2025 Walk of Honour recipients officially unveiled

Two plaques for Wagga Wagga’s 2025 Walk of Honour recipients –recognising First Nations Elders Aunty Dot & Uncle Hewitt Whyman, and the late Zita Denholm – were officially unveiled on Baylis Street on Wednesday 28 May.
The Walk of Honour was established in 1998 and recognises individuals who have made significant contributions to the community of Wagga Wagga.
Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Dallas Tout says he is pleased to see these three pillars of the community honoured as the 42nd and 43rd inductees respectively.
“These plaques are recognition of the recipients’ dedication over their lifetimes to the community,” Cr Tout said.
“Aunty Dot and Uncle Hewitt Whyman are respected Elders of the Wagga Wagga First Nations community, contributing significantly to local cultural, community development, and sporting activities.”
“Their contributions to the community include the establishment of a wide variety of services including the Wiradjuri Childcare Service, Riverina Medical and Dental Aboriginal Corporation, Aboriginal
Legal Service, Wagga Wagga Local Aboriginal Land Council, and ATSIC Binaal Billa Regional Council.”
Aunty Dot and Uncle Hewitt Whyman were announced as the joint 42nd Walk of Honour inductees during Wagga Wagga’s Australia Day Awards ceremony in January. Their plaque was unveiled in front of the Wagga Wagga Civic Centre forecourt.
The late Zita Denholm was represented by members of her family for her Walk of Honour plaque unveiling.
Mrs Denholm began working at Mount Erin Girls’ High School as an English and History teacher in 1975. She reestablished the Mount Erin Orchestra, and organised fundraising concerts to purchase additional instruments.
“Today’s unveiling is a celebration of Zita Denholm’s commitment and generosity, ensuring opportunities for generations of people to fulfill their own dreams and passions,” Cr Tout said.
“Zita also taught Speech and Drama to young children and teenagers and at the 2024 Wagga Wagga Eisteddfod, she was recognised with a perpetual trophy in her name in the Speech and Drama section. She played a pivotal role in establishing
the Riverina Summer School for Strings which has helped shaped the talents of hundreds of students.”
“Zita helped establish the Wagga Horse Trials Club, served as a Zone Pony Club Chief Instructor, and was an active member of the REA Wagga Dressage Club.”
Mrs Denholm was named as the 43rd Walk of Honour inductee. Her plaque is located on the eastern side of Baylis Street, near the entrance to the Myer shopfront.

RECOGNISED AND REMEMBERED: It was a proud moment for family members of the late Zita Denholm, who unveiled the plaque on behalf of Zita - the 43rd Walk of Honour inductee.

Our green bins are giving back to the community
Council is inviting residents to collect free compost made from their own food and garden waste.
The community giveaway is taking place at Gregadoo Waste Management Centre from Thursday 29 May to Monday 9 June, while stocks last.
Since the introduction of the kerbside FOGO service in 2018, the green lid bin has played a vital role in diverting food waste and organic material from landfill. Each year, approximately 12,500 tonnes of green lid bin waste are collected from households across the Local Government Area and processed into high-quality compost.
Council’s Waste Facilities Manager Andrea Baldwin said the compost giveaway is a way to connect residents with the end product of their wastesorting efforts.
“This is about closing the loop; residents contribute to the FOGO system every week, and now they have an opportunity to see, and use, the results of their contribution,” Ms Baldwin said.
“We understand the recent changes to what can go in the green lid bin may take some adjustment, but this giveaway is a reminder that your efforts are making a real difference.”
The compost is produced by EPA licenced commercial composting operator Wormtech and is made locally from food and garden organics collected through the FOGO system.
A stockpile of mature, nutrient-rich compost is now ready for distribution to the community. Residents of our LGA only are invited to collect the product at the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre.
There is a limit of one tonne, or three cubic metres (approx. 6x4ft box trailer), per household.
No bookings are required, but quantities are limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Wagga Wagga City Council’s popular One Tree for Me program is returning for its fifth year of seedling giveaways, with the first event at Henwood Park on Thursday 12 June.
The initiative was launched in 2021 and aims to see 65,000 native seedlings planted throughout our local area over a six-year period.
Environmental Education Officer Christina Reid said Council will hold four free seedling giveaway events this year.

City to host 2025 NSW AusCycling Road State Championships
Wagga Wagga is cementing its place as a key destination for top-level cycling events, with AusCycling this week announcing that the 2025 AusCycling Road State Championships for NSW will take place in the city in August.
The state championships – featuring juniors and masters racing – will be held over three days, from 15 to 17 August 2025.
This key event will provide a prime opportunity for riders to test themselves ahead of the highly anticipated 2025 AusCycling Junior and Masters Road National Championship in Wagga Wagga in September.
In a first for the NSW championships, the event will be held on the same closed-road courses that will host the national titles a month later, offering a unique “curtain-raiser” experience for riders.
“Hosting the NSW State Championships on the same courses as
“We’ll be giving away another 8000 seedlings to the community from June to September because that’s the best time to get your seedlings in the ground,” Ms Reid said.
“We choose different locations for the giveaways each time to try to spread them around so no matter where you live, you’ll be able to get some seedlings.
“All you have to do is show up! You’ll receive a bag containing a small number of seedlings that are native to the local area and suited to the local climate.
“Our One Tree for Me initiative encourages our community to grow the right sort of plants to support native wildlife.
“Whether you have a large property or a small urban block, your own backyard can become an active part of an urban bush corridor that helps native wildlife, and if you do it well, will also beautify the local region.”
One Tree for Me is part of Council’s Biodiversity Strategy: Maldhangilanha 2020-2030, which sets Council’s path towards protecting and enhancing biodiversity in our local area.
In addition to the seedling giveaway, Council also holds community tree planting activities on community land and supports initiatives such as the Schools National Tree Day campaign and National Tree Day.
Ms Reid says Council is full of gratitude to the local community for their strong support for the One Tree for Me initiative,
the National Championships is a fantastic opportunity for our athletes to familiarise themselves with the conditions, terrain and tactical demands they will face at the national level,” said AusCycling’s Nick Hannan.
“It also provides the local community and cycling fans a chance to witness the next generation of NSW talent and seasoned Masters riders compete at the highest level.”
AusCycling has worked closely with Wagga Wagga City Council and Wagga Wagga Cycling Club to ensure both events showcase the region’s outstanding cycling infrastructure and hospitality.
Along with fantastic road courses, the events will use Wagga Wagga’s world class cycling precinct at Pomingalarna Reserve.
Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Dallas Tout is excited about welcoming the state championships to the city in 2025.
“It is yet another feather in Wagga Wagga’s cap when it comes to its reputation as being the City of Good Sports,” Cr Tout said. “Our state-ofthe-art Multisport Cycling Complex at Pomingalarna Reserve is proving to be a great drawcard for this elite level of competition.
“A lot of these riders will be using this event as a lead up to the National Championships, to be held in Wagga Wagga later in September, and we’re looking forward to seeing the riders put their skills to the test on the criterium track.
“With up to 350 participants and
which not only provides free seedlings but also promotes information about locally native plant species.
“This is the second last year of the campaign as next year we are set to meet the target of 65,000 trees,” Ms Reid said.
“So far, we’ve handed out 55,421 seedlings as a result of the campaign, so we are well on track to meet our target!”
The first One Tree for Me seedling giveaway for 2025 will be held on Thursday 12 June from 2pm at Henwood Park, Kooringal, near the children’s playground.
The team will be there until 6pm or until all seedlings are given away.
