Ballet National de Paris L’histoire de Manon live from Paris LIVE by satellite from the stage at their home in the spectacular Palais Garnier on Monday, May 18 at 6.30pm, the Ballet National de Paris brings the tragic romance, L’Histoire de Manon to Century Cinemas, Letterkenny. It is a historic performance, as the evening will feature the companys famous star dancer Aurélie Dupont, one of the greatest of modern ballerinas, in her final performance before retirement. The ballet is based on a classic tale from French literature, and moves from the

glamour of Regency Paris to the swamps of Louisiana with plenty of drama in between! Banned on publication in 1731, the original story tells of the lovely Manon and her many suitors. Celebrated for her beauty by wealthy Paris society, she eventually falls from grace, dragging with her the faithful Des Grieux. Here the production features crowded ball scenes and spirited, romantic pas de deux, all set to a selection of music by French composer Jules Massenet (mostly based on his opera ‘Manon’ but also

including the well known ‘Meditation on a theme from Thais’). This production of the ballet was developed by world famous choreographer and former artistic director of the Royal Ballet in London, Kenneth MacMillan. With scenes of murder, gambling, and jealous rage, contrasted with beautiful portrayals of intimacy and romance, along with some of the most beautiful dancing you are ever likely to see on stage, there is plenty in this ballet to keep you on the edge of your seat!
