Introduction leader or volunteer will facilitate this experience. With the correct technical and personal skills a coach can engage a participant in activity for a lifetime. It therefore becomes vitally important that all coaches have the correct skill sets in place to deliver an enjoyable and safe experience.

Within this publication you will find a multitude of training and development opportunities to cater for you or your organisations needs, regardless of your level of experience, we offer training opportunities for all.

As part of our work to develop this support across Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire we work with leading organisations such as runningsports, sports coach UK and the National Governing Bodies of Sport to ensure everyone can access training locally. This publication is designed to respond to the needs of Coaches, Volunteers, Clubs and other Groups at a local level and additionally recognise the different requirements and needs of key partners within our sub region.

Please feel free to contact the CSW Sport office on 024 7657 4200 or info@cswsport.org.uk if you need help in accessing our Education Programmes. We are also keen to hear from you to better identify any gaps there may be within our current provision. I hope you find our Coach Education Programme a useful tool to you and your organisation’s needs.

Sport is a fantastic communicator across many levels and can help to teach valuable life skills. A first impression of sport or physical activity can be the difference between a lifetime involvement in activity or a period of inactivity. Often a coach,

Delivery should be aimed at semisporty teenagers and young adults i.e. those who may not seek out sporting opportunities themselves and would not prioritise doing sport in their own time or those who are doing sport for a very limited amount of time.

Organisations/clubs/bodies are encouraged to apply for Sportivate funding. Sportivate is a Lottery funded grants programme linked to the 2012 Olympic Legacy Strategy ‘Places, People, Play’ and aims to get more 14-25 year olds into participating in sport on a regular basis.

The focus of Sportivate will be the delivery of high quality projects with a strong sustainability element

Sportivate funding is available for projects to deliver six consecutive one hour weekly coaching sessions to give participants a taste of an activity they have not tried before, in order to engage them and encourage them to continue to participate in a community setting.

There will be two opportunities to apply for funding each year until 2015.

For further information or to discuss a potential project, please contact Ruth Owen-Evans, Partnership Development Officer (Communities & Performance), Coventry, Solihull & Warwickshire Sport. 02476 574199 or ruth@cswsport.org.uk

What are the Community Games all about? The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be the biggest sporting event ever to take place in this country. But it’s not just about two weeks of sport in London; it’s a four year cultural celebration right across the UK. Community Games are a way for you to bring your community together to take part in sporting and cultural activities inspired by, and in celebration of, London 2012, giving thousands of people across the West Midlands their own ‘Olympic moment’.

What do the Games look like? A Community Games includes both sporting and cultural events, and some sort of ceremony, ideally an opening and/or closing ceremony. The rest is up to you. So they will probably all look different – some might happen on only one day at one venue, others over a week at lots of different venues. Some will involve an element of competition; others will focus simply on getting people participating in sports or cultural activities they might never have tried before.

Are we a ‘community’? A community could be your street, an estate, your colleagues at work, a ‘friends of’ group from your local park or other public space, your faith group, your children’s school… the list goes on. A community is simply a group of people that come together at some point to share stuff.

How Community Games can help benefit your sport & club? • Raising interest and awareness • Providing opportunities to have a go • Enabling clubs to make connections in their local community • Attracting new or former participants into your sport • Hosting Community Games Events • Providing volunteers, coaches, tournament organisers for Community Games Events • Organising your own Community Games • Loaning equipment for Community Games • Signposting interested volunteers and participants to clubs

For more information and to download your Community Games toolkit, visit: www.communitygames.org.uk or contact Tracy Murphy at CSW Sport on: 02476 574441 tracy@cswsport.org.uk
