It was late into April 2012 before this summers annual event took place in Auckland’s Orakei Basin. As a gathering for the top skaters from around the country to battle for titles and spend a day amongst friends on the water the event proved a success for another year, with a solid group of returning skaters as well as a few new faces the banks of the basin held a number of spectators. With the autumn weather providing a few dabbles of rain in the morning the clouds remained mostly harmless and the water remained flat and warm as the juniors, open womens and open mens divisions rode into the afternoon. Flick Blackmore took home a strong win in the womens division, stepping up the level of riding with a large number of tricks not seen in that division before. In the open mens Nick Nilsson was the surprise showing of the day taking third place behind youngster Cody Tucker who despite still being able to ride juniors took out second place in Open Mens but at the end of the day it was Cam Stenning who returned to the championship position he last claimed in 2010 after taking home second in 2011.
