Type 617 & 618

Introduction Scope of Manual This manual provides installation, adjustment, maintenance procedures, and part ordering information for the Type 617 and 618 ball float actuators (see figure 1). Information for the valves and other accessories is found in separate instruction manuals. Only personnel qualified through training or experience should install, operate, and maintain this actuator. If there are any questions concerning these instructions, contact your Fisher sales office or sales representative before proceeding.

Description Type 617 and 618 ball float actuators are used with sliding stem valves having 2-1/8 and 2-13/16 inch (54 and 71 mm) yoke boss diameters. The actuator is used to control the level of liquids by regulating flow to or from open tanks, reservoirs, or other liquid containers. The Type 618 actuator is of a heavier construction than the Type 617 actuator, and it offers a greater variety of valve stem travel adjustments for use on larger valve sizes. Both the Type 617 and 618 actuators can operate either as a first-class lever, in which the valve stem moves down with rising level, or as a second-class lever, in which the valve stem rises with rising level (see figure 2).

Specifications Refer to table 1 for the Type 617 and 618 ball float actuators specifications.

Installation D Valve/Actuator Assembly: If the actuator and valve are shipped together as a control valve assembly, it is adjusted at the factory. Some minor re-adjustment may be necessary before placing the valve in service. Install the actuator in the vertical position for proper performance. The actuator is used with globe or angle valves. Refer to the valve installation procedures in the valve instruction manual to install the valve in the pipeline. D Actuator Mounting: If the actuator is shipped separately or the actuator has been removed from the valve, it is necessary to mount the actuator on the valve. Refer to the actuator mounting procedures below. Key number locations are shown in figures 3 and 4 unless otherwise indicated.

2

1. Remove the yoke locknut from the valve yoke boss. 2. Install the actuator yoke (key 1) onto the valve yoke boss. 3. Replace the yoke boss locknut onto the valve yoke boss, and tighten the locknut. 4. Install the actuator in the vertical position for proper performance (see figure 1). Install the stem connector, and refer to the following Adjustment section.

Adjustments The actuator adjustment procedures provide steps for either raising or lowering liquid level control. Weights are furnished for both the Type 617 and Type 618 actuator when used with 2-13/16 inch (71 mm) yoke boss. These weights provide a means for counterbalancing the weight of the lever arm to obtain a half-submerged float position. This float position is recommended because it causes a maximum force change on the valve stem for a minimum liquid level change.

Liquid Level Adjustment The controlled liquid level is varied by changing the angle of the float rod with respect to the lever. Loosen the two nuts holding the lever segment in place. Rotate the lever segment outward, away from the valve, or inward to change to the desired angle. Tighten the two nuts to clamp the lever segment in the desired position. The change in the angle adjusts the liquid level. Similar adjustments are used for either a first- or second-class lever arrangement. The actuator can be rotated on the valve yoke boss to any desired angle in the horizontal plane as long as the float rod assembly has free movement. Loosen the yoke locknut on the head assembly and rotate the actuator to the desired position and tighten the locknut.

Increasing Valve Travel Adjustment with Type 618 Actuator Key numbers are shown in figure 4 unless otherwise directed. The Type 618 actuator, when used with 2- through 6-inch valves has an adjustment lever link (key 20) so that the greater valve travels required for the larger valve sizes can be obtained without adversely affecting the desired control level limits of the application. For increased valve travel, position the lever link a greater distance from the valve stem as follows:

Type 617 & 618 Table 1. Specifications Operating Principle First-Class Lever: Valve stem moves down with rising level (see figure 2) Second-Class Lever: Valve stem moves up with rising level (see figure 2) Yoke Boss Diameter and Valve Plug Stem Force See table 2 Float Buoyancy See table 3

Figure 2. First- and Second-Class Lever Arrangements

1. Remove the lever arm (key 12) at the valve stem connection (key 6). 2. Remove the lever link at the yoke (key 8). 3. Install the lever link in the desired hole in the yoke, and in an outward direction from the lever stem. 4. Install the lever arm on the valve stem connection by using the appropriate hole in the lever arm.

Maintenance Actuator parts are subject to normal wear and must be inspected and replaced when necessary. The frequency of inspection and replacement depends on the severity of service conditions. Because of the care Fisher Controls takes in meeting all manufacturing requirements (such as heat treating and dimensional tolerances), use only replacement parts manufactured or furnished by Fisher Controls.

WARNING The float is a sealed container and, if penetrated by the process media, it may retain pressure or hazardous fluid for an extended period. Such a float may contain pressure as a result of being in a pressurized vessel. It may contain fluid that becomes pressurized due to changes in temperature. Or, it may contain process media that is hazardous or flammable. Sudden release of pressure, contact with hazardous fluid, fire, or explosion, can result in personal injury or property damage. The above conditions can occur if a float retaining pressure or process media is punctured, subjected to heat, or repaired. Be careful when removing, storing, handling, or disposing of a float that could be retaining some of the process media. Before performing any maintenance operations: D Be sure the actuator cannot suddenly open or close the valve.

4

BUOYANT FORCE WITH FLOAT HALF-SUBMERGED IN WATER Lbf N

D Use bypass valves or completely shut off the process to isolate the valve from process pressure. Relieve process pressure from both sides of the valve. Drain the process media from both sides of the valve. D Use lock-out procedures to be sure that the above measures stay in effect while you work on the equipment.

Replacing the Float Key number locations are shown in figures 3 and 4 unless otherwise directed. 1. Isolate the control valve from the line pressure, release pressure from both sides of the valve body, and drain the process media from both sides of the valve. Use lock-out procedures to be sure that the above measures stay in effect while you work on the equipment. 2. Remove the hex nut (key 21 or key 14, Type 617 or Type 618) and cap screws (key 20, or key 15).

Type 617 & 618 3. Be careful when removing, and handling the float, (read the Warning above). Remove the float and rod assembly from the lever (key 9 or key 12, see figures 3 and 4).

Parts List

4. Unscrew the float (key 16 or 19) from the float rod (key 15 or key 18).

Key

Type 617 Ball Float Actuator 1

5. Install the replacement float on the float rod. 6. Replace the rod, with the float attached, by re-inserting the cap screws through the lever (key 9 or key 12), and replace the nuts. Refer to the float Adjustment procedures.

Reversing Float Action Figure 2 shows the lever arrangement for first-class and second class lever arrangements. For first-class levers, the fulcrum is located between the valve stem connection and the float rod assembly. For second-class levers, the fulcrum is located outside the distance between the valve stem connection and the float rod assembly Key number locations are shown in figures 3 and 4 unless otherwise indicated. To change an existing float action from a first-class to a second-class lever, or vice versa, perform the following steps: 1. Remove the lever arm (key 9 or key 12, figures 3 or 4) from the actuator by removing the E-rings (key 5) and the lever pin (key 6).

2

3

4

5

6

7

2. Loosen the yoke locknut on the valve yoke boss. 3. Rotate the yoke (key 1) 180 degrees on the valve bonnet. 8

4. Re-tighten the yoke locknut. 5. Re-connect the lever arm to the actuator in a manner consistent with the float action desired (see figure 2). 9

Parts Ordering Each actuator has a serial number stamped on the nameplate. Always mention this number when corresponding with the Fisher sales office or sales representative regarding technical information or replacement parts. Also, reference the complete 11-character part number of each needed part as found in the following Parts List sections.
