-tron. Tomorrow’s premium car will think with us, make our lives easier and save us time. With the digital revolution comes a changed set of values. Audi is seamlessly integrating its customers’ modern lifestyle, creating for them a personal space in a sustainable world.

Introducing our naming system In a world turning electric, Audi is forging the path towards power in place of size when talking engines. Expect all future models to reflect brake horsepower on the badging rather than engine displacement. Admittedly a bold move, but one which will have the desired effect of sharing the extra performance offered by electrified cars – which include hybrids, plug-in hybrids and fully electric vehicles – and make its range easier to understand for everyone. Flashing the new numbers on it’s rear, the first model to use the new naming system, the new A8 luxury saloon and a 3.0-litre TDI diesel will instead be known as the 50 TDI, while

the 3.0-litre TFSI petrol will be called the 55 TFSI. Fear not Audi lovers, Sporty S and RS versions, as well as the R8 sports car, will retain their classic badges and the actual names of the models across the range won’t change. Ahead of adding more electric models to the range, this system will better show the capabilities of the new e-tron SUV – expected to wear a ‘60’ badge earned from the 496PS electric motor. There will be a 55-badged range of models and, while Audi has yet to release power brackets for those models, it’s likely to be used for cars with 328 - 468PS. The usual TDI, TFSI or e-tron badges will continue to be used, denoting whether a car features a diesel, petrol or electric powertrain respectively.

Coming Soon: New to the Q Range The Audi

Q2

Still in it’s youth, a year on Audi is broadening the appeal of its Q2 compact SUV with the addition of a new 190PS 2.0-litre TFSI version. Notable not only as the most powerful in the range but also as the first petrol-powered model to be underpinned by surefooted quattro all-wheel-drive. While it may reach 62 mph from standing in 6.5 seconds, the title as quickest is sure to be beaten by the highly anticipated potential SQ2 later in the year.

An alternative to the diesel quattro, the new Q2 2.0-litre TFSI quattro 190PS S tronic is now available in S line and Edition #1 specification. Marking out the S line are LED headlights, an LED interior lighting pack, S line exterior and interior styling cues including Sport Seats and 18-inch alloy wheels. An altogether more impactful specification extends to the Edition #1 - a unique model in its own right.

In addition to the 19-inch Audi Sport alloy wheels and Quantum grey paint, which is used exclusively here, a black styling pack and Manhattan grey contrast bumpers, wheel arch trims, side skirts and bumper inserts all serve to mark out this model from the rest. Brilliant black C-pillar blades featuring the Audi rings complete the look.

New Audi

Q3 Kept under wraps and under tons of speculation, the new Q3 will be revealed within the year. A wider, redesigned grille will feature new headlights to bring it in line with the new design era debuted with the A8. There’ll be an all-new cabin and platform to bring the Q3 right up to date with the rest of the Audi line-up. The current model’s busy dashboard and centre console design will make way for a far slicker and more ergonomic layout, inspired by the larger Q5. Audi’s Virtual Cockpit display will replace the conventional instrument cluster behind the steering wheel, while a dashboard that is designed horizontally rather than vertically will increase the visual width of the cabin. Big changes are anticipated under the skin too. The new chassis opens up a range of new engine possibilities for the Q3, with the most significant being a plug-in hybrid e-tron, although it’s not likely to arrive immediately. The powertrain is expected to comprise a 1.4-litre TFSI engine and an electric motor, which combine to deliver official economy of over 150 mpg with CO2 emissions below 40g/km.

6

Robinsons Audi Magazine

The Audi

SQ5 The curved shoulder line and flared wheel arches give the Audi Q5 a profile that’s unmistakable, and there’s more coming for the line in 2018. The SQ5 TFSI entered showrooms at the middle of last year, getting its power from the turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine. Now, this performance SUV will be available with a diesel engine – yet to be announced.

The

Q8 Concept An elegant alternative to the robust presence of a classic SUV, this is a glimpse into the future of the full-size segment. Ground-breaking drive system technology is coupled with an accentuated sporty look. The 3.0-litre TFSI six-cylinder engine featuring a mild hybrid system and an electric powered compressor is a world first. The Q8 sport concept drive system with its V6 TFSI and additional electric 48-volt electrical system supplies the performance of a true eight-cylinder engine, yet with the fuel consumption of a frugal four-cylinder. The infamous quattro permanent all-wheel drive

system transfers power to the road with supreme control. Technology found among the luxury-class will feature in this next-generation sports utility vehicle. Adaptive Air Suspension Sport allows for a broad spectrum of ride characteristics, ranging from cushioned cruising to firm and tight handling. Furthermore, it sets the ground clearance in five levels with 3.5-inch height differences, selecting the ideal level in each case. The Q8 will combine great spaciousness despite the sloping, CoupĂŠ-like roofline - with emotive design. Offering the latest technologies in assistance and infotainment systems, the Q8 uses large

touchscreens in the cockpit and is rounded out by an expanded version of the Audi Virtual Cockpit and a contact-analogue

Head-up Display. The latter uses intelligent augmented reality technology that merges the real and the virtual worlds.

The Audi

e-tron Presenting an all-electric, luxury-class sport utility vehicle, the Audi e-tron will fire the starting gun on a range of three, full-EVs under the new e-tron badge due by 2020. Given the enduring popularity of SUVs, it's a nod to the customer expectation that Audi would combine this popular bodystyle with electric propulsion. Powered by three electric motors, the e-tron will use two to drive the rear wheels,

while the third powers the front. With a range of at least 311 miles, this SUV model will be revealed later in the year, plus a Sportback e-tron will be hitting production in 2019.

Slotting between the Q5 and Q7 size line-up and anticipated to share the new design era Audi is forging, the design remains under wraps. The profile of the production e-tron chimes nicely with the overall shape

presented on the 2015 concept car, albeit with design elements slightly toned down. A more conventional face in line with the SUV family is expected, while the rugged, cladded side skirts have also been toned down.

What is Audi AI? The new cipher for a variety of innovative systems that relieve strain on drivers and simultaneously offer them new possibilities for their time spent in the car. To this end, Audi AI also uses strategies and technologies from the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Audi AI: With intelligence and empathy Audi AI systems are capable of learning and thinking, whilst also being proactive and personal. Continuously interacting with both the surroundings and occupants, a car beholden to AI can adapt better than ever before to individual requirements.

Audi AI creates new forms of freedom for drivers and passengers by reducing the complexity of their interaction with the vehicle and with other road users. In the new Audi A8, the Audi AI Traffic-jam Pilot will be the first system in the world allowing for highly

automated driving at Level 3. Level 3 means: in certain situations, the car takes over the task of driving. On highways and multi-lane motorways with a physical barrier separating the two directions of traffic, the Audi AI Traffic-jam Pilot will drive in slow-moving traffic

up to 37 mph. The system handles starting from a stop, accelerating, steering and braking in its lane. The driver needs merely to be in a position to take back control once they are requested to do so.

Autonomous, Level 4 driving, is on course for the future of motoring with the four-door design vision Audi AIcon. The new Audi A8 presents our most advanced technologies available today, conceiving a car like no other. Silently cruising the outskirts of Norwich on a frost-bitten morning, the A8 is scanning the road to keep us within the marked lanes, checking for other road-users paying less attention and wandering into our path, and even collecting images and data on bumps and potholes. Every 18 seconds a camera generates road surface information, so the suspension can anticipate and adapt to provide a perfectly smooth ride. Technology so subtle, you could miss it entirely. Instead, immerse yourself in Audi AI; and the continuous artificial intelligence working

behind the scenes will prick your senses and leave you feeling utterly awestruck. This is the first production car developed specifically for highly automated driving and when you know what it is capable of, driving the A8 will be an entirely unique experience. Incredibly, it is not only the Audi AI systems which make this the finest luxury car to drive. A Saloon car of this size may feel cumbersome on climbs or bends, but the all-new A8 once again feels completely at home. It’s nimble, assured, and so poised that you almost forget about the 17ft of length. Although you won’t be able to feel it, the new Dynamic all-wheel

steering system takes the stress out of tight manoeuvres and allows us to relax on an otherwise icy and tense morning. This system turns the rear wheels in the opposite direction to the front wheels to reduce the turning circle on a bend, or in the same direction to enhance agility. Coupled with quattro, the A8 provides ultimate stability. Unwilling to hide our most intelligent systems-to-date under a familiar veil; the exterior design of the Audi A8 marks the start of a new era for the entire brand. A progressive status is achieved through a flowing, elongated

and muscular body design, which debuts a full-length light strip at the rear. Further radiating a powerful presence, the lighting is state-of-the-art. HD Matrix LED headlights calculate appropriate lighting which can then dip to avoid dazzling other road users and creates high-resolution corridors of light on either side of oncoming vehicles. Opt for the innovative OLED technology in the rear lights to enable new light scenarios to be admired, thanks to the impressive display of geometric shapes that are

upper 10.1-inch display features new, concise graphics and when off, blends almost invisibly into the high-gloss black surround thanks to its black-panel look.

The lighting continues inside, contouring the horizontal lines with ambient glows. When the A8 stirs, its revolutionary operating system awakens to present a centre console void of rotary, push-button controls, instead housing twin touch-screens as intuitive and flat as a smartphone. The

Beyond the MMI systems, the range of equipment and materials is extensive, with every detail radiating superlative bespoke quality. For instance, slide your finger along one of three small, black sensors on the dashboard to engage the electric open-andclose decorative shutters on the air vents;

watching them appear from behind the car’s luxurious panelling. While driving, the A8 will engage with freely spoken commands using an intelligent voice recognition system. A sentence like “Please take me to the Barnham Broom Golf Club in Norwich”, will offer instructions from MMI Navigation Plus, even asking any necessary questions to provide the best route. Accept the directions and see them projected on the road ahead using Head-up Display, including traffic-signs or warnings delivered via Audi Connect. Setting your destination has been achieved without averting your eyes or removing your hands from the wheel. If you did need to take your hand away from steering, this car is designed for conditional automated driving at Level 3. On roads with a physical barrier separating the two directions of traffic, the Audi AI Trafficjam Pilot takes over the task of driving in slow-moving conditions of up to 37.3 mph. The system handles starting from a stop, accelerating, steering and braking in its lane. Intelligent and convenient, you can use AI from your smartphone. Find your way to the new AI button in the myAudi app and watch in wonder as the A8 is able to manoeuvre into and out of a parking space or garage. While the technology is continuously computing an image of the surrounding, to stay in control your finger must remain pressed on the AI button, watching a live display from the car’s 360-degree cameras on your device. The foundation of these high-end systems which infuse the A8 with Audi AI is called the Central Driver Assistance Controller. This innovative system is about the size of a tablet and continually merges the data from the sensors around the car into a differentiated model of the surroundings. In addition to the radar sensors, a front camera and the ultrasonic sensors, Audi is the first to use a laser scanner. This data merger also benefits the Driver Assistance systems, which amount to more than 40 different systems on board the A8. These include the new Cross-traffic assist rear which detects crossing vehicles and alerts you and can even activate the brakes if necessary. Each system makes use of the vehicle surroundings information and can operate more effectively as a result. Audi is pressing ahead with the electrification of its drive systems, beginning with the new

A8 and will very quickly implement it on to other models. The new Audi A8 has both a 48-volt electrical system and a 3.0-litre V6 turbo petrol or diesel engine, with a plug-in hybrid model arriving later in the year. Under the new naming system, the variants will be badged as 50 TDI and 55 TFSI, to better reflect the power of combining an electrified drivetrain and brake horsepower. What’s more, the A8 is able to coast at speeds of between 34.2 and 99.4 mph with the engine off, meaning this vehicle can then travel with zero emissions for up to 40 seconds. Perhaps the A8’s AI innovations, integrated so seamlessly, will be its lasting legacy. But with a first impression of the A8 dominated by its superb interior, its serenity and the way it mastered the road there’s so much more than that. Intelligent, luxurious, agile and intriguingly beautiful, the A8 seems to operate in a world of its own.

The New Audi

Sportback Pleasure and usability. Beauty and brains.

Brains and beauty, they should go handin-hand, and so in the new era of Audi design that is exactly what they do. The new Audi A7 Sportback is a prime example of the brand pledge “Vorsprung durch Technik” fulfilled even more intensely, fusing design and technology in a new language for Audi. Conceptualised using new, innovative ways of working; Audi combines the traditional handcrafted clay modelling with state-ofthe-art CAD and 3D visualisation during the design process. What does that mean for the end result? An integrated, cross-disciplinary collaboration in which technology plays a leading role. With large surfaces, sharp edges and taut, athletic lines, the A7 signals dynamics and progressiveness from every angle. The undertones of sportiness come from pronounced 21-inch wheels and a wider, lower Singleframe grille than that of the Audi A8. Boldly contoured air inlets are crowned by narrow, intelligent headlights on a flat front end. The silhouette is defined by the dynamic Coupé roofline, which drops sharply toward the rear. A curved lip to the rear-end integrates a spoiler, perfectly emphasised by a simple, flat light strip accompanying the rear lights. Press the button to lock or unlock the A7 Sportback and a show of fast-moving light animations play across the 13 vertical segments which form the rear lights and Matrix LED headlights.

Inside, take a seat upon sophisticated Valcona leather in a cabin closely resembling a futuristic lounge. Ambient lighting traces the contours for subtle highlights of space, while the improved panoramic glass sunroof with particularly large glass elements lets more light into the cabin. Reducing clunky details, the A7 has created an atmosphere with a very modern feeling of spaciousness. Gazing across the dashboard, it is clear to see the architecture of this car melds seamlessly with Audi’s new MMI touch response system. The design flows from the Audi Virtual Cockpit 12.3-inch display across a horizontal instrument panel, to present the driver with an ever-so-slightly tilted 10.1-inch upper and new 8.6-inch lower screens. The rotary pushbutton, the conventional controls of the previous model, have been replaced with these two large, highresolution touch displays. The upper display automatically turns on as you open the car, welcoming you to an array of infotainment, and when switched off, it nearly disappears into the dashboard, transforming the cabin into a clutter-free sanctuary.

Opt-for a Head-up Display to see important information, such as speed limit or navigation instructions, projected on the windscreen. The optional voice control in the new A7 Sportback makes operation even more convenient and as intuitive as a smartphone. With MMI Navigation Plus, the natural speech dialogue system processes questions and commands in two ways – with information stored onboard and at the same time with detailed knowledge from the cloud. The Audi Autonomous Intelligence is able to manoeuvre the A7 Sportback into and out of a parking space or garage, introduced by the new A8 in 2017. Besides the Audi AI systems, the new A7 Sportback features a total of 39 Driver

Assistance systems to make things easier for the driver. Read more about AI on page 8 or with the A8 on page 9. A new mild hybrid system (MHEV) comes as standard in the new Audi A7 Sportback. For greater comfort and efficiency, a V6 engine pairs with a 48-volt primary electrical system. The four-door CoupĂŠ will initially launch with the 3.0 V6 TFSI, which produces 340PS and 500 Nm of torque. The sonorously understated V6 turbo sprints from 0 to 62 mph in 5.7 seconds and has a top speed of 155.3 mph. Thanks to the electrification, at speeds between 34 to 99 mph, the A7 can coast in freewheeling mode with the engine deactivated and then restart comfortably.

RS 5 Coupé

A new form of V6 power

As the RS 5 blazes into position outside of an abandoned innercity warehouse, the red-ringed button is hit – stopping the engine - and bestowing an eerie silence. Utterly understated and almost subdued, the secondgeneration model only hints at the power of 450PS from its all-new V6 bi-turbo engine from the outside. Although, sprinting from where we sit to 62 mph in just 3.9 seconds would give the whole game away. Massive air inlets with the black, honeycomb structure, typical of RS models, characterise the front end of the car, distinct from the base model for its wider and flatter appearance. Keeping the headlights turned on against our dull surroundings, the Matrix LED eyes stare out with additional air intakes housed beside them. quattro blisters on the flanks emphasise the pronounced bulges over the

wheel arches, which have been widened by 15 mm. Handling the rugged, uneven terrain on 19inch forged aluminium wheels and primed for four-wheel drive; these additions are not just for looks. As a cargo train thunders into earshot across the tracks, we quickly drink up the sporty appearance from the RS-specific diffuser insert, the oval tailpipes of the RS exhaust system and a surface-mounted spoiler lip and slide back into the RS Sport seats. Bathed in black, the interior is of an extremely high standard and sportily equipped - intense even without the added mystique of our surroundings. Shaking off some of the silence we stole for these ten minutes of pure admiration, control is taken back – one hand gripping the flat-bottomed RS multifunction Sport leather steering wheel and the other used to press ‘Start engine’.

Springing to life and challenging that of the long-gone cargo train, a deep and bassy rumble erupts before settling into an ominous burble. The 2.9-litre TFSI V6 bi-turbo engine, which Audi developed from the ground up, offers sharp increases in power and efficiency as well as that incomparable full-bodied RS sound. Despite finding a quiet place for the RS 5 Coupé to stir our senses, this model boasts everyday usability. An efficiency gain of 17% over the previous model represents a new level of efficiency within the RS family, consuming just 8.7-litres of fuel per 62 miles. The bi-turbo’s power flows through a sportily-tuned, eight-speed tiptronic transmission with optimised shift times. In tune with the drive, special RS displays in the Audi Virtual Cockpit provide a shift light that prompts the driver to upshift upon reaching the rev limit, among information like tyre pressure, torque and g-forces. The sporty driving characteristics

while dynamic, offer optimum traction and best-possible levels of safety for everyday use. quattro permanent all-wheel drive is paired with a revised five-link construction used on the front axle and the same construction at the rear replaces the trapezoidal-link suspension, improving comfort significantly. As an alternative, Audi Sport also offers the RS Sport Suspension plus with Dynamic Ride Control (DRC), ceramic brakes and dynamic steering with RS-specific tuning. Drivers can make their personal driving experience more individual, dynamic or comfortable using the standard dynamic handling system Audi Drive select.

easy and intuitive. The Audi Connect system links the RS 5 Coupé to the internet using LTE technology thanks to an Audi Connect SIM, which is permanently installed in the car. The Audi Smartphone Interface uses Apple Car Play and Android Auto to make selected apps available in a separate MMI menu, used in this instance to switch from DAB radio to a personal Apple Music playlist. Further high-end technologies, such as the Head-up Display and as many as 30 Driver Assistance systems enhance safety, comfort and efficiency. The intelligent interplay between these systems represents another step towards piloted driving.

The return of an RS icon The New Audi A car so impressive, the first-generation production numbers had to be doubled to meet demand on the turn of the Millennium. Having showcased the first ever highly supercharged twin turbo engine from Audi, this model has earned its incomparable history. Now, almost two decades on, the fourth generation of the RS 4 Avant debuted in September of last year presenting a sleeker, wider, smarter model posing, finely tuned performance. Equipped with a 450PS V6 twin turbo engine, it can achieve 0-62 mph in just 4.1 seconds but with 17% less fuel consumption than its predecessor. In common with the elite RS models, the RS 4 Avant blends immense power output with superlative everyday utility. The power of the 2.9-litre TFSI biturbo is supplied to the quattro permanent all-wheel drive via a sportily configured eight-speed tiptronic with optimised gear changing. For targeted control of the power flow, the optional Sports Differential distributes torque from the engine in continuously variable proportions between the rear wheels. With this, the Avant is able to steer even more spontaneously and directly into bends, while producing a far more robust directional stability. In everyday situations - a tight bend or a sudden downpour - it reacts fast, making you feel in control and safe. Not only did the engineers take inspiration from

RS 4

the Audi Sport racing cars, the designers indulged this model in visual signals of power. Massive air inlets with the revered RS honeycomb structure and the wide, flat Singleframe grille define the front end. At the rear end, the RS-specific diffuser insert, the oval tailpipes of the RS exhaust system and the RS roof edge spoiler make for a distinctive look. The new Audi RS 4 Avant travels on 19-inch 10-spoke star forged aluminium wheels as standard, flashing black brake calipers imprinted with the RS 4 logo at the front. And accompanying the Carbon Edition trim in Anthracite matte black are 20-inch gloss milled aluminium wheels with vivid red brake calipers.

Avant

The interior exploits sophisticated materials and stars a digital racing-style cockpit. The black interior underscores the sporty character of the Audi RS 4 Avant. The RS sport seats with optional honeycomb pattern, the flat-bottomed RS leather multifunction sport steering wheel, the shift centre and the illuminated door sill trims are all adorned with the RS emblem. There is no doubt you will be sitting comfortably in the front seats dressed in elegant Fine Nappa leather upholstery, with 4-way electric lumbar support and pneumatic massage function. In the 12.3-inch Audi virtual cockpit and Head-up Display, RS-specific displays indicate the g-forces, tire pressures and torque. Forging 3D navigation, the Multi-Media Interface operates on an 8.3-inch high resolution colour screen and touch control panel. The styling packages gloss black, carbon with aluminium attachments and carbon with black attachments provide further scope for customisation. In typical Avant style, this model has an impressive functional utility for everyday use. In its basic dimensions the luggage compartment of the RS 4 Avant offers 505 litres of volume, which can be maximised by folding the rear seats to a massive 1,510 litres. And for accessing all this space, kick a foot under the rear end which will be recognised by a motion sensor thanks to the Audi electric boot lid release. If the key is detected, the lid will unlock and automatically open without you needing to touch the car.

RS 3 Sportback Step into the world of RS. A world that will disrupt your senses and elevate your expectations from the first acceleration. The RS 3 Sportback is your way in and with it’s track record, you won’t be looking back. Thanks to an awardwinning 2.5-litre TSFI engine transmitting up to 400PS, the RS 3 reaches 0-62 mph in a mere 4.1 seconds. Speaking the RS visual language; recognisable character and dominant charisma ooze from the newest member.

While some call the RS 3 an entry model, the sentence may be drowned out by the sound of the most powerful production five-cylinder in the world. An international panel of 65 motorsport journalists awarded it ‘Engine of the Year’, praising not only the outstanding performance but also the unique sound which comes from having the ignition alternate between directly adjacent cylinders and widely spaced ones. Its characteristic tone is highly reminiscent of the Group B rally engine of the 1980s, with only the electric noise from adoring Audi Sport spectators missing. The quattro four-wheeldrive technology, RS Sports Suspension and an RS braking

system lend a helping hand, to give you a truly intense driving experience. And when it comes to infotainment, link a smartphone into the MMI system using Audi Connect to experience versatile connectivity. Stream music from the Internet or send destinations from Google Maps to the navigation system and see the visual directions thrown onto the Audi Virtual Cockpit. From the cabin, listen to your music delivered from premium Bang & Olufsen’s 705-watt sound system, featuring 14 high-performance speakers including centre speaker and LED-illuminated subwoofer. Relax in the confidence of Audi Driver Assistance aids. In slow-moving traffic up to 40.4 mph, for example, the Trafficjam Assist keeps the car at a safe distance from the vehicle in front and can briefly take over the steering. Also new in the Audi RS 3 Sportback are

the Emergency Assist, which automatically stops the car if required, and Cross-traffic Assist Rear. The latter system looks out for crossing vehicles when the driver is pulling out of a parking space. Highlights from the exterior all show off its power, fronted by a striking Singleframe with a gloss black honeycomb grille emblazoned with the RS 3 emblem. In the rear, a stylish RS roof-edge spoiler, a diffuser insert and the RS exhaust system’s large oval tailpipes are sure to turn heads. What’s more, you’ll step out in style thanks to Audi Beam, projecting an Audi Sport logo onto the ground as you exit. In the cabin, heated Fine Nappa leather front Sport seats give exceptional comfort. So sit back, relax, and feel the reverberation from unleashing that incredible engine power.

vs

Petrol

Diesel

Petrol vs. diesel: Which is better? A question of growing importance and one only you can answer for yourself. The media and social environments are flooded with information which may be directing you towards one or the other with varying degrees of truth. The truth is that there’s no one right answer. It depends on your priorities and the type of driving you do. Diesel cars have recently become subject to considerable negative publicity due to worries over the amount of toxic emissions they may potentially produce. On the turn of the Millennium, car buyers were choosing diesel cars because they produced less CO2 emissions than their petrol equivalents. In turn, this meant road tax for their vehicle would cost less. These older diesel engines, built between 2000 – 2004, fall under the Euro 3 classification era and are now actively being removed from our roads. This reality is far from the current situation; the latest crop of diesel engines are exceptionally clean. All new Audi vehicles meet Euro 6 emissions standards, meaning the current generation of

22

Robinsons Audi Magazine

diesel cars are an impressive 10-times cleaner. Rest assured, the announcement of changes to VED rates on diesel vehicles from April of this year will not come into play with any new Audi model. Now, in 2018, choosing the right fuel for your next car depends on a number of practical factors, not just personal preference. While opting for a diesel car may cost more to buy, they’re also more efficient. Using this as a consideration couldn’t be easier. Flip between petrol or diesel in the Audi comparison tool online to calculate fuel costs. These results show the Audi A1 managing 70.6 mpg in diesel and 55.4 mpg in petrol variants.

So, with your hand out of your pocket and back on the wheel, drivers will notice diesel and petrol engines feel very different to drive. For lower mileage buyers, money can be saved by buying a less expensive petrol car than a pricier diesel car because you won’t own the car long enough to take advantage of the fuel savings. When you take tax and insurance into account, there’s very little in it. Using the Audi A1 as an example again, the 1.4-litre petrol and 1.6 litre diesel being in insurance group G for the former and F for the latter. In their first year, the

diesel is just £20 cheaper to tax, then both cars cost the same £140 in subsequent years thanks to the 2017’s new tax regulations. Servicing costs for the two cars are identical, too. So, with your hand out of your pocket and back on the wheel, drivers will notice diesel and petrol engines feel very different to drive. Petrol engines need to be revved to give their best, so they suit a ‘sportier’ driving style and, by extension, a manual gearbox. While this

is great fun to exploit, it is the diesel engine that provides very strong low-down pulling power, in turn helping them feel relaxing to drive. If you’re regularly loading up with passengers or overtaking on motorways, it is the pulling power of a diesel that will make for an easier life. Adding crucial weight to whether or not you should buy a diesel car, is the legal requirement of Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) and

whether this tech will end up costing you in the long-run. Drivers must periodically run a diesel engine at high speeds for between 30 and 50 minutes to allow the exhaust temperature to increase enough to cleanly ‘burn off’ the excess soot in the filter and clear it. Motorway driving is ideal for this. In turn, this means shorter journeys like to and from the shops, driving about town or shorter, slowerpaced commute would better suit a petrol engine.

Towards the end of 2017, a scheme was launched by Audi nationally to incentivise trading in older diesel cars in support of lower emissions and promote cleaner, more fuel-efficient cars. Totalling over 28 vehicles for Robinsons Audi - every car received from this scheme has been taken off the road and, wherever possible, its materials recycled.

Audi Technologies Your sixth sense

When you’re out on the road, you never know what may come your way. Imagine having a sixth sense which keeps a constant lookout. The intelligent safety features in Audi vehicles will do just that, anticipating any unexpected situations that may arise through no fault of your own. Adaptive Cruise Control Until now, cruise control wasn’t traffic-suitable. With Adaptive Cruise Control, that’s changed. It will slow down your vehicle, keeping you a safe distance from the car in front - even if it comes to a sudden stop. And when the traffic gets going again, the system accelerates to resume your cruising speed.

Pre-sense This smart technology keeps an extra eye on the road. It warns you of objects in front, applying the brakes if necessary. Whether it’s a pedestrian stepping into the road or a car that suddenly brakes, pre -sense will help to keep you safe.

Lane Assist Lane Assist keeps you on the straight and narrow by altering your vehicle when you start to drift outside of your lane, especially at higher speeds. It detects road markings and, should you veer from them, sends a vibration to the steering wheel to prevent you from drifting off course.

quattro Someone ahead of you weaves or swerves. This is where quattro all-wheel-drive comes in handy. It distributes grip where it’s needed, giving you the confidence to manoeuvre safely around wayward vehicles.

Side Assist When changing lanes, you may not see what’s approaching from behind. Audi Side Assist does. Sensors pick up who’s in your blind spot and will alert you before you make your next move.

Cross-traffic assist rear You’re reversing, but there’s only so much you can see in your rear and side-view mirrors. Not to worry – Cross-traffic assist rear will alert you when vehicles cross your blind spot, and even activate the brakes if necessary.

Park Assist If there isn’t a great deal of space, use your Audi Park Assist technology. Taking control of the wheel for you, it will park you into tight spots with ease.

Turn Assist Even when you’ve stopped and signalled to turn right, oncoming traffic may not have spotted you. That’s where Audi Turn Assist helps. It sees traffic coming the other way and stops you in time, in case what’s coming towards you doesn’t.

Approved Used Nearly new, Used cars from demonstrator stock While a vehicle for every model sits in wait at the dealership to welcome a new driver, these demonstrator cars will quickly reach an age for their next owner. An ex-demonstrator is an Approved Used Audi, used on test drives or showcased in the dealership for the first threemonths from delivery. Typically, these are loaded with premium features to help show what is available to the visitors and thus

making them desirable when their selling age comes. Another thing which makes them desirable, the price. Our stock of ex-demonstrators is kept in the very best condition and while the number of miles will be higher than a new car, anything like a minor scratch or alloy scuff will be rectified before you drive away. Unlike our wide offering

of standard Approved Used cars, a demonstrator has just one, single previous owner guaranteed – Robinsons Audi. Choosing whether to upgrade the spec in your brand-new car can sometimes be a balancing act, and you end up compromising. The best features and systems will be fitted on these ‘nearly new’ cars, saving you the cost on those optional extras that you wouldn’t find in the standard version. And there’s no waiting around for your tailored model to be built. Demonstrators are available at the dealership, and can be sold after 90-days.

That’s not the only saving you will make. As these cars have had a short experience before they reach you, Norwich and Lowestoft Audi have discounted the cost they would have been bought new. The offers that exist for added reassurance for Approved Used stock also apply to these select vehicles. Benefits like MOT protection up to the value of £750 and the remainder of the Manufacturer Warranty come as a package with your purchase. The available models in the ‘nearly new’ Approved Used category is continuously changing. If there is a model you are interested in, and toying between new or used it is worth contacting your dealership to find out what will be available and, of course, book that all-important test drive.

News and Events The R8 V10 RWS Dropping the quattro four-wheel drive system, Audi Sport introduces a limited-edition model exclusively built by hand at the Böllinger Höfe R8 factory. With a run of just 999 in a combination of Coupé and Spyder, this exclusive R8 is made for purists with an appreciation for essential driving enjoyment. With a V10 engine and rear-wheel drive, it brings the driving concept of the R8 LMS racing car to the street. The mid-mounted, 5.2-litre FSI V10 engine produces 540PS accelerating from 0-62 mph in 3.7 seconds and can keep going until it reaches 199 mph. A series of subtle styling changes help to differentiate the R8 V10 RWS apart from the R8 V10 quattro, including a matt black grille insert and air vents up front. Red stripes across the bonnet, roof and rear in the Coupé are an option also. As a reminder of the exclusivity, the dashboard bears an emblem ‘1 of 999’ to denote its limited build number.

The chassis and steering system of the RWS has been reworked in line with the switch to rear-wheel drive, and it rides on standard 19inch wheels. The chassis setup and control systems allow controlled drifts if the driver chooses Dynamic mode in Audi Drive Select. The electromechanical power steering is completely free of torque steer and enables precise handling… and incredibly fun driving.

Robinsons Motor Group’s 90th Year Since opening as a Coachbuilders and Paint and Repair Specialist in 1927, Robinsons thrives as East Anglia’s leading motor group 90 years on and remains a local, family-owned business. we offered prizes exclusively from locally or brand relevant suppliers including Morston Hall, Adnams Brewery and Socius Dining. For 90 days this competition was open to the public with winners coming from across the region. For an added touch of excitement, together with a prize, a car could be taken for the weekend. Leona, winner of a Hair and Beauty prize travelled South of Norwich in an Audi TT, sharing: “I have admired

this car for years, so this was such a special experience for me. I just need one of my own now!” Visiting National Trust destinations was made all the better travelling in a brandnew Audi. The new Q5 was taken to Blickling Hall one weekend to kick off a years’ membership and the new Audi A5 took a similar excursion with another family. Further winners await their prize later this year, including Carolyn who will be taking to the track at Silverstone on an Audi Sport day for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Meet the

Team Colm McGilway General Sales Manager, Norwich Audi

When did you join Audi? I started with Norwich Audi in early 2012, having had 13 years’ experience in the motor industry. I actually came to the trade after finishing an accountancy apprenticeship.

What aspects of your job do you enjoy most? I really enjoy the customer interaction. There’s nothing like the satisfaction of seeing someone driving away in their new Audi that you’ve helped and advised them on; it makes the tougher days worthwhile. I pride myself on giving our customers a great buying experience and this is something I consistently discuss with my team - the importance of our customers. Audi strive to have fans of the brand, and I feel my team should have the same mentality, we strive to have fans of Norwich Audi.

34

Robinsons Audi Magazine

What’s the biggest change with the brand you have seen? The brand has always been at the forefront of technology, but since my time here things have progressed even further and are set to continue. There is currently a lot of debate over engine choices and with the advancement of electricpowered engines, I believe a lot of our customers are often unsure on which engine or fuel type to pick. And the truth is there is no exact answer, every customer is different in what they require from their Audi. Finding the right Audi to suit the right driver is what we are here to help do.

What’s the most recent thing you’ve learned about Audi? One thing I’ve learned since being here, is that you never stop learning about Audi, the brand is evolving all the time with development and technology. I recently visited Audi Headquarters to see and

learn about the new Audi A8. This car is the next level in customer luxury, comfort and technology. We are on the brink of autonomous driving, the technologies are available but the infrastructure is not quite there. Safety is key to autonomous driving, and the safety systems being introduced in the new A8 are phenomenal. What’s even more exciting, these will be soon be the standard systems on all our new models.

What are your interests outside of work? My passion outside of work has to be travelling. I’ve been fortunate enough to visit a wide variety of countries on my travels with both my family (son and girlfriend) and also my friends. I’m a keen footballer and like to both play and watch whenever I can, although I’m moving to the twilight part of my playing career. I also enjoy a round of golf and hope to start playing more once my footballing days are done.

Audi is an exceptional brand fuelled by a passion to create the ultimate customer experience, which is why we invest in individuals who can help us achieve our ambitious plans. We’re dedicated to leading the premium car market in everything from product management to people development. So, a career with Audi is, quite simply, a mark of excellence. Meet some members of our team.

Customer Relations Manager, Norwich Audi

Parts & Accessories, Norwich Audi

What did you want to be when you grew up? From a young age I wanted to be a motor mechanic, so when I left school I enrolled on a ‘Women in Technology’ course. I was fortunate to get a placement at Robinsons Autoservices where I worked on both Audi and Volkswagen cars - this was before the brands separated.

When and what led you to work at Robinsons Audi? When Audi and Volkswagen separated in 1994, I was offered the position of Service Advisor in the new Audi showroom. I’ve remained with Norwich Audi, in various roles, ever since.

What sets Audi apart from other brands? Quality, style, technology and customer care. Other brands have these assets but Audi have the right balance.

What do you think is the most important part of your job? Simply put, ensuring that our customers’ needs are met.

What’s the biggest change with the brand you have seen? It has to be quattro. Admittedly, it happened before I worked for Norwich Audi, but I have always followed the brand. The introduction of quattro was a leap forwards in performance and safety which ultimately enabled Audi to become what it is today.

What model suits your lifestyle and why? The RS 3 Sportback is my ideal car. The combination of performance and luxury in a relatively compact package is hard to beat.

When and why did you join Audi?

What are your interests outside of work?

I joined in October 1997, back when Robinsons Audi first opened on Hall Road, Norwich. I was always a lover of Volkswagen and Audi and had worked for several years in a Volkswagen Audi Group (VAG) Specialist Supplier before joining.

Cycling and running - often competitively having completed several half marathons and two full marathons last year. I received fantastic news late last year that after 12 years of trying, I will finally be running the London Marathon 2018 for St. John Ambulance. Lots of training will be taking up my spare time now.

What did you want to be when you grew up? I just wanted to do anything where I could work with cars! It was a passion from a young age.

What’s your work highlight from your time at Audi?

In your opinion, what’s the most exciting thing about the brand?

I went to Germany for the Audi Factory Tour, and have been able to drive the Audi R8 around a track.

The brand itself - with its rapid change of technology.

Entrepreneur Alan Brazewell

A Day in the Life of... Owner of Norwich’s coolest driving school with over 100 years’ worth of experience between his instructors and taking zero’s to heroes in well under the national average time, Alan Brazewell shares the driving force behind five years of growth at Chilled...

Firstly, tell us a bit about your history of driving tuition? I qualified as an instructor - passing my tests first time - back in 2009 with another driving school. Struggling with the company I was with, it was my wife who first supported me in setting up the business with the belief I could do better than the one I was with. Next, my neighbour, a graphic designer, worked with me to bring the brand of Chilled Tuition to life.

What did the beginning of Chilled Tuition look like? Building the brand as a premium driving school, we needed a premium car to launch. Our first stop was Audi. At the time it was the launch of the brand-new A1 and with no other instructor offering one in the area, choosing this model meant we would be the first. Norwich Audi, Local Business Development Manager, Andrew Sturman, was a Sales Executive at the time and has looked after us from day one. With help from Andrew, the delivery date of our A1 meant we could finally launch the school in December 2011.

Wrapped in Chilled Tuition graphics, the A1 has been busy ever since. Not surprisingly, many of our past pupils have gone on to purchase an Audi A1 as they enjoyed the vehicle so much whilst learning.

What was the key to growing your business? The plan was never to franchise the business, I only wanted it as an earner for my family. I could never have dreamed of the success we have had since then. I believe the driver for growth was our reputation for exceptional service and listening to the needs of the business. We took on new team members, including a newly qualified instructor in 2014 - my wife - who had been a Director of the company since launch. We now have six divisions and 31 active instructors covering Norfolk. We offer weekly manual & automatic lessons, intensive course, Driving Instructor Training Academy, towing training and ‘Chilled Young Drivers’, which is an off-road driving course for 14-16 year olds. We are currently the number one reviewed driving school in the UK and have won a few awards in the past year to commend the tremendous work the team are doing.

Why choose Audi for your fleet? At Chilled, we pride ourselves on delivering top-quality lessons in premium cars, which is one it’s one of the business’ Unique Selling Points. We have 26 Audi models, mostly A1 and A3 in both manual and automatic and opt most frequently for petrol. Most of them feature the active cylinder technology which improves economy and emissions but also allows us to train our pupils to drive petrol cars, as they are not as easy to handle as a diesel.

What’s your role in the business today? Today I still teach students as well as upcoming Driving Instructors and juggle that with the running of the school and developing growth and training plans for years ahead. I am always looking for new ways to expand the business, together with ways of maintaining the excellent name and reputation that Chilled has earned in the past six years.

How do you chill out?

scenery and beautiful villages. Saying that, the route can be challenging with the numerous speed changes and road types so it’s a very good route for training pupils.

Are there any new Audi models you’re looking forward to? I keep up to date, always test driving potential vehicles for the school. The new Audi A1 in 2018 and the new A3 in 2019 are particularly important for me in the coming years. I also like the more extreme models yet to be released, I will be signing up to test out the launch models to assess their viability for driving school vehicles.

What car are you currently driving? I currently have on the fleet, which both my wife and I can drive; a Black Edition A1 S-tronic and S1, two S3 Sportback in both manual and automatic, and an SQ7. We use the SUV for Automatic towing training offered at Chilled.

Massive film buff so whenever possible watching movies at home or at the cinema is a great escape for me. Further Information
