letter from the editor BASKETBALL 2015 In our past two issues, I shared my perspective on what makes RIVAL multidimensional and innovative—two important qualities of the magazine itself. So far, I haven’t described what it’s like to work on the production team.

I use the word “team” for two reasons: one, because this is our esteemed Basketball issue, and two, because working for RIVAL is like playing on a basketball team. I’m no expert on shot clock violations or zone defense—just ask our Sports Editor—but my first semester as Editor-in-Chief taught me a lot about managing a team.

Coach K, Coach Roy and I face a similar challenge. Before we start the season, we have to find a way of motivating each team member to internalize a common purpose. As a team leader, how do you shift focus from individual concerns to collective action? How do you make the game, the magazine really matter to everyone involved? Not just one player’s performance or one writer’s story, but what the team as a whole can achieve. The challenge, then, is ensuring that each member is equally invested in the team’s success.

I’ve found that one way of accomplishing this kind of unity is playing to the strengths of each team member. On RIVAL’s Executive Staff, I deal with all the words, Alex practically lives in Photoshop and InDesign, Jake speaks sports terminology, Aleise distinguishes JPGs from PNGs, Catalina employs her exquisite aesthetic sense, and Kate manages funds and Facebook alike. No one of us could do another’s job as well, just as a point guard has a different role than a forward.

Over the past semester, we’ve worked together to share responsibility, balancing each team member’s unique strengths, weaknesses, talents, and visions about how to innovate. I’m convinced that in magazine production and basketball alike, collaboration is the name of the game.

Pregame Duke

When Cameron is packed to capacity, few things distract the Crazies from their team. Yet throughout the game, one group of girls does just that. Duke Cheerleaders are a constant in Duke sports, identifiable by their lipsticked smiles, beribboned hair and immaculate uniforms. As they backflip across the floor to the cheers of the crowd, their routines follow precise, clean lines.

They radiate enthusiasm, dancing across the floor while never breaking a sweat, energizing the crowd regardless of the score. Behind that effortless perfection is what freshman cheerleader Sarah Doom calls “sacrifice and commitment” as well as “hard work and passion.”

Duke Cheerleading, a varsity sport that is active both on campus and in the local community, is composed of two teams: Blue Squad and White Squad (akin to Varsity and JV). Blue Squad cheers Men’s Basketball and travels to games, while White squad performs for Women’s Basketball and travels only to bowl games.

Freshmen like Doom are automatically placed on White Squad, while upperclassmen like Briana Middleton, a Blue Squad member, can try out for the more advanced team. Easing into collegiate cheerleading through White Squad helped Middleton to develop the skills to succeed in higher-intensity situations.

In many ways, Duke Cheer is unique. Unlike most collegiate teams, every cheerleader at Duke is female, which Doom believes creates a sort of close sisterhood.

Due to a 1980s accident involving the opposing team’s cheerleaders, no Blue Devil or visiting team’s cheerleaders are allowed to stunt on campus. As a result, the team

specializes in tumbling and choreographed routines.

This has led Duke Cheer to develop over past decades into what Doom calls a “classic cheer program—cleancut and steeped in tradition.” In some ways, the program is a glimpse back in time. Routines for some songs, such as “Devil with the Blue Dress On,” utilize the original 60s choreography. The team, which doesn’t compete, focuses on enthusiasm and school spirit, a fact that hasn’t changed over time.

Outside the athletic sphere, cheerleading is a constant presence. Each girl has her own reason to try out; many, like Middleton, loved cheer in high school and wanted to fulfill their passion at Duke. In contrast, Doom had never cheered before, but wanted a way to show school spirit. She went through intensive cheer training over the summer in hopes of making the team this fall, and hasn’t stopped working hard since she succeeded.

Cheerleaders dedicate around 20 hours a week to the sport, including time spent at games. As varsity athletes, workouts are intensive, varying from gymnastics and tumbling to dancing and cardio. The time commitment is a challenge, but one that the girls are ready to accept.

As Doom says, “Cheer needs to be your biggest commitment outside of school,” and this commitment brings the girls together. “We’re a family,” Doom says, “One that I know will be there for me.”

When Duke cheerleaders drag their bodies back from practice, exhausted from keeping the crowd energized for hours, others may be tempted to wonder why they cheer. But to those who have found in cheerleading a community, growth, fun, and friendship, the answer is obvious. “I wouldn’t trade my team or the ability to cheer for Duke for anything,” Doom says. “It’s been an incredible journey and I love it so much!”

Monday and Wednesday, three-hour long practices.

Tuesday and Thursday, weightlifting sessions with UNCCH football trainers. Saturday, football games.

Believe it or not, this grueling schedule isn’t for the football team, but for the UNC-CH varsity cheerleading squad. The idea that cheerleading is simply cartwheeling and clapping is simply a misconception. Rather, these athletes combine acrobatics and pageantry to serve as the enthusiastic base at Tar Heel sporting events.

Most cheerleaders at UNC-CH had previous experience with cheerleading before becoming Tar Heels. Katy Thompson, a sophomore JV cheerleader, did competitive cheerleading for 10 years, and Robbie Anderson, a former cheerleader and 2014 alumnus, had a background in cheerleading, dance, and gymnastics.

While previous experience helps with necessary skills, college cheerleading requires a whole new level of athleticism. “It was a completely different ballgame when I joined the Carolina squad because I had never lifted a weight before,” Thompson says. “I don’t think people understand how hard we work because we are not recognized by the NCAA as a sport.”

Most freshmen and sophomores join the JV cheerleading squad to spend time adjusting to the team’s requirements. The JV squad cheers at home football games and varsity Women’s Basketball home games, and the varsity squad cheers at both home and away football games as well as home Men’s Basketball games.

Besides verbal cheers, Tar Heel cheerleaders perform

a variety of acrobatic stunts and tumbling. The coaches like their cheerleaders to be able to perform a standing tuck, which is a backflip with knees bent from a standing position, and a back handspring, a backward jump onto hands with legs together.

Some basic co-ed stunts are shoulder sits, when the female flyer sits on the base’s shoulders, and toss hands, when the flyer jumps to stand in the base’s hands.

Anderson’s favorite stunt is when the flyer does a back handspring and then jumps into a cupie—the man holding the girl’s feet together in one hand.

Being a UNC-CH cheerleader creates lifelong memories. During the NCAA tournament, the varsity squad travels around the country, accompanying the basketball team in private airplanes. “I got to go to a bunch of really cool places—Albuquerque, New Mexico; Spokane, Washington; Kansas City, Kansas,” Anderson says. “It took me to a lot of places I’ve never been before.”

UNC-CH cheerleading is part of Thompson’s history.

Her mom and sister both tried out for the team, but did not make the final roster. Now, she has a second family.

“My favorite part of cheering, I know it sounds cheesy, is the camaraderie and friendships,” Thompson says.

“I’ve never before developed the kind of friendships that I have developed in the last year and a half with these people.”

Being on the cheerleading squad has taught Anderson valuable lessons beyond being on the court when the Tar Heels beat Duke in the Dean Dome. “It taught me to have pride in what you do,” he says. “No matter if you win or lose, you have to have pride in yourself and your school.”

A Brief History of Welcome Coach K Three years after leading the Blue Devils to their first title game appearance since Bubas’ ’64 team, Coach Bill Foster left Duke for the Gamecocks of South Carolina. His replacement? An unknown Army coach named Mike Krzyzewski.

First Game On March 2, then Trinity College played its first basketball game against Wake Forest. Wake won the game 24-10 at Angier B. Duke Gymnasium, now known as East Campus’s The Ark.

K-Ville is born

Led by Coach Vic Bubas and National Player of the Year Art Heyman, the Blue Devils reached their first Final Four in school history before losing to eventual champion Loyola (Il.) 74-71. The following year, Bubas took the Devils back to the Final Four, but lost again to the National Champion, this time UCLA, in the title game.

After a late night playing quarters, Mirecourt senior Kimberly Reed—and 15 of her friends—decided to pitch a tent to wait in line a week before the upcoming Carolina Game. By the time game day came along, 75 tents lined the Card Gym parking lot, giving rise to one of the most iconic traditions in all of college sports.

Breaking the color barrier Hall of Fame Coach Dean Smith wasn’t just a revolutionary on the basketball court. In 1967, he brought in freshman guard Charlie Scott, UNC-CH’s first African-American scholarship athlete.

The Tar Heels played their first game on January 27 against Virginia Christian at Bynum Gymnasium (now Bynum Hall). The Heels won the game by an impressive 42-21 margin.

Legendary Coach Frank McGuire and All-American Lennie Rosenbluth led the Tar Heels to their first National Championship in a thrilling, triple overtime upset of top-ranked Kansas. The victory capped off a perfect 32-0 season.

After a demoralizing 103-73 loss in the 1990 championship game against the UNLV Running Rebels, the Blue Devils won their first title in a 72-65 win against a Kansas team coached by a man named Roy Williams. The Devils got revenge against the Rebs with a two-point win in the Final Four.

It wasn’t pretty, but Coach K won his 1000th career game with a 77-68 comeback victory against St. John’s (NY) at Madison Square Garden, the same venue where he became Division-I’s all-time winningest coach four years prior.

Back-to-Back Led once again by Christian Laettner, Grant Hill, and Bobby Hurley, the Blue Devils became the first back-to-back champions since the 1973 UCLA squad with a 20-point blowout against the Fab Five of Michigan.

Tar Heel fans couldn’t have asked for a better first game at the newly opened Dean Smith Center: a 95-92 win over archrival Duke. Impressed by the Dean Dome’s size (more than twice that of Cameron Indoor Stadium), Duke All-American Johnny Dawkins famously quipped, “We need to get one of these.”

On March 2, 2010, the Tar Heels became the second program in Division-I history to reach 2000 wins after a 69-62 victory against Miami. In the last home game of their UNC-CH careers, seniors Deon Thompson and Will Graves led the team in scoring with 14 and 16 points, respectively.

The Basketball Encyclopedia:

Airball: n. A shot that makes you wonder if you’re watching College Basketball or a YMCA pickup game, this occurs when the ball fails to touch the rim, net, or backboard, usually followed by chants of, “Airball! Airball!”

Argyle: n. A fancy diamond pattern, usually found on dress socks and sweaters, that has absolutely no place on a basketball court. Somehow, UNC-CH players manage to make it look snazzy.

Big: n. A tall player. Short for “big man.”

Block/Charge: n. The most difficult call in all of sports. During a collision between an offensive player who has the ball and a defensive player, it is an offensive foul if the referee rules that the defensive player was in a legal guarding position (with his feet set outside of the restricted area) AND the offensive player was out of control. The ball is then awarded to the defensive team. However, if the defensive player was moving his feet prior to the collision AND the offensive player maintained control during his drive, it is a defensive foul. While some block/charge calls are clear-cut, many are objective and could go either (read: the home team’s) way. Not to be confused with a blocked shot. See also: Flop, Duke Charge, Restricted Area.

Bonus, The: n. After a team records seven fouls in one half of the game, all of its subsequent fouls—even non-shooting ones—result in the “one-and-one.” After its tenth team foul, the opposing team shoots two free throws. This is known as the double-bonus. TLDR: If you keep fouling, the other team gets to shoot free throws. See also: One-and-One. Clutch: adj. A symptom of having ice in your veins. All the hand-waving and seas of baby-blue can’t stop someone like this.

Also known as your ace, 007, secret weapon, or Christian Laettner, this is the person who you want to take the last shot with the game on the line.

Coach K: The all-time winningest coach in Division-I Men’s history, winner of four National Championships, and the first Men’s coach to win 1000 career games. Some say he made a deal with the (Blue) Devil to keep his hair that unnatural shade of black long after his natural rival, Coach Roy, succumbed to father time and went gray.

Coach Roy: Chapel Hill’s favorite son, the first Tar Heel head coach to have played for and been an assistant coach for the Heels. Despite having won two National Championships (and one more as an assistant), Coach Roy will always be (in)famous for his interesting taste in ties.

Diaper Dandy: n. A talented freshman player. See also: Vitale, Dick.

Duke Charge: n. For many years, Duke bigs weren’t especially big or athletic, making it difficult to block shots. Instead, they became known for selling charge calls. See also: Flop.

Flop: v. To throw oneself on the floor in a manner resembling the spastic movement of a fish out of water in order to sell a foul call. See also: Duke Charge.

Game Clock: n. The yellowish numbers over the basket, this countdown keeps track of how much time is left until you can cry with joy or weep in pure misery. Not to be confused with the larger and noisier shot clock.

Heat check: n. A long range, seemingly random, often ill-advised jump shot meant to test how hot a player is. Players usually take a heat check after hitting a few shots in a row, or if they happen to be Quinn Cook. See also: Hot. Hot: adj. An extraordinary physical phenomenon in which the basket seems to expand in size exponentially, allowing a player to, in layman’s terms, get buckets.

Know your Hoops from A to Z Lottery: n. A system for students who aren’t loyal enough to live in a tent for a few weeks. The UNC-CH Athletics Ticket Office assigns tickets randomly, not based on who actually wants them most.

NC State: n. The annoying little brother of the basketball triangle. Stop trying to make the “trivalry” happen! It’s not going to happen.

One-and-One: n. The first free throws you get in the bonus. But you have to make the first to get a shot at the second. So no pressure. See also: Bonus.

Onions!: idm. An exclamation made famous by ESPN and CBS commentator Bill Raftery, usually following a clutch or game-winning shot. See also: Clutch.

Paint, The: n. The rectangular area in between the foul line and the basket. It is usually painted in the home team’s color to distinguish it from the rest of the court, hence its name.

Plumlee Dynasty, The (2008-Present): Since 2008, the Duke frontcourt has been ruled by this line of giants from Indiana, prompting many Duke females to add “Marry a Plumlee” to their college bucket lists. The current emperor of the Plumlee line, General Marshall “MP3,” is regarded as the largest and most athletic, but also least coordinated of his brothers, making him a natural fan favorite.

PTPer: n. Short for “Prime Time Performer”. A player known for playing his or her best during big games. See also: Vitale, Dick.

Restricted Area: n. That semi-circle in the paint underneath the rim. Basically, defensive players aren’t allowed to play defense there. See also: Paint, Block/Charge.

Shot clock: n. The large red numbers over the basket and underneath the game clock. The offensive team has 35 seconds (30 in Women’s Basketball) to take a shot, or else it’s a turnover. Not to be confused with the smaller, mellower game clock.

Storm the Court: idm. The controversial, yet oh-so-exhilarating act of rushing onto the court following a huge upset win at home, almost exclusively by the student section. Fans who expect to win never storm the court. Scoff. See also: NC State.

Tenting: n. A free-for-all system for students who aren’t smart enough to come up with a lottery. Duke students freeze their butts off for a month following a schedule that’s more difficult to decipher than the Block/Charge rule.

Three-Second Rule: n. The least-enforced rule in all of basketball. Offensive players aren’t allowed to stand still in the paint without the ball for more than three seconds, or else it’s a turnover and the other team gets the ball. In reality, referees give players a warning if they stand around in the paint too much. After that, the ref might call a violation after five seconds. Or not. See also: Paint.

Vitale, Dick: The patron Saint of college basketball. St. Vitale is famous for his basketball idioms and seemingly random tangents as well as crowdsurfing in the student section before tip-off. Also Known As: Dicky V. See also: PTPer, Diaper Dandy.

White, Stilman: The man, the myth, the legend. A virtual unknown, White took the reins at point guard for the Heels with surprising success after Kendall Marshall was injured in 2012, only to disappear mysteriously. Some say White was hanging with Elvis and Amelia Earhart in Atlantis. Others claim he was a member of Seal Team 6. A rumor gaining traction is that White was on a Mormon mission, but many have brushed this off as a CIA cover-up.

Twenty-four years ago, as the Tar Heels were preparing to play the Blue Devils at Cameron Indoor Stadium, a group of Duke students devised a scheme to throw argyle socks around the stadium as the Heels made their entrance. Carolina was wearing a new uniform with a strip of argyle patterned down each side, and Duke fans were ready to poke fun at the latest design. But Duke University’s Coach Krzyzewski stopped that plan in its tracks.

“Much to my dismay,” half-jokes fashion designer Alexander Julian, a Chapel Hill native who designed the Tar Heel uniforms that made their debut at this 1991 game. “It would have been national publicity. It would’ve been fantastic for me.”

Argyle, after all, is his trademark.

An essential staple of Julian’s menswear, the pattern has also become the hallmark of the Tar Heels’ iconic

uniforms 24 years later.

The Blue Devils’ uniforms are just as recognizable. The “aerographic” of the Duke Chapel on the back of each jersey ties Duke’s iconography right into the uniform. “It is almost like a tattoo that represents some deep and rich storytelling,” says Eric Lautenbach, senior director of college basketball sports marketing at NIKE, the company that has designed the Blue Devils’ uniforms since 1993. “Coach K has often said [the aerographic] allows for the basketball team to take the campus community with them when they go on the road.” The Blue Devils’ shorts are also popular. “[They have] become very much identified as the Duke short,” says Lautenbach.

Basketball uniforms have a long history, evolving over time as fashion trends shifted and designers innovated to produce more comfortable, stylish gear. Some of the first uniforms at UNC-CH and Duke in the early 1900s featured tight-hugging “short shorts.” Players wore

tank-top-style jerseys, tall socks and lace-up sneaks similar to Converse.

The modern uniforms, with longer shorts and advanced fabrics, are a far cry from those of the past.

“Most of the noted innovations have happened in the last 20 years,” says Lautenbach, who has worked at NIKE for almost 27 years. “The biggest change in the basketball uniform is the base layer evolution.”

These undergarments started out as accessories, but now NIKE sees them as an essential part of the uniform.

Inspired by popular street style, Julian designed baggier shorts for the Charlotte Hornets in 1988. He also introduced these shorts when he redesigned the Tar Heels’ uniforms in 1991, initiating a ripple effect as other college teams began to emulate the trend.

Both Lautenbach and Julian have a wealth of expertise in uniform design. “I have been working with Coach K and Duke University Basketball since the first day we

entered into this partnership…[in] 1993,” says Lautenbach. “Coach K has always charged me with having the best uniform in the industry, and so he has been open to how we have evolved the uniform.”

Julian had already designed activewear for tennis and golf and created uniforms for an IndyCar team when he received a special phone call in 1990. Dean Smith was on the other end of the line, asking Julian to redesign the Tar Heels’ uniforms. “[It] was akin to having God call and ask for new halos for the Archangels,” Julian says. “It was the toughest design challenge I ever had because if I screwed it up, I couldn’t go home.”

Both men are familiar with the process of designing a new uniform and coming to a consensus on its appearance. When a uniform update is necessary, Lautenbach starts by meeting with Coach Krzyzewski, Carol Krzyzewski, and sometimes Donna Krzyzewski or Mike Cragg, Duke’s deputy director of athletics/ operations. “It is very collaborative, and Coach has always been receptive once he sees the initial artwork,” says Lautenbach. “From there it is a

working process that rarely takes… long to achieve [a] final design.”

Julian’s 1991 experience involved more voices. Smith included every player and coach in the decision-making process, which made it more difficult to come to a consensus. So Julian enlisted Michael Jordan’s help. “He was not only our most famous player and the leading player of all time, but he has a good sense of fashion and he certainly loves Carolina,” Julian says. “Nobody was going to go against what Michael thought was right.”

Because low-quality color televisions of the time made Carolina blue appear gray on-screen, previous designers had made the uniform color more vibrant than traditional Carolina blue. Julian started by toning the color back down to its original hue.

He changed the fit of the uniforms and spent over a year attempting to invent a new fabric much like that of today’s uniforms—yet without the help of modern technology. “The old basketball uniforms were like sandpaper,” he says. “The stuff was so rough. That’s the reason everybody wore T-shirts underneath, and that was before we had Spandex.”

After producing multiple prototypes, developing 30 possibilities for the strip down the side of the uniform, and collaborating with Jordan, Julian produced a uniform that has since become iconic for Carolina.

The Tar Heels’ and the Blue Devils’ uniforms are different in everything from color to cut to style, but they both share one common, key element: timelessness. “[Since 1993] we have always maintained the heritage and ‘look’ of Duke, but with many subtle twists along the way,” says Lautenbach.

“While we have never completely changed the uniform and the iconic design,…we have created many versions of the Duke uniform.” This spring, NIKE developed what Lautenbach calls a “retro” uniform line that harkens back to Coach Krzyzewski’s successes in the early 1990s.

Julian also emphasizes how important it was to create a uniform that would communicate Carolina’s classiness while also transcending time. The argyle, which both he and Jordan loved, did the trick. “I chose it because it was cool. I chose it because it was signature. I chose it because it was timeless,” says Julian.

“I haven’t seen this month’s Vogue or this month’s Esquire, but I’ll bet you that if you’ll look at them, you’ll find something argyle in there just about every year because it’s a timeless design.”

Basketball uniforms don’t just stay on the court. Fans can buy replicas in university stores to show their team spirit at games or on the daily. “High schools and even colleges around the country order the ‘Duke’ uniform look through our Team Sales network,” says Lautenbach. “I think it looks great, but it also shows how teams all around the country want to emulate what Duke represents as a basketball program.”

For the players themselves, uniforms are key to fostering team spirit. The minute the jersey and

shorts come on, each player becomes a visual symbol of the university’s basketball heritage. “When one of our new uniform looks shows up at any of our teams’ locker rooms, the anecdotes I hear are about celebration, excitement, and anticipation,” says Lautenbach. “I also have seen coaches use it as motivation [to] represent to the kids that it is their duty to carry on what those before them achieved and that wearing an iconic uniform is a privilege, not a right.”

It’s easy to establish a rivalry in almost anything that involves both Duke and Carolina—and uniforms are no exception. On January 12, 2015, the NCAA rated the Tar Heels’ uniforms the most iconic. A video on the association’s website calls

them “the most original and coveted look in college hoops.” USA Today featured Duke’s getup in a 2013 photo gallery of “The boldest college uniforms.”

Fans from either school could spend ages arguing about which uniform is better or which one got more mentions in the media. But put the rivalry aside for a moment.

Both uniforms are well received by fans. Both are classy and timeless.

And both have distinct elements that bring players, coaches, and fans together around a proud reminder of their team’s heritage.

To put it succinctly, in Julian’s words, “The rivalry is fun, or else we wouldn’t do it….It’s not [like] one person is better than the other because of the color of their blue.”

(Re)Discovering Duke: 1000 Wins, 1000 Crazies

On January 25, 2015, Duke Basketball made history yet again. Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski became the first NCAA Division-I Men’s coach to reach 1000 career victories. The milestone occurred in a win over St. John’s. While the final score was 7768, the game was a nail-biter. Duke fans were on the edge of their seats throughout the game with Blue Devils only pulling ahead in the second half. It was a hard-fought 1000th win.

The game took place in the Mecca of Basketball, Madison Square Garden—the same location where Coach K broke legendary coach

in his own right, serving as head basketball coach, head football coach, athletic director and co-founder of the Atlantic Coast Conference during his 46 years at Duke. When the Blue Devils played their first game at the new stadium in 1940, Coach Cameron christened it with a 36-27 victory over Princeton. In turn, Duke christened it Cameron Indoor Stadium in 1972.

Bobby Knight’s record with his 903rd win in 2011. When asked about the 1000th win at MSG, Coach K replied, “Outside of Cameron, this is the best.” Outside of Cameron. Moral of the story: Nothing has, nor ever will, beat the magic of a victory in Cameron Indoor Stadium. And this comes from the guy who has had wins in almost every venue you can imagine,

including the Olympics.

What is it about Cameron Indoor Stadium that makes winning there so special? Anyone who has ever been to a game within Cameron’s gothic walls can attest to its indescribable energy. When it first opened in 1940, Chamber Secretary Pierson concluded, “There are no superlatives for it.” Seventy-five years later, this still seems to be Cameron’s best description: Words cannot capture it.

Cameron must be experienced.

Legend has it that Eddie Cameron and Wallace Wade sketched the design for the stadium on the cover of a book of matches. True or not, the story complements the school’s history, which is steeped in tobacco.

The stadium’s namesake is a legend

Hailing from Cameron Indoor Stadium are the infamous fans it contains—the Cameron Crazies. There are no fans as worthy of comparison as the Cameron Crazies. As beat writer Al Featherston said in 2007, “Duke’s crowd may or may not be the best student section…but it is the standard by which all others are measured.” Though the basketball program has grown since 1940, the student section is still made for only 1,200 students (although line monitors have been known to let in some 1,600 students for major games).

Undoubtedly, Duke could earn more income with a larger stadium, but as Coach K and many others maintain, the size of Cameron is part of its effect. “Duke emerged as the standard for college crowds simply by not changing Cameron Indoor Stadium,” Featherston explains. “The arena emerged in the 1990s as a last relic of a by-gone age when the student was at center-stage.”

While leaving the students at center-stage in Cameron is not without issues (NBC insisted on a time-delay when filming in Cameron in 1979 to censor the crowd), they’re also an undeniable part of the program’s success. North Carolina center Sean May said about Cameron, “It’s always tough to play there…because of the fans. They aren’t the most brutal; they’re just the most clever.”

Whether it’s the fans, the coach, the stadium or the game, you can’t beat Duke Basketball. This 2015 season is well on its way, and all I have to say is, “Let’s go Duke!”

Sports Food: An Anthropological Investigation

The lights are dim. Behind the swelling rumble of animated chatter, the announcer’s voice drones over the squeak of rubber on polished wood. The air is saturated with the smell of fried food and buffalo sauce.

It’s a familiar scene: game day at your favorite sports bar. It doesn’t matter which team you cheer for or where you live. Americans—especially college students—know what we eat on game day. It’s chicken wings, burgers, pizza, popcorn, and beer.

Spicy and greasy and salty and satisfying.

Why do we go to bars to watch sports? Why do we eat wings there? As someone who isn’t a particularly ardent sports fan or even a fan of bar food, I realized quickly that I’m the perfectly objective anthropologist to investigate these questions. What even is a buffalo wing? I wondered.

So like any good journalist, I started Googling to find out.

According to the USDA blog (who knew the USDA has a blog?), wings used to be an undesirable part of the chicken and were usually thrown into soups. But then in 1964, the owner of a bar in Buffalo, N.Y. tossed deepfried chicken wings in a cayenne butter sauce. And voila! People liked wings. Everyone except Patriots fans,

that is. New Englanders are 6 percent less likely to order wings than the national average, while N.Y. Giants fans are 24 percent more likely. If buffalo wings had been invented at a Chapel Hill bar, I daresay that Durhamites wouldn’t eat them, either.

But buffalo wings came from Buffalo, and it turns out they’re just as popular in Durham as they are in Chapel Hill. To fully investigate the bar-going, game-watching traditions at our own universities, on a game night I visited two iconic bars at either end of Tobacco Road: Top of the

Hill in Chapel Hill and Devine’s in Durham. The bartenders I spoke to were unhesitating in assuring me that wings were the most popular game day food, closely followed by burgers.

The bartender at Devine’s told me that patrons are definitely more likely to linger longer during games. While they don’t drink more, they do order more food than normal. I learned from the bartender at Top of the Hill that their business is significantly

better on game days, when beer is by far their best seller.

I was unsurprised by the information that I learned from the bartenders, but I did observe one thing that pleasantly surprised me. The groups of people gathered to watch the games seemed to be genuinely engaged in conversation with each other. I have no idea as to the content of their conversations, but what I saw quelled a cynical thought I had: that gathering to watch sports could be a quasi-social pseudo-activity, since it is at once sedentary and precludes sustained interpersonal engagement. But as I watched a man in a Seth Curry jersey bite into his loaded burger, I realized with a start that one could think of food in a parallel way. We gather to share food in the same way that we gather to share sports, and no one questions the social nature of the activity—even though it seems on the surface that the focus is what we’re eating or watching.

In the end, basketball—like food—is about being together. It’s about taking care of our bodies while we celebrate tradition, about feeling like a part of something bigger than ourselves. So toast to that next time you’re at a bar to watch a game. And if you’re a big fan of buffalo wings, be grateful that they came from Buffalo and not from the school down the road.

Spirit at all Tiers

On chilly winter afternoons when I pass by K-Ville, I often marvel at the dedication that drives students to huddle in their tents while temperatures dip below thirty. It’s precisely the same passion that draws thousands to storm Franklin Street after a victory, and grants coaches and players celebrity status on campus. The Cameron Crazies have earned their title; the basketball fever that dominates the campuses of both Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a force that leads hundreds of students on each campus to support, talk, and play basketball. While the varsity teams typically attract the most adora17

tion from the Crazies, the rivalry known across the country for its ferocity is still very much alive on alternative tiers of basketball, such as Junior Varsity, Club, Intramural, or Pick-up. Visit Wilson Gym or Fetzer Hall on any weeknight, and you’ll see hundreds of students enter in order to play, referee, or spectate basketball.

Both Duke and UNC-CH have strong Men and Women’s Club teams that regularly compete at the national level. Club teams meet for practices twice per week during the fall semester, during which the majority of the tournaments take place. “We spent three weekends in a row travelling [last semester],” says Delaney King, a sophomore member of Duke Women’s Club Basketball. Spring is the lighter of the two seasons, with the majority

of club players joining intramural teams in addition to their club involvement. “There’s a lot of crossover between the intramural and club teams,” Mike Forbes, Duke’s Director of Club Sports, says. The willingness of the club members to play both club and intramural is partly due to the social atmosphere that is created in each team.

King reiterates how welcoming she found the team when she joined as one of half a dozen freshmen. “Just having a senior connection right from the beginning was so valuable,” she says. Forbes confirms the value of the tight-knit group. “In joining a club, you instantly have 20-40 new friends,” he says. And you can guarantee that these new friends won’t only want to play basketball, but also talk basketball.

“Everyone on the team knows

what’s going on in the basketball world,” King says. “I felt the atmosphere and I wanted to be a part of that.”

The team camaraderie is equally strong at UNC-CH. A current junior, captain Szu-Aun Lim, says that the team has remained close since her freshman year, as all of the girls she entered with are still club members. “Most people stay for the full four years,” she says.

As captain, Lim’s responsibilities include scheduling tournaments, helping to organize travel logistics for the team, and maintaining a relationship with the Men’s Club team. “We often work the men’s tournaments to help with the clocks and scoring,” Lim says. “We help each other out.”

The relationship between teams is a little different when it comes to Duke. Lim says that the games played against Duke are always some of the most energetic, and are often extremely close. One of her favorite memories is a result of the rivalry. “There was one time that we beat Duke on a half court

shot,” she laughs. “We were pretty pumped about that.”

Intramural teams also contribute to the Duke-UNC rivalry.

Although the vast majority of intramural athletics takes place internally at each university, the season comes to a close with the Big Four tournament—a playoff between the top teams at Duke, UNC-CH, NC State, and Wake Forest University. “We’re hosting this year. We’ve just brought it back,” Justin Ford, the head of Intramural Sports at UNC-CH, says. “It was a big event about 15 years ago.” The Big Four includes both men’s and women’s teams, who play off against one another in a round robin style tournament.

Although some intramural teams desire a competitive level, many prefer something more recreational. According to Ford, UNC-CH has roughly 2,003 students competing in 230 intramural teams this year. Intramural basketball games are played six hours a night between Sunday and Thursday in order to fit in all

of the teams. Duke’s significantly smaller student body has produced 120 Intramural Basketball teams this semester, which are divided into three divisions based on players’ priorities: competitive, intermediate, or recreational. The teams include a wide variety of members who are often involved in other groups on campus. “We have fraternity teams, co-ed, grad students, undergrads, and faculty teams,” says TQ Humes, one of Duke’s Intramural coordinators.

“The top eight teams of each division play off, and they get a chance to play their championship game in Cameron.” Inherently, all games in Cameron attract a crowd, and the intramural championship is no different. According to Forbes, the fraternity league typically has the highest number of spectators.

In 2014, the league introduced a Greek cup and created a separate points system to determine the winner.

At UNC-CH, intramural basketball has recently been restructured.

Ford says that while UNC-CH for-

merly followed a similar structure to Duke’s intramural leagues, they were facing enrollments of approximately 90 teams in the recreational leagues, versus 10 teams in the competitive. The teams are now divided into two men’s leagues, two women’s leagues, and two co-ed leagues, which play off for a white or blue shirt. “They’re pretty much just split down the middle,” he says. White or blue, the intramural shirts are treasured for many years beyond college, and Ford receives a significant number of calls from alumni requesting replacements.

“Usually they’ve either had a child

they want to give a shirt to, their significant other has stolen their shirt, or they’ve worn it so much it’s fallen apart,” he says. One of his most unique requests came from a mother whose son had played IM all throughout college, asking Ford if he could send her the IM t-shirt logo so that they could put it on her son’s wedding cake.

Perhaps the best evidence of basketball fever is the loyalty of the players, coordinators, and directors. Lim intends to stay with the UNC-CH Women’s Club Basketball team until she graduates, and King feels similarly about the Duke

team. Ford has been working at UNC-CH in the Recreation Department since 2003, while Forbes has been working with Duke Athletics and Recreation since 1997.

Their love of sports, the team, the game, and the rivalry seems to possess a magnetizing power. As King puts it, “I think when you have a common sport with someone you kind of mesh together as people.” For many students, basketball is a core part of the Duke and UNC-CH experience—teams and tiers aside.

FREEZING FANS

The Duke vs. UNC-CH rivalry is legendary. In the weeks leading up to the big game, tension and excitement build exponentially. As March Madness rapidly approaches, the two iconic schools exchange smack talk. It is, arguably, the most exciting time of year for the Tobacco Road Rivals. Each school has its respective traditions—and at Duke, it’s tenting in Krzyzewskiville.

Nothing escalates the suspense like camping out for weeks for the best possible spot in Section 17 of Cameron Indoor Stadium. “Section 17 is the technical name,” Duke sophomore Carter Duncan says, “But it’s taken on a more colloquial and recognizable feel because of its significance.”

Rules

To secure a standing spot in the student section, students generally have to wait in line. For non-conference and unranked games, the wait is typically a day or so.

Bigger games, against other ACC or ranked teams, have a longer wait period of about a week. And then there’s the home Duke vs. UNC-CH game. Getting into the game is so competitive that waiting in line isn’t enough.

While the big game may not be until late February or early March, tenting begins in January immediately after students return from Winter Break. There are three tenting periods throughout the season. Approximately every 10 days, a new tenting period begins: black, blue, and white. During each of the first two levels, 70 tents may begin tenting. The white tenting level allows 30 tents to

set up in K-Ville. There can be no more than 100 tents set up, with no more than 12 people per tent. To ensure fairness, line monitors conduct tent checks to verify that the minimum number of people required to occupy the tent are present. If a tent fails the tent check, the group receives an absence. Each tent is allowed one absence per tenting period.

Exceptions

Surely, a non-Cameron Crazie might ask, these attendance rules don’t apply at all times? Indeed, there are exceptions. Immediately after a check, line monitors will not subject residents of K-Ville to another for at least the next hour. What about during basketball games? There aren’t any checks an hour before and after an away game, nor two hours before and after a home game. What about in the event of severe weather? Since basketball season is primarily during the coldest months of the year, if the temperature dips below 25 degrees Fahrenheit, two inches of snow falls, or there’s ice, students must evacuate K-Ville. And if there is a severe thunderstorm, students have to return to their normal housing.

Tenting has its pros and cons, but ultimately, it is uniquely Duke. “Unlike other universities that use a random lottery or ticket sales to determine which students are admitted to a sporting event,” the policy website says of the 29-year-old tradition, “Krzyzewskiville is proud of its first-come, first-served approach.”

LUCK OF THE DRAW

a Phase 2 ticket and Phase 3 has already begun, they lose their advantage and must go to the back of the line.

The UNC-CH process for obtaining tickets is less physically demanding and requires less time. The drawback? Students have less control over whether or not they will get the most requested student ticket on campus. Due to the high demand for Men’s Basketball tickets, UNC-CH implemented a lottery system. For non-conference games, students present their OneCard at Gate C to gain access. Games against other ACC teams require students to visit the student ticket page on GoHeels.com.

Exceptions

Rules

Once UNC-CH students submit a request, the result is out of their hands. Nobody knows the method by which students are chosen to receive a ticket. According to the distribution policy, “The order in which students request tickets has no bearing on who is randomly selected to receive tickets.” Registration is only open for two days and begins roughly 10 days before the game. If students win tickets, they automatically receive two. For the Duke game, though, they only get one. Students are notified of lottery results via email about five days before game day.

Phases are the stages at which students may enter the Dean Dome. Phase 1 enters an hour and a half before tip-off. This group has the best chance at getting a spot in the coveted “risers”—the student section directly behind the goal. Phase 2 enters an hour before, and Phase 3 thirty minutes before tip-off. However, if students have

The only way to guarantee oneself a ticket is to be a top-150 member of Carolina Fever, a student organization of UNC-CH’s biggest sports fans. For every Fever athletic event that a Fever member attends, she will collect points. In general, if Fever students register for the lottery, they will receive tickets to phase 1. Even so, for the Duke game, registered top-150 members only receive one ticket and seniors get priority.

Didn’t receive a ticket in the lottery? There are two ways to get one: the “turn it back” line and the standby line. The “turn it back” line results when students receive tickets and elect to return them. To get one of these tickets, students line up in the bottom of the Union. The standby line begins an hour and a half before the game.

Student tickets become void at tip-off and those seats are then given to these students.

Rivals to the core

Each school has its own way of admitting students into basketball games. Duke students appreciate the tenting tradition and UNC-CH students sign up for the lottery and pray that they get a ticket. If they don’t, they wait until senior year and hope that priority gets them into the game. Many students from each school prefer their school’s method of game admission. In the end, Duke and UNC-CH are rivals right down to their preferred method of obtaining a ticket.

The immensity of it swells, a burgeoning buzz of athletic intoxication, every nerve lighting the air on fire until the sweetness of a soft swish breaks a 15-foot silence. The screams are inhuman, the brutal chants inhumane.

One magnificent, monstrous being rises from the outstretched fingertips of several thousand to build and break down, to support and terrify, to determine the game without touching the ball.

This is our house. These are the fans of the greatest rivalry to grace college basketball.

Because both Duke University and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill maintain historically prestigious basketball programs, they birthed fans whom some call Crazies, others, The Fever.

Two households, both alike in dignity, exhibit a loyalty that transcends losses. These are fans by vocation, life-longers who are physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally all in it. Their babies will be dressed in their respective blues, the same colors in which they scream and cry and bleed.

carolina fever Carolina Fever is the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s largest student-run organization, supporting all 28 varsity athletic programs by providing an unfailingly loud crowd. For Tar Heel fans, the dual goal of any competition in the Dean Smith Center is a win and a hoarse voice. When Brice Johnson puts his palms to the rim and swings, the student section erupts, absolutely drunk on his dunk. You’d think the Carolina blue sky was falling. The entire stadium ignites to swallow any sound other than “TAR” dribble dribble “HEELS.” Risers rattle with feverish fans on their feet. The energy is meant to consume whatever air was left for the opposing team’s players to catch their breath.

“The fans are everything,” writes Carolina Fever Public Relations Chair Russell VanZomeren. “Our fans can change the outcome of any game at any time, and they know it.

We know it. We work to give Roy’s boys the best at-home atmosphere possible at each and every game.”

And they do. The Dean Dome’s crowd makes enough noise to pump up their players and punch the pulses of the Heels’ opponents.

The student section’s immense presence in Cameron constitutes a Sixth Man, another set of skills that shake up the competition. “They are not there to watch the game. They are there to be a part of the game,” says Coach K. Crazies are creative, clever, and admittedly cruel on occasion.

They can be brilliant in their brutality. And they are effective. Duke Men’s Basketball held the record for most consecutive undefeated games at home, with 41 wins in Cameron in a row spanning March 2012 to January 2015.

For smaller, nonconference games, students can usually claim tickets by showing their OneCard, but for conference games, students must enter an online lottery that determines whether they can get tickets to a game and, if so, at what phase they can take seats in the Dean Dome.

Awarded tickets range from Phase 1 to Phase 3, with the exception of the Duke game, which extends to five phases. Phase 1 files in the earliest, at an hour and a half prior to tip-off, though students will line up hours before their tickets allow. “For most of our fans the devotion is there long before we ever get to them,” writes VanZomeren. “It’s sort of a fasci-

nating dynamic where our fans are rewarded for attendance at sporting events by being allowed to attend more sporting events. It’d be kind of like rewarding someone for finishing their chocolate bar by giving them an even larger chocolate bar (Men’s Basketball being the largest of the chocolate bars in this metaphor).

welcome to k-ville Outside Cameron, a sea of several semesters’ engineering courses translated into sustainably structured tents houses students who want to attend the UNC-CH game more than they want to sleep in their own beds. Residents of K-Ville camped out in meticulously scheduled shifts from January 8 until February 11, their only grace

during game times and at temperatures below 25°F. Different colors code levels of commitment for seats: Black tents start earliest and require groups to have more members in their tent at all times, Blue tents start later with less people required at a time, and White tents have the shortest schedule but the least likelihood to get center court seats. Line Monitors call regular checks to make sure K-Ville is running by the rules.

This season saw the best response in years, with Black tent spots hitting capacity and spilling over to a wait list within the first week. Most importantly, the tenters serve as a reminder for the team in the weeks preceding the game that the students love them and will do their studying in sleeping bags for weeks to prove it. It’s the Crazies’ favorite public display of affection.

size matters Given the massive volume of the Dean Dome, the Tar Heels have the vocal energy and full-body cheers of 22,000 devoted fans behind the bench at every home game. The chorus of chaos in one of the largest arenas in college basketball gives the Heels the advantage of a vociferous venue. UNC-CH boasts a student body of over 29,000, assuring the Tar Heels a following that spreads, rightfully, like a fever. The nearly 300-student pep band blasts beats to set the tone for a high-decibel audience while higher-flying cheerleaders solicit even bigger bellows from the fans. Cheer coordination with 22,000 participants proves a challenge for Tar Heel fans, but when the band shouts “2-3-4” and the drummer breaks it down, the entire student section syncs to initiate

what VanZomeren says can only be described as rhythmic gyrating. Jazz hands and drum solos ensue, a sure precursor for victory culminating in “GO HEELS!” Any opposing team in the Dean Dome likely plays under the gaze of several thousand more pairs of eyes than they’re used to, surrounded by fans who are hungry for a Heels win and will make sure that they hear it.

The Tar Heels maintain a record of around 80% success at home, aided by the lung capacity of so many on-their-feet fans. The loudest game ever hosted at the Dean Dome was the 2005 nail-biter against (shockingly) Duke, when 22,125 fans amassed more noise at the Tar Heel 2-point win than Franklin Street on Halloween.

the intimidation game Cameron Crazies like to know their houseguests intimately, so they do their research, digging up dirt on every opposing player before he even thinks about stepping into Cameron. They will find out his mother’s maiden name, how many parking tickets he has, when and

where he lost his virginity, probably his social security number, and any evidence of embarrassing fodder possible to turn into posters and chants tailored to intimidate individuals. Though regulations have restricted the Crazies’ creativity to some extent (no more throwing Twinkies on the court), the student section has continued to prove that they’re willing to do their homework—and the extra credit.

The Crazies are a hospitable host, careful to warmly welcome the opposing team to hell. As announcers run through the roster, the student section waves, greeting each player by name in a this-shouldfeel-like-your-worst-nightmare unison. Fouls earn an entire crowd’s pointed fingers, a friendly reminder that “You can’t do that” and “You let the whoooole team down” on repeat. The student section bleachers somehow manage not to buckle under more than a thousand pairs of bouncing feet at every enemy possession. Because Cameron is a relatively small venue, opponents at the sidelines feel the hot breath

of the Crazies on their backs, their periphery occluded with the extended sleeves of blue body paint and quivering fingertips just inches from their shoulders.

“Our job is to help our team win, but if it’s necessary to rattle the other side’s cage and let them know whose house it is…we do what we have to do,” says Head Line Monitor Michael Marion.

In a live broadcast, NBC once preemptively requested a time-delay in case it was necessary to censor the student section.

are you fan enough?

In college basketball, games are decided by the determination both on and around the hardwood. The fans matter. They scream. They cry.

They sleep in tents for a month.

They show up and stand up during the whole game, jumping and gyrating for the players they love, making home sweet home court come alive with their loyalty. “THIS IS OUR HOUSE,” they say.

Study Abroad

“Mashi mooshki” means “that’s okay” or “no problem” in Moroccan Arabic. Though this was one of only a handful of phrases I learned while in Morocco, it came to define my experience last semester.

I first heard the phrase when I spilled some mint tea my first day of my Moroccan homestay during tea time, a 6:00 pm event expected to fill us up until dinner around 10:30 pm.

My host mom, with whom I spoke no common languages, looked at me with kindness and forgiveness in her eyes, and said, “Mashi mooshki,” “no problem.” Through just these two words, I immediately felt more at home, realizing that everything would be okay.

Last semester, I studied climate change as part of a comparative program, looking at the politics of food, water, and energy in Vietnam, Morocco, and Bolivia through guest lecturers, lessons with our traveling faculty, and site visits. Living out of our suitcases and moving from one location to another every week required discomfort and acceptance

of constant readjustments. But, in reassuring ourselves that we would be just fine, the 22 of us were able to handle any worries that came our way. When I visited Toro Toro, a national park in Bolivia, with three of my friends, our guide, Javier, drove us in an unmarked Jeep on narrow, windy mountain roads past two overturned buses. We trusted in a stranger’s expertise and chose to roll down the windows, blasting traditional Bolivian folk music instead of watching our lives teeter on the edge of the mountain. When 19 of us tested positive for typhoid, we made a field trip out of it—class was cancelled, we all visited the pharmacy, got medicine, and proceeded to make a meal of instant Ramen, Oreos, and nachos. When running in Morocco resulted in men following us on bikes, we improvised and ran on the Rabat beach, jumping in the Atlantic Ocean to cool off at sunset.

And when my host dad offered me “snake liquor,” or rice wine that has soaked a dead cobra for over five years, I was able to confidently say “that’s ok” with no fear of missing out. Instead, I was content with pushing my boundaries in other

ways, like biking to class in Can Tho, a Vietnamese city with no traffic rules for the thousands of motorcyclists. I traversed the Mekong River’s flooded banks and barely avoided incoming trucks to make it home every day.

In moments like these, I forgot how to worry, instead simply embracing the raw nature of truly human experiences. I saw the very real interdependency of life: the pollution from the people of El Alto, Bolivia, a rapidly growing urban center, streaming down to Lake Titicaca’s subsistence farmers; the intertwining alleys of Fes’ crowded alleys and its dependence on the Moroccan Atlas Mountains village two hours away for bottled drinking water, the same village where we watched the clearest stars on the roof of our hostel every night for a week; Hanoi, Vietnam, as an advanced urban center, intricately mixing the values of a progressive social scene and the politics of Communism, and the contrast with Mekong Delta rice farmers.

In finding humanity, my group found our own collective way to fit into the world around us, which changed form every few days (while changing nation and language every month). We built relationships on trains and boats and planes and especially buses, holding onto the bits of ourselves we love the most and openly allowing everyone else to shape us. Through all of it, we were able to look at each other and the people around us who shared their homes and lives with us, realizing: “We are all going to be okay.” Better yet, within humanity, there is always love in the world. Mashi mooshki.

No problem.

IN MEMORY OF DEAN SMITH

On February 7th, the basketball world lost an icon.

Yet beloved Tar Heel Coach Dean Smith’s impact reached far beyond the game of basketball. Smith was just as much a hero off the court as he was on it, which raises a difficult question for anyone writing about his legacy: What is the best way to remember him?

I could write about Smith’s influence on the Civil Rights movement in North Carolina. He not only desegregated UNC-CH athletics, but also played a significant role in desegregating local businesses and was a longtime supporter of gay rights. Yet Coach Smith would be embarrassed by the attention he has received in recent weeks for all of the causes that he supported.

He was famously introverted—never seeking out the spotlight—but he also believed in doing the right thing.

Coach Smith didn’t recruit Charlie Scott for the publicity, and he certainly wouldn’t want it now, even if he should be lauded for it.

I could also write about Coach Smith’s impact on the “Carolina Family” he created. He remembered the name of every player, every assistant, even every student manager to don Carolina Blue during his legendary run in Chapel Hill. But his mentorship didn’t end at graduation. Coach Smith would send personalized notes to many of his former players and assistants, just to catch up. He looked over the finances of Tar Heels in the pros, and had a tremendous impact in landing his assistants their own head coaching jobs. I could write about all the lives Coach Smith touched, but that is best left those who can provide firsthand accounts of his kindness and light. Retelling those stories after hearing them on ESPN’s tribute to Coach Smith just wouldn’t do them justice.

In the end, I’m not qualified to write about Coach Smith’s impact off the court. Instead, I’ll reflect on his basketball legacy. Even that is a slippery slope, however.

I was only two years old when he coached his last game, and I’m sure he would attribute his success to his player’s effort and talent (in that order). Still, writing about Dean Smith the basketball coach, for me, is a much easier task than writing about Dean Smith the man. I can measure a sports legacy with statistics.

Coach Smith didn’t necessarily build the Tar Heel program. They won just as many National Champion-

ships (two) before him as they won with him. But the City College of New York Beavers were once a national powerhouse, too. Coach Smith is famous in Chapel Hill not for building the team, but for maintaining it. For 37 years, he kept the Heels amongst the upper echelon of college hoops. Even if they weren’t in contention for the title, they never had an off year, winning at least 20 games 29 times in 30 seasons. Throughout a run that saw the likes of Loyola Chicago, Texas Western (now Texas El-Paso), Jacksonville, and Houston all rise to prominence, Coach Smith kept the Tar Heels from fading into basketball oblivion. He kept the program relevant.

Upon his retirement, Dean Smith was the winningest coach in Division-I Men’s history. During his tenure, he developed so many innovations that it is nearly impossible today to find a coach who hasn’t borrowed from his playbook. He was the first to double team off the pick-and-roll and the creator of Carolina’s patented Secondary Break offense. When asked about his influence on the game, however, his former players don’t point to the X’s and O’s, but rather to something much simpler. Coach Smith was the first to encourage players who scored a basket to point at the player who passed them the ball. His ultimate basketball legacy is a simple gesture recognizing a teammate’s unselfishness. Dean Smith won 879 basketball games, 13 ACC tournaments, and two National Titles, but his greatest victories can never be counted.

Rest in peace, Coach Smith.

How to Be a Diehard

It’s quite a feat to be deserving of the “Tar Heel” or “Blue Devil” title. From tenting in K-Ville to screaming “I’m a Tar Heel Born and Bred” in the Smith Center, fans of both shades of blue have trademarked countless traditions. You’d be hard-pressed to find groups more devoted to their respective teams. So what does it take to be a Blue Devil or a Tar Heel? What does it mean to be diehard?

1 Get Ridiculously Hyped Up With School Spirit

This means that all of your energy is funneled into adoring your school. No one says a word against UNCCH or Duke without you going into full attack mode.

You exude enthusiasm for your school’s mascot. You are the student incarnation of a cheerleader, or maybe you are a cheerleader—either works.

2 Dress Like This

Wear all blue. Paint yourself from head to toe.

Whatever you choose, DON’T YOU DARE WEAR THE OPPOSITE BLUE. Insane costumes are encouraged; you aspire to get on ESPN by merit of your outfit.

In fact, the more ostentatious or outrageous your ensemble, the better.

3 Be Willing to Make Sacrifices

Tenting in K-Ville and waiting in line for hours at the Dean Dome are perfect examples of dedication. You

4 Know the Songs and Chants

This builds school spirit. When you go to games, know every song the band plays and all the actions or chants the fans perform for each play on the court.

After all, Duke trademarked the “Airball” chant, and Tar Heels and Blue Devils alike are known for being loud and proud. So be loud—even obnoxious—because the fans are undeniably a force to be reckoned with.

Dance and jump until your legs hurt, and be ready to make some noise!

5 Accept Your Blue Blood and Embrace the Crazy It doesn’t matter which “blue” you belong to or what crazy things you put your body through before and during games, because a diehard fan loves basketball.

Cameron Crazies and Tar Heels know they’re wild, and they wouldn’t have it any other way!

In the first coaches poll of the season on January 22, five wrestlers were ranked among the top 32 in their respective weight classes, led

by Conner Hartmann coming in at No. 7. At the Appalachian State Open in late January, three Blue Devils captured titles in their respective weight classes: Trey Adamson, Connor Bass, and Mitch Finesilver.

The saber squad paced the Devils with an overall 4-1 record, and Sophomore Christopher Monti posted an 11-1 individual outing.

January 25 was also an exciting day for another Duke team.

Women’s basketball secured a 74-67 victory at archrival UNC-CH in overtime. Duke senior Elizabeth Williams had an incredible performance, scoring 33 points on 14-of-

25 shooting, beating the career-high 28 points she set against UNC-CH the year before.

The Duke men’s basketball team has had some highs and lows this season. Jahlil Okafor has been a star player, one of the best in the nation with 18.7 PPG, 9.4 RPG, and an astounding 66.2% shooting percentage. The Devils have notched some impressive wins, notably in non-conference games against Wisconsin on December 3 and Louisville on January 17. However, with the dismissal of guard Rasheed Sulaimon and some questionable defense, this team has work to do before it lives up to its Final Four potential.

On January 24, the seventh-ranked UNC-CH Men’s tennis team earned a hardfought win over then No. 38 Virginia Tech. With the win, the Tar Heels improved to 6-0 and clinched a spot at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Chicago from February 13-16. Sophomore Jack Murray stood out in particular, securing his own singles win and providing an excellent ace match-winner in doubles to give UNC-CH the single double’s point for the afternoon.

At the fencing Philadelphia invitational, the Tar Heel men’s and women’s teams celebrated a special milestone with long-time coach Ron Miller. The women’s team went 3-2, allowing Miller to notch his 1,400th win as head coach of the UNC-CH program for 48 years.

The UNC-CH Men’s Basketball team has been performing strongly thus far, ranked No. 12 nationally as of February 8. A home win against Syracuse on the January 26 was highlighted by Marcus Paige’s excellent performance. Paige posted 22 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists, and 0 turnovers. The Heels have suffered setbacks with back-to-back losses against Louisville and Virginia, games that could have established UNC-CH’s position as a dominant force in the ACC. In their historic 100th meeting, the UNC-CH women’s basketball team defeated the NC State Wolfpack in Raleigh with a 67-63 comeback victory on January 22.

The UNC-CH women’s swimming team was ranked No. 5 as of January 29 after posting a win over then No. 6 Virginia. The win ended a 7-year losing streak against the Cavaliers, securing enough points from second and third place finishes despite only winning seven events to Virginia’s nine. The team meet came down to a freestyle relay event where UNC-CH posted the winning time to break the 150-point win barrier.

At this point in the winter sports season, Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill are tied in direct competition 1-1, with Duke women’s basketball winning at Chapel Hill and UNCCH notching men’s and women’s victories over Duke in swimming & diving at Chapel Hill.

Practicing three times a week and performing at every home football and basketball game, the Devils also get a few perks. “One of my proudest moments was thinking up the Devil’s headband slogan for a game last year,” Boling says. “He even put my initials on it!” Of course, Boling’s greatest pride stems from supporting Duke Athletics. “Being able to put on the uniform,” she says, “and cheer for Duke is such an amazing feeling.”

By Frank Jiang After Black tenting his freshman year, Duke senior OREN BUKSPAN decided to apply to be a Line Monitor. Now in his final year, he is a Head Line Monitor whose role entails “balancing the needs of the many groups involved with Duke Basketball and validating the time and effort students put into being out in K-Ville.” Though the work is hard, Bukspan needs only recount his own years cheering in Cameron Indoor to justify his effort. “My favorite Duke Basketball memories were formed here on campus, including Ryan Kelly’s 36-point masterpiece and Austin Rivers’ buzzer beater,” he says. To Bukspan, being a Head Line Monitor means letting others, present and future, share in those same experiences. “The best thing about being a Line Monitor,” he explains, “is the ability to help continue one of the great Duke traditions.”

By Frank Jiang UNC-CH junior MELISSA SWOPE vowed to move on from marching band after high school.

However, UNC-CH’s mellophone section leader and the pep band community drew her in. Now, the friendship and solidarity that the pep band offers are some of her favorite things about UNC-CH. The Arts feature prominently in Swope’s life. She makes and sells her own ceramics (specializing in piggy banks), dances as part of Blank Canvas, and is interning this semester at DPAC. In fact, it was her artistic entrepreneurship that drew this self-described ambivert to the Business School. “I’m a Business major because of my art,” Swope says. “I would really encourage other artists to get involved in business. It’s a great way to keep art in your life.”

Few non-athletes get to energize the crowd at a game like UNC-CH junior BOBBY KAWECKI does. By playing in the basketball, football, and Olympic sport pep bands, Kawecki instigates excitement and energy at games. The History and Political Science major says he “loves contributing to the overall atmosphere.” Though at the event itself he will likely be playing the trumpet, Kawecki is also sometimes responsible for the entire arrangement.

The talented musician adapts and composes songs such as “Uptown Funk” for the bands, which can have up to 250 individual musicians. When he’s not making creative arrangements, Kawecki writes for “The Hill” and works as an Office Assistant in Ram Village.
