Crime figures are decreasing in Co Kildare according to the latest Central Statistics Office (CSO) figures but there is still a major drugs problem in Athy that needs tackling according to Supt Martin Walker. Calls for a dedicated drugs squad in Athy to deal with a growing heroin problem have not been met due to lack of resources. Despite a steady allocation of new recruits from Templemore over the last number of years, the number of Gardaí for Co Kildare still remains well below the national average. Supt Walker said: "I don't have the luxury of getting a dedicated drugs unit in Athy, there is a high rate of Garda injuries and attrition in Athy. If I had additional resources, I would set up a drugs squad in Athy." Meanwhile the latest CSO figures show that Naas Garda Station was Co Kildare’s busiest station with 180 reported burglaries in 2018 and Castledermot had the lowest rate of burglaries in 2018. Figures

show that over two burglaries take place in Co Kildare daily. The number of sexual offences committed in Kildare decreased by 21.4% in 2018. Nationally the number of incidents of fraud and related offences rose by 18.4% in 2018, while reported robberies (+11.3%) and sexual offences (+10.3%) continued to rise. The numbers of

homicides (-10.8%), burglaries (-11.5%) and criminal damage offences (-7.2%) decreased in 2018 relative to 2017. The CSO intends, during April 2019, to publish statistics relating to the victims of serious crime incident types such as homicides, assaults and sexual offences. The publication of these statistics is in response to considerable user

demand for such statistics. The analysis of victims will look at characteristics such as the sex of victims, the age at the time an offence first occurred and the time gap between when an offence occurred and when it was reported to An Garda Síochána, so as to provide some context to the reporting of such offences in Ireland.

related to social media regulation. Deputy Lawless said, “It was a welcome opportunity to meet with Mr Zuckerberg today and discuss many of the issues which have been to the fore over recent times. It was particularly helpful to meet with him in relation to my Bill, the Online Advertising and Social Media (Transparency) Bill, and to discuss the progression of legislation aimed at making the internet a safer place for all. “Facebook recently put in place new regulations which seek to provide greater transparency in political advertising. This is a welcome and positive

move especially in the run up to the EU elections in May but I believe it must go further with transparency measures placed on a statutory footing. I agree with Mr Zuckerberg that there is a need for governments to take a more active role and that it can’t be left to social media giants alone to regulate and police the internet. “I put to Mr Zuckerberg that his statements were welcome but needed to be backed up by action. I cited the UK ICO commissioners point re whether they would consider appealing their ďŹ ne for data breaches? I also asked whether they would repatriate the 1.5bn data sets

Also amongst the attendees were Fine Gael TD and Chair of the Oireachtas Communications Committee, Hildegarde Naughton and Green Party leader Eamon Ryan, met with Facebook founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg. The Deputies, who are members of the International Grand Committee on Disinformation and Fake News, discussed their concerns in relation to the regulation of social media, greater transparency in political advertising and the wellbeing of both users and content moderators. They also impressed upon Mr Zuckerberg the need to engage with legislators and updated him on initiatives from our own Communications Committee. Hedge Fire – Garda Appeal

Clane Gardaí are appealing for information on a hedge first at a residence near Hatter’s Cross, on the Clane to Prosperous route. Gardaí confirmed they received an emergency call on March 28 last after 6pm, and that Maynooth Fire Services attended the scene. “A hedge row, extensive cabling and an intercom system were damaged in the incident and we are investigating the motive behind it. If anyone has any information regarding this, please contact Clane Garda Station at 045 868 262” said a member of Clane Gardaí. The family were terrified and are appealing to motorists who may have passed the area on Thursday, and if they had dashcam which might have picked up the perpetrators. Videos alone reached over 350,000 people in March which is great news for any individual or business that wants to promote a corporate video on KildareNow.

Busy for news

It was a busy month for news about a wide range of issues that people want to read about. For example, the most-read article was on a Naas judge

throwing out a murder charge in relation to the death of a man in Athy due to a delay in delivering the Book of Evidence. However the suspect can be re-arrested and recharged in coming weeks. Elsewhere, details around the demolition of a motorway bridge on the M7 last weekend featured strongly

with two entries in the Top Ten Stories. And weather is never far from the headlines as a heavier than expected snow fall on Sunday, March 3 caused chaos on roads with motorists spending hours on the M7 and M4 in the country. The arrival of Danish retailer JYSK in Naas also kept

people checking out KildareNow as did other quirky stories such as a low-flying Russian cargo plane disturbing sleep in north Kildare and a giant rodent - the Coypu which was seen swimming in the Royal Canal and could be carrying diseases harmful to humans. Road traffic issues were also

of concern to readers such as traffic accidents and Gardai checkpoints. And of course, coverage of St Patrick's Day parades around the county also proved popular with readers in March.

7 dogs dead from suspected poisoning on Curragh Plains

By Kim O’Leary Dog owners who walk their pets on The Curragh Plains are being urged to remain cautious following the deaths of several dogs from suspected poisoning in recent weeks. It is understood several dogs became ill after walking near Rathbride Road on the Curragh Plains with 7 dogs reported to have died. Meanwhile, a local vet has confirmed to The Kildare Post that they have seen an alarming number of dogs treated for suspected poisoning symptoms, which includes ‘sudden, heavy panting’ and ‘an upset stomach.’ According to the vet, seven dogs have died although it is not yet known what the poison is, and dog owners are being urged to carefully monitor their pets. Several dog owners have come forward to the Kildare Post that their pets were poisoned following walks on the Curragh. One heartbroken owner said that his dog ‘quickly became unwell’ after a walk on the Curragh last weekend. “He was brought to the vet who said it looked like poisoning and he had to be

Homeward bound! Dog found on train from Sallins to Heuston Station in Dublin By Kim O’Leary It was possibly an unexpected journey for one dog who found himself on a train from Sallins to Heuston on Wednesday. Taking to social media, Irish Rail staff at Heuston Station said that the dog is believed to have boarded the 08:46 Sallins-Heuston train early on Wednesday morning (April 3). The train-hopping pooch is being cared for by staff at Heuston Station in Dublin who have launched an appeal on social media, in the hope of reuniting the dog with its rightful owner, possibly resident in Co Kildare! Dog who travellef on Sallins to Heuston train on Weds am

put to sleep,” he said. Another concerned dog owner, who has lost two dogs to suspected poisoning, said: “Our neighbour’s dog is in the vets a week, trying to clear out the poison. My neighbour is a sheep farmer, he said 6 of his sheep were found poisoned too on the plains.” Meanwhile, Sinn Fein Cllr Mark Lynch said that last summer, dogs were also poisoned on the Curragh. He said: “It

highlights again the need for proper regulation and change to correctly manage this sensitive landscape and special area of conservation. It is totally unacceptable that family pets are being poisoned on public land and whoever is responsible should have a good look at themselves.” “A pet in many cases is part of the family. The Curragh Plains are a public area and poisoning wildlife or family

pets is not acceptable. Again the department of defence (not the military) and the minister are accountable as they are allowing animals to be poisoned on public lands they mismanage,” added Cllr Lynch. Kildare County Council said that it couldn’t comment on the matter and Gardaí in Newbridge say they have not received any criminal complaints.

Locals urged to take part in 'Lily White' Clean-Up Day Local communities across Co Kildare are urged to take part in Kildare's Lily White Clean-Up Day on Saturday. Kildare Co Council is encouraging people to take pride in their local areas and is aspiring to be the cleanest county in Ireland. Residents' associations, primary and secondary schools, tidy towns groups and individuals are being invited to get invovled. The Council is hoping it will be the biggest clean up Kildare has ever seen. A Council spokesperson said: "This is a way of getting everybody motivated (including people who mightn't ordinarily get involved in

clean-ups) to clean up part of their area - even if you only have half an hour. "The Council will collect this waste by agreement in the week after this day. "So, to ensure that we get all the collections done, we are asking that people apply by 5pm on Thursday April 4th using the application form to be found in www.kildare.ie/ CountyCouncil/Forms/Environment/." Apart from Lily White Day, the entire month of April is designated as National Spring Clean, so if you can't participate on the 6th, don't worry, there are clean-ups taking place at any time during the month and the removal of

waste can also be organised.

Free Clean-Up Kit

You can get a free clean-up kit if you register for the National Spring Clean, go to www.nationalspringclean. org or phone An Taisce at 01 4002220. Once you have registered you will receive a useful clean-up kit. Local clean-ups are organised in each town and village. For example, Kildare Town Tidy Towns is asking volunteers to meet outside the Heritage Centre at 10am on Saturday.

April, The National Spring Clean encourages communities from across Ireland to tackle the problem of litter in local areas and to see the benefits of a litter-free environment. National Spring Clean is op-

erated by the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce in partnership with Local Authorities and supported by the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment. Over the past 21 years, The National Spring Clean has been focused on the message of the collective responsibility we share in tackling and preventing our national litter problem. By participating in organised clean-ups, groups and individuals of all ages come together to make a meaningful and positive contribution in their own communities.

Kildare’s Megan to perform at McAuley Place on Friday Next by Kim O’Leary Ballymore Eustace native Megan O’Neill is set to perform live at McAuley Place in Naas this Friday, April 5. After a busy month in March where she toured Germany, York, Manchester, Sheffield and the Isle of Man, the Kildare native said she is ‘really exited’ to be playing again locally. Talented American/Altcountry singer Megan O’Neill, 28, is originally from Ballymore Eustace in Co Kildare and she studied psychology at UCD. After university Megan headed to Nashville

to pursue her dream of writing songs and performing on stage. In recent months Megan has been working on her new upcoming album set for release in 2020, collaborating with the acclaimed brothers Joe and Dave Dunwell, who were an integral part of her last album 'Ghost of You' where they were co-writers and backing vocals on fan favourites 'Any Younger' and 'Lost a Love'. Megan will perform live at McAuley Place in Naas this Friday 5 April with doors open from 7.30pm and the show starting at 8pm, with support

from singer Tia Burke. Tickets for the gig are €10 and available from Jam Music Naas; McAuley Place, and Ticketstop.ie. Next up for Megan is a performance at the Ards International Guitar Festival in Belfast on Sunday April 7.

Kildare singer prepares for Saturday’s semi-final of ‘Ireland’s Got Talent’ by Kim O’Leary Co Kildare’s final act left standing in the talent competition ‘Ireland’s Got Talent’, young mum-of-one and aspiring singer Julie McCabe will take to the stage in the third semi-final this Saturday, 6 April. Talented Julie McCabe (30) is originally from Dublin and she is a passionate singer and blogger. She lives in Leixlip, Kildare, with her husband Glen and their three-year old son Max. Speaking to The Kildare Post this week, Julie said: “It’s nerve-wracking and exciting to be on ‘Ireland’s Got Talent’ and to have made it to the semi-final. I was watching the other two semi-finals last weekend and it just surprises you because you don’t know what the audience at home will think, anything can happen. It’s all go for rehearsing at the moment and I can’t wait to get on stage.” Julie has been singing for all of her life, particularly in earnest over the last eight years. “It was my sister who actu-

ally applied for me to go on the show. We’d just found out that our son Max (3) has autism and my sister thought that the competition would give me something positive to do, to occupy my mind. It’s been great for us all and Max is doing great now,” explained Julie. In addition to being a devoted full-time mum to Max, Julie also runs a popular fashion and beauty blog called ‘Ordinary Gal’. “I love everything to do with fashion and the blog lets me give people tips and advice on clothes and beauty. I’ve also been putting up music videos for the last 8 months and I’ve gotten positive feedback from it,” she said. As the finale of ‘Ireland’s Got Talent’ draws closer, Julie is hoping to receive support from the people of Kildare so that she can continue her dream of pursuing a career in

music. “I’m hoping to continue pursuing music and singing, it would be a dream come true to do it full-time. It’s so exciting to sing on stage, it’s like an out-of-body experience,” said Julie. ‘Ireland’s Got Talent’ third semi-final on Virgin Media One this Saturday, April 6, from 7.30pm.

Punchestown is the Definition of festival

Festival: A special day or period of time, a celebration of an event, typically held in the same place at the same time each year. A festival is deďŹ ned a as a special time. A celebration event. The ďŹ ve day Punchestown Festival embodies this deďŹ nition entirely. From Tuesday 30th April to Saturday 4th May up to 130,000 people will gather in the famous Punchestown racecourse enclosures to celebrate a sport that the Irish excel at. Punchestown is indeed the home of Irish jump racing and the festival is the grand ďŹ nale of the season where we welcome the champions home. Racing takes centre stage at Punchestown but the supporting cast of music, food, style and most of all people, is integral to the success of the occasion. Over 20,000 over-

seas visitors, most from the UK, will make the pilgrimage to Kildare at the end of April but what makes this race meeting so unique? Time and time again the feedback from visitors about how Punchestown differs from other major festivals is the Punchestown atmosphere, friendliness and great craic. This feel good factor spills over into the neighbouring towns and villages. Whilst the competition on the track is ďŹ erce the entertainment throughout the selection of bars, restaurants and venues is buzzing. After all, what celebration would be complete without music, food, style and great craic?

HERE’S A QUICK LOOK AT PUNCHESTOWN 2019 SOCIAL SCENE:

¡ Fourteen different bar venues each boasting their own unique style of interior. Choose from the Loft Bar, Archive Bar or Bud Sports Lounge all located on the ďŹ rst oor of the grandstand with brilliant views of the parade ring, general enclosure and just steps away from the viewing terrace. ¡ Meanwhile in the reserved enclosure the Bollinger Lounge will be the ofďŹ cial HQ of all things fashion as the Punchestown Style Quarter. Ladies are encouraged to make their way to the Bollinger Lounge from 1 o’clock

on where the style scouts will be circulating. Just next door is the now famous Sky Bar the centre piece of the social hub at Punchestown. The Hunt Stand, launched on the opening day of Punchestown 2018 is home to the Festival Bar. This venue is ideal to mix both sport and socialising as the track is just metres away while there is easy access to the Sky Bar and Bollinger Lounge. ¡ Music is a key part of the Punchestown experience and most bars and restaurants will round off an

evening of racing with a live music session. One winning tip we can give is to bring your dancing shoes. From one man bands, two piece chart covers, modern trad, D.J’s spinning oor ďŹ llers, the Ballymore Orchestra and a singalong in the Sky Bar that is now a tradition there is something to suit everyone’s musical taste and abilities! ¡ With all the excitement of a day at the races and the fun of the Punchestown party it is important to refuel! Make sure to visit The Feedroom CafĂŠ at the top of the winners enclosure where a menu of delicious hot dishes (try Philips Famous Chicken Curry – the choice of champions!), cold snacks and decadent desserts. On the ground oor of the grandstand is Hay CafĂŠ where you can get top class coffee, baked treats and savoury snacks. The Foxes Den in the Hunt Stand will serve a selection of hot and tasty dishes on the go and over 30 food concessions will offer all the favourites. ¡ During your festival visit make sure to take a stroll down Osprey Avenue where thirty different exhibitors will be showing the best of Irish design, art, jewellery, millinery and clothing. Make sure to pick up next week’s edition of the Kildare Post for more info and news on the 2019 Punchestown Festival. Childcare court – a broken system Recent coverage in the media has highlighted the issues that the courts face, in handling family law cases and concerns for privacy and capacity, due to the huge volume of cases some courts are experiencing. Most of the issues mentioned here, are from The Child Care Law Reporting Project, led by Dr Carol Coulter, which exposes the difficulties of both privacy and capacity, posed for the judges attempting to deal with childcare cases. Speaking about the fi ndings, she said: “For example, in one court on one day, where there is just one sitting judge, there were 139 cases listed, consisting of crime, general civil law, family law and child care. In another District, the judge can have over 120 cases listed on family law days.” With regard to the issue of privacy, under the in camera rule (meaning only those involved in the legal process can attend, and media and members of the public cannot), all family law proceedings including child care, must be confidential to the parties and their lawyers. “Yet in many courts privacy can be limited, with all litigants and witnesses milling around in large open areas outside the courtrooms, often discussing their cases here with their lawyers. This is exacerbated when family law and child care take place on the same day as crime and civil matters, as the volume of people is greater and family law litigants are cheekby-jowl with prisoners in handcuffs

awaiting criminal proceedings. In some of the smaller courts there is no waiting area at all, and litigants, along with their lawyers, have to wait in cramped hall-ways, sit on stairs, stand outside the court or wait in nearby hotels.” A National overview of child care proceedings in the District Court, by the Child Care Law Reporting Project The report goes on to suggest a dedicated Family Court. “Specialist family courts, in a number of venues around the country, would mean that what are often vulnerable families could have their cases dealt with sensitively in a suitable environment, where their privacy would be assured.” Chair of the Law Society's Family and Child Law Committee Keith Walsh said there was agreement that the current family law system was broken and there was an urgent need for a specialist division to be established. Representatives of the Children's Rights Alliance have also raised serious concerns about the structure of the courts system. Saoirse Brady of the Alliance said: "Despite the fact that most proceedings involving children are subject to the in camera rule, a large number of court facilities still lack basic privacy. "From consultations with lawyers, we know that legal advice is sometimes provided in hallways and stairwells, rather than childfriendly consultation rooms." My own representative body,

The Law Society of Ireland, has also called on the Irish Government to deliver on its commitments and prioritise the modernisation of the family law courts system. Family Law is a dynamic and complex area of law in Ireland, with family breakdown, child custody and protection of minors being some of the most difficult and sensitive court proceedings that exist. I believe the family law system as a whole needs urgent review, including the provision of dedicated and experienced judges, with the appropriate administrative support structures to improve the capacity and efficiency of the system.

Language Orals Over! – What Next? Seven Tips for Leaving Cert Students (by Karl Hegarty, Leinster Senior College) A sense of overwhelming relief comes over you as you depart the oral examiner’s office! It wasn’t as bad as you thought and thankfully the examiner didn’t ask you about the ‘Environment’! Now, what’s next? A well-earned rest, surely? Wrong! Eight weeks remaining so it’s imperative you re-invigorate yourself. Time is of the essence and the remaining time before you sit your Leaving Cert can be extremely beneficial, but you have to use it wisely. By all means give yourself a well-deserved pat on the back, but you need to pick yourself up and focus again. Never lose sight of the ‘ultimate goal’ of reaching your full potential in the Leaving Cert. Below are six tips that may help you with this: • It is imperative that you start asking yourself how much you have retained in a study period, rather than how long you

example or study time table. Ask your teacher to kindly look over an extra exam question for you and that you would really appreciate his/her feedback. Would a daily walk or some other means of exercise help to refresh your mind. • Class attendance remains vital. Most teachers are experts in their field and when preparing for an exam this is the realm you need to be in. At this stage of the year you will often hear teachers say – ‘this question is vital, it comes up every year or a common pitfall in this question is’ . Studying at home may feel comforting but, in my experience, learning and comfort very rarely come hand in hand. • Finally, try to keep everything in perspective. Now would be a good time to remind yourself of how far you have

come. A warranted break is on the horizon, but not yet! • Why not consider attending a few Revision Courses over the Easter Holidays. Material that is covered is of immense importance for the Leaving Cert. Give yourself every opportunity. It may be the grain of rice which tips the scale! Details of Easter Revision Courses at Leinster Senior College, Newbridge are available on www.leinsterseniorcollege.ie. Karl Hegarty is Guidance Counsellor and Principal at Leinster Senior College, Newbridge. Leinster Senior college is small, private college in Newbridge which caters for 5th, 6th and Repeat Leaving Cert Years. For information and enquiries, please call (045) 487 811 or email: info@leinsterseniorcollege.ie

• You need to be both mature and disciplined when looking at your exam papers. If there is a question you hope doesn’t come up, this should signal a red flag and motivate you to work on it. This takes discipline as it can often be frustrating and time consuming. Share your concern with your teacher or fellow student. THE MONEY TRAIL by Murdock

April Fool And May Day! The continuing drama in the British Houses of Parliament is better than any reality TV programme. I never laughed as much in my life on something that is so serious and real. The fact that cameras are allowed in there is a great example of the way politicians behave at a critical moment. It is not as funny in Dáil Éireann nonetheless! Theresa May is doing her damnedest to keep the Tory Party together and is trying to pull out all the stops to retain the modest power control that they exercise now without the full support of the Democratic Unionist Party of Ulster. The DUP, in turn, are determined to hold onto the Union of Great Britain and Northern Ireland which is fairness is their remit. The Government in Ireland have become pan European and run the risk of a serious hit from the European’s regarding Consolidated Tax Base once the other 26 nations support them. The economists in Britain and Ireland at all credible levels are stating that there is going to be catastrophe in the economies on both islands. They maintain that Britain could

association on exports and imports. Parallel to all of this the Irish Government did take on 400 new customs employees where they have put about 170 on the seaports and 180 in the airports. Whether this is just a bit of window dressing to the real issues remains to be seen. We see no immobi-

lisation regarding the Gardaí or additional recruitment or even Army being mentioned, if Brexit happens on the 19th April as somehow foretold. However we do hear that the British Army has immobilised itself and that I find puzzling! There has been marches in London by people who include once upon a time Brexiteers who now want to retain article 50 and not exit at all. Furthermore, they would be happy with another referendum. With all the voting that is going on in Parliament and between the “order order”

of the speaker, John Simon Bercow MP, who is the most amusing man and when he is telling people to unlock after a vote it truly is drama at its best. One often wonders if the drug of politics has taken over at the expense of the remit of the parliamentarians when they were elected in the first place as what they were meant to do. Here in Ireland the fears of a Consolidated Tax Base is coming widely through from commentary made by the European Union and in particular from Margrethe Vestager, the Denmark socialist, in my view, who is trying to Tax everything that stands. It might be good for her career but we are an island nation isolated in Europe for sure. However, our transports costs are high. Our fuel costs are high. We still have to enter through the ports

of the UK by and large to get to Europe or otherwise it is the long haul from Rosslare which is now being developed for this purpose. As I say in Spanish it “Es un Gran Disastre” and unless brinkmanship happens at the last minute for Theresa May’s proposed fourth or fifth or sixth vote on trying to bring in her exit deal it looks likely that the house will fall over there and an election will have to take place. This is because they want to avoid the European elections in the meantime. If this happens anybody could get in over there. There is a new independent party over there who are cheesed off with both Conservative and Labour parties so watch that space. As the people there are fed up, we are very quiet here.

Newbridge family benefit from ‘Doctor in the House’ Louise McCarthy editor@kildarepost.com

A Newbridge family have transformed their overall health following lifestyle changes guided by medical experts on national television. Parents Aoife and Danny Curran, along with their four children, Jack, now 15, Jessica (10), Grace (7) and Emily (4), took part in Doctor in the House on Virgin Media One earlier this week. Life changed dramatically for the Curran family of Kilbelin, Newbridge, when their youngest daughter Emily, now four years old, was born with shoulder dystocia. Aoife said: “She was too big for me, she was born when I was 38 weeks pregnant.” Born at 9lb 2ozs, the newborn was put on a life support machine and required a lot of monitoring. Now a healthy four year old, life is very different. Ms Curran said: "After Emily was born, I found that I did not have the head space to go about trying to lose weight. I found myself making two to three different meals every day, I was 15 stone and had been 12 stone before Emily was born. Having four kids and one being unwell, losing weight went

out of my list of priorities." ‘Doctor in the House’ shows how Aoife has asthma and smokes about 15 cigarettes a day. Danny Curran smokes 20 cigarettes a day and drinks 10 to 13 coffees a day with sugar in each one. When Danny gets home from work he and Aoife like to relax on the sofa with fizzy drinks, crisps and chocolate. The show highlights how seven years previously, Danny was in the army and was very fit. After a week of being tested and followed by the cameras, the family are brought to the Consultation Room. Aoife and Danny find out they are both obese. Aoife is told she

has non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and Danny’s chest x-ray showed irreversible changes in his lungs due to smoking. Aoife feels very guilty when she is told that Jack is significantly iron deficient almost anaemic and that this would affect his concentration in school and also his energy levels. That was two years ago, now Aoife is planning to study midwifery after taking time out from being an ambulance worker to raise the children. The family are much more healthy. While Danny still has a long commute to work, he always ensures that he eats well and makes time for exercise.

The Curran family Newbridge who compeletely changed their diet and lifestyle after working with Doctor in the House

She said: "Before going on Doctor in the House, he would say ‘I don't have time for breakfast’. He thought it would be quicker for him to stop off at a garage, now he makes breakfast a priority." The daily healthy eating habits for the Curran family is likely to look like this, boiled eggs and porridge for the parents, Weetabix for the children, a sandwich toastie for lunch and for din-

ner sweet chilli chicken with brown rice. Aoife said: "The kids use brown bread, we still have to be realistic, when it comes to sweet stuff, they still have treats, but it is a treat rather than an everyday occurrence." She said: "The children were so much better than I thought, they were very accepting of it all." Now Jack (15), is very

healthy. Aoife said: "He eats lots of green leafy vegetables." She says that taking action on their health has made a major impact on their lives. She said: "It has given us balance to have a normal lifestyle. We do a lot of walking now and try to do as much as we can as a family." The series runs on Virgin Media One, on Wednesday nights at 9pm.

COURTBRIEFS Child maintenance order

A man has been ordered at Naas Court to pay child maintenance. Addressing the accused, Judge Desmond Zaidan said: "If you give up two pints a week, that is €20 towards giving food to your child." The court heard how the accused owes thousands of euros. Judge Desmond Zaidan ordered that the accused is ordered to appear before Naas Court in June, for hearing.

Sex offender sleeping in car

Garda evidence heard how when the Gardaí turned up at the property he was renting, his landlord directed him to leave. The Garda said: "The landlord told him to leave, two weeks ago, he has not had time to get accommodation." Judge Desmond Zaidan ordered Gardaí to 'keep an eye on him.' The court heard that he is signing on to the Garda Station as part of his bail conditions. Judge Zaidan ordered that he appear again before Naas District Court within eight weeks for DPP directions.

The court heard how the alleged victim came into the Garda Station and withdrew his statement.

Judge Desmond Zaidan said: "Sometimes you really have to look at the true meaning of the word justice." The charge of Section 3 assault causing harm was withdrawn.

Great news!! The Hollywood Fair is taking place again this year over the weekend of 10 and 11 August. The organising committee is very busy putting their plans in place for what will be a truly memorable event. The next organising meeting is taking place on Monday 29 April at 8pm in the Hollywood Centre and new volunteers are always welcome. Getting involved in the event is a great way of getting to know everyone in the area. “So come along on 29 April and join in planning for more vintage fun!” said John O’Neill, Hollywood Fair PRO.

with robbery at Carry Out Licence, at Claregate St, Kildare, on March 5, 2019. Represented by Defence David Gibbons, the accused has been ordered to appear before Naas District Court on April 4, for DPP directions.

Wife claims husband used foul language A woman claimed to Naas District Court how her husband said “Move bitch!” while she was standing on his way at a cupboard in the kitchen. The couple, who are married for several years, and have children, appeared in court. Her husband faced a charge of contravening a protection order, by using foul language, on March 13, 2019. Evidence was heard how his wife had prior to that obtained a protection order against him. In court, the woman outlined how after getting the Protection Order against her by post, she went to approach her husband and ask him the reason for the Protection Order. She said: "I said ,'Are you terrified of me?', he said, 'Yes, I am'.' Later that day, she said that there was an incident in the kitchen. She said: "He came to the kitchen and started cooking. He needed a pot. I was in the way beside the cupboard and he said, 'Move Bitch.'

The whole morning, I was in a panic." The woman said that she then called the Gardaí. Defence Solicitor, Matthew Byrne, said: "She has not given evidence that she was fearful of him." In court, the husband said that he no longer resides with his wife and that she wanted him out of the house. He denied that he said, 'Move Bitch.' Judge Desmond Zaidan ruled that the accused was found not guilty of contravening a Protection Order.

Baseball bat

A man has been ordered to pay €1,000 to a children's charity after appearing at the door of a man on the sex offenders list in Newbridge with a baseball ball. The 51-year-old married man and father, apologised to the court. At Naas District Court, on Thursday, he appeared charged with being in possession of a baseball bat and trespassing, at a property in Newbridge. The incident arose in relation to the man at the property that he went to being charged with being in possession of child pornography. Sgt Brian Jacob said: "He came to the door and was waving a baseball bat. He was taking the law into his own hands." The court heard how he told the daughter who was at the door that he would use the baseball on the back of her father's head.

Defence said that the accused was a 'hardworking family man' who had not come to Garda attention before. Defence said: "He has expressed his horror, it was a moment of madness. He acknowledged that he never meant to do any harm." In court the accused said: "I apologise to the family involved, it was wrong, a very bad example I showed." Judge Zaidan ordered that the accused pay €1,000 to Barrettstown with one month to pay, by May 16,next. If he pays the money then the charge will be struck out.

€500 to charity

A young man who appeared before Naas District Court and was disruptive in the taxi rank and refused to leave has been ordered to pay €500 to charity. The first year apprentice carpenter is 25 years old. Defence Solicitor, David Gibbons, said that the accused spent a lot of his early life in care. Judge Desmond Zaidan ordered that the accused pay €500 to a charity by September in order to avoid a conviction.

FAITHmatters

The gospel reading for next Sunday is taken from St John Chapter 8. It recalls the story of the woman accused of adultery who is brought before Jesus. This happens during Our Lord’s final days in Jerusalem where he has been preaching daily in the temple. The chief priests and the Pharisees have failed to arrest him. The officers they sent came back and said “No man ever spoke like this man.” That is the background to this gospel. They hope to entrap Jesus. Faith matters quotes from the reflection in Reality, the Redemptorist publication. “The spokesmen for the official religion, the scribes and Pharisees, have caught a woman committing adultery. There is not a word about the man, even though the Law said quite explicitly that both should suffer the death penalty (Leviticus 20:10 and Deuteronomy 22.22). They bring the woman before Jesus, claiming that they want his advice on how to implement the Law. It is more likely they suspect that, as a man who welcomes sinners and

outcasts, he is likely to call for mercy, but if he does, then he will be going against the Law and they can accuse him of being unfaithful to God’s teaching. “It is a trap in which Jesus refuses to be caught. Almost nonchalantly, he bends down and begins tracing something in the dust. We would all love to know what he wrote, but the Gospel writer does not tell us. For a moment, he raises his head and says: ‘If there is anyone among you who is without sin, let him cast the first stone.’ Then he resumes his writing. One by one, the accusers slink away, ‘beginning with the eldest,’ leaving only the woman and Jesus. Once more, he looks up and asks her where her accusers have gone. There is no one left to accuse her or to initiate the horrible death by stoning that would have been the penalty. Jesus then says something that makes even some Christian commentators on this scene nervous: ‘Neither do I condemn you: go and do not sin any more.’ This story highlights once again for us the beautiful mystery of God’s love and mercy.

Some clever occasion Introducing 3D-Trilogyice and accessor The latest advance in laser hair removal technology €34.95

With Spring in full swing, it’s time to turn our eye to all those lovely invites to communions, confirmations and other great days out. For those of you who have given birth in the last year or so though, the invite may bring a bit of a style conundrum. You might be faced with a common dilemma: pre-baby clothes are too tight and maternity clothes are too loose. Celebs give us unnatural ideas of how quickly we get back into our jeans. Remember we don’t have their nannies and chefs! It takes a year to get your body to grow to give birth and usually takes at least that to get back to our post-baby shape. In the meantime, there are some tips and hints that ensure we can minimise the parts we don’t want to show (the flabbier tummy) and to highlight our new assets (great boobs). So what are our best fashion choices? Here are five smart suggestions that will compliment those post-baby bodies. Not only are these pieces stylish and comfortable, but they will reinforce some of that prebaby body confidence.

Review: An Lár Café, Dunlavin

Vegans, Vegetarians, lovers of Organic/Natural Food, a little bit of Heaven has arrived in Dunlavin!

Beetroot burger with water cress, salad, cucumber and potato wedges

was like a cross between a meringue and a cheesecake. But there is plenty of variety in desserts and ‘nicies’, tonnes in fact! Smoothies are also popular an An Lár Café. “They are totally dairy free, no sugar and no additives, we use coconut milk” said Agniszak.

Rose B O’Donoghue editor@kildarepost.com

Opened only since Halloween last, I dropped into An Lár Café on Monday last for lunch, my first visit – and the place was positively buzzing! Formerly Teach de Grás (Grace’s and then Meitheal), Agnieszka and Krystian Pietrzak founded the business after some research and changes to their family diet after their son had experienced some health issues. “Maksymilian has been getting regular bouts of tonsillitis whilst I was having regular stomach problems” said Kristian. “I started to read up and research on dietary options, dairy free foods, a meat free diet, etc. “After a few months, I myself found my stomach problem disappeared when I changed to a more natural, healthier diet. Maksymilian too finally overcame the tonsillitis problem, albeit it took a year”. Joined by family members, Alexandra and Pawel, their initial venture into the food industry came with changes to their own dietary needs. They began to make and sell sourdough breads at Carlow Farmer’s Market along with Vegan crackers which are massively popular now! Agnieszka noticed that when her childrens’ friends came to visit, they too adapted easily to the

gluten free breads and vegan diet. “Parents would say ‘He won’t eat greens or salads’ but they did at our house so we thought we would expand and go open a restaurant in the area”.

More than a Café

But An Lár is more than a café. The family have a massive range of wholefoods such as dried fruits, nuts, pickled veg, pesto, sauces, sour beets, sauerkraut, A&K Real Food raw vegan products: fermented veg(pickled), beet kvass, kambucha, wheatgrass, raw energy bars, activated nuts, along with a divine range of teas (Genuine Jasmine tea from China) plus fresh smoothies made to order. There are dried herbs, wraps, and goods of all sorts, all promoting a healthier more natural diet.

Scrambled free range eggs on Spelt Bread

Breddies

Their raw vegan crackers ‘breddies’ are now renowned along with the selection of breads and fermented fruits – they now supply to no less than 8 health shops in Leinster – Dublin, Greystones, Athy and within the next few weeks, will be supplying to an outlet in Cork. They are definitely on the up and up! Agnieszka heads to Naas Farmer’s Market every Saturday from 9am-3pm whilst Krystian heads to Carlow Farmer’s Market where their wares are in great demand!

Lunch Selection

Lunch options varied from (free range) Scrambled Eggs on Spelt Bread at €6 to Pea Soup and bread at €5; Aloo Gobi (Cauliflower Curry with Cinnamon Rice cost €9; Bigos entailed Vegetable Stew with sauerkraut, mushroom and bread was €8; there was a tempting Courgette, Potato and Carrot pancake with garlic dip for €9 or a Beetroot Burger with salad and sweet potato for €9.50 We opted for Toasted Sandwiches to start, Mozzarella and Garlic for only €5 plus some Cheese, with Pesto and Pumpkin Seeds. OMG they were both delicious!! And served with a healthy portion of salad – only €5. Highly recommended with the Mozzarella and Garlic having a slight edge over the

seeds and pesto! Indeed, we would have had enough to fill us with these before selecting a second choice. My colleague chose the Beetroot Burger served with water cress, cucumber, lettuce, shredded beetroot on a wheat bap, and served with a selection of sweet potatoes – delicious and I’d never seen a purple sweet potato before. This was definitely a wow dish for me. I chose the Sauerkraut stew which was delicious, cabbage in tomato sauce with mushrooms. We were biding our time for the desserts as we were so full! Next time I’m going to try the Avocado and Feta Cheese salad and maybe a pancake afterwards with some fresh fruit! We had a selection of three desserts on Monday including Banoffi Pie, Cheese Cake with Carlow Cheese (by the renowned Elizabeth Bradley) and a Vegan Cashew Cheese Cake. For me, the Banoffi was the outright winner, loved the texture, loved the crunch – and without sugar or additives! Maura loved the Cashew Cheese Cake which had a tang to it and the Carlow Cheese Cake

With such an impressive selection of breads including sourdough rye, spelt and buckwheatgluten-free, and the fabulous range of organic and home-made produce – they seek local produce where they can – an Lár is an amazing food experience. Whilst Krystian started out working with Moyleabbey Farm near Crookstown only a few years ago, now their breads, dried fruits and goods are making a name amongst those who seek healthy foods, and the restaurant is finding a niche for itself along the Kildare and West Wicklow border. An Lar Café, Dunlavin; open Mon – Sat, 9am – 5pm at Market Square, Dunlavin. Breakfast, lunch and confectionery catered for. Soon, the café hopes to open on Sundays, watch this space! 52 GARDENING

Kildarepost Thursday 4 April 2019

SPRING SPECIAL HOUSE & HOME

Transitioning from Winter/early Spring into Spring Summer season It’s the time of year when we are transitioning from our bare-root season Winter/ Early Spring season into our Spring/Summer season, the nursery is starting to look greener, like many of the gardens. It’s a really special time of year, the nursery is full of early season flower and colour. All our Magnolias are in full bloom or some of the later varieties are in bud and any day now are ready to burst. Our Amelanchiers are in flower and as I drive along the ring road in Naas I see them flowering beautifully along the road. Camellias are flowering and Rhododendrons are not far behind. My peonies are starting to show signs of flowering and lots of the earlier flowering herbaceous plants are starting to take flight. It is still cool enough though and this week the temperatures are lower than the last couple so we are still selling bare-root and rootballed trees and hedging although we are now on the final run in before it will be just too late and we will be back to potted options until November. In

Magnolia Galaxy Multistem.

Naas PAVING & PATIO Centre

the meantime this month is choc-a-block with last minute plantings of hedges and trees before the season ends, the key to ensuring that the plants take and thrive is to give them enough water this coming season, the first spring/summer they are in is critical to them. Like, say your pet dog your plants cannot live without the right care, plenty a time have I had calls from customers wondering why there plants especially hedges aren’t doing well and in some cases have died. the answer is plain to see when you take a look at them, “You didn’t water them!” But it rained is the usual response, which in fairness it usually does here in Ireland but would you leave your dog without water even if they have access to the outside where is has rained some time in the last couple of weeks? It is just not enough, these plants have been moved they are bedding in and putting down roots, hopefully strong, fibrous ones that will give a good, healthy plant but it has been unsettled with the move and needs some extra care and attention. If the Spring is dry and windy, this will dry the plants out further and what you will have is a plant that is under pressure and susceptible to

Peony Rose

diseases and infestations and generally in pretty poor condition. As a guide an average hedging plant at 4-5feet tall needs a litre of water twice a week, there are a few exceptions so do ask when you buy your plants. A good option if you know that the likelihood of someone giving the hedge, that you have just spent quite a bit of money on, this kind of attention is slim even with all the best of intentions then investing in a seep hose that you just turn on the tap twice a week and the hose is set to drip ever so slowly for an hour or two along the run of hedging or around the trees or better again, add a timer that is set to come on at night, so no-one can forget. This hose and any timers can be used numerous times whenever you have a new addition to the garden. The seep hose isn’t expensive at about €2.50 per metre and the timers

come in at around €150 for a good one but together they tend to be much cheaper and less hassle than having to replace trees and hedging. There has been a lot of new projects over the last few months and I’m dying to share some of them with you so next week I’ll be looking back at a selection of the projects and looking forward to our Show Garden designs being put together at the Ideal Home Show in the RDS on the 12th to the 14th April, its a wonderful modern showhouse sponsored by Dyson an designed by Rebecca Roe of Hedgeroe Interiors and we will once again be designing, supplying and building the show gardens. Think you’re going to like this contemporary house and gardens.

KILDARE COMMERCIAL PROPERTY MARKET REVIEW AND SPRING OUTLOOK www.oneillandco.ie

54

Kildarepost Thursday 4 April 2019

Overview Activity and growth continued across all sectors of the commercial property market in 2018. It is particularly encouraging to see continued growth outside of Dublin in counties such as Kildare, Meath and Wicklow which are on the commuter belt and benefit from excellent transport and communication links to the capital. Economic figures from the Central Statistics Office indicated GDP growth of 7.5% in 2018 with employment levels increasing by 3% hitting record highs. The biggest rate of growth was in the construction sector. Data published by the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland shows that construction tender prices rose steadily throughout 2018 with an increase of 7.4%. Despite the favourable economic conditions Brexit remained a constant threat throughout the year. In Budget 2018 Capital Gains Tax for qualifying land and buildings (i.e. those purchased between 7th December 2011 and 31st December 2014) was reduced from 7 years to 4 years. Commercial Stamp Duty rate increased from 2% to 6% bringing transactional costs up a total of 5% since 2017. The VAT rate in the hospitality sector returned to 13.5% after being cut to 9% in 2012, creating a commercial decision for businesses whether to absorb the increase or pass it to customers. In 2018 the retail sector continued to be negatively impacted by online sales with the bad weather early in the year also affecting footfall; conversely the long, hot dry Summer brought bumper sales for some categories of retail.

Co Kildare in 2018

Kildare has continued to outperform other neighbouring counties in an economic sense and is home to roughly 5% of the state’s total population, according to Kildare Co Council Economic Profile and Development Strategy. The urban areas including Naas, Newbridge and Celbridge have experienced substantial development mostly due to their their size and relative proximity to Dublin. Rising population numbers have led to an increase in housing density in the more populated areas. Kildare is proving to be an attractive location for the logistics sector with major retailers including Supervalu, Pennys, Aldi and Lidl having developed hubs in the county. Key to this is easy access to Dublin Port which will improve even more with the M7 upgrade works. Many international brands have set up operations in Kildare; /IVV] +VSYT 4JM^IV ERH -RXIP VIGIRXP] ERRSYRGIH TPERWß XS develop a new fabrication facility in Leixlip. Major infrastructural projects are currently underway in the county. The M7 motorway upgrade from 2 to 3 lanes with new link roads is due for completion in 2020. A 3.4km semi-urban distributor road designed to alleviate significant congestion in %XL] MW GYVVIRXP] YRHIV[E] ß 8LI VSPP SYX SJ JMFVI FVSEHFERH continues across the county in a €23m investment project. Demand for commercial property in Kildare continued apace in 2018. The good transport links to Dublin and the midlands, the many well facilitated enterprise parks, a local educated labour market, excellent local services and competitively priced housing are all reasons why many companies are following Kerry Group, Intel, HSE and others in locating in Kildare. A commercial rate revaluation came into effect in the county in January 2018 with approx. 50% of rate payers seeing a reduction in the level of rates they pay. Overall developments in Co Kildare mirror the economic upturn being seen around Ireland. Challenges are increased demand for social/affordable housing, office and industrial space along with escalating house prices and growing levels of congestion.

Kildarepost Thursday 4 April 2019

OFFICE

The office market continued to grow steadily in 2018 inline with overall economic growth at national level. As a result, vacancy rates declined across the county and rental values increased. The close proximity to Dublin and excellent road and rail transport links positions offices in Co Kildare as a good value alternative to locating a business in Dublin. Leasing Grade A office accommodation was costed at €161 €215 per sq. m. (€15 to €20 per sq. ft). for lot sizes ranging from 100 to 929 sq. m (1000 to 10000 sq. ft). Grade B offices have been achieving in the order of €86 to €130 per sq. m. (€8 to €12 per sq. ft). Capital values for office sales were in the region of €1500 and €2000 per sq. m. (€140 to €200 per sq. ft).

RETAIL

Investment stment in the retail sector during 2018 has remained steady. Prime retail floorspace rents continue to grow at a stable rate as has been the pattern over the last few years. Vacancy rates continue to decrease in most major towns around the county. It is likely that uncertainty around Brexit is influencing retailer occupier decisions to focus stores in prime city centre locations. Retail rents for all grades of floorspace continue to grow steadily in Kildare. Kildare village with its recent expansion continues to draw huge numbers of shoppers. The completion of the Lucan Road retail development in Celbridge and the refurbishment of existing stock resulting in new letting activity in Newbridge and Athy bodes well for the future. The confirmation that Dunnes Stores will open a store and café on Main St in Naas is good news for the town and will lead to increases in footfall.

INDUSTRIAL

2018 saw a boost in investment activity in Kildare within the industrial sector. Occupier take up continued to grow along with increases in rents and capital values. Larger sized units proved popular with manufacturing and logistic businesses while the smaller units were secured for a mix of industry. In line with an upward

Phone: 045 856604 Email: info@oneillandco.ie

demand nationwide for investment properties capital values continue to increase. Industrial rents are running at €43 to €75 per sq m. (€4 to €7 per sq ft) across the county with the strongest performance in the urban centres Naas, Newbridge, Maynooth and Athy. Major leasing transactions included 3,716 sq m (40,000 sq ft) to Elsatrans in Naas Enterprise Park, Hireco took up occupancy in a 25,000 sq ft unit on a 2 acre site in Naas Industrial Estate and Airtricity moved into a 10,500 sq. ft unit in Greenogoue Business Park. Innerworkings, the international marketing services company strengthened their presence in the M7 Business Park along with Weatherby Scientific. Domino’s Pizza also strengthened their presence in Naas Enterprise Park. The improved transport links to Dublin, the airport, the port and the National Motorway network has seen Kildare becoming a choice location. This is further confirmed with the current construction by Lidl of a logistics facility (in addition to their existing facility) on the edge of Newbridge Town. on of new industrial units for owner occupation Construction and speculative development is at a slower pace due to increased building costs thus seeing reduced supply of current stock levels.

DEVELOPMENT LAND

There was limited speculative development of commercial property in Kildare in 2018 due in the main to rising construction costs. There were however some significant transactions in both commercial and residential land. Industrial lands in Naas Industrial Estate totalling 3.5 acres achieved in excess of 200k per acre and a 1 acre site in Osberstown Industrial Park for €235k. In residential development land sales Marsville house on 2 acres in Kill Village achieved a price in excess of €500,000 per acre and a smaller site located close by achieved €750,000 per acre. Other significant sales of residential development took place in Naas, Clane, Celbridge, Kilcock and Blessington confirming the appetite for lands for residential development within the commuter belt. It is likely that development land acquired for owner occupation will continue although construction of new commercial property for speculative purposes shall be at a slower pace unless pre sold or let.

Kildare and region in 2019

What’s in store in 2019

The commercial property market in Kildare and surrounding counties is set to continue in an upward direction throughout 2019 despite the uncertainty of Brexit. Europe’s property industry leaders rate transport links (road, rail and airports) as the most important factor in choosing where to develop and invest according to a survey carried out by The Urban Land Institute (ULI) and PWC. Kildare and the counties that surround it are ideally placed to deliver on this demand with excellent road and rail links to the country’s airports, port and quick access to the road network.

There are of course some political and economic threats as we begin 2019, Brexit being the most prominent although Ireland can potentially benefit from the UK’s departure from the EU. Dublin has seen an increase in US and UK companies setting up operations in the city in recent months.

Demand within Kildare, Meath, Wicklow, Westmeath and other nearby counties for industrial, retail and office space is likely to continue to grow, however the lack of new construction could lead to a reduction in supply as vacancy rates in second hand stock continue to decrease. The disruption in the retail sector caused by online retailing is likely to have retail space not performing as well as others, conversely online retailing is contributing greatly to the boom in the logistics sector being seen in Kildare and further afield. Co-working office space is becoming a rapidly growing trend particularly in commuter counties such as Kildare and surrounding counties. This involves desk spaces or larger flexible spaces available on short leases with communal facilities giving rise to a structural change within the office sector. With some of the best commuting links in the country and leading brands located within Kildare and nearby the residential property market is likely to remain buoyant. However, the market will have to work on keeping prices affordable for buyers.

Real estate in a stable economy will be an attractive investment into 2019 and already Ireland is seeing a steady flow of foreign investment. Indigenous developers are also active again often supported by foreign investment. Budget 2019 had few specific implications for property markets, nor was much needed, as most indicators are very positive. Overall, strong economic growth, increasing employment, increasing population and lower taxes will continue to drive the commercial property and retail markets. The exception, of course, is housebuilding, where supply levels remain way below what is required in the affordable and social sectors. Although there is likely to be some reduction in the pace of growth, the Irish commercial property market remains broadly stable and the long-term outlook for the Irish economy remains strong.

Summary

Ireland’s economic outlook is positive putting Ireland amongst the strongest growing economies in 2019 and forecast to be the second largest growing economy in the EU behind Malta. Ireland’s international sector is complemented by a strong domestic economy which will lead to further rises in employment and a positive impact on the commercial property market. Although the outlook is somewhat clouded by Brexit, Ireland’s strong economic position should lead to increased foreign investment which will offset reduced trade.

HONDA’s New CR-V is ‘Evolution in Action’ By Breda Corrigan Member of Irish Motoring Writers’ Association (IMWA)

Since the introduction of the first-generation model in 1995, the Honda CR-V has gone on to become the world’s best-selling SUV. This latest evolution of the popular SUV has been developed to exceed the expectations of customers, with enhanced and unique characteristics. The new CR-V now features a range of sophisticated technologies, and superior quality throughout.

New Honda ‘Family Face’

The all-new CR-V has a fresh appearance, with broader, muscular wheel arches, sharper contours on the bonnet and rear quarter panels, as well as the latest Honda family face, with its signature headlight graphic. One of the fundamental changes made by engineers was to extend the length of the wheelbase by 30mm over the previous generation model. This not only provides more space inside, but contributes to the more muscular stance of the new CR-V, with the wheels now placed closer to each corner.

Petrol or Hybrid Powertrains;

A key difference with the new generation CR-V is that there is no diesel engine available, just regular petrol and Hybrid options. The 1.5-litre turbo-

charged four-cylinder VTEC petrol unit comes with 171bhp and is matched to a six-speed manual gearbox with frontwheel-drive. This engine is also available with 190bhp, and this comes with a CVT (automatic) gearbox and all-wheel-drive (AWD) as standard. The CR-V Hybrid combines a 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine with an electric motor, and is available in two-wheel-drive, or all-wheel-drive versions.

Clever Features

Evolved in every way, the all-new CR-V delivers more comfort, convenience and connectivity than ever before. Clever features make the new CR-V easier to use every day. For exam-

p l e , t h e height of the tailgate when opened can be programmed to avoid contact with low ceilings, while cabin flexibility is boosted by a three-mode centre-console storage, and new single-action ‘dive down’ 60:40 split-fold second row seat backs that enable

faster, easier loading. For the first time ever in a CR-V, there is an option of seven seats on petrol AWD models.

Four Trim Levels

The new CR-V is available in 4 specification levels – Comfort,

Lifestyle, Elegance, and Executive – with all models fitted with Honda Sensing™ as standard. This amazing suite of active safety technologies includes a Collision Mitigation Braking System, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist System, Road Departure Mitigation, Adaptive Cruise Control, Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control, Traffic Sign Recognition, and Intelligent Speed Assistance.

MOTORS 67

Kildarepost Thursday 4 April 2019 ‘Lifestyle’ 1.5-litre VTEC Turbo Petrol 2WD finished in Platinum White Pearl paintwork, which looked fantastic with its contrasting black wheelarch and body cladding. Liberal use of chrome detailing on the front, rear, and sides of the new CR-V provides a premium, upmarket look. Standard equipment across the entire CR-V range is highly impressive, with my test car coming with 18” alloy wheels, rain sensing auto wipers, auto lights, headlight auto on/off timer, remote power windows, retractable door mirrors, dual automatic climate control, front NS rear parking sensors, rear view camera, leather steering wheel and gear knob, vehicle stability assist, trailer assist, hill start assist, intelli-

gent multi-information display, DAB digital radio with 8 speakers, Bluetooth™, wood style instrument panel garnish, space saver spare wheel, high beam support, and a tailgate spoiler, along with numerous other safety, security and comfort features.

Class-Leading Power and Efficiency

The petrol engine in the new CR-V was first seen in the latest Honda Civic, and has been adapted to include an exclusively-designed turbocharger for the CR-V. It offers a remarkable, and class-leading combination of power and efficiency, and features numerous technologies to achieve optimum driveability and performance. With 171bhp and 220Nm of

torque available, the CR-V can sprint from 0-100km/h in just 9.3-seconds, on the way to a top speed of 211km/h (where permitted). Based on official NEDC fuel effiency testing procedures, as little as 6.3-litres of petrol is consumed for every 100km’s driven on a combined driving cycle.

Premium-Class Quality

Interior quality, spaciousness, and sophistication in the new CR-V is benchmarked against premium-brand products, delivering improved ride quality, steering response, body control, and NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) management. Best-in-class interior space efficiency is highlighted by the generous space available for all occupants, as well as a wider, deeper boot with

a longer load bay. A new twoposition boot floor enables a flat surface for loading larger items.

Evolution in Action

On the road, the new CR-V drives with poise and precision, while providing excellent feedback from even the slightest steering input. With a 25% increase (over the previous generation) in torsional rigidity, the result is superior handling performance, and an excellent overall driving experience. The all-new Honda CR-V is the embodiment of ‘Evolution in Action’, as it is now endowed with more refinement, practicality, and improved dynamics than

ever before, thanks to a host of upgrades and innovations.

Pricing and Warranty

Pricing for the all-new, petrol engined, Honda CR-V starts at just €33,500 (ex-works), with annual road tax of €390 on all manual transmission models, and €570 in CVT (automatic) guise. All new Honda passenger cars come complete with a 3-Year/100,000km Mechanical Warranty as standard, along with a 5-Year Exhaust System Warranty, 3-Year Surface Corrosion Warranty, 12-Year Corrosion Warranty, and a 3-Year HondaCare Roadside Assistance package for the ultimate in peace-of-mind motoring.

ALL IRELAND PP HOGAN CUP FINAL

Beirne and Hamill taking success in their stride as they hope to reach the ‘Holy Grail’ By Robert Cribbin Not for the first time, Naas CBS had a team full of stars last weekend as they battled to victory over Kerry side, Pobalsoil Chorca Dhuibhne. One of the players who took centre stage was Alex Beirne as he kicked four points and he summed up the feeling at the final whistle: “It’s unreal, at the start of the year we set out our goals and we knew we were capable of getting here and its great to finally get over the line”. He continued “I know last year the lads fell just short so there was great determination to get the win and thankfully we did. They started very well and we needed a few scores to settle us down as they had a lot of good forwards inside and we then got into a rhythm and we kicked on from there.” The Centre Forward was the Kildare Minor Captain in 2018 and with so many Naas CBS lads also on that panel he puts down the experience as being vital in getting the team to an All-Ireland Final. “We had our fair share of heartbreaks with the County team last year and with a lot of lads still suffering from when we lost the Leinster Final, the

Alex Beirne has been one of the most impressive players to date

fact that we had so much experience of playing in big games certainly helped us get over the line as there is a great relationship between us all. “It helps when you have played in County Finals and big games before so we had a lot of

belief coming into the game and we said if we can get our game plan into action then we can get over the line and thankfully we did in the end. It’s what dreams are made of and we won’t stop now, we know a bit about St. Michael’s and we will be ready”,

Beirne admitted. Another lad who has been key to Naas’s success has been Captain Jack Hamill who is one of the few who was there last year as well. “It’s some feeling, we obviously lost out last year at this point but to get over the line now especially with the lads that were there in 2018 is something special and we are going places where the school has never gone before and it’s just amazing. “The lads who were involved again this year have a lot of experience of playing in big games and even the lads coming through you can see them leading the way. Everyone’s on the same page and it’s a great feeling”. Winning is nothing new to this group of players as they have done it through all the age groups coming up and they hope to do it one more time. “There is something special about this team and even after the missed penalty, we kept on going” said Jack. “We kept encouraging and talking to each other and just kept on going till eventually we won the game. We know each other’s game so well; coming up through the school at under 14s and 16s, we have always been a winning team,

Captain Jack Hamill looks forward to the final and noted the lads have played together through schools competition from U14 upwards

familiar with each other’s style/ game - so that’s a big help”. He added: “We are really looking forward to the final now, we just have to get everything right and give it the best shot

BOXING

Kildare boxers reign supreme on live TV at the National Stadium It was a night to remember for Kildare boxers at the National Stadium last weekend. Veteran Eric 'Lilywhite Lightning' Donovan claimed the Irish Featherweight title after an impressive fourth round victory over Stephen McAfee. The bout was part of an elevenfight card at the Clash of the Titans professional boxing event. Also in action were the Phelan siblings from Kildare Town. The youngest ever Irish female boxer to go pro, Katelynn Phelan (18) won her bout with Polish opponent Monika Antonik. It was a big achievement for the former World Youth and European Junior bronze medallist

who trains out of St Brigid’s Boxing Club. Her brother Allan defeated Aiden Metcalfe in his fight in the BUI Celtic featherweight battle. The event was broadcast live on TG4 in association with Assassin Boxing and Boxing Ireland Promotions. All eleven fights were broadcast live on the TG4 YouTube page with live TV coverage featuring Donovan and the two Phelans from 8.30pm to 11.30pm. The programme was presented by Máire Treasa Ní Cheallaigh with commentary and analysis by Gary Spike O Sullivan, Jason Quigley, Andy Lee and Seán Bán Breathnach.

All Ireland PP Hogan Cup Final

Naas CBS up the ante to secure win over Kerry side By Robert Cribbin

Naas CBS 0-20 Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne 0-14 All Ireland PP Hogan Cup Semi-Final Naas CBS brilliantly booked their place in the Hogan Cup Final next weekend with an excellent performance that saw them run out six point winners over Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne in Mallow. Naas kicked eight wides in the opening half including Alex Beirne missing a penalty but while some teams have buckled at that stage, this group showed their mettle and powered on to secure an impressive win over a much fancied Kerry side. After a dodgy start, Naas were the dominant team and in the second half they kept their opponents to just five points as they took command. The Kildare side were full of stars with the likes of Alex Beirne, Mikey McGovern and Eoin Conneff all scoring heavily but they wouldn’t have got the victory without their defence and they battled

valiantly to close out a much vaunted Kerry attack. The victory means Naas will be the first school from the county to play in the showpiece decider and it caps an amazing two years for Naas CBS who now play St Michael’s of Enniskillen in the final next Saturday at Croke Park. Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne are two time Hogan Cup winners and they made a blistering start to the game as they kicked the first three points. Cillian O’Failbhe landed a point which went over at the end of a patient move in the opening minute before Dylan O’Geibheannaigh and Ruaidhri O’Beaglaoich followed up with a pair of frees. It thus took seven minutes for Naas to register on the scoreboard when Tony O’Connor brilliantly dummy soloed his way into space before taking the score and the Leinster Champions were soon level when Alex Beirne kicked a couple of beautiful efforts from play. The Kerry side looked lethal up front though and they were soon clear again with points from the O’Beaglaoich brothers Ruaidhri and Cathal before O’Geibheannaigh extended the advantage to four points nearing the midway point of the half.

The longer the half went on the better Naas seemed to get with points from Mikey McGovern and Eoin Conneff narrowing the deficit before they then won a penalty in the 20th minute when McGovern was fouled by James Aghas as he was trying to fist a point with the Dingle side’s midfielder getting a black card but Beirne was unable to find the target as he blazed the spot kick wide of the goal. Naas didn’t let the miss affect them though and Conneff settled things with a well taken score under pressure before the teams exchanged scores with Pobalscoil points from Ruaidhri O’Beaglaoich and goalkeeper Deividas Uosis being cancelled out by Naas points from McGovern and Drew Costello that left Pobalscoil Chorcha Duibhne with a 0-9 to 0-8 lead at the break after a brilliant half of football. Naas came out for the second half the better side as they kicked four of the first five points with McGovern converting three frees on the back of a fine Alex Beirne point from distance. Uosis kept Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne in touch with his second free of the game but the keeper was being kept very busy down the other end

as Naas held a 0-12 to 0-10 lead. The Kerry side weren’t getting anything close to the supply that they had in the first half and despite O’Geibheannaigh keeping them in touch, Naas were proving much more fluent with scores from Beirne and McGovern. Ruaidhri O’Beaglaoich kicked his fifth point in the 50th minute and with only two points separating the sides at that stage it looked set for a dramatic finale but Ronan Joyce’s team were having none of it. Naas kicked on and got four points in a row to move into a six point lead as they all but put the result to bed. McGovern got two of them while Naas’s strength in depth was again on show for all to see with subs Paddy McDermott and Simon Murphy kick-

ing scores. Chorca Dhuibhne replied with scores from O’Geibheannaigh and Conor O’Flannura but this was Naas’s day with Dermot Hanifin and Eoin Conneff rounding off the game with points as Naas CBS moved to within 60 minutes of All-Ireland glory. Naas CBS ready to grab glory on national stage By Robert Cribbin Barring a draw, Naas CBS’s All-Ireland odyssey will come to an end on Saturday evening as they take on St Michael’s of Enniskillen in the Hogan Cup Final in Croke Park. It’s been quite the journey when you consider that they have come from not participating in the competition prior to two years ago - to now being just sixty minutes from an All-Ireland Title. The back to back Leinster Champions produced their best performance to date last weekend when they dealt with the might of Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne and it enabled them to go one step further than last year when they fell to Rice College of Mayo in the last four.

That experience of being so close in 2018 looks to have helped the side though and with the likes of David Morrissey, Jack Hamill, Tony O’Connor and Conall Gallagher all still involved they have driven the side on to the final. It’s a team full of quality all over the field with Gallagher and Hamill leading a stout defence while up front Alex Beirne and Mikey McGovern have been putting up big scores and with a squad of 35 they have made full use of the talent at their disposal. There are eight Clubs represented on the Naas squad and seven of them are from Kildare with players from Naas, Raheens, Ballymore Eustace, Eadestown, Two Mile House, Robertstown and Sallins on show.

There are also three players from Blessington including Conall Gallagher who was on the Wicklow U 20 Squad last year. Saturday’s opponents like Naas will be hoping to win their first Hogan Cup after they achieved Ulster Glory in winning the MacRory Cup Final against Omagh CBS to land their first title since 2012 before they then accounted for St Colman’s of Claremorris in the semi-finals. Naas Manager Ronan Joyce has done a brilliant job with the team over the last couple of seasons and he knows that Saturday will be different in a lot of ways but has full faith in his group of players. “It’s a huge day for them but the occasion doesn’t really get to these lads, they’ve done it before as a lot of them would

Racing at Dundalk Curragh trainers Willie McCreery and Eddie Harty got off the mark for the new Flat season at Dundalk on Friday night where they landed the opening two races. McCreery was first up when taking the opening 5f juvenile fillies’ maiden with Ickworth which carried the colours of Godolphin to success at odds of 5/1. She made all the

running to take the opening five-furlong maiden under Billy Lee. McCreery said afterwards “We’ll keep pushing on early with her. There wasn't a blow out of her there and she's a sharp little divil. The Listed race up the Curragh over five could be a target. The dam was a very good mare in Argentina, and I'm

delighted to get a winner for the operation. It's great to get on the board at the start of the year.” Eddie Harty took the handicap over the same distance with 12/1 chance Paved Paradise. Ridden by Mark Gallagher, the four-year-old came from a little off the pace and readily held Blastofmagic by two lengths at the line.

Conor O’Dwyer was also a winner at the County Meath venue where Trump Card, owned by the Trump Syndicate, won the 1m 5f handicap under Billy Lee.

Navan Races The weekend got better for Harty at Navan the following afternoon when he won the opening 5f maiden with outsider Levee Breaks, another partnered by Mark Gallagher. The 33/1 chance was never far off the pace and skipped nicely clear early inside the final furlong to win by three and a quarter lengths. He is likely to go up in trip on his next start. Dermot Weld kept the Curragh flag flying with two winners at Navan on Saturday. He won both divisions of the 8f maiden with horses for the Aga Khan which were ridden by Chris Hayes. Kildare’s Fran Berry retires on surgeon's advice Leading jockey and Kildare native, Fran Berry has announced his retirement after 23 years in the saddle. The Kildare jockey has rode 1,020 winners in Flat racing in Ireland and another 200 winners in Britain, as well as 37 jumps winners in Ireland and four in Britain. Berry (38) said he made the decision after consulting with his surgeon regarding spinal injuries suffered in an incident at Wolverhampton on January 29 this year. Due to the medical advice, he will call time on a fantastic career with immediate effect and focus on work in the media. Berry said: "Whilst this

news is heart-breaking on one level, I am fully aware how lucky I am. Riding has been a fantastic adventure for me and I am very grateful for the way it allowed my family and I to experience the world and gain many friends over that time. "Sincere thanks to my sponsors Sky Bet, Sporting Life and all the trainers, owners, agents, stable staff, doctors and physios who have helped me along the way in the UK, Ireland and Japan. "To my family, Laura, Jordan, Emma Jane for believing in me, Dad, Mum, Alan and our friends for all their support and sacrifi ces that

they made for me over that time." Berry won his fi rst major race at just 18 - the Coral Cup in the 1999 Cheltenham Festival. He later concentrated on the Flat, becoming second jockey to Mick Kinane at John Oxx’s stable before taking over as leading jockey for Oxx in 2010. In September 2010 he enjoyed a Group One winner on the Jessica Harringtontrained champion two-yearold Pathfork in the Vincent O’Brien National Stakes at the Curragh, where he beat Casamento and Zoffany. Berry went on to enjoy more high-profile success

on Dragon Pulse, also for Harrington, and the Richard Hannon-trained Kool Kompany, who took the Group Two Railway Stakes in 2014. In 2016, Berry moved to Britain to become stable jockey for Ralph Beckett before leaving by mutual consent to work as a freelance. He spent six winters in Japan where he rode 79 winners, including 19 Listed/Group races. Berry’s international experience also includes a twomonth spell in Singapore during 2010, where he rode four winners at Kranji, and the inaugural 2018 International Jockey’s Challenge.

Kildare senior ladies put in a dominant display this afternoon against Offaly in St Conleths Park that boosts their scoring difference and leaves them in the knowledge that a win against Sligo away next weekend will secure a Div 3 league semi final spot We have seen this Kildare team blow hot and cold so far throughout the league where they have dominated for the majority of games only to loose concentration and see games they could and should have won slip away from them. With todays encounter against Offaly

while there was a slow start one could see as the game ticked by everything fall into place as players started going up the gears especially in the second half. The home side led at the break 1.08 to 0.06, Kildares first goal going the way of Ellen Dowling slipping her shot under the body of Offaly netminder Lauren Dunne. Offaly managed only 4 scores in the second half and this was mainly due to the excellent defending by the Kildare back line led by Lara Gilbert and Shauna Kendrick. Lara Curran and Orlaith Sullivan kept the Kildare scoreboard ticking over with simple frees but it was Grace Clifford,Neasa Dooley and Ellen Dowling that were rewarded with green flags been raised as they cut through the Offaly defence with pace and ease not missing the target. Kildare scored an impressive 3.10 in that second half with Suncrofts Ellen Dowling finishing the game as top scorer with a tally of 2.04 all from play. Daniel Moynihans chargers are starting to knit very well as

U16 Longford secure win over determined Liles Kildare

Leinster U16 Championship Rd 2 Kildare v Longford Longford were five-point winners in an eight-goal thriller in St Conleth’s Park on Sunday afternoon in Round Two of the Leinster U16 Championship. The Lilies demonstrated their determination and skill throughout and can be proud of their performance over the course of the contest. It was all Longford early on as they raced into an early ten point lead, team captain Lauren McGuire leading the way with two green flags.

The home side responded brilliantly, putting 3-04 unanswered scores on the board; two goals from Eimear Hanlon and one from Leanne Tsang. Longford’s Grace Shannon and Kamille Burke tagged on two Longford points and Longford could have added to the scoreboard as Kamille Burke’s shot slipped through a huddle of players before Kildare keeper Fiadh Whiteley diving excellently and punching the ball around the post for a ’45. Both sides traded points again to finish out an exciting half with the Lilies leading by a single score at the break; 3-05 to 2-07. Knowing a strong second half was needed, the Lilies burst out of the block, splitting the posts on four occasions with Longford scoring one through Burke. With both defenses standing strong it was going to take a special effort to take home the win. That came from the visiting team as

Longford rocked Kildare with a hat trick of goals in quick succession. Molly Mulvihill raised two green flags while Burke hit the Kildare net for Longford’s fifth and final goal. Kildare were dealt a further blow with a sin binning. To their credit, Kildare battled on and to reduce the deficit but they were well matched by their opposition. Longford claimed all three points as they ran out five point winners on a 5-11 to 3-12 score line. A first win for Longford and a second loss for Kildare which makes the groups Round 3 fixtures all the more important and Dublin up next for the Lillies. Tyrrell replied with his own free for Moorefield before Darragh Ryan got Sarsfields’s first effort from play with a well taken score from out the field. Tyrrell and James Murray were arguably Moorefield’s best players on the day and they kicked further points as things looked all too easy for Ross Glavin’s team. Sarsfields did finish well with points from Cahill, Barry Coffey and Cian McConnell coming on the back of a well taken goal from Matty Byrne.
