Introduction The presence of these images is beguiling. Photo Imaging in the School of Media and Communication at RMIT continues to redefine its outstanding reputation for producing graduates with a high degree of technical skill combined with ever increasing precision and creative empathy. Over time, we have learnt that vocational education at RMIT is not just about giving students a trade or creating pathways into higher education degree programs or even simply allowing direct reconnection back into education. It is about all these things; but more than this, vocational education allows the individuals who complete our certificates, diplomas and associate degrees to contribute to industry at the forefront of their discipline. Students enjoy our programs because they develop an excellent skill set using up-to-date equipment in the heart of the city. Their experience is further enhanced by deep engagement with industry and with the wider community. Our graduates might become highly valued technicians or respected assistants but in Photo Imaging we tend to breed ambitious entrepreneurs who make images and make things happen. Each work presented here holds layers of content and reflects hours of refinement and care. Here we see creation of fantastic realities with specific virtuosity, exquisite scenes of our landscape and cities, and the respectful documentation of contemporary life. Congratulations foremost to our graduates, but also to our exceptional staff. I hope you enjoy this exhibition and its associated catalogue, as it presents the dynamic potential of photography both as a profession but also as a ongoing, significant contribution to cultural discourse. Professor DR. Martyn Hook Dean, School of Media & Communication RMIT University

Laura has been taking photographs for as long as she can remember; she was always picking up box disposable cameras or borrowing her mother’s old Canon. She is based in South East Melbourne, but has spent a lot of time photographing in remote Northern Victoria and Southern New South Wales. As a result, her work is heavily influenced by these wide-open spaces and her love for landscape and documentary

photography. Laura is very passionate about using her images to confront world issues. In her graduate body of work The Hand of Man, she captures and studies the way in which humans impact on the landscape, tackling issues such as climate change and global warming. However, Laura is also very engaged by architectural, fashion, still life and portrait photography.

Mollie’s interest in photography started at a young age when she came across one of her dad’s old cameras. From there, her passion for capturing life in a natural setting led to the idea of engaging the essence of who we are as human beings in her graduate project The People Series. This series consists of fifteen natural-light portraits of teenagers and young adults, each varying in age and nationality. These images aim to explore and challenge our preconceived ideas of those around us, demonstrating that our identities are not only skin-deep. Upon completing her diploma, Mollie plans to travel and explore the wider world and the people who inhabit it.

William Carr +61 424 590 749 williamcarr.photo@gmail.com

William (Will) hails from Melton, a growing city in country Victoria, where he was first introduced to the thrilling adventure of motorsports and 4WD, which became the catalyst for his love of capturing the extreme and continues to fuel his passion. Today, Will’s work is a culmination of years of perfecting lighting techniques under challenging conditions and

capturing the defining moment, always with a hint of action and back-story. His ability to bring out this excitement in his subjects separates his portraits from the masses and in the style of one of his idols, Joel Grimes, gets the visual adrenaline pumping.

Cameron is a photographer’s assistant and photographer living and working in Melbourne. Cameron grew up in a small country town and began working in a trade for the first five years of his working life, before moving to Melbourne to follow the passion of photography after a life-changing epiphany. Cameron is most excited by fashion photography; however, he holds a grand regard for fine art photographers and is incredibly inspired by photographers such as Gregory Crewdson and Alexia Sinclair.

Samuel (Sam) grew up in a small coastal town on the Great Ocean Road, an upbringing that established a robust curiosity for the natural environment and how we move within it. This has since evolved into a thirst to incite outdoor adventures and active lifestyles through photography, now a predominant part of his life. Sam is increasingly enjoying the process of creating images for a distinct

outcome. So far, he has been amazed by the people and places he has encountered at the hand of photography, and welcomes the challenge of a career as a professional photographer.

Sonja is a Melbourne-based photographer with a love of dance. Instead of attempting the moves herself, she prefers to be behind the camera capturing the incredible feats of the human body. One of the amazing things about dancing and performing is that race and gender is irrelevant. It all comes down to what the performers can push their bodies to do. Sonja believes that photographing these incredible athletes and freezing their almost impossible stunts is an honour. Upon completing her diploma, Sonja plans to work with dancers of all ages, photographing at the local dance schools, right through to their prestigious counterparts.

Emily’s interest in fashion and beauty photography began in her final year of high school. At 17, she picked up a camera, and began photographing her sister. This has transformed into an opportunity to shoot with stylists, make-up artists, fashion design students and modelling agencies in the great studio spaces at RMIT. Emily considers her work to be minimal, clean and delicate – a style that is enhanced by her use of muted colours and tones. She finds the eyes of her models are one of the most crucial things in her work, as it’s the expression of a person that draws you into an image. One of her favourite photographers, Paolo Roversi, once said “The eyes come first. They are the most expressive. Hands come second. The lips and the mouth are tied in third... I find that when there is emptiness, interior beauty emerges.” Emily will continue to build her portfolio, collaborating with the creative team she has formed this year. She will also continue to develop her skills by assisting other photographers.

Originally from regional NSW, Kris now finds inspiration in the streets and laneways of Melbourne. With a strong interest in design and composition, his images take on a very uniform and precise nature. Qualities like these have nurtured Kris’ interest in architectural, and landscape photography. In his folio these genres are used to explore the way artificial light influences the urban

environment. Kris has also found a strong interest in documentary photography, with an image from his series Coming Home selected as a semi-finalist in the 2014 Moran Photographic Prize. Upon completion of the diploma, Kris aims to further his knowledge through assisting and freelance work within the photographic industry.

David is an emerging fashion, architecture and events photographer, and also a certified photographer for the Google Business View program. He was born in Shanghai in 1972 and began photographing as an amateur in 2002. After a 16-year career, working as a professional in IT, David migrated to Australia to study at RMIT. The key concept of his final folio is fashion in the landscape. It combines charming fashion with a variety of beautiful scenes found in Melbourne. The folio is also a gift to his partner Cindy – the only model in the folio – to thank her for her great support of his photography study. David is keen to develop his photography further through more professional work and assisting – building and expanding his network, to become part of this fascinating industry.

Jean-Louis is a Melbourne-based photographer with a strong passion for black and white landscape photography. Born in 1990 Jean-Louis completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts before deciding to develop his photographic skills at RMIT in the Diploma of Photo Imaging. With a strong emphasis on the negative, Jean-Louis tries to encapsulate a motif of time, movement and stillness in his

images. With his camera in one hand and a remote shutter in the other, Jean-Louis attempts to push the ideals of the still image over a prolonged amount of time – capturing fleeting moments in his imagery.

Melissa Kulinski +61 411 497 881 melissa.ann.kulinski@gmail.com melissaannkulinski.com

/  45

Melissa was born in Melbourne, and after a lifelong interest in photography began tertiary study in 2013. Her foremost photographic interest at present is working with and manipulating studio lighting (live and digitally), to create a wide range of striking affects. Her final folio is an examination of the dichotomies and similarities between “presence” and “absence” – here and not here – with a series of traditional portraits juxtaposed with photographs of their subjects’

living spaces and interiors. Her working methods are relaxed but focused. Melissa enjoys engaging her subjects with questions, music and conversation to make them comfortable, and also to capture the unguarded, spontaneous moment. Her plan, upon completion of the Diploma of Photo Imaging is to find work assisting established photographers in the field and to continue developing her own artistic projects.

Bianca’s interest in photography started during high school where she first studied and fell in love with the darkroom. This interest became a passion, so she set out to continue learning as much as she could, further developing and refining her skills. As an aspiring fashion photographer, her main focus for this body of work was to create an uncomplicated and simplistic style of fashion, by eliminating negative space and concentrating on the structured and organic shapes created by the model. In the future, Bianca wants to travel and immerse herself in a documentary style of photography, whilst also nurturing her fascination with fashion and using the relationships created this year with make-up artists and designers to continue adding to her portfolio.

Paul has been fascinated by the art of story and its potency in influencing human endeavour ever since he could think. Childhood remembrances of creating a narrative for why the world was as it was still guide his thoughts to this day. Expressing the modern day mythos in visual terms today is still as challenging now as it was back then as a child. Paul sees no difference between fine art and commercial photography, given they all stem from very human drives and emotions. His current trajectory is finding and combining different ways to best articulate his client’s story in a rapidly changing modern context. To that end, RMIT has been crucial in extending Paul’s visual vocabulary through both its technical and research units, while also enabling him to develop a concrete relationship with industry.

Kate has a love for all things artistic. She began photography as a way of expressing her creativity, turning her vivid imagination into images. Her passion lies within the world of fashion photography, particularly fashion on location. Having grown up on the South Coast of Victoria, Kate believes her style has been heavily influenced by her upbringing. With an appreciation of nature, Kate has a desire to explore and capture the beautiful places that surround us. Her work aspires to create stories – connecting her subjects and surroundings – bringing their beauty to life. During her time at RMIT, Kate has had the opportunity to collaborate. This is another aspect of photography that Kate loves. She is looking forward to continuing to build these relationships and developing her folio, while assisting in the industry.

Jessica’s work holds strong ties to the fine art world of photography. Heavily influenced by the work of Stephen Shore and David Wadelton, her current project focuses on Melbourne’s Northern Suburbs. She is interested in documenting the subtle beauty found in the mundane, highlighting the eccentricities and overlooked spaces that make up this weird and wonderful part of the world. As a whole, these images have a personal feeling of love and gratitude for the places she has come across. Matthew’s (Matty) life with a camera began in the captivating landscape of New Zealand when he was fourteen. Living in Sydney’s Northern Beaches inspired him to turn his lens to the surf culture that surrounded him daily. Through connections and networking skills, he soon found himself working for one of the country’s largest aerial production companies. Matty is commissioned to shoot from helicopters and planes all over Australia and continues to do so today. Matty’s interest in automotive advertising grew after assisting some of Australia’s most prominent car photographers in the industry. Endorsed by Mazda for his final folio, Matty has produced a lifestyle advertising campaign featuring a selection of their latest models. The body of work has been heavily influenced by his experience and passion for the advertising and automotive design market. Matty’s next stop is New York City in late 2015.

Andrew is a Melbourne-based photographer and artist. His love for the camera began in high school in 1994. Since then, Andrew has exhibited works both locally and internationally throughout the USA and Europe. Inspired by film, music and personal experience, Andrew’s work takes two main directions: a darker, sometimes scary world of unseen nightmares, or a nostalgic playground of warm memories, much safer and happier than the former. Catherine (Cat) is an aspiring Melbournebased photographer with a passion for eclectic fashion and lifestyle shooting. Her business, C-PASH, established in early 2010 focused on documenting house parties, music festivals and a myriad of events that embodied youth culture. Today, Cat has developed into a much more refined photographer. Cat aims to break into the alternative fashion industry and collaborate with designers, stylists and bloggers alike. Cat’s dream is to travel to the USA from East to West Coast to meet people in the creative industry and work alongside them – to broaden her connections, experience and originality. “The mind loves the unknown...” is a small section of a quote by one of Kira’s favourite artists, René Magritte. Throughout her photographic journey Kira has discovered an admiration for surrealism. She finds it amazing that an alternate reality can be produced right at her fingertips. Kira believes it comes down to pulling an idea apart and revealing what the ordinary eye fails to see. Jack picked up a camera three years ago as a new challenge and as a way to tell the stories of those around him. His photography has a heavy cinematic style with a strong commercial backbone. The work tries to showcase those who don’t usually get the spotlight shone upon them, but whose efforts and talents deserve to be recognised. For his final folio he has decided to showcase the hardworking men and women of the very unique and renowned Melbourne bar scene, shooting people who have dedicated themselves to some of the best bars in the world out of love and passion. Wanting to shoot the portraits in a highly stylised manner, in the same way that celebrities are captured and showcased, is the visual goal of this project – not allowing this style of photography to be relegated to just those who the mainstream media decide to be deserving.

Adrian (AJ) is a ten-year veteran in the hair-styling industry that discovered his path in the field of photography only two years ago. His bold and theatrical images stem from an early love of comic books and surrealism. Through his unique imagination, AJ’s body of work is comprised of composites based on mythological deities, capturing their story through photographic portraits in their environments. His style sits on the border of fine art with strong illustrative influences while still hinting towards commercial photography. AJ’s desire for creating and exploring his newly found medium has inspired him to continue his practice in both photography and digital compositing for the future.

Studying at RMIT, Olga new that she would be a pet photographer with the main direction being horses and portraits of people with their beloved pets. Olga believes that a good photograph can capture all the love and friendship between humans and their pets.

James finds great enjoyment in photography and imaging. Images have always fascinated him, his curiosity stems not only from the technical aspects of production but also the theories and history that frame photography and image-making. This interest pushes him to return to the same buildings so he can see them in different light. It also motivates him to watch the extra couple of Photoshop tutorials, knowing that his composited images can illustrate new ideas. It drives him and makes him happy. James plans to continue to seek out like-minded people he can assist and learn from. Whether they are into illustrative compositing and retouching, portraiture, architecture, or even simply storytelling. James hopes to learn and refine his skills by working with passionate, creative people.

Rex’s fascination for photography comes from a love of problem solving. He enjoys working with complicated lighting set-ups, to create impossible images – from high-speed explosions created by passing bullets, to intricate glassware and composite images. Commercial advertising is where Rex’s passion lies. Rex enjoys executing projects that are technically brilliant and logistically challenging to capture. Retouching challenges are just as much a passion for Rex, who won’t stop until an image is perfect. Rex aims to continue to work as a photographer’s assistant over the coming years, while also developing his own commercial jobs – building a business and portfolio. He hopes to eventually establish a high-end commercial photography studio.

Since childhood, Christian (Chris) was always fascinated by how a powerful photograph can make us stop, think and feel emotions about matters that we would otherwise never think about. He strives to make use of the photographic medium as a way of communicating with us about challenging subject matter he considers important for the viewer of his work to think about. Sometimes he is a storyteller, sometimes a whistle blower and sometimes just a messenger. While Chris has a range of photographic skills, he is drawn to photojournalism and documentary photography. For his final folio, Chris has produced a series about homelessness in Melbourne. Working closely with his subjects, this work illustrates the daily challenges of living on the streets, while reinforcing the relevance of people that are so often overlooked by society.

New York Minute Study Tour In April of 2014, I was selected to be the documentary photographer of an RMIT study tour in the United States.

me the opportunity to behave like an insider and afforded me a privileged, private point-of-view.

Running for two weeks in June, this project followed 24 students from the Masters in Communication Design, who travelled to New York City to complete their professional practice subject.

Spending two weeks with this team – eating breakfast, lunch and dinner together; walking together; getting lost together; learning how to cope in an unfamiliar environment together; meeting new people together; discovering different places together – allowed me to witness how each one of these events contributed to the development of the narrative, how the subjects faced their struggles, and how I overcame my own, until I was able to find the story behind the big picture.

Being able to actually live with your subjects is the ideal situation for a documentary photographer. It is an indulgence that grants 24/7 access and allows you to immerse yourself in the story as it is being built. This project portrays the everyday lives and experiences of the students, with an intimate and non-coercive approach, letting moments flow naturally. It granted

2014 Shanghai Photo Imaging Study Tour Monday 15 September – Friday 25 September Funded by the School of Media and Communication, Outbound Mobility and individually by the students. The 2014 Shanghai Photo Imaging study tour was held from September 15 to 26. The tour was designed to provide RMIT Vocational Education (VE) students with an opportunity to demonstrate skills and knowledge to work in an international workplace environment. This international collaboration allowed students to work collaboratively, creatively and crossculturally with students from the East China Normal University (ECNU) and Limelight Studio, a full-service commercial photography and video studio in Shanghai.

Š John Wright

East China Normal University, Shanghai The participants undertook a collaborative project with the nineteen Brand Design and Management students from ECNU on a series of eight posters that evoke the history of food brands in Shanghai and the changes and development they have undergone, as well as their longevity in the market place. In addition to the posters, the RMIT participants produced an additional sixty-four images that explored the new and old Shanghai. RMIT and ECNU students visited old brand companies and collected information and images of their old and new products. They were immersed in Shanghai culture through visiting places generally inaccessible to tourists.

The result was an exhibition of these works at the 8th Annual China Time Honoured Brand and Famous Brand Expo at the Shanghai World Exhibition Centre from September 26 to 30. An exhibition of these works was shown at the RMIT University Design Hub from October 9 to 16.

Limelight Studios, Shanghai The students worked on a project brief set by Limelight Studio’s Executive Director, Scott Wright, exploring the juxtaposition between old and new Shanghai with a technical focus on the use of multiple exposure. They each produced a single page, double page spread and billboard using images they had captured both in the city and the rural landscape.

RMIT Art in Public Space The third task was a documentation project of the Skypetrait project, which the Masters of Art – Public Space participated in with Public Art students from ECNU. Their involvement resulted in a series of photographs and video that captured the act and essence of the project. Their final images and footage will be displayed in Shanghai in 2015 and at Skypetrait at Staedtische Galerie in Germany in 2016. The tour placed students in a challenging cultural situation where they successfully overcame language and aesthetic barriers in order to produce outstanding work. This is the second year that the study tour project has taken place with a tour planned for 2015.

Photo Imaging VE (Vocational Education) 2013–2014 Graduate in Residence Program The RMIT Photo Imaging VE (Vocational Education) Graduate in Residence is an annual program that provides a 12-month residency to graduates of either the Applied Photography or Photo Imaging Diploma programs. Launched in 2013, it accepts proposals from graduates from all areas of photography. A panel of industry professionals judges the proposals, assessing the quality of the concepts and the value of each project, in terms of the learning and teaching that they will bring into the Photo Imaging courses. The selected graduates gain access to RMIT’s equipment and facilities used in the current Photo Imaging program to complete their proposed

projects. They also receive mentoring from within the department and an appropriate practitioner from the photographic industry. At the conclusion of the residency, the graduates receive sponsorship from our industry partners for an exhibition of their work. Promoted widely throughout the photographic industry and the university, this exhibition offers the chance to celebrate the success of this program and the work of the recipients. Awarded graduates give back to the Photo Imaging program through the provision of lectures and demonstrations of their work to the current students. These are delivered within the appropriate subjects of the Photo Imaging courses to the current student cohort.

Photo Imaging VE (Vocational Education) 2013–2014 Graduate in Residence Program Janelle Low “What’s your background?” “Why does it matter?” “Nah, come on, what’s your background?” “I’m Australian. I was born here.” “But where are your parents from?” “Why does it matter?” “Come on, what’s your background? “You Japanese? You Korean? “You eat sushi?” Blonde-Haired Blue-Eyed Nothing is an exploration of my own and others’ experiences growing up in multicultural Australia. Through a series of environmental portraits and staged still-lifes I aim to address some of the unresolved conflicts, both internal and external, that each individual undergoes growing up in the diverse and evolving cultural landscape of Australia.

Blonde-Haired Blue-Eyed Nothing is ultimately an exploration of identity and a question of acceptance. What does it take for us not just as Australians, but as human beings, to accept ourselves as we are, and give that same acceptance to others around us?

Artist Bio Janelle Low won the 2013 National Photographic Portrait Prize at the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra. She graduated in 2010 with a Diploma of Photo Imaging, RMIT and was a finalist in the Head On Photo Festival Portrait Prize at the State Library of NSW. Rio Arianto My principal objective with the making of these images is to create a series of consumer products for commercial advertising purposes. The style and the concepts are inspired and influenced by the surrealist art movement. My purpose is to give the viewer a surreal impression of the subjects by making inanimate objects seem alive. Image manipulation through file stitching, scale distortion and image compositing has been used to produce this contemporary body of work. The intention is to offer the viewer a tangible impression of a dream-like reality. I do this by giving an imaginative depiction of how the products would look if they existed in the real world and were life-size in scale. I intend to use this work as the basis to further explore the

possibilities of photographic compositing, creating advertising imagery that excites and attracts. I want to continue to produce work that is not only innovative and surreal in appearance, but also contemporary in style.

Artist Bio Rio Arianto graduated from the RMIT Photo Imaging Diploma in 2012. He is currently in his third and final year at RMIT BA. After graduating, Rio plans to start his career in Bali, Indonesia, working part-time in the family printing company and focusing on developing his career as an advertising and commercial photographer. eyevoir.com

Graduate Profiles Lucy Aulich (Graduated 2006) Next month I will be travelling to Bangladesh to cover food and nutrition alongside child empowerment programs for the 40 Hour Famine. RMIT provided me with the tools and technical knowledge base to find a job that continues to challenge and inspire me. For the past two years I’ve been working for World Vision Australia photographing their relief and development work. No two days are the same. My work has included coverage of maternal child health in Rwanda, Malawi and Senegal; psychosocial rehabilitation in Sri Lanka and agricultural cooperatives and land rights in Cambodia. After graduating in 2006, my first years were spent learning the ropes at the Leader and Fairfax community newspapers shooting football, cricket, weddings anniversaries, politicians and the colourful characters that make community news.

RMIT gave me the confidence to take my hobby of photography and turn it into a career. The access to darkrooms, studios and teachers who had industry experience was invaluable. I was able to make a group of friends that I continue to seek out for advice and share a dogged determination with. This program provides the best starting point for any photographer, equipping you with both life skills and industry experience. lucyaulichphotography.com

Graduate Profiles

Kerry Pryor (Graduated 2008) I started the Applied Photography course at RMIT TAFE in 2005 studying part-time to test the waters and see if it really was what I wanted to do. In 2006 I transferred to the full-time course and have not looked back. My time at RMIT set me up for a career in the photography industry. Supportive lecturers were a fantastic sounding board and helped set me up with contacts within the industry. On occasion, I still have the voice of lecturers popping into my head directing and instructing me as I work on a job.

After graduating in 2008, I started my own freelance photography business. I had a small number of clients and assisted photographers along with part-time work placement in the industry. Meanwhile I have steadily grown my own business working for a variety of clients photographing for annual reports, portraits, products and events. In 2010 I made my first trip to Africa and have returned regularly documenting the work of charitable foundations. kerrypryor.com.au

Jacob McFadden (Graduated, 2010) Jacob McFadden Graduated in 2010 from RMIT with a Diploma in Photo Imaging. During his time at RMIT, Jacob took full advantage of the high quality of expertise on hand from the lecturers, as well as the professional facilities and equipment. He found the most valuable asset of the course was its connections within the industry. During his time there he gained a huge network of contacts, allowing him to start assisting whilst studying and also gaining shooting jobs passed on through the course. After graduating, Jacob assisted for a few years, primarily fashion photographers based in Melbourne and out of Sydney, as well as shooting for a number of different labels and editorials on a regular basis. Jacob made the move to London mid

2013 where he has had the opportunity to work with some of the world’s most influential photographers, such as Annie Leibovitz, Peter Lindbergh, and Karim Sadli. He currently resides in East London where he assists and shoots in fashion for a number of different English and Australian publications. Some of Jacob’s closest friends, people he still catches up with and keeps in regular contact with, were made during his time at RMIT. jacobmcfadden.com.au

Graduate Profiles

Ryo Yamauchi (Graduated 2010) The RMIT Photo Imaging program guided me to form strong work ethics both as an artist and a business person. I believe the staff did their best to pass down the philosophy behind their photography skills. Since graduating in 2010 I have travelled extensively in the sub-polar regions pursuing my love for landscape photography in the fine art industry, exhibiting internationally along the way. After spending many nights in the remote wilderness I came to believe

in the benefits of nurturing one’s personal connection with nature. My aim in photography is to explore how we as humans embrace and relate to our surrounding environments. From 2015, as a recipient in an artist-in-residence program at Salamanca Arts Centre, I will be developing a body of work around the Tasmanian landscape. ryoyamauchi.com

/  107

Jessie DiBlasi (Graduated 2011) Since graduating from the Diploma of Photo Imaging in 2011, I have balanced my time between sessional teaching at RMIT (VE) and collaborating with my sister to self-publish our first book – a documentary cookbook titled Nonna to Nana. In April this year we launched the book and have since enjoyed a number of events and exhibitions around Australia. As a student, Nonna to Nana was the basis of my final folio. I was proud to present the beginnings of this project I had hoped to continue as a graduate. Almost three years on, now as a graduate and teacher, it forms an important part of my teaching and it has been incredibly rewarding to share the experience and knowledge with my students.

This year (along with Janelle Low), I was recognised for teaching and contribution to the iBelong Photographic Taster program with an RMIT Teaching Award (Commendation). In 2015, I will continue teaching while working on a number of local and international photographic projects. nonnatonana.com jessiediblasi.com
