“DON’T LEAVE PRESENTS UNDER TREE” warn Gardai by Louise McCarthy A Co Kildare Garda is warning people not to leave Christmas presents under the tree this year. Garda Audrey Sheridan says that she has attended burglaries where families have saved all year, to come home and discover all the Christmas presents had been stolen. Gardaí are urging people to set alarms and ensure all windows and doors are securely locked in the run up to Christmas and to make sure that no Christmas gifts or goods are visible through windows or conservatory doors. Earlier this week, a

Chair of the Joint Policing Committee, Cllr Martin Miley

house at Kingsbry, Maynooth, was broken into, between the hours of 2.30pm and 5.30pm when no one in the house at the time. Garda Sheridan said: “This time of the year, people have a lot of valuable goods in their houses. Please set the alarm if you are out during the day. Don’t leave the presents on dis-

play under the Christmas tree.” Meanwhile, four burglaries over one weekend in South Kildare is spurring renewed appeals for 100 additional Gardaí in the county. Chairman of the Joint Policing Committee, Fianna Fáil Cllr Martin Miley is urging that there is an increase from the current 308 Gardaí to

400. A number of hours were ransacked recently. Two homes in Moone along with houses in the Russeltown, Kilmeague, area, were hit by burglaries. Cllr Miley said: “We have to continue to work on the fight for more Garda resources here in Co Kildare.”

parked cars had their wing mirrors kicked at and damaged in Celbridge. The incidents happened in the Crodaun Forest area of the town between Friday night and Saturday morning. The vehicles, which included a Volvo and a Volkswagen, had to have their mirrors replaced at a significant cost to their owners. A Garda

spokesperson said it was a case of pointless vandalism and appealed for help to identify those responsible.

Stolen car found in ‘chop shop’ Gardaí found a stolen Ford Mondeo

partially dismantled in a garage in Co Kildare on Monday last. Officers from the Garda’s Stolen Vehicle Unit found the vehicle in a so-called ‘chop shop’ but didn’t disclose the exact location. ‘Chop shops’ are garages or sheds where stolen high-value cars are dismantled and then sold on as car parts so they can’t be traced. Gardai posted a photo on their Twitter account of part of the chassis of the light-coloured Mondeo. A stolen grey BMW was also found as part of the Operation Waste - which focuses on detecting and investigating vehicle thefts. Elsewhere, Naas Traffic Corps Gardai seized a car in Kildare Town for no Insurance, NCT or Tax. Gardai said the driver was on a learning permit without a qualified driver as required under the law.

As the festive season is upon us and the real Christmas spend gets underway, the business community in Sallins are finding all day parking is becoming an issue for seasonal shoppers and diners. However, this is an ongoing situation. Cllr Carmel Kelly receives regular complaints from business owners, especially restaurant and café owners, hairdressers and local shops who find motorists are leaving their car parked on the Mains Street from 7am on weekdays and only collecting their vehicles when they return from the train station that evening. “One elderly lady who uses a walking stick recently tried to park near a hair salon on Main Street but found she had to park as far away as St Laurence’s National School. That’s a hell of a walk for an elderly person who requires a walking aid. The proprietor of the salon said the same car is parked there all day, even before she opens up during weekdays”. Kildare County Council intends to review the parking bye-laws for Naas and Sallins, under Section 36 of the Roads Traffic Act 1994. The draft parking bye-laws went on display from December 1 and can be viewed at Aras Chilll Dara until 17 January

2017. “You can view the plans at the Transportation Dept Level 4 at KCC office in Naas from 9.30am-4.30pm” added Cllr Kelly Monday to Friday excluding public/bank holidays or at Naas Library). However, on Saturday next Cllr Kelly and Deputy James Lawless TD will hold a Community Clinic on Saturday next December 1o from 10am at Café Grange, Sallins for residents to view the proposed changes. Further clinics will be held in the New Year but Cllr Kelly appeals to local residents and the business community to drop in and see the proposed plans on Saturday.

The FF public representatives checked the train station car park last week and found that almost a third of the parking spaces were free. Representations on the draft bye-laws may be made in writing to the Senior Executive Officer, Transportation Dept at Kildare County Council, Áras Chill Dara, Devoy Park, Naas, or by e-mail to: roadssubmissions@kildarecoco.ie on or before 12 noon on 8 February 2017. Cllr Kelly reminds shoppers in Naas also that pay parking will be suspended in all Council operated car parking spaces and carparks

from Saturday, December 17 to Monday, January 2 inclusive. “However, be warned that community wardens will enforce regulations such as parking on double yellow lines and footpaths or utilizing disabled parking spaces!”

Trevor CCTV to be sent to UK experts to find new clues by Louise McCarthy A prayer service is being held today in Naas to mark 16 years since the disappearance of a 22-year-old man. Michael Deely, father of missing man, Trevor, says that it is getting more difficult as time passes. This Thursday evening, friends and neighbours are expected to join the family at Ballycane Parish Church to mark the annual memorial to Trevor, who was just 22 - years-old at the time of his disappearance. He was last seen on Haddington Road in Dublin 4 and on the Leeson Street/ Baggot Street area on Thursday night/ Friday morning of December 7/8 in 2000. The Serious Crime Review Team are currently investigating the mysterious disappearance and half a dozen Gardaí recently met with Michael to review the case. It has also emerged that CCTV footage of his last sightings on Baggot Street Bridge are being sent to UK experts in a bid to identify anybody in the images who hasn’t come forward. Mr Deely said: “It is very tough on all the family, we have to keep going.

Michael Deely, father of missing Trevor describes how difficult his disappearance has become over the years.

It gets more difficult with time. You get tired physically and mentally, you have to face it anyway.” Trevor grew up in Naas and at-

tended the CBS primary and secondary school. Mr Deely said: “Trevor was absolutely no problem. There was no difficulty in getting him to go to school.” After completing second level, Trevor attended a course at Waterford IT where he studied Business. After a year, he decided not to continue the course and began working in IT at Bank of Ireland in Dublin.

Elderly people suffering from rural transport failure Age Action, Ireland’s leading advocacy organisation for older people, told an Oireachtas committee this morning that the lack of an effective rural transport system was isolating older people and preventing them from accessing essential services. The organisation’s meeting with the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional and Rural Affairs in Dublin yesterday was part of a series held by the committee to examine issues affecting rural communities. Justin Moran, Head of Advocacy and Communications, said: “An effective rural public transport system is essential for older people to access work, education, leisure, medical and social services. “Already, in many parts of Ireland and particularly in Co Kildare, there are no direct public transport links to hospitals serving rural areas. Older people are increasingly concerned by media reports suggesting real threats to Iarnród Éireann routes and the future of the Bus Éireann Expressway service.

Mr Deely said: “Life was going well for Trevor, he had plenty of friends.” Trevor went missing after attending a Christmas party on December 8, 2000, and was last spotted on CCTV footage which showed him crossing Baggot Street Bridge and walking towards Haddington Road. It was a very windy wet night and there was a taxi strike at the time. He also had a blue ACC Golf Umbrella. Prior to this, he had attended a Christmas Office Party, after which he returned to the bank where he worked in information technology. Video footage places him near Baggot Street Bridge at about 4.15 am heading towards Haddington Road. He was wearing a yellow and brown shirt and beige cord trousers. When he didn’t turn up to work on the Monday, his mother Anne got a phone call. Mr Deely said: “She was asked if Trevor had been around at the weekend, he wasn’t meant to be. After the second phone call, we got more panicky. Birthdays and Christmas are so hard, we really miss him.” Meanwhile it has emerged that there may be renewed hopes of a breakthrough as vital CCTV footage of the last sighting has been sent to experts in the UK for specialist forensic analysis. The images will be enhanced so that anybody in the background so hasn’t come forward may be identified.

Katie Smith originally from Ballymore Eustace is literally leaping into international acclaim on the contemporary and free style dance scene. Dancing since she was six years old, the 12 year old has scooped up leading international and national dance awards this year including the World Dance Championships in Winter Gardens, Blackpool. The youngster’s incredible dancing skills have resulted in her photo being used for yet another major dance competition, this time the Freestyle Belfast Show 2017 to take place in the Devenish Complex next June, having already appeared in several major promotional posters to date. A student of Dean Ryan Dance Academy, young Katie spends an average of 12-15 hours in studio along with weekly training with the renowned ballet tutor, Hilda Kanderberg. Katie’s first major title came when she was competing in the U10’s competition in Brean, UK where she won the European Championships and then the U10 Western European Dance Championship hosted in Citywest. She is hailed for her speed capacity and elegance on the dance floor. “She is double jointed” said her mother Linda who hails from Ballymore Eustace “And can virtually bend her bank in two, it’s incredible to watch! All she ever wants to do is dance. Even before she goes to school, she

does 6-7 laps of the park every morning. You should see her abs, she is super fit!” This year alone, Katie won the acclaimed U12 Disco Divo in Bridlington, UK and was placed in the U12 in Brean. In the Elite Championships in Wales, she won the contemporary category, “the premier section, the absolute highest level of dance competition” noted Linda. On the day of her 12th birthday, Katie spent the entire day in the Towers Ballroom, Birmingham, UK. “She now has to compete in the U14 but won that age group in her first attempt!” She further claimed a title at Craig Tara, Glasgow before winning the contemporary Dancer of the Year in The Belfry in Mayo. Here the 12 year old won Senior Dancer of the Year, competing against all age groups over 12. “It is an expensive hobby” said her mother Linda. “But

Talented Katie Smith and her mother Linda O’Neill

she’s doing so well on the circuit that many of her costumes are sponsored. Her dance costumes cost around €2,000 so the more she wins, the better! She also gets training gear and bags sponsored but young Katie has won holidays, including one to Ibiza, an iPad, clothing and kid, aside from the cups and trophies. “I need an extension to host the silverware” laughed Linda. Just back from competing in Blackpool, where she finished in the top 10 of the Grand Prix, Katie dreams only of becoming a dance profession and she’s prepared to keep training and staying fit to get there.

Woman wants access to grand-daughter in State care over Christmas season By Kildare Post Reporter A Judge refused objections by a social worker to limit access to a woman seeking more visitation rights to her granddaughter while in State care. Evidence was heard at Kilcock Family Law Court on Tuesday, how the young girl, is being cared by foster parents, as her own mother and father put her into care. Defence Solicitor, David Powderly, said: “The grandmother is very anxious to get access for Christmas”. In Court, the child’s paternal grandmother, outlined that she has been seeking increased access from Tusla, the Child & Family Agency, for over 12 months. She said: “I can only see her three times a year. I gave her

a Christmas present already. I have never seen her at Christmas. I can only see her for one hour and 15 minutes. I just want to see her more often, even the week after Christmas, I would be happy.” Judge Desmond Zaidan asked her why she had not taken her granddaughter when it was found that the parents were not willing to mind her. The woman said: “It was not convenient at the time.” Solicitor for Tusla outlined to the court how social workers state that the grandmother was offered twice weekly access visits when she first was put into care. Then later she was offered monthly visits by arrangement. The Court heard how an ‘incident’, some years ago, involving a dispute between the grandmother and biological

mother, in front of the child, caused her to be fearful of her grandmother. In Court, the social worker said: “The child was traumatised by the incident. She had nightmares,” The social worker outlined to the court how she felt that four times a year for an hour would be suitable for the grandmother to see her grandchild, considering that the child’s mother other relatives were now looking to get involved and visit. Judge Desmond Zaidan said that while it was ‘sad’ there was an argument in front of the child, it is not a ‘perfect’ world. The Judge ordered that the grandmother is given access to her grandchild for three continuous hours over the next four months, with a view to it being unsupervised thereafter.

Man fined for motor tax under-declaration

A 53-year-old Co Kildare man was fined at Naas District Court for under-declaring motor tax. The accused, with an address in Straffan, was charged with fraud relating to January 30, 2014, April 17, 2014, July 22, 2014, October 29, 2014 and January 12, 2015. Evidence was given by Garda John Carey, earlier this week on how the accused put down the engine size of his car, reducing the cost of tax from €1, 404 to €710. Defence Solicitor, Sarah Connolly, outlined how the accused has recently sold on his car. Defence told the court how the accused had been running his own haulage company and that went into difficulty between 2009 and 2013. The court heard how the accused was forced to travel to Poland in order to find work. Judge Desmond Zaidan ordered that the accused is convicted and fined €1,000, with six months to pay.

agreed to joint custody if there were issues around safety. He said: “I was worn out, after two years of a case.” Mr Powderly said that his client had to leave her home because of a ‘minor incident.’ In court, the ex-wife said that she never touched her ex-husband or children in a violent manner. Regarding the milk incident, she said: “I had milk in the fridge, he said, ‘That is my milk, do you see, she is after taking my milk.’ She denied swerving a vehicle at him. In court, she alleged that her ex-husband follows her around with a recorder. She said: “He has turned off the water, locked my bedroom window for some reason and disconnected the phone while I was on it.” Judge Desmond Zaidan refused the barring order application and imposed a safety order instead.

Spate of thefts from cars in Athy

A young man facing over 20 charges, some of which, involve the theft of several cars, around various parts of Athy, has been ordered to appear at Naas District Court later this month. The 22 year-old is facing charges including public order at Naas A&E on January 13, 2016, along with theft from cars around Athy over one night in 2015 and 2016. The accused is also facing charges with a break -in to Ardscoil na Trionóide, Athy, last month. Detective Paul O’Shea outlined how following arrest, the accused said: “I did not mean to cause unhappiness to anyone, I was desperate at the time.” The court heard Detective O’Shea outline how the accused came into Athy Garda Station on November 2016, in connection to an unrelated matter. Detective O’Shea told the court how the accused was wearing a track suit similar to what had been seen on CCTV in relation to a number of burglaries in the area.

‘Stressful’ for divorced couples living together

A Naas Judge today said it is very ‘stressful’ for couples who are forced to continue living together after a divorce. A father of a number of young children was refused an extension of an interim barring order against his ex-wife today. The court heard how the father and mother have been divorced for several months but are still living in the same house, while waiting for it to be sold. In court, the ex-husband alleged how one morning recently while he was preparing breakfast for his children, his wife went to the fridge to see that there was no

milk there. He said: “She punched me in the throat in full view of my children. She swore at me, ‘don’t take my fxxking milk’.” The court heard how the couple have two separate fridges and buy food separately. The court also heard allegations from the father of the children that his wife revved the car engine and drove at him. He said: “She moved away at the last minute.” The court heard allegations that his ex-wife has ‘punched and kicked’ him. Defence Solicitor David Powderly put it to the ex-husband that why if the alleged incident involving the revving car happened in October, why then he did not apply for an emergency interim barring order until one month later. The ex-husband said: “I am afraid of your client”. Mr Powderly put it to him that he applied for an interim barring order, only after his ex-wife had applied for a safety order. The ex-husband also alleged that his ex-wife had assaulted one of their children. The ex-husband said: “The times are coincidental.” Mr Powderly asked the accused why he had

Evidence was heard how ‘some small and some valuable’ items had been stolen from several cars in Athy. Some of the items ranged from gloves to cameras worth about €800. Defence Solicitor, Arthur Hennessy, told the court how the accused was fired from his job last month and broke into the secondary school, in a bid to find somewhere to stay for the night. The court heard how the accused had 41 previous convictions for road traffic offences. Mr Hennessy said: “He never shows any violence. He has said he is sorry for what he did.” Judge Desmond Zaidan ordered the accused to undertake a probation report and appear before Naas District Court on December 22.

abitat for Humanity is now widely known throughout Ireland for its work in building homes for local communities in Africa and indeed throughout the world. Every year volunteers are recruited through parishes, schools and universities. Faith matters is indebted to Habitat for this week’s Advent reflection by Fr Raymond McCullagh, Catholic chaplain at Ulster University Coleraine. “Let there be Light – ‘the people that walked in darkness have seen a great light’. At this time of year I’m reminded of a beautiful tradition in St Patrick’s College, Maynooth, where I studied for the priesthood. On the eve of the first Sunday of Advent the college choir got up early, about 4am, and quietly passed through the corridors chanting an ancient antiphon: Jerusalem, Jerusalem, convert to the Lord your God. “When the other staff and students heard the singing they would rise from their sleep and light a small candle at their window, a symbol of their Advent promise to receive Christ, the Light of the World. “In little over an hour the whole college was transformed from complete darkness into a sea of small lights, each symbolic of a new Church year and the coming of the Christ

Fr Raymond has faithfully supported Habitat’s work for many years, especially in Ethiopia

Child, God’s light. “We are called to be bearers of that divine light, challenged by the words of Eleanor Roosevelt: ‘It is better to light a candle than curse the darkness.’ “In a very real way Habitat for Humanity is shining God’s light in a world darkened by homelessness. “This summer, our Living Youth team worked in the slums of Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. We met Herat whose house had just been reno-

vated by Habitat. When asked what her new home meant to her and her children she said: ‘It is a Resurrection.’ “What an act of faith, reminding us that the Christ Child of Bethlehem came to bring us eternal life and light. “May Habitat continue to reflect God’s light, helping those who walk in darkness to find their true home. This Advent may Christ’s light shine to fill our nights and days. May others see the deeds we do and give our Father praise.”

The Money Trail By Murdock

Friends in High Places One good thing about Donald Trump being elected as the next President of the United States of America is the fact that one of his best pals is the famous Wilbur Ross. Wilbur is the serial investor who works on bankrupt stocks, shares and economies, shows confidence in them and buys them back and lets them off when economies come around. He did a brilliant job in Ireland with Bank of Ireland and now he is turning his attentions to building investment and lending. This will also make him a bundle. He made three times his money on buying into the Bank of Ireland when nobody else would touch it and when it was suggested it would be state owned. Even now at 79, he is as sharp as a razor from what I can see and is closely tied into Donald Trump’s business plans for America. Wilbur, with others, bought 35% stake in Bank of Ireland around 2011. His exact investments was in the region of 9.9% for €290 million. Since then he has flogged shares for €345m and €477m. And since then he made about €500m on the turn around. Donald Trump stated in his speeches last week that he is turning the government executive into to a business cabinet and with the people involved, even if they were high hitters and hedge fund folks, they know how to make money. It is however hoped that they will have a social concisions as well. For Ireland, this means that if we can rely on Wilbur Ross as a good friend in the highest place, it will help us to cushion the effects of potential withdrawal of companies from this Country. The word out from the United States currently

President-elect Donald Trump with investor Wilbur Ross photographed recently at Trump International Golf Resort

is that companies who are here already and gaining the benefit of the 12.5% Corporation Tax will not be hit and will not have interest coming back out. The USA, as I have said before, will encourage other companies not to leave and will give them incentives to stay. They are reducing their Corporation Tax down to 15% which, to be honest, makes perfect sense. They will get more economy growth and more taxes under payroll and consumer spending taxes. One peculiar thing regarding Trump’s election in the US means

that the oil fracking production will continue at a pace. This, at a time when all the other countries are reducing their supply, except Nigeria and Lybia, to try and increase the prices. With Donald’s Trump election it would appear they have failed in trying to bankrupt the American oil producers. If America makes more money from this source, it would not be as heavily pressed on pulling on foreign direct investment to our country. Ireland has a unique relationship with the United States and we need to shape up to it. In this re-

gard we should not be shooting off the mouth too quickly until we see what comes out in the wash. Profits in corporate operations are piling up all over the world. Divided polices that are normally given to investors and higher wages are normally giving to employees. To be realistic about it, both need to happen and taxes achieved from that, particularly in Ireland must be put in to productive Capital Investment and not filling the coffers of a never ending bottom less pit of current account payments. k.p.murdock@hotmail.com

INteriorS

Inside Story by Sheena Quigley of the Fabric Centre

Classic Christmas

Christmas is just around the corner and you can almost feel the excitement in the air, from kids big and small. It is time to deck those halls and get the bells and holly out once more. With the current trend for nostalgic décor showing no sign of relenting, a classic style Christmas has never been as popular or as fashionable. We are all loving our interiors looking more vintage,

rich and adding handmade touches to give our homes a personalised feel. This trend is extending to our Christmas decorations as well. Old school Christmas décor is timeless and has universal appeal. It centers around three colours, Green, Red and Gold. These are the original Christmas colours and they conjuror up memories of Christmas’s gone by. Carry these three colours throughout the home in your decora-

tions to create unity and flow to your Christmas scheme. The center piece of an old school Christmas is the Christmas tree. A green tree is a must! No coloured or futuristic trees here. A real tree would be ideal but there are some very realistic artificial alternatives available (with no pine needle mess!). Use white lights not coloured lights for a richer older feel. When it comes to decorations be plentiful and don’t hold back. Use old fashioned red bows and beads, strewn around the tree. Try to find baubles and decorations to hang from the tree that have a vintage, aged look or handmade look, they will add to the authenticity. Keep to your red, green and gold colour scheme. Having more than one tree could also be a good idea. Put a tree in the entrance hall as you enter the home, to set the tone for the rest of the house and then one in the sitting room where the family will congregate. The fire place is another central aspect of the old school

Christmas. You should decorate the mantel by hanging stockings from it, setting the scene for Santa’s visit. Use candles with Christmas holly at their base and a Christmas floral centre piece in the middle.

Garlands are an important part of old school Christmas decorating, green branches filled with decorations should be hung down hall banisters, over large mirrors and even around fire places. With the inside of your home looking Christmas card perfect, the final icing on your Christmas cake will be a classic wreath on the door to greet your guests as they enter your home. Then sit back and watch the fond memories of happy family times be born! At The Fabric centre we have the perfect curtains, blinds, wallpaper and fabrics to compliment your new Christmas scheme.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

Tantalising taste at the Brasserie, The Osprey Hotel, Naas Food Review by Rose B O’Donoghue ‘Fine dining’ is a phrase often bandied about but that’s exactly what you’ll when you visit the Brasserie located at the Osprey Hotel, Naas. A bright and bubbly Michaela took us to our table which overlooked the brightly lit water fountain at the front of the hotel. On the opposite side is a cosy, seasonally dressed restaurant ideal for private, club or work functions.

We were presented with the Winter Specials’ Menu, very popular with corporate guests during the week, Michaela advised. Two courses cost €27.50 or three courses for €35. I ordered a lovely glass of Chilensis Cabernet Sauvignon and felt the stresses of the day gradually evaporate.

The Right Start.

For starters, I ordered the Chef’s Signature Dish ‘Study of Fish’ which entailed ‘housecured Seatrough, Seared Scallop and Crab Ravioli’. This was beautifully presented whilst my companion ordered Handmade Torellini of Forest Mushroom with Butternut Squash Velout, Truffle Essence and Parmesan listed as the ingredients. Whilst w e waited for our starters, we sampled a selection of sweet breads

with seeds with butter, sun dried tomato paste and a black olive tournede. Ooh, delicious! My fishy starter was also equally delicious, in fact it was heaven on the palate and the perfect start to my evening meal. My guest was a little disappointed in the Forest Mushroom and felt it lacked a little in flavour but I suspect unless you really like butternut, you’re not going to love this dish!

Chef’s Chocolate Trio

Main Courses

Nine out of ten times, I opt for a fish main course but last week, I decided to try yet another trio of meats on the menu. This time it was the Chef’s Signature Dish ‘Trio of Irish Beef’ which entailed a 5oz medallion of Irish Beef, a braised piece of ‘short rib’ – pulled streak that is, along with Confit Cheek. I asked for my steak to be medium cooked and happy days, that’s what I got! Juicy, succulent steak, still pink and fleshy in the centre – perfectly cooked and served with ‘Heritage Carrots, Watercress, Parnsip and Anise Puree’, plus a selection of potatoes.

Cosy interior of the Brasserie ideal for private functions, work parties, etc

The steak made the night for me; too often, when I say ‘medium’, I am served a dry, dull looking piece of meat which just because it isn’t burnt on the outside, is far too well cooked on the inside. My friend opted for the Baked Fillet of Cod Demi-Sol which is served with a her crust, chorizo, white beans, tomato and citrus hollandaise which she thoroughly enjoyed. The main course options included Seared Loin of Wicklow Venison with mini Game Pie, Roast Garlic Pomme Mousseline, Blackberry Dark Chocolate and Medeira Jus o Roast Breast of Chicken served with Leg and Foie Gras Croquette, Pied du Mouton, pear and Savoy Cabbage or a Vegetarian Dish of the Day. Food was served piping hot and great emphasis placed on presentation.

Another Trio!

Well, I opted for the full throttle again with the Desserts and asked for a ‘small’ portion of the Chocolate Trio. Everyone’s definition of small

Perfectly cooked juicy and succulent steak

or large is relative! But I ate were supreme, a wonderful futhe lot and it was better than sion of Irish ingredients mixed delicious, it was wickedly en- with international seasoning joyable. and flavours. Prior to entering the market, Blackberry Hearing’s market research validated that there was significant consumer dissatisfaction with pricing and after-care service. So, the focus for the company has been on providing quality, affordability, price transparency and simplicity but ultimately ensuring the customer gets the best possible solution for their individual needs. To achieve this the company has instilled an ethos where no stone is left unturned to ensure total customer satisfaction. Employing only BSc qualified audiologists, a rarity in the business, ensures that the customer receives the best possible consultation and thereafter the best possible solution. Price transparency has been a cornerstone of the Blackberry Hearing philosophy. Research again revealed that prices advertised in the industry were rarely available during or after the consultation. To this end, Blackberry Hearing ensures that anyone attending one of their free hearing consultations is aware beforehand of the cost of hearing aids for them, should they want to proceed. This then is backed up by a 45-day cooling off period, where a customer has the assurance they can return the hearing aids for a full refund should they not be fully satisfied.

The ultimate measure of a company’s success in providing customer care must come from the customers themselves. Blackberry Hearing has expanded rapidly and now holds over 60 fortnightly clinics. The feedback from both clinic partners and customers has been overwhelmingly positive. An example of comments from letters sent to the regional press includes: “I can only say that the service was top class. “We did not necessarily set out to be disruptive according to John: “but our low pricing and strong customer care seems to have done just that. Being able to hear again is transformative to people with hearing loss. Research shows that people with hearing loss retreat from social interaction with family, friends, and colleagues with drastic results on their mental wellbeing. Changing peoples’ lives for the better at an affordable price is a really good feeling. While 2016 has been the first full year of trading, Blackberry Hearing has expanded significantly to most of the country and hopes to bring its service to the far reaches of the country by 2017. Meanwhile, you can book a FREE hearing consultation at a clinic near you or find out more by phoning Blackberry Hearing directly at 01-6978470.

Rita Foley, Audiologist As an audiologist, it is my aim to provide the best possible service I can in terms of both the clinical assessment and vitally the care the customer receives. One reason I am delighted to work for Blackberry Hearing is because Blackberry Hearing ticks all the key boxes. With its affordable prices and customer care philosophy, I can offer a very reliable and good customer care service, ensuring that each customer remains very happy with both their hearing aids and their new hearing experience.

Gone are the days where we were forced to wear hideous Christmas jumpers to show our festive cheer, because this year’s holiday jumpers are quirky, cute and above all, stylish. There’s no need to dread the onset of December any longer. There’s such a wide selection of Christmas jumpers, you’re sure to find an interpretation that suits your own sense of style. You’re sure to find a Christmas jumper you love so much, you’ll dread packing it away when the festive season is over. A quick round-up of our favourites includes trendy animal prints, sequins or even a simple knit with a festive slogan. You can even advertise your favourite drink with cosy gin or prosecco-themed sweaters. No-one will ever need to ask what you want in the pub ever again! If you don’t see a jumper that catches your eye in our selection, you can even make your own with this nifty kit from Paperchase. It contains gold bells, pom poms and even snowflakes to make your Christmas jumper dreams come true. STYLICIOUS…

Quick fixes for

DRY HANDS There’s a cold going round the office and the promise of flu is in the air. To stave off infection, we’re all washing our hands more thoroughly. But your frequent hand-washing is giving you dry and cracked hands that are rough to the touch and even worse to look at. Sanitiser and soap quickly rid your hands of any moisture. That, coupled with the harsh weather, means that it’s almost impossible to keep your hands soft and supple. You’re also fighting an impossible battle when it comes to office heating and airconditioning, which leaves skin parched. We all know that prevention is better than a cure, so here are a few tips to keep hands baby-soft and smooth before December really sets in.

Hydration, hydration, hydration

Now is the time to put that light lotion at the very back of the drawer in favour of heavy creams that give your hands what they need. The thicker the lotion the better is what the experts say when choosing a hand lotion. Make sure you pick up your lotion as often as possible by leaving a bottle on your desk at work or in your bag. Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Concentrated Hand Cream is concentrated, and will last for over 200 applications. That’s sure to last you until the end of February at least!

Pink quilted leather gloves, River Island €33 - £25

You’ll add moisture back to your skin without skipping your numerous hand-washing sessions every day.

Add an extra layer

The wind can be very harsh on your skin, so skip that layer by remembering to wear gloves. Add luxury by choosing a pair with a soft, silky lining such as these pink gloves from River Island. If you prefer to wear wool gloves, add a glove liner in a softer fabric. Wool can be very scratchy on your skin and will sometimes exacerbate the problem.

Shea Nourishing Body Butter, The Body Shop €20.95 - £14

Create your own spa

Slather on a generous layer of shea butter or coconut oil while you’re watching TV to give your hands a real treat. You can also use a formula like Vaseline or a soothing bath treatment such as this pick from Aveeno before applying your cream to get the full effect. A full series later, you’ll soon have baby-soft hands that are perfect to hold this winter!

Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Concentrated Hand Cream, Boots €4.12 - £2.89

Aveeno Bath & Shower Oil, Boots €7.99 - £5.79

Tackle your sanitiser

We all love our hand sanitiser, which is understandable – it’s a quick and easy way to clean your hands. While these handy tubes aren’t the best pick for dry skin, there are ways to combat their drying effect, without ditching your chosen formula. Add a drop of tea tree oil to your lotion for a DIY fix that will combat that drying effect without compromising on convenience.

Swap your soap

Dermatologists recommend skipping the soap altogether. Not to worry – you can still wash your hands. Just swap your soap for a cleanser instead. Avoid formulas that have been labelled as antibacterial and use a moisturing cleanser, such as this offering by La Roche-Posay. Better yet, you can even use the same formula to wash your face!

La Roche-Posay Effaclar H Hydrating Cleansing Cream, Feel Unique €8.06 - £6.30 Tea Tree Oil, The Body Shop €11.50 - £8

Christmas Gift Ideas for the Health Conscious By Alan Browne With the Christmas season truly upon us we would like to wish all of our readers a very happy and healthy festive season. Christmas is often associated with over-indulgence and gaining a few pounds and can also be a time of anxiety as we frantically rush around trying to buy gifts. Over the next two weeks we would like to share with you strategies to counter both of these stress inducing events. This week we would like to provide ideas for presents for any health conscious family or friends that you are struggling to buy for and next week we will offer tips on how to have fun over Christmas while staying healthy and avoiding any unnecessary weight gain. If they are like us, your healthy friends probably spend most of their money on; food, gyms or training gear so let’s start with these:

our boxing classes as well as for personal training sessions with any of our fully qualified coaches. Many of our long term clients originally came here as a result of being gifted a voucher to try FIT+ so if you would like to improve someone’s health or allow them to experience what you get from

For people who exercise regularly a trip to a good masseuse is a truly rewarding experience. Gifting someone a calming hour of relaxation could be just what they need and we are sure that they will really appreciate it. In FIT+ we regularly go to Inspire Holistics in the Atrium Naas so highly recommend a voucher for here. Alternatively many people are now able to give themselves massages through the use of foam rollers and other self-massage tools so these can also be fantastic gifts to any regular gym goer.

Books

There is so much to learn and so many interesting sto-

ries in the area of health and fitness so a book could be a very valuable and inspiring gift for someone. All of our coaches in FIT+ are readers so if you want any recommendations just ask us.

Technology

For anyone more technically minded there are many options for presents in this growing department. Activity monitors such as Fit Bits are very popular as are satellite watches and personal cameras such a Go Pro. For the outdoors type these can serve as great gifts.

Active Day Out

Not all gifts have to cost money and often the best ones do not. If you have a friend who loves hiking or cycling then taking them out for the day can be a very meaningful way to spend time together and something they will really value. If you would like to purchase a FIT+ voucher for a loved one please call in to us on Corbans Lane Naas or phone us on 045-888745 to speak to one of our coaches about what we can offer.

KILDARE & WEST WICKLOW SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS DOG OF THE WEEK – SPENCER

The Kildare & West Wicklow Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (KWWSPCA) is a Registered Charity (Number CHY 6280) that investigates and deals with reports of cruelty and neglect to animals of all sorts; family pets, wild animals and birds, farm animals, horses, ponies and donkeys, throughout County Kildare and West Wicklow. It is a voluntary organisation with no paid employees.

Christmas Fair a Great Success!

Santa with KWWSPCA volunteers Emma, Rebecca, Betty and Rebecca No 2!

A very successful weekend was had at the Christma Fair at the KWWSPCA Animal Shelter in Athgarvan, with all the proceeds going to help the animals in the care of the KWWSPA. Many thanks to everyone who supported us and gave so generously. Special thanks to all our Volunteers and especially to Santa who visited for the whole weekend!

Spencer has come into the care of the KWWSPCA from the Kildare Dog Pound. He is a young dog, perhaps just a year old, and we think he is a boxer cross. He is was very underweight when he first arrived, but he loves his food and it will not be long before he is back to his proper weight. He is a friendly dog who seems to get on well with other dogs and he is good on the lead, although quite strong. He has not had much training and he will need to go to a home where there is someone willing to give him the training and attention that he really needs. But Spen-

Spencer

cer is an intelligent dog and it would not take him long to get used to the house rules.

Spencer has been neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. Spencer is at the KWWSPCA Shelter in Athgarvan so if you would like to meet him, the Shelter is open every day, apart from Sundays, from 2 – 4pm or at other times by appointment by calling 087 2517381. We ask for a rehoming fee of €100 when we rehome a dog to partly cover their veterinary and other costs, and a home check is needed. Spencer will be fully vaccinated, neutered and microchipped before going to his new home. For more information about Spencer, please call 087 9133923.

Next Sunday, George and his staff invite you to their ‘Christmas Celebration Remembrance’ at 3pm on Saturday, 11 December. The event will take place at their funeral home on Kilcullen Road, behind Maxol Service Station (formerly James Hughes & Son). “Each family may light a candle and place a star on our Christmas Tree; they can write the name of their loved on the star and collect it at the end of the celebration or indeed, after Christmas” said George. “Please note, the remembrance celebration is open to all, it’s not just for families who’ve used our services – it’s open to the public in general. I have been meaning to do this over the past few years, and now with the help of my staff, I am hosting it this year, and hopefully, we will consider running it every year thereafter. “Anyone who wishes to honour a departed friend or relative, you and welcome to join us on Saturday in Naas for our Christmas Remembrance Cel-

Intel kicks off festive season with annual Senior Citizen’s Christmas Party Over 250 guests from Leixlip joined the Christmas party at the Springfield Hotel on Wenesday 30, an evening where seniors from the local community and a team of Intel volunteers come together to celebrate the festive season. This was the 18th year of the party which is a special occasion both for local residents and for the Intel employees who take part. Guests from across Leixlip attended the event at the Springfield Hotel. Before the meal was served, Father Peter Clancy, Confey Parish Priest, brought everyone together for a short moments silence to say grace. Shortly afterwards, a traditional dinner of turkey and ham was served to guests. This was followed by dessert and once the band began to play, everyone was eager to hit the dancefloor. Bobby Harpur and the rest of the band kept the crowd entertained for the night, playing all time classics such as ‘New York, New York’ and ‘Proud Mary’. Everyone was on their feet, and only retired to their seats for the beginning of the raffle, where five

spot prizes were presented to five lucky guests. Most guests remained on the dancefloor until the night came to a close and as guests left, they were presented with a box of chocolates by the Intel volunteers. In the lead up to Christmas, Intel will support a number of events and activities including a shoebox appeal and Turkey Trot fun run for the local Vincent de Paul organisation and the Meals on Wheels Christmas lunch on December 7 last.

Your Party Treasures Made to Measure at The Zip Yard, Newbridge Party Season

Party Season is upon us. There is a secret to looking your best in your party wear this Christmas. It’s the Zip Yard. Our Store in the Court Yard Shopping Centre Newbridge is passionate about clothes. Our tailors and store manager work one to one with our customers to ensure the perfect fit for your party wear.

Party Season means glitz and glam and nothing is more glam than a vintage garment that nobody else has. From Alex Chung to Katy Perry, celebs love vintage and so do we at the Zip Yard. If you are not so lucky to have inherited a beautiful vintage piece, why not make your own! At The Zip Yard, we remodel and restyle high street clothes to give them a more retro look. By adding embellishment, changing skirt length, restyling sleeves and collars we can make that high street garment a unique bespoke item reminiscent of a bygone era.

Stylefish!

The store mangers are all Stylefish accredited in Body Shape Customer styling and can help customers to determine the best fit and style to suit their body shape. “Make sure your treasures are fit to measure” is our moto at the Zip Yard Newbridge. We love working with all types of garments and customer request but our favourite items are the pre loved and sentimental items customers bring to the Zip Yard. Recently, a young woman asked us to remodel a dress a grandmother had made in the 1950s. Her grandmother recently died and she wanted to wear the dress in memory of her. We were delighted to work on the dress and ensure it fit perfectly for an upcoming wedding.

All fabrics and textures

Fun furs easy to re-create

Many women bring in furs belonging to older relatives and we work with the customer to update the fur and give it a modern fit. Our in-house tailors are specialised in fur and leather and worked with many customers in remodelling and

styling these precious fabrics. Gentlemen catered for too We also work on gentlemen’s wear and have restyled suits and overcoats customers have inherited from their fathers and grandfathers. While keeping the original style of the garments, we ensure a custom fit for the new owner.

No more parking worries as Audi introduces its AI parking systems Audi has demonstrated its expertise in artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous driving at the Conference & Workshop on Neural Information Processing Systems (NIPS) in Barcelona, as a concept model Audi Q2 autonomously completed complex parking manoeuvres. Self-learning systems are a key technology for autonomous, or ‘piloted’, cars. The 1:8 scale model car, the “Audi Q2 deep learning concept”, autonomously searches for and finds suitable parking spaces in the form of a metal frame on a 3x3-metres area and parks itself there. The Audi Q2 deep learning concept’s sensor technology consists of two mono cameras, facing forward and toward the rear, along with ten ultrasonic sensors positioned at points all around the model. A central on-board computer converts their data into control signals for steering and the electric motor.

Parking made easy!

On the driving surface, the model car first determines its position relative to the parking space. As soon as it perceives the position, it calculates how it can safely drive to its targeted destination. The model car manoeuvres, steers and

associated development environment, was an important partner in the development of the zFAS. These technical solutions will enable the customer to enjoy piloted driving in traffic jam situations, as well as piloted parking. Audi is intensifying its collaborations with partners in high-tech industries by integrating more AI components into its vehicles. AI is essential for dealing with challenging situations such as urban traffic, enabling piloted driving

drives forwards or in reverse, depending on the situation. The model car’s parking ability is made possible by ‘deep reinforcement learning’. In other words, the system essentially learns through trial and error. To begin, the car selects its direction of travel at random. An algorithm autonomously identifies the success-

ful actions, thus continually refining the parking strategy; in the end, the system is able to solve even difficult problems autonomously. The Audi Q2 deep learning concept is a pre-development project of Audi Electronics Venture (AEV) in Germany. In the next step, the developers are transferring the parking-

space search process to a real car.

‘Mobileye’

Audi is also working with partners including Mobileye, the world’s leading company in image recognition. In this partnership, the two companies combined their expertise to develop a deep learning-based software for environment per-

ception systems. Audi will use the software for the first time in 2017 in the central driver assistance controller (zFAS) in the new Audi A8.

New Car Registrations to reach circa 147,000 for 2016

Toyota C-HR best selling car in Ireland in November

Official statistics released last week by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) show that new car registrations for the month of November at 748 were down by 192 cars (20%) compared to November 2015 (940) while total new car sales are up 17% (146,175) ahead on the same period last year (124,460).

LCVs up 8%

Alan Nolan Director General SIMI

Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) have seen an increase of 8% (667) when compared to November

2015 (620) and are currently up 19% (28,001) year to date. Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) registrations, are up 33% year to date (2,844) but have declined 9% for the month of November (71) 2016 compared to the same month last year (78). Alan Nolan, Director General, SIMI said: “2016 has seen the highest levels in new vehicle registrations since 2008, even with the challenges of Brexit in mid-year and the slowing down in the last couple of months. Overall

it has been a good year for our Industry and all indications look that registration numbers are on track to deliver in the region of 147,000

this year as predicted. “As the Industry looks forward to next year and the key January sales period the outlook remains strong for another good year in 2017. Jim Power Economist and author of the SIMI/ DoneDeal Quarter 3 Review has commented that while the outlook for the economy is a bit more uncertain in the wake of Brexit, looking ahead to 2017 new car sales should have a similar outturn to 2016.”

Return to form for Apples Jade as McManus records 1-2 Owner JP McManus enjoyed a rewarding Winter Festival weekend at Fairyhouse and scored a 1-2 in the Grade 1 Bar One Racing Drinmore Novice Chase on Sunday. Coney Island, trained by Edward Harty and ridden by Mark Walsh looks a fine prospect and the 8/1 chance saw off the Tony Martin-trained Anibale Fly in the race of the day and now heads to Leopardstown at Christmas. Apple’s Jade, just denied in the Grade 1 fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle eight days previously, came out on the right side of a photo-finish to land the Grade 1 Bar One Racing Hatton’s Grace Hurdle for Gordon Elliott, Bryan Cooper and Gigginstown House Stud. Sent off a 4/1 shot, she inflicted a first Irish defeat on Vroum Vroum Mag in a thrilling duel. It was a welcome return to winning ways for Apples Jade, whose form had dipped since her stunning win at the Punchestown festival in April. “I met three or four people coming in racing today and they were maybe slating me for running her. I’m in a lucky position to be training for the lads (Gigginstown House Stud) and they left it up to me,” said Elliott.

“I weighed her this morning and she was actually heavier than she was going to Newcastle last week so I said we’ll let her take her chance and I’m delighted it worked out. I

was under no pressure but it’s great when it works out. “I had a good chat with (journalist) Ryan McElligott last night and he said ‘if it worked it worked and if it didn’t it

didn’t.’ We took the chance and it’s great. “We were learning a bit about her to be honest. To run in the Fighting Fifth last week and coming back here

this week is a testament to how good a mare she is. “The mares hurdle in Cheltenham will be her Gold Cup. There are a couple of races at the start of February for her.

“She won’t go to Christmas. She’ll have one run before Cheltenham all being well. Saying that she might run next week!” Mullins had earlier landed the Grade 1 Bar One Racing Royal Bond Novice Hurdle with 4/1 chance Airlie Beach who was ridden for owners Supreme Horse Racing Club by Danny Mullins. Landofhopeandglory made it three wins from as many starts over hurdles with success in the Grade 3 juvenile hurdle, the even-money favourite winning for Joseph O’Brien and Barry Geraghty. Geraghty was out of luck when 9/2 favourite Campeador crashed out at the final flight with the Grade A handicap hurdle at his mercy and his exit left the way clear for 16/1 chance Waxies Dargle, another in the colours of JP McManus, to win for Noel Meade and Sean Flanagan. Forever Gold, a very well supported 5/2 favourite, landed the 3m5f handicap chase for Batterstown, County Meath trainer Edward Cawley and Chris Timmons while punters were sent home happy as 8/11 favourite Getabird gave Willie Mullins and his son Patrick a second bumper success in two days.

Hurling for Cancer game pencilled in for next August after successful 2016 event Hurling for Cancer Research 2016, organised by racing legends Jim Bolger and Davy Russell, has raised €138,000 for the Irish Cancer Society’s vital cancer research. This brings the total raised through the celebrity hurling match over five years to €542,000, enabling important Irish research breakthroughs such as a recent discovery made by BREAST-PREDICT, an Irish Cancer Society Collaborative Cancer Research Centre. Jim Bolger said, “It is truly exciting to see the developments being made

through cancer research here in Ireland. The number of people with cancer in Ireland is rising annually and more research is vital to tackle this growing epidemic. Davy and I, and all those involved in Hurling for Cancer Research, are proud to play a part in funding the Irish Cancer Society’s work in this field.” The sixth annual Hurling for Cancer Research match will take place in St Conleth’s Park, Newbridge on August 15th 2017, and will once again see top GAA, horseracing and sporting stars take to the pitch.

The Monasterevin U21 football team who captured the Kildare U21 B Football Championship title on Sunday

Stars to line up for John Durkan Memorial Chase There will be a star-studded line up in store for the John Durkan Memorial Chase at Punchestown this Sunday, with Willie Mullins, Gordon Elliott, Enda Bolger and Henry De Bromhead all putting some of their finest horses forward. Douvan and Djackadam, two of Mullins’ horses, will head the market, though the likes of Outlander, Sub Lieutenant and Kylemore Lough also possible

entrants for the Grade One race. Djackadam won this race 12 months ago and finished as runner up in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, while Douvan lit up Punchestown racecourse back in April as a novice when winning the Ryanair Novice Chase. There is more chance of Djackadam starting here for Mullins, with Douvan likely to

be entered in the Hilly Way Chase at Cork on Sunday instead. Kylemore Lough, a winner of the Ryanair Gold Cup in Fairyhouse back in March, is the only British horse entered in the race. Outlander could be the main contender for Gordon Elliott, while Clarcam and Roi Des Francs have also been named in the 13-strong list of entrants

for the Gigginstown Stud based trainer. “Outlander has a few options but the John Durkan would look a very likely target at the minute. It was disappointing he fell at Clonmel the last day but the main thing is that the horse has been fine ever since. We’ve won the race before with Don Cossack so it would be nice to be going back there with some nice chances,” said

Elliot recently. Henry De Bromhead’s Sub Lieutenant is also a strong contender on Sunday, and the Wexford trainer has had this race marked in the cards for some time now. “The John Durkan is very much the plan for Sub Lieutenant and I’ve been very happy with him since Down Royal. He was third in a Grade 1 over three-miles at the Punches-

town Festival but some of his best form is over two and a half miles so he seems versatile. “The John Durkan is a big step up again from Down Royal but Outlander didn’t look like he was going to do our form any harm so it will be interesting to see how our lad progresses. He’s a really nice horse to have and we’ll just take one race at a time with him,” de Bromhead said.

Kildare GAA stars putting in the hard yards ahead of their ‘Fight Night’ There are only two days to go before the big Kildare GAA fundraiser, and it promises to be a brilliant event as the county’s finest players swap their usual football gloves for boxing ones and go to war in the ring. The effort they have put in throughout their boxing training has impressed manager Cian O’Neill, and he paid tribute to Rachel Reidy, Tara Hallinan and Mary Hulgraine, members of the Kildare ladies side that won the All-Ireland Intermediate title this year and are now taking to the ring. “This has been a great experience for all the players and we in the management are extremely proud of everyone involved, including Rachel, Tara and Mary, who have put in a savage effort over the course of the last 9 weeks. This period of training has taken everyone out of their comfort zone in terms of the type of training that they are all used to, but the benefits are huge for their own game in terms of general fitness of course but equally important their footwork, hand speed, evasion skills and ability to make and take contact. One thing we cannot forget is

Players are pictured following a training at Ryston boxing club recenetly

the hard edge, the physical and mental toughness that you need to survive in the ring – that’s the real bonus of this Fight Night experience. Add to that the craic and banter that forms part of every single

session in Brady’s Gym and Ryston Boxing Club and it really has been a fantastic experience”. O’ Neill signalled extra praise to his youth brigade who have had a busy winter period, “We

have quite a young squad this year and this brings with it the challenge of balancing and monitoring training workload very carefully, particularly with College and Club (U21 and Leinster Club) commit-

ments. But the dedication of this group to their Boxing Training has been outstanding and they are all looking forward to the event. For example, Rachel and Tara are both playing O’ Connor Cup with

their colleges, yet rarely miss a session. Darren Maguire has an exam next Saturday afternoon, yet will rush down from UCD to ensure he is there to fight that night. Con Kavanagh and Conor Hartley only joined the Squad 3 weeks ago after their Leinster Club Campaign ended and they were eager to join the action next Saturday night so I think a huge amount of credit needs to go to this young group of players for their dedication to the squad and also to their club/college demands”. Tickets for the event are €20 and are available to buy from players, management and backroom members of the Senior Football Team, as well as from Co. Board and Club Kildare Official all week. Tickets are also available online at https://www. eventbrite.ie/e/kildare-seniorfootball-team-fight-night-tickets-29730567929. Tickets can be purchased at the door on the night but get there early as doors close at 8pm and entry to the After-Party in the Nightclub is strictly limited to those attending the Fight Night Event.

Naas suffer defeat but secure losing bonus point Old Wesley...............19 Naas........................16 By Mark Herbert Naas concluded their 2016 campaign with an away fixture to Old Wesley last Friday night. A large number of supporters travelled from Naas to Donnybrook and although they were to be disappointed with the result, they witnessed a cracking game of rugby with the outcome in doubt right up to the final whistle. The game was played on a dry, calm night that was perfect for running rugby and that is what both sides endeavoured to play at every opportunity. Old Wesley took the lead after 12 minutes. This came as a result of mistake by Naas, a mistake that was to be repeated to costlier effect later. After passing the ball back into their own 22, Naas kicked directly into touch, handing Old Wesley a line-out close to the Naas line. From the line-out the home side drove at the Naas defence, winning a penalty at the subsequent ruck, which Barry McLaughlin slotted over. After 17 minutes we saw an amazing passage of play from both sides. Naas launched a dangerous attack in the Old Wesley 22, only to see

McLaughlin intercept and race clear. Naas desperately chased back and caught the Wesley player close to the line, but were deemed to have high tackled him. The home side tapped the penalty into the corner, giving them a five yard line-out. However, Paulie Tolofua managed to steal this and he sprinted clear. He was stopped just short of the Wesley 22 yard line, referee Saba Abulashvili deemed the home

side had hands in the ruck and Peter Osborne kicked over the subsequent penalty to level matters. On 24 minutes Naas repeated their mistake of kicking directly into touch after passing the ball back into their 22. This time the home side took full advantage. They won the line-out, quickly transferred the ball to Isaac Leota who dived over the line for the opening try, which McLaughlin converted. Within

four minutes another McLaughlin penalty gave the home side a 13-3 lead, and when Naas were penalised for collapsing a scrum on 34 minutes the same player made it 16-3. Naas were now in big trouble and needed the next score to stay in contention. With a minute left of the half they managed this when Peter Osborne slotted over after Rob O’Connor had been high tackled, making it Old Wesley 16 -

Naas 6 at the break. The opening 15 minutes of the second half belonged to Naas. This period of dominance saw two David Benn tries which levelled the scores and led to a pulsating finish. The first of these came on 46 minutes when after Old Wesley won a scrum deep in their own half Adam Griggs attempted to kick clear. However Benn superbly blocked it down, gathered possession and dived over. On 55 minutes a great break in midfield by Peter Osborne took play deep into the Wesley half. The Naas forwards then took over and after a series of charges at the try-line it was that man Benn again who managed to get over. Although both conversions were missed the scores were now level at 16 each and Naas looked the better side. Credit then must go to Old Wesley as they dominated the last quarter. Indeed only for some great Naas defence the outcome could have been decided much earlier. It is easy to see how Naas have conceded the least amount of points in the league, as no matter what Old Wesley tried the away side had an answer for it. However on the 76th minute, just as a draw was looking likely, Naas were penalised at a ruck and Barry McLaughlin kicked the penalty to give Old Wesley a 19-16 victory, although Naas

did claim a losing bonus point. So the curtain comes down on 2016 for the Naas first XV. It is a year which they will take great pride in. In those 12 months, they played 18 league games, winning 14, gaining promotion from Division 2A and are currently fifth in Division 1B. All in all, a tremendous achievement. The league now takes a break and resumes on Friday, January 27 when the return fixture with Old Wesley takes place in Naas with a 8 o’clock kick-off time.

Dash of Nash and bits of Fitz steer Monasterevin to glory

Adam Kavanagh of Monasterevin skips away from St Laurence’s Tom Glynn Monasterevin captain John O’Toole receives the U21 B Championship trophy

St Laurence’s........ 1-11

U21 B Football Championship semi-final By Patrick Ward It was a fabulous end to the Kildare club season in St Conleth’s Park as Monasterevin landed the U21 B title in thrilling fashion by edging out a committed and brave St Laurence’s side by just two points. The game had everything from hard hits, exceptional scores, agonising misses and late drama, but it was hard to dispute the fact that the blues were deserving victors on the day. A minute’s silence was ob-

served before the ball was thrown in to honour the memory of the late Mick Fogarty, a legend of Kildare GAA who sadly passed away just over a week before the game. Monasterevin’s victory was ultimately down to the brilliance of two players in particular, with Wayne Fitzpatrick and Padraig Nash both turning in superb performances as they accounted for 1-8 of their side’s tally. It took a number of minutes for the game to really swing into life as both sides showed a certain amount of nerves, which is completely normal for games of such magnitude. It was just 0-1 apiece after eight minutes, with the excellent Jason McHugh opening the scoring for St Laurence’s, before Padraig Nash displayed his accuracy with a fine curling effort to open Monasterevin’s account. Jack Lawler, Larries’ best forward on the day, got his

personal tally up and running in the tenth minute with a tidy point from a tight angle that came at the end of a penetrating run. He followed that up with a neatly struck ‘45 to double his side’s advantage. The game really began to fizzle soon after, and the physicality revved up a gear as it became a more engaging spectacle. Monasterevin netted their crucial first goal in the 14th minute as a good run by Maloney ended with Darragh Foley finishing to the net from close range. Lawler responded at the opposite end with another point, levelling matters midway through the half. The score of the game arrived directly after however, as county minor star John O’Toole rampaged up the left wing before playing a pass into Nash. The livewire corner-forward swapped passes with Padraig Stapleton before thundering an unstoppable shot into the

top left corner of Richie Redden’s goal. That put Monasterevin into a four-point lead at that stage, and the concession of a couple of goals in the space of five minutes could have really deflated the Larries’ challenge, but they held strong and remained in the game. Two points arrived in the space of as many minutes via McHugh and Mark Glynn, providing a good tonic to those goals. The superb Wayne Fitzpatrick drew huge applause from the crowd by driving over a fabulous point from a sideline kick, before Nash added another point with a curling effort from the right wing. St Laurence’s finished the half in the ascendancy however, and a score from Lawlor ensured they entered the break just three points down. 2-4 to 0-7 the score at half-time. It was Monasterevin who began brightly upon the restart, with Fitzpatrick leading the charge. He kicked two scores in quick succession to put the south Kildare club in control, the second of which was a brilliant point from 40 metres out from the outside of his left boot. It was at this point that Jason

McHugh began to exert more of an influence on the game, and his excellent 35th minute point helped to ease the tension in the Larries’ ranks. He added another score from a free soon after, but Nash and Fitzpatrick raised white flags at the other end to ensure the game remained finely balanced. A free from Lawlor narrowed the gap to four points, before St Laurence’s finally got the break they needed. Monasterevin goalkeeper Michael Nash had initially done well to save a low shot from Lawlor, put he threw the ball out to the left, leaving referee Kieran Harris no option but to award a penalty. McHugh stepped up to slam home the penalty, cutting the gap to just one point with 15 minutes left to play. Fitzpatrick and McHugh both swapped frees soon after, and the tension was palpable as the game entered the final 10 minutes. McHugh’s free would prove to be the final point until Ryan Bannon sealed the result with a 64th minute score, but that doesn’t tell the full story. McHugh had a chance to level the game as it ticked towards stoppage time, but his 25 metre free hit the upright an landed in the arms of Paul

Kirwan. The St Laurence’s substitute drove a low shot at goal, but John O’Toole played a captain’s role by clearing it off the line. It proved a pivotal moment as Monasterevin went up the field to cap of their win through Bannon’s point, which was the last kick of the game as this talented side from the border town claimed the title. Heartbreak for Celbridge as Carrick Carrickshock......... 3-12 Celbridge.............. 1-16

Leinster IHC final By Patrick Ward They played the game of their lives and they did their parish and their county proud, but that will count for little in the hearts and minds of Celbridge’s warriors after they were left deflated following one of the most heartbreaking defeats they will ever suffer. They led by six points with three minutes of normal time left to play; they led by one point with a minute of stoppage time left to play, but the never say die attitude of the Carrickshock players ensured that the Leinster title returns to Kilkenny once again this year. Celbridge were given a huge boost on Saturday morning

just hours before the game as county football star Fergal Conway had the red card he received against Bray Emmets in the Leinster semi-final overturned, and he took up his familiar position in the engine room for the Kildare champions. He was instrumental in the superb first quarter that Celbridge produced, and they were in dreamland as they led their illustrious opponents by 1-5 to 0-3 after just 14 minutes. The physicality that they brought to proceedings in those early stages was a hallmark of the game and turned out to be the platform on which their challenge was built. That physical domination was evident when Mark Moloney rose to flick a long ball from Gerry Keegan into the net in the third minute, which came on the coattail of the game’s opening point, a free which was converted by Keegan. Moloney followed up that

goal with a fine point from the right sideline to send his side into a five-point lead early on, before Carrickshock eventually settled into the game. When the Kilkenny champions knocked over three points in the space of as many minutes through John Tennyson and Kevin Farrell(2), you felt that they had finally settled into their rhythm and were going to take charge. That wasn’t to be however, and a Fergal Conway point helped to settle down any nerves that Celbridge might have felt at that stage. Their propensity to tackle high up the field and their superiority in the 50/50 duels was pivotal in their next score as Mark Moloney turned the ball over deep inside the Carrickshock half, allowing Sam White to split the posts from close range. A monstrous Fergal Conway point from the middle of the park soon raised a massive roar from the raucous Celbridge following, leaving them

in dreamland as they led by 1-5 to 0-3 midway through the first half. It was tit-for-tat from that point onwards, with Farrell and Brian Donovan both landing points for the visitors, while Gerry Keegan started to come into the game a bit more at this stage, raising two white flags in the space of 60 seconds in response. It was the County Hurler of the Year that scored his side’s final two points of the half as well, though Carrickshock outscored the hosts by 0-4 to 0-2 on the run in to the break as Mark O’Dwyer, John Power, John Butler and Farrell all chipped in with singles. Celbridge maintained a 1-9 to 0-9 lead at the break however, and they faced into a second half with an advantage they would have bitten your hand off for before throw-in. The feature of great Kilkenny county teams over the years is to come out at the start of second halves and blow their opponents away in a shock 10-minute period, but Celbridge defended supremely to restrict Carrickshock to just one score from a free in the 15 minutes after the break. They outscored their visitors by 0-4 to 0-1 in that period, with Keegan landed two frees and a ‘65, while Leo Quinn angled over a fabulous point under pressure from on front of the stand to send Celbridge six points clear as the game entered the final quarter. During that period of Celbridge dominance it was almost the Niall Lanigan show as he kept the Carrickshock attack at bay with two fabulous saves. Richie Power was sprung from the bench in the early stages of the half, and he set up his younger brother John,

but the Kilkenny star was denied superbly by veteran Lanigan who got down low to parry his shot and then cleared before Darragh Brennan could get to the rebound. Lanigan, a former player with the O’Loughlin Gaels club in Kilkenny, denied the same man once again soon after, this time throwing his body on front of a low shot from Power. Celbridge remained under the cosh, but their defence was absolutely immense as they kept Carrickshock scoreless for a 17-minute spell in the middle of the second half before Farrell eventually ended their barren spell with a point from play. That was soon cancelled out by a tidy Leo Quinn point that re-established the six-point cushion for the Kildare champions. Lanigan’s net was eventually breached in the 57th minute when five-time All-Ireland winner John Dalton broke through the Celbridge defence and pierced a low shot into the net, which was immediately followed by another Farrell point that reduced the gap to two. Celbridge looked to steady the ship as Keegan slotted over a free with two minutes left on the clock, but there were more twists and turns in this epic game yet to come. It was Farrell -Carrickshock’s best player on the day- that stepped up to provide the vital goal in the 61st minute to level matters, seemingly sending the game to a replay. It looked destined to be Celbridge’s day however when Keegan lofted over an unbelievable 62nd minute point from the left wing to put them back into the lead, but the Kildare men were left heartbroken as a long puc out from

Celbridge goalkeeper Niall Lanigan prevents Michael Rohan from scoring a certain goal

Jamie Power landed to the feet of Michael Rohan who shattered Celbridge dreams by finding the net. A more than valiant effort from Celbridge, and on another day it would have been enough, but Carrickshock’s composure in the face of such a firm challenge to their pedigree proved the winning of the game. Celbridge will be back next year no doubt, but they have proved their class with such a fabulous display that really puts Kildare hurling on

the map.
