Library partners with Hearing Australia to deliver free hearing tests New intersections in store for Pine Gully Road

NEW PARTNERSHIP: (from left) Community Hearing Advisor - Hearing Australia Lauren Mason, Chief First Nations Officer for Playgroups NSW Kellie Murray, and Agile Library Officer Rachael Downes during the visit by Hearing Australia to the Ngurra Hub at Ashmont with Wagga Wagga City Library’s Agile Library Service. Wagga Wagga City Library has established a partnership with Hearing Australia to deliver free hearing tests to residents across the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area throughout February and March. The initiative, which commenced on Monday (5 February), will see Hearing Australia offer free hearing tests for anyone aged over 18 years at various Agile Library sites in suburban and rural villages across the local government area, as well as at the main library site in the Civic Centre. Library Services Manager Christine Bolton said local residents will be able to come along and receive a free 15-minute hearing check, speak with a Hearing Australia consultant about good hearing health and find out information on a range of common hearing issues. “The library is delighted to be partnering with Hearing Australia because we share many of the same values, including fostering community connections, equity and access, and making a positive difference to people's lives through our

programs and services no matter where you live in the local government area,” Ms Bolton said. One in six Australians currently have some form of hearing loss, representing around 3.6 million people. Hearing Australia has provided expert hearing care to Australians of all ages and from all walks of life for more than 75 years. Community Hearing Advisor - Hearing Australia Lauren Mason is excited about partnering with the Agile Library team as they visit our suburbs and rural villages, including Ashmont, Oura, Currawarna, Ladysmith, Humula, Mangoplah and Tarcutta. “I'm enjoying getting out and about in the community, talking to people about their hearing health and where they're up to on their hearing journey,” Ms Mason said. "We're not trying to sell people anything; we just want them to have an awareness of their hearing ability and have the chance to access regular checks.” This week, the Agile Library and

Hearing Australia team visited Oura, Currawarna and the Ngurra Hub at Ashmont, and next week, they will head to Ladysmith and Humula on Wednesday (14 February). For more details on the Agile Library and free hearing tests visits, head to waggalibrary.com.au/whats-on

Wagga Wagga City Council will shortly be issuing a tender for the design and construction of a new roundabout at the intersection of Pine Gully Road and Cootamundra Boulevard, in our northern suburbs. This roundabout will connect with the extension of Avocet Drive that commenced construction last month as Stage 15 of the Estella Heights subdivision development. Director Infrastructure Services Warren Faulkner said the new intersection will be constructed in line with the completion of that stage. “We expect this construction will occur in the second half of this year, because there's still a lot of work to be done in the subdivision before it is complete, such as stormwater, sewer, and electricity,” Mr Faulkner said. “For the Estella Road-Jumbuck Drive intersection with Pine Gully Road, we're proposing to install traffic signals to make it safer for children to cross the road to get to the Estella Primary School. “Council is working with Transport for NSW to gain their approval, as all traffic signals in NSW are managed and maintained by them. “We’re hopeful the connection of Jumbuck Drive to the Pine Gully Road-Estella Road intersection will be completed in the 2024/2025 financial year.” A second roundabout will be constructed at the Pine Gully RoadMuttama Parade intersection when the southern end of the Estella Heights subdivision is developed. The roll out of roads and intersection upgrades in the Northern Growth Area was presented to Council at its Ordinary Meeting of Council on 3 April 2023. The plan was developed as a result of increasing traffic volumes generated by the growth of the Charles Sturt University campus, the construction of the Estella Public School, The Riverina Anglican College and the growth of the suburbs of Estella, Gobbagombalin and Boorooma. The works will include increasing the capacity of intersections and arterial roads providing access to and from these areas, which will include the construction of new roads, roundabouts and the upgrade of existing roads and intersections.

SOLAR SAVINGS: Net Zero Emissions Project Officer Hemendra Chaudhary at the SunSPOT Service Help Desk.

Free resource to help community access solar

Wagga Wagga City Council has recently secured free access for the community to the premium version of SunSPOT, a solar calculator developed by University of NSW and the Australian PV Institute. The SunSPOT tool allows homeowners and small businesses to complete a simple, private and reliable rooftop solar assessment without having to engage with any solar sales companies. Net Zero Emissions Project Officer Hemendra Chaudhary says this initiative allows those interested in solar or batteries to discover how much they could be saving. “This free, accessible tool allows residents to check the suitability of their rooftop and find out what they might save if they install solar in their homes,” Mr Chaudhary said. “Users of the tool will get suggestions for solar systems that will suit their own circumstances and their own roof to get the maximum savings on their bill. “SunSPOT will also assist our community in achieving our net zero emissions target.” To learn more about using the tool, SunSPOT is holding an online webinar on Tuesday 20 February at 11am. Register for the webinar online at events.humanitix.com For those who cannot access the webinar, or need more assistance, Council is holding a ‘Help Desk’ service every Tuesday from 6 February. The Help Desk will be held in the Wagga Wagga City Library’s Learning Space 3 on Tuesdays from 2.30pm – 4.30pm. Book a time and bring along a recent electricity bill. To book a one-on-one Help Desk appointment, please call our Net Zero Emissions Project Officer on 1300 292 442. SunSPOT’s development has been supported by state and federal governments, and the NSW Government is also providing a ‘Swap for Solar’ offer to homeowners currently receiving the Low Income Household Rebate to access affordable, clean energy. Events & Tourism

Traffic changes at Jubilee Park for Junior Touch titles Residents and motorists are advised there will be changes to traffic conditions around the Jubilee Park precinct when the annual NSW Touch Association’s (NSWTA) Junior State Cup Southern Conference returns to Wagga Wagga next week. The premier NSW touch football junior representative event for southern NSW will be held across three days, from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 February. Wagga Wagga City Council Recreation Coordinator Josh Walsh said it is the sixth consecutive year our city will host the event, which is expected to draw a large contingent of players and spectators from across southern parts of the state to the Jubilee Park precinct. “Council has been working with NSW Touch to ensure it is a fantastic and memorable time for everyone who comes along to this major sports event, while minimising the impact on the surrounding residents during the event,” Mr Walsh said. “You will see more traffic and pedestrians on the roads surrounding the precinct, with more than 8000 players and spectators expected to attend the precinct over the three days of the carnival. “We will have lane closures and detours in place on the roads around Jubilee Park so please drive to the conditions and be patient." Red Hill Road will be open to westbound traffic only between the Bourke Street and Glenfield Road roundabouts, while a 40 kilometres per hour speed limit will be in effect along that stretch of road. Council will have traffic management personnel in place at major intersections and signage in the area to assist the flow of traffic,” Mr Walsh said. “We know these changes will cause some disruptions and delays for those travelling through the area, particularly at the peak work and school traffic times, but we hope motorists understand that an event of this size is bringing significant economic benefit to the city.” Detours will be signposted, and motorists are asked to take care in the area as there will be additional traffic and pedestrians around Jubilee Park. LAGOON LOVE: Environmental Education Officer Christina Reid hangs the children's artworks.

Life of the lagoon - art meets environmental awareness

During the recent school holidays a free workshop aimed at primary aged children called ‘Life of the Lagoon’, was delivered, which focused on environmental learning through fun creative activities. Participants were taken on a tour of the Wollundry Lagoon, and then completed an art workshop at the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery including painting and drawing artwork inspired by the Lagoon and Hayden Fowler’s Turtle Island. To celebrate World Wetland Day the artworks were put on display last week in the Civic Centre foyer area and will remain on exhibition until 29 February. Environmental Education Officer Christina Reid said the tour and workshop were an exciting opportunity for young people to learn all about the natural world of the Wollundry Lagoon and its significance to the community. “The Wollundry Lagoon is an important site for the Wiradjuri community as well as many species of native wildlife,” Ms Reid said. “We looked at who lives on both sides of the water in the lagoon – those who live above the water, like birds and possums, and who lives below, like turtles and fish. Art Gallery Programs Officer Astrid Reed described ‘Life of the Lagoon’ as a valuable way to make learning about the environment fun and engaging. “The Art Gallery is passionate about the environment and community collaboration,” said Astrid Reed. “Last year’s program GREEN 2023 was all about engaging with our audience in a conversation about the environment and climate change. Moving into 2024 we are dedicated to continuing this discussion with the community.” The young artists were able to paint and draw their own work that focused on the animals they saw and discussed on the tour, as well as collaborate on a larger project, which is now on display in the Civic Centre foyer.
