Orbi An Interactive Lamp Designed for Relaxation

INTRODUCTION project background As a group the project task was to develop a system concept for the gallery space for the School of Industrial Design at Carleton University.

Currently, the gallery is treated as a multipurpose storage and presentation space. As a class we found that the space lacked a purpose and could benefit from a redesign.

By brainstorming and conducting research on the gallery space and the School of Industrial our group found that the School of Industrial Design lacked a designated space for students to step away from schoolwork and relax. The group system concept was relaxation and transformation. The main goal of this system was to create a space that helps students relax so that they can regenerate their creativity.

Once the group concept was decided each member was responsible for developing an element to support the system’s goal. I focused on lighting design for my element This report will outline the design process of my concept.

CREATIVE PROCESS Initial ideation

EARLY IDEATION Sketches Initial inspiration and exploration As a group we agreed that our elements would share an association to nature.

Meaning that the materials used would be natural and the symbolism behind the design would link back to nature. For most of the initial ideation sketches nature was a main inspiration. The sketches (to the right) mainly focused on possible physical shapes or concepts of how the lighting fixture would look.

Main areas of interest during this stage were hanging light fixtures, interactive wall panels with back lighting, and smaller interactive table lamps.

The pieces hanging from the ceiling were meant to spark the same sense of relaxation that comes from looking at a sky full of clouds or stars. The intent was for the user to look up towards the light as a gentle reminder to look upwards to the future.

The interactive wall panels were meant to be a piece that the user could rearrange and interact with when they enter the gallery space. Moving the pieces would act to encourage movement and stepping away from their work, leading to a possible spark of creativity.

The interactive table lamps were meant for simple single person interactions to distract the user from their stress and allow them to take the time necessary to calm down.

PHYSICAL IDEATION Quick protoypes In addition to sketching initial ideas quick small models were made to explore some possible design directions. (images to the right) This phase was used to evaluate three possible concept directions.

The first two images to the right are models of hanging light fixtures: both using rotation. The first inspired by the way the leaves of a willow tree hang downwards and gently sway in the breeze. Instead of leaves the fixture is made up of bars of light that shine downwards gently rotating. The second light fixture consists of square rings with light strips along the inner edges of the rings. In this concept the user can change the colour of the light.

This feature was added because studies have found that lighting changes the ambiance and perception of spaces. (Song & Yamada, 2019) The intention behind these designs were to encourage relaxation using changing colors and the rhythmic motion of rotation. However, their designs ignored the fact that the colour change feature could distract other people in the room.

The third prototype (bottom left) was an interactive table lamp; the user can change the intensity of the light by rotating the top cube. As shown in the final image (bottom right) I tested out the possible mechanism for the lamp. Stacked cubes were used because they linked to the idea of stability of stones in nature.

FURTHER RESEARCH Exploring interactivity & researching lighting design After making the previous prototypes more research was necessary. By looking through two books about lighting design, (see images to the right) a better understanding that proper luminaires work with the light instead of focusing on the shape of the product. Both books touched on the different types of lighting used in spaces and this led to the realization that the lamp is intended for individual interaction. A lamp for ambient lighting that emits a soft glow in the room to promote calm and act as gentle reminder to take a moment to calm down.

In addition to looking at lighting design books I looked at existing interactive lighting fixtures, such as KOLO (to the left) by Pani Jurek a circular light that changes intensity while the user moves the outer circle making the sand in the light move. This design allows for continuous interaction, which differs from the previous ideas where the main interaction was a different way of turning the light on and off.

At this stage my approach to incorporating an interactive element to my interactive lamp changed drastically (see sketch to the right). The new design direction for the interactive lamp is inspired by an armillary sphere (see image to the right). An armillary sphere is used to measure the orbits of objects in the sky; the inspiration came from the motion of the spheres.

DEFINITIVE DIRECTION concept development With the inspiration of the pivoting motion of an armillary sphere the definitive design direction was based on components of previous design ideas.

The first cardboard prototype, in the first image, acted as a rough idea o how the rings would rotate in the final lamp design.

A second model, shown in the second image, was made to find out how the pivot mechanism works and learn how the lamp would be assembled.

The models shown in the bottom two images were used to gauge how electrical components would fit in the rings of the lamp. The two models differ because of the way that the battery is oriented making the ring thicker or thinner depending the orientation.

SCALE MODEL Making the model Using the previous prototypes, a template for the scale model was made.

For the scale model layers of eight-inch birch plywood were laser cut and glued together to make the lamp.

As the pieces dried, they needed to be taped down to avoid any sliding.

Copper coated steel welding rods were used for the pivots since the copper coating is conductive. Due to the design of the lamp’s rings a naked wire touching the pivot pin can connect the circuit of the given ring to the overall circuit of the entire lamp while allowing the individual rings to rotate freely.

As the electrical wiring was being placed the connectiveness of he current was tested, as shown the in the bottom left image. Once the electrical components were in place the final layer was placed.

SCALE MODEL Design rational Orbi is an interactive lamp for ambient lighting; it is meant to emit a soft comforting glow to act a gentle reminder to step away in order to call down when faced with the stress.

The Square shape was kept because it allows for the lamp to stand up and it is linked to the idea of stability and balance found in nature. The rings gradually grow to mimic the how ripples are formed in water. Finally, the rotational motions inspired by an armillary sphere because of the greater connection to the world around us and how like the current running through the lamps’ rings we are all connected to something much bigger.

TECHNICAL ADVANCEMENT Areas of refinement

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS Sketches The current design for Orbi leaves room for improvement. Currently the lamp has trouble standing on its own. Currently the design for the scale model Orbi needs to be plugged in to turn on and doesn’t have anything covering up the internal wiring. The current location of the plug is inconveniently located on the side of the middle ring.

To refine the design of Orbi some ideas were explored through sketching. For the lamp itself to give it more stability the rings will be thickened, wireless charging and a power button will be integrated into the outer ring of the lamp. Internal components will be covered by lantern paper and interior supports will be added.

In addition to improving the design of Orbi a charging base will be used to increase stability and allow for an easy charging system.

In the sketches to the right possible forms for the base are explored while looking at how the necessary components can be housed in the base.

A concept for a discarded possible improvement involved hanging the lamp up however, this would interfere with the ease of access of the current design. Another concept was a base that can stand Orbi on its corners and its edges except with this design the wireless charging would be less effective, and the angled orientation could lead to knocking Orbi over.

DEFINITIVE DIRECTION Charging base design The charging base have a slot for the lamp to rest in will it stands or charges. The wireless charging pad removes the need for a cord on the lamp. The charging base is powered by USB cable.

DEFINITIVE DIRECTION Lamp design For increase in stability the outer rings of the lamp have been thickened.

Wireless charging and a power button have been incorporated into the outer ring of the lamp. The internal components are sealed away by the lantern paper to diffuse the light from the LEDs.

MATERIAL AND MANUFACTURING Rational In order to follow the group system design aesthetic, the body of the lamp and the base will be made of Eastern Spruce, because it machines well and has reasonable glue holding capabilities. (Leeuw, 2009) these are important factors for the manufacturing method is the use of CNC machines to carve the parts. CNC was chosen because this method of production allows to intricate detailed parts to be accurately made without human error.

Like the rings for the lamp the base is also made up of two halves that are machined and glued together. A non-toxic wood glue will join the parts and the lantern paper along the top and bottom edges to cover the interior of the lamp’s rings. Since LED lights last averagely 10 years their lifespan should suit the span of the product.

Giving he intricacies of the electrical wiring the production scale for this lamp would be on the smaller scale.

REFLECTION furture improvements Overall, this project was an enjoyable and educational design experience.

The current “final” design of Orbi is good however, there is always room for more improvement. In the future it would be ideal to develop the base concept that would allow the lamp to stand on its corners. In addition, the next model could have a tighter pivot joints so that the lamp can rest in the orientation that the user gave it. Finally, I would like to further develop this concept so that it fits better with the group system design or could be sold as a real product online.
