5 WAYS TO SPRINGIFY YOUR HOME Winter got you down? Winter blues, or seasonal affective disorder (SAD), is thought to be common.

There are things that you personally can do to fight the blues – such as keeping active, getting outside during the natural daylight, and staying warm.

But there are things you can do around your house as well to battle the shorter days and cold weather that comes in winter. Bring a little spring into your home long before the season arrives with these few simple tricks:

Set a flower budget

While it’s certainly not a necessary expense, adding an arrangement of fresh flowers to your home weekly might be well worth the mood-boosting value they bring. Opt for your local supermarket instead of the florist and stick with brightly colored mums, carnations and daisy to keep the investment low. Or up the springtime vide with a bouquet of pastel colored tulips.

Start your veggies from scratch

Make a small investment in a few indoor potting supplies and start your tomato and other vegetables from seed this year. Choose a sunny window and watch them sprout. By the time the weather is ready for them outdoors, they’ll be strong enough to plant.

Get some plants

However, before making any purchases, take a little time to look up flowers that do well in the winter months. Even if you’re keeping them inside, flowers that require lots of light might not do so well during the shortened days of winter, and there’s nothing worse than flowers that wilt right away. If you’re looking to just add a vase or two of flowers, go with a variety that tends to last a long time like mums or carnations.

Like flowers, plants will also help boost your mood, but will last much longer than cut flowers. However, since its winter, choose some of the easier to care for varieties that don’t require a lot of light or water, such as succulents and Chinese evergreens. However, since a living plant will last much longer, make sure the one you pick will also fit into your eventual spring and summer décor. If the plant fits, but its container doesn’t, you can always repot the plant come spring.

Trick your senses

There’s no law that says scented seasonal candles must be used in said season! Use the powerful sense of smell to make you feel like spring, even if the weather outside says otherwise.

Try a lilac, hyacinth or rose scented candle, or take it a step further and light candles that smell like the beach or warm-weather fruits like peaches or watermelon.

Force bulbs

If you can’t wait to see those first harbingers of spring pop up through the ground outdoors, plant some bulbs in a few pots around the house and watch them sprout and bloom long before the calendar turns to spring.

There is also no decorating rule that says you must wait until spring to replace your heavy drapery with your airy sheers. Doing so will instantly brighten your mood by letting more natural light and sunshine in. Some people find that using a dawn simulator - a bedside light, connected to an alarm clock, that mimics a sunrise and wakes you up gradually – can also brighten your mood.

By taking these few simple steps, you’ll be feeling like spring in no time!

Spruce Up Your Laundry Room

When you’re stuck inside the house this winter with not much to do, you might be wishing that there was a home improvement project that you could complete – but what? Work on the exterior is probably not going to happen, and tasks like painting might require some windows open. But one area of your home that could probably use some sprucing up is your laundry room.

And the great thing is, many of these practical tasks can be easily knocked out this winter!

Consider the following tips: Add a countertop.

Add shelving.

If you have a front-loading washer or dryer, you can add a countertop above them to create the look of a larger space. At the same time, you’ll have a smooth flat surface for folding your laundry or pretreating stains.

Avoid shelving that can make an already cramped laundry room feel claustrophobic. If you’re small on space, don’t add a cabinet or something that will take up even more. If you need shelving, consider the thin, wired variety. Alternatively, try hooks to hang your ironing board, or a pegboard if you need space to hang clothes. Save even more space by mounting a fold-out ironing board with an upper shelf to store your iron higher up on the wall. Just make sure the iron has room to cool down.

Set aside drying space.

Provide space for drying by installing a tension rod – just like you would use to hang a curtain or shower curtain.

When you pull clothes from the wash or dryer, place them on hangers, and hang on your rod to air dry, or prepare to put away. Once everything is dry, you can easily transfer them back to your closet. Then take down the rod and tuck it away.

You can further expand your drying space by attaching drying racks to your walls that fold out when needed.

Another potential storage option is to install pedestal drawers directly underneath your washer and dryer to place cleaning supplies, extra towels or anything that can stand to get a little warm from the dryer.

Other quick ways to spruce up your laundry room are to add storage bins or baskets for detergents, dryer sheets and the like; swap out cabinet door handles and knobs for new; and if you have a window, add new drapes. There’s lots of possibility!

Home buying can be stressful enough.

When you’re in the market for a new home, there are many factors in the process that can be worrisome and even a pain.

And if you have children, it’s one of the major considerations of your home buying process and can add to the stress.

Families with children under the age of 18 are confronted with a unique set of needs that play out in the home-buying and -selling process. Those include: A larger home. Buyers with children tend to purchase larger homes than their childfree counterparts. The average buyer with children under 18 purchases a 2,100-squarefoot home with four bedrooms and two bathrooms, while the average buyer with no children chooses a 1,750-square-foot home with three bedrooms and two bathrooms.

Both groups prefer a single-family, detached house.

Factoring in schools. The quality of a neighborhood school district is very important to buyers with children, while it probably isn’t much of a consideration to those without. In addition to the schools themselves, convenience and proximity to them is important as well.

Childcare. Childcare expenses can certainly delay the process of buying a home. Those expenses also have an impact on the buying process, forcing buyers with children to make compromises on the house they purchase, whether it’s the size of the home, the price of the home or the condition of the home.

You may have to sell if your family grows.

Families with children are also more likely to sell their homes as they outgrow their current home – whether it be from having more children, or children growing up and needing more space.

And if you sell, you might have to sell more quickly. Urgent is the word that most often describes the selling situation of sellers with children. If you must enroll a child in a new school, or only have the summer to move, major decisions and moves will have to be made at a much faster pace.

Having children is wonderful, and it’s exciting to move into a new house that your family can call home. But it’s important to consider these factors during your search and when planning so that everything can go as smoothly as possible.

Do you have a lot to clean this summer and not a lot of time to do it? Consider pressure washing (also known as power washing). Pressure washers aren’t just for cleaning your home’s exterior before painting or getting gunk off the roof – they can be used to clean much more. While not cheap, you can purchase or rent one, or reach out to a local pressure washing service to do it for you.

Clean patio furniture. Has your deck or patio furniture built up pollen or grime this summer? Forget the scrub brush, soapy water, and elbow grease and make quick work of cleaning wood and iron furniture with a pressure washer. Just don’t spray too close. See that the washer tip is held a few feet away – otherwise it can strip paint or other finishes.

Banish weeds and dead plants. If you have deep-rooted weeds or dead grass entrenched between pavestones, slate tiles, or concrete cracks in your yard or on your patio, don’t bust your knees bending down to pull them out or risk spraying harmful chemicals. Blast them with a pressure washer to remove weeds right down to the root.

Restore the shine to glass. Remove the film and stains that accumulate on outdoor glass tables or windows with your power washer, making it sparkle like new again.
