time, will be held at the Glen Helen Amphitheater. The graduation is set for Friday, June 7 at 4pm. Over 400 Students are expected to attend

VVC’s 10th Annual Transfer Celebration By: Akane Sanchez Reporter

Victor Valley College (VVC) had its 10th Annual Transfer celebration on May 14. Held for the students who are attending a 4-year university this upcoming fall, it commemorated the students for all their hard work and success.

The event started off with a small speech from Lorena Ochoa, a transfer counselor.

She gave a quick overview of what was to follow; a couple speeches from faculty and students, thanked everyone for coming, and welcomed Superintendent Dr. Daniel Walden to the stage.

Dr. Walden talked about his hopes for the school and what his community college experience was like. He said that he hoped the students at VVC will get the same kind of inspiring and helpful experience. Most importantly, he said that he was proud of the transfer students and all their hard work.

It is a common place for graduations in the high desert.

In past years, graduation attendance was very limited; students were limited to 3 tickets when graduation was held in the school's gymnasium.

Sultana High School, Adelanto Stadium (formerly Maverick Stadium), and Silverado High School are other places where graduation has been held. All locations faced many difficulties when it came to seating, transporting students and guests. Robert Sewell, ASB Advisor at VVC since 1997, was asked why Glen Helen

Engelsen took the stage following Dr. Walden to talk about the struggle of being in a community college. “Your education is yours - you can't forget that it’s yours,” she says. “I want to remind you that you’ve got a resiliency that is incredible. You all have the experience of working hard, getting support, knowing how much you want it to happen, and you do. You accomplish your goals and they haven't always been easy. The most important lesson you have to remember is that you did it.”

The ASB Public Relations Senator, Amber Scott, then took to the podium afterwards.

“As a graduating student myself, I am more than sure that

the journey to here was…. something else,” Scott says, starting her speech off a statement of understanding. Scott asks the transfer students to take a moment and appreciate their support systems, for it is a privilege not all have. “I would like to ask you to recall all of the obstacles and hurdles you have had to overcome to get to this moment. None are too big, or too small. Think about every naysayer, all those who did not understand why you chose to take a path towards higher education. Know this - your persistence has and will continue to guide you towards your higher purpose.”

Stephanie Martinez and Edward Freer went onstage to speak of their own personal

experiences at VVC. Martinez, who is transferring to UNLV with a scholarship, spoke of her struggles with seizures.

Before she was to graduate high school, she learned her life was going to drastically change. No longer could she pursue a career in the military - she couldn't even drive anymore. Martinex went on to say that she started her time at VVC with basic remedial classes; Basic Skills 3, English 6, and Math 42. Now she is on to English 104 and Math 120, and on her way to Las Vegas with a scholarship.

Edward Freer took the stage, talking of his battle with drugs and jail time. He says

Amphitheater was chosen and said, “The main reason is to provide a safe enjoyable environment and to give room and space for their guests, families, and supporters.” Sewell also said that feedback from students this year when picking up tickets is improved as compared to other years. This is due to the improvement in accommodating students families and supporters attending.

Tickets are free and students can have as many as needed, as long it is a reasonable amount. Parking is free and there are accommodations with San Bernardino County Sheriff's to support traffic on and off the 15 freeway. VVC ASB will be accommodating any students, faculty, or staff with bus transportation to the

event.

The increase in space as compared to other locations is the biggest improvement.

There will be no worry about squeezing people in; a few years ago some families were not able to get in because of an unexpected increase of students attending. With potentially 11,000 fixed seats, a capacity of 30,000 on the grass, and 1,000 seats for students, faculty, staff, music performers, and choir it is a vast upgrade. There will be improved assistance with seating, more restrooms, and concession stands providing food and drinks. VVCs orchestra, singers, and choir will be performing and Sewell said it is an “Opportunity for students to show who they are and

showcase talent.” Jay Obernolte of the State Assembly will be a keynote speaker.

The graduation ceremony at the Glen Helen Amphitheater is a huge win for the college. Sewell was asked what is next for VVC graduations and said “I am going to take a strong look at this graduation and see how to enhance our graduation at a larger venue.

Whether that is with speakers, accommodations, time, or date.” Sewell also mentioned he hopes to have the 2021 graduation at VVCs new multi purpose stadium if it is finished by then. With around 1140 degrees eligible to be conferred and roughly 900 candidates for graduation, Sewell is hopeful students take advantage of the opportunity

Fletcher Takes The Prize

The Student Activity Center was the site of the Victor Valley College Annual Speech Contest on April 25. Thirty aspiring contestants submitted applications to the Communication Studies Department for an opportunity to compete.

“This is the third year I'm helping organize this event” said Communication Professor Jennifer Fowlie. Every year the contest has a different topic chosen by the Communication Department staff. This year's topic asked contestants to answer the question, “ What have you learned from your experience at VVC?” Competing students entered an initial complete draft of their speech, beginning the screening process in which the highestscoring participants were qualified to compete. Fifteen speeches were selected for a chance to win cash prizes totaling $500.

“It's fun to see the students grow, bloom and it's amazing to watch people improve, win and later be thankful they did

it!” said Nisha Kamboh. Kamboh has been tutoring and helping students further developing their communication skills on the second floor of building 54, in the Communications Center room 213. “I will forever be grateful for my time here,” said Kamboh.

The contest participants equally had a time of three to five minutes to present their speech and convince the judges that they were skilled and capable of captivating and expressing what they have learned at VVC. The contest was scored by a half dozen distinguished panel of judges, all very pleased to attend and eager to hear the speakers. The judges included Peter Allam, Attorney, VVC Foundation Board Member, and a professor at Emeritus. The contestants all had amazing speeches, moving, eloquent and smart the attending audience caught a glimpse into the world of the different speakers. Each had a distinct personal touch, showcasing the diversity, challenges, accomplishments, and the amazing talent at VVC. From start to finish, the contest was moderated by Nisha Kamboh, the mood was upbeat and fun, which kept the nervous contestants relaxed and focused. One by one the contestants gave their best, “The professors here have become my mentors” said Fernando Barajas in his speech.

Michelle Bello, a returning student and Rambassador said “VVC has instilled in me the sense of community, transgenerational learning has allowed me to blossom as a senior student.” All the speeches were great, the judges had to make tough calls and the final decisions were tallied.

Ashley Fletcher, feeling surprised, ing to return to school should, for he has had nothing but encouragement and help during his time at VVC. After all of the speeches, the coordinators called all the students on stage one by one,

took the first place, winning the top prize of $200, and said, “It is my first time competing, I can't believe I did this! I am calling my mom and telling her that I won!” Stephanie Hanley, a returning student and single mom, took second place and a prize of $150. “I was nervous, now I'm happy, I just want to be a role model for my kids.” Jodie Whitehead, third place, won a prize of $100. Fourth place won by Nicole Edlaver received a cash prize of $50.

Everyone has a chance to enter the contest, the only requirement is to be a VVC student. The help and the opportunity for growth and development is available to all the Communication Department at VVC will be gearing up for the next speech contest, eager to help and hoping to see more of our students up to the challenge of competing at the podium and showing the dynamic and exciting diversity of the VVC student body. presenting them with a certificate and a medal. Each film inspires viewers with its masterful storytelling and animation. Howl’s Moving Castle was the first movie shown this year in April celebrating its 15 anniversary.

Victorville and Apple Valley Cinemark Theaters give audiences a chance to experience these amazing films on the big screen.

In the month of May, Studio Ghibli will show Miyazaki’s Nausicaä of the V alley of the Wind. A breathtaking post-apocalyptic tale of princess Nausicaä’s adventure and a war between struggling people. these will show on May 20 (dubbed) and 22 (subtitled).

Whisper of the Heart directed by Yoshifumi Kondo, will show July 1 and 2. A coming of age story of a young lady after a mysterious meeting with a gentleman cat.

Kiki’s Delivery Service written and directed by Miyazaki, will be celebrating its 30 anniversary. It will have showings July 28, 29, and 31. A

My Neighbor Totoro written and directed by Miyazaki, will be at the theatre August 25, 26, and 28. A loving tale of two sisters who go on an adventure with a lovable spirit to see their sick mother.

The Secret World of Arrietty directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, shows September 29-30. A story adapted from the children’s book The Borrowers about four-inch-tall people who live off borrowed items from a regular family.

Spirited Away, winner of the 2003 Academy Award for best animated film directed by Miyazaki, will show October 27, 28, and 30. A story of a little girl who wanders into the land of spirits and witches.

Princess Mononoke written and directed by Miyazaki, November 17, 18, and 20. A tall of a cursed prince searching for the creation of demons in the forests. The Tale of the Princess Kaguya written and directed by Isao Takahata, , showing December 16 and 18.

A Japanese folklore story of a mysterious young princess that grows from a bamboo shoot.

Supporting special event viewings like Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind will give Cinemark Theaters incentive to continue to bring international movies to the High Desert.

There are currently no plans for Ghibli Fest to return in 2020, but hopefully it will return to inspire future generations of Japanese film fanatics.

Summer is right around the corner, and it is time to shine with a pair of sneakers that will enhance the endless amount of outfits.

The releases this May consist of Travis Scott x Jordan 1, Sacai X Nike LDWaffle, Air Jordan 4 OG Bred, BBC X Adidas Pharrell, Tom Sachs X Nike and many more.

Here is a list of all the sneakers that will be releasing in the month of May, and where to purchase them.

Air Jordan 4 OG Bred 2019. It is the 30th anniversary of the original release of the Jordan 4. Jordan brand celebrated this by releasing one of their highly demanded Jordan 4. The previous release of this sneaker was in 2012 with the Jordan jumpman logo on the heel. This time around, Jordan brand is releasing the sneaker with the Nike Air logo on the

BSU Promotes Unity Ariagna Perez Monreal Reporter

Black Student Union (BSU) is a nation wide club that promotes unity throughout the African American community. Ebonie Durham the club president states “Black Student Union isn’t just a club for African American students, we are built off of inclusivity so that all the students can have a fair chance to learn about our culture.” BSU club members appreciate diversity.

Celeste Simmons, a member of BSU, says, “There are times that we are told our events are not really catering to all people, but we never say they’re not. However, we do want to make sure our events celebrate our race.” Anyone is welcome to become a part of the club, there just has to be the the desire to be a member, and join with an open mind.

Requirements in becoming a member of the club are attending their weekly meetings which are held every Friday at 5:15 p.m. The meetings are held on the second floor of the Student Activity Center (SAC). The club also engages in activities throughout the High Desert. BSU is planning on having a field day/carnival campus wide event open to the High Desert community. The event is planned for June, after the spring semester ends. Additionally, BSU is in the process of adopting Victor Valley High School, and intend on adopting more schools. By adopting schools, students interested get mentored by BSU, and become part of the club. Simmons says “In the essence we want to educate different races in being more inclusive, or having a better understanding of different cultures. Their adolescence are crucial years, because they are molding their belief system.”

The goal is guiding them and helping the transition from high school to college.

BSU’s main goal is to make a more inclusive campus and a better environment overall. Durham, states “I’m trying to make good impact, and creating stability while I’m here, I want them to continue the great things.” VVC’s Black Student Union club has around 25 members, but aspire to be the biggest club on campus.

Opening with empowering rap anthems, the night began with a message to “live in your truth”. This theme ran apparent as each performer following proudly displayed their personal creative efforts, without fear or hesitation. The inclusive, judgement-free environment created a safe space for all to express their art truthfully.

Passionately performed original poems, short stories, songs, guitar stylings, and

even selections from famed authors and poets wowed the crowd - among many other performances.

VVC staff members also took to the mic to show their creative side. English Professor, Tim Adell, shared stylings from his personal journal of original poetry, and Sociology Professor, Susan Christensen , also read aloud pieces she wrote to a captivated audience.

The fourth annual Open Mic Night gave students and staff a welcoming, unified, and affirming place to come together and appreciate shared talents.

The inspiring atmosphere instilled a sense of trust, and of community here on campus.

“There was so much im-

pressive creativity, openness, and vulnerability in the room.

Everyone participated in cultivating positivity and good vibes whether they realized it or not,” Writing Center tutor Ali Brown said. “I believe creativity is important in all aspects of life, but especially in self expression. Open Mic Night was an opportunity for students to be their authentic selves with no judgement. By sharing those intimate parts of ourselves, we allow people in,” she concluded.

The event was overall a success, not only showcasing student talent and artistic expression, but also helping create a more collaborative and accepting campus.

Disneyland Walks for Kids By: Dania Kaoud Reporter Disneyland has been sponsoring a walk for kids every year for the past 29 years.

Every year Disneyland holds a fundraiser for the Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC). It is a 5k walk that throughout Disneyland and California Adventure Parks.

This year the event will take place on Sunday, August 11, 2019. The opening ceremony will start on Main Street U.S.A. The event first started in in 1990. The first CHOC walk stretched over five miles, starting at Main Place Mall in Santa Ana, past the children’s hospital, all throughout neighborhoods until they reached the Disneyland park parking lot. After the first three years of maintaining the event, the event has outgrown its route and moved to South Coast Plaza. Where it remained for the next nine years. The CHOC walk has then been known as the “Happiest Place on Earth” giving it the title of “CHOC walk in the Park”.

The walkers get to enjoy the magic of Disneyland before it opens up to the public. All who participate get to walk throughout Disneyland, Cali-

fornia Adventure, and Downtown Disneyland.

The CHOC walk is the first event of its kind to take place at Disneyland. It is the biggest fundraising milestone up to date, raising over $550,000 for the children’s hospital. CHOC walk in the park has then continued to grow gradually throughout the years. In 2004, the event then became the first ever milliondollar event. Over the 29 years the event was held, it has raised over $35 million for the children’s hospital.

The CHOC walk has early bird registrations of $85. After July 29, 2019, registration will cost $95. After buying a place in the walk everyone must

Once a year Victor Valley College proudly creates an exhibition for the community to join in its adoration for its local student artists. On May 30 the VVC art department will be proudly hosting the VVC Student Art Show, where our local community is welcomed to admire a world

of art created by students.

With the spring semester drawing close to its end, students are ready to place their masterpieces on display for all to see. They have been painstaking working through whatever medium they have deemed. Items that could be expected at the upcoming event will be everything from handmade drawing to meticulously crafted sculptures.

Once everyone has completed the walk, they’re allowed to roam freely throughout the Disneyland park. Every participant gets free parking on the day of the event. The school also offers classes targeted towards some less than traditional art classes like design and animation. Besides these classes providing students prospects for a future in art, it helps them express the skill they are currently equipped with. The school hosts the art show to encourage its students to show off their artistic expressions and to

special hotel rates for the CHOC walk weekend. Every participant of the CHOC walk gets 5 discounted tickets to the Disneyland Park. Their tickets cost $56 each, rather than $149 each. They can purchase the park hopper tickets for $86. These tickets allow people to openly go back and forth between both parks, Disneyland and California Adventure.

Around 14,000 walkers are estimated to participate in the CHOC walk every year. The Children’s Hospital of Orange was named the best children’s hospital by U.S News and World Report in 2017 and 2018. The fundraiser is held for one reason, and that is for the health and well-being of the children in need.

Jacqueline Stahlke is the sports counselor. She is in charge of handling majority of the athletes classes and help set them up to move on and transfer to the next level. She has been counseling and teaching at Victor Valley College (VVC) since 2013.She worked in multiple departments such as CalWorks and General Counseling, but she has been the athletic counselor since July 2018.

Since she was a kid, she loved to be a part of the solution. She really got into sports counseling when she was at playing soccer at University California Irvine (UCI), and her counselor, Bobby, helped her enter the path towards success. He inspired her to have the same support and care he had for all the athletes at UCI. Stahlke enjoys hearing that one of her athletes or any student is graduating. That is huge to her because she knows what it takes in order to gradu-

ate and move on. She understands the blood, sweat, and tears students put in.

She said “Fail early, fail often, and fail forward. We learn the most from failure!”

Sunday, May 12th, is a day to appreciate all Mothers in The United States. This is meant for all the mothers who have devoted everything for their children or family. The holiday honoring motherhood became a U.S holiday in 1914, created by Anna Jarvis. Mothers are the ones who are always there for their family showing support watching their family grow. Hardworking or not, holding the title of being a mother is a gift to cherish for the rest of their lives.

Gaining Trust(ees) at Victor Valley College By: Mikala Martinez Reporter Jennifer Tarpley has successfully completed her sixth meeting on the Board of Trustees for Victor Valley College (VVC) as of May 14. Tarpley was welcomed onto the board at the December 4, 2018 meeting, and was officially sworn in by her husband, Michael Tarpley, on December 11.

Former Board President, Marianne Tortorici, announced that she would not be running for re-election to the 2019 VVC Board of Trustees, the search was on for a fresh new face with a passionate and logical mind. The Area 1 vacancy that Tarpley filled was set by Trustee Joseph Brady’s election to the District’s Area 2 seat, as a result of redistricting.

Tarpley is currently working as Oro Grande School District’s Director of Administrative Services, but sets time out of her busy work and family life to participate in the VVC District’s affairs. Tarpley has been an active college community member, attending events such as Aesop’s (oh so slightly updated) Fables in the beginning of Spring semester with her son.

Tarpley has also been busy attending trustee workshops as far out as Sacramento, and states, “I’m happy to learn as much as I can about my roll and my duties therein.” She went on to say that through these workshops, she has learned numerous things about her role, accreditation, the Brown Act, and even expectaMothers, from page 8... mothers; they can either own a pet deeming it as a “kid/child” to them. Tarpley’s fellow trustees, Joseph Brady, Brandon Wood, John Pinkerton, and Dennis Henderson have all expressed many thanks to her throughout meetings and in personal encounters. Former Board President, Marianne Tortorici, stated on the night of Tarpley’s appointment, “I do feel that you will be welcomed on this board, and I do believe, knowing these individuals, that they will work to make sure that you have a cohesive Board.”

New VVC President Dr. Daniel Walden, who acts as secretary to the Board, has commented on Tarpley’s positive attitude and open mind during

The Board of Trustees has been hard at work in making several of Victor Valley College’s dreams come true, from the building and implementation of the One Stop, blueprints for a brand new stadium and conference center, talk of student housing to decrease the percentage of homeless youth and students, and a blooming positive relationship between the Board and other college organizations.

Victor Valley College (VVC) offers a course with the unique opportunity to gain experience as a student journalist with works published in the VVC Rampage, the school’s own newspaper. This course encourages students to seek out newsworthy stories and conduct interviews with the community both within and surrounding the campus.

The compilation of these stories makes up the articles that shoot VVC’s community with 5 issues per semester of the Rampage. The ever-changing

list of events surrounding VVC’s community allows student reporters to cover a wide variety of new stories while gaining useful skills as a journalist.

Professor Deanna Hays currently teaches the Fundamentals of Journalism course, along with its accompanying lab course and runs the VVC Rampage. The Rampage produces 5 issues every few weeks each semester and provides physical copies at no cost to students in the Library

and inside the Communication Center located on the second floor the Performing Arts Center in Room 213. As Chief Editor of the paper, Professor Hays provides students with all the tools they need to become effective reporters and provide the school with an informative and inclusive newspaper. Professor Hays hopes for her student reporters to successful reporters saying, “I hope they gain the knowledge to be accurate in their reporting, as well as fair and responsible.” Professor Hays also hopes to teach proper journalistic style writing to students as it is a “style of its

own.” According to Professor Hays, by the time that VVC Rampage student reporters reach the end of the semester, the students “get better at their headlines, they get better better at being more precise… and I feel they become better writers by being more succinct in what they want to say.”

This process of creating articles is different from the common process of creating academic essays and that process is what creates these improvements.

May 23, 2019 Page 10 The goal of VVC Rampage reporters is to write in a way that conveys facts and information that the reader may be interested in without any biases or irrelevancies to get the story in its entirety across and get the reader informed. Since the story is made of information gathered for the story as the reporter writes it, some students are driven by the idea of creating a story from scratch and turning into a functional and informative article. Reporter Edward Freer says that the most rewarding part of being a journalist has been, “Seeing the final product. Especially the very first paper… seeing the final product from where it came from is pretty cool.” This among other motivations is what helps student reporters to deliver their best work to the paper.

Many students have taken notice this course’s positive effects by the end of their time as reporters. Reporter Mikayla Martinez entered the class with hopes to “improve my writing skills in a different area of writing. I’ve been really good at creative writing all my life and I wanted to push my own boundaries and see what I was capable of doing.” Now at the end of the class, Mikayla’s most rewarding experience has been that she’s been able to successfully push her own boundaries and feels that she’s been validated in her achievement of graduating this coming June. Mikayla also feels that she’s been given the chance to speak out about topics that are important to her through the articles she has

written over the course of the semester.

The VVC Rampage newspaper is student-driven and could not survive without the support and involvement of students taking the introductory and advanced journalism classes. Many students join for personal growth and other students join to gain deeper involvement in the VVC community, but no matter what motivation brings a student to join, the VVC Rampage has many unique experiences to offer its student reporters.

Honor and Remember By: Dania Kaoud Reporter People all across the United States of America dedicate one day to honoring and remembering the people who gave their lives in the armed forces. Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May. Memorial Day, previously known as Decoration day, originated in the years after the Civil War. It became an official federal holiday in 1971. On Memorial Day, people visit the cemeteries where they have buried their loved ones. Others participate in parades, and/or gather together with family or friends to remember and honor the lives of ones they lost.

The idea to take a day to appreciate those lost at war began a little after the civil war in 1865. The civil war claimed more lives than any conflict in U.S. history. By the late 1860’s, Americans all over the United States, in various towns and cities begun holding tributes to these countless fallen soldiers. Nathan Franklin has been an English professor at Victor Valley College (VVC) for approximately four years.

Franklin cares for his students and said “I have students pick a city and in addition to picking a city they have to identify a particular trauma in the city and design an AI system to make the trauma go away. Part of me engaging and bettering this campus is enabling students to deal with certain traumas in their lives and to come

working her way up to the position of counselor. When asked how she cares about her students, Dube-Price stated, “I get to see tons and tons of students, I really get to know the student body here and I get to help them out.”

She went on to say that she also loved meeting students at the beginning of their VVC career and then getting to see them graduate from the campus two years later. On how she shows care about VVC itself, she summed it up by saying, “People get hope when they come here and I just really like being a part of that.”

Jones said. “By learning their names and something unique that shows who they are, they become more than just a name on a roster. It helps me care about them as an individual,” he concluded.

VVC cares for all its’ students and staff, and by actively caring back the “community” in community college grows stronger each year. to terms with these traumas and to be in a speculative and creative relation to these traumas and make them go away.”

Franklin helps his students deal with traumas, because mentally healthy students make a healthier college environment overall.

Mrs. Jennifer Fowlie has been a professor since 2005. She has lived in the High Desert since 1988, and graduated from Victor Valley College in 2001.

Mrs. Fowlie is a returning alumnus, so she likes to believe that she can relate to some students and the challenges they face. Mrs. Fowlie has both her Masters and Bachelors degree in communication studies. She usually teaches 5 to 6 classes every semester.

Mrs. Fowlie states “ I like to make it a point to learn every students name. I like to take interests in things they like, to show them that i value them as more than just a student, but a person.”.

She likes to keep her students as informed as they could be.

new challenge as far as if I’m going to make the cut for the next level up from where I was last show. Lynn Guardo also makes it possible for the shows to be recorded. It’s nice to watch the videos throughout the years and see me and my

Lynn Guardado is the production director, and Debra Blanchard, Lynn Guardado, Nancy Helms, Katherine Page, and Cicy O’Kalani Rosado are the faculty choreographers for this year’s show.

VVC student and performer, Taylor Salazar, has said about the show, “Personally, I enjoy the shows most during the learning process. Miss Katherine’s production class (Tap, Jazz, Musical Theatre, Ballet) has parts for all levels of dance. Every semester it’s a

friends make progress.” Salazar added, “People should come watch the show because there is so much hidden talent at VVC. So many dancers get overlooked because they ‘only dance at a community college’ but some dancers here are extremely passionate and it’s enjoyable to watch and get pulled into the world they’re dancing in. That’s how I got started, I went to see a show and knew that I wanted to be up there too.”

Salazar has been in six Victor Valley College dance productions, with this upcoming one is her seventh. The Kinesiology department at VVC offers many dance classes with a selection of ballet,

The movie stars Ryan Reynolds as the title character and also stars Justice Smith, Kathryn Newton, Bill Nighy and Ken Watanabe and is directed by Rob Letterman. The movie is about Tim Goodman, played by Justice Smith, who is trying to find out what happened to his father. After running into a Pikachu he can somehow understand and who can somehow understand him, they team up to help solve the case of his missing dad.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu is the first attempt at a live action Pokémon movie.

The trailers for the movie did a good job in setting up the tone for the movie. It is a fun adventure comedy that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Video game movies have a bad reputation with most of them being awful cash grabs that bank off the name alone and offer no sub-

stance and are usually nothing like the games they claim to adopt source material from.

However this movie is an exception, Pokémon Detective Pikachu is the first big video game movie I can think of that did the source material justice and it wasn't a big miss. The movie was a lot of fun and the plot very simple for younger audience members.

I grew up with Pokémon and it is very near and dear to my heart. It featured many

Embrace Your Ugliness By: Rebecca Medina Reporter UglyDolls is a kid-friendly cartoon with the voices of Kelly Clarkson, Pitbull, Nick Jonas, Wanda Sykes, Janelle Monae, and Blake Shelton to name just a few of this film’s A-list celebrities. The film was originally set to release alongside Detective Pikachu, but ultimately it was released a week before on May 3 to avoid competition. The film was inspired by a toy line of the same name where dolls are imperfect and are known to have the effect of, “so ugly they’re cute”.

UglyDolls is STX Entertainment’s first animated film about a group of imperfect friends who accidentally end up in the Institution of Perfection where they must go through training to find a forever pal in a human child. The main character, Moxy (Kelly Clarkson), lives up to her name by never giving up and pursuing every obstacle with, well, moxie. Moxy’s true drive is being there for a child whom she can love and care for. Despite ending up in Uglyville, which is later revealed to be a town full of reject toys, Moxy eventually finds her kid by tearing down the Institute

of Perfection and being the key to merging the citizens of Uglyville and the Institute of Perfection. Catchy songs, tears, and plenty of laughs are found along the way.

On any given review site, there will be multiple reviews putting this film down and expecting it to tell some revolutionary tale no PG-rated movie dare tell. This movie isn’t groundbreaking, and it has a very conventional plot about embracing your imperfections you’ll find in almost every cartoon aimed for kids. But, its got moxie. It has relatable characters who don’t mind their imperfections in the beginning, in fact, they love them. It has songs that will have audience members’ feet moving. Most importantly, it has Nick Jonas playing the villain and singing about his butt. The characters are made to hate themselves, but find that their imperfections actually saving them from their demise in the recycling bin.

Adults might find the recycling bin scene to be somewhat gruesome and on the

same level as Toy Story 3’s furnace scene, but don’t worry, they’re saved by a character’s imperfection. The comedy in the film will have even the adults laughing alongside the kids. Despite the bad reviews this film gets, this reporter saw kids enjoying themselves in the theater and leaving with a smile on their face.

This reporter’s own mother shed some tears because of the film’s positive message.

Take the kids to see this movie because, in the end, they’ll enjoy it despite adult’s opinions on it. They might even start to see imperfections as something to be celebrated not something to correct. If the kids or adults like the film, then there’s some good news: Hulu has bought the rights for UglyDolls and will have the film on the streaming site. Not only that, but they will be producing a T.V. series with the first season consisting of 26 episodes. There are many directions the series can go but most likely will pick up where the film left off in the Town of Imperfections.

Ultimately, I would rate this film a 3.7 out of 5. It’s easy to tell where the

plot is going, but it does not have great comedic timing and a sentimental value to its ending.

Art, from page 7 molding the perfect clay figure, VVC's art students have been applying themselves throughout this spring semester so that they can proudly unveil their projects. Professors have been mentoring their students and grooming their skill set all semester long.

With the help of their professors, students from beginners to professional artists, will have their creation side-byside for one night only. This amazing way to see the diverse collection of artists spreading their creative wings here on campus. Displaying the progress they have made through their determination and their artistic inspirations.

The VVC Student Art Show is open to the public and entrance to the show is free. For those who are interested in experiencing all of the exciting art pieces that will be on display this year, the show will be hosted on Thursday, May 30, 2019. It will be held on VVC's campus, 18422 Bear Valley Rd. Victorville, CA, in the Art Building, bldg. 22. The show will open its doors at 12:00 pm and the show will be ending at 8:00 pm.

Footsteps to You: A New Exhibition By: Alexandra Kirollos Reporter

The Victor Valley Museum located in Apple Valley has a new exhibit called “Footsteps To You: Chattel Slavery,” with objects from the Gore Collection, courtesy of the Black Voice Foundation. Gerry Gore, a historian, “had a goal to expose the horrors of slavery so that visitors of his hometown of Maysville, Kentucky could appreciate the perils experienced by the enslaved people, and the strength they needed to fight for their freedom.” The new exhibit features artifacts collected by Gore in an effort to build historic empathy. The exhibit officially opened May 2nd to the public.

The new exhibit focuses on slavery in America with artifacts and documents that showcase the two hundred years of abuse inflicted on African Americans. There are artifacts such as first person accounts, newspaper articles, and original objects of the slave trade serve to put viewers in the shoes of those who were enslaved. Learning about this is very important as it is our country’s history and we must be aware of it.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu is a great time that I feel regardless if you’re a fan of the franchise or not, anyone can follow along. I would recommend this movie to anyone who might be looking for a light hearted movie experience to get over the heartbreaking

Love Yourself: Speak Yourself Tour Experience (BTS) By : Ashley Flores Reporter

BTS (방탄소년단) has taken over the world! The group from South Korea have become one of the most successful boybands of all time and proved just how powerful they are the weekend of May 4 and 5 by starting their worldwide stadium tour “Love Yourself: Speak Yourself” at The Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, CA. Eight months before BTS sold out arenas all around the world, and they kicked off that tour with 4 completely sold out shows at the Staples Center in September of 2018.

BTS is a group of 7 boys born and raised in South Korea, it consists of 3 rappers and 4 vocalists. Their names are RM (Kim Namjoon), Jin (Kim Seokjin), Suga (Min Yoongi), JHope (Jung Hoseok), Jimin (Park Jimin), V (Kim Taehyung), and Jungkook (Jeon Jungkook). In the last few years, K-Pop (Korean pop) has become a very popular music genre; especially recently with a group like BTS that is achieving many things that many Western artists have yet to.They were the first ever “K-pop” group to perform at the Billboard Music Awards and have won the award for “Top Social Artist” three years in a row. BTS were invited to have an interview at the GRAMMY Museum, and attended the 2019 Grammys and presented the award for “Best R&B Album”. They have also given a speech at the United Nations in 2018 where they encouraged young teens and their fans to “Speak Yourself.”

BTS currently hold the world record for most viewed music video on YouTube with their new song “Boy With Luv” feat.

Many long term fans consider seeing BTS live in concert as being “lucky”. Fans later learned that tickets were difficult to buy. Experienced ticket buyers recommend having multiple devices on the Ticketmaster website and app.

Waiting in a “line” with 2,000+ people also trying to buy tickets on a website all at the same time is not a simple or calming experience. Trying to stay patient and keeping emotions in tact is key. After a few hours tickets were completely sold out. We all were very sad and disappointed and thought we weren't going to be able to see our favorite group live. After being sad for a few hours a miracle happened. The Rose Bowl’s Twitter account announced that they would be adding a second date to the stadium. The best way to describe trying to get BTS tickets is almost like the “Hunger Games.”

After all the days of waiting the day finally came, May 5th, 2019. I was very excited this being only the second show of the tour was so cool because it was still the very beginning of the tour and didn’t really know what to expect.

Once we got there it started to become more real. I began to think “Wow, I am really seeing my favorite group today”.

We waited in lines to get our

official merchandise to cherish and keep as memories. I got a tour t-shirt and a keychain. We took a lot of photos in front of the Rose Bowl sign and even did a mini photoshoot in front of a photo stand that had all 7 of the members.

The giant screens started to play their introduction video.

Then fireworks and out came the boys! Singing a song off their new album, Map of the Soul: Persona, “ Dionysus” a rock vibe song, the crowd went crazy! I screamed a lot.

Each member sang their own solo songs which was such a good experience. Seeing each member perform their own personal song that matches their unique music style and personality was amazing for the fans. After a 3 hour concert the show was over. The band was about to perform their final song. They gave a final speech to end the show and say how they felt. All 7 members gave adorable, meaningful speech. Some talked in full English and others had a translator to translate their sentimental words. It was a very emotional moment, the leader RM gave the best words that will stick with me for many years to come “I love all the names and all the awards we have, but for tonight, for this moment let's forget it, just call us ‘BTS’ and you’re

‘ARMY’ (fandom name).

Wherever you’re from, wherever you speak, however old you are, here in the Rose Bowl tonight we are one,. we speak the same thing, we have the same voice, we speak the same language and that's what we call a community, I love you all so much, thank you.” They then ended their show with a new song off their new album called “Mikrokosmos”. It was a very emotional. At that time I felt like that was where I felt the most relieved. The crowd held up their cell phone flashes up in the air and sang along.

Some of the members got emotional themselves and shed a few tears while looking at the crowd sing their lyrics back to them. It was a special moment for both the group and the fans in the audience.

Overall, the experience of the concert was amazing. I think that, given the opportunity, everyone should go see BTS in concert or listen to their music! Even if you’re not a fan or into the k-pop genre, I recommend giving them a chance. BTS songs have very deep personal meanings and lyrics that could relate to many people. Seeing them was an overall unreal and magical experience that I will cherish and remember forever.

Counting the Days Gone By: Jacob Wilson Reporter

Deacon’s steps came to a halt as he triggered a sound trap while attempting to sneak into a Drifter camp. The trap’s sound alerted a horde of infected creatures named Freakers in the valley below. Deacon found himself caught between a group of more than 100 animalistic monsters with a desire to feed upon whatever they can find and a group of men and women who dedicated what was left of their lives to killing whoever they came across. The choice in this instance was to run, to fight, or to play the two groups against each other to Deacon’s advantage. Moments like this are what define the player experience of Days Gone, an excellent cinematic video game experience unlike any other, produced exclusively for the Sony Playstation® 4 and released on April 26th.

“The world is dangerous all the time. It really does change the way you feel about exploration, about your skill upgrades, about your equipment.” Creative Director John Garvin told Dean Takahashi of VentureBeat. This quote is echoed in every element of not only Days Gone’s gameplay, but also its presentation.

Days Gone’s story picks up immediately with the final days of modern civilization.

The death of protagonist Deacon St. John’s humanity kicks off the story as he sends his wife away on a government helicopter in the hopes of saving her life. Deacon and his best friend Boozer watch the helicopter depart as they stand amongst the wreckage of their former world. Deacon’s story then jumps forward two years, presenting a drastically different world where nature has

reclaimed much of what humanity once called home.

Deacon and Boozer now drift through the decimated state of Oregon on their motorcycles, hunting down bounties and avoiding the hordes of infected zombie-like humans now known as Freakers. From here, Deacon’s story also becomes the player’s, with each situation and circumstance presenting itself with numerous possible solutions, all transforming the type of video game that is being experienced. These player choices even influence the story in ways that play to the benefit of the writing from John Garvin and Anne Toole.

Days Gone features a story full of intrigue and mystery within a world defined by loss and devastation.

Days Gone is a video game that is hard to classify, flowing across multiple genres effortlessly without ever feeling messy in its execution. It features elements of the survivalhorror, action-adventure, and open-world genres whilst retaining its focus on story and character development.

Through this melding of genres, the game becomes its own beast entirely. Every inch of

the world feels lived in and desolate, perfectly recreating what a landscape posthumanity could possibly be like. There is hardly ever a moment that feels truly safe in this post-apocalyptic tale and the game is made all the better for it.

This is the first attempt at a big budget video game production from Days Gone developer Bend Studios. Being a first-time production with such high aspirations, problems show themselves in the plethora of technical issues that plague the experience of Days Gone. Though these issues are frequent, they are never more than a minor gameplay hitch that breaks immersion, a simple audio cue that is inexplicably missing, or character animation that doesn’t fit the action on screen. Similarly, there is also notable issues with loading screens that happen far too often, breaking up the transition from gameplay to cutscenes in a noticeably disruptive manner. These technical issues do little to hinder the ambition and passion applied to every element of Days Gone. The game manages to shine through its shortcomings

by being a unique take on the well-worn zombie trend that has dominated pop culture in recent years.

Days Gone creative director John Garvin also said in his interview with Dean Takahashi, “It takes a while to play the game and really get a sense of how it’s different. But hopefully you discover it is different from other games.”

There is no better way to define the experience of Days Gone than with Garvin’s words. It is a game that demands patience of its players.

It is a game that takes its time not only to create the world in which Deacon St. John lives, but also to immerse the player into that world. It is a game that is both bold in its aspirations and brilliant in its execution. Though it suffers from technical issues, it is a video game that gives back to the player just as much as they put into it. It is a dangerous, brutal, blood-soaked tale of loss and desperation, one that every gamer, whether casual or hardcore, should take the opportunity to try for themselves.

Shazam! Hits The Big Screen By: Edward Freer Reporter In a cold dark cave, behind a magical door, lies the seven deadly sins guarded by the world of wizardry and magic.

We all have a superhero inside of us, but only the one that has a pure heart, our inner child, the champion, can save us from the seven deadly sins.

Based on the 1940’s DC Comics, and 1970’s TV series, Shazam, also known as Captain Marvel, hit the big screen with an outstanding opening weekend. Produced

by New Line Cinema and distributed Warner Bro. Shazam, according to Variety, grossed over 53 million domestically on opening weekend, April 5th, 2019, and 156 million worldwide. Starring Zachary Levi, the role of Shazam, a loveable young kid in a superhero’s body. Mark Strong stars as Dr. Sivana, who was once a child that was rejected by the last remaining wizard and ultimately plays the supervillain. Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman, is a delightful disabled kid who is part of a foster family that never seems to keep quiet. Ultimately, Freddy teaches Shazam how to be a superhero through his in-depth knowledge about all things superhero. Asher Angel stars ASB, From page 11 ASB student council in previous years as Public Relations Senator and Secretary. He is running for Vice President and has been campaigning on social media. Quintero was inspired with his belief “I do believe that everyone should be held accountable to the positions they were sworn in and to perform to the best of their ability.” He has kept in

Spending much of his young life running away trying to find his mother Batson eventually ends up with a loving adoptive family that at first, he wants no part of. Billy Batson is going to embark on the adventure of a lifetime and subsequently take a few loveable kids with him.

I have never been interested in comic book superhero movies, television, or books. Therefore venturing into doing a movie review of one was not high on my list of things to do so I had very low expectations. It turns out my thinking was off. Shazam fulfilled every part of a movie-going experience. Throughout the movie, I was astonished at just how well Shazam was made. The cinematography was as good as the Transformer movies and the special effects just blow me away. The way that scenes transferred from one plot to another, then one generation to the next really kept me into the movie. Also, the transformation of a juvenile kid and really juvenile superhero, into a young man who learns how to trust the

people around him made the movie relatable.. That trust will ultimately do the same for the superhero. The superhero movies I have seen are, for the most part, are dark and lifeless. Not Shazam! Shazam was a comical masterpiece that made you feel like a kid again.

Besides, it transformed you into a world of hope, joy, compassion and trust.

I not only feel that this is by far the best superhero movie I have ever seen, but it is also the best movie I have seen in years. If you or your family like to smile for a few hours out your day, go and enjoy Shazam I know, I sure did.

Damian Lillard’s Blazing Performance By : Alex Malan Reporter

The NBA Playoffs are where star players become legends. Where teams become dynasties. Where opponents become rivals. Where legendary moments are made. In just the last three years alone, the NBA has seen some of the most impressive individual and team achievements in the Playoffs that the league has ever seen.

In 2016, Lebron James and Kyrie Irving led the Cleveland Cavaliers to the NBA Championship against the 739 Golden State Warriors, after trailing the series 3-1. In 2017, Isaiah Thomas of the Boston Celtics had a 53 point game on the night of his sister’s birthday, who died in a car accident one day before the playoffs started that year. In 2018, Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry led the Golden State Warriors to their 2nd straight Championship.

The series included a 43 point Game 3 from Durant, which gave the Warriors a 3-0 lead over the Cavaliers, crushing the Cavs hopes of winning it all. With these astonishing moments of the last few years, fans around the world have been wondering, what will be the the next big Playoff story in 2019?

Damian Lillard of the Portland Trail Blazers was able to answer that question in the team’s first round series against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Lillard and Oklahoma City’s superstar point guard, Russell Westbrook, had an ongoing feud with each other throughout the regular season. It started on January

By Demetra Miller Reporter Marcedes Lewis was born in Long Beach, California on May 19, 1984 in Los Alamitos. At the age of eight, he played in the Long Beach Poly Pop Warner. Lewis started playing American football at Polytechnic High School of Long Beach. In 2001,his team played De La Salle of Concord, California in a televised game. Marcedes was named the high school All- American

by Parade Magazine and major recruiting services consider him a top candidate. After he graduated from high

school ,Marcedes attended UCLA and played on the Bru-

ins football team (2002-2005).

Through his college career he played in 49 games, had touchdowns, held 9 UCLA tight end records of all time, and he won the John Makely Award. This award was given for the top tight ends in college football. Lewis was also named the consensus firstteam All-American and AllPacific-10 selection.

Lewis started playing professional football for NFL in 2006 for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was drafted in the first round (28th overall) of 2006 and received his franchise tag on February 24, 2011. He played in 170 games, had 375 receptions and 4,502 receiving yards. Both ranked third in team history. Lewis made 33 touchdowns that placed him second in the franchise history, trailing Jimmy Smith.

He signed a five year contract with the Jaguars in 2011 worth $35 million with $17 million guarantee. November 2016 he had a calf injury that benched him until it was time to resign his contract with the Jaguars. At that time, he felt that the offer was to low and the manager didn't meet him

By Deanna Hays The time has come to say ‘goodbye’ to the Victor Valley College (VVC) Journalism

course and RamPage newspaper. My time as the Instructor for the course and Advisor for the RamPage newspaper, has been a wonderful journey. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting new students and watching them grow as reporters.

I not only enjoyed being the RamPage Advisor, but I have learned a lot from my students over the last four years. I found that students at Victor Valley College are amazing! I have been impressed with many students’

Lewis left the Jaguars went to play for the Green Bay Packers. He started his NFL 12th season with Green Bay Packers as tight end. He contracted $2.1 million to stay with the team for one year.

The contract also came with a $500.000 signing bonus. Starting the season, Lewis had 3 writing skills, work ethic, knowledge, thoughtfulness, insightfulness, and vision for the newspaper…and it could not have been done without them.

I would like to thank all the RamPage Reporters, Editors, and Editors-in-Chief, who gave so much to the paper and helped make my job more manageable and enjoyable. I consider the VVC RamPage newspaper one of the great things I have done in my lifetime. I am honored to have been a part of the editing, production, and guidance of the RamPage.
