Neighbors helping neighbors. That’s what Oceanside and Island Park are all about. And what they continue to be. We looked out for each other all through the Covid-19 crisis. Everyone stepped up during this challenging time: grocery stores and other necessary retailers, community organizations, civic leaders, local officials, etc. And we can never thank enough our health care workers for their selfless dedication. Now we understand just how resilient we, as a community, are.

In this edition of our annual Living In Oceanside & Island Park, we look at all that is wonderful about these two communities. A special publication of your hometown newspaper, it’s published in cooperation with the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce. We are honored to mark another year as the chamber's official publication. We hope you find this issue useful and informative, and that you enjoy reading Oceanside/Island Park Herald 52 weeks a year. Be well and be safe. Stuart PublisherRichner P.S. The past two years were tough for Oceanside and Island Park, but their always-resourceful people came through once again, just as we did after Hurricane Sandy's wake in 2012.

Throughout the crisis, the Oceanside/Island Park Herald remained steadfast in informing everyone of the impact of the pandemic, and also all of the great things individuals, stores, police, firefighters, schools and community leaders were doing to keep moving forward. Herald reporters were at meetings, and talking to you and your neighbors, painting a portrait of two communities that may have struggled at times, but which came out winning in the end. Richner Communications, which owns the Herald, was proud to do its part, too. Richner offered thousands of businesses grants at the height of the pandemic so that the merchants — the lifeblood of the community — could carryNowon. that we have emerged from the pandemic with vaccines and medical advances in our arsenal, we are ready to charge ahead with optimism and renewed vigor.

The pandemic tested all of us beyond our limits. Oceanside and Island Park, however, remain strong. Both are communities full of fighters, and as the pandemic shifts to endemic stage and we fully resume our lives, we are all reinvigorated and re-energized.

DearTheFriends:Village of Island Park continues its renaissance with new local soandinfrastructurebusiness, upgradessmartgrowth!TheBoardandIareexcitedforallwe have planned in the coming year!  Masone Beach has seen record attendance, with so many of our young neighbors participating in programs throughout the week.  We look forward to our holiday events — including Easter, Hanukkah, Christmas and Labor Day.  The summer is a great time to shop local, eat at one of our great restaurants and catch a concert at one of our local parks. As you probably realize, our community has been the focal point of many resiliency, improvement and infrastructure projects — collaborating with partners in government to create a more sustainable Island Park.  We are also in the process of completing a critical mitigation at the Island Park Fire House, home to our bravest — men and women who work 24/7/365 to keep 11558 safe.  In 2024, the Island Park Fire Department will celebrate 100 years of dedicated service to this beautiful Village.  They have much planned to celebrate their first century and I look forward to joining them and all of you to show our love and gratitude.TheVillage of Island Park may be small, but it has a big heart and we’ve battled through hurricanes, tropical storms, flooding, pandemics and more.  I want to thank our Village workforce for moving our community forward each day. Our future is bright so stick around — visit, play, eat, drink, take in our parks and beaches and have Allfun!the best, Michael G. McGinty Mayor

Friedberg JCC thrives as Oceanside's community hub

A round the corner from the Sands Shopping Center and beyond the residential area of Oceanside Road lies a world of services for adults, children and youth, the LGBT community, those with special needs, as well as programs for managing health and fitness and a summer camp, on Neil Court. It’s the Barry and Florence and Friedberg Jewish Community Center. It’s website describes it as “the very pulse of Long Island’s South Shore Jewish community. It is an allencompassing facility, dedicated to maintaining the spirit of Judaism and its values.”However, it's much more than that. It's many programs and services offer soemthing for everyone. Among it's new initiatives is its “Boxing for Parkinson’s” program. “We were offering the Rock Steady program, which is big for Boxing for Parkinson’s,” Jackie Ruiz, the JCC's director of wellness said.

Rock Steady Boxing enables people with Parkinson’s to fight their disease by providing noncontact, boxing-style fitness programs that improve their quality of life.

“For people with Parkinson’s, it’s slower and we work with that,” Constantinos Labrinos, JCC boxing instructor said “I tell people to give me feedback and if there is anything they want to incorporate.”

She added that much like how an actual lighthouse at sea guides lost sailors to safer waters, the Liberty Lighthouse acts as a symbol of the welcoming nature of the Oceanside community, centrally located at midpoint of town.

Prior to 2007, a police booth stood at the site, called the “Veterans Triangle,” but after safety concerns forced it to move down the block, the community pondered what to put in its place. “We decided we wanted to have some type of lighthouse in the triangle,” Oceanside Chamber of Commerce Member Maria Heller said. “Between myself and fellow

J ust a short drive off Austin Boulevard on Waterford Road sits the “gem” of Island Park village — Masone Beach. It's a spot that can be described as small, quaint and serene, yet lively with activity.“It’sour own bay beach,”Trustee Barbara Volpe-Reid said. “Children enjoy the arts and crafts program and this year again we're having the sip and paint program and game nights and activities all summer. We have the Island Park School District come here for their recreation program and enjoy the beach Monday through Friday. We also have concerts throughout the summer; we just had a Captain Jack (Billy Joel tribute) concert and we're having more all summer.” She went to describe the beach’s peaceful atmosphere. “A lot of people come for a concert and say, ‘I didn’t even know this little beach existed’ and they just love it and then they come back to buy beach passes. It’s a very different type of beach, it really is. People love the beautiful sunsets and sunrises and they enjoy yoga on the beach; its a place where they can go to relax and it’s not an ocean, so parents know their kids are safe.”
