DIGITAL CHAMPIONS

HELP IMPROVE SKILLS

A Digital Champion programme has begun to improve digital skills among those who are vulnerable or digitally excluded across County Durham and Darlington, in partnership with Barclays Digital Eagles.

The initiative is designed to educate volunteers, employees and trusted members of the community to support the people around them who may not be as technologically savvy – and so could fall prey to fraud or online scams.

Durham Police and Crime Commissioners Office have been working with Barclays Digital Eagles to develop the scheme, which will see selected members of staff take part in the Digital Champions programme, which will involve completing a series of online learning and virtual sessions on fraud, scams and keeping children safe online.

The idea is for these champions to then encourage others to take part in the scheme and hold advice sessions to help the community feel safe when using online services.

A number of cadets have also been introduced as part of the Durham Agency Against Crime group who have been trained to deliver additional cyber prevention advice across the area. Anyone who feels they have been scammed or involved in fraudulent activity, or have information about a possible fraudster, contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.

For further protection and to prevent online fraud, visit National Cyber Security Centrencsc.gov.uk for top tips and advice.

‘MELISSA’ inspires students to pursue medical careers

STUDENTS at a college in Darlington were inspired to pursue careers in the health industry after receiving a visit from pathologists and scientists from hospitals across the North East.

More than 100 students from Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College learnt about career pathways into pathology via interactive activities, such as why autopsies are carried out and how a range of diseases are detected.

The lessons were given on board the mobile MELISSA vehicle, an NHS training and simulation bus, which stopped off in Darlington. The event was organised by the Royal College of Pathologists as part of its Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Dr Ali Robb, consultant microbiologist at Newcastle’s RVI and head of school for laboratory medicine at Health Education England in the North East, said: “Pathologists are not always seen by patients yet we’re involved in 70 per cent of diagnoses that are made in healthcare, so

with the help of MELISSA we can raise awareness of what we do in a fun way as well as inspiring students to go into healthcare.”

The students who got on board are all studying Biology, Applied Science and Health and Social Care at the college.

QE student, Ruby Holly Shrehorn, of Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire, said the event had been “fun” The 17-year-old, who is studying for A Levels in English Literature, Biology and Chemistry, said: “I like learning about diseases and the human body, so I’ve found it really interesting. I’m still deciding what I want to do next, but I am looking at biological writing so this has been really useful.”

Fellow student Scott Campbell, 18, of Darlington, who’s studying English Language, Film and Applied Science, said: “It was interesting and I particularly liked learning about autopsies. I am considering a career in healthcare as I’ve always been interested in human biology so this has been good.”

WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE

A flavoured coffee company is waking up the market and growing its team to meet demand.

Beanies, which is based in Darlington and sells a wide range of instant coffee in over 40 flavours, has enjoyed brand growth of nearly 40 per cent since before the pandemic, and has taken on three members of staff in 2022 alone.

With a workforce of 35 based in the company’s Faverdale Industrial Estate factory, the firm has grown consistently since its

launch in 2013. Earlier this year, it won a Queen’s Award for International Trade in recognition of its growth and commercial success. In the UK the company supplies retailers such as Sainsbury’s, Aldi, Lidl and Home Bargains.

Beanies’ Sales and Marketing Director Mark Stangroom said: “The Beanies brand is going from strength to strength. It has grown 38 per cent since before Covid and our Queen’s Award win was based on seven years of continuous export growth.”

HISTORY UNCOVERED AT COUNTY DURHAM BUILDING…

Restoration on the historic Hilton Hall, which dates back to medieval times, has led to the discovery of part of a former chapel.

The Grade II listed building is on the national list of historic and architecturally important buildings.

And while work was being carried out to transform into a residential property, historic elements of the former of St Catherine, a chantry to Staindrop Church, have been uncovered.

Several recesses in the formal sitting room have been carefully restored and leaded windows – which had been covered over to create storage areas within the Hall – have been revealed and preserved using traditional materials and methods.

Intricate ceiling mouldings, which had been painted over and lost their unique features or had been damaged beyond repair, have also been brought back to their original design using specialist methods or replacement plaster mouldings created by the buildings team.

Once finished, Hilton Hall will comprise of four bedrooms with two en-suites, a large kitchen and a living room with original decorative features and will become part of Raby Estates’ let residential portfolio.

For more information about Raby Estate’s projects and the buildings team, visit: www.raby.co.uk/about-us/development/ projects/

The company currently sells to more than 30 countries including South Africa, India, Malaysia, Japan and Australia as well.

LIFT OFF FOR NORTH EAST STUDENTS

Hundreds of students from across the region took part in a programme to help their STEM careers take off, guided by experts including NASA and ESA astronauts.

Space 2101 is a global educational programme that aims to challenge students and inspire them to embark on a career in STEM – science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

For the first time, the event was held in the Tees Valley, taking place at Teesside University Students’ Union over half term, with nearly 500 young people aged between 14 and 18 learned from experts such as NASA astronaut Susan Kilrain, ESA Astronaut Gerhard Thiele, space scientist Dr Michaela Musilova, and other worldrenowned educators.

Students worked with the educators over five days, solving daily problems on topics such as sustainable energy, water and food production, with the ultimate goal of designing a sustainable habitat that could be used in space or on Mars.

MAGICAL CHRISTMAS SEASON SET TO LAUNCH AT RABY CASTLE

Raby Castle is preparing to celebrate all things Christmas with its selection of festive experiences.

For a merry outdoor experience against the majestic backdrop of Raby Castle itself, a new themed trail will be introduced this year, as The Plotters’ Forest – the new woodland hideaway playground – is transformed into a winter wonderland.

With the familiar sounds of Christmas music in the air, visitors will need to get their detective caps on to find the hidden Christmas clues – and earn themselves an extra treat. The Christmas trail will also come alive at night illuminated under the dark skies.

Those who are looking for a winter adventure can also explore Raby’s Deer Park which will be hosting a 12 days of Christmas trail –included in the admission price.

A Christmas market on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th December will showcase festive gifts and delicious treats from local suppliers and visitors can also purchase one of Raby’s very own Christmas trees which have been grown especially for the festive season on the estate’s plantation.

Sophie Brown, events manager at Raby said: “Christmas at Raby is a such magical time of year and we love watching our visitors enjoy the festive celebrations here – whether they’re picking up a Christmas tree to take a piece of Raby home with them or spending quality family time together enjoying our outdoor trail.”

Raby has also extended the festivities at the Estate’s High Force Hotel and Waterfall with a Find a Raby Reindeer trail.

Included in the admission price and running from Saturday 26th November until Sunday 31st December, families will need to wrap up warm on this wintry walk as they collect the Christmas clues, from snowmen and stars to bells and holly, on the woodland trail.

The waterfall route has also recently been extended into the woodlands where a series of intricately carved and thoughtfully designed woodland sculptures have been placed along the walking route for families to discover –from a moon-gazing hare and an observant owl to a beautiful fox and a giant caterpillar.

Afterwards guests can cosy up by a roaring fire in the hotel and tuck into a hearty Teesdale lunch.

High Force Hotel will also be introducing a delicious festive menu throughout December – perfect for a catch up with friends or colleagues – and will be open on Christmas Day so the family cook can hang up their apron and not worry about the stress of Christmas lunch.

For those looking for a seasonal escape, the hotel will be offering a cosy winter waterfall stay and bookings made between 28th November 2022 and 26th February 2023 can enjoy three nights for the price of two by using the code WO22.

With exclusive access to Raby Castle’s Deer Park and High Force Waterfall included in these bookings, visitors can head out on a wintry adventure before heading back to the hotel to warm up in front of a roaring fire and enjoy dinner in the stunning Garden Room.

Raby Castle

Raby Castle is set in picturesque parkland where both red and fallow deer roam near Staindrop in County Durham. The Castle was built in the 14th century and has been home to the Vane family for generations, previously home to Cecily Nevill, mother of two kings of England. It was also the scene of the plotting of the Rising of the North and a Parliamentary stronghold during the Civil War.

Today, Raby Castle is the seat of Lord and Lady Barnard. Visitors can visit the Castle, Deer Park and The Plotters’ Forest Adventure Playground. Online booking is advised through the website.

The Deer Park is open daily, 10am – 4pm. The Castle is open seasonally. The dog friendly Yurt Café and Stables Shop are open daily to the public, and visitors do not need a ticket to visit these areas.

The visitor attraction is currently going through an exciting five-year major development period. Known as The Rising, the ambitious programme includes the renovation and restoration of historic buildings – some which have never been open to the public – alongside the redesign of the walled gardens. The first phase of The Rising is now complete with the opening of The Plotters’ Forest adventure playground in April 2022.

High Force Hotel & Waterfall

Also, part of the Raby Estate, just 30 minutes’ drive from Raby Castle and situated within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and European Geopark, is the spectacular High Force Waterfall, one of the magnificent waterfalls in the UK. Just a stone’s throw from this outstanding natural landmark and miles of country walks through scenic Upper Teesdale is High Force Hotel, a rural retreat with 10 individually styled en-suite rooms and a warm welcome. Famous for its Sunday lunches and daily menu which showcases seasonal produce from the Raby Estate.

CHRISTOPHER BIGGINS

HE’S A NATIONAL TREASURE WHO IS HEADING THIS WAY TO DARLINGTON THIS CHRISTMAS – BERNICE SALTZER FIND OUT WHY THE TOWN HAS A SPECIAL PLACE IN CHRISTOPHER BIGGINS’ HEART…

“When the curtain rises on this year’s seasonal offering at Darlington Hippodrome, it will have a particular place in the heart of its leading performer.

The Pantomime Adventures of Peter Pan will see Christopher Biggins – star of film, tv and theatre – don his dame’s costume and take up the part of Mrs Smee.

And it will be a return to where his panto dame career started, first taking up the role at Darlington Civic Theatre an incredible 40 years ago.

“Darlington was where I made my panto debut in Mother Goose,” he revealed.

“But it was definitely something I didn’t want to do. I was offered it time and time again and I said no thank you.

“To me it was something that proper actors didn’t do but I kept being asked relentlessly.”

Biggins is refreshingly honest about how he was eventually worn down.

“The producers said to me “ you do know it’s £1000 a week? “ which was

an incredible amount of money so I said yes.”

Although initially it may have been the financial incentive which made Biggins give in, he soon found that it was an experience he completely loved – and has continued ever since.

I’ve only missed one year which is the one I was in the jungle,” he said.

“The jungle” of course was I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, which Biggins’ approached with his trademark enthusiasm and good humour.

He left after taking the winner’s crown and now spends his festive season in arguably slightly more comfortable surroundings.

This will be his fourth time appearing in Darlington and an experience which he is obviously looking forward to.

At an incredible 73 years old – and with no signs of slowing down – you get the distinct feeling that he only agrees to projects he’s got a particular passion for.

“I’ve got all the kettles and toasters and everything that you need and that you work to pay for,” he said.

“So it’s nice to do the things that I really enjoy.”

Biggins is also a stalwart of teatime television and is about to be seen in a celebrity episode of Tipping Point as well as being a regular in Dictionary Corner on Countdown.

It’s easy to forget the serious acting roles that have also shaped his career, from the cult Rocky Horror Picture Show to multi award winning series’ like I Claudius where he played Nero to Poldark where, in his own words, he played “a sex crazed vicar.”

It’s an impressive CV for someone who started acting at the age of 16 and has hardly paused for breath since.

“There’s a responsibility for actors who appear in pantomime because it’s often a first introduction to theatre and that experience can help fill the theatre the rest of the year round,” he said.

And does he have any thoughts about slowing down?

“Absolutely not,” said Biggins.

“Why would I? I have had an incredible career and met so many wonderful people, many of whom have become wonderful friends.

“I’ve been very lucky.”

DESIGNER CHARITY SHOP OPEN ON HIGH ROW

Fashionistas are in for a treat as a hospice opens a town centre designer charity shop.

Luxury labels, ranging from Hugo Boss to Yves Saint Laurent, are filling the rails at the newly refurbished store on High Row, Darlington, run by St Teresa’s

Radley bags line up with Liberty scarves in a boutique setting of a shop, which was formerly for home furnishings.

Decorated in vintage green and tasteful stone colours, with new lighting, the shop features a spacious wheelchair-accessible changing room and comfortable furnishings to create the perfect ambience for designer

Other labels include Tommy Hilfiger, Barbour, Hobbs, Laura Ashley, Guess, Zara, Karen Millen and French Connection. Shoes by Love Heels, Russell and Bromley and Phase Eight complement the clothing perfectly offering the shoppers the chance to find a complete outfit from head to toe. Active leisure and sportswear complete the clothing ranges with labels including Lacoste, Jack Wolfskin, Slazenger, Superdry and Adidas.

Head of Retail Marjorie McIntyre said: “We realised from stocking our online fashion platform Depop the potential in designer labels.

“We also launched a pop-up designer store for three months in Northumberland Street, which went down a storm. We had customers drive from as far away as Leeds to buy up hundreds of pounds worth of Hugo Boss suits and Vivienne Westwood shoes.

“Thanks to the generosity of donors we have more than enough stock to launch this latest venture which has all the trappings of a stylish boutique.

“We are thrilled with the result which feels cool and inviting. It also offers customers the chance to shop for top quality clothes at a time when we are all watching the pennies because of the cost of living crisis.

“We are also offering a wide range of top quality accessories and all proceeds will help fund the hospice’s award winning services, which are free of charge to anyone in the community.”

There are few streets in the North East – in fact in the whole of the UK –that can boast the style and history of Newcastle’s Grey Street.

Renowned for its breathtaking Georgian architecture, it’s not surprising that it was previously voted by listeners to BBC Radio 4 as the ‘Best Street in the UK.’

From Grey’s Monument at the top –the gateway to much of the city’s top shopping outlets – past the renowned Theatre Royal, visitors make their way past bustling restaurants, art galleries and bars and find themselves at the Grey Street Hotel.

This boutique hotel is perfectly placed for a visit to the city. It’s a quick walk downhill to Newcastle Quayside, a short

jaunt up the street to Eldon Square, The Gate and all the other busy outlets and near endless eateries and top notch watering holes.

The hotel is in a Grade II listed building so history is all around, but once you enter you experience contemporary design at it’s very best.

Each of the 49 rooms have a style of their very own, many of which take more than a passing nod to the characters who have links with the hotel and the area in particular.

For a boutique hotel the facilities are second to none. If your stay is purely about r and r, then check out City Retreat, the on-site award-winning beauty salon which offers a whole host of treatment to help you feel relaxed and/ or reinvigorated.

And talking of award-winning – no visit to the hotel is complete without popping in to Leila Lily’s, the hotel’s highly acclaimed restaurant. Leila Lily’s gives new meaning to the word lavish and the unique décor is a feast for the eyes – even before you start to examine the menu.

Be prepared for cascading flowers, elaborate lighting and designer furniture – no surprise then that it too has been the recipient of a number of awards.

IT’s a great place for breakfast, brunch, lunch, afternoon tea or dinner – and it does a pretty mean cocktail as well!

There’s nothing quite like a night away and when you don’t have to travel too far then that’s a bonus.

So check out the Grey Street Hotel – or even better, enter our competition and you could win a night for yourself and a guest!

DOGS TRUST DARLINGTON SEEKS DOGGY FOSTER ‘PAWRENTS’

Dogs Trust Darlington is calling on local dog lovers to consider opening their hearts and their homes to give a dog a temporary home as part of the charity’s fostering scheme.

Dogs Trust’s Home from Home fostering scheme finds foster homes for dogs that need a little extra TLC and time out from the hustle and bustle of the rehoming centre, such as young puppies, older dogs and those with medical conditions. The team at Darlington are particularly looking for doggy foster carers who have experience caring for pregnant dogs and newborn puppies with training and support provided.

Dogs Trust’s fostering scheme also helps to free up much needed space in its rehoming centres as the charity faces the busiest period in its history. Over the last few months, record numbers of people have contacted the charity to enquire about handing over their dogs as the rising cost of living continues to affect dog owners across the country.

There are currently 17 dogs living in foster homes within County Durham, with 122 being rehomed through the scheme this year.

The team at Darlington are looking for foster homes where someone is around for most of day with no young children.

The foster home should be no more than 40 minutes away from the centre in Sadberge. The scheme places dogs of all shapes and sizes into temporary homes whilst they wait to be adopted, including puppies that require round the clock care.

Jade Heaviside, Home from Home Coordinator at Dogs Trust Darlington, said:

“Home from Home fostering is an essential part of our rehoming process. While many dogs are happy to settle in our kennels and enjoy being taken care of by our amazing canine carers, some aren’t able to adjust and miss their home comforts too much.

“Young puppies, nervous dogs and those who have spent the majority of their lives in a home often struggle in a rehoming centre. Living with a foster carer allows dogs to enjoy life in a loving environment whilst they wait for their forever home.

“We are particularly appealing for fosterer carers for pregnant dogs and mothers with their pups as they really benefit from being in a home environment. We would love to hear from anyone who has previous experience of caring for newborn puppies. If you think that you have the right experience and time to dedicate to helping our wonderful dogs then please get in touch.”

Fostering may be of interest to anyone who would love to have a dog in their life, but who can’t commit to owning a dog of their own. Volunteer foster carers are provided with everything the dog needs such as food, bedding and toys, and the charity will cover the cost of any necessary vet bills. They are also supported by the Dogs Trust team for guidance and advice whenever needed.

If you can help or would like to find out more, please contact Dogs Trust Darlington on 0303 003 0000 or email HFHDarlington@dogstrust.org.uk

‘PAWLITICAL’ GUEST VISITS DOGS TRUST DARLINGTON

Alex Cunningham MP was welcomed to Dogs Trust Darlington recently where he was greeted by a wagging tail reception.

The Member of Parliament for Stockton North enjoyed a tour of the recently renovated rehoming centre, which was officially reopened earlier this year in May. He was introduced to some current residents including friendly terrier Sam, who has since gone to his forever home.

Dogs Trust staff discussed with Alex various dog welfare issues including the current cost of living crisis and how this is affecting both dog owners and the work at the centre.

Following his visit, Alex Cunningham, said: “I really enjoyed visiting Dogs Trust Darlington and meeting the canine residents, including Sam, and the hardworking team who ensure that all of the dogs in their care are well looked after.

“The passion and enthusiasm that Dogs Trust staff have for the well-being of their canine residents was very much on display. I was really impressed by the facilities on offer at the centre, from the hydrotherapy pool to bespoke walking areas, that support the dogs there, and the way staff go above and beyond to look after and rehome so many dogs across the North East.”

If you think you can offer a dog in need a temporary home, please contact Dogs Trust Darlington on 0303 003 0000 or email HFHDarlington@dogstrust.org.uk

A key question when thinking about getting divorced is what will happen with the matrimonial home, a couple’s finances and debts?

You can agree arrangements between yourselves as to who will live in a property, whether it may be sold, how money may be divided and who becomes responsible for debts. This may be an informal agreement between you however this would not be legally binding or enforceable by the Court. Whilst things may be amicable at present, this position may change in the future and one party may also have a significant change in circumstances, for example an inheritance or new relationships.

We would always recommend any agreement is recorded through the Court, via a Consent Order, where the Court will formally record your mutual agreement and can help protect each of you in the future by obtaining a ‘clean break’ clause in the Order to ensure finances are finalised, regardless of any future changes.

If matters are complex, protracted or disputed between you both then Mediation may be considered to help you reach agreement over finances or ultimately have the Court intervene to make the final decision if you cannot agree.

You and your partner will be required to provide full information regarding your current financial circumstances including bank statements, interests in any properties or businesses, current pension provisions and liabilities such as loans, credit or store cards. You will also be asked about your current outgoings and standard of living to determine your financial needs. This information will demonstrate what assets, income and liabilities there are available within the marriage/civil partnership for negotiation and settlement.

If you have separated, you may also wish to consider making or updating a Will whilst the finances are being resolved.

Dear Santa...

My name is Oliver and I am 8 years old. I’ve been very good this year and tried really hard in school and I’ve been kind to all of the kids in our house. I don’t think I’ll be getting coal this year! All that I want for Christmas is to live with a family and have my own bedroom. It would be nice if the walls were blue, but I don’t really mind. If the family like playing football, going to the park and having pizza for tea, that would be even better! I would also love for the other kids in my house to have families to live with this Christmas, so please can you help them too? Merry Christmas, Oliver

Give a child the best gift ever ...a home

Christmas can be a difficult time of year for children and young people who cannot be with their families. Foster carers play a vital role in providing caring and supportive homes to children and young people who cannot live with their family. Darlington Borough Council Fostering and Supported Lodgings Team is reaching out to our communities to recruit more foster carers to join our team. Could you be one of them?

Safe, caring and nurturing homes are needed for a few days in an emergency to a few weeks, a few months, or a permanent long-term home for a child. We need foster carers for teenagers, sibling groups of two or more, children with more complex needs, babies, and toddlers.

We also need to recruit Supported Lodgings providers who can provide a home for older young people who may be care leavers making their first step to independence. This could include unaccompanied asylum-seeking young people who have arrived in the country after fleeing war, violence, or persecution.

Are you an encouraging, kind and supportive person who could help

children and young people grow, develop, have fun, and achieve their potential?

We encourage people with a range of life experiences and diverse backgrounds to apply to be foster carers or Supported Lodgings providers. You do not need any specific qualifications. If you have a spare room in your home and a commitment to support children and young people, we would like to hear from you.

Being a foster carer or Supported Lodgings provider with Darlington Borough Council enables more of

our cared for children to live in their local area, and maintain their family and friendship links.

Our foster carers and Supported Lodgings providers receive support from the whole professional team around the child, and from other carers and providers too, as well as competitive financial remuneration.

Being a foster carer or Supported Lodgings provider is a very rewarding career, which will have its challenges, but will enable you to make a difference to the life of a child or young person.

THE WONDER OF WHITBY…

Confirmed traveller, Bernice Saltzer, find a little slice of paradise much closer to home…

It was lockdown which changed the way many of us think about our holidays. It proved to be a boom time for “staycations” when the option to fly to foreign shores was taken away from us.

Desperate for a break, people started to look closer to home and it made us all realise that there were many delights right on our doorstep.

We may now be able to take those long haul trips again, but that doesn’t mean that visiting somewhere special for a long weekend – or even a week- isn’t a very appealing option.

That’s certainly the case for anyone visiting Seaton Hall at Staithes near Whitby, an ancient manor house which can trace its history back 1000 years and is the perfect place to explore the Yorkshire heritage coast and the North Yorkshire Moors.

While you can stay in the main hall, Seaton is surrounded by a number of self catering cottages, each one beautifully and uniquely decorated and with stunning furnishings. It’s a place where style meets comfort, a real home-from-home which we have enjoyed on more than one occasion.

The Hall’s owner is a real art lover and a voracious collector and that can be seen in each cottage, which features many of the pieces he’s amassed over the years.

But it’s not just inside that this love of art can be seen, as the stunning grounds have their unique pieces scattered around – including some unique, multi-coloured art gates which were specially commissioned.

And it’s not over yet. The owner is creating new and exciting reasons to visit, including a Zodiac Arboretum Pinetum – a circular garden which will be sectioned to reflect each sign of the zodiac. Overall Seaton Hall can sleep up to 28 people across its cottages, so it’s the perfect place for a big gathering. From the impressive Seaton Mote which can sleep up to ten people to the smaller cottages that can take four people, it’s also available for exclusive use for anyone wanting a real get together.

Seaton Hall also now welcomes day visitors, who come to see what’s on offer at the on site antiques market – a number of individual little stands under one roof selling everything from furniture to jewellery.

During our stay our little group enjoyed self catering in the fabulous kitchen, but should you want to steer clear of the cooking –and the dishes – then the Barn Owl Café and Bistro is a great option.

Located in the grounds, it offers a range of breakfasts, snacks and afternoon tea throughout the day

and is also now open on evenings where they chef showcases his skills.

You leave Seaton Hall feeling relaxed, refreshed, spoilt and generally positive – what’s not to love?
