They are members of an increasingly popular mentoring-through-sports program called The Town Elite, which was started three years ago by Hempsteadborn community organizer Larry Gore.

Nassau County legislators are hoping to better protect youth athletes with Robbie’s Law — legislation that would make it mandatory for all county fields to be equipped with an automated external defibrillator to help victims of sudden cardiac arrest.
Legislator Seth Koslow, a Democrat who represents parts of Merrick, Bellmore and Freeport, introduced the initiative for the portable electronic AED last week at Eisenhower Park’s ball fields. There is currently no requirement for county fields to have an AED, although park offices, such as the one in Eisenhower Park, are normally equipped with one.
RThe legislation is named in honor of Robbie Levine, a 9-year-old Merrick boy who died from sudden cardiac arrest in 2005 while playing baseball. His parents, Jill and Craig Levine, founded Forever 9–The Robbie Levine Foundation, a nonprofit that provides AEDs and CPR training to youth athletic organizations and other community groups.
the legislation, emphasizing that equipping county fields with AEDs could enhance safety for everyone — especially youth athletes.
“Twenty years ago, Jill Levine lived that tragedy,” Koslow said, in reference to her son’s death. “We’re here to make sure that no parent has to suffer the tragedy that Jill suffered.”
Most portable devices cost around $500, Koslow said, and Nassau County maintains roughly 200 fields, bringing the total cost of the initiative to around $100,000 — a small dent in the county’s $4.2 billion budget.
Other municipalities on Long Island, like Suffolk County, have AED legislation in place, Koslow explained, and a state law requires athletic leagues with five or more teams to have an emergency plan to respond to victims of cardiac arrest.
obbie didn’t get a second chance. This bill makes sure another child will.
JILL LEVINE Co-founder Forever 9–The Robbie Levine Foundation
“Not only am I a legislator, but I’m also a dad and a Little League coach,” Koslow said at a July 7 news conference. “I’ve spent countless hours on fields, watching kids play — and just the thought of that one moment where a kid falls and they need help because they’re suffering a cardiac emergency, and the fact that there’s a chance they won’t get the help they need because there’s no defibrillator nearby, could mean a tragedy.”
Also attending the news conference were members of the legislature’s minority caucus and Jill Levine to advocate for
During the news conference, an adult softball game was taking place on one of the fields — and Koslow said there’s no way to know if they’re associated with a league, or if its participants are members of the public.
“These parks are open to the public,” he said. “If you don’t have a five-team league, you have no requirement to have an AED here.”
During a cardiac emergency, accessing an AED in a Nassau County park’s office could be difficult — and the time it takes to call for help could mean the difference between life and death, he stressed. Robbie’s Law aims to eliminate that uncertainty, ensuring that no parent, athlete or member of the public has to worry about getting hold of the lifesaving device.

Village of Hempstead Mayor Waylyn Hobbs Jr. took a break from a busy schedule to see what was growing in the garden at Kennedy Memorial Park on 335 Greenwich St. Master gardener Mary “Miss Mary” Crosson gave the mayor a tour of the various beds to show off tomatoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, collard greens and a host of other vegetables and even some flowers. It is a donation garden and anyone can come by Monday through Friday and be given some of whatever is being harvested that day. The latest harvest included tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots and collard greens. Crosson and her volunteers can be found at the garden Monday through Friday.
Jr., along with Village staff and volunteers, distributes cold water to seniors at Totten Towers to help combat extreme summer heat.
Children attend classes at the garden Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Thursday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. but anyone can come at any time to receive gardening advice. Volunteers are always
welcome and Crosson said donations of bags and drinking water and snacks for youngsters are particularly appreciated. For more information, call Kennedy Memorial Park at (51) 489-3400. — Kepherd Daniel

hardly be more well-deserved, given what it has achieved.
Gore started The Town Elite, a weekly basketball clinic for youth ages 11-18, in Mirschel Park, which is located in the village’s northwestern sector, near the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and the longtroubled Terrace Avenue.
By inviting youth from one of Hempstead’s toughest neighborhoods, Gore engaged their friends and their families in a safe activity where he and fellow coaches could provide mentoring, fellowship among the families — and food. Gore invests his own money into the effort, and receives donations from supporters, to minimize any cost to the children who come.
“We just did two safe summers, no gunshots on Terrace Avenue,” Gore announced at a Peace Day event with SNUG (Should Never Use Guns) last November. “For 10 weeks, every Wednesday, we fed our kids for free, for next to nothing.”
In his first summer, Gore said, “Mirschel Park Wednesdays” drew in 30-40 youth weekly. This year, because Mirschel Park is under construction for a comprehensive upgrade, Gore expanded the clinics to meet twice a week: Mondays at Campbell Park (75 Evans Avenue) and Wednesdays in Lincoln Park (28 E. Graham Avenue).
coaches form them into teams according to age. Three games are played each night.
The Town Elite’s reputation has grown so much that participants have been coming from surrounding areas, even as far away as Wyandanch.
“We’ve got a team from New Hyde Park,” said Gore. “Every Monday and Wednesday, the teams we form in Hempstead, outside teams play against them.”
With the youth come their families.
“We started at Mirschel Park so families could come right over from Terrace Avenue and see their kids play,” said Gore. “Now parents bring their lawn chairs to Campbell Park and Lincoln Park. It’s a good time.”
The remarkable growth of the program is attributable to Gore’s unrelenting energy and longstanding connections. Always a sports lover, he coached the Hempstead Tigers, a team of elementary-age children, for the Nassau County Youth Football League, 2009-2017, winning the championship four times.

He then volunteered with Don Ryan’s Salvation Army basketball clinic, then became a mentor with The One Through the One at the Percy Jackson Youth Center on South Franklin Street. In 2022, he decided to combine his love of sports with his love of mentoring, and The Town Elite was born.
Through constant attendance at community events such as Peace Day with SNUG and Mental Health Awareness Day
at Kennedy Memorial park, and by getting to know the people he encounters in his job as a commercial and school bus driver, Gore increases his own outreach for the sake of the village that he loves. Now 14 or 15 volunteer coaches come alongside him on Mondays and Wednesdays. Every week before one of the games, Gore and his colleagues share some talk time with the players. They discuss the importance of making wise decisions so as to have a safe summer outside of the basketball court.
On Saturday, August 23, from noon to 6 p.m. at Lincoln Park, this year’s program
will conclude with a community day that will include two basketball tournaments. Papu and Gerson Sidana, proprietors of GB’s Sneaker Terminal, will be on hand to distribute trophies and free sneakers to the tournament winners. Gore is quick to say that his efforts are not solo but are supported by the many in his network. He sees his life of mentoring as passing on what was given to him.
“I grew up on Terrace Avenue,” Gore said. “It’s a place that was always looked at as negative. Good people come from there and I want to be one of those people.”

A Hempstead man was arrested in the early hours of July 17, after Nassau County police said he was driving under the influence with a 3-month-old child in the vehicle.
Police officers saw a silver 2005 Jeep allegedly commit a traffic violation around 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of West Windsor Parkway and Long Beach Road in Oceanside.
Officers initiated a traffic stop and found the driver, 38-year-old Denis Peraza Martinez of 565 Fulton Ave, showing signs of intoxication.
Police said Martinez had glassy eyes and smelled of alcohol. After administering a standard field sobriety test, which he failed, officers placed him under arrest without incident.
A 3-monthold girl was in the vehicle at the time. She was unharmed and released into the care of a family member who was also a passenger in the car. No injuries were reported.
Martinez is charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated (child under 16) under Leandra’s Law, endangering the welfare of
a child, driving while intoxicated, and a vehicle and traffic law infraction.
He pleaded not guilty had his license suspended and was released on his own recognizance. His next court date is Aug. 21, and the Legal Aid Society of Nassau County is representing him.

year in the United States, and survival rates plummet if defibrillation isn’t administered within the first few minutes, according to the minority caucus.
Legislator Olena Nicks, who’s also a member of the Uniondale Fire Department, emphasized the importance of having an AED in public locations.
“As a volunteer firefighter and first responder, I’ve seen firsthand the life-ordeath difference a few seconds can make,” Nicks said. “When someone’s heart stops, every moment counts. An AED on site can mean the difference between a tragedy and a second chance.”
The legislation, she said, is “proactive government,” which is what Nassau County residents want and deserve.
Over the foundation’s 20-year history,
Levine said her organization has donated AEDs to every state in the country. Now they’re designed so that even a young child can administer care as the machine speaks to users and walks them through the steps needed to save a life.
“Robbie didn’t get a second chance,” she said. “This bill makes sure another child will.”
Robbie’s Law has been formally introduced in the Nassau County Legislature, and the Republican majority now has to bring it to vote, Koslow said. The legislature’s next meeting is slated for July 28 at 1 p.m. at the county’s headquarters in Mineola.
