This year’s cover celebrates one of the moments that best defines Wantagh — the annual homecoming parade. Each fall, the event fills our town with energy, pride and togetherness. Students from every school take part, showing the enthusiasm and school spirit that unite our community. The parade brings out everyone — from the American Legion color guard and the Miss Wantagh Court to the marching band, cheerleaders, PTAs, and youth sports groups. Leading the way this year was retired social studies teacher and longtime game announcer Bill Bogatz, who served as grand marshal — a fitting honor for someone who has given so much to Wantagh.

And let’s not forget the spirit and dedication of local groups in Wantagh and Seaford, whose efforts bring neighbors together throughout the year.

Organizations such as the Wantagh Preservation Society, the chambers of commerce and the Seaford Wellness Council play a key role in fostering connection — whether through family festivals, fundraisers or community service initiatives. From holiday parades to summer concerts and neighborhood beautification projects, these traditions keep our communities vibrant and give residents countless reasons to gather, celebrate and take pride in the place they call home.

tep back in time and discover the rich history of your community at the Wantagh and Seaford museums. Explore a restored 1885 railroad station, a luxurious parlor car and a century-old post office in Wantagh, or see Seaford’s maritime heritage, historic schoolhouse artifacts and the century-old Seaford Skiff.

A railroad’s past comes alive at the Wantagh Museum The Wantagh Museum, operated by the Wantagh Preservation Society, offers a unique look at the town’s past through three historic structures: the Victorian Railroad Station, the “Jamaica” parlor car, and a recreated 1904 post office. Together, they provide visitors with a hands-on experience of life in Wantagh more than a century ago.

The centerpiece of the museum is the 1885 Wantagh Railroad Station. Originally located on Railroad Avenue, the station was moved to its current site in 1966 to save it from demolition during railroad expansion. Restored to its 1904 appearance, the station features displays of turn-of-the-century photographs, memorabilia, and historical exhibits. A highlight is the ticket booth, restored to honor Emma Whitmore, the first woman to serve as a ticket agent at Wantagh Station.

The “Jamaica” parlor car, built in 1912, was donated by the Long Island Rail Road in 1972.

Once a luxurious car with a solarium, cooking facilities and ice-cooled air conditioning, it was carefully transported and set on hand-hewn ties at the museum.Visitors can imagine the elegance of early 20th-century rail travel while exploring its original features.

Across from the station, the recreated 1904 Wantagh Post Office offers a glimpse into rural life in the early 1900s. The 10-by-12-foot structure shows how one person, often a local resident, handled mail for the community.

Together, these three buildings preserve Wantagh’s history, from everyday life and transportation to postal services, giving visitors of all ages a tangible connection to the town’s past.

Learn Seaford’s sailing history on Waverly Avenue For those interested in exploring the roots of Seaford, the Seaford Museum on Waverly Avenue offers an engaging journey through local history. Housed in a building dating back to 1893, the structure first served as a two-room schoolhouse, later became a firehouse, and was ultimately transformed into a museum during the nation’s Bicentennial in 1976.

Inside, visitors will find artifacts that tell the story of Seaford’s evolution from a bay and farming town to a modern community. A standout piece is the Seaford Skiff, a more than 100-year-old wooden boat built in 1910. Restored to its original form, the skiff reflects the town’s deep ties to fishing and duck hunting. Nearby, a collection of handcrafted decoy ducks demonstrates the artistry and tradition of local hunters.

The museum also preserves the building’s schoolhouse history with original desks, a globe and a coal stove once used to heat classrooms. A recreated parlor room transports guests back in time with a German organ, a working Victrola and an early telephone.

Other treasures include a stained-glass window from the original Methodist church, a red mahogany player piano complete with its original sale slip, and a time capsule sealed in 1976 that will remain closed until 2076.

Beyond the exhibits, the museum grounds feature a Heritage Walkway, where engraved stones allow residents and visitors to leave their mark. Together, these collections and displays make the Seaford Museum a hidden gem for anyone looking to connect with the history and heritage of the community.

Jones Beach State Park

rom water sports to wildlife, Jones Beach offers more than just a place to relax in the sun.Visitors can swim, bike, learn, and explore through a wide variety of activities and events.

Here are some ways to make the most of a day at the beach.

Dive into swimming and water sports Nothing says “day at the beach” quite like a refreshing swim, and Jones Beach offers plenty of options for every type of visitor.

Families can spread out at the many beachfront fields, where the Jones Beach Lifeguard Corps keeps a watchful eye to ensure a safe experience for swimmers of all ages.

For younger children or those who prefer calmer waters, Zach’s Bay is a favorite spot, with gentle waves and lifeguards on duty. Adventure seekers can bring along a surfboard to ride the ocean swells, try standup paddleboarding,

or even test their balance windsurfing. Field 10 offers yet another option, with kayaking and sailboarding available along the scenic north shore. Accessibility is also a priority — beach wheelchairs at Zach’s Bay help guests with mobility impairments enjoy the sand and water right alongside everyone else.

Take a scenic ride on the bike paths

Cyclists can enjoy year-round riding at Jones Beach, starting with a 5.4-mile path from Cedar Creek Park in Seaford to the East Bathhouse on the boardwalk. Riders can pause to stroll the beach, grab a bite at concessions, or continue along the Ocean Parkway extension — 3.6 miles to Tobay Beach with its restaurants and playground, or a longer 9.4-mile trip to Captree State Park. Restrooms are available along the route between mile markers 5.4 and 9. Closer to the sand, the two-mile boardwalk features a multi-use path, extended another 2.3 miles from Field 1 to the West End. Cedar Creek Park Cedar Creek Park in Seaford has been a Nassau County favorite since 1975, offering 259 acres of outdoor fun for all ages. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy basketball and handball courts, softball and multipurpose fields, and scenic paths perfect for walking, jogging or biking. The event’s festive vibe makes it easy to linger, whether you’re browsing vendors, catching live entertainment, or grabbing a bite from nearby restaurants.

With multiple dates throughout the season, Thursday Night Live has quickly become a highlight of Wantagh’s summer, blending small-town charm with the energy of a community-wide celebration.

Going green for the St. Patrick’s Day parade

Every March, Wantagh’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade fills the streets with green as tens of thousands gather to celebrate Irish pride and community spirit. Marching bands, fire departments, first responders, veterans, schools, and local organizations join in, creating a lively procession that stretches through the heart of town. The parade showcases a mix of tradition and local pride, with floats, music, and plenty of festive flair.

Afterward, the celebration spills into block parties along Holden Leeds/Herald Railroad and Park avenues, Wantagh’s St. Patrick’s Day parade is one of the largest on Long Island. where live music, food and entertainment keep the energy going. The event has quickly grown into one of Long Island’s biggest parades.

A Winter wonderland in Wantagh

Wantagh’s Winter Wonderland brings holiday cheer to the community, transforming the Wantagh Museum grounds into a festive gathering spot.

Families can stroll among decorated booths, shop for seasonal gifts and enjoy treats from local food vendors while carolers fill the air with music.

A chilly run for a good cause Seaford’s Hot Chocolate 5K has become a beloved winter tradition, bringing together runners, walkersand families for a morning of fitness and fun.

Starting and ending at Seaford High School, participants follow a scenic course before gathering for hot chocolate, bagels and raffles.

The event not only promotes wellness but also supports community programs, from youth initiatives to concerts and veterans’ tributes. What began decades ago with just a few hundred participants has grown into a signature event, drawing crowds in the hundreds each year. With its mix of exercise, camaraderie and seasonal cheer, the 5K embodies Seaford’s community spirit.

Its Parish Social Ministry food pantry is seeking donations of canned goods, paper products, and household items to help families facing financial hardship.Volunteers pack Thanksgiving boxes with turkeys and staples, host a holiday dinner for about 100 guests, and work year-round to deliver meals to seniors and assist families across Long Island. The parish also runs a thrift shop, where proceeds benefit local outreach programs. Contributing food, essentials, or gently used items is a simple way to make a meaningful difference for those struggling in the community.
