THE BECKONING

A Newsletter Raising Awareness, Prayers, & Support For Honduras Missions “And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them.” Luke 5:7

God Worked Two Miracles

The first miracle is no little miracle if you could only experience our house-hold routine. It was the miracle of one hour of uninterrupted quiet time during the day. You may be familiar with such a routine: school, meals, exercise, soccer, chores, homework, church, youth group, family devotion, etc. However, our household of four kids has recently and temporarily increased to seven kids. Our kids expressed–in my opinion-genuine Christian concern for three friends in genuine crisis. One of these friends is 15-year-old Sinai, a childhood friend to our foster kids who lived in the same poverty stricken neighborhood. When we began to minister to this group of needy “street kids” Sinai, then seven, was part of the group.

When our four kids came to live with us five years ago Sinai would often walk, even daily, to our house to visit, play, eat, attend church, etc. But, since we moved across town we have seen little of Sinai. Recently, Michell visited her family back in her old neighborhood, and saw Sinai. Sinai’s mother had recently invited a boyfriend to move-in. As Michell put it, “Sinai is suffering… and we cannot just do nothing.” Michell shared through tears that if we didn’t do something to help Sinai, then she will continue to suffer until she gets pregnant and that she’ll wind-up like most of Michell’s other girl friends from this “barrio”. A few days later Sinai is at our house sharing Michell’s room with her. Sinai has now re-enrolled into school; she loves church, and she joined in our house-hold routine “pulling her own weight” with the cleaning and cooking.

It is a blessing to see the little girls who came into our lives years ago become young ladies who today love the Lord

As you can imagine, our house stays “a buzz”, but for some strange unusual reason April 14, after Kim’s special birthday breakfast, everyone was off doing something (studying, exercising, or whatever). I was enjoying my coffee and my personal devotion time on the front porch. Sinai strolled by and quietly sat down in the chair next to mine. The Lord stirred my heart to talk with her about her personal relationship with the Lord. She was very engaged as she asked important “from the heart” questions. For nearly one uninterrupted hour we conversed. Then the second miracle happened, she told me that she was ready to surrender her life to the Lord Jesus Christ. We prayed together and she gave her life to Jesus. Afterwards, she had this confident smile that she had done what was right and that she had started something good. Both, Kim and Sinai, shared a wonderful birthday.

A Word On Finances I wish that our newsletters could only be positive reports on ministry and telling stories of kids who receive Christ. However, there is another part another type of ministry-that you and I share… managing God’s resources. As missionaries we are “sent”, and it is you who sends us. What a faith journey it is. Our missionary account (#25292) only had $190 at the end of April. During May a little more than half of what we needed (to cover payroll, international health insurance, reimbursements, etc.) was received. So, we ended May in the negative, specifically $1,728. To make things even more challenging, our special projects account (#25505) didn’t have enough for us to receive June’s budgeted amount, $1,400, for our foster kids. You see what I mean by a faith journey? It’s been nearly three decades now with YFC and God has always met our needs. Often He moves in the hearts of a few of our supporters to give an “above and beyond” gift. So, would you prayerfully consider giving extra at this time? It is much needed. Thank you

Summer Summer--Time Is Hosting Hosting--Time

This summer the Lord has us hosting families, as they join us in the mission field. During early July, Jason Fisher, his son Will (from Germantown Baptist Church), and two others that Jason has invited will be joined by Brian and Amy Burcham and their two children (from Second Baptist Church of Union City, Tennessee) for several days of primitive missionary work with the Tolupan tribe at Mt. de la Flor. Jason Fisher has taken the lead as we are planting a church at Hierba Buena, a village that has several believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, but has no functioning church. Jason’s goal is to have the young believers organized and meeting regularly as a church after we leave… either in the village school house or in the house of one of the village leaders. Jason will be leaving with them portable audio/visual equipment with several sets of church development lessons on DVD.

Father and son, Jason (on foot) and Will (on mule back) will hike to Hierba Buena for their second year of mission work with the Tolupan tribe. It is a three-to-four hour hike on the Mt. de la Flor

Cole Freeman is returning this summer, the later part of July, with his step-father, Rick Barbas. Our mission is construction and sharing our faith along the way. In addition to a few projects around the Beck house, we will head again to Tolupan country. This time we’ll visit the tribe near Yorito where Pacific Union Congregational Church of Westport, Massachusetts, is finishing a construction project… a tribal center that will also provide a setting for a fledgling Tolupan church. (Visit their web site, www.PacificUnionChurch.org/Tolupa to see more of this great work). We’ll volunteer a few days of construction with the foreman there, do some house to house visitation, and Bible teaching in the evenings.

Memphis Memphis--Area Kroger Donates $1,500

Since the spring of 2010 nearly 40 Kroger gift cards have been requested and given to supporters of Rick and Kim Beck. As these supporters reload their gift card, Kroger donates 5% to the Beck’s YFC missionary account. To date Kroger has cut five checks that total $1,500. Now that we have participated in this fund-raising program for one year, we can asses how it is working. Consider these observations: 40 gift cards have been issued $4,000.00 10-15 (~25%) of these 40 gift cards are reloaded each month Reload Amount $3,500.00 the cumulative monthly reload averages over $2,000 Kroger's Donation to YFC Kroger makes a ~$300 donation every 2-3 months $3,000.00 participation in the program during this first year is growing $2,500.00 the Becks and YFC designated this first year as a trial; minimal $2,000.00 effort was put forth. The program works and deserves more $1,500.00 attention. $1,000.00 gift cards purchase groceries, gasoline, and pharmacy items $500.00

By simply calling Ann Beck (901 767-9203) and requesting a $Kroger gift card new participants can help Rick and Kim raise more funds for their Honduran mission work. Then, every so often reload your gift card at the customer service counter -enabling you to use the card to buy Kroger groceries, gasoline, and medicine. Later, Kroger will make a donation to YFC for 5% of your reload amount. The more you load; the more Kroger donates. Last month 11 participants reloaded their gift card, which translates into a $129 donation amount. Rick and Kim would like to thank the following participants for reloading their gift card last month (mid May – mid June) enabling Kroger to give the corresponding donation: Jerry & Nina Scott Harold & Jean Dickson Unknown Karen Tipton

$30 $25 $18 $15

Ray O’Daniel Robert Dawkins Pat Patterson Teresa Harrell

$10 $10 $6 $5

Mrs. Pat Patterson Linda Miller Sandy Murphree

$5 $3 $3

Finally, please help Rick and Kim promote this program. Ann Beck will gladly give you extra gift cards for you to extend to work associates, or your church friends, neighbors, family, or whomever. Remember to strategically give them away because Rick pays the initial $5 load amount for each card. If we continue to grow this program, Kroger could easily be an annual $5,000 donor –a major donor- by next year… simply by using your gift card to buy that which you were going to buy anyway –food, fuel, pharmaceuticals.

Prayer Needs For Rick & Kim and for YFC in Tegucigalpa, Honduras

Ministry success as we host ministry partners and work together at the city-dump, and with the remote Tolupan tribe. Transportation safety as we cross rivers without bridges during the rainy season and hike muddy Mountain. trails. A particular building perfect for the YFC Tegucigalpa office, hosting interns/teams, having youth meetings, etc. That Rick and Kim’s personal house near Memphis, Tennessee, will rent soon –it is vacant, but the mortgage continues. That financial gifting will be enough during the typically low-giving months of summer to continue the mission.
