Welcome to the Dementia, Care and Nursing Home Expo 2020, the UK’s most dynamic social care event dedicated to inspiring business growth and a sustainable social care model.

In what has been a turbulent year for the social care industry - with a general election and question marks over future budgets - one thing has remained as consistent and stable as ever. The vital work carried out every day by social care workers for those who need it the most.

The seminar programme at the event covers key discussions from experts throughout the industry in specific seminar halls. For example, the Business Growth Theatre will discuss how business owners can generate more income that will enable them to increase their budget, allowing them to spend more on their business, improving the standard of care. This is important due to the fact that between 2009/10 and 2016/17, adult social care spending fell by almost 10%, which amongst other factors, will result in a funding gap of between £2.8 billion and £4 billion by the end of 2020.

Another key seminar hall is the Dementia Care Theatre. The number of people living with dementia is set to double to 1,600,000 by 2040, so the industry needs to receive up-

to-date and high quality education regarding the affect the disease can have on individuals and organisations throughout social care - if a care provider knows how to care for people with dementia properly, it will attract more customers. The other theatres for visitors to discover are the Care Environments Theatre, Care Development Theatre, and the Training & Recruitment Theatre.

This year the Care Quality Commission (CQC) is delighted to be official Educational Partner of the Home Care Expo 2020 and Dementia, Care & Nursing Home Expo 2020.

This is a fantastic event that serves to help every single person working in the social care industry.

As the independent regulator of health and social care in England it is vital we have a visible presence; giving attendees the opportunity to ask questions and seek out our expert advice.

As education partner for the show, this year our Inspection Hub will provide a one-stop-shop for guidance on inspection procedures and any questions regarding registration and good practice.

The Whole Home Approached – recognising need, skills and building connections

Presentation of the research report on the well-being of care workers. The research was conducted on over 600 care workers and looked at the physical, psychological and economical well-being of care workers as well as perceptions of care work.

This session will explore the concept of a Whole Home Approach and reflect on the traditional view of activity in care homes. NAPA suggests a focus on wellbeing and engagement is essential in order to meet the changing needs of the people we support. We will consider how activity provision has evolved and how we can build on what we know works in order to ensure all those in receipt of care and support live content creative and connected lives.

WE’RE LOOKING FORWARD TO A PROSPEROUS NEW FINANCIAL YEAR. ARE YOU? Next month (April) sees the start of the new financial and NHS year. A key question for social care is: what will 2020-21 hold for our sector? The risky move of holding the December 2019 General Election has paid off, and our Government now has a clear mandate, and a clear majority to take the country forward over the next five years. There can be few excuses now for not ‘getting social care done’.

Of all the parties pledging action on social care before the election, the Conservatives were, perhaps, the least specific about what would be in store for our sector. The pledge to build a cross-party consensus is welcome. But as we have seen in the distant, as well as the more recent past with Brexit, this can take time and sometimes quite significant political risk to achieve – and with the other political parties thrust into such fundamental disarray – it is, perhaps, questionable, whether there are any opposition health department ministers in post with whom to get building. For a lot of people, their best guess is that, yet again, the care homes who will do best are those that look to their own resources and initiative to achieve the progress and improvements they want.

This year, for the first time, there are two Dementia Care and Nursing Home Expos to go to: the first at the NEC Birmingham on March 17-18, and for the first time this year, also at London ExCel on September 15-16. Both have been designed specifically to help care homes rise to the challenges they face, specifically, how to grasp the mettle of quality development in the face of the ongoing funding shortfall.

Key features of the March DCNH Expo include a new activities arena where, throughout both days of the event, there will be live demonstrations of quality-assured creative and engaging activities for care, nursing and residential homes to adopt
