CHANGE IS GOOD.

It keeps things interesting and fresh. I am both horrified and impressed whenever I meet someone who has known what they wanted to be when they grow up since they were a small child (or a first-year university student). This is not to say that I think that they are missing out on important life experiences, but a little lack of direction does a body good as far as self-discovery is concerned. adrienne wollman Of course, this is coming from the girl who is a senior from The University changed her major five times in five semesters (check of North Carolina at Chapel out By the Book on page 26 for one of those reasons) Hilll. She can be reached via email at awollman@email.unc.edu before finally figuring out what she wanted to do, so I may not exactly be the best person to be making a statement on lack of direction...But the point is that learning from mistakes gets the point across. Try something, go after it like you mean it and if you decide you hate it, don’t be afraid to reverse directions. At this point, I know at least five things that I absolutely do not want to be when I grow up and that is at least a start (towards what I’m not exactly sure—ask me again on May 8th).

So with this logic in mind, I encourage you all to partake in a bit of misdirection.

Change things up. Try something new. You’ll never have a better opportunity to hone those underwater hockey skills, take that introductory Russian class just for the hell of it or try out for that a cappella group than while you are an undergraduate student at Duke University or the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. You might love it, you might hate it, but you’ll learn something about yourself that you wouldn’t have otherwise. And as much as an undergraduate education is about learning skills for future success, it is also about learning about yourself. That’s right—it’s okay to be a little self-centered every now and then.

In the spirit of change, we’ve had a bit of a makeover since the summer so please mind the fresh ink on our layout. Our blog has also been updated, so if you absolutely cannot wait to hear from us before our next issue, we recommend heading on over to http://rivalmagazine.wordpress.com to hear what our bloggers have to say. In this issue, we have added a new feature column on page 24 written by one of our writers who is currently studying abroad in Costa Rica in an effort to get a perspective from outside of our respective bubbles at Duke and UNC-CH. Speaking of bubbles, learn about the Bull City Connector bus on page 4 if you want to escape to Durham for a few hours. Or, if you are a senior like me who doesn’t really know what to do after graduation, get some perspectives on living in the “real world” from some recent grads on page 20.

Bursting The Bubble

I

n November 2009, a coveted Chapel Hill gem reopened on Franklin Street: the Varsity Theatre. Paul and Susan Shareshian took over ownership of the theater and students and residents in the area have been escaping to enjoy the classic cinema experience ever since.

With ticket prices at a surprisingly inexpensive $3 per seat and a location right next to campus, how could anyone pass up this experience?

Under the new ownership, the historic site, which has been used as a movie theater for over fifty years, was completely revamped to reflect the charm of a traditional theater. Freshly painted wood panels, maroon carpeting and an upgraded concession stand all convey the old-fashioned experience that the Varsity owners wanted to create.

The vintage look complements the types of movies shown at the Varsity. Instead of playing only Hollywood releases, the Varsity owners are more interested in playing great classic movies and cult films. The theater does also feature films that have been recently released, and they are shown to the public a few weeks after the original release.

Alterations to the movie-viewing experience have also been made. Functionality was added to the film projection: the Varsity no longer depends on 35mm print reels to show movies. With a Blue Ray DVD system and HD programming, the theater can be rented out to groups who want to host special events, birthdays or business gatherings. The versatility of the Varsity has come a long way under the watchful eyes of the Shareshians.

For A Now Playing list and show times, go to varsityonfranklin.com be changed so the chances that one of your favorite classics will be shown is high. Throughout the fall, the Varsity will showcase Roman Polanski films as part of the UNC-CH UniVarsity Film Series.

Rosemary’s Baby and The Pianist will run through October and November. Other unique events that the Varsity holds are the Sunday night football viewings and the Top of the Hill Dinner & A Movie for Two special. The latter includes two tickets to an earlier show at the Varsity, two entrees from the special dinner menu and two beverages. In the past, the Varsity has also shown advanced screenings for films such as the Saturday Night Live hit, MacGruber and the Animal Collective film ODDSAC. Another distinctive feature of the Varsity is the variety of snacks and drinks offered at the concession stand. “Most people are really surprised to see that we offer beer and wine,” said the self proclaimed “concessionista” and projectionist, Jessica Phipps.

The UNC-CH graduate student from Youngsville, NC also said, “The butter for the popcorn is real! It’s not fake like the kind at most theater chains.”

Paul Shareshian has been really happy with the diverse turnout at the movie showings. Shareshian enjoys seeing young and old folks gather together for the same film. He said, “It’s nice to see that what we’re doing is resonating and that we’re building the right momentum.”

he Princeton Review’s website lists Duke University as having the sixth worst ‘town-gown’ relationship in the nation (‘towngown’ referring to a surrounding nonacademic community and the academic institution it hosts). Hopefully this status will be challenged by the new Bull City Connector (BCC), a brightly-colored bus line that connects Duke’s West and Central campuses to downtown Durham.

The BCC’s average ridership has recently reached 1,100 people daily and continues to grow, according to Mark Ahrendsen, Director of City of Durham Department of Transportation. The bus service is operated and maintained by the Durham Area Transit Authority (DATA) and City of Durham with financial contributions from Duke.

The buses connecting Duke to downtown Durham have created buzz among students.However, as Phail Wynn, Vice President for Durham and Regional Affairs of Duke University, told The Chronicle in

September, students have yet to represent a significant portion of the ridership.

“I see very few students riding the bus,” said Duke sophomore Joshua Foromera.

Foromera, a biology major from Zimbabwe, takes the bus three times a week from his Central Campus apartment to West Campus or downtown Durham.

Despite lack of significant student enthusiasm for the BCC so far, Duke is working to talk up the new route. “Everywhere I go, I talk about the Bull City Connector…we use our every effort to remind people about BCC,” said Sam Miglarese, Director of Community Engagement at Duke. Miglarese has worked with several student organizations to promote the BCC because the bus provides students access to downtown churches, Urban Ministries and other service opportunities. Miglarese remains optimistic and said that “as we promote [BCC] and people experience [BCC] by themselves, more people will take the bus.”

This new bus opportunity helps students explore Durham beyond Duke’s stone walls—walls notorious for creating a bubble-like campus culture. Many students believe they ‘experience’ Durham by eating at nearby Mount Fuji or by going to Shooters, the infamous (and rather dingy) bar near East Campus. Today, however, the BCC offers Duke students a chance to get in touch with Durham beyond Brightleaf Square. The Durham Bulls Athletic The Bull City Connector stop at Duke Clinic on Trent Drive. Directly off Flowers Drive just beyond the Sarah P. Duke Gardens, this stop is easily accessible Park, American Tobacco Campus, Durham to students from West Campus.

First-years can easily hop on the Bull City Connector at the intersection of West Main Street and Campus Drive. The stop is immediately beyond East Campus’s stone wall and trail.

Performing Arts Center (DPAC) and the Durham Farmer’s Market are all within walking distance from BCC bus stops.

BCC buses, which come every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 20 minutes on Saturdays, make these destinations significantly more accessible to students, especially students without cars.

It’s finally time to burst through the Duke bubble, and Duke University’s major support for the Bull City Connector proves that the administration is serious about engaging its students beyond private grounds. Duke makes the top lists for everything from libraries to basketball, but hopefully the BCC will help make sure we stray far from a higher ranking when it comes to poor community relations.

Artichoke Basil

With a limited selection of cheese, pepperoni or artichoke pizza on the late night menu, the best choice is apparent: the cheesy, mouth-watering artichoke pizza is a dense purée of artichokes and basil blended with heavy cream on a warm crust. Sprinkle some crisp broccoli on the rich white sauce for a fresh twist.

Cosmic Cantina

This inviting Mexican restaurant is always packed with excited people looking for a satisfying late-night snack. The quesadillas, light nachos and plump burritos are all tasty but not too heavy.

Q’doba

The most popular dish on the menu, the queso burrito, is creamy, warm and flavorful. The full-bodied queso sauce is a successful three-cheese blend with roasted poblano peppers, tomatoes and jalapeño peppers that compliments any burrito or nachos.

This popular Franklin Street restaurant is known for its chicken and cheddar biscuit sandwich, available 24 hours a day. The melted cheese and crispy chicken become one with the buttery biscuit to bring you a greasy, yet welcoming taste that will leave you wanting more.

The Loop

The Loop, centrally located off the Bryan Center Plaza, is a Jack of all trades when it comes to late-night cuisine. “We have it all,” says Elba Hernandez, the Loop’s assistant manager, as she organizes trays of cookies while sprinkling seasoning on batches of fries. In fact, sugar cravings are a kind of specialty at The Loop; the line for milkshakes can get pretty crazy at midnight.

Devil’s Bistro

Al Nelson, cashier at Duke’s new Devil’s Bistro, gave a brief overview of what makes the place so popular: its Central Campus location, ability to text orders, TVs, rocking chairs, catering for parties, and a “quasi Lower-Manhattan look.” Come by around midnight and you can get Nelson, a Brooklyn, NY native, to explain what such a “look” means.

Duke Coffeehouse

One of the few places open past 10 p.m. on East Campus, the Duke Coffeehouse offers an alternative scene where you can indulge yourself in smoothies, take in the colorful murals that decorate its walls, or enjoy CD release parties and shows featuring bands like Andrew Jackson Jihad and Titus Andronicus.

Panda Express

It is not uncommon to see students in Panda Express for some late-night fried rice and egg rolls, getting their fill at the only Asian restaurant on West Campus (excluding Great Hall stalls.) Panda Express often provides free samples, so there’s no guesswork involved in your order. And let’s not forget the fortune cookies!

Daunting crime statistics and sprawling campuses present safety concerns for students at UNC-CH and Duke, but the universities are easing fears by implementing new safety measures and providing resources to help students feel safe.

ollege is supposed to be a time of growth and development: it’s where you create relationships, where you’re comfortable and where you feel safe. Though all crime cannot be avoided, both Duke University and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have programs, operations and security all dedicated to increasing campus safety and student comfort.

Despite using similar security measures, Duke University and UNC-CH are very different campus environments.

“I’d describe Duke as the traditional college campus, and UNC the traditional college town,” says Lina Colucci, a Robertson scholar and mechanical engineer from Lexington, Mass.

Even though UNC-CH is divided into North and South campuses, it opens into the Chapel Hill community, whereas Duke is relatively isolated from Durham and segmented into West, Central and East campuses.

“It’s just a function of the size,” says Colucci, “my lifestyle was just different when I lived at UNC. At Duke, I’d feel a little uneasy at night walking back to my room, but I did it. At UNC I would just work in my dormitory.”

Duke’s enclosed campus, although slightly unsettling at night, allowed Colucci to feel safe enough to finish her homework in places other than her dorm. UNC-CH’s larger, more open campus, however, encouraged her to stay in at night.

Duke and UNC-CH are more than aware of their various differences, but both are hoping to fight daunting statistics.

The Duke University Women’s Center estimates that one in four women on any campus will suffer some sort of sexual assault during her four years of college. That is perhaps the most shocking statistic of anything, but sexual assault is not the only crime occurring at the schools: in 2008, Duke University had four reports of aggravated assault, one count of robbery and 50 reported cases of burglary. UNC-CH had three reported robberies, six aggravated assaults and eight counts of burglary.

While these numbers may seem disheartening, they are simply a statistic to most students at Duke and UNC-CH who feel safe on their campuses. The dangers of campus life do not cross most students’ minds during the day, although there can be some lingering concerns after dark.

To minimize their own fears, most stu-

dents are cognizant of where they should and should not go at night.

UNC-CH junior Michael Crosa describes how “most of the students know where to avoid. The Arboretum is avoided after dark, mainly because it’s poorly lit and you don’t really have a reason to go

there anyway,” said Crosa, a psychology and music double major from Asheville, NC. “But,” he adds, “there’s also an urban legend of someone getting murdered there like 20 years ago.”

dusk. Like UNC-CH’s arboretum, the Gardens are circumvented due to poor-to-nonexistent lighting as well as its remoteness.

With any campus, some places are safer than others, but at Duke, there can be a noticeable difference between the feel of West and Central campuses. Allison Umpress, a junior at Duke, has lived on all three of Duke’s campuses. “My sophomore year I lived in Kilgo (a dormitory off of the main quad) and I absolutely felt the safest there. If I had to walk around at night, I was near everything, it was well lit, and I’d see security guards and other people. I was never worried,” said Umpress, a biology major from Memphis, TN. Umpress now lives in a more isolated part of Central campus, which is apartment-style living.

“Now when I go out,” she says, “I have

to think about if I can find someone to walk me home from the bus stop. I don’t feel comfortable walking by myself.”

Umpress’s concerns are common for students; they cite lighting, proximity, and the number of people in the area as the most important safety concerns. Umpress’ situation is not typical of all Central Campus residences, but it does illustrate the relevance of housing location. “If I lived on Anderson or Alexander Street, it’d be different,” Umpress says, “because I’d be right by the bus stop, but now it’s an unlit, long walk to my apartment.”

Aware of their students’ safety concerns, Duke and UNC-CH utilize different programs and safety precautions aimed at prevention, information and response in order to increase campus safety. While these programs are all derived with the

Under the federal Clery act, Duke and UNC-CH alert students and employees in a timely manner of crimes that pose a serious or continuing threat to their community.

Depending on the nature and location of the incident, an email or campus wide alert is sent. Duke also offers DukeAlert text messages to subscribers for immediate contact.

Transportation:

Both schools offer a free shuttle service for times when a student feels unsafe walking alone at night. Duke’s van service, formally known as SafeRides, takes students in between any of the campuses and will take them off campus within a certain range, but will not return them back to campus.

UNC-CH has a similar program, called Point-to-Point (P2P) express. P2P buses offer fixed-route service 7 p.m. through 3 a.m., seven nights a week. After dark, the P2P shuttle vans will transport passengers needing to travel to or from areas that are not served by the Express buses.

Police Presence:

Duke and UNC-CH are both well-equipped with police departments. The UNC-CH Police Department currently employs 51 full-time armed police officers. Campus is patrolled 24-hours a day, 365 days a year. The Duke University Police Department also provides 24-hour law enforcement and security services to Duke’s academic campuses, as well as off-campus areas.

Information/Preventative:

Duke’s Crime Prevention Unit conducts safety presentation and workshops for students, staff and faculty.

UNC-CH offers a PE credit (PHYA 228) where students learn physical self-defense techniques such as kicking, blocking and escaping from someone’s hold. More importantly, the class focuses on analysis—learning to recognize and avoid vulnerabilities.

UNC-CH also offers Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) training for female students.

RAD teaches awareness, prevention, risk-reduction and avoidance techniques, but much of the 12-hour program is spent practicing application of self-defense tactics,

including realistic simulation training.

students best interests in mind and most programs are very successful, students may not find every feature as useful as the administration would like to believe.

Student Experience

Any campus tour will take you past standard Help Phones (known around campuses as ‘blue lights’ or else clearly visible at Duke as large yellow posts reading “HELP”), but students doubt their practicality. “The Help Phones are fine for general deterrence, but there’s not one where I need one or where I live,” said Umpress.

While the phones are a great concept, they are only as practical as their prevalence. Duke sophomore Dan Fishman, a philosophy major from Westport, CT,

echoes this concern. “If I have to think about where they are, it’s not going to be helpful,” Westport said. “I think they’d be used more by a bystander then someone actually being attacked.”

Phones may come in handy during some emergencies, but a more frequent safety concern is the ability to travel around campus easily at night. Students need to get around campus after the buses stop running, and they can always take Duke’s van service (SafeRides) or UNCCH’s Point-to-Point (P2P). Students use both programs frequently, but maybe not for the reasons that administrators hope for. UNC-CH’s Crosa joked that the “Point-to-Point is also known as Partyto-Party” and Duke students have been known to use the van service as transportation to certain off-campus activities.

While the route may serve multiple aims, the shuttle service offers extremely practical and reliable methods of avoiding a dangerous walk at night.

Phones and buses are helpful safety mechanisms, but sometimes it is people themselves who provide the greatest sense of campus comfort. In order to add that human touch, UNC-CH also offers a new program called Safe Walk. With a central location at the library, UNC-CH students can request a pair of Safe Walkers to accompany them anywhere on campus until 3 a.m.

Although it is new, Safe Walk is already a popular program.

“I think it’s a fantastic idea, and it would be great if Duke could incorporate something similar,” said Colucci. “Especially walking from [Duke’s] engineering quad, it’s really removed from the main quad, and knowing that there was someone who could always walk with me would be very comforting.”

Further evidence of campus safety measures is visible campus police. Though Duke and UNC-CH both have a constant police presence, the officers in uniform are of questionable comfort to students.

“My fear of walking at night isn’t appeased by knowing the police are there,” said Colucci. “It’s very abstract, and when I’m walking alone at night… knowing they’re somewhere on campus isn’t really helpful.”

While students may not feel entirely protected while wandering at night, they

do think campus police help deter potential criminals. “If someone is looking to commit a crime,” adds Umpress, “I think they’ll feel a lot more hesitant if they just see the police are there.”

In addition to supplying the shuttle services, Help Phones, and police support, our universities hope to help students feel confident in their own abilities to protect themselves. UNC-CH offers a self-defense PE course in addition to a 12-hour self defense course, and Duke offers numerous workshops on crime prevention and awareness. These programs are wellintentioned, but sometimes their aims are intangible to students.

“The idea of getting assaulted or raped is just so abstract compared to everything else I have going on,” said Colucci. “I’ll start to worry, but then my meeting in two hours becomes more pressing, and I can’t think about a 12-hour course.” As a busy student, Colucci suggests an alternative, more manageable self-defense course: “one every three weeks or so, an hour long, almost like a fitness class,” she suggests. “Just something you could plan around and still attend.”

When asked what students would like to see changed about campus safety, very few

surprised when there’s a new announcement of security,” said Crosa. “There are so many things I wouldn’t have thought of that become a great feature,” he said. As Duke and UNC-CH keep up their innovations and diligence, students continue to enjoy their college experience without worrying too much about safety.

people have immediate answers. Duke and UNCCH’s ever-evolving safety mechanisms prevent major problems relating to students’ sense of comfort around campus. To address the most prevalent concerns, students may just wish for an extra light, phone, or someone to walk with late at night.

Tyler Mofield, a UNC-CH sophomore from Vass, NC said, “since I only work ten hours, it’s easier to balance school and work. I would imagine more hours would be super stressful though.”

Before accepting a part-time job, ask yourself these questions: What is my primary reason for wanting a part-time job? How many and which hours do I want to work a week? Can I put my schoolwork first and keep things balanced?

Michaela Dwyer, a Duke sophomore from Chapel Hill, NC, feels that her work-study position at Perkins Library fits her schedule and interests well. Beyond offering its work-study students the chance to fit in homework when library traffic is slow, Perkins aligns particularly well with Dwyer’s academic interests. A recently declared English major, Dwyer said “working at the library allows for a nice balance of being around books, interacting with people and getting to know students through the books they’re checking out…it corresponds well with my major and interest in literature.”

Duke sophomore Molly Superfine agrees that it is useful to find work doing something you enjoy. “I work at Duke’s Nasher Museum of Art. I think I want to work at an art museum some day, so I searched to see if there was any availability at the museum,” said Superfine. Superfine is an art history and Spanish double-major.

Other students share Superfine’s sentiments. Mofield said, “If you get a job doing something you love, like science for me, then working isn’t nearly as difficult as it would be if you hated it.” Mofield found her job through the Carolina Covenant and works through the Federal Work-Study program for Morehead chemistry labs.

College students can use their school’s resources to find a job that is a good match for them. Many have found ways to balance their responsibilities. “It makes my days incredibly busy!” said Superfine. “The balance of work and school is tough. I have to allocate my time between staying on top of classes and also being dedicated to my

Students who are eligible for work-study can search Duke List or work with the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid to find part-time or work-study job opportunities at Duke and UNC-CH, respectively.

Work-Study is funded mainly by the federal government. The program allows students in need to earn part of their financial aid through employment on campus and in community service agencies.

However, for students who are not eligible for work-study, it can sometimes be more difficult to find on-campus jobs.

Duke’s Center for Civic Engagement (DCCE) and UNC-CH’s Careerolina online site provide some additional resources for students seeking jobs. DCCE employs Duke students in the America Reads and America Counts programs, and Careerolina connects students to both on and off-campus jobs that may not be part of work-study programs.

Whether your financial aid package

encourages employment or you just do not want to rely on mom and dad for spending money, many people prove that when it comes to juggling work, class, and much more, Duke and UNC-CH students know how to get the job done.

s Duke University students prepare for their senior year, an option never before available presents itself: the chance to live off campus. Many students, engrossed in their selective living or fraternity or blocking group, dismiss the idea without much consideration. Why leave a living situation that includes friends down the hall and parties just around the corner? Living on campus provides easy access to campus life, access which students recognize as crucial.

I chose to live off campus precisely to create distance. My junior year slipped by in a flash as chance encounters on the plaza turned into all-night talks and as tickets to The Blanks or DUI found their way into my hands. On campus, surrounded by cook-outs, concerts and speakers, it is so easy to fill every minute of your time.

This aspect of Duke is paradoxically wonderful and painful: Duke offers so much to do but you feel terrible that you can’t do it all. Your desire to take advantage of the plethora of opportunities turns into a compounded pressure not to miss out.

Now that I live off campus, the flurry

of social events is under my premeditated supervision. Distance forces me to decide ahead of time which events are most important and merit a special trip to campus.

In effect, Duke events feel more valuable and more relaxing, precisely because of the effort they require.

There are many other reasons offcampus living appealed to me. When you spend all of your time on Duke’s campus, you forget that anything else exists. My apartment, nestled in the woods out past Highway 15-501, serves as a reminder that Duke is not the center of my world; I have other priorities and other responsibilities and Duke is just one part of the whole. By having my own place, I reclaim possession of my life. My apartment allows me to step out of the chaos and take an undisturbed breath between hectic days of class, papers, projects and exams. Off campus, you feel like your time is your own.

ing the building and a gym that never closes. (I still haven’t figured out why Wilson closes so early. Don’t they know college students are just taking their first breaks at midnight?) In an off-campus apartment, your front door opens into Durham, not into the Duke bubble. I have a chance to interact with people outside the usual student profile.

From my porch I can watch two little boys ride their bikes up and down the sidewalk and chase each other around with toy guns. A casual chat with a neighbor by the pool reveals her riveting story of how she waited for a lung transplant and finally got the surgery. Reminded of the realities of life outside the college lifestyle, I have become a part of a world of vastly expanded possibilities. My apartment is my connection to that world.

To be fair, my apartment has its drawbacks. I do not enjoy waking up thirty minutes earlier to drive, park and walk to class. And I no longer enjoy the luxury of a cleaning staff. When my boyfriend visited and asked, “Is it safe to shower in there?” I realized I may have let my sanitary standards fall. I have to take out my own trash and buy my own toilet paper.

The true proof of the value of my housing choice, however, comes in the unconscious way I talk about my place.

When I lived on campus, I would say, “I’m heading back to my room,” at the end of the evening. This year, as I say goodnight to friends and gather my belongings, I say something with a little more meaning: “I’m going home.”

Perfectly Content in Neverland

T

he other day, some friends and I took a road trip that really sparked some meaningful dialogue. Granted, we only went to the Food Lion on 15-501, but if you’re car-less in college you know how awesome getting a ride to the grocery store can be.

We discovered some things about ourselves in that Food Lion. I, for one, found that I still like to ride in the children’s seat of the grocery cart- even if it means knocking down (and having to pay for) a whole case of glass jars of pickles. Turns out the threat “ou break it you buy it,” is more than a threat.

As I am checking out with some broken pickle jars and 3 boxes of Toaster Strudels, I pick up a copy of The New York Times, hoping to be enlightened about the new NASA program or the reconstruction of the American economy. Instead, I find a column entitled “What is it about 20-somethings?” And it’s not about NASA.

“

The column, which outlines how “young people are taking longer to reach adulthood overall” was overtly offensive and riddled with stereotypical portraits of the lazy, live-at-home college graduate wasting his life away while playing video games in between marathon Cheetoseating sessions. Some of the best writers in America appeared to have pooled together to commission an article intending to offend and infuriate a group of people who lack the political and financial power to retaliate.

You know, the one where you graduate college, move back in with your parents and realize you have no marketable skills while your parents (who keep telling you that you’re “special” to your face) talk behind your back about how to get you out of their house. Nobody wants that life. Now,

it’s not a choice for most; 2009 was the second worst year in U.S. history for college graduates to find employment. If you want 20-somethings to welcome the idea of economic independence, give them an economy that offers a chance to prosper.

You see, I’m almost 20. I realize that these years are fleeting. I’m going to enjoy the time I have by not buying a single vegetable when I go to the grocery store.

I’m going to appreciate the sanity I maintain before I begin pluralizing words that shouldn’t be—like “the Wal-Marts.”

Oh, I know I may be getting a ‘late start on life.’ I don’t have six kids, a minivan or a mortgage. But it’s 2010. And let me be clear: that is not the life I’m ever going to want.

A Wise Woman Once Said...

An encounter with a despairing young girl led Duke professor Sheryl Broverman to build the Women’s Institute for Secondary Education and Research (WISER), a program that provides Kenyan girls greater access to education. Learn how Broverman hopes to empower a generation of Kenyan girls to become confident, wise leaders.

W

hen Dr. Sheryl Broverman, Associate Professor of Biology at Duke University, witnessed Judy sobbing about her parents’ lack of support for their daughter’s desire to go to school, the idea for the Women’s Institute for Secondary Education and Research (WISER) began to take root.

Six weeks later, Broverman discovered that Judy, a young girl from Muhuru Bay, Kenya, had been forcibly married to her assistant principal in exchange for five cows. Judy ran away from the marriage, but Broverman’s initial moral outrage fueled the Duke professor’s pursuit to develop a partnership that would educate and empower girls in the Muhuru Bay community.

While researching the effects of HIV and gender disparities in the area, Broverman learned about Muhuru Bay from her colleague, Dr. Rose Odhiambo. Dr. Odhiambo was the first girl from her community to attend college. In Muhuru Bay, the prevalence of HIV/AIDS is 38 percent due in part to its location on Lake Victoria. The girls frequently turn to transactional sex with fishermen in order to secure funds that allow them to attend school. The money also allows girls to purchase school and other hygienic supplies. Without this source of income, the girls find themselves unable to pursue their educations. WISER provides these girls an outlet for education and also seeks to transform the community’s perception of the value of girls’ education.

When WISER was in its early phases of development, Broverman and students led a series of workshops with the community in order to discuss both the creation of a secondary school for the girls as well as ways to address the structural constraints that limit girls’ educational pursuits. The families of Muhuru Bay do not object to a girl seeking an education; rather, girls’ repeatedly failing test scores reinforce the idea that a girl’s education is wasteful and impractical.

community an opportunity to address the lack of educational opportunities for its girls. As a result, community members united in order to empower their young women. The tree under which the community held these gatherings ultimately became a symbol of WISER’s mission to change the lives of Kenyan girls and serves to remind all those involved to listen to community voices. Through the establishment of a secondary school that provides room and board for girls, in addition to WiserBridge, a school-district wide program meant to transition Muhuru Bay boys and girls from primary to secondary school, WISER holds fast to its mission: To improve educational, economic, and health outcomes for girls; create gender allies in boys; and promote community-wide enhancements in health and development.

Although WISER aims to improve educational access for young women,

men—and their acknowledgement of the importance of education for women—are a crucial piece of the equation.

“Boys and young men are critical stakeholders and they hold considerable power in effecting change,” said Broverman. “We need to have them invested in caring about having educated women in their communities.”

Broverman believes that WISER serves the entire community by producing a ripple effect that extends beyond girls’ education, thus becoming a “ very powerful level for multiple forms of social change.” Yet, women’s rights are also currently rising to the surface as Kenya finds itself in the midst of reevaluating its constitution, debating an equal rights amendment, and encouraging the involvement of women in parliament.

WISER’s influential ripples certainly travel far and wide: many Duke students have become invested in the project’s mission and have traveled to Kenya with Dr.

Emily Matthews, a recent Duke graduate and former Robertson Scholar, traveled to Muhuru Bay in the summer of 2006 to research barriers to girls’ success in secondary school. Matthews commends WISER for its “emphasis on equal partnership…between all parties.” She is grateful for the new perspective WISER has given her on community development.

“My involvement has taught me how, as someone born into privilege,” Matthews says, “I can engage with communities in need by not belittling, stereotyping, or dehumanizing them.”

By working for WISER, Matthews lent her skills and support to an international movement to improve girls’ access to education. According to the World Bank’s website, keeping girls in school benefits the nation’s physical and economical well-be-

WISER: The Duke Student Experience Anjali Vora,Co-President of WISER Club at Duke University “I got involved in WISER at the beginning of my sophomore year because I was intrigued by the partnership that had been established between Duke and Muhuru Bay…My [later] involvement with WISER in Kenya brought new meaning to my role as co-President of Duke’s WISER Club, because I had an increased fervor to make the Duke campus aware of the struggles that girls encountered every single day. During CampWISER (a two week camp for 20 secondary girls and 20 secondary boys), I taught the health class and saw the misconceptions associated with puberty, STDs and HIV contraction through our class. I believe that it is so important to continue to educate people at Duke and in the US about why health education must be tailored to a specific audience, in order to create effective interventions.

The WISERBridge program aims to improve KCPE (Kenyan Certification of Primary Education) scores for students in standard eight so that they can attend secondary school. Teachers are trained to plan lessons and improve students’ English, while students are encouraged to do well through study sessions and the prospect of seeing their names as the high scores when their KCPE scores are publicly released. The program is injected at all levels of the education system so that an effective change can be made.

I taught computer lessons at the basic and intermediate levels to primary school teachers, and with practice and utilization, computer usage could increase their efficiency. The WISERBridge program is just one valuable aspect of WISER, but it highlights the importance of including males in the fight for improving the status of females and closing the inequality gap.”

Anjali Vora, a Duke senior and CoPresident of the student-led WISER Club, learned first-hand about the conditions that keep Kenyan children—particularly girls—out of school. The inability to afford feminine hygiene products during menstrual cycles is a common reason girls fall behind and may eventually drop out of school. Reflecting on her assignment to transcribe group interviews with primary school students, Vora said, “hearing these students speak so candidly about experiences that I have never even encountered brought these health, education, and economic issues to the forefront of my mind.”

In four years, Broverman hopes to see the first WISER students graduate from secondary school and later college, with the ultimate goal for these girls being economic independence and social autonomy. Still, each day presents a new opportunity for girls in the Muhuru Bay community.

“I am amazed by the resilience of these young girls who have been both emotionally and physically battered by their communities,” said Broverman. “Everything always comes down to the faces of these girls: the excitement, the ambition, the drive, the happiness. When we first started this project by talking to the community, our sessions were called ‘Dream Big’ and the girls are continuing to do that; they have big plans for themselves.”

Graduation is a celebration of four years of hard work, but what comes next? Rival catches up with a few recent graduates to find out how they are coping with their transition to the real world.

L

ike a modern-day Peter Pan, the typical college undergraduate spends his or her final year of college living the mantra “I won’t grow up”. But, when the real world finally catches up with Pomp and Circumstance on that particular day in May, students become grown-ups whether they’re prepared or not.

Some students graduate with the promise of jobs, internships or admittance to law school, while others simply have a general life direction, with a ticket home and ideas for the future. Not everyone knows what to expect from this brand new life. But one thing is certain: living in the real world offers a fresh set of challenges to overcome.

For recent Duke University graduate Matthew Pilnik, post-graduate life was a challenging adjustment. Thrust suddenly into a life that requires structure and a healthy sleeping schedule, Pilnik says, “one of the hardest parts about not being in college anymore is having responsibilities.

Pilnik, who lives and works in Durham, graduated with a major in history and a minor in philosophy. He currently holds a human resources internship with the same company he worked with the summer before his senior year.

Pilnik explains, “whether you want to call it growing up, or what, it creeps up on you. You learn how to be a real person.

Like today I woke up early, before my alarm – it was 5:45 a.m. I slept in the other day and it was 8:15. 8:15!”

After graduation, Pilnik had trouble finding a job until he decided to take a second internship. Now he works full-time and has the opportunity to become an employee when his internship is finished in December.

“I started working there in August, and my manager has been gradually increasing my responsibilities and the number of projects I work on,” says Pilnik. “One thing I’ve learned is, now I know how to manage my time. I don’t let things get away from me. Before, it was like I could tune out the teacher in class if it was boring and make up for it later. Now there’s a schedule every day that I have to be prepared for. My boss tells me what I have to have done and I do it. I don’t just put it off until the last

second.”

Although the job market has picked up considerably for graduates in the last year, the practice of audition hires is becoming more and more common. An organization will offer an internship first—a test run of sorts— and hire later.

So, because basketball season is just around the corner, because I love rap, and just because it’s fun, we’re going to compare players from the current UNC-CH basketball team with your favorite rap stars.

Known around campus not only as a top recruit but also as a trash-talking sensation, Bullock appeared in a couple YouTube videos staunchly proclaiming that Kyrie Irving (Duke’s top recruit) couldn’t guard him. Maybe it doesn’t compare to Tupac claiming he slept with Biggie’s wife, but hey, it’s trash talk.

Larry Drew II — T.I.

Remember when T.I. had that show on MTV called “Road to Redemption,” an effort to help kids avoid the mistakes that put him in jail? Well, who needs redemption more than Larry Drew, the most scrutinized player on the UNC-CH basketball team? T.I. made it back, but then again he also got busted for drugs this September and might go to jail (again). Let’s just hope Kendall Marshall will be really good.

Cudi is still kind of new, and could be really popular one day, but then again he probably won’t be. I’m sure Marshall is good, but can he turn into Kanye West or will he just stay Kid Cudi?

Amidst the on-going health care debate in the U.S., Sun takes a look at Costa Rica’s health care system and its emphasis on preventative care.

r. Justo Venereo, a Costa Rican physician, explains the first rule of thumb for taking a pulse as I search along the wrist of an indigenous worker in the makeshift clinic we set up earlier in the week. Dr. Venero tells us to think of the thumb as an antenna to a radio, one that leads to the pulse at the base of the bone along the wrist. I finally locate a rhythmic surge of blood just underneath the skin and Dr. Venereo confirms that the pulse is strong, but quicker than normal.

The worker, a Ngöbe man who probably emigrated from Panama, lives in a small community of mostly indigenous people near the Panamanian border in Costa Rica in a tropical paradise surrounded by both a wealth of biodiversity and relative poverty.

Our patient eventually gets an inhaler and antibiotics for his respiratory infection, but the lesson continues for our study abroad class as we investigate primary care in Costa Rica.

This is no ordinary study abroad. The program, run by the Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS) in Costa Rica and supported in large part by Duke University, hosts a group of university students from around the U.S. every semester to learn about global health in a real-world context. Other universities around the world provide support for OTS as well, among them the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Aside from learning the basics of primary care, students also learn the importance of primary care in the Costa Rican health system.

Amid the debate over health care improvement in the U.S., other countries have already discovered the secret to providing quality health at an efficient cost.

Costa Rica’s basic healthcare tenets rest on

the strength of its primary care program.

Based on efficiency and accessibility of care, the World Health Organization ranked the Costa Rican healthcare system 36th in the world, just above that of the U.S. at 37th.

Some groups in the U.S. have noticed the benefits of preventative medicine, and both the Duke and UNC-CH healthcare systems have increased their focuses on delivering primary care to neglected communities by devoting more resources to local clinics and outreach programs. The UNC-CH health system released its first Community Services Report in 2009, which detailed its work in clinics and charity care. Duke also has an entire primary care network with around 20 clinics in five North Carolina counties.

In Costa Rica, however, primary care is the foundation upon which the rest of the health system operates. The most basic unit of care in Costa Rica is the local clinic, called Equipo Básico de Atención Integral en Salud (EBAIS), and it provides standard tests and procedures to the majority of the population. The entire working population and dependent families are covered under a state-mandated insurance called Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (Caja). Employers, the government and employees all pay a share to ensure that everyone in the system can get the care they need, regardless of pre-existing conditions or income.

Not only are the clinics available for walk-ins, but EBAIS groups also employ specialized medical technicians that make house calls and ensure that even people who are disabled or who live in remote areas are seen for regular checkups. More difficult cases are referred to regional hospitals and clinics that are outfitted with advanced

labs and specialized physicians. Required referrals to hospitals, both regional and specialized, streamline the system and ensure that patients in the hospital are the ones that really need intensive care. All necessary operations and procedures are covered for patients in the Caja system so this referral method also reduces waste by ensuring care is delivered to only those who need it, therefore spreading healthcare to all aspects of society in an equitable manner.

Furthermore, patients wishing to avoid the frequently long lines generated by a centralized system can visit private clinics or pharmacies by paying out-of-pocket with private insurance.

Despite differences between the two countries, the Costa Rican example can provide instrumental lessons in improving healthcare as a whole in the U.S., especially as health care is evolving and becoming more centralized with recent legislation.

The U.S. model is a patchwork of different systems, but for most people it is primarily based on private insurers, pharmacies and hospitals. Dr. Jorge Benavides, a professor with the OTS Global Health program, says that one of the main problems with LEFT: A small waterfall near the Boruca indigenous community in southern Costa Rica.

health care in the U.S. is equity. He practices medicine in Costa Rica but interned at Massachusetts General Hospital, which works in conjunction with Harvard Medical School to provide some of the best medical technologies and professionals in the world. However, care received at this elite hospital is hardly representative of the nation as a whole.

Another issue is a comparatively underdeveloped primary health program.

Nations like Costa Rica save money and prevent illness by urging the populace to check-up their health regularly and by expanding access to primary care. Those insured in the U.S. have access to these programs as well, but coverage and education is not uniform throughout the nation, leaving cracks in what should be a broad focus on preventative care. When I asked Dr. Benavides how to improve primary care in the U.S., he jokingly suggested to ¨create it.¨ Despite steps in the right direction, the centerpieces of both Duke and UNC-CH’s healthcare, and indeed of most systems in the U.S., are still large hospitals that provide all levels of care and are generally frequented by those who are insured and able to pay. While Duke and UNC-CH may be part of a growing trend to update services independent of national regulation, the nation as a whole could benefit from an increase of primary care and centralization of healthcare. Here in Costa Rica, health care is not a service or a luxury of the deserving; it is a basic right that everyone helps provide for their fellow countrymen.

For more than one hundred years, The Chronicle, Duke’ University’s widely respected (did it ever win anything?) student-run newspaper, has provided students with a source of news and has educated the campus about the field of journalism. LINDSEY RUPP, a junior English major from Durham, North Carolina, carries on The Chronicle legacy as the newspaper’s current editor-in-chief. Rupp joined The Chronicle team as a freshman after much hesitation. As the previous editor-in-chief of her high school’s newspaper. Rupp desired to try something different at Duke. Now the public face for The Chronicle, Rupp spends 60 hours per week answering requests, complaints, questions and comments, attending budget meetings, deciding on the layout of the next issue and fact-checking articles. “What I consider the best part of my daily job is being a resource to other writers and other editors at the paper…The Chronicle is a teaching paper, and that process is incredible to be a part of.”

Aside from having almost completed the major with a focus on business journalism, Frier’s time working at the Daily Tar Heel has significantly shaped her college experience. Working for the university’s newspaper was an ambition of Frier’s even before leaving her hometown of Los Altos, Calif. in 2007, and once she got to UNC-CH, she chased that goal. Frier started working at the Daily Tar Heel’s features desk and has worked her way up to her current position of editor-in-chief. “The Daily Tar Heel is really great because it is a constant learning experience for everyone involved,” Frier says.

“There is always new blood coming through with new ideas, consistently inspiring me to work there.”

If you have ever seen Duke University Improv (DUI, the university’s only improv comedy group) perform on campus, you have likely noticed something obvious: there are a lot of guys on stage. Currently, DUI is a 12-member group with three female members. JESSICA HENDIN, a Duke sophomore from Chesterfield, MO, was accepted into the group along with sophomore Julianne Kolb last year after DUI’s multiple rounds of tryouts. When Kolb and Hendin tried out, no women were currently in DUI. The group recently selected a female first-year student in its final round of auditions, which makes the group one quarter female. Despite increasing numbers of women in DUI, Hendin says the group never aims for a particular gender ratio. “We pick the funniest people regardless of anything,” she says. When asked whether being in a predominantly male group changes Hendin’s DUI experience, she says “it makes it enjoyable…I’ve never been a ‘girly girl.’ This way, it’s like having a bunch of brothers to hang around with.”

JACK GALLAGHER, a senior at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and owner of Gallagher Entertainment, got into the music industry before he knew much at all about music. Gallagher’s first venture in the business resulted from his desire to respond to victims of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

A junior in high school at the time, Gallagher organized a competition for local bands called “Bringing Back the Bayou.” The successful event was hosted by Carrboro music hotspot, Cat’s Cradle, and resulted in an internship where he learned to organize and promote the venue’s upcoming performances. The UNC-CH student started Gallagher Entertainment in 2005 and now manages hip-hop artist K.O. Kid, who recently opened for the band Chiddy Bang at Cat’s Cradle in August. Gallagher is also in charge of hip-hop promotion for Cat’s Cradle in addition to helping organize events for bars in Chapel Hill.
