Herb Wallenstein is honored for 50 years of service to temple By KARINA KoVAC kkovac@liherald.com
“The world stands on three things: Study the Torah, service to God and good deeds. I always felt that’s what guides me,” Herb Wallenstein, 75, said last Sunday night at Young Israel of Ocean-side’s 66th Annual Journal Dinner. Those principals have guided Wallenstein through his 50 years of service to the synagogue, at which he was awarded the Hakarat Hatov Award. Rabbi Jonathan Muskat and Yael Muskat were also recognized, as guests of honor, receiving a tribute for their efforts to elevate the shul.
Instrumental in rebuilding the shul after Hurricane Sandy, Wallenstein traveled to nearby towns to send asking for assistance to agencies near and far, including photos and videos of the immense damage the storm did to the building, including flooding. In a slideshow at the dinner, photos showed Torahs and other documents spread out across pews to dry. The synagogue’s president, Benji Alper, spoke about Wallenstein’s contributions to the congregation, and to Oceanside. “He’s been entrusted to negotiate some of the most sensitive shul contracts to raise funds for families who have fallen on hard Continued on page 14
