Welcome... Welcome to the 13th edition of the Robinsons Mercedes-Benz magazine. Having welcomed both the Saloon and Estate variants in our previous edition we now offer a warm reception to both the E-Class CoupÊ and the imminently arriving Cabriolet. These two models, have never looked so good, each has a distinctive design setting it aside from its stablemates but provides the reassuring quality and signature opulence that only an E-Class affords. Our popular compact SUV the GLA, which launched in 2013 now introduces a facelift incorporating all-new radiator grille, adding a more muscular, compelling look to a car that is now bristling with technology of convenience as standard including KEYLESS-GO and 180° reversing camera as standard among the highlights. Mercedes-Benz is synonymous with technological advances and this is illustrated no more perfectly than the new S-Class model featuring an all new wellbeing function setting helping the updated S-Class set the standard through calibrating an array of comfort systems found inside the vehicle to create an improved sense of wellness. With technological breakthroughs as described the S-Class looks set to continue being the number one selling luxury saloon through 2017 and beyond. With a calendar that remains full no matter what season, this issue reviews some of our latest events and activities from fashion shows to golf. Now with a busy end of year in front of us, I would like to say thank you for your continued support of Robinsons Mercedes-Benz and hope you enjoy our latest issue.

A-Class apart. We caught up with Amanda May-Khalil who featured in the eighth edition of the Robinsons Mercedes-Benz magazine in the ‘A Day In The Life’ profile, when Amanda had just received her new A-Class. Now we discuss Amanda’s experiences of owning one of Mercedes-Benz most popular models. 4

What has been your experience of Robinsons Mercedes-Benz? How would you describe your last 3 years with your A-Class? When I first purchased my A-Class 3 years ago I was so proud and excited to have purchased my first Mercedes-Benz, I felt like I’d made it. 3 years on, I am still as proud as the first day to get in and drive my car around town. I have had nothing but amazing service from Robinsons from the moment I initially enquired and wouldn’t contemplate using another dealer to purchase a car.

What have the benefits been to you of your A-Class? The A Class is such a sexy looking car which looks sporty but is also extremely practical. My daughter was only 1 when I purchased the car and could easily fit the buggy and shopping in when a lot of cars couldn’t. I can honestly say that I have never wanted to change a single feature of my A-Class.

What aspect of your A-Class do you enjoy most? Firstly, how beautifully it drives; covering a large area for work I am often driving between counties and using the DYNAMIC SELECT function to switch between driving modes, helping me get the most efficient fuel economy and the most practical drive. Secondly, I love how amazing it looks and makes me feel, it was really love at first sight.

First class!! When I purchased my car, I received a service package and once a year have been provided with amazing service. I had a query with my radio and my car was booked in straight away with the Aftersales team and dealt with efficiently, keeping me informed along the way.

What’s the main difference in owning your A-Class compared to your previous car? How the car makes you feel has been the main difference. Driving a Mercedes-Benz, gives me a feeling that I have never had in any other car I have driven. I just love driving it!

Can you sum up your ownership of the A-Class in one word? There’s too much to say! I have enjoyed every minute of owning my A-Class. I have only ever had positive experience or comments which makes me feel like I made the right choice. I feel proud to be a Mercedes-Benz driver.

What next, another A-Class or something else? My partner and I are now expecting another baby so we are very excited and are looking at the C-Class Estate as our next car. We love Mercedes-Benz now and will not be going anywhere else. 5

E still stands for excellence: Introducing the E-Class CoupĂŠ and the E-Class Cabriolet. Completing the E-Class portfolio in stylish and elegant fashion, the arrival of the all-new E-CoupĂŠ and all-new E-Cabriolet does not disappoint. 6

Featuring an array of technological masterpieces as standard and seen on the Saloon and Estate, these include Active Brake Assist and AGILITY CONTROL sports suspension as well as the immersive COMAND infotainment option. When the soft top is up, the E-Class Cabriolet has a silhouette similar to that of the pillarless E-Class CoupĂŠ. The close ties between the two models are apparent in their shared design, with the emphasis on surfaces with clean lines that ensconces each of the four high-quality seats that all feel like individual seats in their own right - the driver and all passengers will be able to enjoy blissful comfort on short and long journeys alike. Both models demonstrate their sporty characteristics with the standard 19-inch alloys that come into their own when Sport mode is enabled through the

DYNAMIC SELECT system, where the driver controls the characteristics of the vehicle, other modes include, Comfort, ECO, Sport+ and Individual that is bespoke to the driver. Both CoupĂŠ and Cabriolet in the E 400 4MATIC guise is where the muscular 6-cylinder V-configuration engine housed beneath the two prominent power domes pushes the driving pleasure to its ultimate, accelerating from 0 - 62 mph in just 5.3 seconds with an output of 333 hp. Derived from that of the S-Class Cabriolet, the soft top meets high quality standards in terms of durability and operation. It can be fully opened and closed in 20 seconds when travelling at a speed of up to 31 mph. The fabric soft top is available in a multitude of colours and is of multi-layered composition to reduce wind and driving noise, which makes it easy for the occupants 7

The E-Class Coupe. Exhilaration awaits.

Opting for a Cabriolet, you desire to drive with the top down as often as possible. Maximum openair comfort is possible in the E-Class Cabriolet thanks to the optional AIRCAP automatic draught-stop system and the AIRSCARF necklevel heating, which make the fresh air much more enjoyable even at low outside temperatures. The entry-level models combine two round dials and a 7-inch colour display cluster with a central display featuring an 8.4-inch screen, however, it is the two optionally available high-resolution 12.3-inch screens which merge beneath a shared glass cover to create a widescreen that appears to be floating. The driver has multiple options for engaging with the infotainment system: touch controls in the steering wheel for finger-swipe control, a touchpad that recognises handwriting, the controller in the centre console, LINGUATRONIC voice control and direct-access buttons for controlling the air conditioning and for convenient activation and deactivation of certain driver assistance systems.

The GLA: A fresh new look for 2017. The new Mercedes-Benz GLA, is an update of Mercedes-Benz first mini-SUV, which launched back in 2013. The new model has undergone a range of tweaks and refinements to improve the A-Class’ more rugged cousin and put it further ahead of previously close rivals. At first glance you may not notice the enhancements but once behind the wheel and using the car on a daily basis that’s when the 2017 GLA will come into its own. An all-new radiator grille featuring twin perforated louvres adds a more muscular, forceful look and is one of the exterior highlights on the updated model alongside the revised front bumper that curves around the competitively sized 481-litre boot. The interior is sharp as ever from the new-look instrument cluster to the tactile silver chrome switches on the centre console, every element of the GLA’s spacious cabin has been designed to maximise your driving enjoyment and this is no more evident than when your left hand falls naturally on to the intuitive and excellent central control system. A range of high quality materials have been used throughout, including ARTICO leather* upholstery as standard. On-board technology includes the increasingly ‘can’t do without’ reversing camera, giving you a 180° view of the area behind the car to make backing up safer and 11

Open air adventure: The C-Class Cabriolet. Earlier this summer Tim and Sarah Page set off on a European road trip, this was no ordinary summer holiday but a celebration of 25 years of marriage, that combined two of their passions, travelling Europe and enjoying Moto GP. Covering 2,500 miles in the exceptional C 220 d AMG Line Cabriolet with optional Premium Plus pack. Tim and Sarah both love travelling Europe, enjoying the different cultures and experiences on offer. They felt that they didn’t want to fly as knew the places they’d like to visit but wanted to connect the dots

between the different waypoints mapped out along their journey. For such a long trip and the fact it was their Silver Wedding anniversary they knew it had to be luxury, hence opting for Mercedes-Benz and heading to warmer shores they wanted a Cabriolet for both style and looks, who wouldn’t! The C-Cabriolet offered all the functionality that would be required for such a trip with a main feature being the proprietary COMAND infotainment system, giving the driver accurate and clear information when surroundings are unfamiliar. 19

Highlights of the trip included 3 nights in Montreux where the Swiss Alps provided a thoroughly engaging driving experience where while passing by Lake Geneva the C 250 d was the perfect drop top cruiser following the shoreline. Heading into Italy to visit Turin and Florence is where the Cabriolet came into its own, utilising the DYNAMIC SELECT function, shifting into Sport mode from Eco when needed gave power and responsiveness, turning the cruiser into a nimble racer with enhanced performance qualities to pass slower moving traffic. With a suspension 15 mm lower than the Saloon this only further enhances the Cabriolet’s sporting credentials. With such a large distance to cover it could be thought that fuel would be a huge expense over the distance travelled, however the C-Cabriolet was filled only five times and regularly achieved 56-57mpg, even with the soft top down for the majority of the trip. The visibly sporty expression and youthfully fresh appeal of the car was something which both Tim and Sarah enjoyed, particularly noting when they arrived to the Mugallo Moto GP circuit, in the sleek vibrant blue Convertible, they turned many heads and immediately felt at home in their Platinum Balcony seats on the Start/Finish straight. Upon snaking through the roads of Italy and Switzerland in cooler mornings the early sun can still be enjoyed thanks to AIRCAP draught stop system and the AIRSCARF neck-level heating system that is housed in the sports seats derived from the Coupé. With so many miles to cover the standard fit memory seats really came into their own allowing the driver’s seat, steering wheel and wing mirror position to be saved for up to 3 drivers offering smooth transitions of drivers between coffee breaks. Combined Fuel consumption: 61.4 mpg Power: 170 hp 0 - 62 mph: 8.2 seconds Top Speed: 144 mph

After a trip of a life-time with the C-Class Cabriolet both Tim and Sarah pinpointed the luxurious cream interior, the exceptional luggage capacity of 360 litres (285 litres with the roof open) and the high grade details that are generously applied throughout the car as the initial reasons for choosing the C-Class cabriolet variant. However, after experiencing the power and refinement offered by the 4-cyclinder engine outputting 170 hp/ 125Kw, combined with the smoothness of the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission this 14 day love affair could continue on, and on. 21

The S-Class: Continually setting the standard. Premiering at Auto Shanghai in early 2017 the new S-Class range was presented with all the ceremony you’d expect from the Stuttgart manufacturer’s flagship passenger vehicle. Modern luxury in the new S-Class manifests in maximum quality of materials and workmanship. Status and technological competence are now even more tangible. The S-Class now features six engine options: S 350 d, S 500, S 560 e plug-in hybrid, S 63, S 65 and the S 650 available for the Mercedes-Maybach. The S 350 d features the most powerful 6-cylinder diesel engine in the history of Mercedes-Benz. The engine makes use of Formula 1 research and development on the road through use of NANOSLIDE technology which produces extremely smooth cylinder surfaces for crankcases in combustion engines in order to improve engine efficiency, which all contributes to an output of 286 hp.

22

The word ‘standard’ doesn’t do the included features on the S-Class justice, with so many now included. Comfort and convenience are at the forefront with the Memory Package and KEYLESS GO comfort package also included as well as the useful wireless charging for mobile devices. Ambient lighting within the cockpit can be controlled with 64 vibrant or subtle shades to choose from depending on your mood. Many of the technologies are

being implemented in automotive uses for the first time on the new S 350 d. Wellbeing settings such as ENERGISING comfort links together a number of the creature comforts found inside the S-Class from massaging seats to climate control and ambient lighting to create a specific sort of ambience that enhances the sense of wellness of all occupants by the time your destination has been reached. There are six programs available, each

with their own on-screen graphics and audio accompaniment. The new S-Class takes another major step towards autonomous driving, elevating Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive to the next level. As part of the optional Driving Assistance Package, DISTRONIC Active Distance Assist and Active Steering Assist now provide even more comfortable support for the driver to keep a safe distance and steer. The speed is now adjusted automatically ahead of curves or junctions.

This is complemented by a considerably improved Active Lane Keeping Assist and additional functions of the Active Emergency Stop Assist. Thanks to enhanced standard camera and radar systems, the new S-Class has an even better view of the surrounding traffic to inform Active Blind Spot Assist. In addition, for the first time it makes use of map and navigation data to calculate driving behaviour. A technological statement of superiority was made by the S-Class in 2013 with ROAD SURFACE SCAN. The system detects bumps ahead of the vehicle and adjusts the ACTIVE BODY CONTROL suspension accordingly. In the new S-Class this suspension control is further improved: The stereo camera of the system now scans the road even more thoroughly, even in dusk. Another comfort enhancement is the CURVE curve-

tilting function, available in the S-Class Saloon for the first time on the S 65 model. The body tilts to the inside of the turn by up to 2.65 degrees and thereby reduces the driving forces perceived by any passengers. In 2016 this icon of Mercedes-Benz was the best-selling luxury saloon in the world with the update on the way the wave of dominance looks set to continue.

smart electric drive range On-the-road price from: £20,920

Another smart move: Electric drive across the entire smart range. Developing on the continued love affair that the public has had with smart since its UK launch, the new electric drive answers the questions of the urban mobility, versatility and styling but now with zero emissions driving.

Innovative ideas, sensors and digital components which are familiar from higher vehicle classes make the new electric drive generation more than just cars with electric drives: they are mobility solutions for the city offering more fun and enjoyment than ever before. To offer the electric drive across the entire smart range alongside traditional combustion engines is an achievement not to be understated as smart are the first manufacturer to do this. The first electric smart fortwo was introduced in 2007 but with the release of the fourth-generation of smart’s electric powertrain is available across the range: the two-seater fortwo, its open-top sibling the fortwo cabriolet and the four-seater forfour. The cabriolet also has the distinction of being

the only all-electric convertible available on the market today. Peak power is up 5kW to 60kW and that means 81bhp with an instant 118lb ft of torque. The top speed is limited to 80mph but it has plenty of get up and go where you really need it, scampering away from the lights and up to 60km/h (37mph) in a sprightly 4.9 seconds. And because it’s all-electric, there are no gear changes to get in the way of your progression. Range has been improved – it’s up to 100 miles per charge – and the cars charge quicker than the previous generation, too. The cars’ 7.2kW charging system

Happy Birthday: Robinsons Motor Group turns 90.

Celebrating 90 years since first opening under founder Richard Robinson in 1927.

1927 Company founded at Riverside Road by Richard Robinson, as a coachbuilder, paint and repair business. After making aeroplanes in the war, he came to Norwich in 1919 managing the production of Wolseley bodies for Bolton & Paul and coachbuilding for Howes & Sons.

34

1927 The private hire service, Drivurself name was registered – a very forward thinking interpretation on a name that would fit into today’s modern world.

1950 Riverside Road - First Base. The business became a limited company in 1956 and the following year diversified its activities. Present staff numbers at this time were approximately 55.

1974 The Mercedes-Benz franchise was added in 1964 and by 1970 the business outgrew the Riverside Road premises. Redevelopment moved to Heigham Causeway in 1974.

The family owned business has grown from strength to strength spreading from its first registered address in Norwich, Norfolk across East Anglia to Bury St Edmunds, Cambridge, Kings Lynn, Peterborough, Ipswich and Lowestoft. Now occupying 28 dealerships as the UK’s 41st largest dealer group, Robinsons Motor Group remains committed to offering the very best customer service as the business continues to look forward to new opportunities. A brief look through the Robinsons archives illustrates how far the business has developed and supports that Robinsons Motor Group will continue to thrive in the next 90 years and beyond.

1984 A decade after the move to Heigham Causeway, Mercedes-Benz was further expanded. As a sign of confidence Mercedes-Benz built a new, one acre site with ample parking. Heigham Street has now become the popular and convenient “motor precinct” adjacent to the city - and Robinsons are to be congratulated for their very considerable enhancement to the appearance of the area.

2011 Nearly 1,000 customers and guests enjoyed an evening with racing legend Sir Stirling Moss to mark the official opening of Mercedes-Benz of Norwich new showroom. The purpose-built premises doubled in size from their former Heigham Street showroom.

2015 Robinsons now established throughout East Anglia. Branching from as high as Stamford down to Ipswich in Suffolk. Many more brands under our belt and our own used car dealerships called Auto Devotion.

Now Robinsons turns 90 years old with the brand firmly established an exciting era awaits.

35

Mercedes-Benz stars. As Robinsons Motor Group turns 90, we reflect on a select group of our Robinsons Mercedes-Benz employees who have been aiding you on your journey for quite some time. We have chosen to highlight the longest-serving team members at each one of our five retailers who between the five of them have been with Robinsons Mercedes-Benz for an astonishing 117 years combined‌now that is a lot of experience.

Name: Stuart Thurlbourn Department: Technician Dealership: Mercedes-Benz of Cambridge Length of Service: 22 years

What is your fondest memory since you started working with Robinsons? Attending the Mercedes-AMG training at the Algarve International Circuit in Portugal.

Which part of your role do you enjoy the most? I really enjoy the opportunity to be face to face with customers. For example, when customers find it difficult to understand any technical issues, I will help fully explain the procedure carried out and why. I find this reassures the customer, showing that we are taking the best care possible of their vehicle.

36

Name: Joyce Smith Department: Parts Dealership: Mercedes-Benz of Peterborough Length of Service: 32 years

How does your role aid the team around you? My role is to supply key parts for the vehicles on time, this ensures that the car in question can get back to its owner in a prompt manner.

What has made your time with Mercedes-Benz of Peterborough memorable? That would be working with another long servant of the dealership, John Steels. He has worked alongside me for just as long and my 32 years would not have been the same without him.

What does your role consist of? Working in Sales Administration we assist the sales team with all the vehicle documentation and sales processes. This goes from the initial ordering of the new vehicle, pushing workshop lines, requesting PDIs (Pre-Delivery Inspections) to final taxation ensuring the customer has a smooth and enjoyable handover. Name: Michelle Taylor Department: Administration Dealership: Mercedes-Benz of Norwich Length of Service: 33 years

What made you want to work for Robinsons? A group of six girls were chosen from our Office Practice Group in the 6th form at the Hewett School, by our Careers Officer and sent for an interview at Robinsons for the new Mercedes-Benz showroom opening, my initial interview was with Phil Wallace, who was the Company Secretary at the time and was asked to return in the afternoon to see Mr G A Robinson and by the end of the day I was the new Office Junior/Receptionist. I believe I still have my initial contract dating back to then!

Name: Norma Lambert Department: Accounts Dealership: Mercedes-Benz of Bury St Edmunds Length of Service: 15 years

How did you come to join Mercedes-Benz of Bury St Edmunds? I moved to Suffolk from Buckinghamshire. Having worked with Mercedes-Benz nearly all my working life, I knew of the reputation Robinsons had. Upon learning, there was a vacancy for a receptionist, I applied and got the job. I have since moved into an accounts role and have enjoyed the opportunity to join a growing dealership.

What part of your job do you find most interesting? I really enjoy my accounts role but am also responsible for Health & Safety admin. This aspect of my role allows me to keep in contact with all members of the team ensuring we’re compliant. I’m sure there’s lots of eye rolling as I walk round the building with my clipboard as I conduct monthly checks but it’s the most satisfying knowing that I’m keeping everyone safe.

Name: Ann Dryden-Stone Department: Service Dealership: Mercedes-Benz of Kings Lynn Length of Service: 15 years

What part of your role do you find most rewarding? I have many fond memories but working with a great team over the years is the most enjoyable part, and making life-long friends along the way. We have all grown together, we really are a work family.

How does your role aid the customer? To make a customer’s experience with us the best it can be from dropping their car off to collecting it. Managing my fantastic team enables me to carry this out efficiently and more often than not exceed customer expectations. 37

The show must go on. The Royal Norfolk Show is historically a glorious and sun filled affair, with ladies donning their biggest hats, gents cutting a fine figure in sharp tailored suits amongst the many beasts of burden and agricultural workers that make up the UK’s largest County Show. Now in its 155th year, the 2017 edition would be more suitable for wellies and umbrellas with frequent downpours over the two days meaning cups of hot coffee were the order of the day as opposed to the more traditional Pimms. Over the years the show has diversified, playing host to a wide range of retail and commercial businesses as well as those from the motor trade. Robinsons Mercedes-Benz very own Local Business Development Manager, Simon Meredith attended two days at the show visiting clients. Simon commented on being at the show “it’s great to be able to come and visit the Show and see so many familiar faces away from the formal business world”. Over the two-days, Simon dodged and weaved between the inclement showers to catch up with a wide variety of businesses including Bussey Vehicle Leasing, Alan Boswell Insurance Group, Brown & Co. and Anglian Farmers. Rounding off Simon’s day on both the Wednesday and Thursday was the chance to attend Archant Publishing’s Afternoon Tea which was the perfect opportunity to network with many professionals and offer advice on their companies or personal vehicle solutions. Despite the weather the Show was a tremendous success, with around 80,000 people expected to have attended across both days. Zoey Williamson, Fleet Corporate Supervisor says “having an informal presence at these types of events is vital to maintaining existing relationships. It provides our Local Business Development Managers the chance to catch up with key clients away from the fast-based environment we all operate in nowadays”.

Meet the team. Introducing the Robinsons Mercedes-Benz E-Commerce Team.

Helen Cousins

Group E-commerce Manager

What made you want to work for Mercedes-Benz? I left school and went to work in the motor industry, I had always wanted to be the best I could be and I knew working for Mercedes-Benz meant that I could learn and improve from the best. For me I never applied for any other brand other than Mercedes-Benz. I had seen relatives with Mercedes-Benz growing up and always saw this as a goal to aspire towards.

How has the E-commerce Department developed alongside more traditional areas of Robinsons Mercedes-Benz? The E-Commerce department was set up in 2013 to primarily deal with all incoming internet enquiries for Robinsons Mercedes-Benz. Since 2013 the team has grown from just myself to currently five as the demand for Mercedes-Benz vehicles has increased along with our product range, which means more options for the customer to choose from. The internet has opened up the way we conduct business and the response times expected with an internet enquiry are far quicker as the consumer has more choice. It is imperative that as soon as we receive an enquiry we acknowledge the customer with a timely response and organise all information quickly and efficiently, thus providing the customer reassurance that their enquiry is being processed.

What is your favourite Mercedes-Benz model and why? My favourite Mercedes-Benz model would have to be the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet. During a VIP Event we held at Mercedes-Benz of Peterborough last summer a Mercedes-Benz S 500 Cabriolet was on display in the showroom sporting a Canvansite blue colour scheme with dark blue soft top and porcelain leather interior. The car is both elegant and sophisticated, with my favourite feature being the optional LED Intelligent Light System that features 47 Swarovski crystals per headlight‌ anything that sparkles!

What part of your job do you find most interesting? The part of my job I find most interesting is the forever growing portfolio of models. Every time you feel you have all the knowledge regarding the current range, an update or new model is launched which is always exciting for both us and our customers. Mercedes-Benz are continuously developing and improving, releasing innovative products and technology which allows the manufacturer to be a market leader. 45

Jonny Human

E-commerce Executive

How does Mercedes-Benz set itself apart? Mercedes-Benz to me has always meant class leading in every aspect. In my thirteen years with Robinsons I’ve seen a lot of new technology introduced into the market, I would say the vast majority of these updates are first seen on a Mercedes-Benz, whether it be a new design or advancements in safety features, an example of this would be the multiple award winning PRE-SAFE.

How does your role in E-Commerce aid the customer? E-Commerce is the first point of contact for all incoming online enquiries. We aid the customer by ensuring they are have fast and friendly first point of contact, providing information regarding their enquiry, arrange bookings and also take details to provide quotations. We also look after existing customers and guide them through their finance agreements from early settlement requests to assisting with the best point to change their vehicle and supplying all the information to make an informed decision regarding their maturing finance agreement.

What has been the most enjoyable model you’ve experienced? Without doubt, it’s the ‘G Wagon’. I was lucky enough to visit the factory in Austria where we were able to put the G 63 through its paces by off-roading up a mountain side, which it achieved with ease! I also had a tour of the factory and I was amazed that with all the high-tech machinery used in modern automotive manufacturing these vehicles are still pretty much hand built with each mechanic playing a part in each vehicle that is produced.

Can you describe the Mercedes-Benz brand in one word? Elegance. 47

Diesel vs. petrol: What does this mean for you? Diesel engines have had a tough time recently with a lot of speculation and debate about petrol vs. diesel-engine cars in the media, social situations, and in the showroom. The bad press of recent months is thanks to the VW emissions scandal, where real-world testing revealed that some cars’ emissions were far higher than they were when tested in lab conditions. It’s to be highlighted that the problems outlined in this scandal affect older diesel models, with modern diesels featuring exhaust after treatment such as AdBlue and diesel particulate filters meaning they’re fully compliant with the latest Euro 6 emissions standards. As a result of the scandal, a new test dubbed the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure will come into effect in September 2017. This will allow for more accurate readings for both diesel and petrol-powered cars in real-world environments along with removing the possibility that test results can be falsified. Many car buyers in the early 2000s chose diesel vehicles because they offered better fuel economy and produced less CO2 emissions than their petrol 48

equivalents – road tax at the time was based solely on CO2 emissions so diesel cars tended to cost less. Diesel models produce more nitrogen dioxide and particulates than petrol ones, potentially leading to acid rain, smog and respiratory problems in people. The recent changes in car tax and the current uncertainty over diesel models reflects an increased awareness of this environmental damage. Modern diesel cars feature lots of technologies to minimise their environmental effects. These include diesel particulate filters that reduce the number of particles emitted from the exhaust. Some new vehicles use AdBlue – a urea-derived additive sprayed into the exhaust to break down some of the nitrogen dioxides. All current Mercedes-Benz cars meet Euro 6 emissions standards. Meaning the current generation is 10 times cleaner than those of the Euro 3 era between 200 and 2004. Any potential talk of scrappage schemes introduced in 2017 would not affect any modern dieselengine Mercedes-Benz.

If you have any questions about your vehicle’s emissions please contact your nearest Robinsons retailer who will be happy to advise you on your situation. Diesel vs. petrol

In the premium car market, diesel definitely has a future and we have taken the following steps: • Mercedes-Benz has invested some €3 billion in the development and production of a completely new diesel engine family. • Technology such as AdBlue helps reduce harmful exhaust

emissions and meet Euro 6 standards and is fitted to a large number of models with the existing range.

September 2017 onwards. Existing EU6 cars will still be legal and comply - it is the current “NEDC fuel cycle test” that is changing.

• Last year, Mercedes-Benz was the first manufacturer to launch diesel vehicles on the market which already meet the stricter RDE (Real Driving Emissions) limits planned for the EU from

• Highly-efficient diesel and petrol engines play an important part in the achievement of the CO2 values of 95 g for 2020/2021, as prescribed by EU legislation.

Norwich Fashion Week

Robinsons: A dedicated follower of fashion. 2017 saw Robinsons continue the Mercedes-Benz trend partnering with high profile fashion events. Mercedes-Benz of Norwich were first to step into the spotlight by being the headline sponsor of Norwich Fashion Week. The seventh annual event, celebrated the city’s vibrant fashion scene. Launched in style, five Mercedes-Benz vehicles flanked Open, the ‘home’ of Norwich Fashion Week, as some 24 models took to the runway showcasing more than 16 of the city’s most popular fashion outlets. Celebrating the best of both, high street and independent retailers, the show featured clothing from established names including Jarrolds, House of Fraser, Gallyons, Sahara, East and John Lewis. During the hour long event, the catwalk was awash with patriotic colours, with red, white and navy blue clearly being the

50

must have shades for this season. Emma Harrowing, one of Fashion Week’s Directors, said: “Norwich Fashion Week 2017 got off to a great start with the Mercedes-Benz Retailers Show. The support given by the dealership and staff over the past three years has been invaluable. Building on the high profile collaboration between London Fashion Week and Mercedes-Benz, Robinsons are able to provide an added touch of luxury and glamour to our showpiece event”. Next to take to the catwalk in aid of St Nicholas Hospice was Mercedes-Benz of Bury St Edmunds, headline sponsors of Fashion Fusion held at The Apex. Around 400 people enjoyed the fashion show featuring ten Bury St Edmunds town

centre businesses, who paraded the best of their spring/summer collections in aid of the charity to the beats of The Apex’s in-house DJ at the turntable; the event also featured creative and innovative garments made by fashion students at West Suffolk College. The night raised a record-breaking sum of £10,211. The evening was hosted by Fashion Candy Style founder and former model, Pam Davis. It also featured an array of scarves made by some of those receiving care and support from the hospice itself.

Abby Mayes, corporate fund-raiser for St Nicholas Hospice Care: “We are so grateful to Mercedes-Benz of Bury St Edmunds for coming on board this year and offering unwavering support”. Fashion Fusion has now raised more than £30,000 for St Nicholas Hospice Care since it began in 2011. During the hour long event, noticeable womenswear trends included tailored jackets, floaty shirts, nautical stripes and statement necklaces with tassels. For men it was all about the tropical print t-shirts (House of

Fraser and John Lewis both debuted the same highly sought after Ted Baker parrot printed top) and neutral toned jackets. Loud pop music, sleek hair and bright eye makeup were also key components of the show, adding a little extra wow-factor to the fittingly glamorous evening. With further fashion events, still to come you may see a Robinsons retailer on a catwalk near you soon.

Mercedes-Benz of Norwich shooting to the top. On the last day of June Mercedes-Benz of Norwich was proud to sponsor Break Charity’s annual Clay Pigeon Shoot - Breaking Clays.

56

The region’s most celebrated charity clay pigeon shoot is now in its 4th year and was bigger than ever, taking place at the stunningly beautiful Bayfield Hall, just outside of Holt. Break’s vision is to ensure children, young people and families reach their full potential and shape their own futures in a safe and creative environment. As joint headline sponsor alongside Adrian Flux Insurance, Mercedes-Benz of Norwich is spear heading raising vital funds for one of the region’s most heralded charities which is supported by TV personality and Norwich born Jake Humphrey, who is the charities patron. Over 160 shooters took part in a team flush competition, with all teams keen to be ‘Top Gun’. Mercedes-Benz of Norwich entered two teams of experienced shooters to represent the dealership and hopefully bring the trophy home. Marketing Executive, Damien Sohal hosted customers for the day offering unequivocal support to his teams, in between the many questions asked about the 3 Mercedes-Benz models that stood

proudly on display as the shooters arrived. The most popular was the all-new E-Coupé in selenite grey. The day started with a safety briefing over coffee and bacon rolls, which was certainly a very popular choice. It was then a shooting start to ensure shooters could get around all twelve traps. With the sun beating down throughout the day refreshment provided by volunteers from Norwich School was most welcome by all teams. A top prize of Deakin & Francis cufflinks for each shooter was offered by Winsor Bishop jewellers for the Team Challenge Flush. After a great day’s shoot the important business of raising money was about to begin with a charity auction preceding a two-course lunch. After a day of fierce, yet friendly competition the real winner’s were Break Charity

End of season event

who raised an astonishing £27,000. Mercedes-Benz of Norwich along with Break and all the other sponsors are so thankful to the army of volunteers who gave up their day to come and work at the shoot, including a group of students from Norwich School who helped with food preparation and serving the 206 guests. Mercedes-Benz of Norwich General Manager, Mark Allman said “it’s fantastic to be able to support Break through the wonderful Breaking Clays. It’s our first year of sponsorship and hosting clients and for everyone to have had such an enjoyable day is a fantastic but I am personally very pleased to have helped raise that amount we have and hope this money can make real changes to many young lives”.

A day in the life of...

Lee Mowle Age: 51 Lee races in the British GT Championship for amdtuning.com with Cobra Exhausts. Robinsons Retailer: Mercedes-Benz of Norwich

Q&A

Lee tells all...

What attracted you to Mercedes-Benz as a brand?

What are the key attributes you look for when purchasing your car?

Up until 2017 I had raced a BMW Z4 GT3, a great car that had been very successful over the years but like everything was starting to show its age when up against the new generation of GT3 race cars that arrived on the scene in 2016. I have always tried to avoid the teething problems that being ‘new’ generally brings and so used 2016 as a year to watch and evaluate the options from the likes of Ferrari, BMW, Porsche and of course Mercedes-AMG with their new AMG GT3. The Mercedes-Benz brand has been at the pinnacle of the motorsport for as long as I can remember they have a heritage and passion for the sport that few can rival and with a car that looks like the AMG GT3 who wouldn’t be attracted to the brand.

The average GT3 car costs over £300,000 and with yearly running costs well in to six figures you need to do your homework before putting pen to paper, it’s a huge investment. For me there are three key elements to consider, firstly which goes without saying the car needs to be competitive on track and the Mercedes-AMG is ideally for the circuits we race on in the UK and European. Secondly for long term success you have to have the right Team around you and the manufacturer and the level of support, commitment and expertise they bring to the game both on and off the track are a huge part of that team and lastly the cost, financially the numbers have to work, racing is at the end of the day a business. 63

What model do you currently drive? I have recently taken delivery of the new Mercedes-AMG GTR from Sales Executive, James Cooling. My wife currently drives an A 250 AMG.

What helped you decide on your current car? I am fortunate in that I know a number of people in the motor industry a couple of whom had the opportunity to put the AMG GT R through its paces, their feedback on the twin-turbo V-8 engine which outputs 585 hp made my decision a very simple one.

Can you describe what a typical race weekend is like? The typical race weekend starts on a Friday afternoon sitting down with your team mate and race engineer to go through the run plan for the weekend this normally takes about an hour after which we walk the track before heading to the hotel for a bite to eat and an early night. Saturday mornings start early with driver sign in and the driver’s briefing at around 8am. Track action commences at 9.30am with the first of two one hour free practice sessions, the second usually taking place around mid-day. Between sessions the team will make set up changes to the car to try and find performance improvements, the drivers will sit down with our engineers to review data and video to identify

those areas that we can improve on. At around 3pm we qualify the car, usually a 10-minute session for each driver, the combined times from which determine the starting grid for the race. Post-qualifying a further review of data and discussions with the engineers take place to agree the strategy for the race. Track action on Sunday’s start around 10am with a 10-minute warm up just to make sure the car is still pointing in the right direction should teams have had to make changes following FP2. Around midday the pit lane is opened up to allow spectators to chance to get up close to the teams, drivers and most importantly the cars. The race starts around 1pm and typically last two hours in length with a pit stop for tyres, fuel and a driver change at the one hour mark. Once the chequered flag drops for the top three it’s a triumphant trip to the podium, a trophy and the customary spraying of champagne before the trip home.

What is your dream Mercedes? That would have to be the Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing, just need to find a couple of million!
