The past two years were tough for Wantagh and Seaford, but our always-resourceful people came through once again, just as we did after Hurricane Sandy's wake in 2012. Neighbors helping neighbors. That’s what Wantagh and Seaford are all about. And what they continue to be. We looked out for each other all through the Covid-19 crisis. Everyone stepped up during this challenging time: grocery stores and other necessary retailers, community organizations, civic leaders, local officials, etc. And we can never thank enough our health care workers for their selfless dedication. Now we understand just how resilient we, as a community, are.
The pandemic tested all of us beyond our limits. Wantagh and Seaford, however, remain strong. Both are communities full of fighters. And as the pandemic shifts to endemic stage and we fully resume our lives, we are all reinvigorated and re-energized.
Throughout the crisis, the Wantagh and Seaford Heralds remained steadfast in informing everyone of the impact of the pandemic, and also all of the great things individuals, stores, police, firefighters, schools and community leaders were doing to keep moving forward. Herald reporters were at meetings, and talking to you and your neighbors, to paint a portrait of communities that may have struggled at times, but that also are winning.
Richner Communications, which owns the Herald, was proud to do its part, too. Richner offered thousands of businesses marketing grants so that the merchants the lifeblood of the community could carry on.
Now that we have emerged from the pandemic with vaccines and medical advances in our arsenal, we are ready to charge ahead with optimism and renewed vigor.
In this edition of our annual Living In Wantagh and Seaford, we look at all that is wonderful about these lively hamlets. A special publication of your hometown newspaper, it’s published in cooperation with the Wantagh Chamber of Commerce and the Seaford Chamber of Commerce. We are honored to mark another year as the chambers' official publication.
We hope you find this issue useful and informative, and that you enjoy reading the Wantagh and Seaford Herald 52 weeks a year.
Be well and be safe.

Stuart RichnerWe drive them. We walk them. We live on them. We work, we play — every aspect of our lives can be tied straight back to a street. They are the heart of our community. You can't get anywhere unless you're on a street. In this year's Living in Wantagh/Seaford, we explore the very streets that make Wantagh and Seaford what they are. From the businesses, to the parks, to even the town squares. There's a story behind every street, and we hope you'll enjoy these stories, learning more about the communities all of us love.

Welcome to Seaford, where you will always have something to do, regardless of your age.
Why not start your day at one of the many parks we have in town? Cedar Creek Park was named "Best Playground of Long Island" by the Long Island Press years ago, and was judged by News 12 Long Island viewers as the best on Long Island.
While you're there, enjoy the paths that can be used for walking, jogging and bicycling, or even spend the day rollerskating. You can also head to Jones Beach or Tobay Beach using the paths in Cedar Creek Park. Want to play pickleball, baseball or kayak? If so, then head to Seamans Neck Park where all the fields have been renovated and are ready for a family day of fun.
If the family is in town, head to Tackapausha Preserve and enjoy the historic and beautiful 84acre sanctuary of oak forests, ponds, streams, small
mammals and scores of bird species — all of which can be viewed via five miles of clearly marked trails.
If walking and biking aren’t your thing, head to the Seaford Public Library. Programs for young children, teens and adults are endless. Bring your friends and family to play mahjong, read a book, take a course, or attend an outside concert. You also can enjoy the art wall on display from our very own Seaford residents. There is a program for everyone at our public library.
After your day is complete in the Seaford parks, you can enjoy one of the many restaurants and bars that are in town. You even have the option of dining at the waterfront. There is always something to do in this amazing community and the Seaford Chamber of Commerce is always willing to support and guide you.
We at the Seaford Chamber of Commerce encourage your support, guidance and commitment to keep Seaford a community united in spirit, hope and togetherness. Seaford Pride!
Margaret D. Grub President Seaford Chamber of CommerceWelcome to Wantagh: the Gateway to Jones Beach. What a wonderful and unique town we have.
Music lovers, we have our own concert hall and amphitheater. Hungry? We have so many great places to get a quick bite to eat, plan a date night, meet up with friends, watch your favorite teams, grab a sandwich on the go, coffee or tea, or celebrate life’s milestones in one of the many party rooms our fabulous eateries have.
You will not be disappointed, or leave hungry!
Whether you need a new wardrobe, purse or jewelry, found a new favorite sports player or need to update your sports equipment, we have several retail stores to find just what you need.
Let’s not forget the kids! Many parks, playgrounds, dance studios and martial arts programs are right here in Wantagh to keep them busy. Check out what our public library has to offer, too. From a large assortment of books, movies, children and adult activities and educational seminars, our library has it all!
History lovers, we have the most historical landmarks in Nassau County. Our preservation
society displays the preserved Jamaica train, museum and post office that are wondrous and a delight for all ages!
Like to garden or just need to brighten someone’s day? Visit our amazing florists and nursery.
Mark your calendars for our fabulous events! The first Sunday after St. Patrick’s Day, we host Long Island’s largest St. Patrick’s Day parade. Small Business Saturday, we have our magical Winter Wonderland Fair with wonderful crafts, food and entertainment and Santa spends the day with us and delights all.
This year we will host our inaugural golf outing at Bethpage State Park on Tuesday, Oct. 11. Please email fundraiser@wantaghchamber.com for information on all of our events.
I can go on and on about our spectacular businesses, many owned and operated by local families. Not only are they so generous to our community, but we also have essential charities that make a difference in the lives of others.
Sounds fabulous, doesn’t it? I thought so! Many of our businesses are within walking distance from the LIRR, so driving is an option.
We have something for everyone! Hope to see you soon!

One cannot think of Jones Beach without thinking of Wantagh.
Wantagh is exactly what it calls itself — the gateway to Jones Beach. Jones Beach State Park’s official address is 1 Ocean Parkway in Wantagh, and all smaller addresses within the state park are in Wantagh as well.
It is impossible to enter the state park from the east without passing through Wantagh — and sometimes Seaford — whether you take Ocean Parkway West or the Southern State Parkway onto the Wantagh Parkway South. One can try to sneak into the state park without passing through the village by taking the Meadowbrook Parkway South, passing through Freeport and Merrick. But once they’re in Jones Beach State Park, they’re in Wantagh.
Jones Beach is estimated to be the most popularly visited beach on the east coast. Existing on a barrier island, with easy access to both the Atlantic Ocean and the Great South Bay, there is no shortage of activities at Jones Beach, be it boating, water-skiing, fishing, swimming, surfing and hiking.
Fishermen, particularly on the ocean side, can enjoy catching striped bass, bluefish, fluke, sea bass, and sometimes even sharks — although experts continuously advise these are not dangerous sharks.
For those interested in ecology, there is the Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center, located on Bay Parkway. This center opened in 2020 under then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s clean energy initiative, and has grown in popularity this year.
The center is led by Jeanne Haffner and a dedicated team of environmental educators. They do activities such as beach cleanups, hikes and guest lectures. It is located a short walk away from the ocean and a short drive from the bay, meaning that they don’t have to travel far for anything.
For music fans, there is Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater, previously known as
Tim Baker/Herald photos Jones Beach is one of the most popular beaches on the east coast, with an estimated six million visitors annually.Continued from page 13
Nikon at Jones Beach Theater, and before that Tommy Hilfiger at Jones Beach Theater. It is located at 1000 Ocean Parkway in Wantagh.
This theater is Long Island’s own Madison Square Garden — tons of big names have played at this theater, with its most frequent being Jimmy Buffett, Aerosmith and James Taylor.
Swimmers can enjoy big waves on the ocean side, as can surfers. For those who prefer calmer waters, the bay side is always available, with access to this via the West End. The bay side is also frequented by people on personal
watercrafts. When there is good water visibility, even snorkelers and scuba divers can enjoy a day at Jones Beach, with tons of underwater wildlife to see.
All of this is within the borders of Wantagh, making Wantagh live up to its name as “the gateway to Jones Beach.”

Jerusalem Avenue is vital to Wantagh and Seaford — and to other communities as well.
It begins in Hempstead, ending in Massapequa, and somewhere along the way has a brief stint where it doubles as New York 105, a state highway.
But Wantagh has a unique historical claim to Jerusalem Avenue. After all, the early settlers who came here back in the days of the Merokee tribe labeled the Wantagh area as “Jerusalem,” so Jerusalem Avenue was almost like the original Wantagh Avenue.
Jerusalem Avenue connected the small town of Jerusalem, present-day Wantagh and Levittown, to the Town of Hempstead. Bellmore, Merrick, and Massapequa did not exist yet, giving Wantagh the bragging rights when it comes to Jerusalem Avenue.
Jerusalem Avenue isn’t the only point of interest to historically minded Wantagh residents. There is also Quaker Cemetery off of Wantagh Avenue, which is more rarely known
as the Jerusalem Society of Friends Cemetery. There is also the Jerusalem River, which, though not much of a river anymore, starts where.
From North Bellmore, NY-105 (Jerusalem Avenue) runs under the Wantagh Parkway before intersecting with Wantagh Avenue, which runs from north to south. The road continues its march through Wantagh, through the “Wantagh Woods” — which aren’t woods anymore — into Seaford, finally ending in Massapequa.
Places of note right off of Jerusalem Avenue include Duckpond Drive Park, close to its intersection with Wantagh Avenue, the Wantagh Woods, and Washington Avenue Park in Seaford.

In the middle of an increasingly urban Long Island, and right next to the trafficcrazy Wantagh State Parkway, lies a fragment of old Long Island.
Twin Lakes Preserve is located on Park Avenue, which runs through Wantagh and into Seaford. It also has many access points along Old Mill Road, which runs into Beltagh Avenue in the north, and Lakeview Road to the south. It is directly west of both Wantagh Avenue and the Wantagh Parkway.
What makes Twin Lakes a fragment of old Long Island? Not too long ago, Wantagh was a heavily wooded area made up mostly of farms. As a protected preserve, with a forest and ponds, it’s a window into Wantagh’s pre-urban past.
The 58-acre preserve contains three ponds, as well as a creek and many nature paths to walk.
There is Upper Twin Pond, which is divided by a peninsula into two spots — the north basin and south basin. The north basin is
larger, deeper, and has much less vegetation than the shallow south basin. The south basin flows into Lower Twin Pond, which is also shallow and full of vegetation.
In the northwest of the preserve, there is a much smaller, unnamed pond that flows into Upper Twin Pond through Bellmore Creek. Bellmore Creek separates Upper Twin Pond from Old Mill Road, creating the aforementioned peninsula.
These ponds are some of the most popularly fished spots in Nassau County, according to the state environmental conservation department. All lakes are teeming with life, and contain a naturally reproducing population of largemouth bass, chain pickerel, crappie, bluegill, catfish, and American eel. Upper Twin Pond is stocked with trout in the spring and fall, which can find their way into the other ponds.
The preserve is also a good spot for bird

watchers, who can observe swans, geese, and ducks, with the occasional osprey snatching fish from the water.
Due to its proximity to the Great South Bay, marine birds such as terns and cormorants can also be occasionally seen here.
When walking in the preserve, the nature can be mesmerizing — one can almost forget they are in a busy suburban enclave.
It truly is a window into Long Island’s preurban past, and ideal spot in which to relax.

Wantagh Avenue can be considered the hub of the hamlet of Wantagh.
Located in the middle of town, it runs north to south. To the north, it runs into Bethpage, becoming North Wantagh Avenue. To the south, it runs directly into Merrick Road, with the Wantagh Parkway being right on the other side of Merrick Road.
Roads that cross or intercept with Wantagh Avenue to the west or east are Old Jerusalem Road — named for Wantagh’s history as “Jerusalem” — Park Avenue, Beltagh Avenue — where Wantagh High School is located — Railroad Avenue, and Merrick Road, which runs through most of the South Shore.
Because of its unique position, running north-south through the entirety of Wantagh, it is the community’s major parade route. It is also where you’ll find the popular Mulcahy’s Pub and Concert Hall, and convenient to Wantagh’s Long Island Rail Road station (on nearby Railroad Avenue).
History buffs can visit Wantagh Avenue and
explore the Wantagh Museum, a historic train car, and Wantagh’s original post office. The Wantagh Preservation Society, a volunteerbased organization, relies on community support to keep the museum — and the town's history — alive.
The preservation society formed after the LIRR station was relocated 50 years ago from Sunrise Highway to Wantagh Avenue. Within the museum, visitors can explore all sorts of fascinating artifacts, including the inside of the 1912 parlor car, which was once part of the Long Island Rail Road’s Cannonball Express that ran from Penn Station to Montauk. It also hosts annual events like the annual holiday lighting ceremony.
A new event was added into the mix during this past summer: The first antique car show was held on museum grounds, with plans to continue it annually.
— Michael Malaszczyk Tim Baker/Herald photos Jerusalem Avenue is one of the many major streets intersecting Wantagh Avenue.Wantagh Park has something for everyone. Located on 1 King Road, right off of Merrick Road and the Wantagh Parkway, Wantagh Park is centrally located for residents of Wantagh, Seaford and all neighboring towns.
Merrick Road essentially serves as Long Island’s “South Shore Expressway,” and therefore all residents of Long Island can get to Wantagh Park rather easily.
Among Wantagh and Seaford’s vast array of summer-friendly waterfront activities, Wantagh Park might be considered the next best thing to Jones Beach itself.
Wantagh Park truly has it all. Do you like to play sports? Wantagh Park has a number of large fields, which are perfectly suitable for soccer, football, baseball, and the like. In addition to these wide open fields, there is a basketball court, a tennis court, baseball fields, and a roller rink.
Do you like to fish? Wantagh Park has an area designated for fishing, and sometimes you will even see people crabbing there,
pulling in bunker, bluefish, blue crabs, fluke, and pretty much anything that calls the Great South Bay its home.
Want to swim? While Wantagh Park does not have a beach designated for swimming, it makes up for it in having one of the best public pools on Long Island — it has an Olympic-sized pool, a diving pool, a training pool, and a kids’ pool. There is also a large

slide and lounging areas in the public pool section.
Do you like to walk or jog?
There are one-mile and twomile paths that go through and around the park.
Do you own a boat?
Wantagh Park has a huge marina, with designated parking spaces for boaters only, and overall great access to the Great South Bay for boaters.
Finally, all wide variety of activities appeal to all ages. Not too long ago, Legislator Steve Rhoads and the Wantagh Chamber of Commerce began drive-in movies in one of the fields as a pandemic-friendly activity. It was so popular that it turned into an annual August tradition.
And there's so much more, including summer camps, boating parties, plenty of fun all season long.
If you want a place to go near Wantagh-Seaford that’s somewhat less bustling than Jones Beach but still has a lot to do, Wantagh Park is the place you’re looking for.

Waverly Avenue is popular as a residential street in Seaford, but there is so much more to it than that.
It starts in western Seaford, close to the border with Wantagh. It runs all the way across town, west to east, before ending at Washington Avenue. It is intercepted, north to south, Seaford Avenue and Seamans Neck Road, as well as NY-135, commonly known by residents as the “Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway,” although it technically ends in Syosset.
On the east end of Waverly Avenue, is the United Methodist Church of Seaford, although its official address is on Washington Avenue. On the west end, connecting Waverly to Willoughby Avenue, is a residential area.
In the middle of Waverly Avenue lies Seaford's historic treasure. The Seaford Historical Museum — run by the Seaford Historical Society — is housed in a historic building on Waverley Avenue that dates to 1893, a near 130-year-old relic.
The building served as a schoolhouse
until 1917 when the school board decided that the school population had outgrown it. The building sat vacant for two years before becoming a firehouse in 1919, and served Seaford in that capacity until 1975.
The fire department donated it to the historical society, which then turned it into a museum.
The artifacts inside the building include old pieces of clothing, pictures, and paintings of historic Seaford, glass bottles, and gear that belonged to the “bay-men” of Seaford’s past. The most notable item in the museum’s possession is an authentic Seaford skiff, a world-famous boat model that originated in Seaford and was intended for use in the bays and marshes for hunting waterfowl, digging for clams, and fishing.
The museum depends upon community support to continue to maintain its status as a vital local resource.
