pre-game > HOPE for the homeless

he homeless community of Chapel Hill has found a new voice. “Talking Sidewalks: Voices of Poverty and Homelessness in Chapel Hill,” is a new magazine almost completely staffed by homeless men and women in the area. Debuting on Dec. 3., “Talking Sidewalks” will give the homeless a way to express themselves artistically while shedding light on the issues facing the homeless community at-large. ponsored by the UNC-Chapel Hill Campus Y, the Hunger and Homeless Outreach Program, HOPE, is making the operation possible. Co-chairs Megan Strickland and Maggie West direct the project.

Each week, a group of HOPE volunteers meets at the homeless shelter to plan the layout of the magazine and organize publicity for its release date.

create original pieces for the magazine.

“Talking Sidewalks” will include fiction, nonfiction, poetry, art and photography submitted by homeless people.

“The majority of their articles are centered around what they already know, their own lives and experiences, West said. “But we help them find new and creative ways to do this.”

Many of the homeless men and women working on the magazine write editorial pieces addressing hardships and negative stereotypes. Topics range from homeless-shelter systems to the glances they get on the street.

“We all have individual stories and individual reasons for being out here, and the magazine gives us an outlet to tell our stories,” said Ron Moore, a homeless man working with the magazine.

“I hope that by reading the magazine people can understand more about us and how we got to where we are.”

Strickland and West said that in the spring of last year, they made a documentary that inspired them to start the magazine. They said their work on the film showed them how many homeless individuals want to expose common misconceptions about them and to prove they have meaningful insights themselves.

Strickland said the magazine focuses on giving the contributors a sense of pride in their work and a supportive community that will encourage them to accomplish other goals in their lives.

In the future, the Campus Y hopes the magazine will be run primarily by homeless individuals in Chapel Hill. The HOPE committee strongly believes that this goal will be achieved after witnessing the developing leadership and initiative of the men and women involved in the project.

“The whole thing is about giving them the feeling they are a part of something,” Strickland said, “and it’s based on building relationships within the homeless community, which in turn has inspired them and given them the momentum they need in their lives.”

uick turns, savvy shimmies and rhythmic eight-count steps, all synonymous with Salsa dancing, are signatures of Sabrosura, Duke’s Latin dance group.

The group performs regularly at a variety of campus events including the Springternational Festival and the Homecoming ‘08 President’s Ball. where they performed a hip hop-infused salsa piece.

Sabrosura specializes in an array of dance forms, including tango, flamenco and samba. But the group’s primary dance form is Rueda de Casino, a type of salsa that originated in Cuba.

Lillie Carroll, a first-year Duke student from Miami, Fla. is well versed in tap, ballet and jazz but said she thinks salsa dancing is interesting because it’s fast-paced and requires a partner.

“Salsa was challenging because you don’t always know what’s coming next, but it’s also fun because it’s more of an exchange instead of you doing a dance on your own.”

First-year Betty Collada from Miami, Florida, also spoke of the unique dynamic. “You need to have chemistry and a sensual type of connection with your partner in salsa dancing,” she said.

This year, the troupe started a tradition called Duke Fiesta, an informal Latin dance party hosted the last Friday of each month.

Leah Benjamin, a senior from Santiago, Chile, said in an e-mail that the group has been a “home away from home,” and a great way for her to stay

connected to the Latino community.

“I share life with people who love to dance, greet each other with a kiss on the cheek and, of course, speak Spanglish.”

Sambrosura co-director Rima Sestokas, a senior at Duke, said wants to offer the resources for students to improve their dancing in an environment where learning can thrive.

“We aim to create a friendly organization where members can share their passion for Latin dance, learn from each other and grow as dancers,” Sestokas wrote in an e-mail.

At the group’s annual event, “Salsa on the Steps,” Sabrosura gives dance lessons on the steps of the Duke Chapel. Sabrosura members dance on the steps while students copied their steps below. The group organizes the event each year to emphasize salsa’s ability to bring people together.

Those new to salsa dancing have the choice of learning easy, medium or hard moves at three different stations in front of the chapel.

XiaoHui “X” Wang, a Duke first-year student from Houston, Texas said that attending the event was a good way to familiarize himself with Latin dance.

“I love dancing, but I’m very inexperienced,” Wang said.

Sabrosura’s annual Spring Showcase, featuring student-choreographed dance pieces will be on April 10.

The Third Wheel Why Duke professor and UNC dad Mike Munger took on McCrory, Perdue for governor as libertarian.

It took 107,000 signatures and a quarter of a million dollars to even get Mike Munger’s name on the ballot.

Chairman of the political science department at Duke University, Mike Munger, Ph.D, ran for the N.C. governor’s seat as the third-party Libertarian candidate in the 2008 election. His fellow contenders were Democratic candidate Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue and Republican candidate, seven-term Charlotte mayor Pat McCrory.

N.C. state law prohibited current Gov. Mike Easley, a Democrat, from running for a third term.

And even though Munger works for Duke, he has a number of ties to UNC-Chapel Hill, the oldest public university in the United States. From 1990 to 1997Munger taught political science at UNC-CH (Chapel Hill, 1990-7). At UNC, he served as Director of the Master of Public Administration Program, training city and county managers.

Prior to joining the Libertarian Party within the last decade, Munger had been a Republican.

For a third-party candidate to get on the ballot in a gubernatorial election, he/she must collect signatures equalling at least two percent of the votes cast in the previous gubernatorial election, according to N.C. state law.

Barbara Howe, Munger’s campaign manager and state chair of the N.C. Libertarian Party, said North Carolina’s ballot access laws are the third most restrictive in the country.

“It’s so important to the party as a whole because his race is a ballot-access race,” Howe said.

And many people aren’t even sure what the Munger said t has found many people are unsure of what Libertarians stand for.

Kevin Munger said he finds that college students exhibit a greater interest in politics than the general public, but many students still remain unaware of his father’s candidacy and the Libertarian platform.

“The majority of kids don’t really know that there is a third option,” he said.

Since Republicans and Democrats are the two dominant parties in the United States, many people are unfamiliar with the Libertarian platform.

“Republicans tend to be very active in getting government out of financial matters. Democrats tend to be more engaged in keeping the government out of your personal life….Libertarians are frequently called pro-choice on everything. We believe you should have your personal life and your economic life — both decisions should be in your hands, not the hands of govern-

Munger was required to collect 70,000 signatures for the election this year; however, he actually obtained about 107,000 signatures because many of the signatures were invalidated by the state.

He also spent a quarter million dollars on the petition process, leaving very limited funding for his campaign.

“I’m very frustrated,” Munger said. “The fact is that after spending a quarter of a million dollars, we’re not going to be able to run basically any ads.”

The extensive time and monetary commitments required for third party candidates to appear on the ballot serve as a strong disadvantage, Munger said.

“The General Assembly wants to ensure that third parties, even if they get on [the ballot], have no chance of running a real campaign,” Munger said.

North Carolina’s ballot access restrictions appear especially stringent in comparison to those of other states.

Munger said that even a conservative state like South Carolina only requires 10,000 signatures.

North Carolina’s Libertarian and Green Parties have filed a lawsuit to end the petition requirement. As of press time, they’ve already spent $40,000 in lawyers’ fees.

Calling on his campaigning experience, Munger has been serving as an expert witness in the courtroom.

Munger said it has been difficult to get publicity. UNC-TV invited Munger to participate in its debate, but he was excluded from the gubernatorial debates held by November 2008 • RIVAL MAGAZINE ##

ABC-affiliate WTVD and CBS-affiliate WRAL. WRAL requires that candidates have at least 10 percent of the popular vote in the polls at the time of the debate.

Munger has voiced harsh criticisms of both his opponents, Lt. Gov. Democrat Beverly Perdue, and Republican Pat McCrory, seven-time mayor of Charlotte.

“I think the other choices are so bad that the people of North Carolina are not being well-served,” Munger said.

a lottery bill as an example of her failure to act in North Carolinians’ interests and her ineffectual leadership over a Senate that engages in underhanded political dealings.

The lottery bill was passed only after opponents absented themselves while the vote took place.

“Everything that’s wrong with North Carolina, [Perdue’s] had a hand in, and whenever people have tried to make change for the better, she’s participated in blocking it,” Munger said.

“It’s not unfair to say that that vote was rigged — I don’t think that word is too strong,” Munger said.

Munger believes that Perdue has shown poor leadership over a corrupt legislature.

Last year, former Speaker of the House Jim

Black pleaded guilty to corruption charges.

“There’s an atmosphere of secrecy and corruption in the Senate that is directly [Perdue’s] fault. It’s not only her fault, but she could have changed it and didn’t,” Munger said.

Munger also did not mince words when discussing his second opponent, McCrory.

Munger accused McCrory of luring large corporations to Charlotte at the expense of small businesses. Rather than aiding local businesses that were struggling, Munger said that McCrory invested money into bringing large businesses to Charlotte.

Munger refers to this practice as “corporate welfare” and said that politicians often opt to attract large businesses to their communities because politicians can easily claim credit for them. “[McCrory] hasn’t improved the employment situation in Charlotte, but he has attracted a couple of high-visibility, large corporations just by giving them tax payers’

In available election data (elections since 1992), Libertarians running for governor in North Carolina have only garnered about 1 percent of the vote. money. That’s not the way to attract business. That’s just prostitution. He’s engaged in the worst kind of economic prostitution, as I see it,” Munger said.

Munger also criticized Charlotte’s light rail system, the construction of which McCrory pushed for as mayor.

“It was enormously expensive [and] hasn’t done much to reduce congestion,” Munger said.

To construct the rail system, Charlotte’s city government bought land, much of which belonged to poor neighborhoods, at prices significantly lower than their actual market value, Munger added.

Since running for governor on the Libertarian platform, Munger has found that “politics is run in such a way to benefit the rich and powerful.”

“I have to say that as a political science professor, I had no idea that the level of corruption and exclusion in this state was so high,” Munger said.

Although he is a Libertarian, Munger said that if elected governor, he is prepared to work with both Democrats and Republicans. During the time he has spent at Duke, Munger has developed a spirit of compromise and a commitment to get things accomplished, which would prove imperative as governor.

“I’m in my third term as chair of Duke’s Political Science Department and I’m a Libertarian. I’m used to working with people of different political persuasions,” Munger said.

“I think the faculty at Duke trust me as someone who tries to run things fairly. I recognize that I can’t do things on my own and I have to compromise and work together with people.”

Overall, Munger seeks to limit government involvement. In his view, North Carolina state government has long abused its power.

“I believe that there is a place for government in the lives of the citizens of North Carolina, but it’s a much smaller place than it has now,” he said. “There’s a set of activities that I think are legitimate and we’ve gone far outside those boundaries.”

he pill, the patch, the ring, the shot — the list continues. More women than ever are using birth control to regulate “the curse,” reduce the cramps, clear up the zits and repress the eggs.

Many women at UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke first find a form of birth control in college, and the routines they set around their method of choice can continue long after graduation. The current UNC-CH system for providing birth control has been in place for more than 25 years, leading some to believe the system no longer serves its original purpose.

At UNC-CH, newcomers to birth control have to make an appointment with a Carolina Health Education Counselor for Sexuality before getting a prescription through campus health services.

CHECS counselor Patrice White, one of the four members of the all-female staff, said the counseling session is intended to be more than just another hoop to jump through.

“I wish more people would know it’s for your own benefit. This appointment can seem like waste of time, but we’re really here to help you,” Wright said.

“Getting on birth control is so much more than just taking a pill or applying a patch, and we want to make sure you have that information,” Wright added. “There are ways to make it quick and simple.”

Although they suggest that clients reserve at least 45 minutes for this free consultation, it’s possible to go through the process in 20 minutes or less, especially if women are well informed and already know the method of birth control they want to use.

Wright said she makes it a point not to ask about the motives behind a woman’s desire to use birth control. But she said she has no problem discussing them should someone bring more personal issues or questions to the table.

“We are here to answer any questions that you have about birth control,” Wright said. “Maybe there are some misconceptions you’ve heard about. Maybe there’s some things you’re not sure of, but any in case, when you’re with your provider you don’t get a lot of time to ask those questions.”

And although the CHECS counselors are also responsible for HIV testing, campus outreach and various other programs relating to sexuality, Wright said the majority of the appointments made with this sector of Counseling and Wellness are for birth control consultations. On average, Wright said she sees at least 15 women per week.

UNC sophomore Katie Cox said campus health physicians and pharmacists provided her with good information although she already knew what method of birth control she wanted.

“I was on the pill throughout high school and junior high for other reasons apart from birth control,” Cox said. Cox was interested

in switching to the ring before coming to college because she felt it would be a more compatible option for her hectic schedule.

However, her health care provider at home was reluctant to write Cox’s prescription for the ring.

Since Cox had been on birth control before, she was able to bypass the CHECS counseling session and go directly to a campus health physician. While at an appointment for a gynecological exam, Cox started a conversation about the ring with her physician. “She was happy to talk to me about it and she agreed that for my lifestyle and my schedule it would be a really good option

was changing forms of birth control. I think in that sense extra guidance is useful, but I personally don’t advocate creating extra barriers,” Cox said. “I think it’s a little intrusive to a woman’s privacy.”

Women interested in receiving birth control at Duke are not required to go through any intermediary steps before seeing a physician according to Lindsey Bickers Bock, a Health Education Specialist at Duke, coordinator of the Healthy Devils peer education program and advisor for Duke Educational Leaders in Sexual Health or DELISH. “Students don’t have to go through ‘Healthy Devils’ to get birth control,” Bickers Bock said, “If they knew they wanted a specific type of birth control we would encourage them to make an appointment at the Student Health Center.” Bickers Bock said that students are welcome to schedule a free appointment with her to discuss birth control options, but it is not a requirement.

As a former UNC CHECS counselor herself, Bickers Bock has an interesting perspective on the differences between UNC and Duke’s systems of providing birth control.

“We don’t have the same structure here.

There’s not the required step of going through a health education session,” Bickers Bock said, adding that campus health physicians sometimes refer students to her

for me, so she went ahead and prescribed it,” Cox said.

Cox said she had a few questions about the ring but said that the campus health pharmacists answered them all during the routine consultation upon picking up her prescription.

“I found that both my physician and pharmacist were really friendly and non judgmental and explained the whole process to me,” Cox said.

Though Cox was not required to see a CHECS counselor she feels the service she received from her physician and pharmacist was more than adequate. “I found it really useful to have someone sit down and explain this stuff to me especially since I

because they were not ready to choose a birth control method during their appointments. However, Bickers Bock said she only sees a “handful” of students a week about birth control methods.

Rachel Wolf, a senior public policy major and DELISH member at Duke, said she feels most women are capable of making a decision about birth control on their own.

“At Duke we have that option where people can schedule an appointment to talk to Lindsey at student health and talk about the various options,” Wolf said. “But at the same time, I don’t think it should be something that is required of women, especially something like birth control that a woman may not feel comfortable talking about.”

Wolf said she thinks that requiring women to seek counseling about birth control may have some “unintended consequences” like deterring women from getting birth control if they do not feel comfortable with or have time for the session.

Wolf said that she doesn’t worry that women at Duke are not being informed because they go straight to campus health for their prescriptions.

seling session doesn’t mean they’re not talking about it,” Wolf said. “To get a prescription you have to get someone to write out that prescription. Either the nurse or the doctor makes sure you don’t have any questions.”

Having worked at both UNC and Duke, Bickers Bock said that she doesn’t feel that one system for providing birth control is better than the other.

“I think it probably depends on exactly which student you’re talking about,” Bickers Bock said. “My experience of doing the counseling is that even when people thought it wasn’t going to be helpful it was more useful than they expected. But certainly I would recognize at the same time that it is one more thing that people have to schedule and so if people are pretty well informed it does potentially create a little bit of a barrier.”

Initiating the process of getting birth control is the hardest part, Bickers Bock said.

“The bigger step is for people, whether they’re at UNC or Duke, is to make the decision to call the student health center,” Bock said.

Though Bickers Bock admits she has nothing but her personal experience as evidence, she believes that both systems are equally effective.

FUNNY Duke’s Tim Ball and UNC’s Mary Sasson took some Tobacco Road inspired comedy across the country to compete as two of the four finalists at the National College Comedy Competition in Aspen, Colo. As part of Aspen’s Rooftop Comedy Festival, the competition was an open forum for college class clowns from all around the nation. Ball and Sasson made their way to the competition after advancing through online voting polls on the RoofTop Comedy website.

Tim Ball, a wild card participant fresh from college graduation, ended up walking away from the competition a first place winner. The Texas native blew crowds away with his hilarious act about everyday student experiences like learning Spanish as well as the various styles of typing. x Mary Sasson also wowed the audience.

The Pittsburgh native spoke about her large

family while still making time to poke fun at rappers and talk candidly about her parents’ separation, bringing on big laughs in between with her spontaneous shout-outs.

I spoke with Mary, a current senior at Chapel Hill, recently about her comedic experiences and tried to pick her brain a little bit.

How did you hear about the comedy competition? I saw a flyer for the competition when I auditioned to open for Lewis Black And how did the audition go? I ended up getting it and opened for him What was Lewis Black like? He was very quiet, not really in a shy way, but he just kept to himself. There were some other people from the Daily Show there and he was joking around with them, but to me he

just said `good job.’

Other than Lewis Black of course, who’s your favorite stand-up comedian?

I’ve been into Chris Rock recently.

Is there a particular bit by him that you like?

He does this act about the Columbine shooters and how they only had like four friends and…wow it sounds horrible that this is my favorite, but it’s a really funny act, you’d have to hear it to understand.

You’ve been performing for CHiPs since last semester, but what would consider your first ever comedic performance?

Probably being a class clown in elementary school, much to the chagrin of all my

The regionals for the Rooftop competition were fun. They were at DSI and it was standing room only. I really left knowing that I had done the best that I could’ve done.

Do you have any pre-act rituals that you do for good luck?

As for rituals I just try to be as positive as possible and remind myself that I’ve done this before, because a lack of confidence can kill a really good set of jokes.

Do you have any joke, anecdote that you always know can get a response from the audience?

Yes, A lot of inspiration comes from my family because they’re definitely a creepy group. I also talk about observations from life that I find ironic and `what if?’ situations that I always seem to think up and try out on my friends. They usually think I’m crazy.

Many stand-up comedians have gone on to start up TV shows, if you were to create a sitcom, what would the plotline be?

It could be fun to do a sitcom based on my family, but with so many characters it would be hard, and I would be scared that their characters would be pigeonholed.

Okay, now a random question…If you could have dinner with any three people from the past, who would they be? And where would you eat?

Julius Caesar because I’m fascinated with him… Eleanor Roosevelt would be good and… Jesus because if could have anyone, you might as well invia Jesus, you know, put a good word in. And I guess maybe Red Lobster?

How did you find out you were a Rooftop finalist? Who did you tell first?

I found out I was a finalists because the rooftop people emailed me; it was a really surreal/exciting moment. I think I called my Mom and then texted a bunch of people. I felt like I called in a lot of favors for people to vote so much, so I really wanted to seem appreciative.

Down Lemur Lane, a gravel road almost too narrow for cars to pass, nestled on nearly 80 acres in the Duke Forest, is the world’s largest sanctuary for rare and endangered prosimians — a group of primates that includes lemurs and bushbabies.

ach year, between 13,000 and 15,000 people from around the world visit the Duke Lemur Center to see the lemurs up close and personal.

Established in 1966, the center is home to 19 species of prosimian, including several of Madagascar’s most endangered species of lemur.

Slash-and-burn agriculture has destroyed much of Madagascar’s tropical forests, so lemurs have been pushed out toward the costal areas of the island to find a habitat.

Duke’s colony consists of 233 lemurs and 21 other prosimians that are studied by researchers and college students from all across the nation and the world.

“We are a center for research, a center for education and a center for conservation,” said Andrew Garfunkel, the tour coordinator for the center. “If any of those have to take priority it is probably conservation, but only in the sense that the ultimate goal of both research and education is to lead us to a place where we engage in more effective conservation.”

To help with population conservation and

restoration, the center has a captive-breeding program to help increase the population of the animals. Many other zoos and facilities around the world have similar breeding systems.

To help the center guarantee each lemur a healthy and prosperous life full of monkey chow and mango leaves, lemur enthusiasts can participate in the center’s lemur adoption program, which costs about $50 a year.

“Parents” receive a biography and picture of the lemur, information on its species, a certificate of adoption and a tour pass.

The center also welcomes volunteers.

Duke students can apply for a work-study program and students at UNC-CH can apply for internships through the center.

But if you want to schedule a tour, Garfunkel said to make sure to call the center for directions. Lemur Lane isn’t the easiest road to spot.

“There are people who literally live across the street who don’t know we’re here,” he said.

Three women return to campus after the Olympics

ou’ve trained most of your life and made it to the ultimate test of your athletic abilities — competing in the Olympics. What’s next?

For Michael Phelps, it was vacationing in the Algarve in southern Portugal.

Other athletes had a decidedly less glamorous transition.

After Blue Devil Becca Ward and Tar Heels Katelyn Falgowski and Tobin Heath became accustomed to living in the Beijing Olympic village with world-renowned athletes and competing on international television, they were forced to return to their collegiate student bodies and start fall classes.

Transitioning from a summer job or internship back to a full semester is difficult enough for most college students. But going from representing one’s country in front of the entire world to being responsible for a load of courses and leading a collegiate athletic team in a matter of days requires an uncommon maturity.

“Having to be back in the college atmosphere at first was a little tough,” Falgowski

said. ”Being back under the supervision of your coaching staff and going back to school again was a little different at first, but my teammates were great and welcomed me back home and I think they absolutely helped me with my adjustment.”

In the bronze medal match against Russia’s Sofiya Velikaia, Ward was behind by 6-1 before coming back and tying at 14-14. She also took the bronze medal for team sabre by beating France.

Neither Ward, Falgowski nor Heath were strangers to international competition before becoming legal adults. As teenagers, Ward won the 2006 World Championship in women’s Sabre, Falgowski helped lead the USA Women’s Junior Pan American Championship Team to a second place finish and Heath was a member of the U.S. U-17 Women’s National Team in 2004 and 2005 in addition to being on the U.S. U-16 Girl’s National Team in 2003 and 2004.

Falgowski said. “We stuck together and I think that’s really what helped our community and boosted our confidence.”

The field hockey team didn’t win a medal in Beijing but Falgowski said she understands why people keep with the endless cycle of Olympic training and hopes to travel to London in 2012.

“Once you get a taste of the Olympics and the world space you just don’t want to leave it,” Falgowski said. “You want to keep coming back for more and even if you end up on top you still want to go back for more and try again.”

(Like her fellow Tar Heel, Heath also got to see the Great Wall of China before the tournament.) The team beat Brazil in overtime to win the gold medal. Heath played 67 of 90 minutes in a scoreless regulation that ended 1-0 after an additional 30 minutes of overtime.

Duke students won’t have the opportunity to cheer Ward in a Duke women’s fencing match until the season officially begins in

January, but an unexpected shout-out at her freshmen convocation drew a lot of attention from unknowing peers when President Richard Brodhead referred to her in his Olympic-themed address. Ward told The Chronicle in a profile piece that this reference spurred a lot of questions about her sport and competing in the Olympics from other students. She flew home to Oregon for a weekend and then to Durham two days before the convocation.

The profile piece followed her two days after convocation, but Ward received a significant amount of national media coverage surrounding the summer games. USA Today named her an athlete of the week in a June 24 story after her “solid” performance at the Las Vegas Grand Prix in which she won the individual sabre competition. The New York Times lauded the first U.S. gold medal in an article featuring Ward and her teammates’ sweep of the women’s sabre finals.

Falgowski also received national press in a Sept. 10 online interview with ABC News

about her first trip to the Olympics and readjusting to living back in Chapel Hill. She and Heath haven’t received as much attention from university officials and publications as Ward has at Duke, but during the Olympics many current and former Carolina students and athletes encouraged Falgowski through emails and Facebook messages. “[It] was such an inspiration to know that the whole school was behind me,” Falgowski said. “Then coming back, seeing them on campus is such a cool feeling to know that people really are cheering you on back home.”

She came directly back to Chapel Hill from Beijing, missing vacation time at her family’s beach house in Delaware, where she’s spent most of her summers with friends and family. She found diving back into classes and playing for the Tar Heels again a little difficult after taking spring semester off for training.

Rather than giving personal publicity for her athleticism like Ward, The Daily Tar Heel, UNC’s student newspaper, covered Heath’s trip to Beijing by referring to her as a gold-medalist in a program that has many outstanding players in stories about games.

However the Sports Illustrated Web site featured her as part of a series of collegiate athletes who are also Olympians on Aug. 21. Her Facebook admirers are apparent through two groups, “Tobin Heath: Future Star of USWNT” and “Tobin Heath Next Mia Hamm.”

However, Heath transitioned surprisingly easily from Beijing to Chapel Hill.

“It didn’t take too long getting over the fatigue and mentally preparing for a whole other season,” Heath said. “Once I got over that and just started playing and everything, I just went from there.”

This hasn’t been the first time Heath jumped into fall semester. Playing in the U-20 team kept her from playing and becoming acquainted with her teammates during preseason of her freshman year.

In addition to Tar Heel support during the 2008 Olympics, Falgowski credits the intense fandom of UNC students and the Carolina Fever program for preparing her to compete in front of large crowds in Beijing. The members of the student-run pep organization attend sporting events for points toward men’s basketball tickets.

However, Fever members are not just there for the basketball tickets. They are also avid field hockey supporters. They have taken buses to away games at schools like Wake Forest University and the University of Maryland.

“Although it will be an away game, we’ll have a good number of fans and sometimes out cheer the home team,” Falgowski said, “You couldn’t ask for more from your university and peers.”

At an Oct. 9 UNC women’s soccer game versus Boston College, hundreds of Fever members spread out over the center third of the bleachers at Fetzer Field and dwarfed the parents and other audience members to help rally UNC to come back and beat the Eagles 3-2. It’s typical for Fever to have a large turn out at soccer games too, even if it’s on a drizzly, humid night like that. And they don’t just stand there and socialize with each other — members stand against the chain-link fence that separates the stands from the field and grip it as they see a Boston College player push a UNC player 26 RIVAL MAGAZINE • volume 4 • issue 1

hirty-one UNC-Chapel Hill undergraduate and graduate students made history at the Beijing Olympics — but not at the National Stadium or at the National Aquatics Center. The students were part of a pioneer group of media volunteers sought out by the Beijing Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games.

Professor Charlie Tuggle of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication led the team of media volunteers. The select group of 300 journalism and communications majors were chosen from various U.S. universities including UNC, Emerson College, Ithaca College, Purdue University, the University of Iowa and the University of Missouri. Several Australian universities such as Newcastle University and the University of New South Wales also participated in the program.

The students were selected from a pool of 22,000 applicants in an exhaustive process that required each applicant to pass a government background check along with a two-part BOCOG exam that assayed reporting and writing skills.

For eight weeks in Beijing, the 31 UNC students were divided into two groups.

Twenty-four worked for the Olympic News Service corralling quotes from baseball, basketball and shooting athletes. The remaining seven worked in informational

hubs at the International Broadcast Center, the Ling Long Broadcast Tower and the Main Press Center.

The group working at the Ling Long Broadcast Tower, called the Pagoda, gave directions, monitored visitors and redirected broadcaster questions to the appropriate BOCOG officials.

These duties and the workload quickly intensified with the approach of the Games.

Journalism majors junior Bethany Tuggle and senior Meredith Peck worked as flash quote reporters. Tuggle worked basketball games and Peck worked baseball games.

At the end of each game, Tuggle said she would hurry down to the mixed zone — an area en route from the court to the locker room where journalists would stake out athletes for quotes.

“There would sometimes be just a few reporters and other times, such as when the USA teams were playing, there would be dozens of journalists packed in trying to get quotes. I got to see all the basketball players from the USA teams and from every other country that was there too,” Tuggle said.

After obtaining quotes from the athletes, flash quote reporters would type their quotes into information systems that made the quotes available for journalists to use in their stories.

tar tracks What we should be learning

I

n my Spanish class last week, we discussed the difference between two similar verbs, enseñar and educar.

As anyone who has taken a Spanish class can tell you, the infinitive enseñar means “to teach.” And while educar also means “to teach,” it refers to teaching manners or raising a child. My professor told us to use enseñar when describing our school education, and to use educar to describe our home education.

Yes, I recognize there’s a distinction between these two words. But my professor’s talk of separate spheres of learning got me thinking about where our true education takes place.

Throughout our schooling, especially ours in college, we absorb more than just facts, theories and skill sets. When we graduate, our four-year education won’t be summed up by a diploma and a transcript.

Too often we spend so much time and energy stressing about exams, papers and readings that we forget that our classes make up only a small portion of our education.

And sometimes they even seem irrelevant.

For example, I met with a career counselor the other day to go over my resume. He marked through the entire “Relevant coursework” section. I protested.

“You don’t need to list your classes,” he said.

“Employers aren’t interested in the classes you’ve taken.”

I looked down at the “relevant coursework” I had listed. What about all the hours I spent slaving over my media law textbook? What about the spring break I dedicated to my “Media in Mexico” class last year? Was it all for nothing?

One of my good friends is debating whether to get a bachelor of arts or a bachelor of science. If she goes for the bachelor of science, she worries it’d be for the wrong reasons. She doesn’t want to decide on a degree solely as a career move, and she’s not sure if she really craves more science.

Another friend of mine has delighted in taking English classes all through college. But now she’s nervous that law school is inevitable if she ever wants a “real job.”

When did this happen? When did academic expectations become so rigid?

Yes, the job market is competitive, especially considering the failing economy. Yes, we have good reason to question the state of our futures.

Nevertheless, we shouldn’t be so focused on the future that we can’t see the present. There’s more to our education than a list of grades and classes.

Our emphasis should be on learning. And we should appreciate the learning we do both in and out of the classroom.

My friend Kennedy is pursuing an interdisciplinary studies major with a focus on human behavior. But even with all his philosophy, psychology, theology and linguistics classes, he says he has learned far more about human behavior by working at Pita Pit for a year and a half.

“You go to an economics class and learn that people are rationally self-interested,” he said, “and then you talk to people about what they spend their money on, and they’re absolutely not.”

What he meant is there’s an awkward connection between the way people behave in theory and the way they do in reality.

My friend Eliza agrees. She took a semester off from UNC-CH to spend four months in Brazil volunteering at an orphanage. “A classroom only teaches you a theory,” she said. “They don’t teach you what that means in real life. You have to have the real life experience and interaction to be able to really understand.”

Classes and professors only educate us to a point. We have to appreciate that experiential learning can be even more valuable than a textbook education.

There’s more to our education than a list of grades and classes.

The art of homecoming

T

he banner outside the football stadium read “Welcome, alumni!” Quiet, nostalgic senior citizens from the class of 1936 mingled with beer-toting undergraduates and babies sporting “Somebody at Duke Loves Me” onesies. And then there was me, an ’08 graduate, back for the first time since … May. The campus hadn’t changed, nor had the raucous tailgate celebration. The football team was better, and the parking was ­abysmal, as always. In spite of all the familiarity, I couldn’t help but feel like a stranger in a strange land. Had five months really changed me so much?

Returning to one’s alma mater can be tricky. You have to choose between the lecture and the free beer on the plaza; the classy President’s Ball with live music or the lovable sweat-fest at Shooters night club.

But the best part of Homecoming is spending time with old friends and acquaintances. So as I was mingling, I noticed that my fellow graduates fall into one of three groups.

First, you’ve got the alumni who consider their four years of beer-soaked college revelry the pinnacle of their lives.

They’re quick to tell you how “life after graduation sucks,” conveniently forgetting the midterms and the all-nighters, the friend drama and the petty squabbles.

They prefer to focus on forgone free time and blissful lack of responsibility.

The second group consists of more self-satisfied alumni. They spent the last five months getting “so over” the undergraduate scene, but — somehow — they found time to come back. I guess we’re expected to appreciate their half-hearted smiles and longing discussions of [insert metropolitan city of choice here].

And then there are the rest of us caught somewhere between the two. We remember undergrad life in all its glory but also realize that it inevitably had to come to an end. I remember spending one night sophpomore sobbing to my roommate that I would never be ready to leave Duke. Yes, I had a phenomenal four years, but standing in my cap and gown, I was ready to leave.

Which brings me to the working world and its ugly cousin: the job search. With the economy

Without belittling anyone’s fears, I want to offer some comfort: the post-college job search looks a lot scarier from inside senior year than outside of it.

Last October — eleven months and three weeks before I actually started work — I worried that I wouldn’t be able to find something. I was lucky

by Duke’s standards; I ended up with a job offer by early November. But one of my good friends got a coveted position with a nonprofit in late March, while another found her dream job with the MacArthur Theatre in May. A third friend spent the summer after graduation interning abroad while she made up her mind about the future. She just found a great job in Washington D.C. last month.

So if I could offer one piece of advice from beyond, it would be to find a job on your own schedule, and don’t let the Duke job-frenzy stress you out.

Signing time notwithstanding, everyone comes back for Homecoming to dance to “Shout!” under a shower of beer: the straight-A student working in finance, the free spirit who’s teaching abroad, the artsy chick trying to make it in the theatre biz, and the rest of us working all over the country. And as someone in a banana costume dances wildly to “A little bit louder now…,” you’ll smile and ask yourself why you worried so much last year — everything worked out just fine.

andemonium has erupted in the student parking lot at Duke University. Music is blaring. Students dressed in ridiculous costumes show off outrageous dance moves. Beer is plentiful. A pale, skinny guy runs through the crowd in nothing but his underwear with “Weeman” painted on his bare back.

It’s game-day.

At Duke, Tailgate is spelled with a capital “T.” For years now, Duke students have assembled in the “Blue Zone” parking lot hours before the football game kickoff to participate in this tradition.

For many, Tailgate is the epitome of the “work hard, play hard” motto heard often among Duke students.

First-year student Doug Dellinger explains that Tailgate “is a good time for students to let loose and get away from the heavy workload at Duke.”

He attended one Tailgate dressed in a gladiator suit made of Busch Light beer boxes and duct tape.

“It’s a great way to do whatever the hell you want,” first-year student Chris Bayliss said.

Duke senior John Huffsmith said that Tailgate is a very important part of the Duke experience.

“Tailgate promotes a lack of inhibition and experiences that are unusual and unique,” he said.

But some students argue that the Tailgate fervor has lessened over the years. Fifthyear senior Bryan Saltzer put it this way: “Tailgate is one-tenth of what it used to be.”

Alternately, some students prefer to participate in new pre-game festivities on the Main West Quad, which include games and barbecue.

Tailgate isn’t for everyone, though. Duke senior Ben Weiss is a member of the drum line and cannot attend Tailgate due to his responsibilities on the marching band. But Weiss said that even if attending were an option, he wouldn’t go because he’d feel ridiculous in such an environment.

Although Tailgate is not loved by all, hundreds of Duke students cram into the Blue Zone parking lot every game-day.

Others have also noticed their riotous fun. Duke security guard Chad Boggs said, “If I were a student, I’d be interested in Tailgate.”

Weiss’ fellow band member junior Christie Falco, doesn’t share his sentiments about Tailgate.

She says she’d like to go at least once. “I’ve got a pair of butterfly wings in my closet that are dying to get out.”

NC athletics has the students’ school spirit soaring, and it’s not just about basketball.

The recent success of the Tar Heel football team has students around campus joining together to put their support behind another sport’s program for a change.

With a 6-2 record as of press time ­— their best start since beginning 8-0 in 1997 — the Tar Heels have worked their way into the Top-25 polls and are bowl eligible for the first time since 2004.

During the 1990s, the Tar Heels went to six consecutive bowl games and created a consistent winning environment. But after suffering through a 23-48 record the last six seaons, the program appears poised to reestablish itself as a perennial winner, under the direction of second-year head coach Butch Davis.

The success this season has ignited greater support for the team on campus. Kenan Memorial Stadium, once the home of more empty metal bleachers than screaming fans, has welcomed back many students and fans from abroad to occupy its previously unfilled seats this season.

“It’s been so bad the past couple of years that I could see why people would spend their time doing other stuff,” UNC senior, Matt Cozon said.

The number of students attending games has increased dramatically this season.

Though most games don’t require students to have tickets, the games against Notre Dame and the game against N.C. State University, which is scheduled for Nov. 22, both require students to enter a ticket lottery.

Even with the lottery in place at the Oct. 11 game against Notre Dame, students without tickets found a way into the game.

The student section was overcrowded. Students even filled what few empty seats there were outside the student section.

The match-up with Notre Dame, arguably the biggest game in Chapel Hill in 10 years, drew a crowd of 60,500. Though that is still shy of the record Kenan Stadium attendance of 62,000 when the undefeated Tar Heels hosted the Florida State Seminoles in 1997, the crowd was still over stadium capacity.

Even the additional temporary behind the east end zone was filled.

Between UNC students, alumni and Tar Heel fans in general, this season has provided fans with a long-awaited reason for excitement.

“I don’t think it matters whether you graduated from UNC or you’re a new fan,” said Doug Campbell, a UNC alumnus. “If you’re a Tar Heel of any kind, this is the season you have been waiting for.”

Get acquainted with some campus faces you won’t want to forget

Eliot Cohen has an unusual passion for cats — big ones. A junior evolutionary anthropology major at Duke, Cohen has spent the last two summers training and studying jaguars at the Jaguar Conservation Fund in Brazil. “I traveled around Brazil, set up camera traps for jaguars and prey species distribution, and put collars on jaguars to check their health and placement,” he said. Cohen got his start in high school when he worked with a rainforest preservation group that monitors the jaguar population. He said studying jaguars is also studying the environment, which is another one of his passions. “They’re a flagship species and a good indicator of environmental health.” By Kaitlin Atkinson, Duke

Leroy Towns, a professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at UNC-Chapel Hill, is no stranger to Washington politics. Having directed eight successful U.S. House of Representatives campaigns and two U.S. Senate campaigns, Towns is used to working with the media — and being a part of them. A former political reporter, Towns was also the press secretary to Kansas Gov. Robert F. Bennett and spent 21 years serving as chief of staff for Rep. and later Sen. Pat Roberts of Kansas. “My first love has always been journalism, and with government I was able to combine some of those things,” he said.

Towns said he enjoyed working in politics because as a print journalist he was sometimes frustrated with the limits of reporting. “I was able to convey messages and tell stories using various media,” Towns said.

Theresa Cho and Kim Cocce are helping Duke students find common ground. Co-directors of the Common Ground program, Duke seniors Cho and Cocce direct a weekend retreat each semester that brings 56 students together to explore issues involving race, gender, sexual identity and socioeconomic status. Sponsored by Duke’s Center for Race Relations, the retreat includes speakers and activities designed to create an open environment for exploring these personal-identity issues. “Common Ground is about realizing how your personal experiences relate to others’ and appreciating others’ experiences,” said Cocce, a biology major from Barrington, Rhode Island. Cho, a senior public policy major from Closter, New Jersey, said that strong friendships are often formed on the retreats. “That’s how powerful it is. A lot of people are complete strangers, and in three to four days, they have such a deep connection.”

Robert Woodard, the winningest pitcher in UNC-Chapel Hill baseball history, returned to school this semester after having been drafted by the San Diego Padres in 2007. He said he plans to officially graduate with a B.A. in communications before spring training begins in March. With two seasons under his belt, Woodard hopes for a long career but said he has a contingency plan. “I worked really hard to get by and to be successful. I am so close to graduation and it killed me to be that close and not have a degree in my hand.” But Woodard said he loves his unconventional job. “The idea that when I go to work I get to do the same thing I did when I was a little kid is amazing,” he said. “I play a game for a living” During his career at UNC-CH, Woodard amassed 34 wins and helped lead the team to two College World Series appearances. Woodard will graduate in December and plans to stay around Chapel Hill until he moves to San Diego for spring training. By Claire Bynum, UNC
