From clone to joint: How cannabis goes from plant to pot

Growing and harvesting cannabis can be a long and daunting task, and enjoyers of the plant may be unaware of the thought and care that often goes into cultivating it.

Organic Alternatives, a dispensary located in Fort Collins, grows and processes their cannabis locally, said Maka Kala’i, director of sales and marketing at Organic Alternatives.

“Everything is grown here in Fort Collins, and then it is harvested, trimmed and cured to perfection before it is packaged and sent to the dispensary to be sold,” Kala’i said.

Kala’i said the dispensary uses only organic ingredients and growing methods, and growing the plant inhouse allows them to have ultimate control over the final product, compared to purchasing and reselling from a third party.

The cannabis at Organic Alternatives is cultivated in soil, though Kala’i said other dispensaries might use cannabis that has been cultivated in water or other nutrients.

However, Kala’i said Organic Alternatives, along with many others, believe the best product is grown in soil.

To start the process, Kala’i said the

dispensary uses a cloning method to produce new plants to grow.

Jeremiah Lucas, director of cultivation at Organic Alternatives, said they clone rather than plant seeds to make sure they use only female plants to grow flour. Female plants, Lucas said, produce better buds for people to smoke.

“You have your vegetative plant and it has a branch,” Lucas said. “And you take a cut of that branch, and you put that branch in a rooting hormone in a clone dome, and in that clone dome, that plant will start growing roots over a period of six to 14 days.”

Once the plant sets its roots, the cultivators take the plant and put it into the soil. This produces a cutting, or a clone, of the plant, and the process begins again for the next batch of cannabis.

“You can keep that plant in a vegetative state indefinitely with a life cycle and environmental conditions,” Lucas said. “And you can keep taking clones off of that plant to continue the production cycle.”

Once the plants are cloned and rooted, they get placed in vegetation rooms so they can begin to grow, Kala’i said. When it reaches the right size, they are then put into “flowering rooms.”

“They’re building up their size in a

vegetative state, and then when they get put into the flowering stage, they then start to produce the buds,” Kala’i said.

The plants are left to grow for eight to 10 weeks, according to Lucas.

Once the buds are ready to be harvested, they are trimmed and hung to cure. After five to seven days, when the nuggets are properly cured, they are ready to go into the packaging process.

Lucas said it depends on genetics and conditions, but each plant can harvest anywhere from a quarter pound to a pound of cannabis per plant.

Most dispensaries, including Organic Alternatives, package the plants in grams and into eighths (of an ounce). Kala’i said Organic Alternatives also packages their cannabis into “smalls,” which are eighths but are slightly smaller buds.

“We also produce all of our own pre-rolls, or joints or blunts, as well as concentrate extracts like wax and shatter and live resin,” Kala’i said. “So the trim and smaller buds from the cured product will go to also make some of the hash products that we produce or concentrates.”

To make concentrates, Kala’i said, some whole cannabis plants will get flash frozen to produce a live

resin, which is a higher-end type of concentrate.

“It requires a lot of high-tech machinery extraction equipment,” Kala’i said. “I still hear stories from the Fort Collins Police (Services) about where people are extracting their own products that they grow at home. They’re using propane, butane cans and tubes to make their own concentrates, and it’s a very volatile process; (with) a spark in the room, people can cause fires or explosions.”

Organic Alternatives allows customers to enjoy products that use concentrates, such as edibles, without danger of fires or explosions.

For those interested in purchasing cannabis, Kala’i said customers are allowed to buy one ounce of cannabis at a time. This goes for any dispensary in Colorado, not just for Organic Alternatives.

From start to finish, from the cloning until harvesting and packaging, it takes about five months, Lucas said. Organic Alternatives harvests their plants once a week on a 90-day rotation, so something gets done every day, whether it is harvesting, trimming or transplanting.

Kala’i said the entire process is also on camera for legal reasons, as the state needs to monitor how much cannabis is being produced and sold to buyers

in Colorado. Each plant is also tagged and monitored throughout the entire process.

“So the possibilities of pocketing something and trying to walk home with it is very low,” Kala’i said.

The state also monitors the amount of cannabis one facility produces and limits the number of plants each facility can cultivate in a tier-based system, Kala’i said.

“We are in one of the higher tiers,” Kala’i said. “But I think there’s even more above us for someone to produce in a large corporation.”

Organic Alternatives, Lucas said, is fairly big for a Fort Collins facility but still doesn’t produce as much as larger operations in Denver. In total, the dispensary houses around 3,600 plants. Bigger growing centers can house up to 10,000 plants, Lucas said.

“We have the one dispensary,” Lucas said. “All (of our plants) supply just Organic Alternatives. You have some cultivation facilities that supply their chains of 17 stores, so then you start looking at 100,000 square foot operations that are supplying all of their stores. And then you have some cultivation facilities that don’t supply any store, and they just wholesale to everybody in the market.”

Panacea-CSU partnership furthers CBD research

One year ago, Colorado State University alumna, founder and CEO of Panacea Life Sciences, Leslie Buttorff, gifted $1.5 million to the University for the creation of a cannabinoid research center.

“I had the opportunity to present our gifting proposal to Janice Nerger, and we came up with the idea of creating the Panacea Life lab in the Chemistry Research Building,” Buttorff wrote in an email to The Collegian.

“We’ve always aimed to be a disruptor of Big Pharma, so it’s important to us that we continue to innovate new products and new pathways to give people a natural alternative to synthetics and pharmaceuticals,” Buttorff wrote. “Hemp has been misunderstood for far too long, and we’re excited to help people find out what a game changer it can be for their overall health and wellness.”

Cannabinoids are a class of molecules originating in cannabis hemp plants that lend to cannabis’ potential as a pharmaceutical treatment, especially for pain and seizures. Buttorff wrote, “CBD is short for cannabidiol, which is one of the most common of over 120 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant.”

According to the Food and Drug Administration, Epidiolex, a treatment for two rare forms of epilepsy,

was the first FDA-approved drug to have CBD. CBD is the active ingredient of one of PLS’s products, Cannabidiol Oral Solution, and is just one example of a cannabinoid with research supported at CSU, according to Panacea’s website.

“The hemp plant is known to have over 120 different cannabinoids in a single plant, with CBD and THC being the most well-known,” Buttorff wrote. “There is a lot of research left to do on the remaining list.”

“There are many testimonials, supporting studies and literature that show the positive effects CBD has on your health, most commonly in how it helps safely manage chronic pain, lower stress and anxiety, aids in sleep to relieve insomnia and decreases inflammation,” Buttorff wrote.

This molecule’s applications are being expanded to traumatic brain injury and PTSD treatment, according to the Panacea article.

According to their website, Panacea specializes in the development of therapeutic products containing non-psychoactive cannabinoid molecules. These molecules do not cause a “high,” in contrast with THC, which is responsible for the “heightened” sense of euphoria and perception felt by marijuana users, according to Healthline.

The gift to CSU supports cannabinoid research in a variety of aspects.

researching cannabidiol’s relationship with other molecules, wrote in an email to The Collegian, “The center is a state-of-the-art analytical facility, providing CSU students and faculty access to cutting edge research tools for investigating cannabinoid-related questions.”

The research being conducted at the center is primarily on the chemistry of hemp and cannabinoids — not marijuana as a psychoactive drug.

“Cannabinoids are being used broadly in the market in a fraudulent manner by misrepresenting concentrations of the cannabinoid present as well as product quality,” said Melissa Reynolds, College of Natural Sciences associate dean of research. “Products have been reported to contain toxins, pesticides and other undesirable ingredients. The cannabinoid research center will use state-of-theart instrumentation that will position CSU to make key discoveries in cannabinoid research that will lead to new and safer uses.”

Cuchiaro wrote that he hopes one of the outcomes of the partnership will be increasing public awareness of the potential therapeutic benefits of non-psychoactive cannabinoids.

“Public perception is always in flux, but the work happening at CSU can promote greater understanding and support of this emerging field,” he wrote.

This collaboration between CSU and Panacea aims to address inconsistencies in CBD testing processes,

Buttorff wrote.

Safety of consumers is a top priority, Buttorff wrote. CSU’s research will help to iron out some of the inconsistencies in the hemp chain.

“For example, one hemp grower delivered us hemp that contained pesticides,” Buttorff wrote. “This hemp is unusable and thus this grower lost a lot of money. One of the projects that Panacea and CSU will work on is how to cost effectively remove the pesticides so this hemp can be used.”

Cannabinoids can be applied to a variety of therapeutic contexts, which is the second aspect of Panacea’s research relationship with CSU. Cuchiaro’s research in analytical chemistry specializes in separating and analyzing cannabinoids and other therapeutic molecules as well as improving the materials used to perform those separations.

“We will be looking at separation techniques for different cannabinoids, and we’ll be looking at all different types of strains of the hemp plant to see how to separate out the THC,” Buttorff wrote.

Panacea will also look at other molecules in order to create new products with a variety of applications, Buttorff wrote.

“The purpose of the lab is to advance the research being completed in the hemp/cannabinoid areas,” Buttorff wrote. “CSU benefits from the world class lab we have created that will focus on cannabinoid test-

ing and separation.

This testing and separation is what Cuchiaro’s research focuses on, but there is plenty of room for growth on the subject.

“One of the benefits of the center being housed under the College of Natural Sciences umbrella is that the analytical tools are available to collaborators across the academic spectrum – whether they be chemists, psychologists, biologists or plant scientists,” Cuchiaro wrote.

According to Panacea, the research center will serve as a foundation for the study of cannabinoids to grow into several fields, including plant genetics, agronomy, molecular mechanisms and human and animal clinical trials. They have also initiated clinical trials investigating the use of therapeutic CBD in dogs and horses.

CSU’s relationship with Panacea has allowed the University to become a leader in cannabinoid research, as it provides a suite of research opportunities for faculty and students, Reynolds wrote.

“We believe that hemp provides CSU a unique opportunity as a land-grant university to be a national leader in integrating research, engagement and learning across the entire hemp value chain – from genetics and varietal development to psychological and consumer research,” Reynolds wrote.

A recent study published by Colorado State University researchers shows that the booming nationwide marijuana industry comes with a sizable carbon footprint. As global temperatures continue to rise, Colorado lawmakers and growers should consider ways to make this industry sustainable while keeping it economically viable.

In states where recreational marijuana is legal, sales and use of the plant have grown in recent years. That growth has been particularly dramatic in Colorado, where monthly recreational sales went from “between $10 million and $20 million in early 2012” to about $90 million in 2018, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.

“American agriculture has historically sought to increase its production while neglecting to consider the environmental consequences of that production.”

But this spike in demand for cannabis puts a large amount of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. The CSU study, which looked at cannabis operations across the country, says that these emissions are “largely attributed to electricity production and natural gas consumption from indoor environmental controls, high-intensity grow lights and the supply of carbon dioxide for accelerated plant growth.”

The researchers also developed an interactive map that shows how GHG emissions from indoor cannabis operations are distributed across the country. The map shows that emissions in Colorado are noticeably higher than in other marijuana-legal states such as

California and Washington.

Colorado still generates a good chunk of its electricity by using climate warming energy sources like coal and natural gas. Washington, on the other hand, uses far less coal and natural gas, instead deriving a large portion of its power from renewable sources like hydroelectricity.

According to SOURCE, emissions are higher in Colorado partly because “many grow operations are required to be in close proximity to retail storefronts, and this has caused an explosion of energy-hungry indoor warehouses in urban areas like Denver.”

The cannabis industry is relatively new, but it shares important similarities with other agricultural operations in the United States.

“In the past, changing farming practices focused on increasing yield to meet growing demands,” the American Society of Agronomy’s website states.

“But some of these practices have also had negative environmental impacts,” such as soil degradation and, like cannabis, elevated GHG emissions.

American agriculture has historically sought to increase its production while neglecting to consider the environmental consequences of that production.

Marijuana, unfortunately, seems to fit that pattern.

This country has only barely developed a mindset that prioritizes environmental health. Instead, we seek economic opportunities and, when they prove profitable, we maximize them. Supply and demand seems to dictate our policies until the moment we realize that our capitalist ambitions have limits in the real world.

Unsustainable practices, however, aren’t the only practices.

Some American farmers are implementing environmentally sustainable practices, and the emerging cannabis industry should do the same.

Evan Sproul was a member of the research team publishing “The greenhouse gas emissions of indoor cannabis production in the United States,” the CSU research paper on cannabis sustainability.

“We would like to try and improve environmental impacts before they have become built into the way of doing business,” he told SOURCE. The study mentions an area of improvement specific to Colorado. The requirement that grow operations must happen close to retail locations could be changed so that plants could be grown in areas where less energy is needed.

“The practice of growing cannabis in Leadville leads to 19% more GHG emissions than in Pueblo,” the study states. “The savings in GHG emissions from moving indoor cultivation to Pueblo and away from Leadville are likely to be much greater than the GHG emissions of transporting the final product to retail locations in Leadville.”

Colorado could also follow

Washington’s example and amp up its renewable energy generation (no pun intended). The Colorado Energy Office website says, “The state is working to transition to 100% clean electricity generation by 2040.”

Using electricity that doesn’t pump GHG emissions into the atmosphere could allow the cannabis industry to continue meeting the high demand for marijuana while not contributing to the ongoing climate crisis.

Overall, marijuana use doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Nationwide legalization could very well happen within CSU students’ lifetime, and that could mean an even higher demand for the plant.

To accommodate this, the industry should adjust its methods of production to ensure it can meet a growing demand sustainably.

Baby boomers and millennials agree on one thing: weed

The marijuana industry in the United States is experiencing an extraordinary period of growth.

In the U.S. in 2018, the legal marijuana industry was worth $10.4 billion, said Beau Whitney, vice president and senior economist at New Frontier Data — which specializes in examining data for the global cannabis industry — in an interview with the Associated Press.

Investors are learning more about the marijuana industry, and nearly two-thirds of U.S. states have legalized medical marijuana in some way or another. The industry is booming, and that growth is not showing signs of slowing anytime soon.

As the industry grows, it’s important to recognize the generational differences in how people view marijuana, both medically and recreationally, and the shift in tolerance that is occurring across the nation.

Millennials are crucial in the shift that normalizes use of both medical and recreational marijuana. The influx of new information about marijuana’s effects and uses

has led older generations, like baby boomers, made up of people born between 1946 and 1964, to become more progressive with their views, slowly untangling the racist ideology associated with the plant.

After the United States repealed Prohibition in the mid 1930s, states started regulating marijuana, and the Marihuana Tax Act passed in 1937. This act was essentially the United States’ first step in criminalizing marijuana across the nation and was largely tied to racism against Black and Mexican communities, who used marijuana more frequently during that time.

At the time, marijuana was falsely linked to rising crime rates and violence, and fears about the drug swept the country.

The boomer generation grew up surrounded by anti-marijuana propaganda as well as the war on drugs in the 1970s, meaning uncertainty about the effects of the drug followed them through their lives.

Now, boomers are more likely to use marijuana for only medicinal purposes, helping relieve chronic pain and arthritis, and millennials report using it recreationally as well as medically.

This shift in tolerance is likely due to the change in the way marijuana is discussed.

Boomers were born into a U.S. that was largely intolerant of marijuana and lived through the surge in popularity that occurred in the

1960s and ‘70s.

As the country moves to decriminalize marijuana, a shift in attitudes is ever-present among boomers.

“With rising accessibility and technological advancements throughout the industry, marijuana is becoming normalized and accepted across all age groups.”

Decriminalization and legalization increases the overall availability of marijuana along with more accessible information about its effects and uses. As older people get prescriptions for marijuana to help them with chronic pain, it may further the trust they have

in the positive aspects of cannabis use.

Millennials — people born between 1981 and 1996 — and Generation Z did not grow up with the same societal stigmas that boomers had about marijuana.

By the time the youngest millennials were born, California already legalized medical marijuana.

Smoking flower — the plant itself — still remains the most common way of consuming marijuana but is declining due to the popularization of cannabis vape products.

With rising accessibility and technological advancements throughout the industry, marijuana is becoming normalized and accepted across all age groups.

The global cannabis industry is expected to reach “97.35 billion (dollars) by the end of 2026,” according to Fortune Business Insights.

Millennials are pioneers in legalizing recreational marijuana.

According to a Pew Research Center study, 78% of millennial democrats believe marijuana should be fully legalized. 71% of millennial republicans also support this.

Another important motive that millennials have for fully legalizing marijuana is the broader social impact that it will bring.

According to the American Civil Liberties Union, despite

Black and white communities using recreational cannabis at similar rates, Black people are 3.64 times more likely to be arrested for possession of marijuana. Laws that were born out of racism continue to target and impact people of color and their communities.

According to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, “Despite making up close to 5% of the global population, the U.S. has nearly 25% of the world’s prison population.” African Americans have an incarceration rate of a little over five times more than their white counterparts.

As the marijuana industry booms, the baby boomer generation and millennials have more in common than they think, and they possess the unique ability to present different views on the effects and uses of marijuana both medicinally and recreationally.

Although they have different motivations for advocating for legalization, both generations are representative of a tolerance shift throughout the nation.

Ideas about marijuana are shifting as knowledge and technology advance, making it more accessible. The generational differences between boomers and millennials are vast, but surprisingly, if there’s one thing they can agree on, it’s weed.

Weed is winning the war on drugs

Every 25 seconds, someone is arrested for drug possession.

One in five incarcerated people are locked up for drug offenses.

The amount of people in prison for drug offenses is in the tens of thousands.

Yet lawmakers are answering citizen initiatives and are legalizing those ever-so-scary drugs, namely cannabis. Good.

Let’s start with some background. The war on drugs is America’s longest war, starting 50 years ago under former President Richard Nixon. At the time, Nixon called drug abuse “public enemy number one.” In 1973, Nixon created the Drug Enforcement Administration, which federally enforces the war on drugs. The agency sees its funding bolstered with each passing year, putting more and more money into the war on drugs.

Presidents on both sides of the aisle continued the war, from Ronald Reagan reiterating that the war on drugs was one of America’s most pressing issues to Bill Clinton raising a very prominent anti-drug voice into his cabinet. Even Joe Biden’s administration fired staffers for recreational cannabis use just a few weeks ago, despite the fact that smoking marijuana is legal in Washington, D.C. The biggest issue at hand is that the war on drugs is inherently rooted in racism, and we see that in its history.

ist roots. In the 1930s, with the depression looming and xenophobia rising, the United States government saw an opportunity. They rebranded cannabis as “marijuana” and criminalized it in order to stoke racist fears of Mexican immigrants.

Thankfully, politicians are starting to fix these deeply rooted issues. Policy is beginning to represent and portray the realities around weed, as 16 states and Washington, D.C., have fully legalized marijuana and even more have decriminalized it. That number is growing with each passing election cycle as more and more politicians see the benefits of legalization.

Consider our home state of Colorado, which was one of the first states to legalize recreational cannabis use. Colorado’s 2012 vote on legalization seems to already be reversing many of the war on drugs’ detrimental effects.

fell drastically after legalization, and have stayed low. Marijuanarelated DUIs are also relatively low when compared to other intoxicants, disproving another claim that stoned drivers would be running amok on Colorado roads.

Economically, legalization has been great for Colorado. The state has routinely collected millions of dollars in marijuana tax revenue over the past few years, and much of that money is going to fund public schools, law enforcement and health care. On top of that, marijuana sales were one of the few pieces of Colorado’s economy that held steady through the pandemic’s economic downturn, providing the state with an important monetary lifeline.

Colorado isn’t alone. Alaska saw an added $17 million in cannabis tax revenue, and Nevada is projected to see billions of dollars worth of cannabis related revenue.

Imagine if these benefits went nationwide. With the tax revenue, we could bolster funding for schools, health care, infrastructure and other federal projects. We could make strides to ending mass incarceration, which particularly impacts people of color. We could finally end a chapter of our nation’s history that exists mainly to perpetuate structural racism within our country.

One way or another, this darkness has got to give, and it seems like the time has come for us to finally end America’s longest and costliest war. So light one up — if you’re of age — turn on a heady Grateful Dead show and tell your elected officials to end the war on drugs.

Let’s reduce the stigma around weed

In 2012, Colorado became one of the first states to legalize marijuana for recreation, alongside Washington.

Being born and raised in Colorado, I am familiar with the ever-present, evolving dialogue around the drug.

While many people associate Colorado with marijuana — and we have garnered a reputation for ourselves as “freethinking stoners” — it’s important to recognize that Colorado’s weed culture wasn’t always this way. It took years for Amendment 64 to pass, with people on either side of the debate in what seemed like a never-ending tug-of-war battle.

The stigma around marijuana didn’t go away once it was legalized, and the drug still has a lot of negative connotations. When I was in middle school, our drug education program centered around abstinence, such as the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, though it was largely ineffective at preventing substance use.

The fear instilled from this misinformed education created a distorted view of what marijuana actually is. This view becomes hypocritical when it is put alongside alcohol, which is widely socially accepted. Many people partake in both substances — especially college students.

A recent study showed that around four out five college students consume alcohol to some extent. According to a national study, “In 2018, 43% of full-time college students aged 19-22 reported using marijuana at least once in the prior 12 months.”

Yet there is still an unfair stigma against weed when compared to alcohol. Some women have opened up about their experience with said hypocrisy during motherhood.

“Being judged for doing something nontoxic and totally organic, enjoying a God-given plant, by moms who suck back two bottles of Chardonnay like sports drinks feels like sh*t,” a Tennessee mom said.

Yet there is no hard evidence to suggest that anyone has died from a “weed overdose.” Verywell Mind said, “There have been a few isolated case reports where marijuana has been implicated in people’s death. However, a clear causal relationship has not been established.”

Meanwhile, deaths from alcohol use account for a little over 95,000 deaths in the United States each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Blindly stigmatizing weed also ignores the history of marijuana.

Marijuana use likely dates back to Asia around 500 BC, where ancient cultures used the plant as herbal medicine — not to get high. During the 19th and 20th centuries, people in the U.S largely used cannabis as a patent medicine.

People still use marijuana for its healing properties today. WebMD explains how people use medical marijuana for pain management of health conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis and many others.

Meanwhile, alcohol consumption poses a serious threat to the body.

Consistent alcohol use is linked to liver damage, pancreatitis, infertility and cancer among other serious health concerns.

This isn’t even mentioning the risks an unhealthy relationship with alcohol can do to the interpersonal lives of an individual. Alcohol abuse within a family can cause long-lasting troubles within it. An article published by pubmed.gov explained that it is linked to “high levels of interpersonal conflict, domestic violence, parental inadequacy, child abuse and negligence, financial and legal difficulties” and other dangers.

In a study published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, alcohol consumption among college students was negatively associated with motivation to achieve well in academics.

While marijuana consumption is also linked to worsening academic performance, the risk is not as high given that alcohol is more addictive than marijuana. A 1998 report shows alcohol’s potential for addiction as way more than marijuana.

Stigmatizing marijuana while simultaneously ignoring the risk of alcohol, an objectively more harmful substance, is hypocritical. Not only does it undermine the risks of alcohol, but it perpetuates a narrative that gatekeeps an effective medicine that treats a number of different conditions.

With that being said, marijuana is not the perfect plant. Like any drug, there are risks, and overconsumption is typically not a good thing, all else equal. An unbiased, comprehensive education is necessary for people to understand both the risks and the benefits this drug may present should someone choose to consume.

Glass blowing is an artform that us cannabis users rely on almost every day we partake. Without glass blowing coming to fruition, we would be stuck in the rolled ages. Bob Snodgrass was the man who brought glass pipes to life and invented many techniques in the world of glassblowing. He’s the Godfather of Glass. He would travel with The Dead around the country, selling his creations before he finally settled down in Eugene, Oregon with his family. Here, his craft truly came to life and would inspire new generations of glassblowers everywhere. One of Bob’s most famous glass blowing techniques is something that has since been dubbed “color changing glass” which changes color of the piece

gradually the more you smoke through it. This effect is achieved by mixing or “fuming” gold, silver, and platinum into the glass while forming the pipe. These results created much more beautiful glass than has been seen prior and helped the glass market take off.

These days, glass blowers can be found everywhere, and shops like Kind Creations have an area where you can watch glass blowers at work. With more techniques being invented, more materials being used in glass, like opal, and more practice, the results are over the top and insane to look at and watch be created. Kind Creations has several glass blowers to watch and their work is sold in the shop. Watching them work and create masterpieces is never a disappointing way to spend your time. You can even bring a broken piece in for them to try and fix, for a price and if it’s clean of course. Professional sports plays catch-up with weed laws

Throughout the four major professional sports organizations, 101 out of 123 professional teams play in regions where marijuana is legal in some regard, whether that be for medicinal or recreational use. That makes up for about 82% of all professional sports teams across the MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL, which includes a few teams in the NHL and MLB from Canada, where marijuana has been legal since 2018.

Since Colorado became the first state to legalize recreational marijuana use in 2012, the positive shift in public opinion surrounding the use of the drug has been surprisingly quick.

However, in the world of sports, viewing marijuana in a positive light is still contentious. I remember how scandalous it seemed when arguably the greatest Olympian of all time, Michael Phelps, was raked through the media mud for hitting a bong at a party at the University of South

Carolina in 2009.

Until 2019, the only professional sports league that didn’t include marijuana on its list of banned substances was the NHL. The league’s policy in handling positive marijuana tests is relatively similar to the way they treat alcohol; players will not be punished for testing positive for marijuana but may be entered into a substance abuse program if cases become severe.

The MLB was the first major organization to revert its position on marijuana and implement new rules that removed it from the organization’s list of banned substances.Their new policy mirrors the NHL’s. Under the MLB’s previous policy, positive tests resulted in mandatory treatment, which was accompanied by up to a $35,000 fine if a player refused to comply, but this will no longer be the case.

Most recently, the NBA also eased its marijuana restrictions in December 2020. Citing the pandemic, the league insisted that not testing for marijuana in the bubble limited unnecessary contacts, implying the league no

longer believes it’s necessary to test players for marijuana — another win for weed.

One of the most notable moves coming from a league regarding marijuana testing came from the NFL on March 15, 2020. Under a new collective bargaining agreement with the NFL Players Association, players who test positive for marijuana will no longer face suspension from games, which is a huge step away from the league’s old policy. On top of that, the minimum amount of marijuana in a player’s system required to result in a positive test was increased significantly.

That being said, multiple positive tests will still lead to players being entered into treatment programs, but it’s a step in the right direction.

Legendary players like Randy Moss have been advocating for the league to update its policy as early as 2016, with Moss being quoted saying, “The NFL just needs to loosen up and let everybody live.”

Yes, as Moss said, we do need to let

athletes “live” but maybe not for the reason you’re thinking. Moss is just one of many advocates who believe there is a recovery benefit for athletes in using marijuana and its derivative substances, particularly cannabidiol, or CBD. CBD is a non-psychoactive derivative of hemp and has been proven to have an anti-inflammatory effect, which is why it has garnered so much praise among athletes. Olympian gold medalist and Colorado State alum Amy Van Dyken credits CBD as an integral part of her recovery from an ATV accident in 2014 that left her paralyzed from the waist down.

UFC fighter Nate Diaz has also been a huge advocate for the recovery benefits of CBD and marijuana.

Diaz has never been shy from public attention, and in 2019, he received widespread media attention when he lit a joint at an open UFC practice to promote the CBD company he and his brother founded.

Leagues have taken notice of the potential benefit of these substances,

particularly the UFC and the MLB. The UFC has taken the stance that using CBD and marijuana for recovery and relaxation is a lot less detrimental to the health of athletes than the use of opioids and prescribed painkillers.

The MLB is more explicit in its discouragement of opioids, as their new drug policy states that while athletes will not be tested for marijuana, they will be tested for opioids.

This is where the conversation needs to be directed when discussing marijuana use in professional sports.

Athletes should not be punished for utilizing natural derivatives when it’s not even performance-enhancing in nature, especially when you consider the use of opioids and painkillers are still allowed.

The overall health of athletes is much more important than preserving draconic perceptions of a substance that could ultimately be used to better the recovery and well-being of those athletes.

Athletes, weed and poor decisions: They’re just like us

With the haze of April 20 on the horizon, let us take this time to remember that athletes are just like us common folk in the sense that a lot of them like smoking the devil’s lettuce, even when they shouldn’t be.

While many professional leagues have lessened the punishment for marijuana usage or have taken away testing altogether, there have still been plenty of humorous incidents within professional sports where athletes have gotten caught with the dirty herb.

As The Collegian features marijuana-related stories to usher in this year’s 4/20, we’ll recount a couple of the funniest weed-related occurrences in sports history below.

D’Angelo Russell, NBA

In May 2019, after the Brooklyn Nets’ first-round playoff loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, then-point guard D’Angelo Russell was looking to celebrate an impressive individual season.

The 6-foot-4-inch lefty was coming off a season that saw his first-ever allstar appearance and was heading back to Louisville, Kentucky, when his high was quickly grounded.

Russell was stopped by authorities in New York’s LaGuardia Airport after a U.S. Customs and Border Protection screening found a marijuana stash box in his bag. To Russell’s credit, he at least attempted some secrecy. However, his attempt to hide his weed is perhaps some of the best content that has come out of the NBA in years.

According to a report on the Complex website, Russell’s secret stash box was disguised as an Arizona iced tea can, which, when you think about it, is 100% an idea someone with their head in the clouds would think is absolutely foolproof.

D’Lo has made over $77 million in career earnings. You’d think he could have avoided illegal transporting when your pockets are that deep, but like the many misdemeanors NBA players have acquired over the years, he didn’t receive more than a light slap on the wrist.

Michael Phelps, swimmer

Olympic

The most decorated Olympian of all time, Michael Phelps’ legacy is synonymous with the

sport of swimming. Outside of the pool, Phelps also holds a spot in the heart of every stoner after a picture of him ripping a bong surfaced after his record-setting performance at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Despite his eight gold medals in the 2008 games, Phelps was immediately suspended from competition for three months and was immediately dropped from sponsorship by Kellogg, according to The New York Times, after the photo of him engaging in good vibes surfaced.

While the loss of a bland cereal sponsor must have been demoralizing, Phelps can find solace in the fact that he will forever be the most cited figure in counterarguments against the stereotype of lazy stoners.

Laremy Tunsil, NFL

While offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil isn’t quite the professional of the magnitude Phelps is, he too had a career-altering bong rip.

Back in the 2016 NFL draft, Tunsil was projected to be one of the top round-one picks. Moments before the draft, an old video was released by a hacker of Tunsil smoking with a gas mask bong. The video seemed straight out of an “Animal House”-esque movie and led to Tunsil sliding all the way to pick 13 in the draft.

Normally, athletes wait till they get to the professional level to get rooted in a scandal, but Tunsil had the foresight to get his controversy out of the way early.

Can marijuana benefit in-game performances?

Athletes have long preached about the recovery benefits of marijuana and its derivatives.

Whether it is the antiinflammatory properties found in cannabidiol or the pain relief that THC, marijuana’s psychoactive component, can provide or often a combination of both, athletes have become increasingly vocal in recent years about the plant’s positive effects.

A narrative that gets far less attention is the athletes that are outspoken about the effect marijuana has directly on their performance abilities. Many athletes admit to playing high during their professional careers after they retire, but aside from pot’s recovery properties, is there an argument for any in-game benefits?

“Cannabis in Sport,” an article by Marilyn A. Huestis, Irene Mazzoni and Olivier Rabin published in Sports Medicine in 2011, looked to examine that exact question.

“Athletes under the influence of cannabis indicate that their thoughts flow more easily and their decision-making and creativity is enhanced; others claim that cannabis improves their concentration or reduces pain,” the article states. “Health professionals have encountered athletes including gymnasts, divers, football players and basketball players who claim smoking cannabis before play helps them to focus better.”

Matt Barnes, a 14-year veteran of the NBA and outspoken supporter of the benefits of marijuana, said in an interview with Bleacher Report that he believes a lot of his success on the court came when he was high.

“All of my best games, I was medicated,” Barnes said in the interview. “It wasn’t every single game, but in 15 years, it was a lot.”

The National Institute on Drug Abuse states that the effects of THC can include difficulty with thinking and problem-solving, changes in mood and impaired memory and body movement; however, the article in Sports

Medicine hypothesizes effects that are often perceived to be negative can actually have positive effects on performance when framed in the context of sports.

“Clearly, cannabis induces euphoria, improves selfconfidence, induces relaxation and steadiness and relieves the stress of competition,” the article said. “Cannabis increases risktaking and this perhaps improves training and performance, yielding a competitive edge.”

“So while it is clear that marijuana is capable of benefiting athletic performance, it may ultimately be more of a testament to the athlete and their mental fortitude rather than the supposed miracle properties of the drug itself.”

Former NFL tackle Eben Britton is another example of a professional athlete who believes their performance was greatly improved with marijuana.

In an interview with the New York Post, Britton said, “NFL games I played stoned were some of the best I ever played. Cannabis cements your surroundings.”

Britton’s comment directly reflects the idea of marijuana’s ability to enhance sensory perception, another benefit addressed in the “Cannabis in Sport” article.

As marijuana continues to be removed from banned substance

lists and is less tested for in professional sports, more evidence will become available on if there are direct correlations between improved performance and usage of the controversial leaf.

Huestis, Mazzoni and Rabin’s article directly addresses the need for more information to be more comprehensive, but as of now, many signs point to greater benefits in performance than initially expected.

“In conclusion, although more scientific information is needed, based on current animal and human studies as well as on interviews with athletes and information from the field, cannabis can be performanceenhancing for some athletes and sports disciplines,” the article said.

The article’s conclusion brings up an extremely valid point that the potential benefits of cannabis in sports cannot be generalized to all athletes.

According to a report republished on Neuroscience News originally led by Steven Laviolette Ph.D., a professor at the University of Western Ontario’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, the different ways people respond to the effects of marijuana is due to the individual makeup and the subsequent differences of humans.

“Our data indicate that because the reward and aversion are produced by anatomically distinct areas, the different effects between individuals is likely due to genetic variation leading to differential sensitivity of each area,” the study said.

This means that athletes like Barnes and Britton may have been able to utilize the effects of marijuana to their advantage simply because they are genetically wired to handle it in a functional manner.

So while it is clear that marijuana is capable of benefiting athletic performance, it may ultimately be more of a testament to the athlete and their mental fortitude rather than the supposed miracle properties of the drug itself.

Spring Break Staycation Meals

With spring break around the corner there is no better time to start stocking up on all the ingredients you’ll need to make some delicious staycation meals. Follow the recipes below to explore a tropical twist to some great tacos and chicken skewers.

30 minute

Grilled Chicken & Mango Skewers

Ingredients: 3 medium ears sweet corn 1 tbsp butter ⅓ cup plus 3 tablespoons sliced green onions, divided 1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch cubes ¼ cup fresh lime juice 1 tbsp sugar ½ tsp salt ¼ tsp pepper 1 medium mango, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil Optional: 1 tsp chili powder & ½ tsp cayenne pepper (for added heat) Cut corn from cobs. In a large skillet, heat butter over medium-high heat; saute cut corn until crisp-tender, about 5 min. Stir in ⅓ cup green onions. Keep warm. In a large bowl, mix together the olive oil, lime juice, salt, pepper, sugar and optional chili powder and cayenne. Add the chicken and mangoes and stir to coat with the marinade. For best flavor, cover and refrigerate chicken in the marinade for 2 to 4 hrs. Prepare a medium hot grill. Remove the chicken and mangoes from the marinade and thread onto skewers, alternating the pieces and dividing them evenly. Grill, covered, over medium heat or broil 4 inches from heat until chicken is no longer pink, 10-12 min, rotating skewers occasionally. Serve over corn mixture sprinkled with remaining green onions. Enjoy!

Black Bean tropical Street Tacos Ingredients:

2 teaspoons cooking oil ¼ cup diced red onion 1 cup cooked black beans (about 1 can drained and rinsed) 1 tsp cumin 1 tsp chili powder 1 tsp soy sauce 2 cloves pressed garlic 6-12 small street taco tortillas 1 cup packaged broccoli slaw (sub with greens of choice) Tropical Fruit Salsa: ⅓ cup diced pineapple ⅓ cup diced mango ¼ cup diced red bell pepper ¼ cup diced tomato ½ lime zest and juice 1 minced jalapeño pepper (remove seeds to reduce heat) ¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro loose Salt to taste Heat oil in a small saucepan. Add onion, beans, cumin, chili powder, soy sauce, and garlic and cook over medium heat until hot, about 6-8 min. Make fruit salsa by combining diced pineapple, mango, bell pepper, tomato, lime, jalapeño, cilantro, and salt in a medium-sized mixing bowl, tossing, and setting aside. Char or warm tortillas before laying them flat for assembly. Top each tortilla with an evenly divided amount of broccoli slaw, black bean filling, and fruit salsa.

Jicama and Pineapple Guacamole

Ingredients: 3 medium ripe avocado, peeled and cubed 2 to 3 tbsp fresh lime juice ½ to 1 tsp kosher salt ½ cup unsweetened pineapple chunks ½ cup cubed peeled jicama In a bowl, mash avocados until almost smooth. Stir in lime juice and ½ teaspoon salt. Let stand 10 min until flavors are fully blended. Taste test guacamole and add additional lime juice and salt, if needed. Top with pineapple and jicama. Serve on toast as a meal or enjoy with tortilla chips or fresh sliced vegetables for scooping.

Cinema to get stoned to: 3 movies for 4/20

The sun is shining in the sky, the nip of winter breezes have been replaced by the warm, motherly hug of fresh spring air, and all those posses of chiseled, shirtless, spike-balling summer studs have reappeared on the quad to make the rest of us marshmallow-torsoed, spaghettiarmed Michelin men feel inadequate and remind us just how hopeless our chances of ever finding a girlfriend in this Adonis-laden land truly are.

Fortunately for us, we live in Colorado, where you don’t need balloon biceps and the sense of self-satisfaction they provide to feel good in the spring. All you need is about $20, some rolling papers and a few hours to spend sitting in your room drumming up elaborate, abstract hypotheses about how the U.S. government is secretly a front for, like, an underground coven of witches who use Food and Drug Administration-funded research to develop potions that turn Russian spies into toads.

If you’re looking to toke your troubles away this 4/20, there’s no better companion than a nice stoner flick to heighten your high with dazzling colors and psychedelic cinematic compositions. Here is our list of the top three movies to watch this April 20.

1. ‘Dazed and Confused’

Remember high school? No, you don’t. The human brain is naturally

predisposed to eliminate traumatic experiences from its memory, so it is neurologically impossible for anyone apart from cheerleaders, football players and student body presidents to have any recollection of what the hell happened in their lives between the ages of 14 and 18.

And even then, all the cheerleaders, football players and student body presidents were too drunk or coked out of their minds to form new memories, so it’s likely they can’t recall the time period too well either.

However, regardless of whether or not the mental still frames from the era are still on display in the museum of your episodic memory, the fact remains that there was, indeed, a time in your life when you were 15, and you thought Hollister was cool, and you unironically used the word “hella” in your sentences.

This is also probably the time when you had your first experience with Satan’s cigarettes and their magical mind-altering powers. And when it comes to depictions of high school stoner life on film, none are better than this 1993 Richard Linklater classic. Complete with a shaggy-haired, cowboy-booted Ben Affleck and a smooth-walking, silktalking McConaughey in his film debut, it’s the perfect flick to flame up with.

2. ‘Alice in Wonderland’

Any adaptation of Lewis Caroll’s Victorian era, skittle-twisted literary glue snort is guaranteed to hype up any high. Whether it be Disney’s 1951 classic with its

psycho-chromatic color palette and warped artistic compositions or Tim Burton’s narratively dead but aesthetically vibrant 2010 remake, the nonsensical story and logicless locale of Wonderland lend themselves perfectly to the kind of demented designs that make for satisfying stoner fare.

However, no Disney-fied descent down the rabbit hole could ever match the unbeatably hokey yet perfectly uncanny interpretation brought to life in the made-for-TV, turn-of-the-millennia mindf*ck concocted by the Hallmark Channel in 1999.

Boasting a bafflingly spectacular cast — how the hell they managed to fit salaries for Whoopi Goldberg, Ben Kingsley, Martin Short, Gene Wilder, Christopher Lloyd, Robbie Coltrane, Norm Peterson from “Cheers” and Deb from “Napoleon Dynamite” into their $8 budget will forever baffle me — this televisual acid trip is full of mechanical hare heads, rubberfaced babies and unsettling late-90s CGI guaranteed to hype up your 4/20 high.

3. ‘Scooby-Doo’

Early 2000s film producers must have been some of the suavest, slicktongued individuals in the world.

They somehow managed to rope Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Linda Cardellini, Matthew Lillard, Isla Fisher and Rowan Atkinson to spend an hour and a half

making fart jokes with a computergenerated great dane.

The real quandary is how they got the cast to reunite for “ScoobyDoo 2: Monsters Unleashed” two years later. Did they hire a bunch of skinny purple Spooky Island aliendemons to steal their bodies and sign their contracts for them? I know that sounds far out, but I can’t think of any

other plausible explanation.

For all its faults, though, there’s no denying that 2002’s “Scooby-Doo” is a masterpiece of brainless toilet humor and a treat to consume true Shaggy-style: with a ton of snacks and a couple of Scooby-Doobies.

Food Feuds: The marvelous munchie matchup

Let’s face it — Fort Collins is a city of stoners. Whether this is unique to FoCo, a place where you’ll see more than one Cheba Hut Toasted Subs and plenty of smoke shops, or whether it’s just on account of our weed-centric state, the stoner population remains steady. And hungry.

This week, I’m taking a break from traditional FoCo food matchups to orchestrate the showdown between two of this town’s sweet favorites: Insomnia Cookies and Peace, Love and Little Donuts.

True, it’s harder to compare cookies to donuts, but hey, this one’s for the stoners. This is based not on the quality and comparison of food but on the quality of the munchie satisfaction. Today, I’m no food critic; I am but a humble representative of the kush-loving kids who crave sugar on their highs.

Insomnia Cookies

While it’s a shame I’m not sponsored for this, what’s not a shame is Insomnia’s relatively new $25 Commercial Break Snack Pack. This delicious deal includes six mini cookies, two classics, two deluxes, two brownies, one pint of ice cream and one dipper

(frosting) cup.

For reference, the item with the closest price at $25.75 is the Insomniac Celebration Pack, including a 6-inch cookie cake, a pint of ice cream and a Super 6 pack, which includes five classic cookies and one deluxe. This, and other packs, is an excellent option, but are you getting the most out of it?

Obviously what you get here depends on what you like best, and when stoned, it’s normal to not care as long as you get your sugar fix. At the end of the day, Insomnia brings what I believe to be the best cookie goodness in town — sorry, Mary’s Mountain Cookies.

I tend to get classic chocolate chip cookies, triple chocolate and salted caramel. Their ice cream isn’t unique, but one can’t go without mentioning the cookies are always warm when you get them, even if they’re delivered. That being said, the chocolate chips are always just slightly melted, but not enough to be messy, and the dough is the soft, pull-apart-perfectly kind.

Additionally, if you’re not with more people or don’t want a crazy amount of cookies, any of Insomnia’s other packs and prices will work just fine. All you need to worry about is the flavor — and with Insomnia, it’s not a worry at all.

On top of the deal, Insomnia

gets major cookie points for not only having their own app but delivering until 3 a.m. ThursdaySaturday and 1 a.m. other days.

Are you kidding? Those are prime stoner hours, my friend. Now pass the bong and go order some killer cookies.

Peace, Love Donuts

Little

Insomnia’s College Avenue neighbor couldn’t really compete with cookies. Instead, they present the pothead’s perfect dream in a groovy joint, which is on its own level entirely.

At Peace, Love and Little Donuts, you can “feed your inner hippie” with tiny creations of their own powerful flavors. Why get giant donuts of only a few flavors when you can have one or two bites of 12? Or three bites if you have self-control, like a freak.

At the time of ordering, frankly, I was running low on time, so I only got a half dozen. A wonderful experience? Without a doubt. But it doesn’t do justice to the sheer divinity that is the Peace, Love and Little Donuts assemblage.

My favorite flavors, all on a glorious puff of yeast-leavened dough, are s’mores, strawberry cheesecake, apple pie and Butterfinger, dubbed “Buttafinger.” Peace, Love changes them up all the time, though, and there are easily dozens of flavors to

choose from on any given day.

Also, fret not, my marijuana fiends who fear going out in public for everyone to know that they’re high — Grubhub delivers these compact pockets of scrumptiousness.

So who wins this round of Food Feuds? My money’s on Peace, Love and Little Donuts.

“But Renee, how could you compare cookies to donuts?!” I don’t know, don’t be too sober when you read this — you won’t have to think as hard. While Insomnia is mad exquisite, Peace, Love is obviously just made for the stoners, so it takes this round

of munchie madness without a doubt.

Both places offer incredible foods for your cottonmouth sweet tooth, and with late-night delivery, Insomnia knows their market, but the products simply don’t reflect that. But people — Peace, Love has a Fruity Pebbles donut. And something called “Magically Delicious.” And strawberry French toast. That’s not made for sober people!

So next time you decide to partake in the sweet, sweet oui’d, you know where to go next.

Blazed bops: A mix of marijuana-induced jam sessions

After a long wait, spring is in the air once again. No more barring yourself indoors to escape the wildfires or those classic Colorado blizzards; the flowers are in bloom and, of course, so is the bud. After all, what is April if not our annually appointed, communal cannabis convention?

With the spirit of 4/20 (and the scent) in the air, it’s time to get down with another Mary Jane jam session.

1. ‘I Don’t Care Anymore’

by Jax Anderson feat.

K.Flay

Any marijuana mixtape worth its salt has to have an assortment of mellow songs, and this tranquil tune featuring K.Flay is no exception. The track is phenomenally simple — just a smooth instrumental with soft lyrics laced over the top. For a first-timer who is absolutely catatonic from the “research phase,” this song is ethereal and easy to enjoy.

2. ‘Heat Waves (with iann dior)’ by Glass Animals

As a far more energetic song, “Heat Waves (with iann dior)” by Glass Animals provides a lot more sensory stimulation than your token smoke song. I found this version of the song significantly more potent, with a refreshing, perfectly-timed drop right at the beginning that

jump-starts the momentum for the rest of the song.

3. ‘Doing It to Death’ by The Kills

This track from The Kills is a little darker in theme, but the musical components work together in an intoxicating tune about indulging in your vices. The sultry vocals from Jamie Hince and Alison Mosshart pull the listener in for a song sure to entrance you.

While “doing it to death” surely isn’t advised, a little self-aware sulking is good for the soul.

4. ‘The Other Side of Paradise’ by Glass Animals

You could argue it’s cheating to include Glass Animals twice — but it’s simply hard to go wrong with a tune from this psychedelic pop group. Earning it yet another place on this playlist, “The Other Side of Paradise” swells back and forth to create a rolling wave of sensation. Additionally, the soft grunts interspersed throughout the track add a level of vocal complexity, with the deeper sounds contrasting with the synth and upbeat pacing perfectly.

5. ‘Feeling Good’ by Michael Bublé

This track is iconic but never overrated, and it’s a hill I’m willing to die on. Even if it isn’t your typical smoke song, everything about “Feeling Good” is right in line with our most weed-centric ideals. It’s the liberation from responsibility and negativity and that feeling of rejuvenation makes this song positively euphoric.
