Good Things to Know West Suburban Special Recreation Association

WSSRA provides outstanding opportunities through recreation for individuals with disabilities. In certain circumstances, additional support staff called "Inclusion Partners" are recruited and trained to assist an individual with a disability within the Park District setting. All participants must be able to meet the essential eligibility requirements of the particular program or camp, with or without reasonable accommodation. Eligibility requirements can be found in program guides, registration materials, codes of conduct, on the website, and through various other means of communication. You are encouraged to call the Park District with any questions on essential eligibility criteria. Families registering participants with disabilities and special needs should make sure to timely identify any special needs or request for reasonable accommodation on the registration form. WSSRA requires a 2-week minimum notice for requests to facilitate successful inclusion. Brochures with more information can be picked up at The Depot, 401 Thatcher Avenue. If you have any questions regarding the inclusion process, please feel free to contact WSSRA's Inclusion Coordinator at 847-455-2100.

Camp Refund Policy

1) Refund requests for camps must be received one week before the camp meets to be eligible for a refund. 2) A $10 cancellation fee will be applied to any refunded amount per child/per camp. 3) No refunds will be given if a participant is removed due to the violation of the Park District’s 4-Point Discipline Policy or due to disciplinary issues.

Code of Conduct: 4-Point Discipline Policy

It is our intention to provide your child with a safe and secure environment. We attempt to create a warm, comfortable, and fun atmosphere that will make your child look forward to coming to camp each day. In order to ensure the quality of this program and safety of the campers, each participant must follow program rules.

4-Point Discipline Policy

Campers are encouraged to practice those social skills that will allow them to resolve conflicts and meet their needs without the use of harmful or destructive behaviors. When disciplinary situations occur that require intervention, an adult provides the child with clear explanations as to why specific behavior is inappropriate. They then help him/her find alternative behavior that fits within the camp guidelines of appropriate behavior. These guidelines revolve around concerns for the safety of all participants in camp. If the camp staff encounters behavior problems with any participant, he/she will first attempt to resolve the problem with the camper. If this fails, the Camp Supervisor will be consulted, followed by the parents. There is a strict 4-Point Discipline Policy. If a camper gets 2 Written Warnings during the summer, he/she will be dismissed from the program. Every parent/ guardian is required to read the following information to his/her camper and sign and return the 4-Point Discipline Policy Form to camp. (This must be on file prior to the start of camp.)

NUT-FREE ZONE

All camp sites have been designated NUT-FREE. We are requesting your cooperation in partnering with us to ensure a safe environment for children with nut allergies. Parents with children that have a nut allergy are requested to notify the Park District as soon as possible by completing an Allergy Action Plan Form. OTHER ALLERGIES If your child has any other known allergies, you must complete an Allergy Action Plan Form to keep on file.

Camp Staff and Training A qualified adult Camp Director supervises each camp. Counselors at each camp are mature and enthusiastic college-age students. All camp staff complete an extensive training program that includes supervision and safety techniques, activity development, and first aid. Camp Directors are also certified in CPR, First Aid, and AED.

Beginning Golf Camp

Ages: 5 - 10 Skyhawks Golf focuses on building the confidence of young athletes by teaching proper technique to refine essential skills of the game. SNAG utilizes a set of equipment designed for beginning golfers, including oversized plastic club heads and “mini tennis balls to help build confidence and to have fun. Developed by PGA professionals, SNAG is specifically designed for the entry-level player; SNAG simplifies instruction so that young players can make an easy and effective transition onto the golf course. River Forest Recreation Center Collaboration (RFRCC)

The River Forest Park District continues a discussion with the other River Forest taxing bodies, the River Forest Community Center, and Opportunity Knocks to explore the possibility of collaboratively building a new recreation facility in River Forest. The group has drafted and published a Request for Qualifications for feasibility and architect services and will be interviewing candidates and submitting a recommendation to the Village Board. Information on the discussions is posted on the River Forest Park District website at www.rfparks.com.

Synthetic Turf Discussions

River Forest Park District Board of Commissioners has spent the last six months doing its due diligence to research, solicit public feedback, and hold open discussions on the merits of the installation of synthetic turf for the Keystone Park girls’ softball and boys’ baseball infields. To address public questions/comments and provide updates on the discussions, an FAQ was posted in March 2019. The Board is expected to take action on the synthetic turf proposal by their April 2019 Board Meeting. The River Forest Youth Baseball and Softball Association have offered a $50,000 donation toward installing synthetic turf on the softball infield. For more information regarding this synthetic turf project and future Public Hearing dates, please go to www.rfparks.com.

Community Vegetable Gardens

This will be the second year residents will have an opportunity to rent 10’ x 4’ garden plots at the Village Pump House site at Jackson Avenue and Berkshire Street. This program is being offered through collaboration between the Park District, the Village of River Forest, and the Village Sustainability Commission. The registration deadline to reserve a garden plot is Monday, May 13th. Information on the garden plots and registration forms are available on the River Forest Park District website at www.rfparks.com.

Staff Member Changes

We are fortunate to have two individuals with extensive experience overseeing our finance department.
