know that the salt and pepper shakers are supposed to be passed together. I can still maneuver a flawless up-right napkin fold in less than 20 seconds. And I can waltz, merengue and cha-cha-cha at least well enough to get by.

Not that I use any of these skills on a daily basis, of course. As a college student, I’m more likely to dance in a bar than a ballroom and can’t even remember the last time I used cloth napkin — or a real fork, for that matter.

Still, it’s not a bad thing to feel comfortable if ever placed in a situation that requires such etiquette expertise.

A three-story Barbie dream house on my fifth birthday. A car when I turned 16. A college education. And someone there to cheer for me at every single special event from preschool awards day through graduation next month. All these things my parents worked extra hard to provide and certainly didn’t want to see their efforts go to waste simply because I didn’t feel comfortable in my ability to adapt to new circumstances and or pursue opportunities as they arise throughout life.

Being comfortable means being empowered. Comfort is an extra boost of confidence. It can help you address any issue, seize any opportunity and go anywhere that might enrich you as a person or add to your life experiences.

I want this issue of Rival to make your more comfortable. Our fine dining feature is a great starting point for anyone hoping to increase their knowledge of Triangle eateries. Our story about the honor systems at Duke and UNC-CH’s will explain the workings of the honor code you may be unfamiliar with. And our opinion columns are sure present some ideas that will open your eyes — and maybe your minds.

College years are an excellent opportunity to experience and explore like no other time. Finding a way to be comfortable with a vast array of cultures, subjects, ideas and places right now ensures better opportunities for the future.

Though I didn’t always appreciate the things my parents insisted I experience at the time, I’m very thankful for the idea behind their efforts. So, be it an unexpected visitor, a cocktail networking affair or a napkin-folding contest against old people singing showtunes in a salsa club, thanks to Mom and Dad, I’m prepared to handle it.

F

or over 30 years, the Duke Diet and Fitness Center has aided people in weight loss endeavors by teaching lifestyle changes that promote longterm weight managment. Nestled next to Pratt Street in Durham, the Diet and Fitness Center, a program where the average client particpates in day-long regimens for three to four weeks. Former clients include American Idol winner Ruben Studdard, baseball legand Hank Aaron and people from countries all around the world.

During their programs, clients take classes about nutrition, calories and portion sizes in ways that promote lifestyle changes rather than temporary fixes. Outside of class clients exercise in state of the art facilities such as the indoor/outdoor pool where over seven courses are taught.

One type of lifestyle change that the center promotes is healthy eating. The program breaks down eating to three full meals a day where people are given the choice many different dishes such as veal roulade, spinach with roasted garlic and strip steak.

“I like helping people and being creative.

I work with motivated people,” says Elizabetta Politi, the program’s nutritional director. Politi also helps with choosing menu items as well as teaching cooking classes at the center. The varied food selection allows clients to take what they have learned from the program and incorporate the knowledge into every day life.

One client, Frederick Dyllon, 63, from Washington, D.C. has been visiting the Diet and Fitness Center annually for the past eight years. The first year he did the

full four week program and lost about 25 pounds. Throughout the past seven years, he has participated in the club program, which includes access to three meals a dayand the work out facilities.

“It’s perfect,” Dyllon says. “Everything is good. I like the classes, the swimming and the food. I wish they were located in Washington, D.C.”

A

rt with heart – that’s the kind of work you can expect to see at UNC-CH’s newest gallery, the Artery.

The Artery, which opened in November, showcases an array of pieces—sculptures, installations, paintings, prints and photographs. But the Artery’s true novelty is that it is entirely student-run and exhibits only student work. From selecting and hanging the work to closing sales on the art, the Artery is managed solely by students and overseen by Kappa Pi, the art and art history honors fraternity.

“When we started the Artery, we were really looking for a way UNC students could show their work. We also wanted to give students interested in a career in art administration a professional setting. We wanted this to really be a stepping stone into the art world,” says Natalia Davila, a junior from Miami, who founded the Artery along with seniors Hallie Ringle and Gavin Hackeling.

Part of the Artery’s success comes from the dedication of the student volunteers who run the gallery and the artists who share their work. Approximately 60 volun-

teers and artists participate in each show. A selection committee chooses the art to be displayed, an exhibition committee sets up the shows and a staff works in the gallery during its open hours.

For each show, the Artery receives close to 100 art submissions, which is narrowed down to 20 or 30 pieces that are actually picked. ”We get some really amazing work. Right now we have a stunning sculpture series of island figures and a projection piece that deals with light and shadow,” Davila says.

“We really wanted somewhere for these great works of art to be seen.”

Bringing visibility to student art was the idea behind the Artery. The inspiration for a student-run gallery came when Ringle heard about a UNC-CH student gallery that operated in 2003.

The Artery’s predecessor closed mainly due to problems with funding and exhibition space. But Ringle, Devila and Hackeling remedied those issues by scouting vacant spaces around Chapel Hill and applying for grants. Additional advertising on National Public Radio (NPR) and local

Artery staff took their cues from surrounding vendors and crafted their own version of the sidewalk sign to draw patrons to the less frequented Rosemary Street. newspapers has helped keep foot traffic at the gallery high.

The Artery hopes to maintain its funding through sales, fundraisers and more grants.

“We’re really excited because we have our Students of the World (SOW) fundraiser opening on March 19 and running through to April 2. The show will feature documentary photography from past SOW trips and will support the group’s summer trip to Tanzania,” Davila said. “And our next exhibit will be sometime in April.”

Now, in its current location in the Bank of America Center, the Artery is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday 5 to 9 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A 10-year tradition in the Chapel Hill and Carrboro arts scene, 2ndFriday Artwalk offers both art critics and novices the chance to visit galleries and exhibits for free. The ArtsCenter

The ArtsCenter on East Main Street in Carrboro is an excellent place for students to listen to music, see local theater productions or take classes to enhance their own creativity. While classes, ranging from T’ai-Chi to Tuscan style cooking to metalsmithing, usually cost more than $100, less expensive musical productions and art exhibits can fit into most college budgets.

Pinhook

For the older crowd, at least according to your ID, Pinhook on West Main Street is an eclectic and grown-up derivative of the East Campus coffee house, minus the milkshakes, but infinitely more interesting. The combination of arcade games, dimly lit pool table and bar, local art, and live local and touring bands makes for a fun and laid-back night.

Foster’s Market

Foster’s Market epitomizes the homogeny of the Durham community. It is a grocery, a classic lunch spot and a popular gathering site. “We’ve been in Durham for 20 years,” says Sara Foster founder and owner of Foster’s Market. “I feel like we’re definitely a part of the community and that the community has supported us.” But UNC-CH students note, there is a sister location in Chapel Hill on Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.

Open Eye Café

Open Eye is a hip coffee shop located on Greensboro Street in Carrboro. Patrons can sample a worldwide array of coffee blends, check out local art and listen to live music on most weekend nights. It’s the perfect place to spend a lazy Sunday after a late night out.

Tyler’s Tap Room

Recently nominated for the 2010 Best of the Triangle Awards, Tyler’s Tap Room is perfect for students hoping to venture off Franklin Street — but not too far. This restaurant, located on Main Street in Carrboro, compliments its delicious burgers with a selection of 32 different beers. Hang around late at the Room’s bar counterpart, the Speakeasy, which stays open until 2 a.m.

Southern Village Entertainment on the Green

The quaint community of Southern Village, just a short V or NS bus ride from the UNC-CH campus, is worth noting simply for its pleasant atmosphere and locally owned shops. What might be of interest to students, however, is the live music played on the community green during summer months.

Scrap Exchange is a strange and glorious place of scraps — sheets of fabric, tubs of tubes, marble and bubble wrap. Currently the only place of its kind in North Carolina, people flock to the store on Foster Street to find the displaced odds and ends they need to create something beautiful. Also, they will gladly throw your next birthday party.

The Museum of Life and Sciences

For those who are children at heart, the Museum of Life and Sciences can fulfill your every pedagogical whim. On less-busy Wednesdays, forget going to lecture, study life through giant molecules and lunar modules. “I enjoyed it as a kid because I could pet the animals and go on train rides,” says Salil Saxena, a Duke first-year and Durham native.

Brightleaf Square

Almost all Duke students eventually find their way to Brightleaf Square but how many have seen the twinkly cobblestone square through Durhamite tinted glasses? Instead of hopping a cab to Nikos with everyone else, try an early Thursday night dinner at Mellow Mushroom followed by an hour or so of browsing the CDs and records in Offbeat Music.

Defining Fine Dining

Fairview Dining Room

A

fter walking through a fairly dark corridor lined with the bronze busts of the Duke-family men, we arrived at the large Fairview Dining Room in formal attire at 8 p.m. My boyfriend Chris, a junior at Duke and full-out vegetarian (no meat or fish), and I were greeted by the hostess’s friendly smile and were seated toward the front of the almost empty, dimly lit restaurant next to a wall decorated with three antique English mirrors.

Large elegant rugs cover the dark wooden floor and look like larger versions of the Italian tapestries my grandfather used to have in his home. The tables are adorned with beautiful china rimmed and painted with gold designs, which the restaurant had custom made in England. Our waiter, Jason, was professional, attentive and extremely patient while answering my nu-

merous questions about the menu.

A couple of minutes after bringing a bread basket filled with slices of olive bread, French baguette and warm cheddar biscuits, Jason surprised both of us with an amuse-bouche. The bite-sized hors d’oeuvre was tender beef topped with scallions, fresh Julienned tomatoes and sweet melted cheese served at room temperature.

Noticing Chris had ordered the only vegetarian dish on the menu, Jason courteously asked him if he was a vegetarian, still holding the tiny plate of meat in his hand.

He assured Chris the chef could create a vegetarian amuse-bouche for him, which turned out to be a refreshing treat of avocado and tomato slices arranged over cubed roasted beets and moistened with teriyaki jus. Check for palate stimulation.

Next was the artisan cheese plate boasting Boucheron goat cheese from France, roar-

ing forties blue cheese from Australia, and Manchego sheep’s milk cheese from Spain.

In the middle sat addictive fresh honeycomb and dried fig compote, effectively complimenting the sharp blue cheese. The creamy and flavorful goat cheese instantly took me back to meals at my adorable aunt’s house in Avignon, France, usually followed by a wide selection of strong gourmet French cheeses.

Chris preferred the Manchego, drier and harder in texture but still smooth and pleasing to the tongue.

The delightful roasted beet and chèvre salad that we both admirably enjoyed was a treat for the eyes,

nose and palate. Yellow and red slices of firm roasted beets were arranged next to a small green mountain of fresh spinach sprinkled with crunchy toasted pistachio and dressed with seductive blood orange vinaigrette that was both sweet and tart. By the time we finished our salads, most of the tables, which had been mainly occupied with older men in suits, were cleared. The soft classical music was no longer drowned by light clattering and soft conversations. An inviting smoky aroma teased my nostrils and I knew my entrée was on its way.

The deep pink Scottish salmon crusted in porcini mushrooms and topped with sweet shredded crabmeat was served over cubes of homey Yukon potatoes and sautéed spinach. Cooked on a cedar plank, the fish was woody, smoky and served with a pool of a savory sweet pepper and crab sauce. Chris’s

lemongrass rice noodles, however, were a disappointment and certainly not worth $22. The plate was an overwhelming fusion of noodles, sautéed butternut squash, shiitake mushrooms, carrots and snow peas, strongly flavored by the basil coconut chili broth that was not only really spicy, but excessively overpowering. It’s a shame the kitchen didn’t nail the only vegetarian dish on the menu the way it did with the salmon entrée.

For dessert, the decadent Valrhona chocolate molten cake took an appropriate 15 minutes to bake into the dark brownie-like texture, housing dense warm lava that oozes out with the first dip of the spoon. The deep wave of richness is countered by the refreshing coffee ice cream and pillowy cardamom foam, leaving your belly and spirit abundantly satisfied.

Scottish Salmon on Seared Plank $29

Scottish crusted salmon accompanied by sautéed spinach and Yukon potatoes all flavored by a red pepper and crab sauce on the side.

Compote: French: sweet fruit cooked in syrup, usually served as a dessert.

Cardamom: Strong aromatic spice traditionally used in Indian cooking.

Ciabatta: Italian white bread made from wheat flour and yeast.

Jus: French word for juice; usually a light sauce used to enhance a type of meat.

Valrhona Chocolate Molten Cake $8

Carolina Crossroads The Carolina Crossroads restaurant, a self-described Southern Jewel, located in the Carolina Inn next to the UNC-CH campus is a happy scene; scented warmly by the delicate smell of fish cooking and fresh pepper. The medium-sized dining room is inviting and cozy with bright yellow walls that match the single rose on each table. My brother Roberto and I occupied a corner table outlined by a comfortable C-shaped booth that hosted an adorable elderly couple at the opposite corner.

The blue-and-white décor scheme of the leather booths feels cozy and is echoed all the way down the draperies and ceramic vases that carry beautiful white orchids.

Our waiter, Victor, had a wonderful smile and pleasant disposition that made us easily forgive and actually not even mind the sometimes lag service.

Our dinner began with a creamy mushroom and brie soup in a tall shot glass meant to whet the appetite that proved to be delicious and successful. Overcome with powerful hunger, Roberto and I dominated the warm brown pumpernickel raisin bread and pumpkin seed ciabatta in less than three minutes, which reminded me of family meals at home where my brother and I would fight over the best plate.

My first plate was a fluffy mound of organic spinach topped with thick moons of Zinfandel poached pears and a delicious warm cake of crisp pecan crusted blue cheese. The union of flavors – sweet from crunchy pecans, salty from the sharp creamy cheese and acidic from the red wine – mirrored the varied textures of this

satisfying dish. Roberto’s aromatic cauliflower and white cheddar cheese soup was a hearty yellow cream sprinkled with salty crisp bacon pieces.

Next came the slowly braised pork osso bucco, an Italian dish that literally means pierced bone, whose savory cloud of steam of rosemary, thyme, and vinegar made my mouth water and tongue sting with desire.

The size of a child’s leg, the dark shank meat that barely held onto the thick skeleton cylinder towered atop bright locally grown N.C. sweet potatoes, earthy collard greens and fried crispy Brussels sprouts, all lacquered by the sweet and copious Bourbon cider jus. The pungent fattiness of the phenomenally tender dish was rich and filling, but completely worth it. Roberto’s seafood feast featured oven-roasted snapper served with colorful spicy shrimp jambalaya and sweet onions. The snwapper was tender and crunchy with its sweet roasted skin and collided peacefully with the fiery zest of little sausage pieces flooded by the tangy bubbling sauce that tasted like harmonious combination of sweet and salt.

Committed to trying something new, which in the Rupcich family means anything that doesn’t have chocolate, we were happily surprised at the successful taste of the blackberry sage tart covered with Grand Marnier ice cream adorned by fresh berries. The crumbly belly of the tart was filled with sweet blackberries and protected by a hard crust, softened by the sour raspberry syrup surrounding the cakey island and topped with the slightly bitter ice cream, an alliance of flavors that could change the color of a mood ring.

The owners of Butternut Squash say one shouldn’t be required to pay an extravagant amount of money for an appetizing, healthy meal.

At Butternut Squash in University Square, highly nutritional food catered for the vegetarian crowd won’t cost any more than $12. Sunday brunch is a huge hit, as well as the fresh produce that comes directly from local organic farmers. The health-conscious employees are kind and passionate supporters of the vegetarian and vegan lifestyles.

Individuals who do not practice vegetarianism are of course invited to share a nourishing meal with friends or family. And with Butternut Squash being so close to campus, there’s no excuse to pass it up!

A 10-minute car ride from Duke will bring you to Spartacus Restaurant, a Greek and Mediterranean family establishment that has existed for 16 years. Its renowned rack of lamb dish attracts both Duke and UNC-CH clientele. The locally owned and operated establishment caters and hosts a number of special events. Each Friday, Paola, the belly dancer, ignites the atmosphere. A full buffet is prepared for the Sunday crowd and Wednesday marks the half-off bottle of wine night. Entrees don’t surpass $20 at the distinctively exotic Spartacus Restaurant.

Four Square Restaurant is as much of a culinary treat as it is a historical one. Located in the 100-year-old Bartlett Mangum House, Four Square specializes in contemporary American cuisine. “Guests continue to be intrigued by the constant menu rotation; to accommodate seasonal changes in food, a fresh menu is revealed every other month,” says Maitre D’hôtel, Brandon Carr. The average cost per guest is around $60, if wine is factored in. Outdoor dining with a garden view is also an option at Four Square, which is only an eight-minute drive from Duke.

Described as “the go-to-place for Islamic studies,” Duke and UNC-CH’s annual Islamic Studies Conference attracts international participants and is quickly becoming a staple event for scholars within the field. by lysa chen, duke design by mary pell lea, UNC-CH

uke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are known for going headto-head on the basketball court.

But among a small group of scholars, Duke and UNC-CH are known for combining minds from around the world at an annual Islamic studies conference hosted by and for graduate students to make topics in the discipline more accessible to a broader audience.

Reflecting the Universities’ progressive approach to Islamic studies, the conference invites not only scholars studying Islam or the Arab world but also other religious

fields and non-religious fields like sociology and archeology, say organizers. The seventh annual conference was held this February at the John Hope Franklin Center for Interdisciplinary & International Studies at Duke. The location alternates between the Universities each year.

“The questions we ask and the ways we talk about our work are different, because the people we talk to are not specialists in our studies,” says Matthew Hothman, a Duke first-year religious studies Ph.D. candidate from Boise, Idaho, who helped organize this year’s conference. “We are disseminating this message to people who

don’t normally think this way. There is a broader audience you need to speak to, not just those interested in what you study, so we can all discuss these questions together.”

Nowadays, the conference brings in graduate students and junior professors from around the world to share their research on topics ranging from Halal food to Muslim feminists, says Nadia Khan of Chapel Hill, a conference organizer and first-year religion masters student at Duke. This year’s conference — titled “No!: Subjectivity and Agency in Muslim Rights/Rites of Negation” — attracted participants from England, Turkey, and Trinidad and Tobago.

“We also had applicants from Yemen, Pakistan and Iran,” Khan says. “If it wasn’t for funding, we would be super international.”

Participants, whose papers are accepted by a committee of Duke and UNC-CH students, present their research during panels at the two-day conference and receive questions and feedback from other graduate students and faculty. This year, Duke and UNC-CH students hosted the conference but did not participate in it.

Despite its current status, the conference did not always attract scholars from around the world, according to Ebrahim Moosa, associate professor of Islamic studies at Duke, who helped found the first conference seven years ago to allow students to showcase their research and practice speaking.

“The conference has now grown in a phenomenal manner,” Moosa wrote in an email. “This annual conference is now on the diary of every aspiring and serious graduate student within North America and beyond…It is now a five-star event.”

Above all, the conference is a networking opportunity, organizers and participants say.

Eleanor Finnegan of Gainesville, Fla., a

fifth-year Ph.D. candidate at the University of Florida, participated in her third DukeUNC-CH conference this year. She says she keeps coming back because the conference offers a high concentration of scholars who share her interests, although her research focuses on religion and nature.

“I don’t go to other schools for Islamic conferences so that might speak to the fact that UNC-CH and Duke’s program is different,” Finnegan says, adding that the conference also provides thoughtful feedback from faculty and students.

Khan says the panels teach students to explain their research clearly and accessibly.

“All graduate students have the same problem: we speak ‘dissertationese,’” she said. “Even your own community of scholars might not understand what you’re saying.”

Maryam Al-Zoubi of Raleigh, a UNC-CH senior double majoring in international studies and Arabic studies, attended the second day of the conference. She says as an undergraduate she took away useful information, which was easier to understand with all the different approaches of different scholars.

“Not only was I learning about an interesting topic but I was being taught how to research and write about it,” Al-Zoubi says.

“I wish more people had gone.”

This year’s conference hosted 16 panelists and approximately 50 audience members during its two-day span, Khan says.

Moosa says the conference broadcasts to participants and potential future students that Duke and UNC-CH are “the go-to place when it comes to Islamic studies.”

Just as the schools co-host the conference, their Islamic studies programs are intertwined, with students in either program taking classes at the other University. Khan, whose mother and sister attended UNCCH, says there is a playful sense of rivalry with the Duke students known for being “snobbier.”

“But I don’t think my experience would be the same at all if I couldn’t go to UNC-CH,” Khan says, adding for example that the school is known for its Persian program.

“So we are snobbier but it comes with a humility.”

Serving Yourself

Recently, a close friend of mine asked me to contribute a small donation to a foreign service project that provides clean drinking water to impoverished communities in Africa. As she excitedly explained, “This is something with direct, tangible benefits.

People who didn’t have water before will actually have it now.” I couldn’t help but wonder how I had grown so cynical as I groaned and asked her how much she actually knew about the organization, its methods and its actual effects on the communities. Before I could stop myself, I was quoting statistics on how the vast majority of wells built in developing countries become inoperable after a few years due to lack of proper maintenance. Sure, her money would build a well, but would that mean sustained access to drinking water? Probably not.

The conversation thoroughly depressed me. And I continued to question how had I become so cynical about helping others overseas? Why was I trying to squash my friend’s beliefs when she was devoting herself to a well-intentioned cause?

Unfortunately, my apprehension began with my Duke Engage experience last summer in Peru.

Going into my project, I knew that to expect major change in a community’s standard of living was highly unrealistic; I knew I would only be able to help in a small way. I was unprepared for the triviality and absurdity of what I actually did as “service.”

Twice a week my project group visited a rural community for what was supposed to be a health and environmental conservation education campaign. We were there to teach the women of the community sanitation methods and how to protect their natural resources, though most of our visits involved the volunteers cleaning a woman’s house while she watched. We shook out her rugs, picked up trash from her yard and re-organized the clutter on her shelves. In other words, we did nothing the woman wasn’t perfectly capable of doing herself. And never once did one of the women ask us to do any of these little chores around her house. I left Peru without ever knowing whether they found our efforts in their homes helpful or bothersome.

Throughout my two-month internship with Duke Engage, I

came to feel that the projects existed mainly to give American volunteers something to do; to provide a pretense to justify our being in the foreign country and the exotic communities.

Of course, cultural exposure and education are some of the major goals of the Duke Engage program. But why can’t just being in the community be justification in itself? Why must we invent service projects to give us a reason to send students abroad? Anyone who has served abroad will admit that the volunteer gains much more in insight and experience than the persons being served receive in actual improvements to their lives. I began to wonder why the “service” label is even necessary.

It seems educational institutions have made it clear that the ideal student is involved in service; it’s a must-have for the college application and looks good on job resumes. On any given day, walking across the Bryan Center Plaza, you are bound to see other students promoting a variety of causes. Why do so many Duke students, myself included, feel the need to get involved in service? First, it just feels great. Anyone can enjoy the elated feeling of believing he or she is improving the life of another person. We have also been taught since we were young that service is the “right thing to do” and helps contribute to society.

Therefore, service becomes a necessary aspect of a student’s conception of himself or herself.

I do service so that I can think of myself as a caring person and see my role in a community as one of both power and morality.

When I reflect on my decision to do Duke Engage in Peru, I must admit I mostly just wanted the experience. I wanted to live temporarily in a foreign country, practice a new language, and become a more globally literate citizen. I wanted to come home with a wealth of personal insight. I did it for myself.

All this is not to say that students should feel guilty about their service efforts or cease to dedicate themselves to these projects. It is quite the contrary. All these personal benefits are worthy reasons to participate. Yet students should recognize that they really aren’t giving anything – they are exchanging their service efforts for a crucial part of their identity.

Students may donate money to someone in need, but they are equally repaid in the way the charity allows them to view themselves. Perhaps programs such as Duke Engage should stop calling their activities “service” and more fully embrace the implications of the name “Duke Engage,” by understanding the involvement abroad not as service rather as pure and simple “engagement” with another world.

The Woes of Indecision

A

worrisome trend has developed among my circle of friends that has left me isolated and disconcerted. No, they’re not hanging out at frats regularly, or wearing leggings with no shorts. It’s not as serious as these acquisitions, but it still demands immediate and direct attention. You see, my first-year friends have started declaring majors.

And not just any majors. Majors that suit their personalities perfectly, have good future job outlooks and encompass all their wildest dreams since infancy. I’m having a hard time deciding which exclamation is more inherently sarcastic — “YAY!!” or “Fan-tastic!!” — regardless, that’s about how excited I am for them happily choosing their majors. I now know how Sarah Jessica Parker felt in all those episodes of “Sex and the City” as she watched her friends happily marry away. Me? I’m just stuck in my room alone with my closest male companions, Ben & Jerry, dreaming of what it would feel like to know what I want to do with the rest of my life.

Entering my first year in college, the typical reaction from friends and family to my undecided major was unnecessary and frustrating optimism — as if having no idea what I wanted to do with my life was supposed to give me some great advantage in exploring my options. Well, I missed that boat.

Trust me! I’m exploring. I’m the Ponce de Leon of course major exploration. My current schedule is a randomly generated inventory of subject matter. Yet I feel no closer to choosing a subject realm I want to pursue for the rest of my life.

Instead all I have found are the things I don’t want to do the rest of my life.

For example, after gaining the first-year 15 in the first 15 days of school, I have ruled out physical fitness/ therapy entirely. And after finding out that we don’t study narwhals until Chapter 15, my marine science class is becoming harder and harder to attend even at the leisurely time of noon. After meeting some Biology and Chemistry majors, I have chosen

to keep my social skills rather than pursuing a pre-med track.

I’m also pretty certain that engineering is mostly magic-based and upon graduation, I’d be given a wand instead of a diploma.

As for psychology: If I have to weed through a stream of nonsensical babble to understand what you’re talking about, the professors should expect my essays to be the same.

I’m trying to think if I have left out anyone to offend. Obviously, I’m not bitter! It’s just that having a chosen major is comparable to finding the Golden Snitch in Quidditch. You just automatically win The College Game! The act of choosing inspires confidence and motivation in pursuing one specific realm of studies, and therefore evokes extreme envy from lonely “undecided” majors like myself.

I was recently joined by a biology major at dinner who explained that he “had just always wanted to help people,” and was thus pursuing the pre-med route in hopes of joining Doctors Without Borders after graduation. Not only did this make me feel like a disgraceful human being for not doing the same, but I was shocked that someone knew since they “could remember” their desired career path. You know what I wanted to do when I was six? I wanted to be a zookeeper. And I checked — I don’t even have to attend college to do that. My backup career as dolphin isn’t panning out well either.

I’m beginning to think that the ‘heelprint’ promised to me at orientation really is just my Nikes stuck in the mud somewhere. And although I’m discouraged with my own lack of directedness — I know two things for sure. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is where I am supposed to be.

And I am not alone.

As I walk by a pit preacher damning me to hell on any given day or a couple doing some rather naked studying on the sixth floor of Davis Library, I’m reminded of the beauty that is UNC-CH. And anytime I meet other undecided majors, I feel an immediate bond with them. As if our lack of career options binds us together in preparation for future homelessness.

I wish I could end with some hopeful statements regarding the decidedly bleak outlook of my future. But I can only hope that one day I will have an officially declared major, laughing at the friendless undecided majors studying subjects with no relevant interest to them. Until that day, I might as well start building a tolerance for cold SpaghettiO’s.

Promoting awareness

F

reedom is something that many college students pride themselves on obtaining once they pack their bags and leave the watchful eyes of their parents after high school, but what many students do not realize is that the freedom gained on college campuses like Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is only maintained through the honor system. Whether it is signing an honor pledge on a test or trusting that the student beside you will not copy your answers, students at both universities deal with issues of honor on a daily basis.

Both Duke and UNC-CH have strong honor codes woven into all aspects of campus life. Such codes encourage academic and social integrity at both Universities, and are overseen by various governing bodies made up of students and faculty who work to promote the honor code, address issues of honor and reprimand stu20 RIVAL MAGAZINE • volume 5• issue 4

At Duke, the two governing bodies that most directly deal with issues of honor are the Honor Council and the Student Conduct Board. The Honor Council at Duke is unique in that it does not ever adjudicate cases of honor, but instead the Council’s primary goal is promoting awareness of the Duke Community Standard, also known as the honor code, which states, “I will not lie, cheat, or steal in my academic endeavors; I will conduct myself honorably in all my endeavors; and I will act if the Standard is compromised.” At Duke, the Office of Student Conduct and the Conduct Board are the governing bodies responsible for implementing disciplinary action on students who violate the Community Standard. However, the cases that the Conduct Board sees are not limited to issues of honor but include all cases that necessitate disciplinary action.

“I have been at Duke 11 years, and my understanding of the history of this body is that it wanted to be totally separate from adjudication, focusing on education of what it means to be a member of the Duke community,” says Stephen Bryan, the associate dean for student conduct at Duke.

Duke’s Honor Council is made up of 25 students who work closely with faculty members to sponsor activities that endorse integrity in all aspects of campus life. These events include guest speakers, panel discussions about honor and the Ethics Ambassadors program in which students are recognized by their peers for honorable behavior.

“In terms of outreach, we normally work on a smaller scale. During exams we give out small promotional items like pens, coffee holders, stress balls, etc. that have the council logo to serve as other reminders of academic integrity,” says Honor Council member Eliza French, a junior Art History major from Fairfax, VA.

Adjudicating cases

The honor code at UNC-CH, in its simplest form, requires students to “Refrain from lying, cheating, or stealing.” In comparison to Duke’s honor system, the honor system at UNC-CH is composed of three major governing bodies, the Attorney General’s Staff, the Honor Court, and the Honor System Outreach, that work together to not only promote awareness of this honor code but also to adjudicate honor cases and reprimand students by determining correct punishments.

The Attorney General is chosen by the Student Body President each year and is responsible for overseeing his or her Cabinet, the Managing Associates, and the Counsel. The Attorney General’s staff make up the members of the honor system who are most involved in the initial phases of the violation. The Managing Associates meet with accused students neutrally to inform them about how the honor system works, to assign them counsel, and to schedule their hearing dates. The Counsel act as lawyers at the scheduled hearings by presenting the honor cases to the Honor Court in a way that either defends the accused or supports the party that reported the violation. The Attorney General, the Managing Associates, and the Counsel all work together throughout the process to make sure things run smoothly and to encourage a fair trial.

The Honor Court is made up of sixtyfive students who sit in on the hearings and deliberate on the innocence or guilt of a particular accused student and from there determine a suitable punishment.

“The most common Honor Code violation is plagiarism. It’s amazing how these cases pile up around midterms and exams.

The majority of cases I have dealt with are plagiarism cases, but one can see DUIs and drug cases, among others,” says UNC-CH Honor Court member Michael Hamon, a junior English and Public Policy major from Chapel Hill.

honor court as a scary and intimidating institution, its goal is to discover truth and to sentence accordingly. “The purpose of an Honor Court hearing is to allow the student to build a case in favor of leniency towards their offense,” says Hamon. “Students with convincing mitigating circumstances can lessen their punishment, or, if the offense is particularly grave, can be sentenced more harshly.”

A fighting chance

Keri Berman, a former member of the honor court from Rockville, Md., who graduated in 2009 from UNC-CH with a double major in political science and psychology and now attends Harvard Law School, was encouraged to apply for the honor court her sophomore year by one of her sorority sisters who was a senior member at the time. Berman says that being a member of the honor court was one of the best decisions she made as an undergraduate and has given her a step-up in criminal law and civil procedure classes at Harvard.

Like Hamon, she believes the honor system at UNC-CH gives accused students a chance to fight for their innocence, especially if they have been denied this right in real court. Berman commented on a particularly noteworthy case involving a student whom she believed, by using the

standard of beyond a reasonable doubt, innocent but had been intimidated by the police in to admitting guilt.

“She was going to lose all her scholarship money and have to leave school, so getting her acquitted was the most meaningful case for me because she got a raw deal out of not knowing how to work the system and it was good to address this in honor court even though she got screwed over in real court.”

The Honor System Outreach is the third and newest addition to the UNC-CH honor system. It could be compared to Duke’s Honor Council in that its primary goal is the promotion of integrity and the honor code in all aspects of campus life.

One of the Honor System Outreach’s focal events is Honor and Integrity Week. Held in the fall of each new school year, Honor and Integrity Week is comprised of various guest speakers, debates on ethical issues and a mock Honor Court hearing, among other things.

At both Duke and UNC-CH, the honor systems are mostly run by students with guidance from faculty members and administrators. Questions arise if this type of atmosphere, in which students are the ones judging other students, is ideal.

The Office of the Honor System at UNC-CH is located in the Student Academic Services Building (North) in Suite 0103.

“While students may not realize this, one potential drawback of having students on the panel is that — believe it or not — students can be harsher than the faculty and staff wants to be,” says Stephen Bryan, associate dean of students and director of the Student Conduct Office at Duke.

However, both schools work hard to train new members and make sure that each student on the Honor Court or member of the Student Conduct Board is qualified to judge cases fairly. In fact, the training process is one of the major setbacks that Keri Berman sees with the system. “It takes a long time to get new counsels dialed in to the process,” Berman says. “They have to train by shadowing cases and it takes a long time for new members to get their own cases.”

The potential bias that may arise from peer to peer relationships is another concern that arises from the types of honor systems seen at Duke and UNC-CH. “We train our panelists to recognize their own biases,” says Bryan. “Such as attitudes regarding underage drinking, for example, and the importance of placing those aside when necessary in order to be aligned with the University’s values.”

Signs such as these are posted in every academic building on campus at UNCCH, reminding students of the expectation to comply with the Honor Code.

T

he word “guia” means guide in Spanish and that is exactly what the after-school program for Latino/Latina students at Sherwood Githens Middle School is meant to be: a guide in service learning and tutoring.

The program is a collaboration between student volunteers at Duke University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Beginning with a pilot semester two years ago, Guia has since developed under the guidance of UNC-CH and Duke students with the support of Githens staff and administration. Becky Agostino, a Duke junior and economics major from Andover, Mass., created the pilot and presented it to Githens administrators. The school was specifically chosen due to its need for more mentoring programs for Latino/Latina students and convenient location halfway between both Universities.

Guia began as a two day a week language improvement service for Latino/Latina students but is now partnered with the Encore!, an after-school program available to all Durham public school students, and

has grown significantly. Encore! provides students with small-group after-school tutoring, and arts and crafts projects.

This year, Guia holds activities four days a week. Language days, usually on Thursdays, are conducted separately from Encore! and involve one hour of tutoring in Spanish and one hour in English. Tutoring

is always one-on-one for Guia students.

The focus of language days is to improve students’ reading and writing skills, and also give volunteers a chance to practice their Spanish skills, one of the many benefits of volunteering with the program.

In addition to language skill improvement, service learning is a major theme of Guia. Students focused on the environment as a service issue last semester and this semester’s theme is homelessness and hunger in the community.

Service days are on Tuesdays and often involve activities meant to prepare the children for upcoming weekend field trips.

For example, Guia students recently practiced interviews in preparation for their trip to Urban Ministries of Guzman and Aum lead students in the tutoring portion of the Guia program Durham, a private nonin Ms. Guthrie’s classroom. profit organization that

provides food, clothing, shelter and supportive services to the needy and homeless.

The students will interview Urban Ministry members for a Story Sharing Project.

“The goal behind the theme for this semester is to help students understand that these problems are real and to show them a human side to the issue,” says volunteer Tori Wilmarth, a first-year Duke student and public policy major from Andover, Mass. Wilmarth directs service learning days on Tuesdays, which usually involve approximately seven students.

According to Wilmarth the program was specifically developed for middle-school students to aid the growing Latino/Latina population of students and help impact students at a critical time in their lives. “We all remember how middle school could be awkward. We want to help students through

that and also help them get past any language and cultural barriers,” says Wilmarth.

Guia students must now pay the $50 Encore! fee to be eligible for the program, which includes access to the paid teacher on staff and due to the partnership, a bus that transports students home after the program is over at 4:30 p.m. This cost may be deterring some families’ involvement in the program, but Guia leaders hope that additional funding and grants will help to supplement this cost to students.

I

n this contemporary age, the beauty and spirit of childbirth is generally thrust upon students in a middle-school health class, an unwelcome intrusion that is often more horrifying and graphic than miraculous. Unsurprisingly, modernday American births are a sterile affair, with more and more women opting for caesarean sections and drugs to help them numb the experience.

A recently organized society of professional birth assistants, called doulas, is hoping to change the tide of these institutionalized births by accompanying women who choose natural births and helping to make the birth experience more rewarding and positive. Births have historically been attended by other female companions, whether relatives or friends, who stand by the mother and guide her through the process. Oftentimes, these experiences are passed down from mother to daughter in order to instill a sense of respect and awe for childbirth in future generations. Today, doulas are the modern incarnation of these birth assistants and they strive to provide comfort and ease the oft-bewildering experience of having a baby.

The professional doula, as defined by recently-founded Doulas of North America (DONA), is much more than a comforting bedside presence during birth, however.

Among the many services doulas assist with, they also can provide physical comfort through massage, positioning or breathing techniques and suggestions on movement.

Also, doulas are excellent sources for expert advice on all aspects of baby-care and can guide parents-to-be toward other resources, such as birthing classes and support networks. As DONA writes in their position paper on birth doulas, “The doula’s goal is to help the woman have a safe and satisfying childbirth as the woman defines it.”

A safe option

When women are more confident in their abilities to have successful and rewarding births, they are less likely to request Caesarean sections or narcotics for pain.

DONA reviewed seven trials of laborsupport studies and found overall that women assisted by doulas were 26 percent less likely to have C-sections, 28 percent less likely to use any kind of anesthesia, and 33 percent less likely to be dissatisfied with

their birth experience.

The presence and advent of professionally-organized doulas is timely at this particular period in the history of childbirth. Professional doulas are a recent phenomenon, as DONA was only established in 1992, and the profession seems to have sprung from a growing need.

According to a 2008 article in USA Today, the rate of C-sections in 2006 was alarmingly over 31 percent of total births and still on the rise. Among the medically noted benefits of vaginal births, naturallyborn babies are generally healthier and more developed than C-section babies who may not have reached their full gestation period. Furthermore, C-sections are invasive surgeries that require incisions through the mother’s abdomen and uterus, and they present slightly higher risks of complications than vaginal births.

Triangle doulas

Raleigh-area doula Karissa Binkley, who is completing a nonprofit management certificate through Duke University Continuing Studies, recalls how natural births in a woman’s home with a midwife are routine in her native Holland. Binkley attended her first birth experience when she was nine years old, so it was quite a culture shock when she arrived to the U.S. and witnessed a major paradigm shift in birthing practices. Binkley says she came to realize that many women here give in to the fear of pain and elect to go under the knife.

also laments the struggles that first-time parents face when making decisions about birth methods. Dahill, who has volunteered with UNC BirthPartners (a free doula program), especially recommends doulas’ services to women who do not already have the kind of support they need from their partner or family members.

Parents are presented with frightening pictures of birth in the media and suffer from a “lost continuum where women have never been to a birth before.” Cut-off from past societies when birth was a celebrated event, where the intricacies were passed down a matrilineal line, it is small wonder why women are frightened of natural births.

Binkley describes childbirth as a “powerful and empowering experience for women,” an attitude that many modern women are out of touch with. The term doula encompasses much more than a profession, but a lifestyle marked by a dedication to mothers and celebrating the magic of birth.

Professionalization

Binkley stresses that doulas provide their services out of a passion for birthing and childcare. However, with the advent of professional associations such as DONA, the art of being a doula is becoming more confined to a specific role in the process of childbirth. Regional hospitals such as WakeMed and Duke Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Program offer doula training classes, and more and more doulas go through the DONA certification program to add a level of legitimacy to their services. Other certification programs include Aviva Institute, Childbirth and Postpartum Professionals Association (CAPPA), and Birth Arts International.

These programs all stress the separation between doulas and medical assistance.

Physicians and nurses have more expertise in the medical minutia, and doulas are not allowed to give medical advice even as basic as advising a mother to take Tylenol for pain.

Area-hospitals such as the Duke Medical Birthing Center and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill-affiliated NC Women’s Center offer midwives and attending nurses who provide such medical services and manage the actual birth. Midwives are specially trained nurse practitioners that serve in physician-like roles but are dedicated only to childbirth.

Their care in birthing centers is ideal, because traditional obstetricians are trained more in surgical and emergency procedures -- skills that are not needed in most pregnancies.

While certified doulas are limited in their scope regarding the medical aspects of pregnancy, and some of their roles may overlap with those of nurses and midwives, they nonetheless form an integral part of the birthing team as they provide a continual level of care that serves to ease nervous mothers.

Even the most diligent midwives are stretched thin over their numerous patients and many mothers are more comfortable with the kind of individualized and constant attention in which doulas specialize. Doulas also can help facilitate communication between a woman and her medical staff, for example, by checking up on her eating and exercise habits. The interplay of medical staff and birth assistants is often integral to making sure a birth goes as smoothly as possible.

At a recent training session organized

by Tara Owens Shuler for the Lamaze Childbirth Educator Program in North Carolina, which is affiliated with Duke AHEC, doula Marlo Robinson livened up a PowerPoint lecture with amusing stories, demonstrations and a pair of electric blue pumps. Joan Levy, a nurse clinician and educator at the Duke Teer House, quipped that she already essentially provides the services of a doula so she might as well become certified.

Another nurse, already experienced with volunteering at birthing centers, recalled that after she finished college one of the first births she assisted was with her firstyear English teacher. All of the women attending the session, despite being mostly strangers, displayed a comfortable camaraderie as they exchanged jokes about potentially awkward birthing situations and stories about past experiences working in healthcare. The room fostered a general vibe of dedication to comforting women during one of the most important events in their lives.

Passion required

Not all doulas have a medical background, though, and among the nurses at the training session were masseuses, housewives and recent graduates.

UNC-CH alumna Kristin Kennedy defies the notion that all doulas are older women who have had children of their own. A 2009 graduate, Kennedy, cited a passion for helping women in need as a motivator for entering doula training.

It seems like fate sent Kennedy to pursue her interest in becoming a certified doula after a cousin first piqued her curiosity when she gushed about the doula she had during a recent pregnancy. Then a coworker also encouraged her to sign up for 28 RIVAL MAGAZINE • volume 5• issue 4

training, and Kennedy was sold on taking the next steps toward certification.

Already dedicated to pre-natal issues, Kennedy counsels pregnant mothers through the “Access Project” Substance Abuse Program of the Alcohol and Drug Council of North Carolina. Kennedy also worked with abuse victims at a crisis center in Durham, and just as she feels that not having personal history with substance abuse does not hinder her from empathizing, she also thinks that a woman’s personal experience as a mother is not crucial to being an effective doula.

Trust

As long as a doula can provide emotional support, physical comfort and the information women need to make informed decisions, she will be an asset to potential parents.

Dahill is adamant that one of the key aspects of a successful doula is the trust between the doula and the mother. This ensures that the mother is as comfortable as possible, and Binkley even says that she maintains relationships with former clients.

Furthermore, in most birthing situations men are cast aside, but Dahill maintains

that the women’s partners are integral to the trust factor and need to be comforted also.

Doulas help by supporting the partners as they also embrace parenthood and the birthing process.

Because doulas are not as emotionally attached to the birth in their role as a thirdparty, they can help both of the parents cope with intense cycles of emotions that are connected to welcoming an addition to the family.

As Dahill describes, she often acts as an “emotional line to the child” for partners, as it may be a larger jump for them to grapple with these feelings when the child is not physically growing within them.

All in all, doulas provide an experienced hand to guide parents through the process of birthing, from drawing up a birthing plan, going over concerns and tips in prebirth consultations, referring the parents to experts or classes, attending the actual birth, and even guiding the mother through breastfeeding. Another separate postpartum doula exists in a separate role which involves helping out with continued emotional and coping support, feeding advice and household transitioning.

area and the world at large is not expansive enough for the current volume of births, and doulas stress that every woman who wants the help of a doula should have access to it. Just as the doulas-in-training were eager to share their stories, there is a certain sense of connection among doulas that fosters collaboration and a culture of advice-sharing. This is good news for doulas considering that the training to become a doula does not end with certification.

Dahill describes it as a “continual learning process” and notes that even professionals become “more intuitive and more in tune with every birth.” In fact, the real training is “birth itself.” Listening to Dahill speak inspires one to believe that one of the most beneficial aspects of doulas is their emphasis on treasuring the profoundness and beauty of childbirth. Despite a funny name with an old-fashioned connotation, more parentsto-be would vastly benefit from seeking the services and comfort these women provide.

[Athelete’s Corner] for a losing season

I

n 2009-2010, our community was taken by failure. Students had to alter their relationship with Carolina basketball. The love-fest was over and we had to realize our hoops mortality after a legendary five-year run.

Ever since the arrival of Roy Williams, we have become spoiled here at UNC-CH. We’ve had two national championships, five jerseys honored and one retired. If we weren’t winning championships, we were at least competing in the Final Four or Elite Eight. But this year – this year we made the NIT. In my opinion, the NIT banner should not even be displayed in the hallowed Dean Dome rafters. It’s a consolation tournament for the 66 through 97 “best” teams in the country. To make matters even worse, Duke won the ACC. How have UNC-CH students dealt with such an underwhelming season? Well, I’ve created a “comforting hierarchy” that illustrates the feeling around campus this season.

There are three stages of this “comforting” that we have all used on each other during the season.

First, was the Denial Stage. In this stage we brushed off any thoughts of a disappointing season. “It’s just a game,” we said. “There’s a lot more to play.” It started at the loss to the College of Charleston. We had two starters out, we thought. It was just a fluke game. Then came three out of four losses in ACC play. Our record was 12-7.

Still, it was just an unusual string of bad games; the season was not out of hand.

Next, we entered the Unspoken Recognition of Failure stage. We all understood things were getting bad, but we still didn’t want to acknowledge those feelings. The season can still be salvaged, we thought.

This phase began on Jan. 31, at a home game against Virginia. We lost 75-60 and then lost our next three games, ending with a heart-breaking 64-54 loss to Duke. We were now 13-11 (2-7 in ACC play).

This was bad; we would probably have to win all of our remaining games to make the tournament. But, it could happen, we told ourselves.

Finally, we crossed the futility threshold into the Open Recognition of Failure stage.

Here, we were very clear in our understanding that this team was bad. There was little to no false hope left; futility in Carolina Basketball had been realized.

The recognition showed in another threegame losing streak to Georgia Tech, Boston College and Florida State. Now, we were 1414. Carolina was, unthinkably, a .500 team.

At this point, we tried to make ourselves feel better by talking about next year. Harrison Barnes will save us. Reggie Bullock will

finally give us a scorer, and no more Marcus Ginyard and hopefully no Larry Drew, we fantasized. But still, the sense of failure embodied the campus.

Perhaps I could even create a fourth stage – Apathetic Recognition. Once the regular season was over and UNC-CH lost in the first round of the ACC tournament, people just did not care anymore. An invite to the NIT was almost certain, but really we all just wanted the season to be over. We wanted it to die.

Now that basketball season is officially over, the excuses can stop, along with suffering. I offer my eulogy to the 2009-2010 Carolina basketball team: Today in beautiful Chapel Hill, N.C., we come together to put to rest the 2009-2010 Men’s Basketball Team, a team that started out its life so promisingly.

There were victories over Ohio State and Michigan State, and a competitive loss to fellow blue-blood Kentucky. However, those games did nothing but establish false hope in Tar Heel Nation.

For this team was unable to live up to its lofty expectations. It was unable to duplicate the 2005-2006 season. A year when the team was ravaged, at the time, by departures to the NBA, but still remained strong due to impressive first-years like Tyler Hansbrough and confident leaders like David Noel. This year Deon Thompson only continued his renowned inconsistency, and the allegedly high-performing first-years, led by John Henson, all underachieved.

The deceased will not be forgotten, no matter how much it hurt us all. Next year, its memory will remain as a spark to the new Men’s Basketball Team. Its works and virtues will be a guideline on how not to play college basketball.

And just as a wound heals over time, so shall our basketball team, and so shall our community. We may be left with the scar of a failing season, but just like 2001-2002, it will soon fade into oblivion.

‘Ol’ Roy’ may be consistently outcoached, but he can never be out-recruited. So we joyfully put this season to rest, and we look to the future with new hope.

We anxiously await the arrival of the nation’s best high school player and his two five-star teammates.

s of two years ago, the Carolina Ice Synchro synchronized skating team brought together students from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University to skate under one team. But over the years, as team members graduate and membership dwindles, the intercollegiate team has disintegrated, leaving the only UNC-CH student on the 12-person intermediate team and the only Duke student on the nine-person adult team.

Not to say that losing the colligate team has damaged the other levels: the intermediate team qualified to compete at the 2009 U.S. Synchronized Skating National Championships in Portland, Maine. The adult open program has had similar success; the team, with ages ranging from 17-60, won the 2009 Eastern Synchronized Team Skating Sectional Championships.

college where she discovered Synchro through an Internet search of local rinks. “I cannot imagine my -Veronica Butler life without skating, and it’s even better when I’m with my team,” says Butler, an undecided major from Willingham, N.C. Even though the Carolina Ice Syncro team has changed from mainly DukeUNC-CH students to local skaters, there is always time for the students to bond — or bicker — during their semi-annual travels.

“We always try to book everyone on the same flight and same hotel,” Butler says.

“It’s great to have the collective team [both intermediate and adult] traveling together,” adds Dodd.

The collaborative and supportive environment is just what Jamye Gaster, head coach and program director, sought when she started the synchronized skating program in 2001.

“I cannot imagine my life without skating and it’s even better when I’m with my team.”

Dodd started her skating career as a free-style skater, but after an injury in the sixth grade, temporarily moved to hockey. “My mom basically said, ‘No, you’re not going to play hockey,’” says Dodd, a sophomore physics major from Maplewood, N.J. Then she discovered synchronized skating and was immediately enamored. “With Synchro, you have your entire team with you and I love that aspect, it’s why I still skate,” says Dodd.

The passion for skating is a common characteristic for the rival students. A skater since age seven, first-year UNC-CH student Butler has spent most of her life as a skater, including her first two semesters in

“Duke did have a program, but the girls said it was too stressful and time consuming, and it just didn’t work out. I don’t want that to happen here,” says Gaster.

And her mentality seems to be doing the trick. The intermediate team practices on Mondays and Saturdays for an hour and a half and the adult team practices for two hours every Saturday. Gaster creates a friendly environment, allowing girls to continue participating in a sport they love, but it is still serious enough where they can compete nationally.

While Duke has ice-skating as a club sport, the nearest rink is 25 miles away and UNC-CH has no comparable program so the Triangle SportsPlex is the best alternative for student skaters.

A 15- to 20-minute drive from both Duke and UNC-CH, it’s a supportive environment, but still holds the friendly banter you’d expect from Duke-UNC-CH students.

“I’ll ask someone for help on footwork and everyone is friendly about it, but afterwards they’ll always comment about my Duke shirt and during basketball season, it’s basically like, don’t talk to me,” Dodd says.

While no one laments the current dynamic, both the athletes and coaches are looking for new talent. “We’re looking for anyone with a solid skating background.

They don’t have to have done Synchro before,” Gastor says.

For the skaters that love their sport and don’t want to let it fall by the wayside during their college years, the Caroline Ice Syncro team could be just the place. Better yet, a collegiate team could give Duke and UNC-CH something they can both cheer about, so maybe they can still talk during basketball season.

Before he was a Tar Heel, BEN DOSHER helped baby sea turtles find their way to the ocean near his native Southport, N.C. Now the senior biology major and marine sciences minor cares for eight baby loggerheads in UNC-CH’s Lohmann Lab during experiments to better understand these turtles’ relationships with the earth’s magnetism. “A sea turtle leaves the area it’s born and will come back within one kilometer to lay their eggs,” says Dosher. “We know that has something to do with magnetism. Every three or four years the magnetism changes, so we’re trying to figure out how that changes.” He makes sure the turtles are clean and fed, and that their water’s salinity is at a proper level while researchers send magnetic pulses through the water and record the turtles’ responses. In typical student organizations, the highest leadership positions are reserved for seniors.

However, Duke public policy major STEPHEN TEMPLE from Charlotte, N.C., exceeded the expectations of his peers and obtained the presidency of Campus Council as a junior.

The Council focuses on residential policy and campus living, working in four areas: finance, organizing events, facilities and policies. In his second year as president he has worked to uphold residential life standards and enhance Central Campus. “Some cool things we’ve done in terms of policy is creating Duke’s first pets community, called a ‘feline friendly dorm.’ We are getting ready to open a new restaurant on Central Campus as well as a new gym and a few other small buildings,” says Temple. UNC-CH junior JOE DAVY and his company EvoApp may keep a low profile on campus, but readers of the entrepreneur magazine Inc. will recognize him as the face of one of its “Cool College Start-Ups of 2010.” The economics major and Angier, N.C., native worked as an IT consultant at IBM for a year after high school, began his own IT consulting firm and then decided there was an easier way to serve his customers. Davy launched EvoApp in May 2009, which consolidates the software he used in consulting into one package. He dedicates about 12 hours a day to his work, but has found learning how to run a start-up as an entrepreneurship minor helpful. As for the future, Davy is unsure. “I don’t know if this company will still be around by the time I graduate,” he says. “Or if this does well, who knows if I’ll graduate?” By: Elizabeth Lilly, UNC-CH

Duke first-year Casey Edwards kept busy her last semester of high school fighting for stimulus money for public education in South Carolina. The undecided major from Chapin, S.C., sued Governor Mark Sanford in May 2009 in Casey Edwards vs. The State of South Carolina. She started a school sponsorship program in October 2008, for which her high school raised funds to support an under-funded school nearby. “I attended such a wellfunded school while schools nearby were without computer labs…and some without even heating and air conditioning,” says Edwards. Bud Ferillo, the producer and director of “The Corridor of Shame,” the documentary that inspired Edwards’ sponsorship program, noticed her efforts. He put her in contact with Columbia, S.C. laywers Dwight Drake and Dick Harpootlian, who prepared the case pro-bono. The judge ruled in her favor and mandated that Sanford accept the stimulus funds.
