Dallas Día de los A Cele ation of Life, Cu

Every year, the streets of Dallas come alive with vibrant colors, music, and a celebration unlike any other. The Dallas Día de los Muertos Parade has quickly become one of the city’s most beloved events, and behind it all is Mauricio & Norma Navarro, two of the key figures responsible for bringing this tradition to life. In an exclusive conversation, Mauricio shared how this incredible parade came to be and what it means for the city and its people.

Mauricio’s inspiration for the Dallas Día de los Muertos Parade came from a desire to preserve the cultural integrity of this important holiday. “I didn’t want Día de los Muertos to become another ‘Cinco del Drinko,’” he says, referring to how some cultural events lose their true meaning and become mere excuses to party. Mauricio and his team were determined to ensure that Día de los Muertos would remain a celebration of life, family, and remembrance, not a commercialized spectacle.

Mauricio reflects on his most memorable moment, which came during that very first parade. “I walked on stage and just saw the sea of people with an overflowing city hall,” he recalls. “That will always be my best memory to date.” Seeing the community come together in such a powerful way was an emotional experience for him and his team.

Like any big idea, the creation of the parade wasn’t without its challenges. Mauricio remembers the early days when people doubted whether the event would even happen. “It’s the unproven concept battle,” he explains. “Many doubted that we could pull it off.” But in 2019, the first parade took place, and those doubts quickly faded. The event was a massive success, drawing a huge crowd and marking the beginning of what would become a cherished Dallas tradition.

In the five years since that first parade, the event has grown and evolved in ways Mauricio couldn’t have imagined. “We’ve developed an incredible team,” he says. The parade now runs like a well-oiled machine, thanks to the dedicated members and leaders who have helped make it a staple for the city. It’s become a celebration that everyone in the community looks forward to each year.

The community’s response has only grown stronger over the years. Mauricio feels blessed by the support they’ve received, from community leaders to local families who show up year after year. And the parade is more than just an event—it’s an experience that touches all the senses. Local artists, performers, and vendors play a huge role in creating the unique atmosphere. “They bring their own DNA to the event,” Mauricio says. It’s an immersive celebration that’s as much about hearing and feeling the energy as it is about seeing the vibrant decorations and performances.

One of the parade’s signature elements is the Catrina Contest, a tradition that has become a favorite for both participants and spectators. The contest showcases incredible talent and creativity, with people traveling from near and far just to take part.

Looking ahead, Mauricio is excited about the future of the parade. He envisions it continuing to grow, not just in Dallas but expanding to other cities and communities. The goal is to bring the spirit of Día de los Muertos to even more people and inspire others to embrace the culture.

For those new to Día de los Muertos, Mauricio offers simple advice: “Just come with an open mind and take it all in. It’s life-changing, and there’s nothing like it.” As the Dallas Día de los Muertos Parade enters its next chapter, it promises to remain a celebration of life, love, and the deep cultural roots that make it so special.

Trendy Quinceañera Party Favors

Quinceañera party favors are essential to have on your special day. For a trendy quinceañera party, you’ll want party favors that are both stylish,

Party favors are a great way of thanking everyone who came to the party and helping them remember how much of a great time they had. It’s important to make the guests feel special with fun party favors.

Today’s party favors are both useful and cool. Personalized items are very popular today. In my opinion personalized party favors are my favorite because it expresses who you are and what you like and people will look at it and think of you and your beautiful day. For example, custom keychains or accessories like glow sticks with your name on them and date or design to express the theme of the party. These can be great gifts for guests because they are unique and remind people of the party.

Other great party favors are slippers so guests can take off their heels when their feet start to hurt and put slippers on so they can continue to dance. Also, some items like hand held personalized folding fans or motorized fans that match the party’s theme, and little hand held mirrors with an elegant design. Or custom cups and utensils that guests can take home. Mini succulents with a note attached to them can be very cute.

Custom gourmet chocolates and macarons with your name on them are also a hit. They come in pretty boxes that you can customize and taste delicious, making them a sweet way to thank guests. Sparkly reusable water bottles are another smart choice because they’re handy and help the environment. Gift baggies with custom candy inside like M&M’s, skittles, and Starburst candies are very popular and delicious.

These party favors help guests remember your special day and show them that their presence was appreciated. By choosing gifts that are both fun and useful, you can make the quinceañera even more memorable for everyone. Quinceanera party favors are a blend of tradition and trend aiming to make the party more memorable and fun. I hope this helps you find what you can add to your party to make it more special for you and your guests.

QUINCE CONTENT CREATORS

Quinceañeras are now shooting for content!!

Hi, it’s Vanessa again! Are you interested in filming content on your phone on the day of your quinceañera? Nowadays, quinceañeras are all about capturing content. Let’s be honest, we look back at our phone’s photo album way more than we do a physical one. Plus, you can share videos and moments from your special day with family, friends, and everyone else online.

Of course, it’s still amazing to have professional photos and videos to look at, but everything has gone digital now. The digital age has revolutionized how we plan, celebrate, and share these significant milestones. It’s pretty cool since most quince packages now offer things like websites for invitations, RSVPs, gifts, and galleries for family pictures.

Some people even hire content creators who specialize in capturing moments on smartphones and other digital devices, so they can share them with people who couldn’t make it. I think that’s such an amazing idea! A lot of quinceañeras have gone viral on TikTok, sharing cute dances in their dresses or just capturing memories of their night.

If you’re interested in more content ideas, try doing a “GRWM” (Get Ready With Me) video the day of your quince, or even before, where you talk about what you’re most excited for. Documenting the preparation process is super fun too! Try to plan ahead as much as possible, but keep in mind that not everything will go exactly as planned. The day goes by so fast, and honestly, I would prioritize enjoying the moment over anything else.

On the day of your quince, you probably won’t have much time to record yourself, so try getting a friend or family member to help. If that’s not possible, coordinate with your photographer! You can give them your phone and send them ideas of what you want recorded beforehand. They’ll likely be able to get those candid shots we all love. I’m sure your photographer will be more than willing to help, as they also need behind-the-scenes content for their portfolios.

Just remember to use social media wisely and be mindful of what you post and share on your special night. It’s nice to keep a few moments private. Don’t forget to use the hashtag #midiamagazine on TikTok or Instagram! I can’t wait to see what your dress and your special day look like. Best of luck, and have lots of fun, queens!

The Most Outrageous TikTok Celebrations

Quinceañera Queens Hey!

Been a while!

It’s Chelsey again I recently changed my artistic name from Queen’C to ChelseyAkira so there’s that! But anyways today we’re gonna talk about that one girl (Vanessa) with the red dress who’s 15 was a complete scandal. All because of her Baile sorpresa / surprise dance . Now this was all over TikTok at some point and people were going crazy about it ! I’m all about controversy and opinion, there were many people saying there wasn’t anything wrong with this dance ( Including the quinceañera’s mom ) as stated in an interview “ I don’t see the problem. “ , and many people saying it was definitely not okay. She was wearing a sparkly romper that didn’t cover what it needed to, it seemed more like swimwear than something that you would wear to your own 15. She danced songs by Romeo Santos very sensually and some said that it was somewhat sexual. As she did dance on her chambelan in an intimate way. She also danced to various reggaeton songs which as you know involve intimacy in dancing , all of this caused A LOT of people to question whether or not the parents were aware , as stated before Vanessa’s mom was completely aware and okay with the idea of the dance, so they didn’t really understand the backlash. Maybe it’s because of the fact that a quinceañera is traditionally the day you come out as a young lady to society , so many think this was disrespectful towards her family and the traditional quinceañera . These are 2 very different points of view , and there will be many more . But what do y’all think about all of this ? I think some people went way too far calling this girl names as she is still just a teen , I guess that why everyone had very strong opinions about this. Anyways guys this is ChelseyAkira Signing off!

Though it may seem similar to Halloween because of the dates and some of the imagery, it is actually very different. Dia de los Muertos has deep cultural and spiritual significance, and its origins trace back thousands of years to ancient Meso-American civilizations like the Aztec and Maya, long before the Spanish arrived in the Americas.

So, how does it work? Dia de los Muertos kicks off on October 31st and lasts until November 2nd. October 31st marks the beginning of the celebration, where families light a white candle to remember those who have passed away. November 1st is known as “Dia de los Inocentes” or “Dia de los Angelitos,” a day dedicated to children and babies who have died. This part of the holiday is filled with tender, childlike themes, and the offerings often include toys, candies, and other items that children would enjoy. November 2nd, known as “Dia de los Difuntos” or “Dia de los Muertos,” is the day to honor adults who have passed away.

One of the most beautiful and central traditions of Dia de los Muertos is the creation of altars, or “ofrendas.” These altars are constructed in homes and public spaces to welcome the spirits of the deceased back to the world of the living for a brief time. They are vibrant and colorful, adorned with marigold flowers, called “cempasuchil,” which are believed to guide the spirits with their bright colors and strong fragrance. Papel picado, a type of perforated paper, is often draped over the altar to represent the fragile connection between life and death. Families also place photos of their departed loved ones, as well as their favorite foods, drinks, and even items that were special to them during their lives. A traditional food often found on the altars is “pan de muerto,” a sweet bread that is baked especially for this occasion.

Have you ever heard about Dia de los Muertos, or e Day of e Dead?

It’s a vi ant and meaningful cele a- tion rooted in Mexican cu ure, focused on remembering and honoring loved ones who have passed away.

ico around the same time as Dia de los Muertos, and many believe they carry the spirits of the deceased with them, creating a mystical connection between nature and the spiritual world.

The spirit of Dia de los Muertos is about bringing people together, whether they are family members, friends, or even entire communities. It’s a time to share stories, laugh, and pass on traditions. While skull makeup and costumes have become more popular due to their portrayal in films and media, the real heart of the celebration is in the memories shared and the love felt for those who have gone before us. It’s a joyful and uplifting time, not a day of mourning.

This holiday, which began in the rural areas of Mexico and Central America, started to spread to larger cities during the 1980s. In 2008, UNESCO recognized Dia de los Muertos as an important part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The holiday has continued to gain visibility internationally. For example, the opening scene of the 2015 James Bond movie Spectre featured a massive Dia de los Muertos parade, sparking interest in the tradition worldwide. Similarly, Disney’s animated film Coco (2017) beautifully captured the essence of the celebration, bringing it into the spotlight for new generations.

In Dallas, the Navarro group began organizing the city’s Dia de los Muertos parade in 2019, and it has quickly become a highly anticipated annual event. This year, Mi Dia Magazine will be part of the parade and festival in Downtown Dallas on Saturday, October 26, 2024. We invite you to join us to witness the beautiful costumes, vibrant floats, and the rich cultural heritage that this event celebrates. It’s a wonderful opportunity to embrace a tradition that honors both life and death in a meaningful way. We hope to see you there!

But Dia de los Muertos isn’t just about remembering humans. October 27th is dedicated to dogs! In ancient times, people believed that the Xoloitzcuintli, a native breed of dog, helped guide souls to the underworld. Even today, Xolo dogs are seen as spiritual companions in this celebration. Monarch butterflies also hold special significance. These butterflies migrate to Mex-

Bold Eyes

For Quinceañeras in 2024, eyes are the perfect place to have some fun with makeup! While the rest of the look stays soft and natural, bold eyeshadow colors like deep purples, emerald greens, and shiny golds are super popular. Winged eyeliner and big, full lashes are also a big trend, giving you a bold and stunning look.

Soft and Natural

If you’re into a softer vibe, romantic makeup is totally in this year! Think pastel eyeshadows, soft pink or peachy blush, and glossy lips. This look is all about being sweet and feminine, which fits perfectly with the magical feel of a Quinceañera. Fluttery lashes and a little sparkle on your eyelids or cheeks to bring out that fairy-tale princess vibe!

Statement Lips

Want your lips to stand out? Bold lip colors are trending big time in 2024! Bright reds, deep berry shades, and even fun colors like coral or plum are making a statement. If you go bold on the lips, keeping your eye makeup simple balances the look, making your lips the star of the show.

Customization

This year is all about personalizing your makeup! Makeup artists are helping girls create looks that match their unique style. Whether you want to use your favorite colors, match your makeup to your dress, or include something special from your culture, the idea is to make sure your quince makeup is totally YOU.

Sustainable Beauty

Many girls are choosing eco-friendly makeup products that are good for the planet! Sustainable and cruelty-free beauty brands are becoming super popular, with more people caring about the environment. It’s cool to see that choosing eco-friendly options can still look amazing and be part of your quince look.

A quinceañera is such a special moment for any 15-year-old girl, symbolizing her journey from being a little girl to stepping into her teen years. It’s not just about the beautiful dress or the amazing party, but also the makeup that helps complete the perfect look. In 2024, quince makeup trends are all about mixing classic elegance with fresh, modern styles. Let’s dive into some of the coolest quinceañera makeup trends for this year!

I’m Christina Sanchez, but you might know me on Instagram as Catrina Christina. This year, I’m celebrating my 20th anniversary of becoming a Catrina, and I’m excited to share my story with you.

It all started in 2004 when my dad passed away. That’s when I learned about the beautiful tradition of Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. This tradition honors loved ones who have passed by keeping their memory alive. One of the most powerful beliefs in Día de los Muertos is that people experience three deaths: when they stop breathing, when they are buried, and the last death, which happens when no one remembers them. This idea made me realize that I could help keep my dad’s memory alive. That same year, I dressed up as a Catrina for the first time and went to a Día de los Muertos celebration at Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

H&MUA in Los Angeles, my Catrina look has become something I’m really proud of. Día de los Muertos means so much to me because it’s a beautiful way to celebrate both life and death. Families build ofrendas (altars) to invite the spirits of their loved ones to visit, decorating them with marigolds, candles, and their favorite things. The smell of incense and sage at these celebrations always brings me a sense of peace.

Each year, I try to challenge myself by creating an even more amazing look than the last. It’s not easy—sometimes it takes four hours just for the makeup and another 20 hours to get dressed! But it’s worth it because I do it to honor my dad and others who have passed.

Something that still amazes me is how people around the world have gotten tattoos of my Catrina look. It’s such an honor to know that my image brings comfort and inspiration to others.

Since then, I’ve returned every year, making my Catrina look better and better. It’s taken years of practice, but now, thanks to my amazing makeup team at

To all the young girls out there, my advice is to enjoy life and not take appearances too seriously. Focus on living in the moment and being true to yourself. That’s what matters most!

“We must also be aware of its impact on people and cultures behind the scenes.”

Meet Mauricio Carrera, a powerhouse in the fashion industry with over 25 years of experience in coaching, production, and runway direction.

From working in New York Fashion Week to becoming a key figure in Dallas fashion, Mauricio is a go-to expert for up-and-coming designers and models alike.

“I do many things in fashion,” Mauricio says, his passion evident. “I’m a runway producer, fashion show director, casting call organizer, and even a stage director for El Centro College’s Fashion Show Gala. I also worked as the stage director and runway coach for New York Fashion Week in 2015.”

Mauricio’s love for fashion goes beyond the surface. His journey into the industry started with a dance

company that toured across the United States.

“I was in my early 20s, and being on stage made me realize how much I loved expressing myself creatively,” he shares. “That energy I felt on stage, I wanted to pass it along to others through coaching.”

His deep commitment to culture and fashion plays a big role in his work. Mauricio explains how his perspective has evolved: “Fashion is not just about clothes. It’s about culture, identity, and how we express ourselves. My experience has taught me to blend cultural elements into everything I do, from working with designers to producing fashion shows.”

“Fashion is constantly evolving. It’s a conversation that never stops.”

When working on a fashion project, Mauricio emphasizes the importance of communication. He listens carefully to his clients to incorporate their vision and cultural backgrounds into each piece. “Every project has a cultural background,” Mauricio says. “I mix elements from different cultures to achieve what the client wants.”

Mauricio also shares how staying connected with trends while honoring cultural heritage is key to his coaching.

“Fashion is constantly evolving. It’s a conversation that never stops,” he says. “The runway, to me, is an essential element of fashion, and I bring theatrics into it—creating movement, energy, and tone for every garment.”

One experience that shaped his view of cultural awareness was working on a high-end production that involved glamorous designer handbags. “I heard they were being made in poor conditions in India. That really affected me,” he reflects. “It made me realize that while fashion is beautiful, we must also be aware of its impact on people and cultures behind the scenes.”

Mauricio’s unique approach to fashion and culture makes him a trailblazer, and his passion for helping others express themselves through fashion is truly inspiring!
