LOCAL HOME CARE COMPANY WINS AWARD A NORTH EAST care company has been honoured with a top regional award, after glowing recommendations from clients and their families.

Home Instead Senior Care, based in Darlington and Northallerton, specialises in providing at-home care to older people and has been named as one of the 20 most recommended providers in the Home Care Awards 2019.

The award is the result of scoring highly on homecare.co.uk, an independent review site for the home-care industry, which publishes verified feedback submitted by the public.

DOGS TRUST COMPLETES FIRST STAGE OF REBUILD A DARLINGTON dogs’ charity undergoing a rebuild is on the lookout for people who can provide a temporary home to a furry friend.

Aiming to be completed in July 2020, the work at Darlington’s Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre will provide more kennels, a dedicated training and behaviour centre and a hydrotherapy pool for dogs recovering from injury.

And with kennel space limited during the rebuild, the team are in need of more foster carers to join their Home From Home programme, to give a home to animals in need.

Foster placements range from one week to nine months and families receive full support and advice regarding the dog in their care, with Dogs Trust providing food, bedding and any other necessities, along with covering any veterinary treatment.

Natalie Waller, Home From Home Foster Coordinator at Dogs Trust Darlington, said: “We currently have lots of dogs staying at the Rehoming Centre who would benefit from time in foster care.

“Our ideal foster carers are required to be adult only families, who have a bit more time on their hands to spend with a canine companion.

“They don’t have to have a lot of experience of caring for dogs, however we would like them to be open minded to all different shapes, sizes and breeds.”

Dogs Trust’s Home from Home Foster Scheme was developed to give dog lovers, who are not in a position to adopt on a permanent basis, the opportunity to experience the rewards of dog ownership on a temporary basis and to help homeless animals experience life in a home environment.

SPECIAL SCHOOL CELEBRATES STUDENTS’ SUCCESS AWARDS for kindness, friendship and helpfulness were presented to pupils at a special end of year school celebration.

Students at Beaumont Hill Primary Academy, part of The Education Village Academy Trust, Darlington, were rewarded for being part of ‘an awesome year’ at the school’s annual record of achievement event.

The specialist academy, which supports children with a range of abilities from profound and multiple learning difficulties to severe and complex needs, welcomed hundreds of parents, carers, family and friends to an afternoon celebration where children were presented with trophies, certificates and awards.

“It is wonderful to be able to welcome so many people to Beaumont Hill Primary Academy to once again celebrate the wonderful achievements of our pupils,” said head teacher Tess Wright.

“It has been extremely difficult to choose who should receive an award; our teachers are very passionate and they all wanted their students to win.”

Recognition was given to winners and runners up in a host of academic and sporting subjects including maths, writing, reading, computing and swimming, alongside certificates for attitude, behaviour, sharing, and attendance.

SCHOOL RALLIES AFTER PUPIL HAS HIS LEG AMPUTATED A SCHOOL community is celebrating a successful fundraiser for a pupil diagnosed with bone cancer.

A school charity fair raised more than £1500 for Year 3 pupil Craig, who is having treatment for osteosarcoma and is currently recovering from a leg amputation.

It increases the total raised so far for Craig’s Fund to over £2000, including £480 from his classmates at Springfield Academy, which is part of the Education Village, Darlington.

Charity stalls sold cakes, books, toys and gifts, with a raffle and a popular Soak the Teacher competition.

The aim is to raise as much money as possible to buy specialist equipment that he may need in the future – including a prosthetic, a running blade or wheelchair – to allow Craig, seven, to be as mobile as possible.

Principal Richard Gartland said: “The whole community is rallying around and it is heartwarming to see how much everyone cares about Craig.

“We have a summer fair every year but this year the support from families, friends and the local business community has been astounding, so touched were they by Craig’s plight.

“Stalls were groaning under the weight of things to sell and the playground was packed with visitors.”

THERMAL INDUSTRY TRAINING CENTRE BENEFITS FROM £500,000 EXPANSION A UNIQUE industry-backed organisation has completed the latest expansion phase to its national training centre, following a £500,000 re-development.

“We now have an enhanced building that is rich in resources, staffing and facilities, where we are able to consistently produce very high quality training.”

Thermal Insulation Contractors Association (TICA), formed to represent organisations within the industrial and commercial insulation industry, is the sole provider of thermal insulation apprenticeships in the UK.

With a membership of more than 75 UKbased insulation contracting companies,

TICA trains between 80 and 100 apprentices each year providing them with a framework of qualifications, including NVQ level 2 and 3 for Scottish candidates, and employer led standards for English candidates.

The six-month build, at TICA’s headquarters in Darlington, has increased the centre’s floor space by 30 per cent, creating additional workshops, specialist asbestos training rooms, enhanced classroom provision, new kitchen and toilet facilities and recycling and storage areas.

The centre, funded through TICA membership contributions and voluntary member levies, provides customised training for thermal insulation apprentices, in addition to the delivery of NVQ qualifications and competency assessments for skilled workers.

TICA chief executive Marion Marsland said: “Our latest expansion has given us the capacity to provide even more bespoke training.

“In our role as Sector Skills Council we are delivering a greater number of competency assessments to skilled workers, as well as accommodating our core apprenticeship facility, and these new premises allow us to accommodate both sets of training on the one site.

MARIO

The Family Magic Extravaganza returns to the Customs House, at South Shields, on 10 October and we caught up with one of its stars, New York-based Mario “the Maker Magician” Marchese.

How did you get into magic?

I accidentally walked into a magic shop thinking it was an antique shop and when I opened the door my favourite scene from my favourite movie was playing in the back on an old VHS television set. It was one of those rare moments in life and it’s something I still think about today. I ended up seeing a few tricks that day and buying something small, then I went back and bought a few more, and a few more and the rest is history!

What can people expect at the Family Magic Extravaganza?

I’m a maker. I build robotic things that fall apart on purpose and I pick up a lot of things off the floor. I love the classics of slapstick comedy and I love modern technology like 3D printing, programming, and 3D design. My show is geared to inspire kids to be makers! To show magic is not some far-fetched intangible thing, we can make incredible things with ordinary objects.

What is so special about children’s magic?

It’s the pretending! The instant appreciation for slapstick comedy, the light heartedness and the honesty. Do children make a better audience? For me, personally, yes. Someone once said to me that the audience creates the performer. I had to shift my dreams to this reality because I am a better performer when children are watching. I don’t know why and it wasn’t something I intended when I became a magician but once I

surrendered to the idea that it’s not up to me to decide what performer I am, my character started appearing on stage.

What do your own children think of your act?

They are sick of it! I’m kidding, no, really, I’m not. They’re totally over it. People say we have a need to rebel from our parents and I think there is a lot of truth to that. I have a feeling when my children grow up they will become lawyers and doctors and play golf.

What advice do you have for any aspiring magicians?

What do you love most about your job?

Being able to travel with my family, performing at theatres across America and beyond and home-schooling our children to give them an opportunity to experience life in a way I dreamed of as a child.

Are you looking forward to performing in the UK for the first time?

I can’t wait! I feel super grateful to have this opportunity. Performing in a different country puts me on my toes but I love the challenge. Every new place I go, I keep realising children everywhere laugh at the same things. And that is real magic to me!

THE MAKING OF YOU As school leavers weigh up their options for the next stage in their lives and careers, two colleges are offering free courses, which could be The Making of You. For most of us, January is the month of new starts – for making plans and embracing new projects.

But for anyone of school leaving age, autumn is when big decisions are made.

Results envelopes have been opened and their contents digested and, inevitably many will know which sixth form college or university they are headed to next.

Many – but by no means all. Because, for every young person who has a plan, there is another who hasn’t. Who maybe didn’t do too well in their GCSEs, doesn’t know what career they want to follow or perhaps just doesn’t have the confidence or information to make a constructive decision.

Funded by the Department for Education, they have been awarded ‘outstanding’

by Ofsted and now they have launched a campaign; The Making of You, to raise awareness of the vast range of careers to which their training is geared.

“Since its formation in 1999, MPCs have prepared more than 3000 young people for a military career,” said founder Huw Lewis MBE, “but we have also helped at least a further 12,000 into other areas of employment and training.

“Our aim is to ensure that our learners – whether they want to join the British Armed Forces or not – the core skills to support their ambitions.

“We help them get into good physical shape and teach them about healthy eating, we

help them achieve qualifications in English and Mathematics and train them in problem solving, leadership and communication.

“And not only does that vastly boost their employability but it boosts their confidence and self -worth.

“Basically, whether they decide to go for military or civilian life – we will get them ready.”

The colleges at Norton Road, Stockton and at the Eden Armoury, St Andrew’s Road, Bishop Auckland, are among five in the North East, with others at South Shields and Newcastle.

But there are two colleges in Teesside and County Durham – of 28 across the UK - that can help, by providing free courses to help 16 to 19-year-olds, of all abilities and from all backgrounds, reach their potential.

Military Preparation Colleges offer a range of academic, functional and health and fitness courses along with training in physical fitness, public speaking and communication.

And they are unique in that all their instructors are ex-British Armed Forces personnel, who use their military backgrounds to help learners set and reach the targets that will progress them to their chosen careers.

FEE-FI-FO-FUM, A GIANT OF A PANTO COMES TO DARLINGTON! Following the amazing reception to last year’s offering of Aladdin, Darlington Hippodrome hopes their annual festive pantomime will outgrow them all when they present the one you’ve all ‘bean’ waiting for - Jack and the Beanstalk!

Follow Jack as he climbs a beanstalk of gigantic proportions as he fights to outwit the evil giant and win riches beyond his wildest dreams, and the

hand of the girl he loves in a panto packed with star casting, laughter, music, special effects, magic beans and bundles of audience participation.

The spectacular production stars Ballroom/Latin Dance Champion and Strictly Come Dancing Head Judge SHIRLEY BALLAS as Mother Nature.

Joining Shirley, in the title of role of Jack Trot, will be Britain’s Got Talent winner GEORGE SAMPSON. Starring as Jack’s hapless brother Simon will be standup comedian PHIL WALKER and the evil villain Fleshcreep will be played by actor and comedy writer DANIEL TAYLOR. Having danced since the age of seven, Shirley Ballas has taken the dancing world by storm. She is 3 time ‘British Open to the World’ Latin American Champion, 10-time US Latin American Champion, and multiple-times British National Champion.

By 21, Shirley had won nearly every major title she competed in worldwide. She is the only person to have ever won the ‘British Open to the World’ Latin American Championships in

Blackpool with two different partners and reached the finals an impressive 17 times. Shirley still remains the youngest ever female to reach the ‘British Open to the World’ Dance Championship finals.

Jack and the Beanstalk will be produced by Qdos Entertainment, the world’s biggest pantomime producer, and the team behind Darlington’s annual pantomime, who guarantee another must-see production packed with audience participation, sensational music and dancing, jawdropping special effects and fantastic festive entertainment suitable for all ages.

Darlington Hippodrome Programming and Development Director Heather Tarran-Jones said: “Strictly Come Dancing is one of the most popular programmes on television so who better to star in Darlington’s best pantomime than head judge Shirley Ballas. I’m sure Darlington audiences will be as excited as we are to see Shirley tripping the light fantastic on the Hippodrome stage.”

LIVING IT UP AT THE SAMLING… It’s one of the Lake District’s most luxurious hotels – and Bernice Saltzer fulfils a long-held dream by spending a night there…

Depending on which Scandinavian language you choose to believe, Samling means “gathering” or “collection.”

Regardless of what word you choose, if you do decide to “gather” at this unspeakably luxurious hotel then there’s no doubt you’ll “collect” a memory you’ll treasure for ever.

The Samling, nestled between Windermere and Ambleside, is reached by a “blink and you’ll miss it” entrance. A simple sign welcomes you up the driveway and it’s not surprising, given this level of discretion, that it is has a huge celebrity following.

Rumour has it that this is where Tom Cruise proposed to Nicole Kidman, and while their conscious coupling may not have had a fairytale ending, this is certainly the perfect setting for romance.

Our accommodation was one of the stunning cottages, split across two floors with a lovely sitting room and a bedroom which once again gave us views of the lake.

I suspect that the clever designers have kept the décor across the hotel in cool colours so as not to detract from what is undoubtedly the star attraction – the unbelievable surroundings.

The hotel was taken over a few years ago by a businessman and his wife who visited there frequently and snapped it up when it was put up for sale.

They have invested heavily and boy does it show. It is elegance personified, decorated in stylish but muted colours with a dining room which is virtually surrounded by windows so you can admire the breathtaking view.

No luxury visit anywhere is complete without a little – or rather a lot – of delicious food, provided courtesy of Head Chef, Robby Jenks.

His attention to detail and commitment to local produce is very much evident here, with a beautiful tasting menu which showcases his skill in the kitchen.

What also makes The Samling stand out is the impeccable service from the front of house staff – friendly, attentive, entertaining

and just generally at the top of their game.

I’d go back again just to see them, which is the highest compliment a guest could pay.

If you can drag yourself away from the hotel it’s a short drive to Windermere or just a 15 minute walk into Ambleside, which is a really pleasant way to spend an afternoon.

But really when you’re at The Samling you don’t want to go anywhere else – it’s an experience just to be savoured.

After a great night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast we set off on our way, enjoying the final touch of a gift bag with homemade flapjacks and bottles of water for the journey.

This is hospitality at the highest level – and I for one can’t wait to return.

A STROLL UNDER THE STARS A caring couple are preparing for a stroll under the stars to raise funds for a local hospice in memory of their loved ones.

Ellie and Steve Kingston, of Darlington, will be strolling under the stars to remember loved ones at the St Teresa’s Hospice Moonlight and Memories Charity Walk

Husband and wife Ellie and Steve Kingston, of Darlington, have signed up for the first ever St Teresa’s Hospice Moonlight and Memories Charity Walk.

The pioneering hospice provides free care and support for residents of South Durham and North Yorkshire who are affected by life-limiting illness.

Ellie, 52, a former day therapy staff nurse at the Hospice, is walking in memory of her mum Mary Wilson, 71, who was cared for at St Teresa’s in 2014.

“I was working at St Teresa’s when my mum was admitted,” said Ellie. “She had been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and it took just six weeks from diagnosis until she passed away.

“It was the worst time of my life but everyone, all my friends and colleagues, were there for her and for me right up to the end. The care she received at St Teresa’s was just as it should be. Everyone looked after us like we were family and went above and beyond to make sure her final days were as comforting as possible.”

Ellie’s husband Steve, 51, a computer programmer, will be walking in memory of his wife Angela, 32, who passed away in June 2007.

“Angela and I moved to Darlington in 2005, bought a new house and were planning our wedding in Kenya for October 2007,” said Steve.

But in April 2007 Angela became ill and was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

“We were told she only had a few weeks to live and were referred to St Teresa’s Hospice where the care she received was incredible,” said Steve.

“Knowing we would never get to our wedding in Kenya the hospice staff decorated the room with palm trees and flowers to try and bring Kenya to us but Angela was too ill by this point to move so the nurses helped her to put on her wedding dress in bed, did her hair and nails and our wedding took place in her room the day before she died.”

Ellie and Steve who met each other on Facebook in 2009 and married in 2011 will be joined on the walk by their cocker spaniel dog Scarlett.

“It is so important that we continue to have a hospice in Darlington to care for terminally ill patients and every penny raised from fundraising events really does help,” said Ellie.

“Taking part in the walk is just a small way of giving something back and supporting the incredible work that the hospice does.”

St Teresa’s Hospice relies on commercial, company and individual support to help raise the £3m a year needed to maintain its free of charge services.

The Moonlight and Memories Charity Walk, sponsored by Bannatyne Health Club and Spa, is open to everyone, men,

women, children and even their dogs.

Walkers will set off on Friday October 18 at 7pm around South Park and the streets of Darlington.

Glow in the dark merchandise including glow sticks, flashing eyeball headbands and flower garlands will be available to purchase on the night, as well as gorgeous glittery tutus. A poignant feature of the event will allow walkers to leave the names of their relatives in a special memory glow garden.

LET’S SPLIT IT From Roman ruins to party islands, there’s something for everyone in the cities of Split and Hvar, as Bronia McGregor found out this summer.

Sun, sea and cocktails, what more could a girl want? This was certainly the attitude I adopted when I went to Croatia for a week, but I soon discovered that the Mediterranean holiday spot offers so much more.

After falling in love with photos of the Old Town online, Split was first on my list of the Croatian cities to visit and the real thing certainly didn’t disappoint.

By booking an apartment through Airbnb, we ended up staying in the heart of Diocletian’s Palace, meaning that we were right in the centre of the Old Town and in a perfect location to explore.

The layout can be quite confusing and it’s easy to lose your bearings, so Google Maps (or the old fashioned kind) is a must, but even with the help of the internet we spent a good portion of the first day just wandering the streets to admire how pretty the buildings are.

Everywhere you turn looks like it came straight out of a painting, with a combination of stunning architecture, charming gift and food shops, a bustling market and just a short walk to admire the gorgeous views at the harbour.

You don’t have to go far to find restaurants and bars around every corner, with very reasonable prices, offering plenty of seafood and live music to sit back and enjoy.

And, after being enticed by the beautiful pictures of Croatia’s parks, we decided to book an excursion to Krka National Park which is about a two-hour drive from Split.

I will admit I was slightly dubious about being stuck on a bus trip with 40 other visitors, but my doubts were soon quashed when we arrived and were given free rein for the day.

Walking around the park takes roughly 45 minutes, so there’s plenty of time to kick back and explore the various exhibits, take a dip by the waterfalls (and get that perfect picture for Instagram) and work on your tan.

When it came to the end of our few days in Split, we then travelled to Hvar by ferry, which runs frequently throughout the day and costs about £15 for the hour-long journey.

While I hadn’t heard of Hvar before this trip, it’s clearly a popular tourist destination, and the harbour was filled with superyachts each day – unfortunately not where we were staying while we were there.

Hvar is famous for its party island, Carpe Diem Beach, which is a short boat ride away and definitely lives up to its reputation, with full moon club nights throughout the summer, DJs playing all night and a real nightclub atmosphere.

And although a boat taxi might not seem like the best mode of transport home after a few too many drinks, it certainly keeps things interesting.

Another thing Hvar is known for is its beach clubs, which, while may not be cheap, provide sunbeds, food and drinks, music and

a private part of the water to enjoy, with a special mention to Hula Hula Beach Club for its stunning view of the sunset from the bar.

But you don’t have to spend money to make the most of the sun and sea, with lots of pebble beaches just a short walk from the main town.

In fact, the rule in Croatia seems to be that anywhere you can get to the water is a good enough place to swim, so don’t be surprised to walk along the harbour and see people making the most of makeshift sun

loungers on any rock big enough to lie down on.

And if you would rather make the most of a more traditional beach, then there are plenty of little boats along the harbour which will ferry you to one of the Pakleni islands, for restaurants, bars and crystal-clear waters, perfect for snorkelling.

So whether your dream holiday involves exploring, soaking up the sun, partying the night away, or a combination of all three, Croatia has it all.
