PARTNERS IN TIME

I’ve been reflecting quite a bit on partnerships this year. Partly, this is because it’s our 200th anniversary and our collaborations represent so much of the strength of our organization, but also because personally, one of my partners will be moving out of her long standing role and I must process that.

When I became Executive Director of the RIHS more than eleven years ago, it changed my relationship with my co workers and even some friends in the community. As odd as it may sound, I wasn’t sure how I would make new friends given how much I was at work. I didn’t have children, so no play dates. I couldn’t take my cats to the dog park and strike up a conversation. It seemed like I would have to luck into meeting someone in the course of my busy day I just didn’t know how lucky I was about to get

Not long after I began, I attended a retreat hosted by the Historic Sites Coalition. There, I met the head of the Newport Historical Society. As you know, while the NHS might be focused on one geographical point on the map, the complexity of the stories it shares makes it a force within the history and heritage field. And that vision and scope has been long overseen by the equally forceful and complex executive director, Ruth Taylor. Sure, I was a little intimidated. I’d heard a lot about Ruth and you can tell when you are in the room with her that she is comfortable being in charge. I knew I had much to learn from this one…

We struck up a conversation eleven years ago, and while there might be brief pauses in our dialogue, it has never stopped. Though our paths to our work were quite different, how we view the importance of public history, our desire to make sure Rhode Island’s profoundly important history is preserved and shared far beyond our borders, and our propensity to make each other laugh hysterically brings us together again and again It brought us together as colleagues, but quickly it was clear that we had become far more than that. She has become one of my most cherished friends.

In this past decade our institutions have grown closer than they have been in more than 160 years. When the RIHS was formed, we had a Northern Cabinet in Providence and a Southern Cabinet in Newport. But, according to the letters and minute books, the Southern Cabinet just never took off. The distance was apparently

EX OFFICIO Lane Talbot Sparkman C. Morgan Grefe, Ph.D. Charmyne Goodfellow, Deputy Executive Director for Finance & Administration Richard J. too great and the culture, too distinct. But, 167 years ago, a group of history loving individuals thought perhaps a Newport Historical Society would be more appealing to locals than a Southern Cabinet (to paraphrase Ruth, we have never aggregated well) Right they were, and soon the RIHS dissolved its Southern offices and transferred most of its Newport holdings to this newly formed organization.

Since then, we’ve pretty much been doing our own thing.

Certainly, we still do, but we also believe that our stories are much more powerful and their breadth clearly of national and international significance when told together. We have published 2 joint special issues of our journals, we have worked on joint exhibitions, such as the pocket museum in the State House, we have joined each others committees, and served on commissions together

Our institutional partnership with the Newport Historical Society has become foundational to the RIHS’s work, and we will work to continue that as they embark on their next phase, because after sixteen years, Ruth Taylor is stepping down, retiring from the Newport Historical Society. They are a strong, robust organization that we are so delighted to have in our history ecosystem. That won’t change.

But my friend won’t be there and that makes me a bit sad. I have counted on being at her side at events, parties and meetings for the last ten years, helping to make sense of things in these remarkably challenging last few years I have learned so very much from her about leadership, about people, about public history and possibilities. And I know I will keep learning from her well after she moves on to the next adventure.

Good luck, my friend. A truer partnership could not be found.

MUSEUM OF WORK & CULTURE OPENS NEW EXHIBITS FOR 25TH ANNIVERSARY

In celebration of its 25th anniversary, the Museum of Work & Culture has opened two new exhibits Each of these exhibits continues the Museum's legacy of bringing to life important chapters of RI's history in ways that are interactive, engaging, and educational for learners of all ages

The first exhibit which is a permanent addition to the Museum is called Flowing Through Time: Nature, Industry, and Communities of the Blackstone River This cutting edge, digital, interactive exhibit allows visitors to explore stories of the Blackstone River and its watershed over thousands of years by focusing on the function of the water power that made the mills possible, the communities that have lived with and been impacted by the river, and the long term ecological impact the industrial era has had on the water and wildlife

Visitors choose among the themes of “Nature,” “Industry,” and “Communities,” and travel through time along four touchscreens in an animated boat As they sail along the Blackstone River, they are presented with touchpoints that deliver content related to their chosen theme Following their journey, visitors are provided with QR codes that allow them to delve deeper into their chosen theme from the comfort of their own homes

In addition, this October the Museum has opened a temporary exhibit in its changing gallery: “Hollywood Comes to Woonsocket,” an exploration of the city's history as a prime destination for national and international performers

Over the course of the twentieth century, Woonsocket’s six theaters the Laurier, the Bijou, the Rialto, the Music Hall, the Park, and the Stadium hosted a dazzling variety of acts, including vaudeville, Francophone performers, blockbuster films, live performances, and Chan's “eggrolls and jazz ”

Today only the Stadium Theatre and Chan’s “eggrolls and jazz” remain However, both of these venues have not only kept Woonsocket’s Hollywood connections alive, but have also revitalized the city’s cultural scene in more recent years The Stadium Theatre now functions as a community arts center, making world class theater and performance accessible to wide audiences, while Chan’s continues to host acts with national profiles and local roots, such as Duke Robillard

"Hollywood Comes to Woonsocket" will be on view until February 15, 2023

RIHS ACQUIRES ARTIST'S ARCHIVE

Works of Italian American Artist Antonio Cirino To Be Available for Researchers

The RIHS is pleased to spotlight the recent acquisition of the papers of Rhode Island Italian American artist Antonio Cirino (1889 1983).

Born in the town of Serino in Avellino, Italy, at the age of two Antonio Cirino immigrated with his family to Providence. He later attended the Rhode Island School of Design, graduated in 1909, received a BS from Columbia Teachers College in 1912, and returned to RISD to teach jewelry design for 35 years (interrupted by war service in Paris as a clerk at the U.S. embassy in 1918).

Cirino co authored Jewelry Making and Design, a significant textbook on the subject, with Augustus F Rose (1873 1946), a local metal craftsman and jewelry designer

An active member of the Providence Art Club and the Salmagundi Club, Cirino was a founding member of the Rockport Art Association in Massachusetts He earned numerous awards for his painting throughout his career and his work can be found in both private and museum collections

This archive documents his philosophy on teaching and his creative process through original published and unpublished writings. There is also fascinating material related to his family history and his friendships with other artists.

The donor of the collection, New England art specialist Cathy Bert (owner of the Bert Gallery), is glad to see his papers go to the RIHS, and says of Cirino:

“Antonio Cirino's colorful and confident personality often distracted the Rhode Island art community. Many took for granted his remarkable talent even though this familiar local legend earned a national reputation. Since his death in 1983, scholars and collectors have gravitated toward his paintings, comparing him to his Rockport colleague, Emile Gruppe. A keen student of nature, Cirino painted outdoors for his entire artistic career. He was a kindred spirit to the Impressionists and focused on his own personal interpretation of nature.”

We are especially pleased and grateful that the donor fully supported the processing of the collection. This work was performed by archivist Lisa Long Feldmann, and means the archive will be available for researchers in 2023.

GET TO KNOW: PHOEBE BEAN

Having been at the RIHS for over 20 years, many people who have visited the Robinson Research Center (RRC) know Phoebe Bean from her extensive knowledge of our archives. Previously serving as Librarian, Phoebe has recently been promoted to Associate Director of the RRC.

What responsibilities come with your new title?

The new Robinson Research Center Associate Director position helps consolidate operations of the Collections Department. This means internal functions including accessioning, cataloging, preservation, and then most importantly, access for our members and patrons. I manage the RRC staff in their multiple, ongoing projects and make sure we are meeting our goals.

Do you have a particular area of interest or expertise?

My undergraduate studies were in theology and particularly the use of text in early Christianity and Islam. After a first career as a market analyst, I returned to my love of books and printing and got my Masters of Library Science. My interest and expertise is in early printed American books and manuscripts. Whether printed or handwritten, words shape and reflect the culture in which they are produced

What is your favorite collection piece you have been able to work with?

So many to choose from! I'm an early printing geek I love the paper, the typefaces, the ornaments. James Franklin was the R.I. colony's first printer; he started printing in Newport in 1727. He promptly died in 1735 leaving his widow Ann with a press and children to raise. Ann ran the press from 1735 to 1748 on her own. Anytime I get to handle her imprints I am reminded that each copy was touched by her in some way Another personal favorite that speaks to my appreciation of good data is the Gazateer of Rhode Island (sic), which was hand typed by RIHS Librarian Howard Chapin in 1931. It is a gold mine of R.I. geographical definitions that can not be found elsewhere.

Are there any current projects you can give members a sneak peak of?

We have received a new grant to participate in the Northeast Slavery Records Index (NESRI) Project

This is an innovative way to use the data found in collections like the Providence Town Papers and other resources listed in the "Guide to People of Color in the RIHS Manuscript Collections." The NESRI will help share the information contained with an international audience I am also very excited about the Early R.I. Imprints Project in which the staff and a dedicated volunteer are electronically cataloging the stellar RIHS collection of pre 1800 R.I. printed books and pamphlets.

What is the role of the Robinson Research Center within the larger context of the RIHS's mission?

The RRC serves as the first point of contact for research into the vast collections of the RIHS. It has been a collecting institution since the founding in 1822. It contains the largest genealogical collection in R I , as well as over 10 million pages of manuscripts, and 9 million feet of film among many other collections. From caring for the materials to making researcher appointments, every day the RRC staff work to honor, interpret, and share Rhode Island’s past to enrich the present and inspire the future.

What recommendations do you have for someone who wants to research at the RRC but hasn't before?

Come visit! The RRC has additional fall hours on Wednesday evenings and the second Saturday of every month. There is no charge to use the library. The reference staff is also available via email at reference@rihs org and can help researchers near and far with their R I inquiries. We happily answer about 1500 distance research questions a year.
