SIXTH FORM WEEKLY BULLETIN Friday 16th June 2017

Issue No: 43

Message from Mrs Freeman The sun is shining, the roses are out and the Sixth Form are enjoying ice lollies in the garden.... what a lovely picture this is! The sad events of the last few weeks have sought to destroy this freedom, happiness and equality that we as female British citizens have come to enjoy and take for granted. It is at times like this that as a community we must come together, support each other and demonstrate both the school and British values in how we live our lives. Democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance are all key to ensuring that future generations of RMS girls continue to experience the same freedom and happiness as the Sixth Formers I am watching today. Have a good weekend everyone!

Message from Miriam On Tuesday, excited Year 7s set off to the Verulamium Museum in St Albans for a day of enrichment in their studies of Latin and History. I am sure my peers in Year 12 will agree that it is extremely difficult to believe that we took part on that trip five years ago! Not only this, but Civil War Day took place for the Year 8 girls last week, an event which was now four years ago for us. I, for one, find it very odd when these things come around again every year and we find ourselves older – perhaps wiser – and certainly with more exams to worry about! Our time at RMS has seemed to pass us by so quickly; for something which has taken up such a large part of our lives so far, it unsettles me more than a little to reflect on quite how speedily it has all flown by. It seems only last week that we were introduced to the girls who would be in our form when we started in Year 7 and now they are all old friends. However, we have managed to pack a lot into the past six academic years – I have been fortunate enough to visit Valencia and Berlin and other girls have been even further afield to places such as China and Ghana on visits to reaffirm links with partner schools around the world. Let’s make the most of the time we have left. Miriam

Year 12 UCAS Forum Monday 19th June A reminder about UCAS events taking place on Monday. During the school day Year 12 students will travel to Bedford University for a UCAS exhibition. You will have lessons 1 and 2 and then will depart at 10.00am. You are welcome to wear your own clothes for this event, but if it is hot you should ensure that they are decent! In the evening there is a UCAS forum for parents and students. Fred Binley from the University of Southampton will be talking about UCAS applications and focus on how to write the best personal statement. This is essential viewing for everyone applying to university. Form Tutors and relevant other members of staff will be there to answer any questions. Tea, coffee and cookies are available from 7.00pm and the talk will start promptly at 7.30pm in the New Mark Hall. Predicted grades have been explained to students this week and will be given out during lessons next week. Women in Computer Science We are currently witnessing the 'Fourth Industrial Revolution' that is fundamentally changing the way we live, work, and relate to one another. We already have billions of people connected by mobile phones and the Internet, giving rise to unprecedented connectivity, knowledge and data processing power. This revolution is already transforming societies and the global economy with disruptions like Facebook and Airbnb already here and more to come soon with breakthroughs in Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, Internet of Things (IoT), autonomous vehicles, and quantum computing. Studying computer science can empower young people, making them both the creators and great beneficiaries of the future, but it is a stark reality that the UK currently has the lowest percentage of female computer engineering professionals in Europe. This is deeply concerning, as this new technology could have a disproportionately greater negative impact on women concerning jobs in particular. Attention is needed urgently, now. Taking place on International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) on the 23rd June, Women in Computer Science will address how knowledge of computing plays a major role in our future, how studying computing may empower young people, and how the pressing issues the gender gap presents to society needs to be tackled. Chaired by Saadia Zahidi, Head of Education, Gender and Work of World Economic Forum and hosted by Maja Pantic, Professor of Affective and Behavioural Computing at Imperial College, London, the event is involving the following inspirational women computer scientists and engineers to encourage and inspire our future leaders and pioneers: 

Dame Wendy Tan, General Partner, Entrepreneur First, Co-Founder and CEO, Moonfruit, Board Trustee Alan Turing Institute

Dr Sharon Goldwater, University of Edinburgh School of Informatics, BCS Roger Needham Award 2016

Dr Sabine Hauert, Lecturer in Robotics, University of Bristol, President & Co-founder, Robohub

Dr Holly Cummins, IBM Bluemix Garage London, Technical Lead

Maxine Mackintosh, Data science/Dementia PhD Student at UCL & Founder of One HealthTech

Each participant will give a 10-minute talk on their field of study and work, what makes them tick as the experts, and their personal story on how they decided to choose computer science as their profession. The event will engage the audience in a stimulating public debate and inspire young women to take charge of their destiny, openly discussing the importance of computer science for our digital future, why computer science can empower women, and how we can encourage more young women to become professionals in his exciting new area. https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/women-in-computer-science-tickets-35019994747
