WORK RELATED ASSESSMENTS OVERVIEW Sickness absence from work is an increasingly important issue for employers in both the public and private sectors. Its impact on productivity, as well as its personal effect on the individual, their families and their colleagues, is being recognised more and more.

Here at Robert Gordon University, we offer a range of advanced services and facilities to assist employers minimise work related injuries, promote wellness and support the early safe return to work of staff following ill health or injury.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS • Reduced absence through ill health • Reduced work related injuries • Support employers to maintain a healthy, productive workforce and to promote a healthy working environment WORK RELATED ASSESSMENTS Our team of highly qualified, experienced and professional Occupational Therapists offer a holistic approach to reducing sickness absence from work through a range of tailor made services. By conducting a range of work related standardised assessments with employees using sophisticated equipment and software, we can provide objective and comprehensive information on their work capabilities and guide return-to-work decision making.

All assessments are carried out at our state-of-the-art Human Performance Laboratory at our Garthdee campus and typically, each assessment takes a day to complete.

Appointments will be scheduled at a mutually convenient time for you the employer and the individual. Where necessary, a worksite assessment may also be recommended to fully assess the individual’s job demands and to support return to work decision making.

FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY EVALUATION (FCE) An integral component of any return to work process, the FCE provides a comprehensive, objective and performance based measurement to compare an employee’s physical capabilities with work demands to determine their ability to return to work following injury or ill health.

An FCE will • • • • •

Identify an employee’s ability to meet specific physical work demands.

Answer specific questions regarding an employee’s capabilities or limitations Identify the need for workplace modifications, adjustments and further rehabilitation Identify an employee’s work capabilities for future job searching Validate stakeholders’ opinions and decision making process

A comprehensive, easy to read report will be produced detailing an employee’s ability to return safely to work and identifying the need for any workplace modifications, adjustments or additional rehabilitation. Our qualified staff are available to advise regarding further rehabilitation needs or programmes if requested.

NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT Following a specific illness or injury an individual may experience neuropsychological problems which may impact on their work performance. These may present as • • • • •

Difficulties with concentration Memory Problem solving Decision making Following or interpreting information

In order to determine an employee’s ability to safely perform work tasks, further understanding of how these difficulties may affect their work performance will be required. An appropriate neuropsychological assessment will help identify the need for any work adjustments or modifications, manage potential risks or be used to guide further rehabilitation.

Abermed recently requested a Visual Perception Evaluation to be carried out at the RGU Human Performance Laboratory. The evaluation was required to assess the capability of an individual with a visual impairment to meet work demands and carry out necessary functions.

A thorough assessment was carried out at the Human Performance Laboratory and a comprehensive report was issued detailing the individual’s performance capabilities and highlighting any areas of difficulty that could impact on function. The assessment and the resulting report were carried out in a timely fashion and provided us with a comprehensive and objective assessment. Abermed would be pleased to use this excellent service again.
