Multi-million euro investment taking shape but no public car parking will be an issue

New Courthouse due to open in September By Chris Ashmore chris@letterkennypost.com

Letterkenny’s new multimillion euro courthouse is on course to be in use by the end of September, the Post can reveal. The four-storey building, located on the site of the former leisure centre and swimming pool, is now really taking shape. It will comprise four courtrooms, compared with just two in the existing courthouse on Justice Walsh Road. Significantly, though, the new courthouse will also have extensive office space for the Courts Service and members of the legal profession as well as having enhanced facilities for the public. “We are delighted to report there has been great the

progress on Letterkenny’s new courthouse,” a spokesman for the Courts Service told the Post, adding: “We are aiming for the court to be operational by late September.” What will happen to the existing courthouse is not clear. “The future of the old courthouse will be a matter for the County Council - as we are returning it to them when we vacate it,” the spokesman explained. Last year, controversy erupted following a Letterkenny Post report that highlighted the fact that there are no plans for public parking spaces beside the new courthouse. The Courts Service confirmed that it is not government policy to provide public car parking spaces at such buildings. A spokesman for the Courts
