Marchbank Free School pupils enjoy a workshop based on the musical The Greatest Showman

PUPILS PUT ON A SHOWSTOPPER DARLINGTON PUPILS showcased their singing and dancing talents, thanks to the help of a performing arts company.

Children at Marchbank Free School, Darlington, were visited by experts from the Darlington Academy of Performing Arts to help them get in touch with their creative sides.

They staged a show-stopping spectacular, inspired by The Greatest Showman, which involved a performance of film’s popular song A Million Dreams and a dance routine using ribbons.

The event was the latest in a programme designed to complement the academic curriculum at the school with a range of enrichment activities.

Head of school, Tess Wright, said: “The children all had an amazing time and sang and danced their hearts out.

“Activities such as these are so important to our immersive approach to learning.

Not only do the children make their lasting memories during these sessions but it also helps them to engage more fully in their academic studies.

STUDENTS SOARING HIGH AFTER SECURING ROLES IN THE RAF TWO students are hoping to see their career plans take off after securing places in the Royal Air Force reserves.

Darlington College Level 3 Uniform Public Services students Jacq Whitehead and Adam Porter underwent a rigorous three-week selection procedure to become reservists in the RAF Regiment.

In order to secure a place in 609 Squadron, at RAF Leeming, the pair had to complete basic training scenarios including chemical, biological and nuclear attacks, weapons handling and first aid following an air crash.

And the success of the 18-year-olds is expected to stand them in good stead for careers in the RAF or further study.

“We are very keen for our Level 3-5 students to take this important step into vocational learning, whether as cadets or through volunteer experience with the police and fire service.

“They can learn skills – such as leadership, teamwork, communications and problem solving – which are transferrable qualities for any career.”

PHOTOGRAPHER FULFILS LIFELONG DREAM A FORMER warehouse worker has put himself in the frame by fulfilling an ambition to run his own photography business.

Iain Reynolds, who held a lifetime interest in photographic technique, digital equipment and software, has become a franchisee of a national company, with help from BHP Law’s specialist franchising legal advice.

His business, Going Digital North East, now provides instruction and courses in digital photography both in the classroom and on location at venues across the region.

Dermot Winters, partner and head of the corporate and commercial team at BHP Law, said: “Iain is a tremendously talented photographer and vastly experienced teacher and lecturer.

“I have no doubt he will be very successful with this excellent franchise and I wish him all the best for the future.”

PD PORTS CROWNED BUSINESS OF THE YEAR ONE OF the UK’s major port groups has won a top prize at an annual industry award ceremony.

Teesport-based PD Ports took home the coveted title of Business of the Year 2019 at the Rail Freight Group’s (RFG) Awards.

Judges praised its outstanding commitment to its customers and the wider local community in the North East, along with the company’s decision to launch a second weekly service to Scotland at the business’ own financial risk.

PD Ports was commended for its internal scheme ‘Find It Fund It’ which helps staff support their chosen local charities, as well as for its partnership with Stockton Riverside College to establish and support the Logistics Academy – an initiative which encourages training and upskilling to current staff and the local population.

OYSTER FESTIVAL CELEBRATES ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR A NORTH EAST charity will receive a huge financial boost, thanks to the success of a popular fundraiser.

The annual Oyster Festival, held at Hardwick Hall Hotel, at Sedgefield, County Durham, has raised more than £80,000 for The Angel Trust at this year’s event.

The donation will help to continue the work of the organisation, which offers a range of support and services to those in need in Darlington and County Durham, along with funding projects which improve the local community.

Guests at the fundraiser enjoyed a variety of acts, including a headline performance from the voice of M People, Heather Small and music from Irish bands, Emerald Thieves and JJ Galway Band.

Further entertainment came from Durham comedian Josh Daniels, who has performed

at venues around the UK, and Steve Walls returned as compere.

John Adamson, owner of Hardwick Hall Hotel, hopes the amount raised will further the charity’s reach in the area.

“It is brilliant to be in a position to help out an organisation like The Angel Trust, which is doing really worthwhile work in the local community,” said John.

“Our guests were incredibly generous this year and I’m delighted to be able to hand over more than £80,000 to help the trust continue to offer life-changing support to those in need.”

THE RABY HUNT - TWO STARS, FOR THE THIRD TIME, ON ITS 10TH BIRTHDAY The North East’s top restaurant, which is celebrating a decade in business, has received a very special gift.

The same week it celebrated its 10th birthday, The Raby Hunt, at Summerhouse, near Darlington, learned it had retained its two Michelin stars for the third year running.

Run by self-taught chef, James Close, The Raby Hunt is the only restaurant in the region to hold two stars and one of only 23 two-star restaurants in the country.

It was also recently named the 13th best restaurant in the country by The Good Food Guide.

“Every chef wants a Michelin star,” said James, “and to have managed to retain our two stars for the third year running is absolutely wonderful.

“It is one thing earning two stars and quite another keeping them,” he said. “My team and I have to be at the top of our game every single day and this accolade is proof that I have one of the best teams in the business.

A FORMER professional footballer has got the ball rolling with the release of his autobiography.

Dave Thomas, who lives in County Durham, enjoyed a sporting career spanning nearly two decades, playing for teams including Everton, Burnley, Queens Park Rangers and England international.

And the sportsman, who was famous for playing the game without shin pads, has now detailed his life in Guiding Me Home & Away: Dave Thomas The Autobiography.

The author, who is now registered blind, wrote the book with help from David Roberts of Hornet Books following months of face to face interviews and is donating all the royalties from the book to Guide Dogs, a charity which Dave has already raised more than £72,000 for.

The book will include stories and anecdotes from his time as a professional player, interactions with the people who shaped his career such as Dave Sexton, Don Revie and Alf Ramsay, the glaucoma which led to his sight loss and his day to day life with the help of his guide dog, Hannah.

REMEMBERING THE OSCARS Following the success of Remembering the Movies, Strictly Come Dancing stars Janette Manrara and Aljaž Škorjanec will be returning to theatres across the UK next year, with their brand new show Remembering The Oscars.

Janette and Aljaž will be giving the red carpet treatment to Oscarwinning songs, dances, movies and stars in this exhilarating new dance spectacular, which comes to Billingham Forum Theatre on Wednesday 29 April.

Whether fans are Wishing On A Star, Swinging On A Star or merely dancing in the City of Stars, the show will take them from the Golden Age of Hollywood through to Disney family favourites and beyond.

FESTIVAL OF FOOD RETURNS Following the huge success of Rockliffe Hall’s first ever Festival of Food earlier this year, the five star resort is proud to announce the event will return, bigger and better, in February 2020.

During the eight day event, money will be raised for Hospitality Action, the Great North Air Ambulance and Action Against Hunger, with big prize raffles taking place at some of the evening dinners.

Tickets go on sale to members from 9am on Thursday 24th October and to the general public from 9am on Friday 25th October.

An Artisan Food Fair will launch proceedings on the first weekend before a series of special lunches, afternoon teas, dinners, workshops and food and wine events take place throughout the week, finished off with a spectacular “Come Dine With Us” Black Tie Gala Dinner on Saturday 8th February.

Chefs and food experts including Frances Atkins (The Yorke Arms), Terry Laybourne (21 Hospitality), Josh Overington (Le Cochon Aveugle) and Briony Williams (Great British Bake Off) are just some of the names confirmed for the gastronomic gathering.

The Artisan Food Fair will feature a winter wonderland twist and will welcome some of the North’s finest artisan producers. Enjoy sampling, shopping, cookery demonstrations, live music, warming drinks, spirit schools, wine tasting events and interactive workshops with producers.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT With a name that wouldn’t look out of place on a Parisian shop front, Le Cochon Aveugle brings innovative techniques, unusual wine and a modern European menu to the heart of York.

If you’re the type of person who often finds yourself spoilt for choice when it comes to ordering, then you’ll be pleased to hear that an entirely blind tasting menu at the Walmgate restaurant makes the decision for you.

A taste of what to expect can be found in the sample menu, with dishes including 60 day-aged beef tartare, cauliflower and sauce tonnato, hand-dived Orkney scallop cooked ‘à la ficelle’ in sea urchin butter and fattened guinea fowl with 36 month-aged Parmesan, wild garlic and Vin Jaune sauce.

There’s not many restaurants where even the butter is homemade – and even less where it’s so good it gets a special mention in a number of national reviews – but it is this level of detail and care which has earned Le Cochon Aveugle a stellar reputation with critics and diners alike.

Each dish is painstakingly put together to create the best possible flavour combination and with six or nine courses, this is no easy feat.

And one thing that is a constant on the menu, due in part to the reactions on the rare occasions Josh has taken it off, is the signature dish, Le Boudin Macaron – a black pudding twist on the delicate French dessert.

The venue has come a long way since Josh and wife Victoria launched it in 2014, with the pair also opening a wine bar – Cave du Cochon – which also serves a number of dishes just a few doors down.

“It really is a labour of love for us,” said Josh.

“We want people to enjoy the whole experience when they come to dine at the restaurant, so they can try some fantastic food with a great wine pairing in a really relaxed setting.

“Our blind tasting menu allows us to place the emphasis back on the quality of our ingredients and we love having the freedom to try new things.”

CHASING THE SUN

When temperatures dropped to single figures in the UK, Bronia McGregor escaped to the Algarve to make the most of the sun for a while longer.

Although I love snuggling up in a warm scarf and coat with a hot chocolate as much as the next person, a week away in the Portuguese sun was just too good an opportunity to pass up on.

Albufeira’s Old Town was just a short walk away from where we were staying and the first thing that stood out as we made our way there is that there are escalators integrated into the cliff.

Yes, you read that right, Portugal truly is in the future.

They don’t even give you the option of stairs and I have to say I imagine 34 | Darlington Today

this is something many tourists are truly thankful for after a heavy night on the town.

Don’t let the name deceive you because the Old Town is far from a sleepy place, with bustling bars and restaurants packed either side of the street, and karaoke, live music, dancing and much more taking place throughout the year.

All sorts of cuisines are on offer, from steakhouses and tapas to Asian and Indian, and a busy square and all number of side streets ensure the party continues late into the night.

But if dancing in the street isn’t quite your cup of tea, then venturing further into the Old Town will reward you with more traditional Portuguese restaurants, serving an array of dishes and fresh seafood.

And because the town is right next to the beach, there are a number of venues offering stunning views to take in while you eat – especially beautiful as the sun is setting.

Speaking of the beach - because the best thing about taking an

autumn holiday is getting to work on your tan – Albufeira offers golden sand, cheap sunbed rental and seaside bars and restaurants ready to serve you snacks, ice cream and cocktails next to the water While the temperature doesn’t get as high as it does in the summer, in October it still peaks at the low 20s which is more than enough to relax on the sand with a good book.

And while the area has plenty to offer, including another strip with bars and restaurants just a short drive from the Old Town, day trips and excursions are a great option to help you explore the region further.

There are an abundance of tours to book online or at the many shops within the town, promising an insight into the region’s history, a visit to the wineries, exploring hidden caves or even the chance to see dolphins in their natural habitat.

Although these were tempting, when we noticed that one of the days we were there was going to be overcast we decided to go old school and visit the bus station,

where a trip to the historical town of Silves was just nine euros and a 40 minute drive away.

The town is built on a hill so it is definitely a bit of an effort to explore, but it is well worth it, with colourful businesses around every corner, cobbled streets and a number of historical landmarks to visit.

The highest point of the town is home to The Castle of Silves, which is the best preserved castle in the Algarve, and somewhere visitors can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the surroundings and take in the gardens and sculptures on display there.

And if that’s not quite enough history for one day, then it’s also worth visiting Silves Cathedral, the Archaeological museum and the Roman bridge above the Arade river.

So with golden beaches, an abundance of history and a colourful nightlife scene, Albufeira is the perfect location to help make summer last just a little bit longer.

Lasting Powers of Attorney Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) are an essential part of retirement and later life planning.

Have you considered what would happen if you were unable to manage your financial affairs or make decisions over your healthcare, or one of your parents due to accidents, old age or illness?

Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) allow you to legally appoint someone you trust to make decisions on your behalf and without an LPA, no one has the automatic authority to do so. It is now possible to create 2 different types of LPAs. • Financial LPAs for decisions about finances, for example in relation to bank accounts, utility companies and property. • Health and Care LPAs for decisions about welfare and health, such as where you live and what care and medical treatment you might receive.

An LPA can only be drawn up whilst you have mental capacity and whilst it might sound daunting, the key is to deal with it sooner rather than later whilst your health is not an issue.
