I’m very competetive. And when I say very competetive, I mean that I’m competitve about basically anything (even things that I’m really bad at—like cooking).

Admittedly, this is not the most desirable character trait, but acceptance is the first step towards recovery. At the same time, however, competition forces you to keep growing and to keep improving (see also: the basis of our capitalist adrienne wollman economic system). When I was 12, I lost a bet with her and had to join the cross-country team. My only goal for the season? Not to be slower than her. I hated it at first, but if she could do it, then I could do it. Eventually it grew on me and I ended up running crosscountry with her until we got to UNC-CH. Last year, she started doing CrossFit. Ten months later, I’ve jumped on the bandwagon and the competition has begun. (She’s got a head start, but we both know how this one is going to go...). The list goes on.

And then there’s the classic rivalry between UNC-CH and Duke University which, in addition to being the basis for this publication, lends itself to the betterment of both schools. Beyond just the basketball rivalry (see our two athlete’s corner columnists on page 24 for their thoughts on that), there are also considerations about academics (see By The Book on page 26 for a comparison of the introductory Astronomy classes at both schools) and clubs. The rivalry between the two schools also creates an extraordinary environment for collaboration, as evidenced by existing programs like the Robertson Scholars program and new programs like the Kenan-Biddle Partnership (page 8). For a more intimate look at the rivalry, we spoke wtih the directors of marching percussion—who happen to be married—at both schools (page 12).

And just admit it: a little competition makes life more fun.

essica Breland, a fifth-year senior who missed last year’s basketball season due to undergoing treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma, is back with a vengeance.

“I felt like a kid on Christmas morning,” Breland said. “It was amazing to be back out there with the teammates I consider my sisters and to pick up a sport I love.”

Alongside guards Italee Lucas and Cetera DeGraffenreid, forward Breland completes a senior trio that has propelled the University of North Carolina women’s basketball team to No. 15 in the nation so far this season, boasting a 19-3 mark and a 5-2 conference record.

Averaging a 13.7 points per game, Breland, known as the NCAA’s “Comeback Kid,” still hungers for more.

“At first, I felt there was a lot of pressure on me because I wasn’t shooting as well as I was before I got sick,” she said. “But coach sat me down and told me I was doing a lot of other great things to help the team and I’d fall back into the swing of things soon.”

And she has. In more ways than one.

Not only does Breland boast the team’s only double-double, having 14 points and 11 rebounds, in the first match of the season—her first game in over a year—but she’s also giving back.

The Lineberger Cancer Center, where Breland received her treatment, now has a fund in her name called the “Comeback Kids.”

“She wanted to do something,” said head coach Sylvia Hatchell, now in her 25th season at UNC-CH. “And she wanted to do it for the pediatric ward because she said to me, ‘coach, they’re going to call me the Comeback Kid, but every kid that has cancer is a comeback kid.’”

The entire team looks to Breland as a leader and a source of motivation. Fortunately, the other seniors stepped up when she had to leave for treatment.

“Sometimes you don’t know you’re going to be thrown into a role,” Lucas, a five-foot-eight guard, said. “You just have to accept it, so me and Cetera just stepped up and got it done.”

Lucas is the ACC’s third leading scorer, with an average of 18.2 points per game, and leads the league with her deadly outside shot. DeGraffenreid is one of the most prolific foul shooters in the country, holding the school record for most free throws made (493) after the team’s game against ACC-rival, N.C. State.

“Everything motivates us to do better,” DeGraffenreid said. “Since we’re always to-

gether as a team on and off the court, it helps with the chemistry. Once you know someone’s personality, you know their basketball.”

Degraffenreid insists that her team’s success stems from more than sheer basketball talent. She believes off-court chemistry translates directly to good oncourt communication. “Once you know someone’s personality, you know their basketball,” she said.

Degraffenreid noted that although this on and off-court chemistry is exemplified by the stand-out seniors, the whole team is truly part of it.

“Though we are a senior-led team this year, we have a really good bench,” Hatchell said. “We have 10 players that we can actually play, and we don’t hesitate to move them in and out during most games.”

With at least 10 players getting more than 10 minutes of game time in each contest, the Tar Heels put themselves in an elite club.

“There probably isn’t another school in the country that can say that have that,” Hatchell said. “We’re experienced, we have depth, we’re athletic. The biggest thing now is we’ve just got to develop some consistency.”

Warming Up to the Duke Women’s Basketball Team

f you click on the “Basketball (W)” link on GoDuke. com,the official website of Duke University athletics, you could learn what any sports fan has grown up knowing: the language of sports is numbers.

For instance, the “Headlines” section of the page devoted to the Duke Women’s Basketball Team describes past games with respect to final scores, Duke’s national ranking (3 at time of publication), and statistics like foul shooting percentage. Whenever a player is mentioned, her name is frequently coupled with her contributions towards the team score. These are all practical aspects of sports reporting, but sometimes fans are less concerned about numbers than about the individuals behind those numbers.

Despite the tendency to present athletes as little more than their game statistics, one of the articles in GoDuke’s Headlines section highlighted the team’s commitment to community service. The piece recounted a visit to the Ronald McDonald House on Duke’s campus, where the players had dinner with patients and their families. The team also takes time to visit nearby elementary schools and sponsors a Durham family for Christmas. It is clear these women are as talented in the classroom as they are on the court.

First-year Haley Peters earned a perfect score on the ACT college entrance program and was recognized as a 2010 Presidential Scholar, one of the nation’s highest academic honors for high school students. The entire team works to balance practice and game schedules with academic work, and many upperclassmen are conducting senior research.

Although these women have committed themselves to busy schedules, they know as well as any Duke student that all work and no play (off the court, of course) is not a good combination. Senior guard Karima Christmas and junior guard Kathleen Scheer enjoy making arts and crafts, while sophomore Janeé Johnson (currently recovering from an injury) plays six different instruments and enjoys video games such as Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution.

Now that basketball season is upon us, focusing on the numbers of the game is tempting since wins and losses are what most fans remember. However, learning about the athletes beyond their personal statistics makes their achievements even more impressive. The women are musicians, civil servants, future doctors and students— just like the rest of us.

On game nights, it is rare to find an empty seat at Back Bar, the new addition to Chapel Hill’s quintessential dining spot, Top of the Hill.

Back Bar, which opened in 2010, has already become a top player in Carolina’s nightlife. With six televisions mounted on the walls and around the bar, it would be impossible to miss a shot during a basketball game.

Let’s hope the players follow suit.

Varsity Theater In contrast to years past, students were able to watch the big UNCCH-Duke game this year on the big screen. Varisty Theater hosted the Feb. 9th game, charging $5 in advance and $6 at the door. Events at Varsity during the show included raffles, and a Qdoba burrito-eating contest was the main attraction during half-time.

3Four Corners

Four Corners is the epitome of a great sports bar on Franklin Street. It was designed with sports fans in mind because no matter where you are standing or seated in the room, you can watch the game on at least one of the bar’s 16 high-definition screens.

If you don’t want to leave campus to enjoy the basketball game, a convenient alternative is to grab a group of friends and head to the Student Union. On the Union’s main floor, numerous couches surround a big screen television that broadcasts basketball games. It’s a great opportunity to bond with fellow students and meet new people. Another great on-campus choice is to cheer on the Tar Heels in a dorm common room. Dorms frequently organize viewing parties on game nights and provide free pizza or other snacks for students. With the temptation of free food and convenience, there is no excuse for missing a Tar Heel basketball game.

espite a history of enmity and notorious rivalry, not the least embodied by the thunderous chanting of “go to hell Carolina!” in K-ville, students at Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are channeling new resources into projects that are mutually beneficial with the announcement of the new KenanBiddle Partnership. The Partnership funds 10 inter-institutional projects with a $5,000 grant each, in hopes that the projects will enhance or create new collaborations between the two universities.

Two local charitable organizations with ties to both schools, the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation and the William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust, provide the base funding for the Partnership. In what sounds like a recipe for inspiration (or good PR), the two philanthropic titans with names that resonate throughout Tobacco Road combine with two world-class universities, who despite being bitter sports enemies, are now shaking hands to provide their students with opportunities to improve communities together.

Beyond the lawns of K-ville and the walls of the Dean Dome, however, relations between the students of Duke and

UNC-CH are amiable. In the decade since the Robertson Scholars Program started in 2000, a number of collaborative projects have brought the two schools into friendlier contact. Aside from supporting students with scholarships, the Robertson Scholars Program also runs the Robertson Express bus, which facilitates travel in between the two campuses. The bus aims to help students, staff and faculty attend events and activities at each other’s campuses.

The third part of the Robertson Scholars Program triad was the Collaboration Fund, a now-defunct program that also provided grants of up to $5,000 for projects initiated by groups of students or faculty with ties to both universities. Though the Collaboration Fund disbursed its last grants in the 2009-2010 funding cycle, the program paved the way for many lasting contributions, including this very magazine. Dr. Erin Mlyn, former director of the Robertson Scholars Program and current director of Duke Engage, described the intent of the Collaboration Fund as to “put people on the Robertson Bus and bring them back and forth both literally and figuratively.”

The spirit of the Partnership is similar to the Collaboration fund, and the designs of the two grants bear a striking resem-

blance. Administrators, however, insisted that the idea behind the Partnership was generated independently, and that the termination of the Collaboration Fund is unrelated to the initiation of this new, similar grant.

Regardless of origin, the idea for the Partnership grew out of a joint effort, much like the ones it hoped to start. Together the universities and funding organizations developed a framework that everyone agreed on, as all four parties had a say in outlining details and presented ideas to bounce back and forth. The Partnership marks the first joint project between the two charitable organizations, although the trustees of both have considered a collaborative project on a student level for a while, according to Douglas Zinn, director of the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation.

“It was time to do something tangible for the student’s benefit and both funding sources agreed,” said Zinn.

The funding organizations have agreed to provide $150,000 total, enough for three funding cycles. Each project is ideally student-initiated and has stakeholders on both campuses, but the Partnership’s call for proposals is deliberately unencumbered by many requirements to maximize February 2011 • RIVAL MAGAZINE 11

creativity and ambition.

One major requirement, however, is a capstone presentation or performance that summarizes the work of the project at the end of the grant period. Despite flexible guidelines for the types of projects that can be funded, the application process and screening is quite rigorous. Proposals include multiple sections explaining the proposed activities and team member qualifications, with a suggested maximum length of 10 pages. In comparison, the Robertson Collaboration Fund required an abstract and description, totaling 950 words combined.

At the same time, the tough exterior of the Partnership shields the program from some of the internal maladies of the Collaboration Fund. Mlyn started the Fund when he was the director of the Scholars Program, but admits that there were weaknesses that were made apparent as the funding cycles went on. The biggest barrier to collaboration was that it sometimes ended up being a forced collaboration or that it was exaggerated for the purpose of the application. In some instances, “there weren’t strong partners on both campuses, which led to unilateral effort with one campus doing bulk of the work,” said Mlyn. To combat this, proposals for the Partnership require specifics detailing the responsibilities of each team member.

The strength and enthusiasm of the Collaboration Fund applicants also diminished as the years went on, evidenced by the steady decrease in the number of applicants. In the span of one year, for example, the number declined by nearly half from 66 in 2003 to 39 in 2004. The Partnership hopes to avoid these pitfalls by programming more accountability into the application itself.

As a result, the Partnership had received no applications one week prior to the November 15, 2010 deadline, as reported by the Daily Tar Heel. Since the grant was announced in early October, groups hardly had time to design a project and submit such an involved application.

With the deadline extended to November 22, the number of applications shot up to 91, a figure that pleased the key players in the grant.

“The numbers are quite fabulous,” said Zinn, emphasizing that the co-chairs of the program are very excited to see the outcome.

One project in particular is about celebration. “Primate Palooza” is a week-long event dedicated to primate conservation and research, and is centered on a talk given by the legendary researcher Jane Goodall at Duke near the end of March. The grant recipient, Duke/UNC-CH Roots and Shoots, is a collaborative group devoted to protecting primates and raising awareness among the public. Megan Morikawa, a junior Program II major at Duke, started this chapter of the internationally-recognized organization in her new home with the help of Chase Pickering, a senior journalism major from UNC-CH and Aaron Sandel, a 2010 Duke alumni. This year’s event will be the second annual and the group’s ambitions have soared, with plans for four main events scattered across the week.

Morikawa is also drawn to collaboration among fields of study, as evidenced by her efforts to make the event as interdisciplinary as possible so that everyone is interested and able to participate. Duke/ UNC-CH Roots and Shoots will coordinate with the visual studies departments of both universities in a “conservation is art” competition, where students submit art that is related to environmental issues for prizes. Performing arts are also in the mix, as dance and music groups will perform pieces from around the world and with conservation as a theme. In the “conservation toolkit panel series,” professors and other unaffiliated people will lead academic-oriented discussions that aim to provide audiences with specific strategies for conservation. The topics range from geographic information system (GIS), to economics,

public policy, global health and even the media. The fourth pillar of the event is “On the Edge,” a public service announcement campaign with the national office that aims to interest youth in conservation by calling on them to create short documentaries focused on endangered species.

Another Duke and UNC-CH collaboration that will be enhanced by the new Partnership is the Triangle University Food Studies (TUFS), a forum developed by Alice Ammerman, a professor at the UNCCH Department of Nutrition, and Charlie Thompson, the director of Duke Center for Documentary Studies. TUFS fills a void of academic discussion about sustainable food choices in an otherwise vibrant scholarly community, as Anna Child, a first-year master student in the UNC-CH School of Public Health, explains.

“Students were interested in these issues, and faculty are doing work on these issues, but there is no main forum to find out what people are doing,” said Child.

Thus, TUFS was born. At each monthly meeting, a faculty member presents about his or her work on food and opens up a dialogue. Part of the discussion involves eating a meal together that is made with as much local, sustainable ingredients as possible, assuring that the group “practices what they preach,” added Child. The funding from the Partnership will support smaller projects conducted by students involved in TUFS, ideally involving the larger Triangle community and working against barriers to food access, costs and cooking.

Administrators and the organizers eagerly broadcast their hopes for the Part-

nership, but ultimately the best PR should be reserved for the deserving students and faculty coordinators of the individual projects. UNC-CH chancellor Holden Thorp stated in a press-release that “the vision for encouraging students to develop innovative projects is brilliant.”

Although the idea is worthy, it is not entirely new despite vehement protestations to the contrary. The truly brilliant aspects of the Partnership will be the collaborative projects themselves. The students and faculty in the first winning round clearly demonstrate the benefits that result from putting down the insults, and leaning on each others’ strength.

att Savage, the director of marching percussion at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been happily married for two years. His wife, Amy Savage, happens to work only a few miles down the road as Duke University’s director of marching percussion. Clearly, their personal and professional lives are a bit of a love-hate relationship, just as you could say the Duke and UNC-CH rivalry is a bit of a love-hate relationship. When basketball season comes around, the two schools love to hate one another.

But despite the rivalry, it is plain to see that friendships and relationships sprout between members of both communities.

When asked about their relationship, the percussion directors say that it makes for a great conversation piece.

“Growing up a huge tarheel fan with plenty of hate towards ‘that other school’, I consider the rivalry to be the biggest of college sports and one of the biggest of all sports,” said Kuntal Shaw, the UNCCH drum line captain and junior from Cary, NC. “The Savages’ being married provides an interesting tie between the two schools.”

Regarding the validity behind any personal rivalry, Matt Savage said “there isn’t really a rivalry between the two of us. But we like to tease each other about it.”

Once their relationship began, Amy Savage moved to North Carolina from Indiana, where she worked as a high school percussion specialist. Two years later, the couple got married. The Savages currently reside in Chatham County.

Matt Savage moved to Chapel Hill in 1990. He began as UNC-CH’s part-time assistant band director and then became the assistant band director. Matt resigned shortly after the promotion to focus more on his true passion: percussion.

Coincidentally, Amy’s passion is also percussion. She is a Yamaha Performing Artist and an educator. “Similar interests help in a marriage,” Amy said. “We have many of the same friends because we’re in the same industry. It helps when we have to travel because we both know what each other is doing and what they’re working on,” said Matt.

Amy added that athough the two schools are rivals, students from both places travel between insitutions for music purposes.

The couple explained that the two drum lines share musical interests but perform in different styles. To them, comparing the two groups is like comparing apples and oranges.

Rather than compete against one another, the two drum lines work together. The UNC-CH and Duke drum lines

have collaborated several times in recent years. The most recent collaboration took place at a basketball fundraising marathon.

“After performing together, the two groups went out to dinner together after the fundraiser,” said Matt Savage. “We use the rivalry in a different way. By advertising the lines drumming together, it creates a different draw.”

“I think the rivalry can be a great motivation for improvement and just plain fun as long as it is not taken too far,” said Duke senior Benstone Schwartz from Stanford, Fla. Both Savages’ observe differences in the sense of rivalry between the two groups of students: Duke students are more verbal about the rivalry and sometimes “more rabid with their language,” said Matt Savage.

“I was a UNC-CH fan for a while,” said Amy Savage, “but meeting the kids and becoming personal with the school made me into a Duke fan.”

Matt cheers vehemently for UNC-CH sports and against Duke sports and Amy cheers for Duke. She will, however, occasionally cheer for UNC-CH—when it does not affect Duke’s standing.

“We like the standing joke; me teaching at Duke and Matt at UNC,” said Amy Savage. But the directors both agree that they wouldn’t mind seeing the two groups working together and collaborating on more projects in the future.

“I think it would be really great to get the

music and share the same interests,” said Amy Savage.

The drum lines share warm-ups and cadences. The couple co-wrote the cadence “Friction” which Duke still uses. The Duke drum line also plays some other cadences that Matt has written.

The groups also have many common sponsors. The Sabian Cymbol Co., REMO Drum Co. and Yamaha Drums help to support the percussion departments at Duke and at UNC-CH. Additionally, both drum Lines use Pro Mark Drumstick Company’s “Matt Savage Model” of drumstick, specially designed by Matt Savage.

“Matt’s influence is one that constantly pushes us to excel on our instruments. He writes music that is challenging, fun to play and hopefully fun to listen to,” said

over the last few years and she is a very talented percussionist.”

The drum lines are busiest in the fall.

Matt directs a fall camp for UNC-CH before the start of each semester. The presemester camp entails auditions, warmups and learning the pre-game cadences.

The group performs a different show each game and Matt Savage writes the music for each show and teaches it.

In addition to serving as drum line director, Amy Savage also teaches at Northwood high school in the fall, while Matt Savage teaches at Broughton high school.

Matt and Amy also work together to direct a week-long marching percussion band camp each summer. The camp is for high school students, and both Duke and UNCCH students serve as teachers and counselors. They use drums from both universities for the camp.

“A lot of people like to treat marching band like a sport, and I’m not really a fan of that. I think that when you compete in music, you sort of miss the point,” said Duke junior Steven Schlaseman from Falls Church, Va. Although the average Duke or UNC-CH fan is repulsed at the mention of his rival school, the Savages prove that opposites, even in the most contentious situations, can attract.

his past year I had the privilege of celebrating two national championships—our very own Duke basketball and Auburn football, my hometown team. Considering that these are the only two sports teams that make me care about athletics, I fared pretty well as a fan. But what credit can I take for championships won by athletes and coaches I have never met?

When a team wins a championship, everyone celebrates. Duke’s bench bonfire burned deep into the night of April 6, 2010, emptying the dorms as every student rushed onto main quad. People I had never seen before were hugging me and running around with painted faces. Every so often, the crowd parted to allow a bench-carrying army through to the bonfire. Like the growing flames, our spirits danced brightly in the night.

In Auburn we have a slightly different celebration ritual (jubilant fans cover a historic tree downtown on Toomer’s Corner in toilet paper), but the general euphoria in Auburn was similar to the April 6th celebration on Duke’s quad when the Auburn Tigers beat Oregon to claim the 2010 Bowl Championship Series victory. As the crowd gathered at Toomer’s Corner, fans ran down the streets screaming our battle cry—“War Eagle!”—and hugging me as they passed. Everyone brought a roll of toilet paper and soon the great tree was covered in white garlands. For the second time in a year, I was filled with the pride

that comes with reigning triumphant on the national sports stage.

Unfortunately, every tide of elation reaches its breaking point. My celebration high wore off when Duke’s traditional ritual of burning the benches clashed with an artist’s devotion to his work. After almost every bench on campus had been heaved into the flames, a band of victorious students hoisted the Crowell Quad bench into the air and headed towards the flames.

to rise. Hugs turned into shoves and the cheers turned to aggressive yelling. The moment of glory had been sweet, yet fleeting.

In the eighteen years that I lived near Toomer’s Corner, I never once attended an Auburn football game. I only became an Auburn football fan when I left for college.

After responding to the obligatory “Where are you from?” over and over again, I began to realize the integral role that Auburn plays in my life. Despite my poor football attendance, I am still from Auburn and Auburn is part of who I am.

From my stance as a slightly removed fan, I often ask: why do we get so excited about our sports team’s victories when anyone can claim allegiance to the team? A victory has no tangible effect on our lives. Even though fandom is physically a spectator activity, passion for a particularly team can ultimately become an active pursuit.

Spectators rarely watch alone. We value the alleged connection to ‘our’ team and ‘our’ players, but mostly we enjoy the people who are ours. Our families, friends and even friendly strangers make watching sports memorable and enjoyable.

These celebrations build community and the rituals unite us in a common culture— even if the culture worships large wooden benches or an old toilet paper-covered tree.

Every Duke student who paints a bench knows that the bench will one day be burned. Nevertheless, the look of loss on the artist’s face dissolved my festive spirit.

A similar breaking point occurred at the Auburn Toomer’s Corner celebration when the crowd reached an unmanageable size.

Reinventing the Hallmark Holiday

A

fter spending hours dumping glitter onto a shoebox to make the best Valentine’s mailbox in my first-grade class, I asked my first true love out on Valentine’s Day. Apparently the shoebox wasn’t impressive enough; he told me he wasn’t “ready for a relationship.”

The next day I found him sharing his crayons with the girl who I let borrow my Barney raincoat the day before. Everything I had planned for us—holding hands on the playground, sharing our Crayola 64-pack, swapping pudding at lunch—was gone right before recess.

From that moment on, I think that I had as bad of luck in the relationship field as Jenniffer Aniston (sans the beauty, money and Brad Pitt). So every year, on the day dedicated solely to broadcasting success in the realm of dating, I morph into an angsty teenage rebel, fighting the sociallyconstucted day of hyper-entitlement and trivial tokens of affection. Valentine’s Day is a Suckfest.

I could rant on about how you don’t need a commercial holiday to validate your love or make yourself (or anyone else) feel loved, but that’s a clichéd argument. A friend once said to me about New Year’s Eve, “Why should I go out on amateur night? I have 364 other days of the year to drink.” If you feel the need to show genuine love and happiness just once a year, then perhaps you need to re-evaluate your relationship.

My perspective regarding Valentine’s Day changed on Feb. 14, 2004 when Mrs. Staley, a close family friend, lost her hardfought battle to breast cancer. She was like a second mom to me. As I was dragged

around basketball tournaments following my brother and her son, she was always there, making sure that I didn’t get left behind at games. Her pride for her wonderful three sons was extremely evident, but at the same time she used to do my hair in the mornings and tell me how much she loved having a ‘daughter’.

Mrs. Staley had an uncanny knack for making me feel important and extraordinary despite my obvious lack of athletic and social skills. Her encouraging words and warm embraces were always welcoming and greatly needed after spending countless hours bored in a gym, watching my brother play basketball. As we cheered at the basketball games, Mrs. Staley always made sure that I always knew she was on my team. She was my biggest cheerleader and remains so to this day. Without her, I would have been lost in an empty gym, unsure of my own direction and sense of self. She is the reason I am the woman I am today. I hope I have made her proud.

I had hated this holiday for rubbing the fact that I was ‘forever alone’ in my face. But her death made me realize that I have never been alone. She was always there for me and always will be. I regret not grabbing every opportunity I had to let Mrs. Staley know how much I appreciated her.

For me, Valentine’s Day is no longer a time to vomit at lovers or send Valentinegrams to yourself. (Who would do that?)

It’s a time to remember the people in my life who I want to make proud. I can’t be angry at the thousands of dollars spent on plastic, meaningless gifts anymore. Even if I was in a relationship (did I just hear you

laugh?), I couldn’t pretend that the day was about showing love with impersonal gifts.

Valentine’s Day is a day of love. It’s a day to show people in your life who have made an impact how much you care about them.

Now every February, I think of Mrs. Staley and for weeks, I honor her with beautiful blooms of memories. How’s that for loving somebody? Real love does not need a commercial holiday. Save your money. Don’t rely on Hallmark cards and Reese’s hearts to show your love for someone once a year; show them everyday with genuine care.

And for those that you can’t tell anymore, do the next best thing—remember them.

For me, Valentine’s Day is no longer a time to vomit at lovers or send Valentine-grams to yourself.

On the surface, the coaching staffs of the Duke and UNC-CH men’s basketball teams seem as disparate as the schools they represent.

However, despite superficial differences, the coaches are more alike than you would think.

he University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University have both created a unique basketball culture. As a result of fans’ taunting chants that reverberate through Cameron Indoor Stadium and the Dean Dome, in addition to hours spent waiting for games, both programs have garnered nation-wide recognition for their students’ dedication.

When you think of ‘basketball culture’, the mental image is usually of screaming fans, national title banners or the winning shot. Despite these glorified parts of the game, our basketball programs could not command such social presence and cultural significance without their coaching staffs. Although both schools have created a highly competetive basketball environment, each program’s coaching staff was constructed very differently.

Duke men’s basketball is an ‘all in the family’ kind of program: most of Duke’s assistant coaches are former Duke players who now participate from a different place on the court. UNC-CH, however, employs coaches from various playing and coaching backgrounds. Critics might jump to nepotism as the root of Duke’s coaching logic or question why UNC-CH’s bench doesn’t stock more alumni.

Despite surface-level differences, the two basketball coaching staffs are more alike than their fans may think.

History: Williams served as an assistant to coach Dean Smith in 1978 at UNC-CH. Although Williams left to serve as an assistant coach at the University of Kansas from 1988 to 2003, he eventually returned to be the head coach at UNC-CH in 2003.

Three of Duke’s four assistant coaches played Duke basketball under Mike Krzyzewski. Though they share Duke as an alma mater, they all came to coach at Duke in unique ways.

“They didn’t come straight from the bench. They had experience outside of Duke and they were the right fit for the team,” said Chris Spatola, Duke’s Director of Basketball Operations. Spatola is a U.S. Military Academy graduate and is also Krzyzewski’s son-in-law. He is married to Krzyzewski’s younger daughter, Jamie.

Perhaps Duke’s successful secret really is all in the family.

History: Krzyzewski has served as the head coach at Duke for 31 years. During his time at Duke, Coach Krzyzewski has led the Blue Devils to 4 NCAA Championships, 11 Final Fours (tied for second most in history), 12 ACC regular season titles and 12 ACC Championships. From 1969 to 1974, Krzyzewski served in the Army and directed service teams for three years, and then served the next two years as head coach of the U.S. Military Academy Prep School at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.

Steve Wojciechowski

Steve Wojciechowski is an associate head coach for the Duke men’s basketball team.

He graduated from Duke in 1998. “Wojo” is a member of the USA Basketball College Selection Committee and has served as a coach at Pete Newell’s Big Man Camp. He has also assisted the U.S. National Team since 2005 alongside Coach Krzyzewski.

Chris Collins

Chris Collins graduated from Duke in 1996. The All-ACC guard played professionally in Europe and then served as an assistant coach for both the WNBA’s Detroit Shock and Seton Hall and has helped the U.S. National Team with on-court duties as well as game preparation since 2006.

Nate James

Following his basketball career at Duke, Nate James, assistant coach of Duke men’s basketball team, played professionally in the United States and overseas from 2002-2007.

After being named the Carolinas Basketball League Most Valuable Player in 2003, James spent various parts of the next five seasons playing in 11 countries (Bosnia, Brazil, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Philippines, Poland and Russia). During his time in the NBA, he trained with the Philadelphia 76ers during its training camp in 2004. James, a Washington, D.C. native, broke into the collegiate basketball coaching ranks after serving for one season as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Duke.

Chris Carrawell

Chris Carrawell, the graduate assistant/ head team manager of the men’s basketball team, graduated from Duke in 2000. He was a second round draft pick by the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs but he was waived in 2001. Carrawell played overseas after graduating from Duke. He last played in Holland in 2007, where his team finished second after losing in the European championship finals.

Steve Robinson

Steve Robinson was the head coach at the University of Tulsa for two years (from 1995 to 1997) and at Florida State University for five years (from 1997 to 2002) before joining Williams at UNC-CH in 1988.

One of the nation’s top recruiters and a former head coach, Robinson is currently in his seventh year as an assistant coach at UNC-CH and his 15th as a member of Williams’ coaching staff.

Assistant coach C.B. McGrath is in his seventh year at North Carolina and his 11th season as a member of Williams’ basketball staff. McGrath played point guard for Williams at the University of Kansas.

He was a team captain at the University of Kansas during the 1997-1998 season and lettered in four seasons and became a coach under Williams for Kansas.

Jerod Haase

Jerod Haase is in his seventh year with Williams as an assistant coach. While a shooting guard at the University of Kansas, Haase was nominated for the Naismith and Wooden Award, which is awarded to the most outstanding annual player.

Haase is in his 11th season as a member of Williams’ staff. After a brief time playing overseas in Macedonia, Haase found an opening on Williams’ staff at Kansas.

There, he reunited with the man he calls “the best in the business.”

Although both universities’ coaching staffs are different, they share a common factor: extreme loyalty to the head coach. While they are not UNC-CH alumni, UNC-CH’s coaching staff were no strangers to Williams; many either followed Williams from his head coaching position at the University of Kansas, or played under him while he was a coach.

Playing under a coach develops both a level of comfort and a level of trust that is hard to leave or replace.

“Without looking at direct stats, I’d say that 95 percent of the time, at least some staff will move with a coach,” said Steve Kirschner, UNC-CH’s associate athletic director.

Assistant coaches’ loyalty and trust are not unreciprocated by Krzyzewski and Williams. Williams illustrated the sport’s meaningful relationships when he left his players at the University of Kansas.

“Other than the death or serious injury to my family members, I’ve never had more difficulty than…when I told those 13 young men I was leaving,” Williams said in a 2003 CarolinaBlue interview.

Krzyzewski echoed these sentiments on the Official Coach K media website.

“In leadership, there are no words more important than trust. In any organization, trust must be developed among every member of the team if success is going to be achieved,” he said.

Assistant coaches who have played under a head coach understand trust and success. They also know how to instill these expectations in players.

The Duke coaches have intimate knowledge of Krzyzewski’s demands and of the student-athlete experience at Duke. Duke student basketball manager John McGinty, a sophomore public policy major from Pittsburgh, PA, sees the unity behind the approach.

“The culture is the same from players to coaches. The coaches know the goals and how to help the players meet those goals.

There’s no shift in tone,” said McGinty. “It might seem a little like nepotism, but it is practical. The coaches have different experience through playing overseas and their time away from Duke, and it’s easier to manage with people you already know and trust.”

Though the coach recruiting process differs at each school, both progams revolve around team loyalty and high standards. Assistant coaches at both schools know their head coaches as employers and as personal coaches. With that relationship comes a trust and comfort that transcends our school’s branded names and reveals a bond that makes our connection stronger.

Breadth of it

India is a land of extremes: its people are rich and poor, its places are dust-filled and dazzling. Learn how a foreigner finds her place in the chaos, one culture shock at a time.

T

he two faces of India passed by my train window, each of them moving in time with the rhythmic bumps of the wheels hitting the track.

While the sunrise reflected off the glass, gigantic palaces and lavish architectural constructs ambled by in the distance, giving solid proof of India’s deep-seated history.

Amid this vision of luxury, an elderly, mudsplattered woman bent down and scavenged through the trash-ridden bottles littering the ground. In these moments, I am the foreigner; I am the watching outsider.

India is a country of extremes, where the gaps of inequality punch you in the face and keep coming back for more. The povertystricken slums filled with starving children contrast starkly with the extravagance of tourist resorts that offer unlimited samosas and chipati. For the first half of this semester, I am based in Udaipur within India’s central state of Rajasthan, as part of Duke’s newly formed Global Semester Abroad (GSA): India + China. Midway through the semester, I will switch my home to Beijing. As I take courses on development, health and the environment, I will be working with community non-governmental organization partners in both countries, implementing classroom concepts of policy and research into real-world practice. In India, I am working with Jagran Jan Vikas Samiti, investigating traditional medicine.

After hearing and learning about India and China as rising economic powers, I hope to investigate the truths behind the bold assumptions of both countries, as they are surely pivotal in determining what the future holds for the world at large. Although India has been lauded as a land of great potential success, it is the divide between the very poor and the very rich that captivates my

attention. As I conduct fieldwork research focusing on access to formal and informal institutions of health care in villages in Udaipur, I am excited to learn about one extreme of the spectrum firsthand.

The dust-filled air and honking mopeds lend a definite charm to India. The country’s vibrant culture and welcoming people are unforgettable. Seeing elephants, camels and cows sauntering through the streets is commonplace, and playing cricket until the sun sets is a must. My tongue will be forever marked by India’s exotic spices and I have finally grown comfortable with the Indian method of showering and rickshaw hailing.

The best part of it all is that this journey has only just begun. Although some might

consider the lifestyle here in India chaotic, I would like to view such happenings as exciting and full of surprises. I am only beginning to deepen my understanding of the challenges and triumphs that this diverse region faces.

Standing on the roof of my current home for the half-semester, sipping chai from a tin cup, I watch as my host dad teaches my six-year-old Indian brother how to fly his handmade kite. Within moments, the kite is picked up by the wind and soars against the setting Udaipur sun. I turn to my host brother as he squeals in excitement, and I smile back at him. He hands me the kite string, and I give it a go. It is in these moments that I am the outsider no longer.

Chandos Culleen is a senior American Indian Studies and history major from UNC-CH.

Laurel Burk is a sophomore English major from Duke.

She is also a member of Duke’s student athletics club, The Inferno.

Chandos Culleen: I was a member of Carolina Fever (our campus fan group) my freshman year and went to every home basketball and football game my freshman year. In fact, the only home football game that I’ve ever missed was when I was studying abroad in Australia. I grew up hating DOOK as a Maryland fan and found it really easy to transfer that hate once I got accepted to UNC-CH. Laurel Burk: I’ve lived in Durham since I was two and was raised by two Duke alums. My family had basketball season tickets until I was in middle school, so I grew up watching Duke greats like Trajan Langdon and Jason Williams play in Cameron. I am tenting for the first time this year, and on my undergraduate application to UNC-CH my login password was godevils1. I couldn’t even bring myself to finish the application.

Chandos: So what had you planned on asking?

Laurel: I was planning on asking obnoxious questions. Is that cool with you?

Chandos: Okay, but be prepared to be defeated by state-school logic.

Laurel: So what’s up with UNC-CH the past year and a half? Are you guys still a basketball school?

Chandos: I wouldn’t exactly call a 6-1 conference record and a 16-5 overall record ‘not being a basketball school’.

Laurel: But you have to admit that your record isn’t exactly par for the course by

traditional Duke and UNC-CH standards.

Chandos: Well, for sure it’s not what one would expect from a five-time NCAA champion, especially last year. But at the same time, we were an incredibly young and inexperienced team last year.

Laurel: Shouldn’t good coaching being able to compensate? Or at least prevent you from missing the NCAA tournament?

Chandos: I don’t think you’ll find anybody at UNC-CH who would say that missing the NCAA tournament wasn’t a huge disappointment. But at the same time, you can’t call into question Roy’s coaching when he’s sporting two title rings.

Laurel: Implying that you doubly can’t question a coach with four of them.

Chandos: Well I wouldn’t question Coach K’s ability to coach, but I might ask if he’s cut a deal with the Devil.

Laurel: The Blue Devil.

Chandos: But seriously, how does he get that many charges called in his favor?

Laurel: By teaching his team how to take them.

Chandos: And while Coach K might be a good coach, where’s the productivity before him?

Laurel: You seriously want to go back 31 years, before both of us were born, and argue the merits of our respective basketball programs at the time when my parents went here? Is the present that painful?

Chandos: I’m just pointing out the extensive history of awesomeness that is UNC-CH compared to the more limited history of Duke. But we can move on to the contemporary if you’d like. How do you think you guys will match up with us this year?

Laurel: I think Zeller will have an O.K. game against us. I’m not going to pretend that the Plumlees are our strong points.

But even without Kyrie, we will blow you up in the backcourt. Plus our star seniors will be amped up for their last real rivalry game in Cameron.

Chandos: But our front court isn’t just Zeller— it’s Henson and Knox too. Do you really think that you guys can contain all three?

Laurel: I don’t think it matters as much as you seem to think that it does. Trading three’s for two’s, we still win.

Chandos: What happens if you have a bad shooting night like you did against FSU? Laurel: I’m glad that game happened. It pointed out some of our weaknesses, so we can improve on them. But do you remember the State game last year? It was the same sort of ugly conference road loss. And did our season suddenly collapse? The Plumlees aren’t worthless. Mason had 25 and 12 against Marquette earlier in the year.

Chandos: I still think you guys have shown yourselves to be a two-man team. Dawkins is a good player, but if you can shut down Singler and Smith, what’s left?

Laurel: Our two-man team is 19-2. Apparently there isn’t a standard formula to shut down Singler and Smith. Curry and Dawkins combine for a third scorer.

Chandos: Your two-man team is 19-2 against 2 ranked teams and Butler.

Laurel: And, hey, those ranked teams were both top 6. Our strength of schedule would look a little better if the rest of the ACC had stepped it up in non-conference play, rather than dropping games to the likes of Minnesota.

Laurel: Realistically, where do you think your season is headed?

Chandos: I think we’re a tournament team without a doubt. While I was really disappointed in our team early in the season, I think they’ve matured a lot and are playing with each other much better. Our loss against Georgia Tech was a setback for sure, but other than that we’ve been playing really well since our loss to Illinois.

Laurel: If I’m the selection committee, I’m asking who you’ve beaten besides Kentucky. Duke is the only ranked team left on your schedule. Are you feeling the pressure for the Feb.

9th match-up?

Chandos: When is there ever not pressure for the Duke game? Obviously this year there’s a little more since Duke is the last ranked team we’ve got on the schedule, but I think we’ll split this year.

Laurel: We’ll see about that. Regardless of the outcome, I know I’ll be in Cameron for the home game here. How do you feel about UNC-CH’s lottery system? Seems a little more random than fair to me.

Chandos: But how else would you distribute tickets to 17,000 undergraduates?

Laurel: We get the Crazies by putting 6,300 undergrads through a filter of wind, weather, cold and downright dedication called K-Ville. Imagine what would happen if that process were extended to a student body your size.

Chandos: Sure, but it’s just impossible. I mean I wish we could tent, but it’s not safe for that many people to tent. And we do pack a 22,000 person punch—something you guys can’t match.

Laurel: We’ll see which environment wins out in February and March.

Chandos: It’ll probably be the environment with the five national championship banners hanging from it.

Laurel: You mean ours? In April?

Chandos: I mean ours, in March, a month which has had our name associated it with it longer than yours.

Laurel: May the best team win. And we both know which one that is.

Chandos: It’s surprising that even with that great education you get at that school down the road, they can’t teach you how to recognize quality basketball. Good luck this season.

Laurel: Same to you.

Chris Brown, a sophomore economics major from Potomac, Md. is the vice president for Athletics and Campus Services of Duke Student Government at Duke University. Brown oversees campus recreation programs, Duke University athletics and campus services such as the University’s transit system. He has taken steps towards improving Duke’s aging bus fleet by ordering two new buses for the transit system. Funding for University transportation has been challenging because Duke is privately funded and does not operate on a public bus system. Brown’s initiative through Duke Student Government has provided a starting point for making the system more up-to-date and environmentally friendly. Brown views his experience with Duke Student Government as a valuable way of contributing to the University and fellow students. “It was something I found as a way to make a tangible difference in the everyday lives of my peers, and that’s why I love it,” said Brown.

Brandon Finch, president of the Carolina Athletic Association (CAA) at UNC-CH, is a senior health policy and management major from Apex, NC. The CAA represents students in athletic affairs and serves as a liaison between the student body and the university’s athletic department. As president, Finch oversees 10 cabinet members and more than 80 committee members in developing events and policies such as RAMpage Homecoming Week, Beat Dook Week, Late Night With Roy and men’s basketball ticket distribution. In addition to changing the ticket distribution, the CAA has helped raise $5,000 for UNCCH Dance Marathon through Homecoming T-shirt sales. “I wanted to be involved with Carolina athletics in some capacity, and CAA proved to be the perfect avenue not only to share my love for our sports teams, but also to use my leadership to transform CAA into a valuable resource for students,” said Finch.

Allie Speidel, a senior biomedical engineering major at Duke University from Syracuse, NY. is among 31 individuals recently awarded the Marshall Scholarship. The scholarship allows recipients to study at the graduate level for up to two years in the United Kingdom. As a Marshall Scholar, Speidel will research the regeneration of dead heart tissue while pursuing two one-year masters degrees in Biomedical Research and Translational Medicine at Imperial College London. During her time at Duke, Speidel has combined her love for engineering, medicine and athletics through her involvement in the Collegiate Athlete Pre-Medical Experience Program (CAPE). She was eligible for CAPE because she is an athlete on the Women’s Swimming and Diving Team. CAPE exposes female varsity athletes to clinical settings in the medical profession. Through CAPE, Speidel has developed an understanding of effective physicianpatient relationships, which will serve her well in her research and future career.

In November 2010, a new planet was discovered outside of the Milky Way Galaxy. This was a monumental discovery because no planet has previously been discovered outside of our galaxy.

This new planet, which orbits around a star called HIP 13044, completes its full rotation of the star in 16 days (a feat which was once considered impossible). The discovery of the planet also reveals a lot about HIP 13044: scientists have begun comparing this star to our sun and are hoping to learn where our galaxy is headed.

Justin Tyler, a senior communications studies major from Valdese, NC. is the senior class vice president at UNC-CH. Tyler oversees the senior class marshals, an organization sponsored by the General Alumni Association that seeks to connect seniors through social events and service opportunities prior to graduation. The organization also encourages seniors to donate to the Senior Campaign, which has taken the place of the senior gift as a means of giving back to the University. As vice president, Tyler has had the opportunity to build new friendships with fellow seniors and to simultaneously share his love for UNC-CH. “I was infatuated with Carolina as soon as I stepped foot here,” Tyler said. “I wanted all of my friends and peers to feel the same about Carolina and to enjoy their last year here.”
