SURVEILLANCE OF FASTIDIOUS BACTERIAL PATHOGENS CAUSING RESPIRATORY AND INVASIVE INFECTIONS IN THE PHILIPPINES: SEROTYPES,

ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE PATTERNS AND CLINICAL FEATURES Objectives: This training course aims to strengthen the AMR surveillance for fastidious bacterial pathogens causing respiratory and invasive infections in the Philippines and correlate serotypes and antimicrobial resistance patterns with clinical features and patient outcomes.

Competencies Being Acquired: After the training, participants should be able to: Describe the clinical presentations caused by select fastidious bacterial pathogensStreptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis and Neisseria meningitidis. Describe the key aspects in the laboratory identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing of Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis and Neisseria meningitidis. Identify pertinent clinical data from patients with Streptococcus pneumoniae infections thru chart review. BASIC AEROBIC BACTERIOLOGY AND DATA MANAGEMENT TRAINING MODULE (WHONET PROGRAM) Objectives: The training course aims to equip the participant medical technologist and or pathologist the competent knowledge and skills to be able to establish or enhance the management of the bacteriology laboratory.

Competencies Being Acquired:

Understand the evidence based behind the standard operating procedures (SOPs) and the importance of audit and quality control for establishing validity. Able to process all routine specimens received in the laboratory and carry out further tests necessary for full identification of pathogens. Understanding current techniques for susceptibility testing including E-test, broth dilution and automated methodologies and performing appropriate quality control. Ability to provide proper interpretation of the above results based on CLSI standard. Awareness of understanding and detecting phenotypic method in antimicrobial susceptibility testing and its interpretation. Understanding the use and limitations of the antibiogram in cases of outbreak investigation and control. Ability to perform and clinically interpret results of latex agglutination and other serological tests. Familiarity of automated culture and identification methodologies. Knowledge of the principles of nucleic acid based techniques including PCR and RT-PCR Ability to determine or comply with the indications for referral of isolates to ARSRL. Familiar with: Quality control for Media, reagents, including daily equipment monitoring and calibration. Quality control including the NEQAS schemes. Team working and time management. Decision making and prioritization skills. Ability to use the WHONET Program for data entry, data analysis, releasing of results and other applications of the program for the management of bacteriology laboratory results.

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT TRAINING Objectives: To equip the participants with basic knowledge, skills and attitude to perform with confidence basic life support techniques to save lives.

Competencies Being Acquired: Describe the principles of Emergency Care Identify the three kinds of life support, four links of survival for adult and pediatric patients; and discuss the human anatomy and physiology of the nervous, respiratory and circulatory systems. Demonstrate how to provide rescue breathing alone for an adult, child & infant who show signs of circulation but have inadequate or not breathing. Demonstrate how to provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation to an adult, child & infant. Discuss the indications, proper use and maintenance of automated external defibrillator (AED). ROTATING RESIDENTS AND FELLOWS TRAINING PROGRAM Objectives: To recognize the signs and symptoms, elicit a good history and perform a complete physical examination that will lead to the diagnosis, differential diagnosis and proper approach to the management of common infectious and tropical diseases, including but not limited to: To recognize, form a working differential diagnosis and institute an initial logical treatment for uncommon and complicated infectious disease conditions that may be encountered in clinical practice To be cognizant of the rational use of antibiotics in clinical practice.
