Kristina has worked in the lighting industry as a designer and consultant for 13 years.

Currently working as a senior lighting designer for Atkins Global within the lighting team; her recent projects have included London City Airport expansion project and Euston Station redevelopment.

During her time at Zumotbel (ZG) Lighting projects with the End User retail team included Jaguar Landrover, London Olympia, Dixons, Bentley Motor and large roll out projects for LIDL retail, Sainsbury’s and ASDA. Previously, Kristina ran her own design consultancy practice, with clients such as the Carbon Trust, the Electrical Contractors Association (ECA), Her experience as consultant includes advice for the Building Research Establishment (BRE), Lancaster House, Edinburgh airport, BAA, Greenwich University and lighting designer for the Dementia Services Development Centre (DSDC) and as a guest lecturer at City University in London.

Mark Herring leads the Strategy function for National Grid Electricity System Operator. Mark’s focus takes a whole energy system perspective on the challenge of decarbonising Great Britain’s energy system, which spans diverse topics ranging from open data in smart flexible energy systems, the system impact of electric vehicles, carbon capture and storage, and the potential of a hydrogen economy in GB. His current work combines an understanding of the long term uncertainty in the energy industry through the Future Energy Scenarios, with its application in informing the long term direction of industry, policy, and the GB System Operator. He is also chair of the ENA Open Networks Whole Energy System workstream, which is the first forum for collaboration by energy networks across both gas and electricity.

Prior to his current role Mark was the Head of Innovation for the System Operator, and has previous experience in rapidly transforming organisations across a number of industries and geographies.

Teneille is Policy Manager at Smart Energy GB, the organisation delivering the national consumer engagement and behaviour change campaign for Britain’s smart meter rollout.

Teneille works across all teams at Smart Energy GB, ensuring the company understands the technical and policy developments within the government’s broader programme. She works closely with the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy to ensure that colleagues there are informed of the work of Smart Energy GB. Additionally, she is responsible for the accuracy of claims made by Smart Energy GB in all local and national communications activity across all departments, including broadcast advertising, partnerships, and PR.

5 THINGS I LEARNED FROM GETTING SMART WRONG When people speak of Smart Buildings, there’s a lot of hype. In this presentation, Matthew will share his experiences of the times he got it wrong, and what he learned from it.

Matthew was elected as a Fellow of the RSA in 2017 and named as the Institute of Mechanical Engineers Young Visionary 2016/2017 for his work in creating The World’s Most Connected Building. Matthew sits on the CIBSE’s Intelligent Buildings Group and is a keynote speaker at international industry events. He was a co-author in the Encyclopaedia of Sustainable Technologies.

WHAT SMART BUILDINGS MEAN FOR THE WORLD OF WORK As smart technology infiltrates every part of our lives, what role will it play in the future of work? Whilst the opportunities appear to be endless, how will organisations navigate the legal and ethical challenges, and will our work and non-work lives blur? Chris Moriarty is Director of Insight and Engagement at the Institute of Workplace and Facilities Management (IWFM).

Previously he was Managing Director at Leesman, the world’s leading assessor of workplace effectiveness, where he was responsible for the creative and strategic development of the Leesman brand in the UK and internationally. Chris has extensive professional body experience, as well as a track record in delivering industry-wide thought leadership and policy campaigns on top of strategic marketing and sales experience. Prior to his first spell at BIFM as Head of Insight and Corporate Affairs, where he worked to establish the Institute as the voice of the sector, he was Head of Corporate Affairs at the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

A LOOK INTO THE FUTURE OF HOW AI IS TRANSFORMING HEALTHCARE Lester will talk about the challenges currently facing healthcare provision and sets the scene in a wider context for why change has to be embraced, what the opportunities, solutions and necessities are as seen from someone who operates on the global stage.

Alan Somerville is the Head of the Building Performance Group at BRE, which delivers world class benchmarking, analytical, advisory and data services to the owners and occupiers of residential and commercial buildings across the globe. The work is currently delivered in over 80 countries. A chartered surveyor by profession he has been working in real estate markets for over 25 years. He joined BRE in August 2018 from Cushman & Wakefield where he led the Energy, Infrastructure & Sustainability team for the EMEA region. Prior to that he held senior project roles for the outsourcing of the Defence Infrastructure Organisation and the IPO of a coal mining company. For 12 years he was a Projects Director with Grosvenor, the property investment vehicle of the Duke of Westminster. He has worked on many significant projects including Canary Wharf and is focussed on the commercial outcome.

KNX? You’re probably hearing about KNX a lot more these days. You know it should have a place in your project planning but aren’t quite sure exactly what it is or how it will transform projects.

So, here’s a reminder about real building intelligence that keeps you in the driving seat.

Let’s be very clear at the outset on what KNX is NOT. It is not just another brand or a single manufacturer’s product range. Rather, it is a common, open language that enables different devices to work together. KNX enables consultants to design exactly the right system for individual needs, because they can mix and match devices from different manufacturers. There’s no proprietary lock in.

Future-proof KNX systems also step up to the plate on long-term reassurance. The KNX software that consultants/systems integrators use and the certification of the KNX products they choose, are managed by the independent and international KNX Association. KNX has the homeowners’ interests first.

KNX automation is based on the simple, logical idea of doing away with the problems of isolated devices by ensuring all components communicate via one common language. The manufacturer or brand of the devices you want to use doesn’t matter. You mix and match as you please. You stay in control.

Whether you want to control lighting, shutters, security systems, energy management, heating, ventilation, air-conditioning systems, signalling and monitoring systems, interfaces to service and building control systems, remote control, audio and video control ... the list can be endless ... a KNX system can be designed to fit. KNX calls it interworking.

Hundreds of the worlds best-known control manufacturers who recognise that this is the way the market is inevitably moving; have invested in designing and producing KNX-compatible controls and putting them through the rigorous KNX certification process. If these multinational giants know it makes sense, perhaps we should follow?

Futureproofing Customers’ needs change and new gadgets come onto the market. That’s where KNX has another real edge because backwards compatibility is guaranteed. Any new KNX product will work alongside existing KNX controls when added to a system – no matter how old the system is.

This backward compatibility guarantee is possible because there is so much intelligence at the device level in a KNX system, allowing for straightforward replacement. That also means there is no central point of failure, so a fault in one device won’t ‘crash’ the whole system. In addition, adding new devices only needs wiring back to the bus at the nearest cable location KNX node which might be a nearby switch or PIR detector. The rest is done by the system designer, using KNX ETS software.

The bottom line is that there will always be compatible products available to replace or upgrade controls in an original installation and the original controls will never be obsolete. KNX is also one of the most cyber-secure solutions on the market today, which is reassuring as people put more and more functionality under intelligent control.

A KNX installation will last for a lifetime. This is good news in a world of ever-rising house prices, high costs of moving home and spiralling care costs where staying put becomes an increasingly necessary option. With a KNX solution, homes are more-easily adapted for later living with products such as switches with audible feedback or more voice activation.
