The past two years were tough for Baldwin, but its always-resourceful people came through once again, just as we did after Hurricane Sandy's wake in 2012. Neighbors helping neighbors. That’s what Baldwin is all about. And what it continues to be. We looked out for each other all through the Covid-19 crisis. Everyone stepped up during this challenging time: grocery stores and other necessary retailers, community organizations, civic leaders, local officials, etc. And we can never thank enough our health care workers for their selfless dedication. Now we understand just how resilient we, as a community, are.
The pandemic tested all of us beyond our limits. Baldwin, however, remains strong. It is a community full of fighters. And as the pandemic shifts to endemic stage and we fully resume our lives, we are all reinvigorated and re-energized. Throughout the crisis, the Baldwin Herald remained steadfast in informing everyone of the impact of the pandemic, and also all of the great things individuals, stores, police, firefighters, schools and community leaders were doing to keep moving forward. Herald reporters were at meetings and talking to you and your neighbors, to paint a portrait of a hamlet that may have struggled at times, but one that also is winning.
Richner Communications, which owns the Herald, was proud to do its part, too. Richner offered thousands of businesses marketing grants so that the merchants the lifeblood of the community could carry on. Now that we have emerged from the pandemic with vaccines and medical advances in our arsenal, we are ready to charge ahead with optimism and renewed vigor.
In this edition of our annual Living In Baldwin, we look at all that is wonderful about this lively community. A special publication of your hometown newspaper, it’s published in cooperation with the Baldwin Chamber of Commerce. We are honored to mark another year as the chamber's official publication.
We hope you find this issue useful and informative, and that you enjoy reading the Baldwin Herald 52 weeks a year.
Be well and be safe.

Foxhurst Estate, which overlooked Silver Lake Park, was originally owned and named after John Fox, who served two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives between 1867 and 1871, and a year in the state senate in 1874 .
The estate no longer exists, and although not much is known about the congressman, his estate’s name had a significant impact on the local streetscape with both Foxhurst Road and Foxhurst Avenue, which intersect near the park.
Although the physical estate is not in Baldwin anymore, some is known of the rowdy nights spent there by another owner — Frank Tinney. An early 20th century vaudeville comedian and Broadway actor, Tinney was at the height of his fame hosting parties for notable Hollywood stars such as Will Rogers. That was until Tinney was arrested at his Baldwin home on the night of May 29, 1924.
Accused of brutally assaulting Ziegfeld
Follies dancer and mistress Imogene “Bubbles” Wilson after he discovered her alone in her apartment with a newspaper reporter, Tinney was never formally charged with a crime, despite the physical evidence of bruises. But the publicity in the local newspapers ruined

He left Baldwin on Aug. 6, 1924, to sail for England. It was the same day his wife, Edna Davenport, filed for divorce, and a few hours after he broke a press photographers’ camera for trying to snap of picture of him and Wilson leaving a New York nightspot together.
Now, the area is considered tranquil and a good place for children to play, and for cyclists to ride.
Silver Lake Park is part of a joint state and county multi-million dollar flood-prevention and resiliency project, where the park will receive a few infrastructure improvements, including a fish passage to Caroline’s Pond that was named in memory of Caroline McCahon in June. McCahon spent most of her life in Oceanside, where she graduated high school, before moving to Baldwin, frequented the pond during her lunch breaks. She was just 27 when she died in 1990.

In contemporary times, Grand Avenue remains one of Baldwin’s busiest roadways from the Southern State Parkway, across Sunrise Highway all the way south to Merrick Road.
Stepping back into the community’s past, the Baldwin Inn was at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Merrick Road. Francis Baldwin, whose family ultimately gave the community its name, was an early settler and well-known member of the Assembly in Albany. He owned the inn, which did not survive the passage of time.
The community was officially founded as Baldwinsville in 1855, named in honor of Thomas Baldwin, Francis’ father and a sixthgeneration member of the Baldwin family. Entrepreneurs by nature, the Baldwins owned a general store named T. Baldwin and Son, the inn, and a sawmill that Thomas operated by Silver Lake just southeast of the inn.
A decade after being called Baldwinsville,
the South Side Railroad began operating a station in the hamlet, which was still part of Queens. After two reorganizations, the railroad merged with the Long Island Rail Road in 1889.
Baldwinsville was changed to Baldwins by Tim Baker/Herald photos Grand Avenue houses the shopping district of Baldwin, where shopping local benefits not only the local economy, but the community, too.the U.S. Postal Service to avoid confusion with an upstate community that shared its name. By 1892, an act of local government officially changed the name of the Long Island community to Baldwin.
Today, Grand Avenue remains one of the primary roads through community. As part of the state’s downtown revitalization initiative, planned upgrades to façades and signage, and style changes to the existing buildings are expected to create a new and more pleasing aesthetic to attract more people to the community.
With the plans to redevelop the retail space at 1891 and 1893 Grand Ave., and build a mixed-use development at 2130 Grand Ave., as well as 2134 and 2138 Grand Ave., Baldwin’s grand roadway could become a 21st century center of hustle and bustle.

After returning from the Civil War, military veteran George Sumner Kellogg needed a permanent place to lay his head peacefully. He sought land near Queens County, and landed on the promising Baldwin area.
He aimed to build a grand Queen Annestyle house at 960 Merrick Road. At that time, Merrick Road was the only road running between Long Island and Brooklyn. Wood planking for horse-drawn carts was introduced later in the 1860s.
Kellogg enlisted the help from a young upand-coming Queens architect Walter Halliday for the extensive and ornate project. Between 1899 and 1901, they designed and labored to bring ideas to life during Baldwin’s first residential building boom.
The building's irregular form, unique window placement, stained-glass windows, wraparound porch, and mixture of decorative wood building materials from the time period are the only visual aids of the turn of the
century Merrick Road grand homes visible today.
Over the years, many grand houses on larger lots were razed and replaced by subdivisions or commercial properties. Others have been altered or demolished to make room for more contemporary development.
However, prevailing over all the odds more than 100 years later, the Kellogg House was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 2017, becoming Baldwin’s first historic site — and the ninth in the Town of Hempstead at that time. There are now 35. Although not currently open to the public, passersby can glimpse into the past while walking along Merrick Road.
Placement on the national registry saved the Kellogg House from becoming a victim of progress. It was slated to be demolished
Tim Baker/Herald photos Top: The Kellogg house was completed by Civil War veteran George Sumner Kellogg in 1901, and has been a part of Baldwin ever since.then replaced with the Nassau County Police Department’s 1st Police Precinct building. The precinct is now next to the house in Baldwin, sharing the parking lot.
Recognized as a historic place gave a second life to the house as grants can — and have been — obtained for its preservation. Although the process of restoring the centuryold home was delayed due to Covid-19, the Baldwin Historical Society is reinvigorated to delicately restore a tangible piece of Baldwin’s history.
Their dream and vision would be to turn
the home into a community center, where Baldwinites could gather for myriad events.
Breathing new life into the home has been a labor of love for quite a while, but with the pandemic loosening its grip, now could be the chance Kellogg’s house becomes reborn as vibrant and charming as it once was.

Karina Kovac/Herald file All Saint’s Episcopal Church in Baldwin embraces a variety of cultures.Established in 1915, the Church of St. Christopher’s on Merrick Road was named after the patron saint of travel. It places its blessing on travelers heading across Long Island, or west to New York City.
Each year, St. Christopher’s extends its blessings out of the Roman Catholic Church and into the streets of Baldwin. On the sidewalk, priests sprinkle holy water on passing motorists, wishing them safe travels and protection for future journeys. The ceremony is so well known — lines form for several blocks as drivers wait their turn for their vehicular baptism
With the Catholic population in Baldwin blooming to roughly 70 families in 1912, these founders petitioned Bishop Charles McDonnell, the second Bishop of Brooklyn, for a house of worship. That same year, McDonnell established a mission church in Baldwin attached to Our Holy Redeemer in Freeport. Land at the intersection of Gale Avenue
and Merrick Road was bought for $5,000 — $150,000 today — and U.S. Rep. George W. Loft, owner of nearby Loft Estates, pledged an added $5,000 to raise funds for the purchase. Loft would continue in real estate, and in 1938, would subdivide 40 acres of his Baldwin estate to build 12 luxury homes.
It was McDonnell who wanted this new

St. Christopher was designated a shrine church. By the 1920s on every July 25, cars would line a then much narrower Merrick Road for the blessing of the automobiles. People would make a pilgrimage here from all over to have their vehicle blessed at St. Christopher’s Shrine.
