The South Side Railroad was the first train line to pass through Baldwin in 1867. Three decades later South Side merged with the Long Island Rail Road.
In 1871, the Long Island community known as Baldwinsville had its name changed by the United States Postal Service to Baldwins so as to not be confused with upstate Baldwinsville.
The South Shore community’s name was officially changed to Baldwin in 1892.
The Baldwin Fire Department was founded in 1896.

From 1939 to 1960, Baldwin was the largest unincorporated hamlet in the state until Levittown surpassed it in 1960.
Dee Snider, the flamboyant lead singer of the rock band Twisted Sister graduated from Baldwin High School in 1973.
Nunley’s Amusement Park closed in 1995.
In 1940, Nunley’s Carousel and Amusement Park
opened on the border of Baldwin and Freeport on Sunrise Highway. The carousel is now a permanent attraction at the Long Island Children’s Museum in Uniondale.
Baldwin was voted No. 25 out of 100 Top Places
to Live and No. 1 on Long Island by Money Magazine in 2006.
Brothers Albert and Arthur Heinrich built and flew the first successful monoplane in 1910 on a field that is now Plaza Elementary School.
During the 1950s, Meadowland was filled in
to construct more homes to accommodate a booming population .
In 2009, Baldwin held its
first-ever fireworks show, becoming one of the few non-villages in Nassau County to do so.
