ADVOCATING FOR SURVIVORS OF INTERPERSONAL VIOLENCE

Colorado State University has many sexual assault and relationship violence resources. The Women and Gender Advocacy Center is one that provides programs and resources to help sexual assault survivors and educate members of the CSU community.

WGAC Interim Director Casey Malsam said the WGAC’s services are always free of charge. The WGAC provides “information about academic, legal, medical, emotional and student conduct resources to survivors” of interpersonal violence as well as secondary survivors, according to its website.

“We listen to what a student is saying are some of their needs and then try to figure out the totality and what resources might be useful to them,” Malsam said.

The WGAC’s website explains its resources, which include the 24-hour Victim Assistance Team — a hotline that is always available to assist survivors and their loved ones.

Survivors can also call the WGAC and ask to speak with an

advocate or use the chat feature on the website, which is operational while classes are in session, from 1-4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

The WGAC has peer educators and professionals who provide education and programming.

According to the WGAC’s website, “information shared with advocates is confidential unless the person is a danger to themselves, someone is in imminent danger, a child currently under 18 has been abused or if the perpetrator is currently in a position of power over minors (even if the survivor is over the age of 18).”

“Advocates can talk through the pros and cons of different decisions; they can help a student make the decision that’s going to be right for them,” Malsam said. “We try to be pretty neutral … because it’s not about what the advocate thinks is best, it’s about what the student thinks is best, and they just need some help and guidance in choosing what’s going to be best for them in their particular situation.”

In addition to resources that support survivors of interpersonal violence, the WGAC focuses on education. According to the WGAC’s website, its educational programming includes education on

topics of interpersonal violence and survivor voice as well as gender and social justice.

“Sometimes it’s hard navigating systems that you don’t navigate on a daily basis, and our advocates do. So it can be really helpful to have an advocate along as you’re navigating a system that’s unfamiliar to you.”

Brigade, which is a peer education team that does presentations on topics such as understanding consent, healthy relationships and setting boundaries, according to Malsam. Another program that raises awareness is the Survivors’ Speakers Bureau, which provides survivors with an opportunity to tell their stories.

Malsam also spoke about how the WGAC has helped survivors and how the number of people they’ve served has continued to increase over past years. Malsam said the WGAC has served over 500 students who have experienced interpersonal violence.

“Every year our numbers go up in

terms of students who utilize our services,” Malsam said. “Sometimes it’s hard navigating systems that you don’t navigate on a daily basis, and our advocates do. So it can be really helpful to have an advocate along as you’re navigating a system that’s unfamiliar to you.”

In order to get involved, students can sign up for the WGAC’s newsletter, volunteer in the office and follow the center on social media.

In addition to the WGAC, the CSU Health Network also offers counseling services and has women’s and gender care.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE IN MANAGING ADHD IN COLLEGE

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder affects about 4.4% of adults in the United States, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Applied to the 28,000 students on the Colorado State University campus, that is an estimated 1,200 students who may experience the condition.

ADHD can manifest itself in different ways. Hyperactivity and fidgeting, problems with focusing on tasks without distraction,

impulsivity and maintaining emotional regulation can all result from ADHD, according to an email from Dawnelle Schatte, director of psychiatry services at the CSU Health Network.

“I think the most common misconception is it is a disorder of functioning in school, but that is only a tiny part of the condition,” Schatte wrote. “This is a problem 365 days a year, 24 hours per day.”

“Many people don’t realize that the symptoms of ADHD aren’t something that you only sometimes struggle with,” wrote Rebecca Klumpenhower, a CSU sophomore who was diagnosed with the condition in the second grade.

In an email, Klumpenhower said the earliest sign she had ADHD was a struggle with emotional regulation when frustrated or angry, especially when switching between tasks.

In college, she said her ADHD impacts her ability to focus academically, especially when initiating long or tedious tasks.

“Often I will sit at my desk with all the materials I need to do my work, but I simply cannot force my brain to type even one sentence,” Klumpenhower wrote. “It can take me hours to write one page of an

essay when I know that if I were more focused, it could have been finished in 30 minutes.”

However, ADHD can have multiple layers to its effects on students.

“I can focus on multiple tasks at the same time,” Klumpenhower wrote. “Somehow, managing 16 credit hours, a campus job, church and plans with friends is easier for my brain to organize than one paper.”

ADHD can be a strength in helping students take chances when problem-solving and thinking outside the box in creative situations, Schatte wrote.

“Even I with ADHD have been able to focus and reach the top 15% of my high school class,” wrote Quinn Heptig, a CSU firstyear, in an email.

Students with ADHD can find solutions to manage the difficulties they experience.

Klumpenhower wrote staying ahead on work to account for it taking longer than expected and using planners to write out tasks have been effective strategies for managing ADHD in her experience.

Similarly, Schatte suggested students may benefit from a structured scheduled — students may find it helpful to have a color-

coded calendar or a schedule on an electronic device so it may be accessed everywhere.

Additionally, managing time by accounting for the time it takes to get ready for events can also help students. In her email, Schatte described setting things out at night for the next day as a great way to lessen the cognitive burden the next morning.

Also recommended by Schatte is making sure to get enough sleep.

“One-third of people with ADHD have a diagnosable sleep condition, and many struggle to settle their minds and bodies down to fall asleep, which leads to worsening of all of the symptoms,” she wrote.

A key point is ADHD is different for everyone.

“ADHD solutions are as different as the symptoms depending on the person,” Schatte wrote.

“I experimented around for a while and found that music was a great way to suppress it for long periods of time,” Heptig wrote. “Every person is different, ... but that doesn’t mean someone else’s

workaround may not work for you.”

“The hardest part about having ADHD in college is that it can be managed in a way that people don’t know how hard you have to work for your success,” Klumpenhower wrote.

Students struggling with ADHD may seek resources at the Student Disability Center, Student Case Management or the CSU Health Network.

GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR DINING HALL EXPERIENCE

Moving into the dorms and starting life away from your family, your home and your own kitchen can be daunting — especially if you’re like me and are a picky eater.

You’ve probably already seen the meme accounts posting about bad dining hall food and limited options, but I’m here to tell you it doesn’t have to be that way.

I’ve worked in the Colorado State University dining halls for three years now, and while it’s certainly not a Gordon Ramsay dining experience, here are my behind-the-scenes tips for how to stay happy and healthy while living and eating on campus.

Discover the unique aspects of each hall At CSU, you have the option between four main dining halls — Braiden Dining Center, Durrell Dining Center, The Foundry and Ram’s Horn. Within each dining hall, you’ll find do’s and don’ts, figure out your favorite meals each

day of the week and probably have something you consistently dislike at all of them.

Braiden is a popular lunch spot because it’s the closest to the academic buildings, and it offers its speciality RAMwich Express, where you can get customized sandwiches made with highquality deli meat.

“More often than not, someone at the dining halls will be happy to remake your food to ensure there’s no cross-contamination, combine a meal without that one specific ingredient or find something different that fits your needs and has some variety.”

The Foundry has a great variety of options, and because it’s the newest (or most recently renovated) dining hall on campus, it’s got a great ambiance if you don’t want to feel like the broke college student you may be.

Ram’s Horn and Durrell both have marketplace and cafe locations where you can get espresso, snacks and more.

Ram’s Horn also boasts its Mongolian grill, which is a fun way to mix up your meals each day.

Durrell is a bit unique this year because it’s going to operate entirely through Grubhub, with different stations or “stores” open throughout the day. This is a good option if you want to take your food back to your room, but it does have dine-in seating, too.

soy allergy, you’re vegan, you have celiac disease or you’re allergic to peppers, ask questions, tell the folks behind the counter and make the dining halls work for you.

More often than not, someone at the dining halls will be happy to remake your food to ensure there’s no cross-contamination, combine a meal without that one specific ingredient or find something different that fits your needs and has some variety.

Know how to use your meal plan

The CSU meal plans are based on weekly allocations, meaning your available meals will reset every week. You have a few weeks at the beginning of the semester to change your meal plan, and that’s an important time for you to pay attention to how much you’re eating so you don’t end up hungry at the end of each week come October.

Meal plans reset on Friday nights, so you should plan your week accordingly. Meal swipes don’t roll over week to week, so if you don’t use them all by Friday, you’ll lose them forever.

Ask and they will accommodate you

Throughout my time as a dining hall employee, this is probably the thing I see students do the least, but you shouldn’t be afraid to interact with employees and ask for what you need.

If you have an allergy or dietary restriction, this advice is specifically for you: Ask for accommodations, and you will be accommodated. Depending on your diet, whether you have a

new meal. And if you’re sick of the same vegetarian option being offered day after day, ask to speak with a chef or manager and see what they can do to help make your experience more enjoyable.

The state-classified employees who make all the food in the dining halls can be identified by their black and gray uniforms with chef ’s coats and striped pants. Chat with these folks, learn their names and ask them questions about your food. At the end of the day, all they want is to serve you a tasty, safe meal.

Sometimes the same meal will be offered repeatedly, and if you can only eat specific foods, it becomes tiresome and boring. When that’s the case, try to switch it up.

Every dining hall has a variety of stations, and you can always take one or two things from each station to make a

Meal plan usage is also restricted to two swipes per meal period. The meal periods will be listed in the dining halls and usually align with meal times like breakfast, lunch, late lunch and dinner. It does not matter how you use your meal swipes or which hall you use them in — if you’ve used two in a period, the meal check system will not let you use another.

Meal periods are also important to remember because if you don’t want to waste your unused swipes, you should plan ahead to use an extra one at the end of each day or during each meal period on Friday.

Don’t expect to be able to go into the marketplaces at 7 p.m. on a Friday and use five meal swipes.

Also in the marketplaces, keep in mind that you have $9 worth of items you can buy with one meal swipe. If you’re only getting one thing, consider stocking up on some snacks or using RamCash instead of a full swipe — that way, you get the most out of your meal plan.

CONTRIBUTE TO SUSTAINABILITY ON CAMPUS WITH THESE CLUBS, COURSES

If you are new to the Colorado State University campus this fall, you may immediately notice the commitment to being green that is prevalent all around you.

From classes your advisor has suggested you take to the composting posters all over the dining halls, it is likely obvious the saying “Rams take care of Rams” extends to the environment in which the CSU community resides.

Many incoming students may be new to sustainable practices, and if you are interested in participating in the movement, some of the easiest ways to do so are education, action and participation.

“There are so many opportunities out there that it can be hard to find the good ones,” said Sarah Williams, president of the CSU Society for Ecological Restoration Student Guild. “So hopefully we can put people in touch with those.”

SER is one of many organizations that students can join in an effort to be more environmentally conscious.

They provide hands-on events where students can participate in building dams or collecting seeds, and they allow students to network with people working in the field if they are

interested in pursuing sustainability.

Other opportunities include the Zero Waste Team and Eco Leaders, who guide students in more campusfocused sustainability efforts.

“With how tangible the results are and how much of an impact we really make, there’s a lot of benefits to Zero Waste,” said Rachel Lilley, the social media officer of the Zero Waste Team. “Our main focus is making sure the compost line remains clean.”

The Zero Waste Team sorts compost at basketball games and makes an effort to maintain sustainable practices on campus, a goal they share with the broader CSU community.

“A lot of students come to CSU because of the reputation they have for not just sustainability but environmental science and conservation and a lot of things related to sustainability,” said Peter Backlund, associate director of the School of Global Environmental Sustainability at CSU. There are also annual sustainability reports from Housing & Dining Services, local composting and a large portion of classes and practices dedicated to making CSU a leader in sustainability.

“Where I’m from, I didn’t really know what compost was until I moved here, and it’s really nice that we have our own compost facility because

there aren’t that many compost facilities in Colorado,” Lilley said.

CSU students have the opportunity to make a real commitment to sustainability, whether it is through clubs or even their education.

“We try to promote sustainability concepts across all the colleges,” Backlund said. “One thing students can do is take the sustainability minor offered through my college.”

Even without taking on sustainability-focused minors and majors, students can still educate themselves via sustainability-focused courses available to all colleges. There are financial sustainability courses, environmental literature courses, environmental ethics courses and so much more beyond science courses.

And if even that feels like too much of a commitment, there are many personal practices students can follow.

“One thing that every student on campus is doing for sure is relying on human power for transportation,” Backlund said. “If you get around without burning fossil fuel, that’s a big positive for the environment.”

If students wish to take it a step further, they can reduce their personal waste through thrifting, composting and eating locally sourced foods or even going vegetarian or vegan once or twice a week if not full time, Backlund said.

“I’ve been trying to thrift and

find as much as I can on Facebook Marketplace, and I feel like for incoming freshmen, that’s also a really good place to look,” Williams said.

“I mean, you can go to Target and buy all of your essentials, which is still affordable, but there are so many students looking to get rid of things.”

Especially when living in the dorms, it can be hard to feel like you have control of your impacts, but there are still so many things to do to create positive change.

“I always separated my compost,” Williams said. “They don’t give you a bin, but I would have a separate bag. The compost is right out by the trash, so if you’re already going out, (you) might as well make sure that you are composting what you can.

That’s a really easy step because they make it so accessible for us.”

Truly the focus for students who wish to be involved in the culture of sustainability should be being aware.

Educate yourself and utilize the resources provided to you to become more educated on the issue, whether that is through clubs or classes.

HERE’S WHAT TO CONSIDER BEFORE RUSHING INTO GREEK LIFE

Crazy parties may be all that comes to mind when thinking of joining a fraternity or sorority this fall, but the reality is much more complex. If you really intend to join in on the fun, you should consider if the commitment is right for you.

While movies like “Neighbors” may have you believing fraternities and sororities are full of vindictive pranksters, many students at Colorado State University have found their Ramily within the historic Greek life organizations.

“It’s important to look for the people you get along with,” said Trey Wallen, president of fraternity Delta Tau Delta. “A lot of people come in looking for a frat they saw in a movie or the place their dad went to, and not every frat is going to be the same on every campus.”

Greek life is founded on the idea of brotherhood and sisterhood, and at CSU, the goal is “to challenge and encourage one’s journey toward growth and the achievement of unique potential,” according to the CSU Fraternity and Sorority Life website.

This kind of commitment isn’t for everyone, and if you aren’t interested,

there are plenty of alternative communities and clubs willing to welcome you. But there’s a lot more variety at CSU than you may think.

And the sense of community these organizations provide is appealing to many students. “(New pledges) should strive to find the fraternity that fits them,” said Sean Lowry, FarmHouse Fraternity diversity and inclusion chair and scholarship director. “Fraternities aren’t all the same, especially at CSU.” Choosing what best fits you is essential because the connections built within Greek life are invaluable.

“When my mom’s parents passed away, all of her sorority sisters were at our house,” said McKenna Daly, president of Chi Omega at CSU. “My dad was helping her cope, and they were making us meals and driving me to school.”

“A lot of people say that joining a sorority is you buying friends, and in a way, you’re not wrong,” Daly said.

“But it’s not that. It’s you paying for an organization, networking opportunities and meeting awesome people along the way.”

This community aspect of Greek life is universal, and even the rush process can help you make lifelong friendships. A lot of students find

their people through the Greek life community, but it isn’t essential to having a healthy social life in college.

“If you don’t want to rush a frat, don’t feel pressured to,” Wallen said.

“You can meet people naturally, and if that leads you to a frat you like, great.

If not, great.”

Some aspects of Greek life can be overwhelming, so being transparent with yourself and your needs as an individual is crucial when going through recruitment.

Drinking culture is one of the aspects that can throw off members’ academics, Lowry said. When students prioritize partying over academics is when they see the most issues in scholarships.

“It depends on how seriously you take it,” Lowry said. “For me personally, when I see people drinking, it makes me aware, and for other people, they may not have as many excuses to drink if they weren’t in a fraternity.”

Even with some of the typical issues associated with Greek life, like hazing and pressure to drink, CSU tries its best to make Greek life safe and enjoyable for members.

“In some ways, rightfully so, fraternity and sorority life gets a bad reputation because of a lot of terrible

instances that do happen,” Daly said.

“But I do think at CSU we work really hard to be progressive and make positive changes.”

“We work really hard to make it accessible for all individuals to the best of our ability,” Daly said. “In our chapter in particular, nationally we accept all individuals who identify as a woman, so trans women are allowed in our organization, and it’s not tied to your birth gender in any way.”

Inclusivity is important to the CSU community and is listed as one of the university’s pillars of community. And while Greek life isn’t for everyone, there’s a lot of variety for those interested — it doesn’t have to be like the movies.

“There are social organizations, such as Chi Omega, but we also have cultural organizations, and we have a STEM sorority and things like that,” Daly said. “You end up where you’re meant to be.”

If you’re looking for a community to jump into this fall, consider going through Greek life recruitment. Even if you don’t commit, you’ll likely make some lifelong friendships in the process.

Becoming a cannabis connoisseur doesn’t happen overnight. Just like anything else,being an educated stoner takes practice, courage and a personal touch of creativity. While most people learn the angles of alcohol, here’s a beginners’ guide for those of you who are new to the drug or those of you who just need a refresher.

The basics

When you’re headed to your local dispensary, you’ll have three baseline options: sativa, indica and hybrid. The general vibe of each can be used to your advantage or to achieve your goal of just getting a nice high.

Sativa is known for its “head high” and upbeat feeling. Unlike its friend indica, you shouldn’t find yourself getting drowsy.

However, if a good night’s rest is what you’re looking for, indica will ease the entirety of your body. But let’s say you’re in need of a simple high: A hybrid strand would be an excellent in-between choice.

Blazin’ options Now, your next choice once you’ve picked your strand is how you want to consume the herb. This is where you get to be creative in the many ways to smoke and decide what fits your needs.

To quickly acknowledge the diversity cannabis brings, you can either smoke a joint, blunt, onehitter, pipe, bong, bubbler, vaporizer, dab rig, dab pen or nectar collector or eat an edible. These are your most basic forms of intake in the United States, but they can vary through the cultures of the world. The best way to organize these efficiently is by highness, convenience and price.

If you’re looking to head to another planet and solely get super high, you’d probably enjoy a dab rig, dab pen or nectar collector.

The commonality of these three is they all use wax, which is one of the highest potencies of weed within the options here. While you might cough up a lung, it ranks lower on how smelly the exhale is — though it can also show on the more expensive side.

A joint, blunt, one-hitter, pipe, bubbler or bong can be a simple choice, depending on the size.

The smaller the roll, the more in control. Joints, blunts and a one-hitter can be nice for the convenience of the travel sizes, and they can be easy on the budget. A pipe or bong can be more enjoyed if you’re staying in one spot, and you can pick your own style with what your pipe or bong will look like.

A vaporizer and edibles are the oddballs of the group, but they’re just as appealing.

Vaporizers can be better for your lungs but are the most expensive way to smoke cannabis. However, edibles are their own category since you can ingest them as a sweet,

drink, gummy or even make them at home.

Friendly tips

While smoking cannabis can be an enjoyable thing for most, like alcohol, it’s important to pace yourself. Cannabis is very much a marathon and not a sprint, so start with one edible and not a handful.

Try to evenly light your joints and blunts so you don’t waste them, along with sectioning your bowls for efficiency and sharing if that’s the environment you find yourself in.

Wait a few seconds before ripping your dab rig or nectar collector right after you torch it so you can save a layer of skin on the back of your throat, and small hits from your pen can relate to this as well.

A QUICK GUIDE TO DISPENSARIES NEAR CSU’S CAMPUS

It’s that time of year again: back to school. As a student in Colorado, you have access to unique opportunities to purchase recreational cannabis, provided you are of legal age.

Whether you want to try something new, pick up a favorite strain or are completely clueless, this article is for you. There are quite a few dispensaries in Fort Collins, but here is a quick list of the dispensaries closest to the Colorado State University campus.

As a quick note, you are not allowed to possess cannabis on campus. CSU is a land-grant university, meaning the campus is federal land where weed is illegal. You can carry cannabis products (as long as it’s less than 2 ounces) and paraphernalia pretty much everywhere else in the state (except for national parks and other federal lands), but be cautious where you choose to light up.

Also, like in every legal state, Colorado dispensaries will always accept cash; some will take debit cards or have an ATM but cannot accept credit cards. This all circles back to the Controlled Substances Act, which makes cannabis illegal at a

federal level. Since banks are federally regulated, they cannot process transactions for cannabis businesses even though it is legal in Colorado.

All the stores on this list offer online ordering with a debit card, but delivery is currently not available in Larimer County, so you’ll have to pick up your order yourself.

With that in mind, let’s get to the list.

Basically on campus

Two dispensaries are easily walkable from campus: Verts Neighborhood Dispensary to the west and Elite Organics to the east.

Both of these dispensaries are locally owned and operated.

Verts is a small recreational and medical dispensary on Elizabeth Street just to the west of campus. It sells all the usuals: flower, pre-rolls, edibles, vapes, some beverages and more. The store is smaller than some later on this list, but don’t let that dissuade you from giving it a try.

Elite Organics is a little different, as the dispensary is in the back of Rock ‘N’ Robin’s record store. The menu is more limited than some of the options on this list, but you won’t find the unique record store and

dispensary combo anywhere else in Fort Collins.

“We have a very convenient location for students here at Elite Organics, being right across the street from the eastern part of campus,” an Elite Organics representative said.

They highlighted their selection of local flower, vapes, concentrates and more. Elite Organics also has “a headshop connected to our dispensary, making our business a nice one-stop shop for any stoner’s needs,” according to the representative.

Downtown

Organic Alternatives is located a bit farther from campus in downtown Fort Collins. Its menu is more extensive than Verts but smaller than some shopping mall-sized dispensaries farther away from campus, and it is also locally owned and operated in Fort Collins.

The big dispensaries

Four large dispensaries will require a drive from campus to get to. You’ll get a more comprehensive selection from a bigger store in return for going the distance.

CSU ENSURES YOU’LL BE OUT OF A ‘HIGH’ SCHOOL FOREVER

You might be thinking you’re officially making the transition from a high school to a “high” school, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Colorado’s history with cannabis dates back decades. In 1876, when Colorado officially became a state, cannabis and hemp were legal and commonly used both in medicinal contexts and recreationally. By 1929, following years of dramatic and racist rhetoric about cannabis and those who partook in using it, our state made the possession, distribution and sale of any cannabis a felony.

The word “marijuana” became commonly used in place of cannabis because it sounded Spanish, and lawmakers working to demonize Latine and Hispanic populations hoped the change would make white people avoid cannabis use.

When the hippie movement rolled around in the 1960s, the public perception of cannabis shifted once again, with more individuals softening to the idea of cannabis use now that the laws would majorly affect not just people of color.

By the mid-1990s, the impact of medical cannabis sales and cultivation was in question, with states like California proposing bills to legalize those transactions.

In 1996, California became the first state to amend its constitution to include medical cannabis. Thus, the floodgates had opened, and other states’ lawmakers soon began their own discussions about medical cannabis.

In 2012, Colorado and Washington became the first states to legalize cannabis for recreational use as long as the purchasers and users were over 21 years old.

Larimer County quickly got with the program, and in April 2014, Choice Organics opened its doors as the first recreational cannabis business in the county, outside of the

Fort Collins city limits. The owners had been working as a medical cannabis distributor for three years but expanded their business to include recreational cannabis following the new legalization.

The now well-known FoCo dispensary Flower Power Botanicals quickly followed suit and opened its doors later in July 2014.

Now, in 2022, there are many cannabis shops around Fort Collins.

In fact, Verts Neighborhood Dispensary is located at 1240 W. Elizabeth St., down the road across from Moby Arena on campus.

For those of you coming from out of state, moving to a cannabisloving environment can seem like a time to light up and hang out, but it’s important to remember Colorado State University’s rules about cannabis differ from those in Fort Collins.

Possessing or using cannabis is prohibited on campus, and those who disregard this policy will face University discipline.

Cannabis is still federally illegal, and the Colorado constitutional amendment — amendment 64 — that legalizes the use and possession of cannabis also allows universities like CSU to make its own rules about prohibiting the drug.

Using cannabis underage is also illegal and not just on campus.

5 THINGS TO AVOID AS A 1ST-YEAR IN COLLEGE

Editor’s Note: This is a satire piece from The Collegian’s opinion section. Real names and the events surrounding them may be used in fictitious/semi-fictitious ways. Those who do not read the editor’s notes are subject to being offended.

Up until now, your introduction to college has likely been full of toothy smiles and icebreakers. I’m not here to ask about your major or where you’re from; I don’t care, and I can promise you most people don’t either.

Instead, I’m here to give you some tough love — to instill in you the knowledge that every firstyear college student should know.

Without further ado, here are some things you should avoid at all costs coming into college.

1. Don’t wear your lanyard — anywhere

For some ungodly reason, a mistake I see too often is firstyears wearing their lanyards around their necks. You might as well walk around with a bright, neon sign that says “I’m new here,

and I’m not getting the picture.”

Nothing screams first-year quite like the old-fashioned lanyard.

Keep it in your pocket or your backpack. Eat your lanyard for breakfast for all I care. Just don’t wear it around your neck.

2. Don’t fall in love with the first person you have sex with

Let’s get this out of the way.

If you so choose, there are plenty of opportunities to make your wildest sexual fantasies come true in college. Everyone is horny in college, and finding someone to slap meats with is surely not the biggest challenge you will face during these prime years.

However, if there’s one piece of advice I can bestow upon you bright-eyed and bushy-tailed first-years, don’t fall in love with the first person you have sex with.

Most people look at the college dating scene as a buffet. There are plenty of options, and you’re not just going to eat a plate full of the first thing you try. You want to walk around the restaurant and shoot your shot with the metaphorical sesame chicken.

Protect yourselves, and remember few things are permanent during your college years.

3. Don’t get too messed up at your first party

I get it. You’re in a new place and finally away from your parents.

You have access to new people, new social circles and inevitably new opportunities to experiment with drugs. The opportunity to drink will most certainly present itself if it hasn’t already.

You may think you’re invincible, you may think you can drink vodka like water and you may think your high school years have prepared you and there’s no way you could be leaving the party in an ambulance, but if you don’t pace yourself, all of these nightmares could come true.

4. Don’t be an ass-kisser

I know you’re trying to make a good first impression on your professors, but don’t act like an ass-kisser. You don’t have to laugh at every cheesy joke your professor tells, and you most certainly do not have to delude yourself into thinking your instructor is your friend.

Don’t get me wrong: First impressions mean a lot, and introducing yourself to your professor never fails. It’s also important to remember your professor is a resource, and you shouldn’t be afraid to reach out.

That doesn’t mean you can get too comfortable and start calling your professor by their first name like you’re old golf buddies. Don’t be cringe.

5. Don’t think you won’t go through changes

Remember what I said earlier about experimenting with sex and drugs? College is a time for exploration, be it your personal,

spiritual or political identity.

Here you will learn things that are bigger than yourself, your perspective will widen and you might come out on the other side as a whole new person.

You may be waltzing into your college career with the indefinite future completely planned out, but don’t be surprised if you find your passions change or your priorities shift.

Embrace this change. Be willing to go out of your comfort zone. Join a club (or three), and find out what really interests you — now is the time to do it.

A RAM’S EUROPEAN ESCAPE Studying abroad has been the most incredible adventure of my life. I naively thought I knew what to expect in Swansea, Wales, having previously visited London and several other cities, towns and villages in southern England.

However, there is a noticeable culture shift when you cross the Welsh border — Wales is a country

of quaint villages, castles, rolling hills, lush valleys and stunning natural beaches. It has a unique national culture and heritage that its people are fiercely proud of.

While life moves much slower here than it does in English cities, I was quickly won over by the infamous warmth and kindness of the Welsh people, and I have

felt incredibly welcome since the second I arrived on campus.

To anyone considering studying abroad, my advice is to take the opportunity while you can. Keep an open mind, and throw yourself into experiencing the culture of your host city. You won’t regret it, and you’ll come back with so many stories to tell.

DON’T KNOCK THE DORM EXPERIENCE

First-year move-in is an exciting time that marks the beginning of your college experience, but it can feel stressful for a lot of reasons, and it is OK to feel that stress.

It is likely the first time you are leaving home for an extended period of time, and you might not know anyone at Colorado State University. For out-of-state students, moving to a new state is stressful on its own.

If you are feeling nervous about moving in and making friends, know that everyone else who is moving in is likely feeling the same way you are. It is all part of the experience.

First of all, congratulations on making it this far and committing to Colorado State University. The new class of 2026 may have had an unconventional high school

experience with the COVID-19 pandemic, but now four transformational years in Fort Collins lay ahead.

You will experience more freedoms in college than you have at any other point in your life, and it is a privilege to attend a university such as CSU. The college experience is what you make of it and starts right away with move-in.

As move-in begins, it is important to remember all firstyears are in the same boat. CSU is a large school — with more than 28,000 students on campus, which makes it easy to feel lost in the crowd.

That is why it is important to get involved from the start and really make an effort to find your people.

CSU offers plenty of extracurriculars to students. It may seem daunting to get involved by joining clubs, participating in intramural sports or getting an on-campus job, but the effort will make your time at CSU much more enjoyable.

One of the best and probably the

easiest ways to meet people is during move-in and orientation. Leaving your dorm room door open literally opens the door to meeting the people you will be seeing the most throughout your dorm experience.

Your first year will be a lot more fun if you can get to know them and even become friends with them.

Something as simple as going through the hallway and introducing yourself to everyone starts to build the community on your floor. For better or worse, you are going to have to share the bathroom and shower with everyone, so you might as well get to know them.

Getting to know the people who will be sharing the dorm with you is important in creating community and meeting people in general. Universities are a place of learning and exploration. At no other point in your life will you live in a building with people of the same age and similar interests at the same point in life as you.

While learning in the classroom is certainly important, what you learn outside of the classroom through the people you meet and

interact with will likely teach you more. CSU’s student population in the fall of 2020 was 65% instate students, with 34% being out of state and about 1% being international students.

This diverse population of students is important in shaping CSU’s community and gives students the opportunity to learn

from classmates who come from every part of the country.

When it comes to the college experience, you get out what you put in. Get involved early, and you will start your four years off on the right note.

First and foremost, welcome to Fort Collins. When you first see your life in boxes waiting to be unpacked in a room you now share with a virtual stranger, it can be easy to feel like a small fish in a big pond.

Keeping in mind that you and the rest of your first-year peers are in the same boat is crucial to staying afloat as you adjust to life as a college student and individual.

There is no right way to experience your first year in college. You don’t have to party hard, you don’t have to go out to every event you’re invited to and you do not have to join clubs, but you might surprise yourself once you arrive on campus.

I moved into the dorms the second semester of my first year — after I spent the first half of the year learning virtually. Although my

experience will differ greatly from yours, as I only lived in the dorms for seven weeks before the COVID-19 pandemic, it was the best decision I could’ve made.

I was already behind the curve, with everyone already knowing one another from the previous

semester. After my parents left, I sat alone in my room, knowing the stranger who was to be my roommate would arrive in a few days — someone I’d only met on FaceTime days earlier after her roommate transferred schools.

I must’ve sat for less than five minutes before there was a knock at the door, where I was then met with eight first-years who lived on my floor introducing themselves and asking me to hang out.

I swear I could feel the fear melting away.

Colorado State University is home to more than 28,000 students; you likely will never interact with many of them, so if you feel nervous about branching out of your comfort zone for fear of embarrassment, remember everyone is looking at themselves.

The environment on campus is diverse, unique and inviting. The people you meet in your classes — especially if you stick with your major — will likely pop up in later classes you take throughout the years. Even though it seems daunting, getting the social media accounts or phone

numbers of those you sit next to will help immensely.

If you need it, ask people on campus for help finding your classes. The campus layout will feel foreign for the first month or two, but there are lots of students and staff members who will point you in the right direction and maybe even give you tips about the classes you’re taking or the professors you have.

When your instructors recommend clubs or organizations

to check out, check them out — it never hurts to send an email asking for information, even if you aren’t fully committed to joining anything. This is how I found The Collegian, and first-year me could never have imagined now being on the editors’ team.

The culture of campus likely varies greatly from that of your high school. You’ll meet people of all ages, backgrounds, identities and more, and there’s no weird social hierarchy when you’re in a class of a few hundred people.

Explore everything: Look at the beautiful art all over campus and inside the buildings, spend a day reading on The Oval and enjoy your time at CSU — these next four years will fly by. Use that little fish feeling to your advantage.

It’s OK to cry alone in the dorms (trust me, it’s a rite of passage), and it’s OK to be afraid of the unknown variables in your future, but know Rams take care of Rams, and we all have your back. See you on campus!

For most of Colorado State University’s history, the Rams have long been considered a football school. Some of the Rams’ legends of the highest tier were part of this program. Greats such as Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Jack Christiansen, legendary head coach and Athletic Director Harry Hughes and recent Super Bowl LV champion Shaquil Barrett are just a few names that have painted CSU history on the gridiron.

RAM ATHLETES STAY BUSY, PRO DENVER SPORTS WIN OVER SUMMER

What a special summer it has been for Colorado State University athletics and professional sports in Colorado.

Two elite athletes from different CSU sports were drafted over the summer onto professional teams, while other elite athletes who still attend CSU struck deals in the name, image and likeness space. In professional sports in the Denver area, a major championship was won for the first time since the 2015-16 Denver Broncos.

Next-level Rams

Two Ram legends ended their CSU careers over the summer and accomplished their wildest dreams.

Trey McBride — winner of the 2021 John Mackey Award, given to the most outstanding tight end in college football — was taken in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft by the Arizona Cardinals on April 28 with the 55th pick.

It was a surprise to many that McBride fell to the second round, given that he was arguably the most well-rounded tight end in the draft.

Despite falling so far in the draft, he was the first tight end selected

on draft weekend.

Star basketball forward David Roddy entered the 2022 NBA draft with more questions than answers. Many of the question marks surrounding the unique prospect centered around when he would be selected.

Right before the 23rd pick was announced, Roddy was not listed as one of the 10 best remaining players up to that point. Then, with the 23rd pick, Roddy became the first CSU basketball player to be drafted to the NBA since 2013.

He was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers, who traded the rights to Roddy to the Memphis Grizzlies.

Roddy played in a Grizzlies jersey for the first time during the NBA Summer League, when he averaged 13.6 points and 4.9 rebounds over seven games.

Colorado sports

For the first time since the 201516 Broncos, Denver sports fans got to witness a home team championship in major professional sports. The Colorado Avalanche won the Stanley Cup in a finals matchup against the two-time defending Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning. The series went to six games, and the Avalanche

won 2-1 at Tampa’s home stadium, securing the rights to lift Lord Stanley.

On the quest to win the Cup for the first time since the 2000-01 season, the Avalanche were the No. 1 seed entering the postseason. In the playoffs, they only lost a total of four games — two against the St. Louis Blues and two against the Lightning.

They swept both of their first-round series and the conference finals against the Nashville Predators and the Edmonton Oilers, respectively.

Broncos fans got a first glimpse of their new superstar quarterback in action. Russell Wilson, whom the Broncos acquired back in March, threw the ball in a blue and orange uniform for the first time on July 27, when official team training camp began. Camps have always been open for the public to watch in person, but this season’s camp garnered one of the largest crowds in recent history.

The Denver Nuggets made a roster move of their own over the summer.

One of the last remaining pieces the Nuggets need for a championship run (once Michael Porter Jr. and Jamal Murray are healthy, of course) is a wing player who is capable on defense.

Name, image and likeness

July 1 marked one year since NIL rules began to allow college athletes to make money in exchange for their name, image and likeness.

Since then, NIL deals involving CSU athletes have been few and far between. However, they’ve been busy over the summer.

Rams basketball star point guard Isaiah Stevens started the summer off inking a partnership with DeVore Sports Group, according to his Instagram announcement May 2.

Just 11 days later, on May 13, Stevens announced his first NIL deal with FanBasis, allowing fans to connect with Stevens through live experiences such as video games and FaceTime.

Soon-to-be star quarterback Clay Millen also inked a partnership with Hal Mumme & Associates, an NIL marketing agency. In addition to this signing, Millen entered a partnership with Krazy Karl’s Pizza and the 1310 KFKA radio station, where he will make appearances on the appropriately named Clay Millen show starting in August.

WHAT TO KNOW FOR CSU FOOTBALL’S 2022 SEASON

After winning just three games and finishing on a six-game losing streak last season, excitement has been restored as Ram football fans await a team with a new look this season. With the 2022 Colorado State University football season right around the corner, here’s what to know about this year’s team.

The schedule

The CSU Rams will kick off the season Sept. 3 with a tough away matchup against the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, before returning to Fort Collins for their Sept. 10 home opener against Middle Tennessee State University.

The team will then travel to Pullman, Washington, to take on Washington State University Sept. 17 before concluding nonconference play at home with an orange out against Football Championship Subdivision California State University, Sacramento on Sept. 24. It’s a challenging slate of nonconference games, with all four opponents having winning records in 2021.

After a bye week, Jay Norvell’s Rams will open conference play against familiar faces, taking on the University of Nevada, Reno on the road Oct. 7. They’ll return to Canvas Stadium to face defending conference champions Utah State University for Homecoming Weekend Oct. 15. The schedule then brings the University of Hawaii to Fort Collins Oct. 22 before sending CSU on the road to play Boise State University Oct. 29 and San Jose State University Nov. 5.

The annual Border War rivalry game against the University of Wyoming will take place in Fort Collins this year; the Rams will try to take the Bronze Boot back Nov. 12 after losing it in Laramie, Wyoming, last year.

The next week, the Rams will travel down to Colorado Springs with the goal of beating the United States Air Force Academy for the Ram-Falcon Trophy for the first time since 2015.

The regular season will conclude Nov. 25 against New Mexico University at Canvas Stadium.

The coaching staff

To the relief of most CSU fans, the coaching staff was completely overhauled in the offseason.

Just over a week after Norvell’s Nevada team ended former head coach Steve Addazio’s time at CSU with a blowout 52-10 defeat, the Rams hired Norvell to replace Addazio. Associate head coach and quarterbacks coach Matt Mumme, offensive line coach Bill Best and wide receivers coach Chad Savage are just some of the many coaches and personnel who followed Norvell from Nevada.

CSU also added some experienced coaches from other schools. Special teams coordinator Tommy Perry, who won the 2021 Conference USA championship with the University of Texas, San Antonio and defensive coordinator Freddie Banks, who helped lead Montana State University to the 2021 FCS National Championship game, are two such coaches looking to replicate their success at Colorado State.

The offense

Just like the coaching staff, the team’s offense will be full of new personnel. Todd Centeio, last year’s starting quarterback, transferred to James Madison University in the offseason. This year’s quarterback room is about as young as it can get — all four quarterbacks on the roster are freshmen. The likely starting quarterback, redshirt freshman Clay Millen, was a four-star recruit by 247Sports before redshirting last year at Nevada.

At running back, redshirt senior A’Jon Vivens and fifth-year David Bailey will return from last year.

Vivens, who is a former wide receiver, could carve out a role as a receiving back in Norvell’s pass-heavy offense.

The team also added Nevada transfer Avery Morrow, whose career-long rush of 42 yards came against CSU in 2021.

In the wide receiver room, seniors Ty McCullouch and Dante Wright, the top Ram receivers returning from last year, will be joined by a pair of Nevada transfers: senior Melquan Stovall and junior Tory Horton. Mekhi Fox, who committed to CSU after decommitting from the University of California, Los Angeles, headlines a talented group of freshman receivers.

It won’t be easy to replace dominant tight end McBride, but redshirt freshman Tanner Arkin will have the chance after being named to the 2022 Mountain West Conference preseason all-conference team. The offensive line is another spot where transfers will likely make a big impact, with players such as Nevada transfers Gray Davis and Jacob Gardner poised to have starting roles.

The defense

The defense won’t be overhauled quite like the offense, but there are still a number of additions. On the defensive line, senior end Mohamed Kamara will continue to start after a quality 2021 season. Rutgers University transfer CJ Onyechi is a veteran choice to replace Scott Patchan at the other end position. The linebacker position won’t see much change — last year’s starters Cam’Ron Carter and Dequan Jackson will return as crucial members of the defense.

In the secondary, there will be some new faces in starting roles. Nevada transfer Angel King, University of California, Berkeley transfer Chigozie Anusiem, University of Northern Colorado transfer Greg Laday and City College of San Francisco transfer D’Andre Greeley will all likely see playing time alongside returning secondary members.

The bottom line is: Between a completely revamped offensive system and quality additions across the board, Ram fans have good reason to be excited for this season.

Colorado State University is back in full swing as the student population returns to campus, but more excitingly, Moby Arena and Canvas Stadium are waiting to be filled up once again.

For first-time CSU students or returning Rams who need a refresher, here are some tips and tricks for having an enjoyable experience as the green and gold athletes take on the new season.

Like most online tickets, you should have them ready on your phone as you arrive at the game, and security will let you in.

The things you need to know for logistics at Colorado State’s arena events are simple: No outside food or drinks, no drugs — which mostly pertains to weed and tobacco — and if you’re bringing a bag, make sure it’s a clear one.

Be prepared for metal detectors, and always bring your RamCard to ensure you’re not a University of Colorado Boulder Buffalo coming to ruin the fun.

In the arena

Once you’ve made it to your seat and finally get to see the Rams do their

magic, there are a few things to be aware of if you want to maximize your experience.

Like any sporting event, expect lines to be long in between periods, and bring a few extra dollars, as concessions can be a bit pricey. However, if you’re 21 and want a drink faster than everyone else, look for the blue drink buckets in between the main concessions, as they can get you in and out before the next quarter.

As a side note, any sport other than the ones played at Moby and Canvas are usually free, and all the info for them can be found on the CSU Athletics site.

The most commonly heard chants you need to know are the CSU Fight Song, the 3-point shot count and the “proud to be a CSU Ram” chant. If you’re completely unaware of these anthems, you’ll learn them quickly at any game.

Otherwise, show up in your CSU gear — unless there’s a specific theme, which you’ll see on the athletics schedule. Now enjoy your time as a Ram fan, and cheer on the green and gold!

SCRAPPED BRINGS ZINES, SUBCULTURE DOCUMENTATION BACK TO NOCO

Just like fashion trends and reruns of “Friends,” elements of life from the 1990s are making a comeback in Fort Collins’ local music scene.

For the last six months, fans of Fort Collins artists, local punk rock and hardcore musicians and visual media have embraced Scrapped Magazine, an independent, monthly “zine” that operates under the banner of nonprofit Blast N Scrap.

The idea for Scrapped Magazine began around this time last year, when former Collegian reporter Max Hogan interviewed Michael Gormley (who is referred to by most as “Blasti”), the founder and executive director of Blast N Scrap, for a story about the nonprofit. Hogan said they had enjoyed working on the arts and culture desk at The Collegian and wanted to see more people covering local music in the area.

“I brought (the idea) up to Blasti, and he was immediately on board,” Hogan said. “Blast N Scrap is an organization that already works with local musicians and artists, so they were happy to include me under the umbrella of that.”

Scrapped aims to be more than just a platform for coverage of the local music scene — the publication allows local, young artists, writers and photographers a welcoming space to share and improve on their work while documenting a unique and thriving subculture in Northern Colorado.

“For me, it helps me really reflect and be, I think, sometimes more present and get more excited about things,” Hogan said of working on Scrapped, “and really just kind of

step back and realize what a great thing local music and art really is and how awesome it is to be part of the community where people are making great music and great artwork.”

Early on in the idea process, Hogan brought their idea up to Maddy Erskine, last year’s arts and culture editor at The Collegian. Because of their previous experiences, Erskine took on leading Scrapped’s writing desk, and Hogan handled coordination and administrative duties alongside design.

Hogan then recruited Maxwell Hendrickson, a local photographer, as the head of photography, and the zine started to fall into place.

Gormley said the zine is the first Blast N Scrap program that has been able to work completely by itself.

Thanks to the nonprofit, the zine is sustained by a modest budget and otherwise operates independently.

“They’re on the ball,” Gormley said. “I don’t think I’ve ever had a team come and do their research the way that they did. … Their eyes were already on, ‘I’m going to see if I can turn this into a legitimate business within the nonprofit parameters,’ and they were good at it.”

The Scrapped team puts out each edition on the first Friday of every month and usually prints around 30 to 40 copies using Erskine’s printer.

Scrapped is available to purchase for $4.50 per copy at Blast N Scrap shows, through a subscription (at a discounted price) or by messaging the zine creators on social media.

Scrapped operates through the work of volunteers, who get paid about $10 per assignment, and Scrapped also accepts submissions of art, photos, poetry and more.

Hendrickson said some volunteers or people who want to submit art to the zine have said they’re afraid because they think their work isn’t good enough or “cool enough” for it, but “it’s not as scary as people make it out to be.”

“I don’t see why there needs to be an intimidation factor because I’m a hobbyist photographer that still works at Trader Joe’s on the side,” Hendrickson said. “I’m not some dude that’s for Rolling Stone or anything.”

“We just want to support your art,” Erskine said.

Erskine said the zine is really special to them — and everyone involved — because of how connected to history it can be.

“I feel like magazines are a really cool way to keep track of history, and it just feels really cool to be a part of something that’s almost like writing your own history,” Erskine said.

Zines have always been a part of the Fort Collins punk scene, Erskine said, especially in the ‘90s, and it’s something they hope will continue even if the original creators all need to move on from it.

“We decided that this is something we want to be passed down from generation to generation,” Erskine said. “We’d love for Scrapped to stay alive beyond us and always be something for the community. Everyone will always have some outlet if they want to show their creativity. … We just want everyone to feel like they have a voice, especially with our Blast N Scrap community.”

Whether you’re in dire need of a quick pick-me-up or you want a mediocre excuse to leave campus, I personally find coffee shops are a great solution. To kick off the new school year (and possibly a new caffeine reliance), here are my top picks for the most cozy and delicious coffee shops within walking distance of our main campus.

1. Mugs

With its convenient location across from The Oval, Mugs is a great option for a quick coffee outing. Their specialty latte menu may leave you tempted to try a new coffee every time, especially with their unique names, such as the Big White Whale. Even when you may not be in search of coffee, they have the best sweet and spicy chai tea in town.

If you are feeling adventurous, their second shop is located in Old Town on the corner of South College Avenue and Olive Street.

Both locations are great places to meet with friends or even make new ones.

2. Alley Cat Cafe

By combining the love of coffee and art, Alley Cat Cafe is an ideal place for both creative inspiration and a great cup of joe. Their decorated ceiling tiles, art-covered walls and tiny table lamps create a cozy atmosphere for studying or chatting with your favorite humans. If their coffee menu doesn’t do it for you, they have a uniquely vast loose leaf tea selection to choose from. Their workers typically play great music, and the cafe stays open until 11 p.m. — perfect for the average night owl college student.

3. Lima Coffee Roasters

If the large, white letters displaying the word “coffee” across their windows doesn’t sell you, their immense amount of seating will.

Lima Coffee Roasters provides a more modern appeal than some other coffee shops you’ll find in Old Town. While their menu is rather modest, their ambient neon sign and bright interior might convince you to stay a while. I find it the perfect place to set up your laptop and headphones for a productive study session — or to take cute pictures for your socials with friends. Don’t worry: We all do it.

4. Starry Night Espresso Cafe

This cozy shop near the heart of Old Town attracts more than just coffee lovers. While Starry Night Espresso Cafe has a variety of brewed beverages, they are also known for their tasty baked goods and cakes. Their weekly rotated bakery menu will have you on the lookout for new favorites.

When dining in, this homey shop provides classic ceramic mugs and couch seating if you’re there at the right time.

5. Everyday Joe’s Coffee House

While this is a coffee spot I personally haven’t been to, I have only heard great things that urge me to go. Everyday Joe’s Coffee House is a welcoming nonprofit that is run by volunteers to keep the coffee brewing and the art on its walls in Old Town. This shop is known for hosting community events, art installations and even concerts for the community. Overall, it’s a great place with an even greater purpose.
