CELEBRATIONS ST PATRICK’S DAY was deemed “one of the best yetâ€? by gardai as crime ďŹ gures remained “very lowâ€? throughout the long weekend. With pubs heaving over the past few nights and parades taking place around the county on Monday, arrests were down on other years across the same period, according to ofďŹ cers. With only a handful of public order arrests, it seems Kildare is certainly putting paid to the nation’s reputation of rowdy boozers. Meanwhile, parades went off without a hitch across the county. With everything from Viking boats to horses and carriages to many intercultural oats, the spirit of the day took hold as everyone from young to old came out to show their patriotism. As the parades kicked off in Maynooth, this was soon followed by more in Kilcock, Newbridge, Clane, Athy, Castledermot, Kilcullen and Celbridge. With parade committees having put in months of preparations, though dull skies remained, the rain stayed off giving respite to the volunteers from stewards to those featuring in the parades. With themes ranging from ‘celebrations’ to our heritage and many more including interculturalism, there was much colour and entertainment on the streets of the county as St Patrick’s Day was celebrated with style.
