Clown armed with axe terrorises Co Kildare family by Louise McCarthy A rural Co Kildare community is in shock following a rampaging clown armed with an axe who terrified a young child. The man, believed to be about 6ft, dressed in an orange jumpsuit entered the home of a young family in the Athgarvan area, waving an axe around. The young child has been left traumatised by the incident earlier this week. Her mother said: “I was getting my child ready for bed when I saw white gloves coming through the window. I thought it was just a family member messing about. Later, I heard my child screaming in the kitchen. My boyfriend let a scream at him and he was gone. My

child was petrified, she does not want to go out for Halloween now. She was asking all night, ‘ are you sure the monster is not coming back?” At Lakeside Park, Newbridge in a separate incident, locals reported up to five teenagers were going around wearing clown masks trying to intimidate passsers-by. Residents in the area reported them to Gardai. Also in another incident, it is understood people wearing clown masks in Kildare Town were jumping out in front of cars, causing potential danger to motorists and pedestrians. They were hiding behind estate signs at Coolaghknock, Glebe and leaping out as they saw vehicles passing.

Parents and community activists have denounced this irresponsible behaviour which is upsetting to children who normally enjoy the ‘trick or treat’ season. Some parents have expressed their anger at the barrage of scary clown videos popping up on Youtube and social media and advise adults to monitor or curtail their children’s time on social media/ the internet.

Family of deceased Kildare woman to sue Gardaí by Louise McCarthy

The family of a Co Kildare woman are now suing the Garda Siochána following a chase that ended in the death of 43- year-old woman, Diana Harton. Ms Harton, Claregate Court, Co Kildare, was killed in a crash, when she became the victim of a Garda chase on October 23, two years ago. A statement by the family following last year’s inquest in Naas said: “We do, however, believe that the actions of the Gardai that night by the manner in which they conducted the pursuit of Mr Joyce contributed to significantly to the horrific collision. The failure to coordinate the pursuit in any coherent manner was as a result of a complete lack of training or awareness of the basic rules set down in their own code of conduct.” Mr Gilhooly told Kildare the Post that the Harton family are seeking €35,000 and expenses. He said: “They are looking for justice, confirmation, they feel that Gardaí are partly responsible for the death of Diana. I would like to see justice for the family.” Following the inquest in Naas last year, a jury decided that Section 3541, the method of carrying out a car chase and the training to do this needs to be reviewed, they decided. Also it was decided that the Minister for Justice needs to review the 1976 Criminal Law Act.

crimebriefs Cash taken in Ladytown A large amount of cash was taken outside Naas last week. Gardaí said a home and sheds were broken into in the Ladytown area on Thursday. Anybody with information is asked to contact Naas Garda Station.

Raid at Spar in Newbridge The Spar on Edward Street in Newbridge was broken into on Monday. Two men in hoodies took a large amount of cash according to Gardai. Anybody with information is asked to contact Newbridge Garda Station.

Warning about thefts from cars Gardaí also issued a general warning not to leave valuables in cars while visiting graveyards. Belongings such as purses, wallets, mobile phones must not be left in plain sight.

Garda Sgt Mary Mulroe said: “A theft against a person visiting a graveyard can be particularly traumatic.” The warning also applies to people parking in the Curragh area to go walking or running.

Garda appeal for witnesses to ambulance fire Naas Gardaí want to speak to anybody who was in the vicinity of Naas General Hospital when an ambulance burst into flames killing a Suncroft man. Tragic Christy Byrne (78) was killed and two paramedics were injured in the incident at the entrance to the Emergency Dept on September 22. Gardaí, the Health and Safety Authority and the Health Service Executive are conducting separate inquiries in to the cause of the fire. Every oxygen canister stored used in every ambulance in Ireland is being examined in the wake of the tragedy. Naas Gardai believe that several people who may be able to help with the investigation have not yet come forward.

New Restaurant to open at Fairgreen St, Naas By Rebecca Byrne

A new restaurant ‘The Candied Walnut’ is to open soon in Naas, at the former landmark premises which traded as GG’s but better remembered as Tenor’s at Fairgreen Street. The opening of the new restaurant at the end of the month is welcome with several businesses in the area having closed in recent years and many commerical units lying idle.

Chef Barry Hayden from Rathfarnham and his wife Dawn, a native of Newbridge, will be running the new venture. Mr Hayden said: “I believe Naas is a restaurant destination, with a large and growing population in surrounding towns and its 20 minutes from parts of Dublin,” The award winning chef added: “it will be funky and high end but will also cater for much more simple stuff, with the emphasis on fresh produce - not food that’s been frozen or pre-packed.”

The Candied Walnut in Portarlington has won a load of awards and has been in the top 100 restaurants in Ireland for the four years it has been a business. More restaurants proceeded to open and then the competition became intense The couple have spent over €100,000 refurbishing the premises, including a new kitchen and interior and the enterprising duo hope to open the restaurant seven days a week.

NEWS Co Kildare drew 200,000 overseas newsbriefs

visitors and €89m spend in 2015 By Kildare Post Reporter Kildare was the 13th most visited county by overseas tourists last year with over 200,000 visitors, new figures revealed. Among the most popular attractions were the Irish National Stud & Gardens, Newbridge Silverware Visitor Centre, Kildare Village Outlet, Castletown House in Celbridge, Lullymore Heritage and Discovery Park and St Brigid’s Cathedral and Round Tower in Kildare Town. However, Co Kildare punched above its weight in tourist revenue by galloping up the league table to 7th position with €89m spent here. The figures, based on rolling, three-year averages from Fáilte Ireland’s Survey of Overseas Travellers, show that Dublin was Ireland’s most-visited county in 2015. But Longford is Ireland’s least-visited county, with a mere 30,000 overseas tourists spending just €8 million there last year. Overseas visitors by county (2015) 1. Dublin: 4,938,000 2. Pharmacies criticise Budget for cutting prescriptions cap The Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU), which represents 2,200 pharmacists across the country, while welcoming the decision to reduce the monthly Prescription Levy cap by €5 for those over 70, has expressed disappointment at the failure of Government to deliver in any meaningful way on the commitment it made in the Programme for Government of May last.

Daragh Connolly, President of the IPU, said: “When you consider the commitments in the Programme for Government, that the Government would ‘reduce prescription charges for medical card holders’, it is clear that today’s announcement is only a token, and very disappointing, response to that commitment”. The IPU had called on the

Government to start phasing out the prescription levy for all patients in today’s Budget, and is extremely disappointed that, at the very least, vulnerable patient groups, such as homeless people, those in residential care settings or patients with disabilities, were not exempted from the levy, which the IPU described as a “lost opportunity”.

newsbriefs Pharmacies criticise Budget for cutting prescriptions cap The Irish Pharmacy Union

(IPU), which represents 2,200 pharmacists across the country, while welcoming the decision to reduce the monthly Prescription Levy cap by €5 for those over 70, has expressed disappointment at the failure of Government to deliver in any meaningful way on the commitment it made in the Programme for Government of May last. Daragh Connolly, President of the IPU, said: “When you consider the commitments in the Programme for Government, that the Government would ‘reduce prescription charges for medical card holders’, it is clear that today’s announcement is only a token, and very disappointing, response to that commitment”. The IPU had called on the Government to start phasing out the prescription levy for all patients in today’s Budget, and is extremely disappointed that, at the very least, vulnerable patient groups, such as homeless people, those in residential care settings or patients with disabilities, were not exempted from the levy, which the IPU described as a “lost opportunity”.

newsbriefs Budget should have done more for older people - Stagg Labour Spokesperson on Older People Emmet Stagg stated that much more could have been done in today’s Budget 2017 for senior Citizens. Whilst welcoming the €5 increase in the State Pension it’s disappointing that it won’t commence until the start of March. He said: “In relation to the prescription charges reduction, I hoped this was a first step towards their eventual abolition. In Labour’s Alternative Budget 2017 we had proposed a cap of €10 per month and a fee of €1 per item. The Government today insisted on retaining prescription charges at double Labour’s reasoned proposal by only reducing the Monthly Cap to €20.” In conclusion, Mr Stagg stated that the Government should have done more for our elderly who are the ‘largest cohort of citizens on low fixed incomes, with many entirely dependent on the State Pension”.

Government abandoning Kildare Alzheimer’s patients and families By Kildare Post Reporter

Deputy Fiona O’Loughlin, FF TD has slated plans to reduce Alzheimer’s services in Moore Abbey, Monasterevin and claims Budget 2016 has brought disappointment to the elderly but in particular, to persons caring for family members with age related conditions and Alzheimers. The South Kildare deputy was responding to confirmation that the lease on the Alzheimer’s unit in Moore Abbey would close in November. Since then, the HSE has confirmed the lease will be extended to next March but a new premises must now be sought. Tina Leonard, Head of Advocacy & Public Affairs with Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland stated that overall, Budget 2016 was very disappointing. “This Government claims it supports the policy of keeping people living in their home for as long as possible but that’s now what their policies say. We had an intensive campaign with other

age-related organization who fall under the home care sector. I believe there is a moral question of enabling people to live at home for longer but instead, too many vulnerable persons are funneled into residential care.” Regarding Deputy O’Loughlin’s enquiry as to whether a premises at Drogheda Street in Monasterevin could be designated for the Alzheimer’s Unit, Miss Leonard told the Kildare Post that the HSE had confirmed that alas, the premises were not ‘fit for purpose’ and had structural issues. Deputy O’Loughlin stated that even if another suitable location is secured, the hours of the service will be reduced. “This is the only support families coping with Alzheimer’s members receive in Co Kildare. Carers need support too” she said and added this Government should have increased the budget for home-carers hours. “I have submitted a PQ on the Alzhemier’s issue and am awaiting a reply. As before, I believe the way to do that is to increase home help-hours and carer’s assistance. We have a growing population of older citizens, it’s more hours, not less we need to support our elderly. I concur with organisations such as Age Action Ireland and the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland that an increased investment is required. Lip service to support our elderly is not enough, we need a serious investment in support services with up to €74m

Gardaí looking for driver who drove through crossing

A driver damaged a level crossing in Barberstown, near Straffan yesterday [Wednesday] morning. The collision caused delays on services to Maynooth after the collision happened at 8.50am. A video of the collision supplied by Irish Rail showed a large 4X4 pulling a trailer carrying a mini digger through the crossing as the gates are coming down. As it crosses the tracks, the digger catches the gates pulling them down. The incident had caused delays of up to 30 minutes on the line and Irish Rail crews had to repair the level crossing.

Faith matters

D

ympna Mallon is a Laity Coordinator with the SMA (more commonly known as South African Missionary Society) based at their retreat centre Dromantine, 96 Glen Road, Newry, Co Down. In an encouraging article in The Furrow (published at St Patrick’s College, Maynooth) she highlights the role of the laity in the development of the church in Africa and its relevance to the church in Ireland today. Faith matters selects short extracts from her article which she entitled “Bringing it Back Home – An untapped resource.” “Ireland is not Africa; it has been a Christian country for centuries but in recent years that Christian identity has become less obvious; the participation in and commitment of people to the Church is in decline. Society has changed dramatically and many feel the Church has failed to respond in a compassionate and non-judgemental way to the reality of their lives. …The potential still exists to reach people through conversations which are equal and respectful; through encouraging and supporting people to play their role in music and liturgy; by enabling and empowering people to express their faith through social justice and helping those most in need; and through inviting them to own the ongoing mission both here and in Africa. Such an invitation can come from those with the authenticity and integrity needed to issue it, those who have witnessed it for more than a century and a half in Africa and other places – the missionaries themselves. “Despite reduced numbers present in churches, many people, especially the young, care deeply about justice and rights, about protecting the weak and those with no voice, and about caring for the earth. The passion for justice is a language which is universal and intergenerational. It is reinforced by Pope Francis’

News

invitation in Laudato Si’ to hear ‘the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor’ ((LS49) (LS LS49) LS 49) in caring for ‘our common home.’ With a strong tradition of interaction with and empowerment of lay people, missionaries are ideally positioned to tap into that shared wisdom, and drawing on their African experience, to offer people new ways to express their faith by living out the Gospel values. “The last eighteen months have seen an international focus on two huge issues: climate change and displacement of peoples. Pope Francis has provided leadership on both issues both in word and deed, advocating compassion for the marginalised and the poor and care for the earth, who ‘herself burdened and laid waste is among the most abandoned and maltreated of the poor’ (LS2). Bodies such as the Global Catholic Climate Movement, EcoCongregation Ireland, CAFOD, Trocáire, Christian Aid, Goal, and Concern are all providing practical ways for people of faith to express their care and concern, to move from charity to justice in their response to the needs of the earth and the poorest of her peoples. Demanding climate justice and adequate support for refugees are perhaps unlikely and unconventional ways by which to promote the Gospel and mission. Yet these are the issues with which more and more people are engaging, instinctively recognising that the future of families, communities, eco-systems and the whole of creation depend on their response. The Irish Church must read the signs of these times and recognise within itself an untapped resource. It must encourage and support missionaries, with all their experience and wisdom, to do what they have always done: to initiate real dialogue with lay people as their partners, to facilitate them to feel the ‘cry of the earth and the cry of the poor’ and to respond together in new and creative ways.”

Kildare’s Susie on Junior Eurovision By Rose B O’Donoghue

Thirteen year-old Susie Power of Calverstown featured in last Sunday night’s Junior Eurovision screened on TG4. Susie performed her own song, ‘Popsicle’ which guest panellists Jedward loved and praised for its upbeat, fun tempo. The song is now released online and can be

purchased at http://www.ylvalinda.com/popsicle.html A member of Talented Kids which hosts weekly classes in Kilcullen since 2007, Susie is a first year student at Gael Cholaiste Chill Dara and previously attended Gael Scoil at primary level. “We are so proud of here” said tutor Maureen Ward, founder of Talented Kids “She just wanted to promote

the Irish language and wrote her own pop song, opting to go for a fun, fast tempo song. Already, she has had far more hits than any of the other contestants. In 2015, Susie won the Overall Acting Champion of the World at the World Championship of Performing Arts in Los Angeles – that’s no mean achievement as she was competing against the best in the world”.

The 13 year old is no stranger to television, having played the role of the tormented Ellie Daly, granddaughter of Renee in Dublin’s Fair City soap drama. You can expect to see young Ellie back on screen from mid November in the lead up to Christmas. Susie is now starring as Little Roy in a series of the same name which broadcasts on CBBE, the BBC’s children’s television station at 7.20am on Mondays.

“Her work ethos is excellent, she is so committed but enjoys her weekly classes and we at Talented Kids can’t praise her enough!” added Maureen. You can view Sunday night’s video at https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=ad-G9UJfKl8 or logo onto her Facebook page Susie Power. Mullins secures Cesarewitch title as Curragh season ends By Rebecca Byrne

The final two days of the 2016 season brought racing to a close at the Home of the Classic on Sunday and Monday 9 and 10 October. Willie Mullins took the featured Tote Irish Cesarewitch for the second successive year on Sunday (won last year’s renewal with Digenta), as his wellbacked Laws Of Spin landed the spoils under Chris Hayes. Settled in mid-division, he improved into a closer fifth as they entered the straight. He was soon pushed along on the outer, and was ridden to lead with over a furlong to go, staying on well from there to score

by a length and a quarter. Calare stayed on best to take the Listed Staffordstown Stud Stakes, providing owner Godolphin with a double on the card (earlier on the mark with Holistic Approach). Trained in the UK by Charlie Appleby, the daughter of Dubawi won on her debut at Doncaster in June, before filling the runner-up spot on her next two starts in Listed contests at Sandown and Deauville respectively. Shanghai Glory (14/1) recorded his biggest success to date, as he took the Listed Eimer Hannon Travel Waterford Testimonial Stakes under William Buick for Charlie Hills while the wellbacked Alveena ended her

Mickey Mouse fan Reanna beats the odds by Louise McCarthy Reanna Killeen, a student at St Anne’s Special Needs School, The Curragh, is now 10 years-old, having beaten medical odds. It came as a complete shock to her mother Lorraine Higgins and father Pete Killeen, when Reanna was born with special needs. Ms Higgins said: “It was devastating. We just had to adjust.” No diagnosis has been given for Reanna’s needs. She is unable to walk or talk and has to be fed and changed. Also she has epilepsy and has suffered from Respiratory Arrest twice, due to epileptic seizures. However, Reanna lives an active life, she loves horseriding and recently came fifth at the Trim Horse Show. Her

mother Lorraine told the Kildare Post: “She feels very comfortable with horses. She is able to sit up straight and hold up her head.” Reanna also suffers from Sleep Apnoea which requires her to wear a mask whilst sleeping. However, Reanna does not like wearing the mask and this can lead to her having a poor sleep. “She does not like being ignored, she likes being the centre of attention. She is the most playful child you could meet” added Lorraine. Ms Higgins who is Reanna’s full-time carer similarly has had to adjust to lack of sleep but is extremely grateful to homecarers who assist her on a Monday and Thursday night, to look after Reanna

newsbriefs Meeting re L6058 Road Closure There will be a meeting held

on Saturday next in Ballymore Eustace regarding the closure of the L6048 (Coughlanstown) road. Residents, local councillors and TDs Martin Hedyon and Fiona O’Loughlin are invited to attend the meeting to be held at 3pm at Fogarty’s Garden Pavilion in the the Square. All welcome to attend. After the road collapsed, residents must now de-route to Ballymore Eustace via the Mullaboden road to Donode which is a narrow and poorly surfaced road. In some cases, it puts up to 5km for residents who live less than a km from the village. Locals also feel strongly that KCC planners underestimated the affect of gas, electrical, water and more recently sewerage treatment works in the area. Serious remedial works will be required and more importantly, funding must be secured to see the road restored and reopened.

Set Dancing The PTA of Brannoxtown

National School are holding a Set Dancing night with Syl and Liz. The event will be hosted in the Assembly Hall of Cross and Passion College, Kilcullen on Friday, 21 October. Great dancing guaranteed, 9pm till late; admission €10 pp with refreshments served.

Dogs Trust help you find your canine match, your furry ‘One’ Launching their thought provoking new campaign entitled ‘There’s No Place Like Home’, Dogs Trust hope to highlight the hundreds of rescue dogs currently in their care looking for their new homes. As part of the initiative the charity have transformed their rehoming centre in Finglas with a ‘yellow brick road’ and have today released a short video, filmed almost entirely from a dog’s point of view to show her journey as she is rescued and makes her way along the ‘yellow brick road’ in the rehoming centre, meeting the specialist teams who help and care for her along the way.

Irish rock band Kodaline, have kindly lent their support with the track ‘The One’ which plays beautifully as we observe the beginning of a new friendship between ‘Dorothy’ and the little dog.

Suzie Carley , speaking for Dogs Trust said “We believe there is the perfect home for every dog in our care, some of which have been overlooked many times through no fault of their own since being rescued.

One particular dog, Buddy, has been overlooked 26,000 times since being rescued which is so hard to believe as he is such an incredible dog. We do our very best for each and every dog we save but really there is ‘No Place Like Home’ for these amazing dogs and it’s our mission to find their rainbow at the end of their yellow brick road, that they can call home”. ‘Home Tweet Home’, is a digital element of this campaign from Dogs Trust, where the

Blackberry Hearing

Making hearing aids much more affordable!

Quality European digital hearing aids fitted at home or at one of our many clinics.

Prices from `399 with grant

Blackberry Hearing was set up to change people’s lives by offering high-quality hearing aids at a fraction of the cost charged by established companies. Blackberry Hearing’s market research validated that there was significant consumer dissatisfaction with pricing and after-care service. The company believes in transparency and include in their mission statement a promise of no hidden extra costs. They explain from the start how much the hearing aids will cost and this, with a strong focus on customer service, makes Blackberry Hearing a refreshing new entrant into the market. The company sells their hearing aids directly to their customers through a network of local pharmacies and employ their own professionally BSc qualified audiologists, a rarity in the business. At 40% of the price offered by some more well-known companies, Blackberry Hearing provide not only great customer satisfaction but genuinely affordable hearing aids. Blackberry Hearing was cofounded 18 months ago by John Ryan and Dave Gleeson. Based on their own business experience they believed that a more affordable solution for hearing loss could be of-

fered. Research by John and Dave led them to believe that both high prices and poor customer service were leading to significant customer dissatisfaction and consequently Blackberry Hearing focuses clearly on addressing these market shortfalls. “We did not necessarily set out to be disruptive” according to John “but our low pricing and strong customer care seems to have done just that. Local advertising has

been very important to make people aware of the value, but word-of-mouth referrals have been our best recommendations as it clearly demonstrates strong customer satisfaction. Recently we have recruited 4 more BSc degree level audiologists to help manage our growing nationwide network of local pharmacy clinics. In Kildare Blackberry Hearing has teamed up with well known local pharmacies, to offer people with hearing loss an affordable, high quality hearing service. John adds “We make the experience of buying a hearing aid as joyful as possible with most of our clients walking out with their hearing aids on the same day as the clinic. The offering is simple with clear, transparent pricing and with satisfaction guaranteed or your money back.” Locally you can book a FREE hearing test and full consultation at Cosgroves Pharmacy in Newbridge, Berney’s Pharmacy in Kilcullen and Blakes Pharmacy in Prosperous by simple dropping in to see them or call Blackberry Hearing on 01 6978470

Weekend Hotspot Pery Square Limerick

Weekend Hotspot One Pery Square Limerick

Limerick city has undergone considerable revitalisation since the days recounted in Frank McCourt’s famed childhood memoir, “Angela’s Ashes”. Ireland’s first National City of Culture in 2014, Limerick has also enjoyed intensified activity in the arts sector. In the old “Customs House” on the banks of the Shannon, the Hunt Museum has the finest collection of Celtic and medieval treasures outside the National Museum in Dublin. Ancient Irish metalwork,

European objets d’art, and a selection of 20th-century European and Irish paintings including works by Jack B. Yeats are on view. Inside, a 22-minute audiovisual show illustrates the history of Limerick and Ireland and an archaeology centre has three pre-Norman houses; and two exhibition centres display scale models from its founding in AD 922. The Cathedral Church of St. Mary the Virgin is the oldest building in the city still in daily use. Look out for splashes of stained glass once used to teach religious lessons. Limericks most chic accommodation provider is “No.1 Pery Square” overlooking

the “People’s Park” in the Georgian quarter. This magnificent property is set in a painstakingly restored and modernised town house, originally built around 1830. Enjoying a unique corner location, the twenty rooms have a boutique ambiance that plays on the history of the building with ornate and luxurious touches. Be sure to opt for one of the grand period rooms and treat yourself with an open fireplace, super king size bed, a fabulous roll top bath and authentic sash windows. Sash Restaurant at No 1 Pery Square serves seasonal inspired menus focusing on traditional home cooking and simple but elegant dishes, both classic and contemporary, with the emphasis on local produce and ingredients. Sash also has an excellent wine list, with pairings for all dishes and occasions. To relax and unwind after a busy day shopping, the vaulted basement spa boasts a full range of facilities, including a coal bunker sauna, aroma steam room, Irish mist showers and

a Zen garden. A unique selection of Voya treatments is also available on request. Other convenient services include an express check-in feature and a luggage storage area. If you feel like venturing out of Limerick nearby Adare was once a marketplace during the middle ages, and was then part of the Dunraven Estate. There are also a number of old abbeys and fortresses adding to the village’s architectural charm. The region is also renowned for its wild Atlantic coastline (the Cliffs of Moher, Baltard and the Burren) and the River Shannon, which runs through rolling green hills and farmland. For the sports enthusiast there is a lot to do: horse racing at Limerick, Gaelic football, scuba diving, trout fishing in lakes or rivers – and, of course, the lure of some excellent golf courses including Adare. One Pery Square is a member of Ireland’s Blue Book

a collection of Irish Country House Hotels, Manor Houses, Castles and Restaurants located throughout the island of Ireland. These charming and stylish hideaways are the perfect choice for a midweek or weekend break and those seeking a romantic getaway. Activities vary from golf, fishing, spas and cookery schools or just relaxing in warm and comfortable surroundings. Residential packages at One Pery Square includes two nights deluxe accommodation, with evening meal and fully cooked to order Irish Breakfast all from €159.00 PPS including use of the thermal suite. budget NEWS Discriminatory Tax system against Self-employed challenged

“Minister’s €400 to self-employed branded as insufficient by accountancy group, claiming they are owed up to €16,000 in overpaid taxes”.

Minister for Public Expenditure, Brendan Howlin TD and Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan TD at Dail Eireann yesterday before they revealed the policies of Budget 2016.

In a move to partially equalise the treatment of self-employed people versus PAYE workers, Minister Michael Noonan, TD has increased the ‘Earned income tax credit’ by €400 in this week’s Budget lower than the €550 promised. However, this will be of little consolation to the self-employed who have been consistently selected

against by the Minister to pay more than their fair share of tax according to TaxAssist Accountants, which has calculated the impact this two-tier system has had on self-employed people and the difference could be as high as €16,000 over the last 10 years. According to TaxAssist Naas of the TaxAssist accountancy network, which advises over 6 thousand

self-employed clients, ‘If a person is earning €60,000 as a self-employed individual they could have been, up until last year, worse off to the tune of €1,650 every year. Over the course of the last ten years this amounts to over €16,000- a large amount. Add to this the 3% surcharge that selfemployed people pay in relation to USC on income over a certain level and you can understand why they feel put upon’. Of course, if the self-employed had the political influence of bus drivers, teachers or Gardaí this discriminatory tax system would never have been introduced. While the Minister’s action to reduce this overcharge are welcome and appears to reflect an acceptance that this additional tax is discriminatory, he really needs to consider how these overpayments can be refunded. For more information, please contact: TaxAssist (Naas) on 045-831590

Accidental Landlords’ receive little benefit in Budget tax changes. “New interest relief brings average saving of just €77 next year to landlords”. In what was billed as a tax break for landlords across the country, Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan TD re-introduced, on a phased basis, 100% mortgage interest relief in today’s Budget. This means that landlords will be able to avail of an increased tax deduction for the mortgage interest they have paid. The amount they can claim will go from 75% to 80% next year, and back to 100% over the coming five years. It is hoped that this measure will boost the struggling rental sector somewhat but the actual savings to landlords directly next year will be a meagre €77. To figure out what this new measure will mean for our clients TaxAssist Naas looked at a quick sample of 30 small landlords and what they paid in tax last year versus what this measure will mean next year. The average saving they can look forward to is just €77. Dig a little bit deeper and the news becomes even less exciting. Approx. 50% of all properties in the rental sector are said to be mortgage free. On top of this, a vast swathe of ‘accidental landlords’ have tracker mortgages. They are paying such little interest that this relief will provide nothing for them. Research from the PRTB last year found that as many as 30 per cent of landlords are considering exiting from the business .Unfortunately, this measure will not change their minds about that. For more information, please contact: TaxAssist (Naas) on 045-831 590.

The Money Trail By Murdock

May’s Ascendency! Theresa May has finally outlined a vision for Europe after Brexit. Although she leads a conservative party on an exit treaty from the European Union, you will see a lot of state intervention to make this work for going forward. It was always expected that she could control immigration policy because this is one major reason why they left. She is also promoting social mobility. This will include new ground to be broken by a tory party in the appointment of labour union representatives to boards of corporations. How this works in reality is another day’s work and although it got a cautious welcome from the unions there it does mean however that they are thinking on their feet in terms of where they stand as a nation. A negative impact is the suggestion by the Government that they will name foreign workers to corporations and this, by the way, includes Irish people who have a certain privilege status from 1948 as kind of dual citizens who, nevertheless, could be named as foreigners. This will be upsetting to the expats who have left this land to find

their feet in Britain since the austerity of the 1930’s. Second and third generations now will feel the effects of this nonetheless even though they have UK citizenship. However workers who commute and come and go from here will be named. May outlined an industrial strategy identifying industries of importance and she said that she would support them through Tax and trade policies. This will also include infrastructure spending support. The very work Tax and Tax support rings the famous bell that I have mentioned for some months now about foreign direct investment being courted for the UK

as well as bringing down the Corporation Tax rate to our own rate. They will be bringing it down to 15% and I imagine lower again. Although she is on a campaign to cut out Tax dodging and provide better returns for working class people, she seems to have introduced a new politics. In fairness Tony Blair took over the common ground of the Tory’s during his reign. Theresa May seems to be taking over the common ground of the Labour Party with this kind of talk. What this means for Ireland as well is a concern about foreign direct investment being pursued at length by Britain and the fact that we are part of this European experiment which is suggesting that we are giving too much Tax breaks. As well as that the proposed reduction of sterling to about 90 cents in the Euro will have a catastrophic effect on businesses that are exporting here. It will also effect tourism in a big way and we were flying at that recently. Any suggestion by Government, therefore, to increase the VAT rate back in this sector would be very foolish. Enda Kenny promises to bring

ernment are still in the Ivory Tower wondering about how they tackle Europe, they are not facing down the obvious. If there is too much money paid out and it becomes benched marked the effects will be felt in a couple of years’ time. It will be worse on the younger people who want to get gainful employment. Already the Central Bank of Ireland have downgraded the forecast for a second time for GPD to 4.3% from 4.9%. I have alluded to this before, watch that space. We never knew when it really went up and we never will know when it really will go down. Currently there is plenty of work going on but like any illness the contagion could be there and it does take time for it to kick in. We must be, as I always keep saying, very alert.

a major commemorative event will take place at the Osprey, Naas. The event recognises the life and work of Michael Collins, the first Commander in Chief of the Irish Defence Forces and, of course, one of the key leaders during the War of Independence. There will be talks on local and national figures, including the Curator of the GAA Museum and a niece of Kitty Kiernan, as well as a special extract from ‘Allegiance’’, the critically acclaimed play by Mary Kenny based on a meeting between Michael Collins and Winston Churchill during Treaty talks in 1921.Of special interest will be the display of the Sliabh na mBan armed vehicle from Beal na mBláth during the 1922 ambush which killed Michael Collins. Also on display is the 1916 Model T Ford car, used for transporting Michael Collins for his trips to Longford. Adm €10 inc a commemorative brochure, enquiries please to Martin at 087 251 9833.

I don’t feel it will do anything about sterling, nonetheless, unless you can buy it forward. Maybe the roll out of the new fund from the SBCI which is the Strategic Banking Corporation of Ireland, which was put together to develop specific programmes to support export markets, will help. This is supposed to be producing low rate interest loans to suit exporters. There is a substantial amount of people employed in the export business and in the food processing sector in particular. INTERIORS

Inside Story by Sheena Quigley One of the great things about this time of year is the beautiful colour palette that nature creates in our outdoors. With autumn leaves falling, gorgeous exposed tree branches and the crisp bright skies shining down, the array of colour around us is inspiring. With an autumn nip in the air we are prompted to cosy up our homes in anticipation of the cold season ahead and what better way to cosy up our homes than with a log cabin autumn make over. Over the last few season we have gone crazy for all things global, vintage and rustic and this new log cabin inspired

trend is just a continuation of this. Taking its inspiration from the beautiful autumnal colours around us, this new log cabin trend is all about bringing a rustic warmth and charm into our homes. Using a colour palette of earthy tones, burnt orange, ochre yellow and rich terracotta, this look is all about warming colours. Pair these warm hues with rustic woods like reclaimed floor boards, distressed furniture and vintage finds. Don’t be afraid to mix different wood tones together, this look is less about matching and more about

plaids and checks, alongside native American prints and tribal motifs for an authentic American log cabin feel. Don’t forget to add lots of

texture for an extra dimension of warmth and a tactile finish. Layer furs, wool plaids and aged leathers.

Flormar launched in Ireland just over a year ago and following the success of their recent masterclass in Solis Lough Eske, we got in touch with CEO Paul Mooney to get the lowdown on our new favourite beauty brand. “Flormar is an Italian brand and it’s been around for 42 years. In other parts of the world, Flormar is mainly stocked in their own shop locations, but we’ve had great success in Ireland providing the product through over 300 pharmacies,” he said. Since the launch, Flormar has had great support from the Irish beauty business. The budget-friendly, high-quality products is becoming a favourite for anyone who knows their makeup. “Journalists and beauty bloggers have been great advocates for our brand by using our products and speaking about them on a regular basis, that’s helped the product immensely over the last year,” he said. When it comes to his favourite products, Paul said that Flormar’s primers have been a great success and are the brand’s hero Gel Eyeliner in Bole Brown €7.95 - £5.95

product. “The primer has been our number one product since the day we launched, and that really catches people on to our brand,” he said. Flormar has experienced 20% growth in the face category the last six months, and Paul said this is down to the success of their primers. “Everyone has their favourites and by trying one of the products and seeing how amazing it is, our illuminating primer is €9.95 and it’s absolutely amazing.” “The illuminating primer is our number one and our double radiance primer is our number 2 product and has been since we launched,” he said. “It’s been absolutely phenomenal. I think every blogger in Ireland has used our brand at least once, and it’s just amazing getting compared to higher end brands at the level we’re at.” This season, Flormar is focusing on soft nude tones, big brows and a natural bronzed glow to reflect what we saw on the catwalks for Autumn Winter 2016. Low Fat Nonsense! By Alan Browne

PERSONAL TRAINING + NUTRITION = LONG TERM RESULTS

NOW DOING BOX FIT, KIDS CLASSES COMING IN FEBRUARY. MONDAY PM, PM & FRIDAY AM, AMPM + MEMBERS + NON MEMBERS butter); microwavable popcorn (buy the kernels instead) and pastries such as croissants (bake your own bread and treats). As much as possible, we encourage our FIT+ clients to avoid these foods and instead get their fats from natural sources such as salmon, avocados, dark chocolate and nuts. Unless you are really restricting your calorie intake, there is no need to choose low fat options but if you do, please read the ingredient list carefully to make sure that it is not too high in sugar! If you have questions about your nutrition and would like guidance, please call us on 045-888 745 or drop in to FIT+ at Corbans Lane, Naas.

When we do our hour long nutritional and lifestyle consultation with our new clients in FIT+ a lot of them are surprised when they see that we try to steer them AWAY from low fat products. While we admit that there are unhealthy sources of fat which we should avoid, there are also very healthy sources which we actively encourage our FIT+ clients to include in their nutrition plans.

Fat is essential nutrient

Fat is one of the main nutrients that humans need and is essential for health and energy production. However, due to a flawed study in the 1970s fat was vilified and so the low fat approach became popular and profitable for manufacturers. Fat was held responsible for the increase in obesity and heart disease and so was stripped out of food and replaced with sugar instead. Now the trends are slowly being reversed and people are beginning to notice the health benefits of fat while realising the dangers of consuming too much sugar. So what sources of fat should we consume or avoid?

Dietary Fats

There are three naturally occurring sources of dietary fats that we eat: • Poly-unsaturated Fat – Oily fish (Omega 3), Olive oil, Chia seeds • Mono-unsaturated Fat – Nuts,

seeds, avocados, dark chocolate • Saturated – Animal products such as meat, butter, eggs, milk and cheese. As humans have been exposed to these sources of fat for many years our bodies know how to process and use them. These sources of fat help to improve our brain health as well as allowing us to store and use vitamins and produce vital sex hor-

mones such as testosterone and oestrogen. Unfortunately, not all sources of fat are friendly to us. Roughly 100 years ago humans engineered a new form of dietary fat. This is made by adding a hydrogen atom to fat, hence the term hydrogenated fat. The reason for processing this type of fat is that; it is cheap, has a long shelf life and it tastes great. The downside is that the human

body is still not quite sure how to deal with it and so consuming it can lead to many health problems. This type of fat can be found in many obviously processed foods such as cakes, biscuits and microwavable dinners. Hydrogenated Fat However, it is also present in much more surprising areas such as spreadable butter (just use natural

INTERNATIONAL CREDIT UNION DAY – THURSDAY OCTOBER 20

The ‘Authentic Difference’ of banking with your local CU On Thursday, October 20 2016, Irish credit unions will join 57,000 credit unions in communities across the world to celebrate International Credit Union Day. The annual day of celebration highlights the role that financial co-operatives play in improving the communities they serve and the lives of their members. This year’s theme, “The Authentic Difference” celebrates what makes credit unions truly unique. International Credit Union (ICU) Day has been celebrated on the third Thursday of October since 1948. The day is recognized to reflect upon the credit union movement’s history and to promote its achievements. It is a day to honor those who have dedicated their lives to the movement, recognize the hard work of those working in the credit union industry and show members our appreciation. The ultimate goal is to raise awareness about the great work that credit unions are doing around the world and give members the opportunity to get more involved. Credit unions and associations throughout the world celebrate the day with fundraisers, open houses, contests, picnics and parades. Be sure to log onto your local credit union branch and see what fab competitions or incentives they are hosting on the day.

Equine fears no laughing matter! THE Divine Comedy star Neil Hannon has revealed he’s afraid of horses despite his partner Cathy Davy running a Co Kildare sanctuary for the animals. However, Hannon (45) is still happy to help out when Davy - also a singer - is away on tour. He said: “When Cathy’s out, I help feed the pigs and the donkeys, although I’m not too good with horses. My mum tried to put me on one as a kid it ran away with me on it. So I have never been that keen on horses.” Now Neil is back with The Divine Comedy and touring the country with their Top 10 album Foreverland.

KILDARE & WEST WICKLOW SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS The Kildare & West Wicklow Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (KWWSPCA) is a Registered Charity (Number CHY 6280) that investigates and deals with reports of cruelty and neglect to animals of all sorts; family pets, wild animals and birds, farm animals and horses, ponies and donkeys, throughout County Kildare and West Wicklow. It is a voluntary organisation with no paid employees.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND A STRAY DOG

The KWWSPCA gets numerous calls and messages from people who have found a stray dog. These are a few things that should be done: Walk round your neighbourhood, show the dog to resdients, your postman, the local shops, etc to see if anyone recognises it. In many cases, the dog will just have escaped from a garden nearby and its owners will already be looking for it. Contact the local Dog Warden, for Kildare it is 059 86 23388. By law, all stray dogs are the responsibility of the Dog Warden and if they have space in the Pound, they will take the dog in. Don’t worry, this is not a death sentence for the dog as many people mistakenly believe. The dog has to stay at the Dog Pound for 5 working days

so that the owner has a chance to reclaim it. The Warden will check for a microchip and also check to see if the dog has been reported missing. After 5 days, the KWWSPCA or another Animal Rescue can take out the dog and legally rehome it. Already this year, the KWWSPCA has successfully re-homed over 70 dogs from Kildare Dog Pound. Contact your local Garda Station with all the details and a photo if possible and ask them to publicise. Go to your local vet ASAP to have the dog checked for a microchip. The vets will not charge for this; if there is a microchip, they can contact the owners. The vet can also check if the dog is injured or sick. The vet may recognise the dog if it is from a local owner. Send photos and details to the KWWSPCA

(email and Facebook details below) as well as to Kildare Pet Detectives, the Kildare Animal Foundation and the ISPCA. Spread the word on your Facebook page and ask people to share. Put up posters in your locality with the dogs photo and your contact details.

DOG OF THE WEEK – ‘DOTTY” aka FRECKLES

Dotty (nicknamed Freckles for her lovely colouring – white body and head with beautiful pale brown spots and pale brown ears) has recently come into the care of the KWWSPCA from the Kildare Dog Pound. She is a dote of a dog, loving human company and affection, and very easy to walk on the lead. She is also good with other dogs. As she came from the Pound, we do not Dotty

know her background, but she was in good condition when she arrived with no sign of bad treatment, so we can’t understand why someone would have abandoned her. Dotty would love to find a new home, where she would be given regular exercise and lots of love and attention. We do not know her breeding, we think she is a Labrador cross of some sort, and she is young, maybe 2 – 3 years old. She will make a lovely family pet. Dotty will be fully vaccinated, microchipped and neutered before she goes to her new home, and if you would like to visit her, she is at the KWWSPCA Animal Shelter in Athgarvan which is open every day, apart from Sundays, from 2-4pm , or at other times by calling 087 251 7381. We ask for an Adoption Fee of €100 when we re-home a dog to partly cover their veterinary and other costs, and a home check is needed.

World Spine Day 2016 – “Straighten Up and Move” October 16, 2016.

Straighten The Minimum Maximum: Up & Move the Trend of New Technology

Function and Effect with Olympus Bodytec Everything under control:

Every year on October 16, people from around the world join together on World Spine Day to raise awareness about spinal disorders as part of the Bone and Joint Decade’s Action Week. You can GET INVOLVED! Millions of people in all continents of the world suffer with spinal disorders. These can include low back pain, neck pain, scoliosis and disc disease, to name but a few. Spinal pain and disability can have a profound effect on a person’s overall health, sometimes preventing them from working or even doing simple daily activi-

ties. Research has demonstrated that poor posture and inactivity are major contributors to the development of back pain and other spinal disorders. According to the World Health Organization, one in four adults is not active enough and over 80% of adolescent population is not active enough. The World Spine Day (WSD) theme for 2016 is “Straighten Up and Move”. We want to highlight the importance of physical activity and improving posture as part of good spinal health and prevention of injury.

The basis of health, fitness and a well-proportioned figure is an active system of muscles. Physical fitness also has an impact on our mental well-being. These positive effects can be purposefully generated with electric muscle stimulation – provided it can take effect overall. Like it does with MIHA bodytec. The integral method produces fast, perceivable results by taking effect on your whole body deep under its surface. This makes MIHA bodytec more than merely a training tool.

relief instead of stress.

MIHA Bodytec starts out where traditional methods leave off. With targeted, individually controllable training, even the more deeply seated muscle groups are activated and strengthened. Conventional training can only reach them with difficulty, if at all. The spinal column gains stability. The back is unburdened perceptibly. Certain muscular dysbalances are evened out and the trunk musculature is strengthened – the ideal way to a healthy, strong back. Strengthening at all levels Whether as prevention or for back complaints that already exist – studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of this form of training*: 88 % of the subjects were able to sharply reduce their back pain. The frequency and duration of the pain turned out to be as much as 80% less. More than 40% of participants complained about constant back pain at the start of the study. The figure

was just 9% after 6 weeks of training. The pain totally disappeared in 44% of the patients with chronic complaints. The duration of the typical back pain in everyday life (lifting heavy loads, walking, bending over, heavy physical labor, chores, sports, driving or sitting for long periods) improved by up to 30%. Figures that offer hope in the fight against public ailment No. 1!

Treating addiction to prescription drugs What Is Drug Addiction?

Addiction may be defined as a pattern of compulsive drug use characterised by a continued craving for drugs and the need to use these drugs for psychological effects or mood alterations. Many abusers find that they need to use drugs to feel “normal.” The user exhibits drug seeking behaviour and is often preoccupied with using and obtaining the drugs of choice. These substances may be obtained through legal or illegal channels. This inability to stop using the drug is a characteristic of addiction. Although most people would stop using a drug if they knew it had destructive consequences, an addicted person cannot. After prolonged use of an addictive substance, the brain virtually becomes “re-wired.” Accordingly, addicts are not simply weak-willed; they have differences in the way their brain reacts to drugs than do most people. Once started, they often cannot stop without help. Chances are you, or someone you know, is struggling with addiction to prescription drugs. Maybe it’s your spouse, a

Addictive Prescription Drugs

relative, a friend, or a casual acquaintance. Maybe it’s you. Maybe you’re not even sure if the drug use has shifted from therapeutic to abusive. These are the questions that one needs to ask.

History of Treatment

In 1972, a neurosurgeon in Hong Kong, Dr. H. L. Wen, was preparing a patient for surgery using ear acupuncture (auricular) as an analgesic method. The patient, who coincidentally was suffering from withdrawal symptoms from opium, informed Dr. Wen that his withdrawal symptoms had subsided. In light of this information, Dr. Wen tested the procedure on other patients with similar addictions and their discomfort diminished as well. It was then that acupuncture’ efficacy for the treatment of drug addiction where discovered. Dr. Wen’s discovery attracted the attention of Dr. Michael Smith of Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx, New York City. Dr. Smith was involved in Methadone treatment and was searching for an alternative treatment for heroin patients. Dr. Smith started to use Dr. Wen’s technique and gradually refined

Sharing the ancient wisdom that is Chinese medicine

it to the present five point’s protocol. Time and experience has shown that the use of these points can decrease

the craving for drugs and alcohol, reduce withdrawal symptoms, relieve tension and help patients relax.

In my own clinics though I treat people on a regular basis who become addicted to prescription medications like opiates, cns depressants, and stimulants. Prescription drug addiction usually goes unnoticed by the general population and the medical authorities because of the widespread use and acceptance of pharmaceutical drugs in our society. Opiates are commonly prescribed by Western doctors because of their effective analgesic, or pain-relieving, properties they include morphine, codeine, and related drugs. CNS depressants include such drugs as diazepam (Valium), chlordiazepoxide HCl (Librium), and alprazolam (Xanax), which can be prescribed to treat anxiety, acute stress reactions, and panic attacks. Stimulants, such as dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine) and methylphenidate (Ritalin) are stimulants prescribed for the treatment of only a few health conditions, including narcolepsy, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, and depression that has not responded to other treatments. I also treat addiction

to tobacco, alcohol and cannabis these can be successfully treated with auricular as well as body acupuncture and herbs. As all the above are chemical only addictions mostly with no psychosocial background, Traditional Chinese Medicine alone (depending if there is no psychosocial disturbances) without counselling is the treatment of choice in most cases. In my treatments I always use the ear point called Shenmen this point is considered to be the most powerful point on the ear to treat addictions. I have used this point along with other acupuncture body points quite successfully over the years in the treatment of prescription and recreational drug addiction. The Chinese herbal formula Xiao Yao Wan is a very calming formula and would always be used in conjunction with acupuncture and auriculotherapy in the treatment of all addictions. Kim- Dip.Ac. Lic.Ac. Kildare Post Restaurant Review

Chef Peadar’s recipes allow Dowling’s to prosper Food Review by Patrick Ward

Prosperous is not an area in which you would expect to find fine dining served via a rather large establishment, but everything about Dowling’s makes a short spin from Naas more than worth the trip. From the time we stepped into the restaurant to the moment we trudged back out the door with our stomachs full and onto the Prosperous Main Street, we were cared for attentively by the kind and friendly staff. Dowling’s has a setting that would make any hungry customer feel at ease. The restaurant area is bright and vibrant, which is a big plus for those who struggle to read a menu in places that try to exude a more reclusive ambience by dimming down the lights to a level that borders complete darkness. The décor around the restaurant is eloquent yet simple, and you can imagine that everything from first dates to family dinners is well catered for here. Even the pickiest of eaters would struggle to hold a grudge with the menu. It is brimming with variety from top to bottom that inGenerous portions for the main course Chicken Tagliatelle which was tasty with succulent chicken

experience.

Award Winning Chef

All the food was cooked by award winning chef Peadar Bent. Bent is part owner of Dowling’s, and although he is originally from Wexford, he is now firmly settled down in Kildare Town. One hopes that he will be serving up a storm for years to come in Prosperous.

Competitive Pricing

cludes everything from a selection of steaks, to a mixture of vegetarian options and different types of salads.

Superb Selection

I went for the Chicken Mushroom Bouchee, while my partner selected the Tempura Prawns as her starter. The Bouchee was excellently cooked and served on a hot plate, and the fact that none of the pastry stuck to the plate from the heat shows an attention to detail that is not often seen. Served in a cream and wine sauce, it was a delightful appetiser that provided just enough to satisfy and not ruin the appetite for the main course. The Tempura Prawns come in a lightly battered shell, served alongside a sprinkling of salad and a chilli mayo dip. I am reliably informed that they were top class as well. The main course well and truly lived up to the bill too. We went for the Chicken Charlotte and the Chicken Tagliatelle, both of which were served within five or six minutes of us finishing the starter. That was the perfect amount of time for us to digest the initial serving and then salivate over the thoughts of what was to come.

Pasta Delight

The food in Dowling’s is exceptionally priced too. Main courses start from as little as €10.95, while they also run specials each day. Breakfast is served from 9am, while last orders for food in the evening time are taken at 8.30pm MondaySaturday, while food is served from 11.30am to 9pm on Sunday. A brilliant lunchtime offer on Tuesdays and

The tagliatelle was simmered in fresh cream during the cooking process, while it was served with a hint of garlic on top to ensure the chef left his own special mark on the dish. It works very well, and the portion was more than generous. Though it was exquisitely presented, I never managed to see the bottom of the plate as there was no room to stifle any more food down my throat by the time I got three quarters of the way through. A good complaint for anyone to have.

Chicken Charlotte

The Chicken Charlotte comes with a side of mash or chips, and the vegetables that are served alongside are worth visiting Dowling’s for alone. It is not often you come out of a restaurant hailing the vegetables you ate inside, but the way in which they were cooked and lightly marinated makes having one of your five-a-day needs a more enjoyable experience. The chicken was succulent, simmered in brandy and mustard, and it was served in a beautiful mushroom and cream sauce. Like the tagliatelle, the generosity of the portion matched the taste

Chicken Charlotte a good choice for the main course

Fridays offers pensioners a four-course meal for the paltry sum of €10, a kind of deal you will surely not find anywhere else in the country. For a restaurant based away from the bright lights of the bigger towns and cities, Dowling’s of Prosperous certainly left a big impression.

GARDENING

Gardeners’ Heaven

By David Corscadden

Caring for bare root trees Normally during autumn, people are obsessed with trees for their autumn colour but not many people think about planting trees now as they assume it is the wrong time because they are coming to the end of their growing cycle. But in fact, it is one of the best times to plant trees in your garden. Not only is it one of the best times to plant trees during autumn but it can often be one of the most cost effective times to do it as well. Planting bare rooted trees at this time of the year is one of the cheapest ways to get trees into your garden as you can often buy young trees for only a couple of euro depending on the size of the tree.

The Bare Advantages

For those unfamiliar with bare rooted plants, it simply means when you buy a plant and which comes with no soil around the

roots. While working out cheaper, to both buy and plant (they require less work), many gardeners feel that bare rooted plants establish much quicker and perform better in the garden. Normally for plants grown in pots and containers it takes much longer for them to establish and until they are established they are more susceptible to disease and require much more looking after. While their bare rooted counterparts can be planted in the ground and within a couple of months are much more capable of fighting for themselves.

The Right Preparation

When it comes to planting bare rooted trees or shrubs, it is important to get the preparation right and the rest will fall in to place. Firstly, the most important step when it comes to anything in the garden, make sure you have the

right tree or shrub for your garden. After this it falls down to site preparation. Make sure the hole you prepare is big enough, approximately three times bigger than the size of the roots. It is also always a good idea to put some compost or leaf mould in the bottom of the hole as a boost to help establish the plant.

Plant Quickly

Whenever using bare rooted plants in the garden, it is important to plant them quickly and never let them dry out. If you will not be able to plant them for a few days, ensure the roots are kept moist and cover them in a tarp. Once you have your tree in the ground, just like any other tree, it is important to put in a suitable tree support in alongside it. Then as the tree begins to grow and mature it is important to monitor your tree support and adjust it as you need to.

Honey, Where’d You Park The Car? How an Optical Illusion helps stop ‘Selfie Spies’ stealing Ford’s secret car designs

3D Camoglague

Ford’s latest 3D “Brick” camouflage, inspired in part by popular online illusions, uses thousands of seemingly randomly placed black, grey and white cylinders in a cha‑ otic criss-cross pattern. This makes it especially difficult to discern new exterior fea‑ tures in sunlight, whether seen in person or on the millions of photographs and selfies that are posted to the internet. “Almost everyone has a smart-phone now and can share photos instantly – making it easy for anyone, including our rivals, to see vehicles in testing,” said Lars Muehlbauer, manager,

Ford wraps future cars in mind-bending 3D “Brick” camouflage to create an optical illusion that makes it difficult to focus on the prototype cars hidden beneath”

If you’ve ever seen a car covered in bizarre swirls, mind‑bending patterns, or crazy squiggles then the chances are you’ve seen a top secret new prototype with a special coating of camouflage stickers. Designed to deceive indus‑ try spies hoping to catch a glimpse of new cars being tested on public roads, these designs create an optical il‑ lusion, making it extremely hard for eyes to focus on the outlines.

Camouflage, Ford of Europe. “The designers create beau‑ tiful cars with cool design features. Our job is to keep those features hidden.” New vehicles are tested on public roads as part of a rigorous development proc‑

ess. Each new camouflage takes around two months to develop and is then printed on superlight vinyl stick‑ ers, which are thinner than a human hair, and that are uniquely applied to each vehicle. Designs are first tested on a closed Ford test track to ensure the camou‑ flage does the job. Confusion and Chaos fools the competition “I tried to create a design which is chaotic and that confuses the eyes,” said Marco Porceddu, vehicle prototype engineer, Product Develop‑ ment, Ford of Europe, who developed the new camouflage. “I researched optical il‑ lusions on the inter‑ net and came up with a shape that could be copied and overlapped thousands of times. This creates both an optical illusion and a 3D effect.” Designed to withstand extreme temperatures, Ford’s camouflage blends in with winter environments in Europe while sand colours are used in Australia and South America.

Animal Camouflage

“This camouflage will stand out in almost any environment, but it’s de‑

signed to destroy the integrity of the vehicle’s shape, surfaces and col‑ our, delaying your brain’s ability to recognise it, or its key features by sight,” said Martin Stevens, Associate Professor, University of Exe‑ ter; who has studied Animal Coloration and Camouflage

for almost 15 years. “The optical illusion doesn’t prevent the car being seen, but plays with your ability to measure depth of field and shadows, making it difficult to see shapes and car features. It is a trick used in nature to get away from something or to hide that is equally useful to a car test driver.”

Happy Halford lands brilliant treble in Dundalk Curragh trainer Michael Halford has an excellent record at Dundalk and he was certainly the man to follow on Friday night as he recorded a treble with the victory of Ambassadorial in the featured EBF Star Appeal Stakes the highlight of the trio. Winner of his only previous start at the same course in September, Ambassadorial (4/1) was patiently ridden by Shane Foley and arrived to strike the front over a furlong out. “He’s a smart colt and did it well. He travels and quickens, and went to the line strong. I think he’ll keep improving,” beamed Halford following the victory. “He’d not done much and surprised us first time out, and he’s not been away since. That was a big step up from his maiden. “That will probably be it for this year but we will have a chat with the team and see what they think.” Shane Foley added: “He was very impressive up here the first day in a maiden and it’s hard to know what he beat that day but he was very visually impressive. “It was impressive again tonight, there was plenty of

strength in depth there today and he has done it well. He travelled around good and when he gets to the front he thinks he has enough done. “We knew he had improved a lot from his first run and I think there’s plenty more to come from him. He worked well the other morning. He seems to find everything so easy. He’s really one to look forward to for next year. He’s laid-back, he has everything.” Halford also had the distinction of saddling the 1-2-3 in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Handicap with Kadra (5/1), ridden by Pat Smullen, leading home stable companions Indrahar and Suvenna while the treble was completed when Reddot Express (2/1 fav) made virtually all the running to win the second division of the 8f handicap under Conor McGovern. “They are three nice fillies and it’s a shame they were all clashing but the prize-money was good. They are all suited by the surface and the distance, and the horses are in good form,” explained Halford after his second win of the day. “Kadra needs pace and it was a bit too soft for her at Roscom-

mon the last time. She could come back here for the (Listed) Cooley Stakes (October 28).” Pat Smullen initiated a double when guiding Dermot Weld’s Tilly Trotter (5/1) to success in the opening 5f winners race before another Curragh trainer, Richard Brabazon, saddled Veil Of Stars (11/2) to take the 7f claimer under Ross Coakley. Aidan O’Brien’s Taj Mahal (9/4 fav) had been a bit frustrating to follow in maiden races but he finally got things right to win the 7f Nursery Handicap under Donnacha O’Brien while there was a real shock in store for punters when Northern based trainer Lee Smyth sent out 25/1 chance Black Agnes to win the first division of the 8f low grade handicap in the hands of Shane Kelly. The night ended with a memorable success for young apprentice Danny Sheehy in the concluding 12f handicap as he partnered Adrian Keatley’s Rahyah (8/1) to a fine victory. Danny is the son of trainer Eamon ‘Dusty’ Sheehy and this was his first winner on the racetrack having enjoyed a successful career on the pony racing circuit.

Cesarewitch success at the Curragh yet again for Mullins For the second consecutive year, trainer Willie Mullins landed the featured Irish Cesarewitch H’cap at the Curragh on Sunday when Laws Of Spin made the most of his light weight to score under Chris Hayes. The 7/1 winner was always in the leading group and did well to fend off the late challenge of Cradle Mountain (14/1) to win by a length and a quarter with Swamp Fox back in third place. On what was a good day for English stables, the Eimer Hannon Waterford Testimonial Stakes (Listed) was won by the Charles Hills trained Shanghai Glory (14/1) under a strong drive from William Buick while an hour later it was the turn of the Charlie Appleby trained Calare (8/1) to take the Staffordstown Stud Stakes (Listed) in the hands of James Doyle. Calare carried the famous royal blue colours of Godolphin who had earlier witnessed another victory when their juvenile

Historic Approach (4/1), trained by Jim Bolger and ridden by Kevin Manning, arrived late and fast to take the opening 2yo maiden in the style of a nice prospect. Local trainer Ger O’Leary was on the mark when Primo Uomo (5/1) wore down the front running Accalia to win the Irish Times Handicap over 5f while another Curragh trainer on the mark was Johnny Levins who saddled Bainne (12/1) to take the Apprentice Handicap over 8f under a patient ride from the talented Oisin Orr. Trainer Dermot Weld and jockey Pat Smullen have enjoyed a fine season at the Curragh in 2016 and they rounded off the day with another success for the consistent Almeela (11/4) who finished strongly to touch off Soul Searcher in the concluding Brown Panther Stakes (Listed) over 12f with the 1/1 favourite Stellar Mass finishing a disappointing last of the seven runners.

2016 Intermediate Championship Final Johne Murphy made a joyous return to a part of Limerick where he enjoyed many a great day as a player for Munster as he dotted down for a crucial try in Thomond to ensure Naas left the famous Limerick venue with the points following a hotly contested battle with Shannon. When captain Will O’Brien led the Naas team out of the dressing room last Saturday, it was one of the proudest moments in the long history of the club. For this occasion certainly showed just what great strides they have made in recent years. For now they were running out at Thomond Park, one of the most iconic venues in Irish Rugby to face the mighty Shannon, nine times All Ireland League champions. The scene was certainly set for a great game. A dry, cool, crisp day was perfect for rugby and the large crowd had already enjoyed the ‘warm up’ game of Leinster v Munster. Naas were slight favourities for this contest but were to be caught cold within two minutes of the start. Shannon came out with a statement of intent and before Naas had even settled down they were under their own goalposts. A series of quick passes gave Shannon a big overlap on the right and Lee Nicholson was in for a try that was easily converted by Ronan McKenna. A disastrous start and certainly it was now a big test of character for the away side. The story of the rest of the half is easily told. Both sides struggled to create many chances and did a good job of cancelling each other out. The only real scoring chance came on 22 minutes. Naas were awarded a penalty 35 yards out, but were unfortu-

nate to see the kick by Peter Osborne strike the post. However the ball was subsequently knocked on by the Shannon defence, giving Naas a 5 yard scrum and a great attacking position. However referee Oisin Quinn deemed that Naas infringed at the subsequent scrum and gave the home side a line clearing penalty. The rest of the half passed by without major incident leaving Shannon ahead by 7-0. If it was Shannon who made the blistering start to the opening half, it was the turn of Naas for the second, as within a minute of the restart they scored. After a marvellous flowing move, winger Rob O’Connor managed to evade some despairing tackles to cross the Shannon line. A superb Peter Osborne conversion levelled the scores. The game returned to the pattern of the first half until two scores in just over a minute decided the outcome.

Firstly the home side nosed back in front on 70 minutes when Ronan McKenna coolly slotted a penalty to give Shannon a 10-7 lead. Then almost straight from the restart came the decisive score which ultimately gained victory for Naas. Cillian Dempsey did superbly to block down a Shannon clearance and in a blink of an eye Johne Murphy was over for a Naas try. Murphy has graced Thomond Park on many an occasion but in the eyes of the away supporters he will never have scored a more important try there. Peter Osborne converted and Naas now led by 14-10. Last week Naas lost to Buccanners when leading with only a few minutes to go. Although Shannon tried hard to snatch victory here, Naas had learned from their mistakes and saw out the final stages comfortably enough to gain a famous victory. Naas now have three weeks off before their next Ulster

Bank All Ireland League game. Certainly this break will be welcomed as there are a lot of weary players around after four successive weeks of hard league rugby. Those four weeks have been successful. To step up to this high grade and gain two victories in addition to two narrow defeats is a great credit to the players and gives much optimism for the future. Naas resume their campaign on October 29th when they are again on their travels, this time away to Ballynahinch.

Winds of change in Kildare as O’Neill’s panel and management team undergoes change

Cian O’Neill and Brian Flanagan get a loud reception from the Monasterevan youngsters. Photo: Pat Tinsley

By Patrick Ward The make-up of the Kildare senior football squad and management is set to change dramatically in 2017 following the omissions and the withdrawals of a clutch of players from the panel, while the backroom management team has also completely changed. Bryan Murphy, Brian Flanagan and Padraig Brennan will not be involved with the squad this year, and their roles will be occupied by Ronan Sweeney and Enda Murphy. Kildare manager Cian O’Neill explained that Murphy was only ever scheduled to be in his position for one year as he sought to help with the transition of the younger players from his U21 side into the senior setup. Murphy has also taken on an increased role in

his career with Dawn Meats in Naas, meaning he wouldn’t have been in a position to commit as much time to the role regardless. Brennan will be more involved with the army this year, while Flanagan has also seen his work load increased in his own job outside of football. “I would like to sincerely thank Bryan, Pádraig and Brian for their outstanding commitment, contribution and work ethic with regard to the Kildare Senior Football Team in 2016. Individually, they all brought their own unique thoughts, experiences and insights to the set-up while collectively we worked brilliantly as a team,” said O’Neill. One of the many reasons that I sought out the 3 lads to join the Management Team initially was their professional commit-

ment and success off the field in addition to the many years of distinguished service that they gave to Kildare GAA on the field. Ironically, it is this career success and progression that is the core determining factor in their departure from the setup and I wish them well in the new challenges that lie ahead for each one of them.” Ronan Sweeney will come in as a selector under O’Neill and he will have a specific role with the organisation of the forward unit. The Moorefield man has been part of Niall Carew’s management team in Sligo for the past two years, but O’Neill has persuaded his former clubmate to get involved with his home county. Former Kildare goalkeeper Enda Murphy will also be installed as part of O’Neill’s management team, and the Leixlip man will work specifically

with the goalkeepers and also in helping to organise the defensive structure. The former International Rules ‘keeper has previous experience in a coaching role with Dublin club Castleknock, helping to lead the side to an intermediate county title in 2014. “I am delighted to welcome Roli and Enda to the Management Team and really look forward to working with them to further develop the senior footballers of Kildare and ultimately make them a competitive force in football’s top tier. In our brief time working together in recent weeks, they have been hugely impressive and our collective vision as a management, aligned with the critical ambition and desire from the players, makes it an exciting time for the Kildare Senior Football Team and we are all really looking forward

to the 2017 season.” There will also be a large turnover in players for the new season ahead, as Morgan O’Flaherty, Daryl Flynn, Ciaran Fitzpatrick, Padraig O’Neill, Hugh McGrillen and Eoin Powderly will not be involved with the initial squad. Flynn and O’Flaherty stepped away from the panel, while Ciaran Fitzpatrick has also opted out as he prepares to get married. The latter three have all been released back to their club sides, though O’Neill intends to keep a keen eye on Powderly once he returns from a cruciate ligament injury he suffered in a club game this year. That means there are spots to be filled in the squad, and O’Neill confirmed who some of the newcomers will be. Naas duo Eoghan Bateman and Brian Byrne have been

drafted in following impressive seasons at U21 level with Kildare and at senior level with their club, while fellow U21 star Luke Flynn will also be involved. Confey speedster David Slattery has gotten a call up following a stellar season with his club as he helped to steer them towards the semi-final stage of he Senior Championship, while Athy’s Mark Hyland is also set to be involved. Celbridge defender Mick O’Grady is also recalled after taking last year out to concentrate on his studies, and his return will be a massive boost to the side. A number of players who will be involved in the Senior and Intermediate Championship finals will also be brought in, but O’Neill will not inform them until those games have been played.

Dutch delight for Kilcullen Kilcullen................ 2-19 Amsterdam............. 1-8

Leinster JFC preliminary round Kilcullen made light work

of their Dutch counterparts with a superb display in their Leinster Championship preliminary round contest in Maastricht on Saturday

afternoon. An evenly contested first half finished with just one point between the sides as Kilcullen went in with an 0-8 to 0-7 advantage at the break. Playing against a strong wind, the Kildare champions kicked a number of wides and dropped a few shots into the goalkeepers’ hands, but they continued to show well for the ball in attack and tagged on enough scores to take the initiative. Colm Fox was the

main scorer for Kilcullen during the first half, dispatching frees whenever the chances presented themselves. Kilcullen- known for that spells of brilliance at vital stages of games all yearstruck five points without reply at the beginning of the second half, and with 13 minutes of the restart they held an unassailable lead of 1-15 to 0-8. Jarlath Gilroy’s men continued to pile the pressure on top of their Eu-

ropean opponents, and a second goal put the game to bed. Amsterdam managed to claw a goal back, but the fact that they were restricted to just 1-1 in the second half meant that Kilcullen ran out comfortable winners. They will now play St Patrick’s of Carlow in the Leinster quarter-final, and they will have home advantage for that game which is due to be played on October 22.

Battle of the bridge

Kelly putting friendships to one side in a bid for glory By Patrick Ward When two clubs from the same town meet on such a regular basis there are always likely to be friendships that are tested. Moorefield and Sarsfields are among a unique bracket of clubs in Ireland in the sense that not many towns can boast two teams that undoubtedly the strongest club sides in the county. Such a scenario means that men who live just miles from each other and grew up together by going to the same school will eventually face other on the football field, and in Newbridge that has culminated both Moorefield and Sarsfields having plenty of players that are friends off the pitch, but fierce rivals inside the four white lines. Moorefield captain Ciaran Kelly knows that scenario all too well, and although he concedes that he doesn’t know that many of the current Sarsfields side off the pitch, there are still bonds that have been kept over the years. Kelly went to school with Gary White and Alan Smith, two of the men who will be attempting to deny the Moorefield stalwart from lifting the Dermot Bourke Cup this Sunday. “The three of us would be good friends,” says Kelly about

Moorefield captain Ciaran Kelly and Sarfields captain Donnacha McDonnell will battle for the Dermot Bourke trophy this weekend

his relationship with the pair. “We played a lot of school football together and we would have played up through Kildare teams together, so I’d be quite friendly with the two. Some of the younger lads, I wouldn’t know them as well, but I’m living out of the town now so I wouldn’t see as many of them.” You always hear of players on opposing teams who know each other swapping texts in the build up to big games in the aid of ‘banter’, but Kelly insists that the only conversation he might have with Kelly or White will be over a quiet pint on the Monday after. “We tend not to talk to each other. I think Monday afternoon in Johnsons or Neesons we’ll have a quiet conversation with each other.” The days leading up to the game will be full of excitement for everyone around Newbridge who has even an inkling about the rivalry, and while Kelly concedes it’s a great aspect of this year’s county final, he and his teammates won’t

be getting caught up in the hype. He has been in this position on numerous occasions before and is now at the stage where he wants to enjoy the final as much as he can. “It’s always exciting when there are two teams from Newbridge in the final. We’ve gotten used to each other over the last few years. Obviously it’s good for the supporters, but as players we try and avoid the media talk, but it’s good for the fans and good for the town. “It exciting, and as the years go on you start to think that one of these days it’ll be your last final so you really try and enjoy it as much as you can.” The last championship meeting between the sides ended with Sarsfields coming out on top in a one-sided affair in the third round of the 2015 championship, a win that would ultimately propel them towards a county title. Revenge is not something the Moorefield players have in their minds, but doing themselves justice is the primary objective. “I think from our point of view you just want to do yourself justice. We felt last year, regardless of who we were playing, we never really got a gallop going. We lost to Celbridge and we lost to Sarsfields. We just want to go out

and know that we’ve trained to our best so we play to our best. If that results in a victory, or whoever it manifests itself on the scoreline then so be it. It’s a long winter when you know you haven’t done yourself justice and I think that’s probably our main goal.” Their form this year has been good, and part of the reason has been the individual form of their inside forward. Kelly made national headlines when he plundered five goals against Johnstownbridge at the quarter-final stage in a facile win for Moorefield, while also contributing goals at vital stages in other games throughout the championship. Part of that is down to the form of Jason Philips- his partner in the fullforward line- but Kelly says he is as surprised as anyone in regards to his exploits. “I got a few text messages and tweets off people from college and around the country saying ‘I never knew you could put the ball in the back of the net’. I’m as surprised as anyone to be honest with you, I haven’t scored a huge amount of goals over the years but I’m probably playing a bit closer to goal than I have previously. It’s one of those things like a striker when he gets into form or when he’s out of form, the ball tends to drop nicely for you. “Jason is a good foil there too, he tends to attract a few men around him. Jason likes it in low, rather than in high actu-

ally, even though we like to give it in to him high. “He has improved in every game. He hasn’t played a lot of football because he was away for a couple of years and he had a couple of bad injuries but you can see that he is improving in every game. He’s a great foil to play off because the two of us have played together for a lot of years and we kind of know each other’s games well at this stage.” As reigning county champions Sarsfields obviously pose a considerable threat, and it is interesting to hear Kelly’s thoughts on where they are

strongest. The veteran forward reckons the Sash are a powerful running side, and shutting them down out wide could be the key to winning the game. “They have a lot of pace in their team, and they have a lot of skilful footballers so they’re going to use the full width of the pitch and spread us out. They’ve got players who can punish you inside, so from our point of view we have to try and keep up with them and try keep as tight as we can against them.” The last time the two sides met was in a league game earlier this year, and if this game has an ending that matches the drama that unfolded in Pollardstown in the summer, few people will leave St Conleth’s Park without value for money. On that day Kelly scored a last minute goal to nab a win for Moorefield, and while he wouldn’t mind repeating the trick, he’d much rather not to see the game come down to a last gasp shot for glory. “We probably stole one off them with that last minute goal. I’d take it again; I think we all would, but whatever way it comes, I won’t mind. Hopefully less pressure than that,” he concluded.

Joe Mallon SFC final: Moorefield v Sarsfields, Sunday 3.30pm.

Last year’s hero hoping for another Sash success By Patrick Ward

Cahill in action for Kildare against Offaly in the O’Byrne Cup in January

coming into it, three tough games. I suppose you could say that we might be going into it as underdogs seeing as Moorefield have seven county players, and they have Ronan Sweeney and they seem to be going very well. Perhaps part of the reason that they might be perceived as underdogs is the fact that they have lost their two captains from the two previous years. Sean Campbell captained the Sash to glory in 2015, but he is oversees, while 2014 captain Conor Tiernan has not played a minute of championship football in 2016. His name appeared on the substitutes bench for the game against Confey, so it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility that he makes an appearance, but Cahill says other players have stepped into the void. “I suppose at the start of the year in the Aldridge Cup and the league we were missing them big time and we were conceding a few goal. But now Shea Ryan is after going in at full-back and he’s flying in there. He had a great game against Athy and was probably man of the match against Confey. Ciaran Aspell is after going well in there too and stepping up to the plate, while Conor Hartley is after becoming a wing-back and he’s flying.” “Hartley is a class act. He can play anywhere. He can play in the forwards, he can man markwhich he has been doing in the last two games- and when he does get the ball he can go

forward and join in the attack. He’s a great man to kick the ball into me and the rest of the forwards,” remarked Cahill. One of the additions to their side this summer has been the return of their most experienced player, Alan Smith, who missed large parts of the 2015 campaign through injury but came back to kick the go-ahead point in last year’s county final after coming on as a late sub. His form has gradually improved throughout the year, and Cahill believes he has had a great impact, though he saved his best praise for Ben McCormack, who he feels is now the best player in the county. “Last year Alan was kind of injured all year long. He came on in the final and changed the game. He missed the game against Portlaoise and we missed him that day. He’s injury free all year this year and he’s flying. He’s a great leader on and off the pitch. “Then you have Ben McCormack who is probably head and shoulders above everyone else in the county in my opinion, and he’s playing out of his skin. Me and Ben are good friends, we have a good understanding. He’s probably the man to run at defenders and I kind of run off the shoulder because he’s a lot faster and stronger. He’s probably the man you’d want to watch being honest with you. He was full of praise for his teammates, while also noting the threat that Moorefield will

face. Another player he earmarked as having a great year is corner-forward Dan Nea, a player whose scoring rate has heightened even further this year. “He had a great game against Athy, I think he got 2-3. He’s probably always been doing kind of the donkey work but this year he’s a bit closer to goal and he’s getting show that he can score, he can win the frees. He tracks back, he tackles, and he’s a great player. Looking at the Moorefield threat, Cahill outlined that their seven county panellists will obviously be the backbone of their side, but the likes of Anthony Durney and Ronan Sweeney are massive players for them too. “They’re after getting Anthony Durney back this year, who was playing soccer the last few years. This is his first year back playing senior so he is another strong player. They have Ronan Sweeney, who has been unbelievable the last few years. He’ll be one we’ll have to watch.”

The 363 days that will have passed between the time Sarsfields secured last year’s county title and the time they run out to take on Moorefield in Sunday afternoon’s county final have progressed rather quickly. It doesn’t feel as if it was almost a year to the day that Ray Cahill scored three points in stoppage time to help the Sash turn a two-point deficit into a two-point win, but those moments are memories now. Cahill and his teammates remain completely focused on securing back to back titles, and the prospect of facing their great rivals in the final adds even more spice to the occasion. “It’s very good, the town looks very well with the flags on both sides and to be honest with you I can’t wait for it,” opines Cahill. Last year’s Senior Club Footballer of the Year has been playing football on a near nonstop basis ever since the start of 2015. As soon as Sarsfields exited the Leinster Championship thanks to a defeat to Portlaoise, the 26-year-old was brought into Cian O’Neill’s Kildare panel for the O’Byrne Cup. He performed well in the two outings he was afforded in the competition, and it took many people by surprise that he was omitted from the league panel. Cahill described it as devastating, but that setback still hasn’t quelled his desire to represent the Lilywhites again. “I went in the week after Portlaoise match. I was going well in training. I didn’t feature in the first match, and in the second match it was against Louth in terrible conditions. I didn’t really have a good game. Then we played Offaly and I got four or five points, and I thought overall I got 10 points in the two games. I was hoping I’d make the panel, and then when I was dropped I was obviously devastated. “I’d love to play with Kildare, and hopefully someday I will,” he continued. Sunday’s game is a more pressing matter for the immediate future however, and the centre-forward knows how tough a game it will be. He has been involved in plenty of battles with his club’s near neighbours, and he recognises the quality they have all over. Although they showed their steel against Confey in the semi-final, Cahill believes they may enter Sunday’s final as underdogs. “We’ve had three good games

Army man Cahill will be hoping for a conclusion that mirrors last year’s final, though he would surely be happier if it

didn’t come down to the game resting on his shoulders in the dying moments once again.

Murnaghan makes his mark for Moorefield The Moorefield team celebrate their win

Moorefield............. 0-12 Sarsfields................ 1-8

Reserve A Championship final By Patrick Ward “One down. One to go.” The words of a jubilant Moorefield supporter after she witnessed Mark Murnaghan loft over a point with the final kick of the game to ensure that the bragging rights in Newbridge remain with her club ahead of this weekend’s senior county final between the two old foes. It was a thrilling finish to an excellent game as Sarsfields looked to have pulled it out of the fire when Darran McHugh scored a late goal to tie the game up at 1-8 to 0-11, but Murnaghan held his nerve to

point from 25 metres out and gift his side a county title. The first half provided a feast of attacking football for those who bore witness to it, and the quality of some of the points kicked was duly matched by the excellence of the foot passing that was on display from both teams. The inside line in each forward unit looked particularly menacing when fed the ball, while there were consistently runners coming off their shoulders from deep that helped to vary the attacks. Although Sarsfields hit the front early on through a pointed free from Niall Manning, it was Moorefield that made all the early running. They kicked four points in a row before the 11th minute, the first of which was an Eamonn Callaghan free, before Philip Wolfe landed a fine score from play soon after. Callaghan then split the posts with a booming long range

point from all of 50 metres out, before a second point from Wolfe added to the Moores’ lead. Sarsfields momentarily stemmed the tide with a good score from Shane Doyle, but another point from Callaghan and an exceptional effort from a tight angle on the left wing courtesy of Frank Hanniffy had Moorefield five points clear by the 20 minute mark. Manning and Sean Dempsey swapped scores at either end soon after, before Sarsfields finally caught fire as half-time approached. They turned over the ball deep in Moorefield territory, and Conor Delahunty capitalised by floating a great point over under pressure from 35 metres out. Another long range score from the hard-working Darran McHugh ate further into the Moorefield lead, and the Sash went into the break trailing by just 0-7 to 0-5. The quality of football

dropped off significantly in the second half, and although the few minutes that followed the restart were generally good, both sides began to make sloppy errors and kick poor wides for large parts of the half. Moorefield were denied a goal inside 60 seconds of the resumption, and it was thanks to a brilliant save from Sarsfields goalkeeper John Melia that they didn’t find themselves five points down. Wolfe found Murray with an excellent ball across the face of goal, he turned and supplied Keith Duane, but Melia emerged from his goal to superbly block the full-forward’s effort. The Sash made them pay to a certain extent soon after as he curled over a brilliant point after cutting in from the left wing, but Moorefield settled somewhat after that. Another free from Callaghan was followed by Murray’s first of the day, but there was a gap

of 14 minutes between that score and the next one, which was also a Murray free. With Sarsfields trailing by three points they needed to surge forward going into the final 10 minutes, and they got within two when Delahunty and Alan Barrett sent over scores. An off the ball incident saw Sarsfields defender Shane Hurley sent off late on, and Frank Hannify’s wonderful point from the left wing seemed to have given Moorefield an extra bit of breathing space as the game lapsed into stoppage time. The Sash mustered up a goal that looked to have earned them a replay when Michael Brown injected some pace into the attack and cut in from the left wing before shoveling a pass across goal to the waiting McHugh, and his finish levelled matters. But Murnaghan stepped forward to slot over a close range point with the final act of the game to ensure

it’s round one to Moorefield. Scorers for Moorefield: E Callaghan 0-4(2f), M Murray(2f) and P Wolfe 0-2 each, F Hanniffy and S Dempsey 0-1 each. Scorers for Sarsfields: D McHugh 1-1, C Delahunty 0-3, N Manning 0-2(2f), S Doyle and A Barrett 0-1 each.

Scan man’s dramatic intervention saves Round Towers Two Mile House..... 1-11 Round Towers....... 0-14 By Patrick Ward

Kildare Intermediate Football Championship final After 86 minutes of pulsating football it took Neil Scanlon to show nerves of steel and land a free in the 42nd minute of the second half to ensure Round Towers get another chance at landing the intermediate title. It was an effort that mirrors the one that Cillian O’Connor missed for Mayo in the All-Ireland a week beforehand, but Scanlon wrote the script differently and ensured Glenn Ryan’s charges earned a reprieve. It was a fantastic game of football in which there was some exceptional tackling on display, though some of the defensive play was extremely poor at times, which ultimately led to a superb and enthralling game of football. Two Mile House looked very nervy in the opening exchanges, and a couple of missed frees inside the first four minutes from Aidan Casey summed up their start to the game. Round Towers were also defending stoically, and they looked dangerous when they

broke forward. There was incisiveness to their play as they carved through the Two Mile House defence time and again, and it was scarcely believable that they failed to score a goal in the first half. They had the perfect opportunity in the fifth minute when Neil Scanlon squared the ball to Aaron McConville, but the corner-forward palmed the ball off the post from point blank range and the House managed to get it clear. Scanlon hit the game’s first score after six minutes, before Barry Waters doubled their advantage with a point from close range following a darting run. Peter Kelly was arguably Two Mile House’s best performer in the first half, and it was the former All-Star that created their first score by winning a kick-out, breaking forward and offloading to Casey who pointed from the right wing. Round Towers had a second major goal chance soon after that when Scanlon was afforded acres of space on front of the goal, but he dragged a poor effort a yard wide of the post. The game was then held up for a period of 12 minutes following a collision between Round Towers’ Barry Waters and Two Mile House defender Andrew Cregg which resulted in the latter leaving the pitch on a stretcher after suffering what appeared to be a neck injury. When the game did restart it was Two Mile House that seized the initiative. Casey

pointed his first free of the game, before an intricate move saw the ball exchanged through the hands of Mark Sherry and Chris Healy before falling to Shane D’Arcy who was through on goal, but Round Towers goalkeeper James Robinson dragged him down, which resulted in a penalty. Casey stepped up to leather the ball in with the aid of the post, and Two Mile House hit the front for the first time in the game. That lead was wiped out in the space of three minutes however as Round Towers picked off a trio of scores through Scanlon, Mark Byrne and McConville, with Byrne’s score being the pick of the bunch. A good burst through the middle from Peter Kelly led to Chris Healy’s solitary first half score, though Barry Waters responded almost immediately with a point into the Kilcullen End for Towers. Another free from Casey before the break ensured that Two Mile House headed for the dressing room with a 1-4 to 0-6 lead, though they would have counted themselves fortunate to hold any advantage following some kamikaze first half defending. The second half followed a very similar pattern to the first, and it was Towers that got up and running first with a score from Scanlon, but his effort was cancelled out a few minutes later by Casey. Both sides then spurned decent goal chances as Casey blazed wide from close range, while Mark Byrne also sent an effort

wide of John Goff’s goals. William Burke made a positive introduction as soon as he was sprung from the bench, helping to set up Shane D’Arcy for an easy score that pushed the House back into a two-point lead. Round Towers then assumed control of the tie, and it was Stuart Murphy who led the charge with four points from play in a row in the space of five minutes. His first was the pick of the bunch as he looped a high, hanging shot just over the bar from 40 metres out. His clutch of scores put the Kildare Town side into a two-point lead, and Two Mile House were in dire need of stemming the flow of Round Towers scores. Casey did the honours by landing a difficult free kick, and a brilliant point from the industrious Peter Kelly levelled matters with six minutes to go. A point from Casey pushed them back into the lead, but Scanlon kicked over another free to tie things up again. Casey slotted over another couple of frees in the 59th and 63rd minutes to push them two points clear and seemingly on the path for glory, but the tie wasn’t over yet. Round Towers won a free close to goal late on, and following a melee that took more than four minutes to dispel, Scanlon popped the ball over the bar. Towers needed to win the kickout, and they duly did, and when Anton Bolton fouled Mark Scanlon 40 metres from goal it afforded his brother Neil the opportunity to send

Ryan thanks his lucky stars for another day out By Patrick Ward

Round Towers manager Glenn Ryan was as cool as a cucumber straight after the drawn Intermediate Championship final against Two Mile House on Sunday afternoon, which is amazing when you consider how close his side were to losing the game. Two points down with 10 min-

utes of injury time played, Neil Scanlon stepped up to narrow the gap to one score, before then landing a difficult free from 40 metres out to tie the game with the last kick of the ball. Ryan knows his side were lucky, and he has Scanlon’s ice cool place kicking to thank for earning the Kildare Town side a replay. “We were very lucky to have gotten something out of the

game in the end, so we’ll thank our stars,” said Ryan. “You look at Cillian O’Connor last week and it’s such a fine line. Any player who steps forward to put themselves in that position deserves great credit, whether they get it or not. So I’d imagine it’s a lonely place, but thankfully it went over. That comes from a lot of practice, and Neil does a lot of practice.”

Asked whether or not his side hold the momentum going into the replay after such a stirring comeback, Ryan was quick to outline how today’s game will not have an effect on the replay, and the coming days will be about getting the bodies right once again. “The game is finished and it’s over and there’s no momentum between now and next week. We have to get back to a level

the game to a replay. He duly obliged. Scorers for TMH: A Casey 1-8(6f), P Kelly, S D’Arcy and C Healy 0-1 each. Scorers for Round Towers: N Scanlon 0-6(4f), S Murphy 0-4, B Waters 0-2, A McConville and M Byrne 0-1 each.

Glenn Ryan admits his side were lucky to come away with a draw

where we can start playing the football we want to play, which I don’t think we did today. “We’ll try and freshen them up. If there’s any tired or sore bodies we’ll try and sort them

out as quick as we can, but this stage it’s luck as to whether we picked up injuries or not, but we’ll see,” he concluded. The will take place on the weekend of October 22/23.

Play it again Scan Scanlon’s late point sends IFC final to a replay

Round Towers and Two Mile House will have to do it all over again after a quite incredible Intermediate Football Championship final ended all square on Sunday afternoon. In what was one of the longest club games that

St Conleth’s Park has ever witnessed- it went on for 86 minutes in total- it was a Neil Scanlon point from a free that proved to be the final act of the game, levelling the scores up at 0-14 to 1-11. The replay has been

penned in for the weekend of October 22/23, and if it produces anywhere near as much drama as the first instalment, it will be well worth the entry fee at the gate. Match report and reaction on pages 70+71….
