Works underway on major road rehabilitation program Wagga Wagga City Council has embarked on its major program of civil works for the repair, rehabilitation and renewal of several key connector and heavily used roads in the local government area. The program is being delivered in three separate packages – two by contractors and the third by Council infrastructure and civil works teams. Work commenced at the start of the

new year on the stretch of Boorooma Street, between Farrer Road to Avocet Drive, while road rehabilitation works have also been carried out this week in Arnott Street in Ashmont, and Main Steet in Lake Albert. Manager Transport & Traffic Jamie Harwood advises there will be changes to traffic conditions in Johnston, Church and Cross streets over the coming two weeks due to road works. “Contractors are set to start road rehabilitation works in Johnston Street on Monday (15 January), weather permitting, followed by Church and Cross streets, with the initial stabilisation of each expected to be completed by the end of the first week,” Mr Harwood said. “The new asphalt wearing course will be applied in the week starting Monday 22 January, again weather permitting.” During these works, there will be lane closures which will impact the flow of traffic and roadside car parking availability along these streets. Where possible, parking access will be permitted at the Wagga Beach carpark and Cross Street carpark. “Please allow extra time to find parking if you’re planning to visit the Wagga Beach or Riverside precinct and playground, or
to attend church services or funerals at St Michael’s Cathedral, St John’s Anglican Church or St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church,” Mr Harwood said. “We understand these changes will cause some disruption to the community and apologise for any inconvenience it may cause. “The rehabilitation of these roads is important as it will improve their quality and make them safer and smoother for the driving public.” The works will be carried out between 6am-7pm and will be under traffic control. Also scheduled to start on Monday will be the interim road maintenance works on Gregadoo Road between Plumpton Road and Plunkett Drive. The temporary maintenance works involve rehabilitation of the existing road pavement and sealing the surface to last for approximately 12 months. Students show off their skills with the Civic Theatre Summer Circus Camp The Civic Theatre held a free five-day Summer Circus Camp this week for young people aged 12-18 years, which kicked off on Monday 8 January. The program engaged with nationally renowned Flying Fruit Fly Circus (FFFC) to bring a team of six trainers to teach a range of circus skills including ground acrobatics (tumble, pyramids, movement), aerials, hula hoop, juggling, and manipulation. Manager Civic Theatre Claire Harris says the Civic Theatre team identified circus as an ideal creative form for those aged 12-18 years. “Circus offers every young person an opportunity to enjoy and master difficult skills,” Ms Harris said. “Through introducing simple but recognisable circus skills that are easily mastered and celebrated, the trainers increased the difficulty as interest and focus built throughout the week. “One highlight of the week was a trip to the FFFC Creative Headquarters in Albury to give the participants the opportunity to train in a fit-for-purpose, elite environment, as well as observe the ‘regular’ training and rehearsals of young performers and professionals. “Circus is inclusive, physically active and mentally challenging, using a teach-through-success approach. It inherently celebrates diversity, like a team sport that is non-competitive. “Big people stand on the bottom of pyramids and little people stand on top. There is something for all skills and interests from tumblers or dextrous manipulators, to introverted jugglers and extroverted clowns.” The week wrapped up with a show for family and friends on Friday, celebrating the achievements of the participants. By increasing the difficulty of the skills in the lead up to the performance, participants were encouraged to build an appetite for greater challenges. The program is funded by The NSW State Government through its Holiday Break funding program. “The funding has also allowed the Civic Theatre to offer this program for free to local youth, which opens it up to those who are experiencing significant community and social disadvantage.” For more programs and opportunities, visit civictheatre.com.au/education

Road closures in place as roundabout works commence
A series of four free community events for all to enjoy will be rolled out this Australia Day. On Thursday 25 January from 6pm, our Riverside precinct will host the city’s first 2024 Australia Day community event, ‘Murun-dhu’ – I Live, I Breathe, which will open with a smoking ceremony, followed by family-friendly activities and a concert. This community event has been organised by Mawang Gaway with support from First Nations individuals and organisations, and in partnership with the Australia Day 2024 Community Committee and supported by Wagga Wagga City Council. The Australia Day Awards Ceremony will be held at the Civic Theatre on Thursday 25 January from 7pm. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Dallas Tout said Council was delighted to have received 11 nominations across the categories: Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Environmental Citizen of the Year, and Walk of Honour inductee. “These nominees have worked tirelessly, devoting time and energy into making Wagga Wagga a better place to live for all,” Cr Tout said. “It is wonderful to see so many residents being recognised for the outstanding work they do for our community.” Free general admission tickets to the ceremony are available through the Civic Theatre booking office. On Australia Day, Friday 26 January, residents will have the chance to share in a variety of different events. A free breakfast for the community will be provided at Riverside: Wagga Beach precinct from 7am. At 9am the city will welcome 40 new Australian citizens on the main stage at Riverside: Wagga Beach, where the National Anthem will be performed by finalists in the National Anthem Competition: Shae Sullivan, Lucy Green, and Sophia Eddies. At the conclusion of the citizenship ceremony, residents can take a short walk to the CSU Riverina Playhouse to experience a series of First Nations films, documentaries, and animations with compelling narratives. Road closures are now in place at the intersection of Holbrook Road and Dunns Road due to works to install a roundabout. Traffic to and from the eastern (Lloyd Road) and western (Dunns Road) sides of the intersection is being diverted, with Holbrook Road remaining open to northbound and southbound traffic under traffic control. The Museum of the Riverina – Botanic Gardens site, has a series of holiday activities to help visitors beat the heat this January. With free daily drop-in activities like origami, badge making, scavenger hunts, weekly sun-safe hat making workshops and family friendly tours there’s something for everyone. Free icy poles, water and sunscreen are also available to visitors. Museum Manager Luke Grealy said “We hope that our MoR Summer Holiday Programs will give visitors a fun new way to cool off this summer, while enjoying everything the Museum has to offer.” There are also three new exhibitions at the Museum of the Riverina - Historic Council Chambers site including the Bald Archy Prize 2023 (closing 28 January 2024), Tom Castro: the man who never was, and Lazy Days in Wagga Wagga. Thursday 11 January and will be in effect for the duration of the works, which are expected to take around eight weeks to complete, weather permitting. Director Strategy & Projects Phil McMurray said “this is the third and final stage of the Dunns Road Upgrade project. “The upgrade of the intersection of Dunns Road and Holbrook Road to include a roundabout is necessary to improve safety for motorists, especially once Dunns Road re-opens. During the works traffic west of Holbrook Road (from Dunns Road) is diverted via Currawang Drive and Mirbelia Drive. Traffic east of Holbrook Road (from Lloyd Road) is diverted via Mallee Road, Springvale Drive and Featherwood Drive. There is no access to Lloyd Road or Dunns Road from Holbrook Road, these roads must be accessed via the detours. Dunns Road will remain closed to through traffic between Kunzea Place and the Olympic Highway until the completion of the project.
