Community News - Park District Park District Happenings Welcome New Board Members

We welcome Cheryl Cargie and Lynn Libera to the Park District Board of Commissioners. Both were elected to 6-year terms in the April 7th Consolidated Election. Congratulations to our new Park Board Members, and thank you for your service to our community.

Community Survey and Strategic Plan

Thank you to the many residents who participated in our Community Survey this past spring. Your support of the Park District and our Community Survey process is invaluable. We received over 460 responses, giving the survey a statistical validity of +/-4.4%. The Board will be spending several months developing a new five-year Strategic Plan, which will include new programs, new amenities, and a review of our indoor space needs. The results of the Community Survey are available on the River Forest Park District website at www.rfparks.com.

The Depot Interior Improvements

In June, the Board hired FGM Architects to develop schematic drawings and estimated construction costs for the renovation of the interior of The Depot. Work would include a larger, more versatile, handicap accessible program room and organizing our administration offices into a single, secure space. If the project moves forward, work would take place during the winter months.

Community Recreation Center Collaboration

District 200, the Park District of Oak Park, and the River Forest Park District have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to set forth the terms and understanding on the collaboratively funded construction of a Community Recreation Center to provide recreational and wellness opportunities for the residents of Oak Park and River Forest. Board Representatives and agency Administrators will be meeting throughout the next six months to determine the feasibility of this project, review possible site locations and associated costs, and determine if this facility fits the needs of our community as outlined by our Community Survey. Information on the discussions will be posted on the River Forest Park District website at www.rfparks.com.

Welcome Parks Foundation Members

This spring, our Parks Foundation went through some significant changes, including the Sustainability Committee becoming the Sustainability Commission under the Village. This change resulted in the loss of some Parks Foundation Members, but the Park Board of Commissioners has filled most of those positions with the appointments of Susan Charrette, Calvin Davis, and Ann Hanson to the Parks Foundation Board. Congratulations to our new Parks Foundation Board Members, and thank you for your service to the community.

New Platform Tennis Courts

In September, the Park District will be opening two new platform tennis courts next to our existing two courts in Keystone Park. The new courts will provide the additional space to meet the increasing program needs of the platform tennis facility. Annual memberships are now available on the River Forest Park District website at www.rfparks.com. For more information on Board activities, the Parks Foundation, the status of the indoor program space needs discussion, and the status of the Park District’s capital projects, please visit the Park District’s website at www.rfparks.com.

Lightning Prediction System The lightning detection system is located at Keystone, Constitution, Centennial, and Priory Parks. It will be operational from April through November, 8:00 am-10:00 pm daily.

When conditions indicate that a lightning occurrence is probable, a signal is sent to the horns located in the parks providing an 8-15 minute warning to clear the area and seek safe shelter. The warning system will be tested the first Tuesday of each operating month at 10:35 am, immediately following the test of the Village Civil Defense Warning Siren.

Memorial Trees & Bricks Donation Programs

The River Forest Park District is proud to offer two different memorial donation programs. Both programs are a perfect way to honor or share the memory of a loved one, or to commemorate a special event such as a wedding, an anniversary, or the birth of a child.

Memorial Tree Donation Program

For a one-time donation of $400, a tree will be planted at a park of your choosing, depending on availability. Our staff will meet with you to assist in selecting a location for your tree. Our staff will also assist you in choosing the tree if desired. Trees can be purchased throughout the year. However, planting will only take place in the spring and fall. Your donation will be immortalized on a beautifully engraved bronze plaque that will be mounted at the base of the tree. You may select a standard inscription or create a unique message, using an allotted number of characters. You will receive a certificate of acknowledgement for your tree purchase.

Memorial Brick Donation Program (Priory Park and Washington Commons) No matter which park you choose, these embossed bricks will be seen by all those who use the park. There is a 13 character per line maximum with three to six lines available, depending on the size of the paver brick. Paver brick orders are placed twice a year and installed once in the spring and once in the fall. You will receive a certificate of acknowledgement for your paver brick purchase. Paver bricks are available in three sizes: Priory Park - 4”x8” for $75 Priory Park - 8”x8” for $150 Washington Commons - 7”x9” for $100 For more information, please visit our website rfparks.com to download forms, or pick up a Memorial Tree Donation or Memorial Brick Donation order form at The Depot, 401 Thatcher Avenue, River Forest, IL.
