Memorial Trees & Bricks Donation Programs

The River Forest Park District is proud to offer two different memorial donation programs. Both programs are a perfect way to honor or share the memory of a loved one, or to commemorate a special event such as a wedding, an anniversary, or the birth of a child.

Memorial Tree Donation Program

For a one-time donation of $400, a tree will be planted at a park of your choosing, depending on availability. Our staff will meet with you to assist in selecting a location for your tree. Our staff will also assist you in choosing the tree if desired. Trees can be purchased throughout the year. However, planting will only take place in the spring and fall. Your donation will be immortalized on a beautifully engraved bronze plaque that will be mounted at the base of the tree. You many select a standard inscription or create a unique message, using an allotted number of characters. You will receive a certificate of acknowledgement for your tree purchase.

Memorial Brick Donation Program

(Priory Park and Washington Commons) No matter which park you choose, these embossed bricks will be seen by all those who use the park. There is a 13 character per line maximum with three to six lines available, depending on the size of the paver brick. Paver brick orders are placed twice a year and installed once in the spring and once in the fall. You will receive a certificate of acknowledgement for your paver brick purchase. Paver bricks are available in three sizes: Priory Park - 4”x8” for $75 Priory Park - 8”x8” for $150 Washington Commons - 7”x9” for $100 For more information, please visit our website at www.rfparks.com/about/donations/ or pick up a Memorial Tree Donation or Memorial Brick Donation order form at The Depot, 401 Thatcher Avenue, River Forest, IL. Good Things to Know West Suburban Special Recreation Association

WSSRA provides outstanding opportunities through recreation for individuals with disabilities. In certain circumstances, additional support staff called "Inclusion Partners" are recruited and trained to assist an individual with a disability within the Park District setting. All participants must be able to meet the essential eligibility requirements of the particular program or camp, with or without reasonable accommodation. Eligibility requirements can be found in program guides, registration materials, codes of conduct, on the website, and through various other means of communication. You are encouraged to call the Park District with any questions on essential eligibility criteria. Families registering participants with disabilities and special needs should make sure to timely identify any special needs or request for reasonable accommodation on the registration form. WSSRA requires a 2-week minimum notice for requests to facilitate successful inclusion. Brochures with more information can be picked up at The Depot, 401 Thatcher Avenue. If you have any questions regarding the inclusion process, please feel free to contact WSSRA's Inclusion Coordinator at 847-455-2100.

Camp Refund Policy

1) Refund requests for camps must be received one week before the camp meets to be eligible for a refund. 2) A $10 cancellation fee will be applied to any refunded amount per child/per camp. 3) No refunds will be given if a participant is removed due to the violation of the Park District’s 4-Point Discipline Policy or due to disciplinary issues.

Code of Conduct: 4-Point Discipline Policy

It is our intention to provide your child with a safe and secure environment. We attempt to create a warm, comfortable, and fun atmosphere that will make your child look forward to coming to camp each day. In order to ensure the quality of this program and safety of the campers, each participant must follow program rules.

4-Point Discipline Policy

Campers are encouraged to practice those social skills that will allow them to resolve conflicts and meet their needs without the use of harmful or destructive behaviors. When disciplinary situations occur that require intervention, an adult provides the child with clear explanations as to why specific behavior is inappropriate. They then help him/her find alternative behavior that fits within the camp guidelines of appropriate behavior. These guidelines revolve around concerns for the safety of all participants in camp. If the camp staff encounters behavior problems with any participant, he/she will first attempt to resolve the problem with the camper. If this fails, the Camp Supervisor will be consulted, followed by the parents. There is a strict 4-Point Discipline Policy. If a camper gets 2 Written Warnings during the summer, he/she will be dismissed from the program. Every parent/ guardian is required to read the following information to his/her camper and sign and return the 4-Point Discipline Policy Form to camp. (This must be on file prior to the start of camp.)

NUT-FREE ZONE

All camp sites have been designated NUT-FREE. We are requesting your cooperation in partnering with us to ensure a safe environment for children with nut allergies. Parents with children that have a nut allergy are requested to notify the Park District as soon as possible by completing an Allergy Action Plan Form. OTHER ALLERGIES If your child has any other known allergies, please fill out an Allergy Action Plan Form to keep on file.

Camp Staff and Training

A qualified adult Camp Director supervises each camp. Counselors at each camp are mature and enthusiastic college-age students. All camp staff complete an extensive training program that includes supervision and safety techniques, activity development, and first aid. Camp Directors are also certified in CPR, First Aid, and AED.

While engaging the players at all times, we will cover simple foot skills, dribbling, passing, shooting, basic rules, and even work on spreading the field. This class will be a great base to prepare players for the next level of play. All of our programs will focus on teamwork and sportsmanship. Min 6/Max 14

Community News - Park District Park District Happenings Summer Camp Programs

Our summer camp program offerings are larger than ever this summer, with weekly morning Tot, Kidz, Ultimate Sports Camps; 35 weekly specialty afternoon camps; and Thrill Zone for young teens. Park District has purchased a new 15-passenger van for Thrill Zone to provide comfortable transportation to all their activities and enhance the experience. Thrill Zone fills up quickly, so we encourage you to sign up early. Our summer camp registration is now open. Go to the Park District website at www.rfparks.com to register.

Volunteers Needed: Parks Foundation Members

The River Forest Parks Foundation has been serving a dual role as a Foundation and the Village Sustainability Committee. The group has achieved amazing results, bringing to the Village the Green Block Party and the Village compost program, among others. This past February, the Village acknowledged their accomplishments by moving this Committee back under the Village as a Sustainability Commission. This change is great for the community, however, has created a void in the Parks Foundation. The Parks Foundation is looking for new members to fill the void. For more information on what the Parks Foundation is all about and how to volunteer, please go to the Park District website at www.rfparks.com.

Community Survey and Strategic Plan

Many of you received our Community Survey in the mail or by email in early March. This Survey will be asking for input on our parks, facilities, recreation programs, and special events, and what our needs will be in the future. If you were fortunate enough to have received the Survey and completed it, the Park Board thanks you for your participation and support. The data will be tabulated in April, and the new Park Board will use this information to draft a new 3-year Strategic Plan starting in May. If you did not receive a Survey, the document is available to complete on the Park District website at www.rfparks.com.

Two New Platform Tennis Courts

This past winter, a number of platform tennis members requested the Park District Board to reconsider the orientation of the 2 new platform tennis courts to allow the ideal placement of a future paddle hut. The Board reviewed the request, solicited additional public feedback, and spent considerable time researching the impact on the community. The Board ultimately reaffirmed their previously approved decision to construct 2 additional platform tennis courts in the north-south orientation. Funding for the new courts will be largely through the platform tennis membership fees. Construction of the new platform tennis courts is scheduled to begin in May, 2017, with the new courts open for use in July, 2017.

Out-Going Commissioners

Two of our Board Members will be stepping down in May, and two new Board Members will be sworn in. Park Commissioners Paul Koester and Beth Dunne will be leaving after 6 years of dedicated service. We thank them for volunteering their time and expertise to our community and helping take the Park District to the next level. For more information on the Community Survey, the Parks Foundation, the Board’s indoor program space discussion, and the platform tennis courts, please go to the Park District website at www.rfparks.com.

Parks Foundation River Forest Healthy Lawn, Healthy Family The River Forest Parks Foundation is asking you to take the Healthy Lawn, Healthy Family Pledge to eliminate synthetic chemical use on your lawns and gardens and embrace natural lawn care practices. Gardening and lawn care chemicals can be harmful to humans, pets, wildlife and waterways. The good news is there are many surprisingly easy ways to care for your lawn and garden that avoid putting your family and neighbors at risk, like watering correctly, mowing high, soil testing your lawns needs, and using naturally derived products. Families that take the pledge will receive a “Keep ON The Grass ” sign to place in their front yard.

Now Accepting Applications for Parks Foundation Board Members The River Forest Park District is accepting applications from residents or business leaders to serve on our seven-member Parks Foundation Board.
