Extra Garda Checkpoints and Garda Patrols have been deployed to tackle a recent spike in burglaries across Co Kildare. A string of break-ins have been reported in several areas and some are linked to the same individuals or gangs. Properties have been targeted in Naas, Newbridge, Celbridge and Maynooth. Vigilant locals have also spotted suspicious vehicles and occupants in many rural areas and alerted residents on social media and community text alert schemes. Gardaí confirmed they made an arrest in Celbridge this week as part of an investigation into recent burglaries and the suspect is due before court. Additional Garda resources have been deployed to prevent burglaries such as high-visibility Patrols and Checkpoints around towns and villages.

Gardaí also advised householders to always lock doors and windows at night or when the home is unoccupied, even for short periods. Burglary alarms must also be activated at all times, even when occupants are in the house. Warnings were issued to never leave car keys close to the front door such as on hall tables or steps of the stairs, and never to leave keys visible through a window. Residents who have been victims of crime have also been asked to provide any CCTV footage to Gardaí. A good guard dog in the property can also be an effective deterrent to would-be burglars who will simply move on if they think it is too risky. Homeowners are asked to call Gardaí if they notice any suspicious vehicles or occupants in their areas. Householders have been advised to keep an eye on elderly neighbours and make sure they're not intimidated into getting unnecessary work done or being scammed out of money through bogus collections/deposits.

Gardai issue advice after car-jacking in Kill Incident happened at a Roundabout in Kill

Naas Gardai have advised motorists to stop a safe distance from somebody they don’t recognise who tries to stop their vehicle. On Tuesday morning, a female motorist in her 40s was flagged down by a male and threatened with a knife before he took her car. Supt Declan McCarthy said: "If you are going to stop for someone who is not clearly identifiable to you, our advice would be to stop at a distance away from them, wind down your window slightly and engage from a distance with them to see what they want.”

He told KFM Radio: “If you are stopping in traffic, stop with enough distance from vehicles in front so you can perform an overtaking manoeuvre if you need to.” Shortly before 7am on Tuesday, a female motorist in her 40s was flagged down by a male pedestrian as she approached a roundabout on Bothar Philip near Kill. She briefly spoke with the pedestrian who proceeded to threaten her at knife point before making off in her car, a blue-coloured Hyundai Tucson. It’s understood the car trav-

elled in the direction of the N7 (northbound). The woman, although not physically harmed, was left badly shaken by the incident. Investigating Gardaí say the pedestrian was wearing a high-vis jacket when he approached the car and may have been involved in a single car collision on the Straffan road a short time earlier. Anyone with information is asked to contact Naas Garda Station 045-884300 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111. The investigation is ongoing.

The local community in Naas was stunned when plants inserted for a commemorative garden were robbed within days of planting. Cllr Sorcha O’Neill (Ind) expressed her horror at the callousness of the robbery, within two days only after planting! “I was going to send out a positive press release about the wonderful work that we achieved between the Naas Access Group, Tidy Towns, Naas Men's Shed, Friends of Naas Hospital and Tesco about the new garden at Fairy Flax on the Blessington Road in Naasâ€? Cllr O’Neill told the Kildare Post. “The plan was for a garden dedicated to those affected by Cancer. As you can see from the photo here, Majella O’Keefe from Naas Access Group and Tidy Towns volunteers fundraised, dug and planted â‚Ź250 worth of plants and trees, only to have them robbed within 2 days of putting them in the groundâ€?. C&AG report slates “inadequate” documentation and management practises at KWETB Rose B O’Donoghue editor@kildarepost.com

Following the publication of an audit by the Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG) on KWETB for yearend 2015, the offices of the Kildare and Wicklow Education and Training Board (KWETB) in Naas were raided last week by Gardaí. The Garda National Economic Crime Bureau, assisted by detectives attached to the Kildare Division carried out a number of searches in the KWETB offices, but noted “As this is an ongoing investigation, no further details will be released at this time.” In 2018, the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau was asked to investigate financial practises at the KWETB after concerns were raised regarding cost over runs, the sale of a company vehicle at the training board, hotel expenditure incurred at a five star hotel and golf resort “with no evidence of any attempts to achieve value for money for the service procured”. An Audit Report released last week unveiled concerns “about procurement, project cost overruns and propriety matters”. The audit also criticised the lack of proper

documentation and procurement processes for contracts secured under the tenure of former Chief Executive, Sean Ashe. The C&AG also cited the undeclared connections of the former CE to a company which was duly awarded the contract. KWETB also rented an industrial property in 2015 which was subsequently partially licensed to the same firm connected to the then Chief Executive. Conducted by Richard Thorn, the Department of Education carried out a separate investigation; following the publication of same last year, then Education Minister Richard Bruton evoked a legal power to formally instruct KWETB to improve its governance. Poor contract management led to the massive overspend at Arklow Community College when former CE Ashe insisted on an earlier completion date - the audit report stated “an acceleration claim from the contractor for €755,000 was eventually settled for €483,00”; it noted that neither had Mr Ashe sought “sanction from the Department to accelerate the project”. Other issues highlighted were the installation of mod-

Sean Ashe, former Chief Executive of KWETB

ular classrooms at Naas Community National School for €206,000 which were subsequently moved to Maynooth PPS – at a cost of €73,000. Mr Thorn’s report highlighted the totally inadequate docu-

mentation for the tendering and procurement of work contracts for the KWETB. The C&AG report similarly felt the management practises under Mr Ashe’s tenure were in breach of procure-

ment guidelines and disclosures. Mr Ashe retired in December 2017 after the report on the KWETB practises in 2015 came to light. Some issues have been referred to the Garda Economic Crime Unit; an investigation is ongoing. The C&AG audit report also noted KWETB rented an industrial property in 2015, to the same firm which Mr Ashe was connected to, and noted how difficult it was for the KWETB to challenge/question the CE effectively during 2015. Cllr Fiona McLoughlin Healy noted In the supplementary part of the report seen by the Board for the first time on Wednesday week, “The C&AG also confirms my concerns that ‘ the Board did not effectively challenge the executive (management) during the period under review”. She continued “This Board’s term is finished in May. Although just three months away, I believe there is still time, if a majority of Board members were so inclined, to step up to the plate and demand answers to questions from the executive. It’s not too late for the Board to 'act effectively’. It would require a series of

meetings scheduled between now and May. “However, to address important issues that we have failed to address. This should include a full risk report to the board and an audit of the KWETB appointments system following complaints about nepotism throughout the organisation” She concluded: “I am hopeful that this report might create the sense of urgency required for the Board to schedule and progress a work programme (as recently suggested by the IPA) in the coming months. There are 29, 000 students and 2,500 staff members throughout schools and training centres across Kildare and Wicklow reliant on this Board to act in their best interest between now and May”

Christy: “We lost our daddy when I was eleven and … the family was shattered by that..” Newbridge singer Christy Moore has opened up about the loss of his father at a young age, giving up alcohol and why he’s determined to do more for the planet. Speaking with Ruairí McKiernan on his Love and Courage podcast, Christy says the death of his father had a profound impact on him that he still feels today. He explained: "It was a shocking experience and it affected us all in different ways and I believe all six of us are still affected by it, you know, by the impact that had on our lives." He recalls how it wasn't until he became a parent himself that it really struck him. “I looked in the mirror and I saw him [his son] and suddenly it dawned on me the effect it would have on him now at this moment. "If he was told what I was told when I was eleven. And it really hit home." He went on to say the awareness of his mother’s struggle as a lone parent with six children helped him realise the need for greater understanding and support for people in need. “You know, I was blessed to grow up in a strong family environment and even though we lost our daddy when I was

eleven and the eldest of six and the family was shattered by that, we still grew up in a

loving, caring environment, you know. And unfortunately, not everybody has that privi-

lege.” On the subject of sobriety, his time as a drinker as part

of the 70s folk scene is well known and he says his current life of sobriety as a “wonderful

thing”. “I know it took me a few years to come into the light. "I can still remember the first time I ever walked out on stage without alcohol or any other substance and it was, for me in my life, it was quite an amazing moment “'Cos for many years I thought I couldn't do anything without those crutches.” Growing up near the Curragh and spending time with family and neighbours on farms and bogs gave a young Christy a love for nature, something that shines through in many of his songs. He says he increasingly concerned about the state of the planet and is determined to do more to act. “The way the weather is changing, you know. There are voices out there and we listen and then we go out and buy a new flat-screen television and a new car and everything has to be 'quadruple-wrapped' in plastic and on we go. "I'm not a very good warrior in the ecological movement. I sing about it and I talk about it but I hope I can do better. I hope I can do more. “On the back of this, I'm going to do better. On the back of this conversation on this day, I'm going to do better. I'm going to do less plastic!

FF “wearing the green jersey” for the greater good

“Now is not the time to evoke a general election” Rose B O’Donoghue editor@kildarepost.com

As GPs across Ireland joined politicians in declaring a no confidence vote in Minister for Health, Simon Harris TD following the massive over spend in the Children’s Hospital project, along with repeated faux pas in cervical smear services, criticism has further mounted against Fianna Fáil for failing to deliver ‘real’ opposition. Speaking to the Kildare Post last week on his visit to South Kildare, FF party leader Micheál Martin strenuously denied FF were ducking the issue and were responsibly putting political advantage to one side for the greater good. In referring to FF’s ongoing Confidence and Supply Agreement, Mr Martin noted that Brexit poses a massive challenge to our agri, equestrian and food sector, and now was not the time to evoke an election. “We have to wear the green jersey on this” he said frankly “For the greater good of the country. Brexit is why we’ve taken this line…we believe we can’t risk a general election – the last time it took us 60 days to form a government, it would be calamitous

to risk a general election now, at a critical time as the UK are leaving the EU”. Addressing a breakfast event in the Keadeen Hotel, with over 200 guests hosted by Deputy Fiona O’Loughlin, the FF party leader stated a ‘no deal’ Brexit posed an enormous challenge to our economy, Ireland having historic links to the UK, our biggest export market. The gathering which entailed a mix of community leaders and Kildare business interests heard Deputy Martin describe the difficulties ahead, when WTO tariffs could dramatically increase our goods’ pricing in the UK, and see British shelves stocked with cheaper South American products. A “disorderly” exit from the EU has so many considerations he noted, not only for the food sector but also for the pharmaceutical industry. “Preparations are key, best scenario would be a soft Brexit”. When asked if he felt the Government had done enough in advance of the approaching Brexit date, however, he didn’t mince his words. “The Government hasn’t done enough – Fianna Fáil carried out a survey recently with small businesses - 50% of small companies are not pre-

pared for changes. In Holland, they have legislation ready to go, and Germany too, but we don’t have our legislation even published yet (in terms of a ‘no deal’ Brexit). Deputy Fiona O’Loughlin added a no deal Brexit also poses a serious challenge to the Equestrian industry. “This is a big issue for the equestrian sector, especially for the movement of horses and jockeys and could impact the tri agreement between Ireland, France and the UK re the free movement of horses”. “There will, however, be some positive opportunities as companies relocate to Ireland in the wake of Brexit” she added. Deputy Martin noted it was two years since he had met with members of the Equestrian industry regarding Brexit concerns. Referring to the ongoing crises in the Health Service, when asked if the current issues went back further than the last three years of Fine Gael in Government, Deputy Martin said “Not necessarily, Mary Harney would have envisaged the project in the modern era, but not this particular project. She set in train the process, in McKenzie’s analysis, they selected the Mater but that had its own issues and was turned down by

Micheál Martin TD, Fiona O’Loughlin TD in An Tearmann, Kilcullen during his recent visit to South Kildare Photo Pat Tinsley

an Bord Pleanála. “Under James O’Reilly, that FG government recommended James Hospital. Leo Varadkar as Mininster for Health made the announcement of €650m all in - and that was only in 2016!” Deputy O’Loughlin added that on the day, Minister Varadkar said it was his best day in politics. “They didn’t keep their eye on the ball, over the last two years there seems to have been no one in charge….the figure rose to almost a billion.

Simon Harris knew last August that it was going to be 100s of millions more than that” continued Mr Martin. “He misled his colleagues in the Dáil. He would have been in receipt of a note from which stated the project was significantly trending over the budget. He knew it was gone €391m over; he told no one. It would be normal for a Minister to share that with his colleagues. A lot more is still to come out on this, that’s why we insisted on Minister Harris coming into the Dáil to apologise.

Re the cervical smear test debacle, Deputy Martin stated Minister Harris’ decision to offer a FREE clinical smear test was damaging to the programme in that we now have a massive backlog, women waiting up to 6 months, many tests are proving invalid owing to the six month backlog - up to 6,000 women will have to retake tests. “However, we (Fianna Fáil) will be wearing the green jersey in the Dáil and won’t be advocating a general election during this calamitous time”.

Famine Pot launched and local WWI soldiers remembered in Milltown A Famine Pot has been ofďŹ cially launched in Milltown in memory of those who died in the Great Famine in the 19th Century. A Plaque was also unveiled to two local men who lost their lives in World War I. Patrick Fenneral and Thomas Walsh were remembered in the poignant ceremony in Milltown Cemetery. The event was organised by Betty O'Shea and others of Milltown Tidy Towns group and Milltown Heritage Centre and guest speakers included historians Mario Corrigan and James Durney. A large crowd was present at the ceremonies which also

featured a lone bagpiper. The Famine Pot was donated by builder Paddy Carroll of Dunmurray Road, Kildare who found it while working on a local farm in Dunmurray. Famine pots, also known as ‘soup pots’ or ‘workhouse pots’ were supplied by the British Government and the Society of Friends (otherwise known as the Quakers) at the height of the Great Famine in 1847. They were made of cast iron, and were used to provide soup to those in need, both in the workhouses and the new soup kitchens set up under the Soup Act of January 1847.

Cheltenham clues aplenty for punters at Naas Races Annual Paddy Power Trials Day – Sunday, 24 February Cheltenham clues aplenty for punters at Naas Races Annual Paddy Power Trials Day – Sunday, 24 February Racegoers will be treated to some vital clues for the Cheltenham Festival - both on the track and off the track - at Naas Racecourse on Sunday, February 24. The annual Paddy Power Trials Day returns to Naas and as well as some insightful races during the seven race card, punters can also take in the views of an all-star panel at the Paddy Power Cheltenham Preview which takes place in the newly renovated Grandstand after racing. With all proceeds going to the Injured Jockeys Fund, punters will be able to hear the thoughts of three-time champion jockey Davy Russell, Willie Mullins' assistant trainer David Casey, top Racing Post journalist David Jennings and former Waterford hurler and punters pal John Mullane. “This weekend could be the last chance shrewd bettors have to pick up on any remaining clues ahead of Cheltenham. And we’ve also introduced a Cheltenham preview evening at Naas Race-

course after the main event so have your cheat sheets at the ready!” a spokesperson for Paddy Power said. The Paddy Power Cheltenham Trial's fixture at Naas on the last Sunday of February has become a renowned stepping stone for trainers to use ahead of the Cheltenham Festival next month. Willie Mullins typically sends a strong team to Naas for this fixture and previously won the Grade 2 novice hurdle on the card with Annie Power, while last year his bumper winner on Paddy Power Trials Day, Carefully Selected, finished a close second in the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham.

Owing to the unseasonably dry winter that we've had in Ireland trainers have found opportunities for Cheltenham prep races scarce but with a more favourable weather forecast in the coming week, Willie Mullins, Gordon Elliott, Joseph O'Brien, Noel Meade Henry de Bromhead and Jessica Harrington are all likely to be well represented at Naas on Sunday. Network Ireland Kildare Branch:

International Women’s Day, Fri March 1 at the Cliff at Lyons Rose B O’Donoghue editor@kildarepost.com

Network Ireland Kildare Branch will celebrate International Women’s Day on Friday, March 1 at the atmospheric Cliff at Lyons, near Celbridge, Co Kildare. Guests will enjoy afternoon tea at the historic venue, along with the opportunity to listen to the motivating story of keynote speakers including Jo Browne, founder of Jo Browne Solid Perfume, tipped by the Irish Times as one of the Top 50 to watch in 2019. Also on the agenda is the presentation of the funds raised at the 2018 charity lunch, to Kildare charity partner, Tiglin. Over €32,000 was raised at the lunch in November, which will support the marvellous work Tiglin carries out in Co Wicklow, with men and women’s rehabilitation centres, plus a support accommodation centre at Greystones for men who have completed the rehab course. Tiglin caters for persons from all over Leinster trying to cast off the shackles of addiction. Founded by Kildare men Phil Thompson and Au-

brey McCarthy, Tiglin also runs weekly food runs to the homeless in Dublin via ‘No Buck’s Café’. Sadly, last week, the generator of the mobile café was stolen but Kildare volunteers still honoured their nightly runs, albeit offering cold snacks and comfort to the homeless. The Network event on March 1 will start with a prosecco reception at 3.30pm followed by delicious afternoon tea; the event is open to members and non-members. “This is a great event to connect and relax with all those women who support and inspire us every day on our journeys, so invite your mum, grans, sisters, friends, mentors and colleagues” said Tara Lane, Network Ireland Kildare Branch PRO. This event is run in association with the Local Enterprise Office Kildare, media partners Kildare Post/Kildare Now and with the support of the AIB. Tickets for this event can be booked through the Eventbrite link on https:// www.facebook.com/ events/2043784449008539/ “Spaces are limited so book your ticket now and join us for this inspiring event” said Tara.

Picture This celebrating after success of second album Athy band Picture This are celebrating after their second album exceeded 1 million online streams. Mdrn Lv was released last week ahead of their five-night stint at the 3Arena in next month. The band are heading on a soldout UK tour, followed by a trip across North America and Canada before returning again to the UK for more dates. Lead singer Ryan Hennessy said the album is also set to do well in the UK charts. "It's going to be our first time in the top 40 of the UK charts, our first album in there." Their first album, simply entitled, Picture This, was released in August 2017 and reached Number One in the Irish charts. The group will perform five soldout nights at the Dublin venue from Wednesday, March 27 to Sunday, March 31 with support from Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi. The Co Kildare boys are also set to perform at the Botanic Gardens in Belfast on June 21 and 22.

“We wanted to perform One Drink but it’s not really suitable lyrical content for daytime TV,” frontman Hennessy said. Fans did hear the track played live at the skyscraper, however, along with their breakthrough hit Take My Hand. Hordes of Irish tourists who just happened to be at the hugely popular tourist attraction screamed in support and begged for souvenir photos. Earlier, Picture This played an intimate invite-only gig in the Empire State’s restaurant which was recorded live for RTE Radio 2FM.

Biggest label

MDRN LV is released on the world’s biggest music label, Republic Records, which is home of Ariana Grande and Drake among others. Ryan added: “MDRN LV is about embracing what modern love is. In modern times people are always talking about the bad times [and what’s going on in the world. “We want to embrace the good side of modern times and focus on that. And modern love is a big part of it. “We wanted to focus on relationships. That’s what I write about because that’s what I know. This album goes through the good side and bad sides, the ups and downs, of many relationships.”

Empire State Building

Picture This have become the first artist ever to have their album officially released on top of the Empire State Building in New York. The four lads performed singles from the new album on the iconic building’s 86th floor viewing deck. "We wanted to launch the album somewhere iconic,” frontman Ryan Hennessy explained. “We always wanted to be the biggest band in the world so no better place to make that statement than at the Empire State Building." The four-piece had invited along

an enthusiastic group of thrilled fans from Ireland who luckily landed in JFK Airport just minutes before the runways were closed due to a huge snowstorm. The concert on the Empire State Building followed a hectic few days

Relay For Life Kildare 2019 is now up and running

FAITHmatters

Relay For Life Kildare 2019 is now up and running for 2019 with Punchestown confirmed for July starting 6 and 7, 1pm on the Saturday and finishing at 1pm on the Sunday. “We are now appealing for teams from all parts of County Kildare to register and have their area/community represented at this year’s Relay. Registration may be made on the Facebook Relay Kildare website and teams’ contact is Sharon Dillon Rowan at 087 659 0480 said Peter O’Neill of Relay for Life Kildare. “All proceeds go to Irish Cancer Society (ICS) initially and then filter back to Kildare patients through a number of services provided by ICS such Faith Matters has just recently become aware of a new book by Father Brian Grogan SJ. It is of course published by Messenger Publications, the publishing company of the Society of Jesus in Ireland. His new book ‘Finding God in a Leaf’ is a series of mystical reflections on the encyclical Laudato Si’ of Pope Francis. The encyclical is about creation and the intimate presence of God in all creation. Mysticism, Father Grogan points out, comes from the Greek and means “hidden” or “secret”. Mysticism infers that behind the outer presentation of things there lies a richer world than the senses can ordinarily grasp. Faith matters quotes directly from Father Grogan: “This is what I am pointing to in writing of the mysticism of Laudato Si’: underpinning all its hard facts, analysis and argumentation is a

profound view of the mystery of nature itself as revealing the divine. “God, Pope Francis affirms, is present in nature, and he wants us to share that perspective, because he believes that it can generate in us a sense of wonder, awe, reverence and love for nature in all its aspects. “This sense will make us strong enough to dedicate ourselves to the demanding task of caring for what he calls ‘our common home.’ When my home is under threat I will fight tooth and nail to protect it and those living in it, because I love it. Such commitment is needed today if our small and fragile planet is to be brought back to health,” With permission of Father Grogan, Faith Matters will come back from time to time to ‘Finding God in a Leaf’.

COURTBRIEFS Female befriending at bars

A young woman has appeared before Naas District Court in connection to befriending strange females at bars in Athy and then stealing property from them. The 21-year-old woman with an Athy address, originally from Spain, is facing a charge of theft at Winkles, Leinster St, Athy, on February 1, 2019. She is facing a €2 theft charge from Winkles. The accused is also facing a Section 13 charge for failing to appear before Athy District Court on September 11, 2018. She is also facing a charge of stealing €10.80 from Winkles, Leinster St, Athy. On December 6, 2018, she is also charged with the theft of an i phone at CI Bar, Athy. She is also facing a Section 4 charge of theft at Castle Inn, Athy, on February 10, 2o19. The accused is facing a charge of stealing a black Samsung A7, to the value of €300. On February 5, 2018, she is accused of stealing €150 from a visa debit card. Garda evidence said: "She would strike up a rapport with females in bars." The court heard how she went to the bars alone. Defence Solicitor, Conal Boyce, told the court how the accused has a history of mental illness. Judge Desmond Zaidan said: "It is a serious case but also tragic, she is vulnerable." He ordered that a Probation/ Psychiatric Report is provided on April 9, next.

Garda kicked in stomach

A Newbridge Garda has been advised by a Naas Judge that she is entitled to provide a victim impact statement after allegations that she sustained kicks to the stomach during the course of her duty. A 32-year-old woman appeared before Naas District Court charged with assaulting a female Garda, on June 13, 2018, in Newbridge. Also she is facing a charge of Section 4 theft at Penneys Newbridge, on May 16, 2018. Garda evidence outlined how the accused was 'intoxicated and volatile'. An altercation took place and the accused kicked out at the female Garda. The court heard how the injuries were minor.

Deaf man with 45 bench-warrants

Judge Desmond Zaidan ordered that the accused return before Naas District Court on February 28, next, for DPP directions and a medical report. She was granted bail on condition that she sign on three times a week at Newbridge Garda Station.

Athy murder case

A 22-year-old Athy man appeared before Naas District Court again facing a murder charge. Calvin Cullen, Greenhills, Athy, is charged with murdering David Boland on November 1, 2018, at Duke St, Athy. Sgt Brian Jacob said the state is still awaiting DPP directions. He acknowledged that the case has been before Naas District Court a number of times. He said: "There are 207 statements. People are working on this full-time. Hopefully the DPP directions will be ready in four weeks." Defence Barrister said that the charge has been before the courts a number of times, Judge Desmond Zaidan said: "I don't want four weeks to become 20 weeks." Time has been extended for Book of Evidence with the accused due to appear again before Naas District Court on March 14, next.

Speeding struck out on Valentine’s Day

Over 80 speeding charges were struck out on

Valentine's Day at Naas District Court. The charges mainly dated back to 2016. Judge Desmond Zaidan ordered that the speeding charges were struck out on Thursday. He said "The State is only bringing these charges to the court today. The delay is inexcusable, they should have been brought within six months."

Drugs charges

A Newbridge man facing a charge of being in possession of cocaine and diamorphine did not appear at Naas District Court because he was in hospital getting an IV drip, his solicitor said. The 46-year-old Newbridge man was charged with possession of drugs (cocaine), for sale or supply at Station Road, Newbridge, on September 25, 2016. On September 22, 2016, he was charged with obstruction at Newbridge Garda Station. On September 25, 2016, he was charged with being in possession of diamorphine. Defence Solicitor, Tony Hanahoe, told the court how the accused is in hospital on an IV drip. He said that the doctor had not yet arrived on rounds to give a sick cert. Judge Desmond Zaidan ordered a benchwarrant.

A Naas Judge says that a man with 45 benchwarrants before the court sets a record. The 51-year-old with an address in Clondalkin, Dublin, was brought before Naas District Court, charged with being in possession of a screwdriver, hammer and wire-cutters,at Athgarvan Road, Newbridge, on February 13, 2019. The court heard how the accused has 45 benchwarrants, some dating back to 2004. His son, who the court heard, was driving a modified car, while the accused was a passenger, on February 13, 2019, appeared in court, to assist his father, who he says is 'hard of hearing.' The son told the court how he is paralysed from the chest down. The accused's son, in a wheelchair, due to an accident, told the court how his father has misplaced his hearing aids and does not understand sign language. His son told the court how their solicitor did not turn up in court, so Conal Boyce was asked by Judge Zaidan to step in and provide representation. Garda evidence outlined how at about 8.25pm, they came across a Skoda car that was 'driving in and out of industrial units.' The Garda said that when they were asked what they were doing, the answer was 'looking for scrap metal.' Garda evidence said that a screwdriver, pliers and a wire-cutter were found in the car. The Gardaí allege that the implements were intended to carry out a burglary. In court, the accused's son said that the implements belong to him and that he requires them to fix his wheelchair. Judge Desmond Zaidan said: "I don't think I have come across such a history of benchwarrants." Gardaí said that they were objecting to bail on the basis that he has such a history of bench-warrants. Judge Zaidan said: "He is on the Champion League of bench-warrants." Mr Boyce said that no formal application would be made for bail. The accused was remanded in custody to appear on Tuesday last. Judge Zaidan directed that appropriate medical attention is given to the accused and for his 'specific hearing difficulty.' Legal aid was granted.

KWWSPCA urgently seeks small plot of land to build new animal shelter – could you help? The KWWSPCA has to leave its present Animal Shelter near Athgarvan and is desperately looking for a small piece of land on which to build a purpose-built shelter. “Only one to two acres is needed but it must be away from houses, have good vehicular access and be in an area where the rescue dogs can be taken for walks away from traffic” said Sally McAffrey. “We hope to buy the land and have started a major fund raising campaign to allow us to do so” added Sally who appealed to Kildare Post readers to please ask farming neighbours and land owners, if they are in a position to sell a small piece of land to the KWWSPCA. She continued: “The KWWSPCA took into its care over 300 dogs in 2018 and without a shelter, many of those dogs would have been put to sleep. Most of the dogs rehomed by the Kildare Dog Pound are rehomed to the KWWSPCA who look after them at our shelter, gives them the necessary veterinary attention and then finds them new homes. Very few dogs as a result, are put now to sleep by the Kildare Pound”.

She's very good with her litter tray also. We are looking for an indoor forever home for this absolute darling girl who is fully vaccinated and neutered. where he discovered what life is supposed to be like for a little puppy and he is now at the KWWSPCA Animal Shelter. He is a super little lad, and loves the other dogs the Shelter. He is sociable, loves his cuddles, to play, and gets on really well with children. As he is still a baby, he will need to go to a home where there is someone at home with him for a good part of the day to give him the training and attention he needs. We will not rehome him to a family with very young children as puppies tend to nip playfully; this

is often misunderstood and taken to be biting. Cookie is microchipped, wormed and vaccinated. He will not be neutered yet as he is too young, but it is a condition of the adoption that he will be neutered at the age of 6 months. The cost of this is taken up by the KWWSPCA provided that it is carried out by a vet with whom we have an account. If you would like to express an interest in adopting Cookie please email kwwspca@gmail. com or text/call 087 127 9835. We ask for a minimum donation of €150 to partly offset the veterinary expenses, a collar tag and dog licence are required to complete the adoption, and a home visit applies. Please note Cookie is a leggy little lad and we expect that he will grow to be quite a tall dog. HomeCOOKING

by Barbara Collins

APPLE FRITTERS When I want comfort food, this is one of my go-to recipes. It is so simple, so delicious and such a treat. It is definitely not for every day, but once in a while, it is heavenly. I like eating apples for this recipe, not Bramleys. They are too sharp. Something like Braeburns are good. METHOD INGREDIENTS 200g plain flour 4 tablespoons sugar 3 teaspoons baking powder 1 pinch of salt 1 egg, beaten 250ml milk 1 to 2 apples, cut into little pieces oil for deep frying

Mix all the dry ingredients together and then add the beaten egg, milk and the apple pieces. Mix well. Heat the oil in a deep saucepan You will want it to be as hot as when you cook chips. Take big spoonfuls of the mixture and drop them one by one in the hot oil. Make sure not to crowd the pan because then they will steam and not taste good. I do them in batches of 8. You will get 24 from this recipe. Fry until golden brown then put them on kitchen roll to absorb the excess oil. They are ready to eat straight away with double cream or ice cream. Mmmmmm

Given the fact that Monasterevin has an unusual amount of bridges it gave rise to its appellation The Venice of Ireland. Arriving in 1786 The Grand Canal lends support to this name. Originally the spur connecting the main line the Barrow in Athy was carried down the bank by locks in to Barrow and up the other side. An aquaduct built in 1826 carries the Grand Canal over the River Barrow preceded by a lift drawbridge where the R424 main road crosses the Barrowline branch of the Grand Canal. This is the only main road bridge to do so on the Grand Canal.

Treating food allergies with acupuncture Every time we see an acupuncturist or doctor and fill out a patient history, there is always a question about allergies, especially drug and food allergies. Since drug allergies can be life threatening, there is a lot of attention paid to them. Some food allergies can also produce a severe reaction, called anaphylactic shock, or even cause death, but this is a rare occurrence. Food allergies can produce a wide variety of symptoms, some acutely uncomfortable, others subtle and hard to pin down. With seasonal allergies, like hay fever, or a reaction to a specific thing, like bee stings or animal fur, we are usually aware of what the problem is. But with food allergies, people often don’t know what is causing their discomfort. They go along for years with headaches, fatigue, breathing problems or some other symptom, and are not aware that food allergies could be the source of their problem. This article will explore the causes of having an allergic reaction to food. But before we go any further, I would advice that no one eats bread, especially

that made from wheat, wheat originally was to feed livestock, but humans got the idea that if we grind it down to a fine powder then maybe we could eat it, more on this later.

a prescription of acupuncture points and herbs to remedy your health imbalance which in turn will resolve your allergic reactions.

Delayed Reaction

The two organ systems most involved with food allergies are the Lung and the Spleen. In addition to breathing, the Lungs are responsible for circulating defensive Qi (immune system energy) at the level of the skin. Therefore, any allergic reactions involving the lungs or skin (hives, eczema, nasal congestion, cough, asthma) indicate that the Lung organ system or meridian needs support. Be very careful also of what you put on your skin most products in moisturising lotions/creams are laden with toxins which may/could cause allergic skin reactions. You see, your skin is not only your largest organ it’s also the thinnest. Only 1/10th of an inch separates you from all sorts of toxins. Your skin is highly permeable, allowing what you apply to your skin access to your bloodstream and thereby to the rest of your body. Always use this simple rule of

One reason that food allergies can be very hard to diagnose is because the symptoms are not just one thing, like hives or sneezing, but can be a systemic reaction. A person could have gastrointestinal tract symptoms, a respiratory system disorder, or even cardiovascular involvement. Another difficulty with detecting food allergies is that there can be a lag time - sometimes it takes several days or even several weeks for a reaction to develop. People with food allergies quite often find that they have developed an allergic reaction to multiple foods. It’s not much fun. And besides that, a very restricted diet can have harmful long-term health consequences. They do not get enough nutrients, and develop many other health problems. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can be very effective in treating this prob-

lem. It focuses on treating the underlying imbalance that produces the symptoms of food allergy. It can reduce the body’s negative reaction to foods, support the functioning of the internal organs, and improve the immune system as well as balancing the digestive system.

The Traditional Chinese Medical Approach

Of course, the easy and simple and solution for a food allergy is to avoid the food you’re allergic to. But with multiple food allergies, it is almost impossible to eliminate whole categories of

foods from the diet. The answer is to rebuild the body’s capacity to respond normally to food. Chinese medicine sees the body as interacting organ systems, and also as a system of energy pathways, or meridians, that connect all parts of the body. Deficiencies or disharmonies in the organs or meridians can be the basis of multiple food allergies. When you visit your Chinese Medical practitioner he/she will assess through a detailed consultation process the actual state of your health and from this information choose

thumb never put anything on your skin that you wouldn’t be willing to eat. Apart from the allergic reactions that pampering your skin with ‘beauty’ products may cause, these products are laced with toxins and this is just simply playing Russian roulette with your health. The Spleen, with its partner the Stomach, is responsible for digestion, and for transforming food into Qi and blood. The Spleen meridian has an outlet in the face and mouth. Symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoeas, abdominal pain, fatigue, and swelling of the lips, tongue, and throat indicate a Spleen imbalance. A Chinese medicine practitioner will select acupuncture points and herbal formulas that support the functioning of the organs, dispersing unhealthy excess patterns and nourishing deficiencies. If a person has been suffering with food allergies for a long time, it may take several months of treatment to reverse the imbalances, but there is a good chance that a healthy response to food will be restored.

Kildare wrestler lays the smackdown on cancer! Back in action at the Moat Theatre on March 10 Kildare Wrestler 'Danger' Dawn Butler will be a part of the big ‘No Limit Wrestling’ show at the Moat Theatre, Naas and is delighted at the prospect of returning to action after her battle outside of the ring with cancer. "I've always loved Pro Wrestling" explains Dawn. "It was always there, I'm the youngest of three, I've two older brothers who loved watching WWE so naturally, I followed suit. "I loved the strength and the stories. I loved the characters and I never 'grew out of it'. I loved Hulk Hogan, The Rock and I still love it to this day". As Dawn got older she went looking for somewhere to learn the craft of pro wrestling. She found the Fight Factory Pro Wrestling School and began to train. "My husband and I were 21 when our son was born so it was tough to fit training in but when you want something, you make it work. “In 2017 after 18 years together, myself and my then fiance were set to get married. Everything was great. I was working as a makeup artist on TV and film sets and at the weekends, I was able to be a part of various wrestling shows and continue my training. Life was good. "It was right around this time I was feeling extremely tired every day but I figured

Dawn is pictured here prior to being diagnosed with cancer with a lucky fan backstage at The Moat Theatre.

it was just the grind of raising my son, wrestling, working

and planning a wedding" says Dawn.

Outside of the ring Dawn loves spending time with her family. She is seen here with husband Peter and son Caine.

"I was so busy that I was ignoring major symptoms like itchy skin, rashes, tiredness, flu-like symptoms, fluid retention, headaches and nausea. I just thought I was burned out. Finally in December 2017, all my work had finished up for Christmas. As I was driving home one day, I was so tired that I just rubbed my face and neck. It was that moment where I felt a massive golf ball sized lump in my throat". Dawn didn't seek medical attention immediately. She waited a week as she was still putting it down to being exhausted from such a busy schedule. "When I finally went to the GP, my bloods showed a high white cell count which was an indication something was wrong. "I was sent to A&E and was told that it could be viral although they found two more lumps on my collar bone. I was basically told to go home and keep an eye on it all. It was over Christmas that I tried to rest up but my family were concerned about me so as soon as Christmas was over, I went back to the GP and said I was feeling worse. “Another blood test revealed that my white cells were alarmingly high. My doctor got me an appointment with the oncologist in Tullamore Hospital the same day and it was just hours later that I was sitting in front of the amazing Doctor Crotty who told me it was likely that I had cancer.

This, of course was my worst nightmare". One week after hearing this devastating news, Tullamore Hospital done a biopsy and Dawn had a full lymph node removed. "The next two weeks were very long" said Dawn. "I was now very ill and this by far was one of the scariest periods of my life. Wrestling took a back seat obviously but normal life had to carry on for my son's benefit. "Two weeks after my biopsy, I went back for the results hopeful that I would be told it wasn't cancer. But unfortunately that was not the case. I had cancer, Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Thankfully it was followed up with a whole treatment plan which was what I clung onto. I was about to embark upon six months of Chemotherapy". Dawn spend almost a month being tested to see if she was well enough for chemotherapy. She also got a PET CT scan. This would tell what stage of cancer she was at. As if things could not seem any more bleak, it emerged that she was at Stage 4 at this time which is often the 'end stage'. But Dawn tried to remain optimistic. "Thankfully, it wasn't in my lungs or heart but I have to admit I was still very scared. While I was trying to be as positive as possible, after hearing I was at Stage 4, I really thought I was going to die. But I knew I had to fight this with everything I had. I wasn't going to go down without a fight". Dawn began her Chemotherapy and found it tough but the staff at the hospital

helped her to stay positive. "The staff and oncology unit is amazing and is actually such a positive place funnily enough" explained Dawn. "My husband and family were amazing through it all. Also my 'wrestling family' were amazing. From everyone involved in wrestling to all the fans. Their support was such a great help. In wrestling, we are a family and I will never forget how they were there for me in my darkest hour. "Then I had some good news. Mid way through my chemotherapy I had a repeat scan that showed that I was in remission. I still had to finish out my chemo but I was officially cancer free". I finished chemo on July 31 2018. My scans in August still showed no cancer and so far my check-ups have been great with no sign of cancer. I was one of the lucky ones". At one point, Dawn thought it was never going to be possible for her to return to the things she loves like being a make-up artist for film and television or wrestling. But now she is back working on sets and is will be a huge part of the No Limit Wrestling show at the Moat Theatre in Naas on March 10. "It's a dream come true to be a part of wrestling again" she says. I'm still limited in what I can do but I'm going to be there at The Moat Theatre on March 10 ready to kick some ass and I can't wait for it!" No Limit Wrestling comes to the Moat Theatre in Naas on Sunday, March 10h at 3pm. Tickets are just €12 available now from www.moattheatre. com. Book early for choice of best seats!

WHAT IS PLASMA? IRL

Plasma is the fourth state of matter:

Liquid, Solid, Gas and Plasma. The principle is to ionise gases in the air to create a small electrical arc, similar to a tiny lightning bolt, with which the areas affected by aesthetic problems may be treated, without unwanted damage to surrounding areas. Plasma causes instant contraction and tightening of skin fibres causing shortening and tightening of skin fibres, thus resulting in the reduction of the skin surface.

Tidy Towns get active on Climate Change Kildare County Council, which is hosting the Eastern and Midlands Regional Climate Action Office, with 17 constituent Local Authorities, is playing a key leadership role both locally in Kildare and regionally in terms of climate action. In fulfilling this role there are many initiatives ongoing such as energy reduction within council owned buildings, construction of solar panel banks

at Aras Chill Dara to reduce the council's dependency on fossil fuels and working locally to promote and assist the development of Sustainable Energy Communities (SECs) within the county. In addition to the above, the council is also drafting a Climate Change Adaptation Strategy which will establish strategic goals and actions which will guide the county of Kildare towards a climate resilient future. This

strategy will be submitted to full Council in September for formal approval but will be subject to public consultation early this coming Summer. As part of the council's commitment to climate action, a workshop was held at Kildare County Council's offices, at

Aras Chill Dara, on Wednesday last (13 February). The workshop was attended by the County Kildare Tidy Towns Network and focused on building climate resilience and developing capacity at a local level by reaching into our local communities; there are 38 active

Sustainable Energy Community As part of Kildare County Councils commitment to reducing energy usage throughout the County, The Council Energy team lead by Energy Manager Barry Griffith and SEC coordinator Paul Regan is working with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), and SEAI mentors FutureFit, to establish a network of Sustainable Energy Communities throughout Kildare. A sustainable Energy Community (SEC) is a community in which everyone works together to develop a sustainable energy system for the benefit of the community. They do this by, aiming to be as energy efficient as possible, to use renewable energy where feasible and to develop decentralized energy supplies. The sustainable energy community can include all the different energy users including homes, community centres, sports clubs, businesses and churches. There are a wide range of benefits in becoming an SEC • Achieve financial and energy savings • Promote community building through partnership approach • Improve public wellbeing through enhanced comfort from energy efficient buildings • Boost local employment • Contribute to national energy reduction targets • Build capacity and leverage funding Kildare County Council is supporting SECs in the County

through partnering with local Communities who wish to set up Sustainable Energy Communities within their areas. In September last year Kildare County Council, in conjunction with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) and Futurefit, who both provide mentorship and expertise to communities, held an SEC information workshop in Áras Chill Dara. Speakers on the day included Gillian Gannon (Seai) Gavin Harte (FutureFit) and Barry Griffith (Kildare County Council) Seven interested groups from around Kildare attended the event with five of the groups going on to establish Sustainable Energy Communities to date. The SECs are currently in the process of applying for partnership with the SEAI which will be followed

by completion of their Community Energy Master Plans. Additional information meetings have been held for SECs since the first workshop in September facilitated by Gavin Harte and John Harrington from Futurefit with support from the Kildare County Council Energy Team. So far to date the Kilcullen SEC has been formally launched with the Clane SEC due to be launched at the end of March. • Kildare County Council welcomes new groups interested in setting up an SEC in Kildare and look forward to supporting the Communities as they work towards reaching their sustainable energy system goals. TIPS FOR RECYCLING FOOD WASTE Some people use a small lidded bin (usually referred to as a Kitchen caddy) to keep indoors for convenience, as your larger brown bin is located outdoors along with your other wheelie bins. Place the small bin on your worktop surface, or elsewhere where it is easily accessible, that you can place your food waste into each day. You will become very aware of the amoun of food you end up throwing out as waste. See www.stopfoodwaste. iefor tips to reduce food waste. • Wrap your food waste in sheets of old newspaper or use compostable bags. (Regular and bio-degradable bags are not suitable for your brown bin ). • Regularly empty your food waste contents into your larger brown bin, which you keep outdoors. Refer to the list of" what you can put into your brown bin"to ensure you do not contaminate your

brown bin for collection. • Keep your brown bin in a shaded area. • Present your brown bin for collection every fortnight regardless if full or not, to avoid odours.

Improve your Home with a

RW

RORY WALSH CONSTRUCTION

Deep Retro Fit Grant

Before & After Recent Retro Fit Grant Project in Naas The original building had 9 inch cavity block which was battened out with 3 x 2 with fiberglass in between timber’s . This was a common method used in the 80s and 90s and very in efficient in resting heat . INSULATION For the extension of this house we had a tight space to work with on side and rear of house . We removed the rear ground floor wall and section of the side of house to give an open plan inside . We used 150mm full fill cavity insulation on external walls . We used 120mm xtherm flat roof insulation on top of the rafters which meant it did not have to be vented , this was then covered with fiberglass roofing product with 30 year gurantee . WINDOWS There were 4 Keylite windows on the roof , these we boxed again with 120 mm roof insulation. We used 400 mm of recycled earth wool in attic areas . In vaulted areas we used earth wool between rafters and covers that with 62.5mm

insulated extherm plaster board across rafters and skin plastered . We used Irish manufactured Passive windows and doors , these have a thicker frame than standard windows and doors which are insulated leaving you with a low U Value . All window / doors and roof windows have air tightness tape fitted to edges to prevent air travelling into the house . HEATING SYSTEM The old burner was replaced with a new Grant Vortex condensing Burner , this cuts back on cost of fuel for the house . Thermostats were also fitted so the house could be run off 2 zones upstairs / downstairs which also cuts down on heating costs . We have started fitting hot water recovery units in houses, rather than having solar panels on roof you can fit these into a hot press in the house and runs for about the same cost of running a fridge for the year . It gives you constant hot water by recycling the heat and moisture from other areas of the house

Kildare County Council go Solar! Kildare County Council recently completed a Solar Photovoltaic (PV) installation on the roof of the county buildings in Naas. The system consists of 272 PV panels and will generate almost 80,000kWh’s of electricity per year for the next 25 years. In 2017, the county buildings in Naas used over 800,000 kWhs, It is hoped that as other energy saving projects are completed, the system will eventually provide over 15% of the total electric use within Aras Chill Dara Barry Griffith (KCC) Claire Cable (ORS) at final inspection Solar PV panels during installation phase The Project team contained Tom Foley from Solar Electric who were the approved contractor to undertake the works, Claire Cable from ORS Consulting Engineers who project managed the design stage and construction stage and Barry Griffith Energy Manager for KCC. The total time of installation was less than four weeks and the work was completed with

no interruption to the normal running of the building. In the coming weeks a screen will be installed within Aras Chill Dara so visitors can see exactly how much green energy is been produced in real time. The project was completed through the SEAI BEC scheme and was 30% funded.

Why Solar PV and how does it work?

Solar PV is a clean, green renewable source of energy. The sun powers natural cycles such as the wind and water flow, and helps sustain life on the planet (e.g. plant growth). The sun is also a source of heat and light which is often taken for granted. Today, we are able to harness the sun's energy and use it to help heat our buildings, our water, and also to produce electricity for our buildings. “In 90 minutes, enough sunlight strikes the earth to provide the entire planet’s energy needs for one year” (Ref: IEA) The production of solar electricity relies on active solar

technology. The most commonly encountered system for solar electricity production is solar photovoltaic (PV). Solar modules use light energy (photons) from the sun to generate electricity through the photovoltaic effect. The photovoltaic effect is an electrochemical process that takes place when solar light comes into contact with a semiconductor, this results in atoms being ionised and generating direct current electricity. The word ‘photovoltaic’ is an amalgamation of two words ‘photo’ and ‘volt’. The PV effect is the process by which a PV cell converts sunlight into electricity. When sunlight shines on a PV cell, it may be reflected, absorbed, or pass through it - the absorbed light is what generates electricity. The main advantages associated with Solar PV systems

Barry Griffith (KCC) Claire Cable (ORS) at final inspection

are that they have no moving parts, they require little maintenance, and work quite satisfactorily with beam or diffuse radiation. They are also readily adapted to varying power requirements because a PV cell is like a ‘building block’ which can be scaled up easily to match load requirements. Also no noise is generated from a PV installation. Solar power generation causes no emissions to air, soil or water and construction is 100% reversible after the lifetime of the project. Solar PV can work well in Ireland even

when it’s cloudy, the price of the pV panels has dropped considerably in recent years. SEAI also offer grants for Solar PV panels to generate electricity for homeowners. Climate change is recognised as the greatest threat to the planet and the greatest challenge facing humanity. The main cause is a rise in the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere with the use of fossil fuels to generate electricity a principal causal factor. In Ireland, the Government have made clear the extent of

the challenge facing the country and the pronounced need to realise commitments made to the European Union in relation to the reduction of greenhouse gases via the development of renewable energy sources that reduce carbon emissions. Solar energy is a critical part of the response to these issues. Solar irradiance is the most abundant natural energy resource on the planet. It is a low carbon, predictable, safe and non-invasive in nature. It is quick to install and makes an immediate and consistent contribution to energy supply.

Small changes can make a big difference to the environment... and your pocket. There are many good reasons to add recycling into your routine. We all know it’s better for the environment, but did you know it can have an impact on your bills? Using your bins to their full potential will decrease the amount of waste going to your general waste bin. This will reduce waste to landfill and it’s impact on the environment, while shrinking your costs. The plastic problem It takes 66% less energy to produce products from recycled plastics. Plastic can be recycled into many new products such as duvet fillings, home insulation, clothing, bin liners, park benches and new bottles.

It can be easy to forget to collect plastics outside the kitchen. Pop a bin in your bathroom to remind you to collect shampoo bottles, lotions, detergents and cleaning agent bottles. It is estimated that 30% of recycling bins collected are contaminated, don’t forget to rinse out products before popping them in your bin.

Reduce food waste The great thing about your organic bin is it removes the need to put food and garden waste in the general waste bin. By simply using an AES organic bin, the average family can reduce the waste going into their general waste bin by over 30%. If it once grew, it can go in the brown bin. Weekly meal plans will help you reduce your food and collection bills. The average Irish household is binning between €400 and €1,000 worth of food each year.

A handy kitchen caddy lined with compostable liners or newspaper will keep everything clean. Takeaway tonight? You can put pizza boxes and cardboard containers into your brown bin.

There are many things you can do to reduce your use of plastics Buy a reusable water bottle & coffee cup. 2 million takeaway cups are thrown away in Ireland every day! Purchase loose fruit and vegetables where possible. Save money by buying larger packs of long life foods, cosmetics and cleaning agents.

February can be most important month in the garden! Although February is the shortest month, it can also be the most important in the gardening calendar. It is a very active month in the garden. It is a great time to catch up on your gardening and prepare for spring and summer. You must plant before you harvest and prepare before you succeed. Invest in your garden now to reap the benefits throughout the year.

Look After Your Wild Birds

Birds begin to nest in early spring so they can take advantage of the warmer months to raise their young. Hence, February is a good time to clean out your nesting boxes. You should also add some high-protein feeds to their bird feeders and tables. Read about the benefits of a wild bird presence in your garden here.

GARDENING 53

Sow and Grow

February is an ideal time to sow seeds. You can grow Tomato, Chilli and Cucumber indoors on a warm windowsill or patio. They can then be replanted into larger pots in March or April. Your reward will be succulent and healthy home-grown fruits in mid summer. Onion seeds can be planted and grown indoors at this time. I’d recommend the very large and tasty Bedfordshire Champion. They should be grown inside until their stems reach 4-5 inches in length. They can then be transplanted outdoors in March, to be harvested in July. Seeds of Scented Sweet Peas and Cottage Garden Plants can also be sown indoors in a bright, warm location. They can then be replanted outdoors in late spring. These plants will then add a beautiful variety of colour to your garden borders and beds dur-

ing the summer. The soil conditions at the moment are ideal for planting shrubs, fruiting plants and trees. If you’re looking to plant hedging plants, Beech and Laurel hedging are excellent options. However, if you live in a coastal area, I would suggest planting either Silver Edge or Elaeagnus, as coastal areas require salt tolerant shrubs. It’s time to select and sprout

this year’s early seed potatoes for a bumper crop of great tasting new potatoes in early summer. One of my favourite varieties is the Red Duke of York. It has an outstanding flavour and is perfect for growing in patio pots and potato planters. As a stable food in our diet, potatoes are a smart choice this year. The crop will provide for your family for the year ahead.

Moss Removal

Moss removal is an important job to focus on in February. The build-up of moss during the winter can be problematic. It gathers on our lawns, driveways, tarmacadam, roof tiles, fences, patios, stones, and bricks. Luckily, there are a range of products you can use to remove moss from your outdoor areas. Treat your lawn moss on a dry day with Zero Lawn Liquid. Simply, apply the Zero lawn treatment to your entire lawn area and watch the moss die away. One week later, apply a

dressing of Osmo Lawn Feed which will green your lawn without forcing growth. Treat the moss on your driveway, tarmacadam, roof tiles, fence, patio, stones, and/ or bricks with PAC. Just mix 1 part of PAC biodegradable liquid with 10 parts water and apply to the affected area. PAC will kill algae, moss, mould and/or lichen within days and the area you have cleaned will remain clean for months. Kitchen Design by Lazzarini Project

and moooi. Polaris Life was another Interior Design studio that delivered stunning Italian Design. I was particularly drawn to their bespoke free standing curved kitchen units which resembled a stunning piece of furniture rather than a kitchen. Its creative curved design gave a very soft look and feel to this kitchen space and was something that I hadn’t seen before in Ireland. Their company is bond with artisanal traditions, the way they select their raw materials and their environmentally sustainable approach to business ensure a production system of the highest quality. The last studio I visited was the design house of Gambirasio. This studio was small in size but its quality and modern design elements were

evident from the moment I entered the showroom. On display was a striking statement balcony design made from a combination of steel and wood which gave it an industrial yet homely feel. There are lots of genuine Italian restaurants and cafes for you to enjoy whilst you explore the beautiful town of Bergamo. One of our favourites was Ristorante Mimmo in the Citta Alta, recommended by our friend Alessandro Cianciaruso. The food was spectacular and it was no surprise there wasn’t a spare seat in the restaurant with their use of fresh quality local ingredients and fantastic service. For stunning views we also visited picturesque Baretto Sanvigilio which also had a lovely atmosphere and an extensive menu.

If you are planning to visit the beautiful town of Bergamo in Italy then you won’t be disappointed with fabulous restaurants, picturesque streets, medieval squares, shopping, beautiful architecture and stunning views from its Venetian walls. There is certainly something to suit all tastes. I hope you found this column enjoyable. ŠKODA hints at the brand’s electric future with the VISION iV concept study By Breda Corrigan Member of Irish Motoring Writers’ Association (IMWA)

The Czech car manufacturer will be presenting its next step towards electric mobility at the Geneva Motor Show (5 to 17 March) with the ŠKODA VISION iV concept study. Now releasing two design sketches, ŠKODA whets the appetite for its fi rst vehicle based on the Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB). The four-door crossover coupé features fascinating sporty and emotional lines. The ŠKODA VISION iV combines an athletic body, 22-inch aerodynamically optimised wheels and powerfully flared mudguards with a pronounced coupé-like, flowing roofline. A characteristic tornado line connecting the front and rear emphasises the clean surfaces of the doors without handles. Cameras, whose housings are visually reminiscent of shark fins, take the place of traditional exterior mirrors. The front characterises a reinterpretation of ŠKODA’s typically wide covered grille, featuring fine vertical ribs and

crystalline structures. The horizontal light strip in the upper part of the grille and strikingly large air intakes in the front apron emphasise the sporty appearance. The powerful rear features aerodynamic spoiler edges and crystalline LED tail lights. They redefine the typical ŠKODA C-shape and emphasise the width of the vehicle in combination with a light strip above the rear diffuser. Another eye-catching element at the rear is the ŠKODA logo; the individual letters are lit up in red. 2019 marks ŠKODA’s entry into the era of electromobility. 124 years after the company was founded, the Czech

automaker is launching the SUPERB PHEV with plug-in hybrid drive and fully batterypowered version of CITIGO. In 2020, the first production

vehicles will follow based on the MEB. Over the next four years, ŠKODA is investing around two billion euros in alternative drive systems and

new mobility services and will have introduced more than ten electrified models by the end of 2022. Contact Sheehy Skoda

‘HOT-SHOT’ FORD MUSTANG ‘BULLITT’ ARRIVES By Breda Corrigan Member of Irish Motoring Writers’ Association (IMWA)

It’s one of the most epic car chases in movie history. Almost 10 minutes long, the iconic sequence in the Warner Bros. film “Bullitt” follows Steve McQueen at the wheel of a 1968 Mustang GT fastback as he chases two hitmen through the streets of San Francisco. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the legendary film, the new special edition Ford Mustang Bullitt is now available in Ireland and is powered by an enhanced version of Ford’s 5.0-litre V8 engine delivering 460 PS and 529 Nm of torque. Offered with a choice of classic Dark Highland Green or Shadow Black exterior colours, the Mustang Bullitt features 19-inch Torq Thruststyle wheels, red Brembo™ brake callipers and a faux Bullitt fuel-filler cap. The interior delivers Ford’s 12-inch all-digital LCD instrument cluster and offers Recaro® sports seats. Interior seat-, centre console- and instrument panel-stitching reflects the exterior colour choice, and each Mustang Bullitt features an individually numbered plaque in place of the traditional Mustang emblem on the passenger-side dashboard. The new Ford Mustang Bullitt also features as standard

Ford’s new rev-matching technology and premium B&O Sound System that delivers 1000 watts through 12 highperformance speakers. “Nothing captured the spirit and excitement of Mustang quite like that amazing car chase in ‘Bullitt’,” said Ciarán McMahon, Chairman and Managing Director of Ford Ireland. “The new Mustang Bullitt packs a similar punch with more power, exciting new features like rev-matching and a B&O Sound System, and – just like Steve McQueen – dripping with understated cool.”

Mustang Bullitt’s powerful V8 engine – delivering 12.4 l/100 km fuel efficiency – is enhanced with an Open Air Induction System, and uprated intake manifold, 87 mm throttle bodies and unique BULLITT powertrain control module calibration. Rev-matching technology for the six-speed manual transmission uses the engine’s electronic control system to briefly increase engine rpm as the driver downshifts – matching the engine rotation speed to that of the gear that is being selected for smooth, seamless gear-changes accompanied by

a “blip” of the throttle. The standard B&O Sound System delivers a rich audio experience for occupants whichever seat they occupy. The system features a dual-voice coil subwoofer for deep, crisp bass and highperformance three-way front door speakers for even sound distribution throughout the cabin. A unique-to-Bullitt welcome screen starts in green with an image of the car rather than the pony, and – as a nod to the original car’s interior – the gear shifter features a white cue ball gearshift knob.

And in addition to the standard seats that feature green stitching and a driver’s seat memory function, optional Recaro® seats are trimmed in black leather. At the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed, UK, Ford delivered the first appearance outside of the US of the iconic 1968 Ford Mustang GT driven by Steve McQueen in Warner Bros. Pictures’ classic film

The Hyundai Tucson Ireland’s Best-Selling Car at Fitzpatrick’s Hyundai

“Bullitt”. Two identical 1968 Mustang GT fastbacks were used in the filming of the movie that debuted in theatres on Oct. 17, 1968. After filming, the cars went their separate ways: the hero vehicle driven by McQueen in the movie was sold by Warner Bros. to a private buyer, and the other – used in many of the jumps during the famous chase scene – was sent to a salvage yard. That jumper vehicle resurfaced in Baja, California, in early 2017, but the other was lost to history… until earlier this year. Sean Kiernan, owner of the hero vehicle, inherited the car in 2014 from his late father, Robert, who had purchased the vehicle in 1974. To fulfil his family’s lifelong dream, Sean contacted Ford and the two parties worked together to reveal his movie star car firstly at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, and later at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, alongside the new Ford Mustang Bullitt. Mustang Bullitt is on sale now in Ireland with a starting price of €73,092 – Breda.

New KIA Sportage – Now Even More Appealing by Breda Corrigan Irish Motoring Writers' Association (IMWA)

Undoubtedly the car that has done the most to change KIA’s brand image, the thirdgeneration Sportage, showed KIA could make attractive, stylish and great value cars, backed up by a seven-year warranty. The fourth-generation car took these attributes and improved on them in a number of ways, pushing the Sportage towards the top of the small SUV class. With over 100,000 sales across Europe annually, the Sportage is a hugely important model for KIA, and represents twenty-five per-cent of the South Korean car manufacturer’s annual output. In Ireland, the Sportage has consistently been KIA’s strongest selling model, thanks to its wide array of talents.

Revised Fourth Generation SUV

The fourth generation KIA

Sportage was launched in 2016, and found itself competing against more SUV rivals than ever before. The meteoric rise of the SUV/Crossover class means that KIA now pitches the Sportage against models as varied as the Hyundai Tucson, Nissan Qashqai, Ford Kuga, Renault Kadjar, Suzuki Vitara and Mazda CX-5, with the vast majority of car manufacturer’s having at least one SUV in their passenger car line-up. The Sportage is available in 2WD and 4WD variants, and sports a five door bodystyle as before. A facelift for the Sportage in late 2018 saw the engine range revamped, along with some refreshing styling enhancements. A 1.6-litre turbo-diesel (CRDi) engine, available in two power outputs, takes the place of the old 1.7-litre unit, yet produces the same power output as before, but consumes less fuel in the process. No petrol engine is available for the Irish market. Visually, the latest Sportage

has been endowed with headturning good looks, and like the rest of the KIA line-up, the Sportage comes in trim variants that are simple to understand. Variants include K2, K3, K4 and, range-topping, GT Line. All models come in 2WD guise with 115bhp, while the K3 specification can be specified with a 4WD drivetrain, and a power output of 136bhp. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard across the range, with a 7-speed DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) reserved for the 2WD, 136bhp K3 specification.

My Test Car

My test car was a KIA Sportage K4 model, finished in stunning Blue Flame metallic paint for maximum impact. Standard equipment across the Sportage range is impressie, with my test car coming complete with 19” alloy wheels, Lane Keep Assist, LED rear lights, Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, leather interior with heated seats front & rear, dual-zone air-conditioning,

reverse camera, front & rear parking sensors, and many more safety, comfort and convenience features. The 1.6litre, 115bhp engine provides excellent fuel economy, with as little as 4.9-litres of diesel consumed for every 100km driven on an extra-urban driving cycle. Annual road tax is just €270 in 2WD guise, and €280 for the 4WD model.

High-Set Driving Position

In addition to the new look, the fourth-generation Sportage also has a new platform shared with sister car, the Hyundai Tucson. The Sportage is great to drive, with lots of grip through corners and a suspension set-up which smooths out the worst bumps very well. The car never feels bulky, and is a big improvement on its predecessor overall. The Sportage is a very relaxing long-distance companion, and is equally impressive on a twisty country road too. A high-set driving position and excellent forward visibility make the Sportage very easy to drive around town. When the fourth generation Sportage came out in 2016, it took the old car’s sloping roof line and bulging arches, but added a sharper rear and more graceful front end. A styling update for 2019 has introduced some little chrome whiskers on the front bumper and a full-width light bar at the back.

Impressive Build Quality

The changes to the inside were more subtle, with the facelift adding a new steering wheel, a revised driver’s

display and tweaked air-conditioning controls. Build quality inside the new Sportage is very impressive. The cabin is full of soft-touch plastics and the buttons and knobs all feel sturdy, with the dashboard offering terrific clarity and functionality. KIA’s infotainment interface was already among the best in this class, and the latest updates make it even better. The clear menu layouts are the same as before, with a split-screen home page showing mapping on the left and other options on the right.

Cabin and Boot Space

You can fit three people comfortably in the rear of the Sportage – even though the middle seat passenger has to position their feet either side of the transmission tunnel. There is excellent knee-room and head-room in the front and rear of the car. There are isofix points in the two outer seats for child seats and, one particular feature that marks out the Sportage, are its reclining rear seats, which offers an extra level of comfort in the back. Whatever gear your latest adventure requires, you've ample space to pack it in the KIA Sportage. In standard position, the generous boot accommodates a 491-litre load – and up to 1,480 litres with the rear seats folded down. By lowering the boot floor, you gain an additional 37 litres of storage for your shopping, sporting equipment and more.

Five-Star Safety Rating

This is the safest Sportage yet, with a stronger body and new active safety technology.

It also features a smoother, more refined ride with greater handling agility. Euro NCAP has tested the Sportage and gave it a five-star safety rating (the maximum score attainable). The car was praised for its ability to protect passengers of all sizes in all seats and its side-on collision protection. It scored an impressive seventy-one per-cent for its active safety assist technologies. KIA's ‘DRIVE WiSE’ technologies help to eliminate many of the inherent dangers and stresses of driving on today’s congested roads, making the road safer and more relaxing. With less stress and hassle, you can truly enjoy the drive in the new KIA Sportage.

Verdict & Pricing

Overall, the new KIA Sportage is a very attractive proposition, thanks to its dynamic design, practicality, refined interior, and enhanced SUV capabilities. With prices starting at just €29,815 (ex works), and the reassurance of KIA’s 7-year/150,000km warranty, there has never been a better time to buy - Breda.

EQUESTRIAN

Kildare born Judy Reynolds on Vancouver K Kildare born Judy Reynolds on Vancouver K, affectionately named as ‘JP’ secured third place yesterday in the FEI World Cup Grand Prix at Neumünster in Germany. The Irish dressage star was the early leader with an impressive score of 75.109% with six competitors to follow. Whilst the top spot went to the World No1 pairing of Isabell Werth (GER) and Weihegold OLD with a final score of 82.565%, with fellow German, Helen Langehanenberg, taking second place on Damsey FRH (76.413%). The Irish dressage star was ecstatic after the event, where she beat many of the world’s leading dressage competitors. “JP, what a horse!” she wrote on social media. “An amazing weekend in Neumünster with a third place finish in the freestyle our best score yet of 82.7%!” She continued: “The support this week has been amazing,

Kildare's Judy Reynolds on Vancouver K aka 'JP'

thank you to everyone especially Paul Nolan, Louise Parkes and Brian Hennessy for all their hard work in getting us into the news! And of course, to our amazing team who prep and preen and get us to the best place possible so we can do our job” Reynold’s gelding Van-

couver K is owned by her parents, Joe and Kathleen Reynolds of Kilteel. RTÉ noted earlier that the result “marks the first time in history that an Irish rider has fi nished on the podium in an FEI World Cup in Europe, which is considered to be the most competitive league in the world”.

Reynolds star has been rising in recent years, the most recent of which was in Amsterdam where they set a new Irish record score of 80.290% in the FEI World Cup Freestyle To Music Grand Prix. Her performances in Neumünster’s in the Freestyle To Music Grand Prix delighted both judges and the audience. Only their third time to perform to the modern and identifiably Irish soundtrack,

‘Lord of the Dance’, the bold JP looks increasingly at ease and gaining in confidence with every performance. Reynolds is pretty much Ireland’s only competitor at this level, and they became the first-ever Irish pairing to take a podium placing in a Western European League Grand Prix. No doubt, there’ll be a welcome home treats for JP and Judy on their return to Co Kildare!

RUGBY

Naas lose to St Mary's in Div 1B AIL St Marys College 18 Naas

11

Div 1B AIL By Mark Herbert After putting up a tremendous first half defensive display, and working their way into a match winning position in the second, Naas suffered a disappointing defeat in this Division 1B AIL game last Friday night. A huge crowd turned up at Templeville Road for this clash, and they were greated by a gale force breeze which Marys played with at their backs in the first half. The strength of it meant that Naas struggled to get out of their own half and therefore had to defend constantly. They did this admirably and effectively, and for the first 15 minutes they never allowed the home side a sniff of a chance. However on 19 minutes Marys finally managed to score. They drove Naas back in a scrum on the ten yard line, winning a penalty in the process. This was duly dispatched into the 22, and from the line-out a fine back line move saw Hugo

Conway run clear to score. Patrick O’Driscoll added the conversion to give Marys a 7-0 lead. On 24 minutes they increased their advantage. Naas were penalised for accidental offside giving Marys a scrum. From this they went through the phases, before Naas were again penalised for hands in a ruck giving O’Driscoll an easy penalty chance in front of the posts, and the same player was again successful with another kick on 31 minutes to increased the lead to 13. However Naas finished the half strongly. A superb break by Peter Hastie took Naas into the Marys half winning a penalty in the process. This

was dispatched into touch and from the line-out a great driving maul was set up. This drove Marys right back over the try-line and referee Dan Carson had no hesitation in awarding the try to Conor Doyle. Although the conversion was missed Naas were right back in the game and it could have got a whole lot better on the stroke of halftime. They won another lineout near the Marys line, and were just about to attack the line but the referee deemed that the throw had not been straight and the home side escaped. The half-time whistle went straight away with Naas trailing by 13-5, but certainly an eight point deficit was acceptable given the conditions. However like somebody hit a switch the winds ferocity reduced greatly, but this did not stop Naas from dominating the second half. However it took them 15 minutes to get another score, which came when the Marys backs were offside and Peter Osborne punished the offence. Although the latter was narrowly wide with another attempt on 67 minutes, just three minutes later he made amends when slotting a penalty from 40 yards out to make the score 13-11. At this stage there looked to be only winner. Althought

trailing by two points Naas were on top and also had the benefit of what wind at their backs remained. However they were to make a big mistake on 73 minutes that cost them dearly. They elected to run a ball from deep in their own half, but coughed up possession and before they knew it they were standing behind their own posts after a Marys counter attack saw Rory Shields score. They conversion was missed giving Naas a glimmer of a draw with the score at 18-11. However to their credit Marys saw out the closing minutes quite easily and defeat was to Naas’ lot, although they did claim a losing bonus point. This defeat sees Naas slip to fifth in the league table but they have a quick chance to make amends this Saturday when they entertain league leaders Malone. Kick-off is a 2.30pm and all support will be greatly appreciated. by half a length. Another Piltown inmate, Smoking Gun, wrapped up a famous day for Blackmore when defeating his own stable companion West Coast Time in the 2m4f handicap hurdle. And it was more of the same at Navan on Sunday where Chris’s Dream landed the Grade 2 Ladbrokes-sponsored Ten Up Novice Chase for Blackmore and De Bromhead. The 5/2 second favourite jumped superbly throughout, and despite being slightly awkward at the last he still landed running and kept on strongly up the hill to repel the effort of his old rival Champagne Classic by half-a-length. The first two home two could lock horns again in next month’s RSA Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham.

Horse Racing Ireland

Tiger Roll was easily the star of the show at Navan on Sunday where Gordon Elliott dominated from start to finish. He was responsible for four winners on the day but standing out was last season’s Aintree Grand National hero, even if his 25/1 success in the Grade 2 Ladbrokes Ireland Boyne Hurdle would not have been the most popular result with punters! Rarely has the nine-year-old travelled as well through a race as he did here for Keith Donoghue, as he cruised to the front at the second last and just had too many guns for market leaders

Off You Go, Cracking Smart and Bachasson. He could bid for a fourth Cheltenham Festival in the cross-country chase next month. Jack Kennedy was in the saddle as Milan Native landed the opening 2m maiden hurdle at odds of 9/2 while Barry O’Neill partnered Ucello Conti to win the Boardsmill Stud Hunters Chase, securing his place in the Foxhunters’ Chase at Cheltenham. Joining him on the boat next month could be Thatsy which made a hugely impressive racecourse debut in the bumper to complete a double for O’Neill and another remarkable Navan afternoon for Elliott. Oscars Den was a winner on the card for Ted Walsh as he scored a one and a half-length victory in the opportunity handicap hurdle. Michael Stenson partnered the 7/1 chance which was in front after the third last hurdle and held off the late rally of British Art to score.

Rachael in winning form

Rachael Blackmore enjoyed

arguably her greatest weekend as she recorded notable success at both Gowran Park and Navan. She rode four winners over the two days, including just her second career treble and her first Grade 2 winners over fences. The Killenaule superstar also reduced Paul Townend’s lead in the jockeys’ championship to just three winners. Blackmore shared winners with Henry De Bromhead and Joseph O'Brien in a Gowran Park treble that was highlighted by the success of De Bromhead’s Monalee in the Grade 2 Red Mills Chase on Saturday. She made all the running on the even money favourite which had little difficulty in seeing off Anibale Fly by two lengths. Cheltenham is definitely on the eight-yearold’s agenda and connections will decide on the Gold Cup or the Ryanair Chase closer to the time. It was the O’Brien-trained Star Max that initiated the Blackmore treble when getting on top close to the line in the 2m maiden hurdle. The well-backed 5/2 chance beat 6/4 favourite Future Proof

Curragh Trainer win at Fairyhouse

Curragh trainer Padraig Roche probably counts Fairyhouse as his favourite racecourse and he was back in the winners’ enclosure at

the County Meath venue on Wednesday where he won the opening maiden hurdle with Way Back Home. Ridden by Mark Walsh, the well-supported 7/4 chance raced to a seven-length success in the colours of Peter Comerford. Four of Padraig’s 11 winners, including his first, have come at Fairyhouse. Walsh was a winner again at Clonmel on Thursday where he teamed up with Joseph O'Brien to land the 2m handicap hurdle with Gen Of Aherlow. The five-year-old finished with a flourish to win the score at odds of 6/1, despite being hampered at the second last flight. He recovered well and got on top close home to beat Marino Marvel.

Dundalk win for Naas apprentice jockey

Naas apprentice Tom Madden partnered the opening winner at Dundalk on Friday night where he won the 5f handicap on the Ado McGuinness-trained Hee Haw. A seventh winner of the winter

season for the young jockey, Hee Haw battled well to deny the Johnny Levins-trained Your Pal Tal by half a length for owner Mark Devlin. Curragh trainer Billy Fitzpatrick landed the second division of the 8f handicap with the consistent Crossingoz which proved half-a-length too good for the Denis Hogan-trained Mulzamm at odds of 5/1. Conor Hoban was the successful jockey. The father and son team of Denis and Ross Coakley combined for further Dundalk success with Park Row which has been one of the stories of the winter on the all-weather. The nine-yearold recorded his fifth victory of the season by landed the 12f handicap at odds of 13/2.

Naas CBS in a league of their own as they impress against Scoil Mhuire, Clane Br Bosco Leinster A Schools Football Championship Quarter-Final Naas CBS

4-19

Sam McCormack (Scoil Mhuire Clane) receiving ball ahead of Conall Gallagher (Naas Cbs)

Scoil Mhuire Clane 1-5 Naas CBS produced a stunning performance as they easily booked their place in the last four of the Br Bosco Cup with victory over Scoil Mhuire Clane in Hawkfield. The all Kildare derby was expected to be a tightly fought affair but it was nothing of the like as Naas CBS dominated from start to finish. Naas lined up with just four of last year’s winning team and it just shows the strength in depth they have flowing through the school at the moment. Naas CBS were fantastic all over the field but special mention must go to Mikey McGovern who finished with 1-7 and he was involved in a hell of a lot more as his fleeting feet caused havoc in the Clane defence. Scoil Mhuire got into the game good and early with Shane O’Sullivan kicking an opening minute free but

forceful attacks proved to be few and far between as Naas gradually took control. Naas duly scored 1-4 without reply before Clane scored again as they exerted all their dominance on proceedings. Mikey McGovern levelled up matters with a well taken free before Drew Costello had a shot expertly saved by Scoil Mhuire goalkeeper Cian Burke after Dermot Hanafin found the corner forward in space. Costello did eventually get on the scoresheet though with a well taken 45 and just minutes later McGovern struck for goal after he glided

through the Clane defence. Costello and Simon Murphy added further points while McGovern nearly had his second goal in the 12th minute when Burke again produced a miraculous save to deny him after he palmed an effort towards goal on the back of a flowing team move. O’Sullivan and Sam McCormack steadied Scoil Mhuire with a pair of scores but they were badly in need of a goal and McCormack looked out of luck when he appeared to be fouled in the square while shooting for goal but nothing was given by Louth referee

Eoin Hand. Naas then finished the half in style with points from play by Kevin Quinn and Dermot Hanafin and they were soon followed up with McGovern converting a trio of frees as the defending Leinster champions took 1-9 to 0-3 lead into the break. Naas didn’t let up on the resumption either with Murphy and Quinn increasing their tally with scores. Scoil Mhuire replied with a pair of frees from O’Sullivan but after David Morrissey denied the centre forward with a smothered save, it was plain to see that the game was up for Padraig Carbury’s men. Incidentally Clane went twenty minutes without a score and in that time Naas CBS cruised home with ruthless efficiency. Last year’s county minor football captain Alex Beirne appeared from the bench to flight over a couple of scores which were then added to by McGovern. Naas led 1-16 to 0-5 at this stage but in the last few minutes they went goal crazy as they found the net three times with Raheens man Conor Murphy getting a brace of efforts after coming on as a sub before Dermot Hanafin also got in on the act with a shot into the top corner. Sam McCormack hit back with a goal for Clane that Naas

goalkeeper David Morrissey will probably be disappointed that he let in as the shot went through him but it made little difference with Naas finishing in style with points from Beirne, John Lawler and Aidan Dunlea as they impressively booked a spot in the semifinals. Leinster LGFA Minor Championship Round 1 Kildare

Offaly

0 02

By Donal Fitzpatrick Kildare minors kickstarted their Leinster championship campaign with a convincing win over a very gallant Offaly side played in Castlemitchell GAA club on Sunday afternoon. On a dry but very windy afternoon referee John Birmingham got proceedings underway. Aided with a very strong wind in the first half Kildare lead by 7 points after 10mins of play and by half time they had added to that lead with the added bonus of a goal from Orlaith Sullivan who finished the half and game with a tally of 1.06 as she was replaced at halftime by Molly Dagg. Kildare impressively lead 115 to no score at the interval. With the aid of the wind in the second period, the expected Offaly fight back didn't

materialise. They found Kildare strong throughout the contest and although they battled hard, they couldn't stem the flow of attack, quick pace and movement from the home side. Eadestown’s Hazel McLoughlin netted Kildare’s second goal finishing off good team play leaving her tally for the game at 1 03. Offaly did manage two points from frees courtesy of Angela Brady and these scores were met with welcome applause from both sets of supporters. That's as good as it got for the visitors as the home side went through the gears to win out on the day on a full time score

Kildare 2.22 Offaly 0.02.

The result doesn't see Offaly as a poor outfit. Offaly battled well and fought gallantly throughout the contest but just couldn't handle the relentless Kildare pressure speed and support play. The home side are off the mark and will look forward

GAA weekend preview

Robert Cribbin reviews the challenges and opportunities ahead of four county teams next weekend It’s a bumper weekend on the InterCounty front with all four teams in action over the next few days. The Senior Footballers return to Newbridge on Sunday afternoon for their Division 2 tie with Clare. It’s a huge game for Cian O’Neill’s men as they look to move up the table but the Banner have been something of a bogey side to them in recent years. Clare defeated them in the Division 3 Final in Croke Park back in 2016 while a year later they pushed the Lillywhites to the pin of their collar before Kildare eventually won out to seal promotion to Division 1. The team selection will be an intriguing watch after the Fermanagh defeat while a few big guns are due to return from injury as well as Two Mile House’s Peter Kelly, Chris Healy and Mark Sherry back from club duty. After defeat on Sunday, the hurlers are in near must win territory if they want to make the League Final and it doesn’t get any easier for them as they take on Wicklow in Aughrim. Wicklow along with Down are level with them on points and nothing less than a win at the weekend will suffice for David Herity’s men. It looks increasingly likely that Derry will be in the Division 2B Final so its now a case of one from three and a win over Wicklow would be a start. The women aren’t to be outdone either and the Ladies Footballers get the ball rolling on Saturday as they also make the trip across the border to the Garden County. Like Kildare, Wicklow have one win and one loss in the Division 3

campaign so both will be out to secure the win. Kildare were narrowly beaten by Roscommon two weeks ago and after the Rossies easily accounted for Wicklow in Round 1, Daniel Moynihan’s team will be confident of picking up the two points. Last but not least is the Kildare Camogie team and they made a perfect start to their campaign with victory

over Tyrone in Hawkfield. They are now in the fortunate position of having a second consecutive home game with Limerick the visitors. New manager Peter Williams hasn’t hidden the fact that his aim is to win the League so they will hope to move closer to that target on Sunday. All in all, a very busy weekend lies in wait.

Lilies lose out to determined Derry – promotion bid now in jeopardy Derry

Allianz National Hurling League Division 2B

with Wicklow picking up a victory over Donegal - means Kildare will travel to Aughrim next Sunday in near must win territory if they are to finish in the top 2. Derry wasted little time in making their mark on the scoreboard as Alan Grant knocked an excellent effort between the posts on the back of a Thomas Brady pass in the opening minute of the game. Brian Byrne responded with a free but the Oak Leaf county maintained the lead with Cormac O’Doherty converting a free of his own from out on the sideline. Kildare weren’t down for long though and they got the game’s opening goal in the 12th minute as Diarmuid Cahill sped downfield and while his shot was well saved by Sean Kelly in the Derry goal, Caolan Smith was quickest to the rebound to force the ball to the net. Byrne then followed up with his second free but that was cancelled out when O’Doherty knocked over a sublime point from a sideline cut. Another Byrne free was then

Kildare’s promotion hopes hit a major stumbling block as they were defeated by Derry in a tightly contested affair in St Conleth’s Park last weekend. The game was dominated by the free taking of both Brian Byrne and Cormac O’Doherty who contributed 21 points between them but it was Derry who had just enough in the tank to seal the win. Caolan Smith did plunder in an opening half goal for Kildare but they never really got any fluency in their game going and, despite leading by a point at the break, they fell up short. added to by a lovely effort from Barry Cormack and David Herity’s men suddenly had a 1-4 to 0-3 advantage halfway through the half. Richie Mullan pointed for Derry to get the deficit back to three points before the teams exchanged scores over the next ten minutes in a real stop start half of Hurling. Kildare registered with Paul Divilly and Brian Byrne scoring on the back of a wonderful score from Conor Dowling where both Divilly and Ross Kelly did well to put him in the clear. Derry then replied with a brace of frees from O’Doherty to leave just four points separating the teams entering stoppage time. With the Galway official being pretty whistle happy throughout, there was five minutes added on and Derry took full advantage with Se McGuigan scoring from play before two more frees from O’Doherty ensured the Ulster side only went into the break trailing by the minimum on a 1-7 to 0-9 scoreline. Derry made it four points on

the bounce between the two halves’ when O’Doherty converted a free at the beginning of the second period to bring the sides level for only the second time. Byrne replied in kind but the visitors were gradually getting on top and Mullan equalized before they had a glorious chance for goal when substitute Gerald Bradley had a shot well saved by Paddy McKenna. Instead of letting the resulting rebound flow, the referee blew bizarrely for an earlier free

which O’Doherty blazed over. Byrne knocked over another free in response but Derry kept the advantage with a trio of points from Mullen, Alan Grant and John Mullan. Kildare then had a glorious opportunity to retake the lead in the 51st minute when a brilliant handpass from Cathal Dowling put Byrne in the clear and despite firing a shot towards goal, the Derry goalkeeper Sean Kelly stood tall and produced a brilliant save. It proved to be a real turning

point as Kildare never retook the lead again as the contest sea-sawed from there till the end. A hat-trick of frees from Byrne kept Kildare in touch but Derry were doing enough to keep their noses in front with scores from O’Doherty, Gerald Bradley and Se McGuigan. Derry also looked to have claims for a penalty when Gerald Bradley appeared top be fouled in the square by Cathal Derivan but nothing was

given. Kildare did manage to draw level with five minutes remaining with points from Byrne and Paul Divilly but it was Derry who finished the stronger as scores from O’Doherty and Thomas Brady gave them a two point lead. Like the first half, there was a number of minutes added on but apart from a Byrne free and Paddy McKenna having a late placed ball saved, Kildare’s effort was done as Derry ended their unbeaten record with a

Herity full of praise for Derry as Oak Leaf county make huge step towards promotion By Robert Cribbin Even before the League started it was always touted that this game could play a huge factor in deciding the top two finishers in Division 2B and it looks to be going along familiar lines as Derry went to Newbridge and took the points. The game was a repeat of the 2018 Christy Ring semifinal but on this occasion, it was Derry who came out on top. Kildare manager David Herity was full of praise for the victors afterwards and singled out centre forward, Cormac O’Doherty in particular. “We were just a point up at half-time and I thought we were better than that and should have been three or four up but the way they came back before the break was the difference in the end”. “Overall, we didn’t punish them enough on the score-

board and we gave away far too many frees; they punished us every single time with Cormac O’Doherty who is a brilliant free taker so it’s something we have to go back and look at and try and improve on for the Wicklow game”. Unlike Kildare, Derry are currently playing better for longer and

Sunday’s game again showcased that as the hosts only showed up in patches and were chasing shadows for most of the game while John McEvoy’s Derry side looked more sure of themselves. “We just gave away far too many needless frees and after forcing turnovers a few decisions went against us so there is things we can work on and I thought the lads were brilliant in the second half but Derry are a good team and they got on top of us and every time, we got close to them, they kicked on again. “Their keeper made a David Herity, Kildare hurling manager

crucial save from Brian Byrne at a vital time but in general, there is a huge amount we can take from the game and while we played well in patches, we are learning a lot and playing against the likes of Derry will bring us on a tonne” Herity said. With Warwickshire coming next weekend, Derry now have one foot in the League final and it now looks to be a race for the other spot. “The next two games are must wins now and Wicklow away next weekend is going to be a fierce battle and while we got over them in the Keogh Cup, this will be completely different and Mark Doyle had to make a couple of great saves that day as well. They will be huge opposition and it’s still all to play for and the League is set up nicely”. “You’d now expect Derry to be practically in the final after the win today so it’s going to be a huge fight between ourselves, Wicklow and Down for that other spot”.

TAKE 5 MAN OF THE MATCH: Richie Mullan (Derry)

The corner forward was very much on the periphery for a lot of the game but in a game dominated by frees his three efforts from play proved crucial in the result. He was always an out ball for the Derry backs and his elusiveness proved defining in the end. Brian Byrne again stood out for Kildare while Cathal Dowling had a big impact from full forward.

SCORE OF THE GAME:

It was a day for free takers and Cormac O’Doherty was certainly on the money in that regard but his first half sideline cut on the far wing was a joy to behold and just showed all the skill that the centre forward has in his armoury and it set Derry on their way.

TURNING POINT:

Kildare were only just about holding on to Derry’s curtails but when they trailed by two points halfway through the second half Brian Byrne had a great goal chance and unfortunately for him it was well saved. A goal then would have given Kildare the lead but it didn’t go in and Derry maintained the lead from there till the end.

Talking Point:

The forward division is beginning to look like a bit of a problem for this Kildare side. An awful lot is expected of Brian Byrne and they are in dire need of someone stepping up to the breach to release the pressure on the Naas man when he is shackled like he was on Sunday. Ryan Casey and Bernard Deay both walking of their own accord earlier this week wasn’t ideal and the return of James Burke and Jack Sheridan can’t come quick enough.

What’s next:

Kildare face into a crucial game away in Aughrim against Wicklow next Sunday while Derry make a trip across the water to take on Warwickshire.
