ICE STORM CLEANUP

Public Property – Cleanup of downed or damaged Town trees that pose an immediate hazard is a priority and is ongoing. It is expected to continue until the end of February. To report downed trees on public property, call Access Richmond Hill at 905-771-8800.

A focused cleanup of tree debris along streets is ongoing. Staff are focusing on the hardest hit areas ďŹ rst. A roadside tree debris cleanup map can be found on the Town’s website. Please be advised that staff will return at a later date to remove any debris that is encased in ice and snow. It is expected that cleanup will take several weeks to complete.

Residents can expect delays in tree cleanup areas such as parks, woodlots, open spaces and non-hazardous residential and commercial areas. Whenever possible, please avoid woodlots, trails, parks and open spaces until these areas have been fully addressed and any hazards removed.

Private Property – Residents are asked to bring larger branches to the curb and the Town will take them away and/or chip the material. Please do not place yard waste in ditches as it could block culverts and impede drainage. Please place the chopped portion/cut edge of branches/limbs towards the road, as it will assist crews with the cleanup.

TREE MAINTENANCE Residents and businesses with damaged trees on their private property are encouraged to consult with a professional arborist (found in the Yellow Pages and other business directories).

The Tree Preservation By-law requires a permit be obtained to cut down trees on private property with a diameter of 20 cm or more. If you believe your tree is a hazard, please photograph the damaged parts and send the images with your permit application to access@richmondhill.ca, or bring them to the 8th oor, Main Municipal OfďŹ ces. Staff will respond in priority sequence. Permit fees are not required for extensive ice storm damage.

Election Contributions The Town of Richmond Hill does not participate in a contribution rebate program. Are taxes — and tax hikes — necessary evil in society?

Minimum wage and tax hikes are dirty words to many of you.

hether it’s the positive social aspects of paying taxes or the hot-button byelection issue of minimum wage in the Thornhill byelection, the Social Planning Council of York Region is weighing in on issues that matter to you.

What? There’s a positive aspect to paying taxes, you ask?

The council is presenting what it calls an evening of reflection and dialogue as part of a book launch Feb. 26 in Richmond Hill for Tax Is Not a Four-Letter Word.

Written by a variety of contributors, it provides a “different take on taxes in Canada” and provides “new information on how taxation, and our thinking about it, has evolved ... presenting data that sets out what we get for what we pay and what we lose when we pay less.”

Considering the tax-cutting mantra of politicians such as Toronto’s Rob Ford, and Richmond Hill politicians such as Carmine Perrelli and Greg Beros, those are fighting words.

No one enjoys paying taxes, but most agree taxes help pay for the social safety net Canadians take pride in, as well as local services our municipalities can’t do without, such as snow plowing, garbage collection, fire services and parks, to name a few.

The social planning council also took public umbrage at comments of a byelection candidate in Thornhill that seemed to suggest few residents in the riding subsist on minimum wage.

Residents and commentators in the GTA took to social media and letters pages to argue with the premise that most people living in Thornhill are well off or don’t make a living on minumum wage.

The social planning council wants you to know that, indeed, there are residents in Thornhill (both Markham and Vaughan) who live in poverty.

She noted that “precarious” or part-time, low-paying or contract work was highest in York Region at 21 per cent among the all the Regions of Toronto, Hamilton, Peel, Halton and York.

“Poverty is definitely a serious issue in the riding of Thornhill and also a greater issue than in some other parts of York Region.

When one in seven residents of the riding live in poverty, it is more than likely that a few have full-time jobs at minimum wage, since those working full-time at minimum wage still live 19 per cent below the poverty line,” wrote Ms Taylor.

If you’re on the side of cutting taxes, you’ll say this is positive proof that residents in Thornhill — or Richmond Hill or Markham, for that matter — can’t afford to be hit with higher taxes in their municipalities.

You’ll say this is further ammunition for those who urge that Richmond Hill and Markham councils, poised to hike taxes by 2.04 per cent and 2.49 per cent respectively, should, instead, cut taxes.

Then there are those who say taxes are a necessity to underpin the good life, amenities and social service safety net we tap into when we are on the wrong side of the poverty line.

Agree or disagree, come be part of the discussion at the book launch.

BOTTOM LINE: Taxes pay for the

very social safety net helping those surviving on minimum wage.

The April 9, 1914 edition of The Liberal newspaper carried the following announcement: “A meeting for the purpose of organizing a Horticultural Society will be held in Foresters’ Hall, rear of Masonic Hall, next Monday evening. All people over 18 years of age are eligible for membership. As we now have three florists doing business on a large scale, it is right and proper that we should have a society to encourage the beautifying of our town with flowers and shrubs. Everyone will be welcome at the meeting Monday evening. Ladies specially invited.”

We are rapidly approaching 100 years since the publication of that original notice and, as many readers already know, the Richmond Hill Garden and Horticultural Society has continued its mandate of beautification of the town and a lot more.

So if we seem to have a bit of a spring in our step, I

believe it is well deserved.

After all, this is a very important event both for the society and for the town and we look forward to celebrating it with you over the coming months.

Stating that “misinformation” is the root cause of the outcry by veterans over federal veterans services, Richmond Hill MP Costas Menegakis is weighing in on the issue.

“There has been a great deal of misinformation on the recent changes to Veterans Affairs Canada service locations, which is unfortunately creating concern for veterans and their families,” said Mr. Menegakis.

“The Government of Canada is deeply committed to those who have proudly served their country.

The facts are that Canada’s veterans are far better served today than at any other time in history.”

In a media release, he makes the case that the government has expanded service options so that those wishing a face-to-face meeting can get one closer to home as opposed to having to travel, in some cases, great distances.

“Veterans in Richmond Hill, for example, can go to the Richmond Hill Service Canada office at 35 Beresford Dr. instead of travelling to Toronto,” said the MP. He noted that in the past, there were 68 points of service for veterans across Canada, including 35 operated by Veterans Affairs Canada.

COSTAS MENEGAKIS: Says Harper government has actually increased services to veterans.

Now, despite the recent muchpublicized closure of regional offices, he said there are 644 points of service including 27 operated by Veterans Affairs Canada and 584 operated by Service Canada.

Each Service Canada location has workers specially trained and knowledgeable about services for veterans, he said.

“Some reports have confused the closing of eight lightly-used Veterans Affairs Canada office points of ser-

vice with a lessening of total services,” said Mr. Menegakis. “The reality is that the relocation of office staff in these eight offices is not a reduction of services for veterans and, in fact, is quite the opposite.”

Mr. Menegakis, who is parliamentary secretary to the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, stated that current annual funding to veterans through Veterans Affairs Canada is $3.64 Billion, compared to $2.8 Billion when the Conservative Government took office in 2006. The federal government, under Prime Minister Stephen Harper, has since invested nearly $4.7 billion in new funding to enhance benefits, programs and services for veterans.

“Year over year, our spending on support and services has continued to increase as a marked demonstration of our deep commitment to delivering for veterans,” said the MP. “While 90 per cent of veterans come home without any need from Veterans Affairs, not all veterans make a smooth transition and some become at-risk or homeless. Our government is dedicated to helping ensure that all of our veterans get the assistance they need and deserve.”

The federal government has also opened 17 operational stress injury

clinics and 24 integrated personnel support centres near Canadian Forces bases and in major city centres across the country.

The government has also partnered with community-based organizations to help deliver services and recently announced a doubling of contribution rates to the Burial Services Fund.

“Our government will continue to work hard to serve our veterans as well as they have served Canada,” said Mr. Menegakis.

A third candidate has officially registered for the hotly contested mayoral race in Richmond Hill.

Sridhar Reddy Methuku, a resident who has made frequent delegations at council in recent years, has joined current Ward 2 Councillor Carmine Perrelli and former mayoral candidate Anastasios Baxevanidis in the race for the top council job.

Ward 2 seems to be drawing the most interest among would-be candidates, with Ted Leider registering last week in the campaign, joining Stan Daneman and Marjan Moridi-Arcuri.

And yesterday, former Ward 3 councillor David Cohen registered as a candidate for regional council, joining Joe DiPaola in the race for the two regional posts. Mr. Cohen served a total of 22 years as councillor for Ward 2. In 2010 he ran for a regional council spot, but was unsuccessful.

5 victimized in cellphone store robbery in Richmond Hill Five people were confined to a storage room at a Richmond Hill Rogers store during an armed robbery Saturday.

York Regional Police responded to a robbery at the Hwy. 7 and Leslie Street store at about 10 a.m.

Two men, armed with a gun and a knife, had ordered the workers into the store room and robbed them of their cellphones and several high-end devices on sale.

Police are looking for two black men who are six-feet tall.

Richmond Hill lawyer charged with fraud York Regional Police have laid fraud charges against a man who lives in Aurora.

Police began an investigation last November after receiving a complaint of misappropriation of funds at a Richmond Hill law firm.

The investigation revealed a man had defrauded the company.

The man is believed to have opened an office in Richmond Hill, but was practising law without a licence.

Feb. 4, a search warrant was executed at the man’s office and Aurora home where they seized cash and documentation related to fraud.

Four vehicles were also seized.

A 34-year-old man faces five counts of fraud over $5,000 and one count each of forgery and uttering forged documents.

Crazy Town author appearing at Richmond Hill library

It could be the ultimate in ironies.

Robyn Doolittle, the author of Crazy Town; The Rob Ford Story, one of the hottest books to hit GTA library bookshelves, will be visiting Richmond Hill Central Library next week.

Libraries, of course, were notoriously high on Rob Ford’s cost-cutting hit list in the City of Toronto.

They were saved from the chopping block after public outcry and now they’re busy loaning out this bestseller about the controversial mayor.

“Gravy”, it seems, is getting its groove back.

As for the book itself, it looks like it won’t be on the library shelves for a while, given the lengthy list of those waiting to check it out.

The Richmond Hill library has three copies, another on the way, and 15 holds — an indication of just how popular is this tome about Toronto’s well-known politician.

The public library system in Toronto has 144 copies, with more than 1,000 patrons waiting to snag a copy.

In Vaughan libraries, there are 37 holds for the book, in Markham, 54 on the waiting list.

And with news that two major movie producers have picked up the rights to Crazy Town, Ms Doolittle’s book promises to remain on the must-read list for a while to come.

MAKING CHOICES The City of Markham approved its budget this week with a 2.49-per-cent tax hike. Right now, the draft Richmond Hill operating budget shows a 2.04-per-cent hike tax hike. As this chart from Markham depicts, it’s among the lowest approved or proposed hikes in the GTA.

Budget meeting set for next Thursday Want to learn more about how your tax rate is set and where the dollars go?

A special public council meeting to debate the 2014 operating budget is set for next Thursday.

The operating budget consists of expenses that cover day-to-day activities or operations.

Once approved by council, it establishes the annual tax rate. The draft budget currently shows a 2.04-per-cent tax increase.

The meeting will take place in council chambers, on the first floor at 225 East Beaver Creek Rd., Feb. 20 at 4 p.m.

Council meetings are open to the public.

Delegates must register with the clerk’s office by noon that day in order to speak during the

meeting.

Public consultation for the operating budget took place in December and January. A 2014 budget survey for residents was also available online.

Residents are also encouraged to send suggestions (i.e. ways to save money and generate revenue, thoughts on existing service levels, etc.) by emailing budget@richmondhill.ca or calling 905-771-8800 (ext. 3685 or 3656).

York Symphony Orchestra goes back to nature in the next concert series, this Saturday and Sunday.

In Natureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Realm is a double concert performance in Aurora and Richmond Hill that will feature Andrew Ascenzo, a York Region native, who will play Edward Elgarâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cello Concerto, reflecting the pastoral quiet of the English country cottage where the piece was written.

Denis Mastromonaco, York Symphony Orchestraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s music director, will conduct the upcoming concerts.

Other works in the program include Dvorakâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Czech Suite and Schumannâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Symphony #3 The Rhenish, both evoking a particular sense of place dominated by nature.

Mr. Ascenzo is currently the principal cellist of the Koffler Chamber Orchestra and he also holds a masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree in cello performance from the University of Toronto.

As an active songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Mr. Ascenzo is a diverse performer who regularly performs with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Michelle Wright, and Torontobased folk band Arosa Star.

Is she a dog, or is she a doctor?

Nara, the yellow labrador retriever, galumphs toward a guest with tail-wagging, nose-sniffing puppy-like enthusiasm.

You would never know it, but this pup is a highly trained life-saver.

Nara is just a year old, but already knows just what she needs to do to be sure her teenage owner doesn’t lapse into a diabetic coma.

She can detect high blood sugar levels, call for help and bring food or a blood-testing kit should his blood sugar level drop to dangerous levels.

“I love her,” Alex Bevilacqua says with a grin, wrapping his arms around his new best friend.

For as long as he can remember, the 17-yearold wanted a dog, but his parents didn’t like the idea of all that shedding fur.

Now they have accepted that a few fur balls are well worth it.

“She is a beautiful angel watching over him,” says Alex’s mother, Silvia Monacelli.

The Oak Ridges family is one of the first in Canada to bring home a diabetic alert dog guide.

The Lions Foundation of Canada launched the diabetic alert dog guide program in November, providing four specially trained dogs to patients with Type 1 diabetes with hypoglycemic unawareness.

That’s the type of diabetes Alex was diagnosed with at age 7. His body doesn’t alert him when his blood sugar levels are dangerously low and it has caused him and his family some scares recently.

It happened first when he was visiting his grandparents in Italy last summer, when he suf-

A week after he returned, in late August, he walked down the stairs into his kitchen and “I literally flew across the floor”.

That seizure caused him to bite his tongue, bang his head, and he woke up covered in blood.

diabetes is to eat something high in glucose, sucrose or fructose.

Alex doesn’t always get those signals.

The seizures shook him up. He’s still sometimes afraid to fall asleep, with a worry in the back of his head that he may not wake up.

“It can be really dangerous. You can die.”

The Lions Foundation, which trains 250 service puppies a year, hopes Nara can help.

This winter, Alex was selected to have one of four trained diabetes dogs.

A diabetes dog needs to be “sniffy” and “social”, says Ian Ashworth, the Foundation’s director of program development.

Nara’s nose is fine-tuned and active. She is also friendly, making her the much-needed close companion of someone who must watch his blood sugar levels every moment of the day.

That will be Nara’s job, once she finishes the training period. Alex hopes she will accompany him to Cardinal Carter Catholic High School in Aurora this spring and next year, the University of Western Ontario in London to study philosophy and forensic sciences.

She is still a little excitable, so for now, they work on her “tricks” and share outings — Nara sporting her new red service dog uniform — to the local coffee shop and grocery store. She sleeps beside his bed to wake him should his blood sugar plummet at night.

DOGS IN SCHOOLS Service dogs in schools remain a rarity, but their presence can still be controversial.

Not everyone is open to canines in the classroom.

In York region, the Catholic school board has one service dog (at Cardinal Carter, the same school to which Alex Bevilacqua hopes to bring Nara) and the public board has two, for students with autism.Two students had dogs for blind, low vision and deaf/ blind disabilities in the public system, but they have since moved on to university.

Both boards have a lengthy process when a request is made to allow a service dog in schools.

“Each situation is unique,” said Tina D’Acunto, superintendent of eduction, exceptional learners.

“It’s a challenge for the school board to understand what the appropriate accommodation is and to determine if the student’s need can only be addressed with a service dog.”

With schools being scent-free and cognizant of allergies, phobias, religious and cultural sensitivities,“we have to make sure it’s the right fit.We’re trying to meet everyone’s needs.”

The separate board has a detailed decision-making protocol to be followed with extensive consultation, taking into account the needs of the dog-owning student balanced with needs of other students and staff at the school.

The public board is developing a new protocol as the use of dogs for service becomes more prevalent, said Steven Reid, superintendent of student services.

Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty tabled the 2014 budget Tuesday with promises of renewed prosperity and a brighter future for Canadians, but the opposition parties labelled it a “do-nothing” plan and accused the government of neglecting the needs of the people for political gain.

Conservative York-Simcoe MP Peter Van Loan welcomed the budget, saying it offered significant benefits for residents of his riding.

He echoed Mr. Flaherty’s focus on job creation, while also touting the pledges to maintain economic growth and hold the line on taxes.

“Our government is on track to balance the budget by 2015, while continuing to deliver on our commitments to Canadians to invest in creating jobs, keep taxes low and save Canadians money,” the government house leader said in a statement. “The average family is now saving $3,400 a year in taxes and we have created over a million jobs.

“We will continue to focus on the real priorities of Canadians and deliver results.”

Beyond those measures, Mr. Van Loan also pointed to the creation of the Canada Apprentice Loan program, more support for youth apprenticeships and the elimination of the value of student-owned vehicles when determining eligibility for student loans as key highlights for his constituents.

Beyond that, the government plans to launch the Canada Job Grant along with an enhanced

job matching service, while also investing in the automotive, forestry and mining sectors.

In addition to jobs, the federal government also plans to increase competition and lower prices in the telecommunications market, introduce legislation to prohibit unjustified cross-border price difference and eliminate the practice of pay-to-pay billing.

And while Mr. Flaherty says there will be no new taxes, smokers will have a little less money to burn. That’s because taxes on cigarettes will rise by $4 per carton, a measure expected to add about $700 million to the federal coffers.

Mr. Flaherty also talked up the fact that the government will balance the budget in 2015.

The deficit for 2014-15 will ring in at about $2.9 billion, while 2015-16 expects to see a $6.4-billion surplus.

The budget prompted applause from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.

“We’re pleased and encouraged that Stephen Harper and Jim Flaherty are on track to keep their election promise and balance the budget in 2014-15,” said CTF federal director Gregory Thomas.

The NDP called it a do-nothing budget that failed to address concerns of families in the Toronto area. The party accused the government of withholding real assistance until next year — an election year.

“Telling Canadians who need help now to wait is disappointing and opportunistic,” NDP finance critic Peggy Nash said.

Regulation of home inspection industry needed, say Ontario realtors O ntario realtors want to see the home inspection industry in the province regulated, and they are working with the Ministry of Consumer Services to make it happen. The Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA) backed the government’s efforts to enhance consumer protection this week by responding to, “A Closer Look: Qualifying Ontario’s Home Inspectors,” an independent findings report that recommends regulation of the home inspection industry. January 27 was the final day for public review and feedback on the report.

“For prospective buyers, the information

disclosed in a home inspection may influence their decision to buy a home,” says Phil Dorner, president of the Ontario Real Estate Association. “Professionals with this much influence should be licensed and have proper training.”

Currently in Ontario, anyone can call themselves a home inspector. In October 2012, The Minister of Consumer Services, the Honourable Tracy MacCharles, committed to working with home inspection associations, consumer advocates, and real estate industry representatives on mandatory qualifications for home inspectors to enhance consumer protection. In August

2013, the Minister asked a volunteer panel of experts to review home inspector qualifications in Ontario. The panel developed a report with 35 recommendations for the home inspection industry.

“One of our main recommendations is to establish parameters for licensing the industry,” says Johnmark Roberts, the panel’s realtor representative. “Regulating the industry will help ensure homebuyers and sellers receive reliable, informative and professional advice when making one of the largest decisions of their lives. We are proud to work with Minister MacCharles and her government to regulate the home

The panel’s report and any public feedback the ministry receives will guide the government as it considers whether to bring forward legislation to establish qualifications for home inspectors.

Create a lighting scheme that works for the kitchen

W

hen designing a kitchen, homeowners typically give substantial consideration to many elements of their dream design, including cabinet and countertop materials and which brand of appliances they most prefer. But few may consider the lighting for the room as thoroughly.

Lighting is an important consideration in any room, but most especially in the kitchen, where people tend to gravitate and spend a good portion of their time. The right lighting can have a dramatic effect on the functionality of the kitchen, including how the space feels when you enter it. The right blend of lights can create a vibrant mood in the kitchen, while light can be adjusted according to what needs to get done in the space.

Establishing a lighting plan in a kitchen requires a combination of different lights. The main focus should be on three distinct lighting types: task lighting, ambient lighting and accent lighting.

Task Lighting Task light is beneficial anywhere a person will need to perform tasks that require close concentration, such as chopping vegetables.

Task lighting shines direct light onto a surface, illuminating it thoroughly, and it can be turned off when it is not needed.

Task lighting is generally placed above counters and islands where one will be slicing vegetables and preparing food. There may be lighting over the sink to illuminate dirty dishes.

If a kitchen has a desk area, lighting above the desk will make that area more functional.

Many task lighting designs include lights under cabinetry to shine down onto counters and eliminate shadowed recesses. Under-cabinet lighting is a relatively inexpensive add-on for existing kitchens. Homeowners can add lighting afterward to focus more light onto countertops.

Ambient Lighting Ambient lighting is another name for all-over lighting that fills a room. During the day, ambient light may stream in from windows and skylights. However, at night, ambient lighting is created by different light fixtures in a room.

In the kitchen, overhead fixtures are a popular choice for ambient lighting. A blend of hanging pendant lamps, chandeliers and recessed lighting can create the amount of light needed.

Homeowners should pay special attention to the bulbs and fixtures they choose, as not all produce the same amount of light. Those concerned about energy efficiency also must give mind to whether the bulbs will use a lot of energy or last a long time. Compact fluorescent bulbs as well as LED lighting are long-lasting and do not use as much energy as incandescent bulbs.

Indirect ambient lighting softens shadows in a room, creating a warm, inviting glow. It is an important layer of light that is often overlooked in the kitchen. Setting ambient lighting on a dimmer enables homeowners to cast a mood that is desired when the kitchen isn’t being used for prep work.

Accent Lighting If there are key elements around the kitchen that a person would like to highlight, such as a china set, accent lighting can do the trick. Spotlights can be used to show off collectibles, while a subtle strip of lighting can illuminate a wall of artwork. Many people like to install accent lighting inside of cabinetry to create dramatic focal points.

Some homeowners may want to incorporate decorative lighting in their kitchens. This is the use of ornate chandeliers, hanging pendants and other eye-catching fixtures. Decorative lighting

should be considered in proportion to the size of the kitchen. Therefore, smaller kitchens will have smaller fixtures and vice versa. Decorative lighting may be the most expensive type of kitchen lighting, so some homeowners prefer to plan ahead for the inclusion of decorative accents by having the wiring ready and then adding the fixtures over time.

Lighting in a kitchen can be just as important as which appliances and other accessories homeowners choose for their kitchens. Without the right mix of lighting, the kitchen may not be functional or inviting.

Richmond Hill dog lovers got the green light Monday night for more leash-free parks in the municipality, but not everyone sees this as tail-wagging news.

Residents living near the Tower Hill offleash facility are threatening to take the town to court after council’s decision to keep open the town’s two current dog parks and investigate opening two more.

Olga Gerber, of Moraine Ridge Drive near the original Tower Hill park, said 14 residents have launched a statement of claim against the town and are seeking $2.5 million in damages.

Ms Gerber said the group is seeking six more claimants in order to file a class action lawsuit.

The off-leash facility brought noise, dog feces, traffic and crosswalk safety concerns to their neighbourhood, said husband Yuri Gerber, who appeared as a delegation before council Monday. Ms Gerber called for the town to convert the dog park to a smaller community park.

As part of its final decision, councillors agreed to set aside $15,000 to mitigate some of the problems reported by residents.

Councillor David West of Ward 4, where the Tower Hill park is located, said funds could help pay for the perimeter fence to be moved, should that prove necessary, when large trees are planted to act as a buffer between the park and nearby homes.

Monitoring of the park has shown there is no more excess noise than any other type of open space use such as soccer fields or baseball diamonds, Mr. Perrelli said, so planting trees or moving fences is not necessary.

The Tower Hill park, at Tower Hill and Yonge Street, north of Gamble Road, was opened as a pilot project in 2009 and a second, larger off-leash facility opened at Phyllis Rawlinson in the fall of 2012.

York Police part of Safe Internet Day York Regional Police took part in a program Tuesday that promotes safety online.

Feb. 11 was Safe Internet Day, with the goal to raise awareness about the possible dangers for children online.

Part of the reason behind the day is to promote cybertip.ca, a website you can use to report online child exploitation.

It features an easy-to-use format.

Since its inception in 2002, the website has led police to respond to more than 94,000 cases of child sexual exploitation.

This has resulted in the arrest of more than 125 people and several children being rescued from abusive situations here and around the world.

You are reminded of a few tips while online: • Never give out personal information including name, address, telephone number or computer password without knowing specifically with whom you’re speaking; • Children should be supervised by an adult and should stay away from websites that are not first approved by their parent or guardian and; • Web cameras can be accessed remotely and should not be placed anywhere private For more information on what you can do to protect your family from internet danger, visit yrp.ca

Count birds, go for hike this weekend You can explore the great outdoors this weekend, by participating in a back yard bird count and a Jefferson Forest hike.

The back yard bird count takes place Friday through Monday, Feb. 14 to 17. Officially called the Great Back Yard Bird Count, the annual four-day event recruits watchers of all ages counting birds to update yearly data on bird information.

Beginner watchers to experts are welcome to this event. This free, fun, and easy activity actually helps birds and scientists!

Participants will tally the number of individual birds of each species they see during their count period. Numbers are then entered on the GBBC website.

The count is a fun learning experience for

all, as participants will help scientists learn more about different bird species.

It was great weather for great times this past weekend at the 46th annual Richmond Hill Winter Carnival.

The sun, snow and ice on the Mill Pond made perfect conditions for an estimated 12,000 to 15,000 visitors who flocked to the village core Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

That’s way up over last year’s event that was beset with no ice and frigid (-30 C) weather, said carnival chairperson Michele Bussieres.

Carnival buttons sold out — something that hasn’t happened in years — and the crowd Sunday was even larger than on Saturday, said Ward 4 Councillor David West.

“I think total attendance was more

than I can remember in the past four or five years,” said Mr. West.

Richmond Hill Fire Department got top bunk in the popular bed race event. The firefighters’ team earned first place on Saturday, while the St. John’s Ambulance team, First Responders’ bed, placed second in the race that sees teams of five racing against each other, pushing a big metal bed frame across the ice.

Top honours in the wing-eating contest was claimed Christopher R., who scarfed down 3.5 lbs of chicken wings in less than eight minutes.

The wings were prepared in the signature King Henry’s Arms Jacko style, starting with a medium sauce,

then successively hot and suicide sauces.

The wing-eating winner receives a pound of free wings every week for a year at King Henry’s Arms in Richmond Hill.

1. Make Ice lanterns: The village of Vuollerim hosts an annual frozen lights presentation in February called The 1000 Lights Festival. You don’t have to fly off to Sweden to see it, you can make your own light

festival at home. Make ice lanterns by using two buckets or containers of any shape to form lanterns when the layer of water between them freezes. Use tape to hold the containers together while the water freezes.

Loosen molds with a little warm water. Place candles inside them to light your garden or patio. Make a few lanterns and line your driveway with them or make some for your neighbours. Freeze coloured waterfilled balloons and decorate your

7. Snowman and snow fort construction is inevitably followed by snowball play for everyone. Again, adults should make sure this snow building fun is safe for children.

9. Make use of recreation programs in your nearby community centre, as well as programs hosted by your local library branch. Some of these programs are free and some require a small fee.

12. Enjoy reading together. The local library is a good place to get books and other resources and membership is free.

13. Multi-piece puzzles are a good way to gather around a table and work together to build a puzzle and share some laughs and conversation while you do it. Build the puzzle on a large moveable tray, so it can be moved if necessary.

The Town of Richmond Hill will keep you and your family busy this Family Day. Families can enjoy a fun-filled day of programs and activities for all ages, Monday.

At Bayview Hill Community Centre and Pool, located at 114 Spadina Rd., the following activities are offered: yoga, basketball, preschool gym time, table tennis, youth hoops, floor hockey, badminton, arts and crafts, and more.

At Oak Ridges Community Centre, located at 12895 Bayview Ave., Richmond Hill; the following activities are offered: table tennis, family yoga, Wii and board games, arts and crafts, fitness classes, low ropes course, basketball, preschool activities, and more.

Refreshments and food will be available for a small fee.

To participate in activities, you must purchase a Play All Day Pass for $5 each or a family pass for $15. Passes can be purchased starting Feb. 17, at the Bayview Hill Community Centre and at Oak Ridgesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Community Centre. The pass can be used at both community centres.

Ever dream of travelling to the stars?

It’s not as farfetched as you may think.

The technology for interstellar travel is within reach, scientists say. But you may not want to put it on your bucket list just yet.

There are still a few snags in the way.

What those snags are, and when we might be able to put star travel on our itinerary, are topics on tap for Friday night’s lecture in Richmond Hill, “Search for Extraterrestrials” at the Langstaff Community Centre. It’s part of the David Dunlap Observatory Defenders Evenings with the Astronomers winter lecture series, exploring life elsewhere in the universe.

Ian Shelton, a PhD astronomer hosting the series, says the first snag that is stalling your trip to the stars is the amount of money and time the trek would take.

You could, in theory, travel anywhere in the universe exploiting the technology we already have, but by the time you got back to tell your friends and family about it, he says, they would be long gone.

“If you’re making the trip at the speed of light, you won’t age, but it would still take 10,000 years to get to the centre of our galaxy,” he explains.

So while you’re cruising through the cosmos, time goes on for everyone else not sharing that spacecraft with you.

“By the time you come back, after 20,000

years or so, with your notebook full and all kinds of great videos and you’re ready to tell everyone about it, they wouldn’t be there anymore.”

The second snag: finding someone to foot the bill for your journey.

“The big question is, how much money do we want to throw at this?”

Let’s say we decide it’s premature to send humans out there, but we still want to know more. Scientists can make atoms and molecules travel the speed of light, and we could build a little space probe that could record the trip and send it to the closest star — a relatively short jaunt of just four years.

That is entirely feasible, he says. The probe could take some close-up photos and return home in eight or nine years.

But that trip would extend through two U.S. government administrations, and cost tens of billions of dollars. How likely is that?

“The technology is known to us; we know what we need to do. It’d take decades to build, though, and the whole world’s economy would be directed to the glory of sending someone off to space, never to see them again.

“The amazing thing is, we do have the ability to do it.”

That’s why the he and his wife, fellow astronomer Tuba Koktay, are hosting this public dialogue about UFOs, extraterrestrials and travel to the stars.

these mysteries and the answers are out there, so close, and yet so far.

Research has shown in the last few years that there are more than 1,000 planets outside our solar system. With so many possible earth-like orbs, and so much life here in our own world, it’s natural to wonder, why isn’t life everywhere?

“It’s not going to be as easy to find as we’d like,” he says. “We’ve been looking for more than 50 years, with the best thinking and best tools, and there’s nothing so far to prove there’s life out there.”

Mankind could learn a lot, he adds, by checking out another planet — Mars maybe — that has not yet been spoiled by human

beings.

And that brings us to the third, and perhaps toughest hurdle to overcome in our pursuit of interstellar travel.

“If we’re going to these places, we don’t want to contaminate them with ourselves.

We haven’t shown much respect for our own planet,” he says. “If a single bacteria from earth could survive out there, it could get out of hand quickly.”

He points to what happened in Australia, where animals that did not have predators were introduced and became invasive species, threatening the native biodiversity.

“We think we’re clever, until nature proves we’re not really that bright.”

He was trying to plan this date for weeks.

Every weekend it was going to rain. Whatever he had planned it would be best on a sunny day. But alas, I was tired of waiting, so I didn’t care if it rained. Let’s just do it.

At the start of a long drive up north, he kept complaining about stomach pains. Maybe he ate something bad. He kept going on and on, saying he should have gone to the bathroom first. He had to stop. Great, our special date was going to be ruined!

Going up the 404 I suggested Tim’s.Too far. Buttonville Airport’s Druxy’s? He was surprised I suggested the airport, and agreed. I parked the truck so he could run in. When he came back, I was curious and asked if it was worth a look around.Again, he was surprised, and again agreed.All this was working out perfectly for him. He told me to grab my bags. Grab my bags?? Then it dawned on me…we’re going on a plane ride!

We were greeted at the door by our private pilot who asked if I knew what was happening today. I said no. Well, up we go on a cloudy, misty, rainy morning, to the lake where I first met him 7 years earlier. He had me wait at the point on a rock. It was Sat. Oct. 4 and only plus 4 degrees. How long was I going to wait? Then around the corner he appears in my parents’ tippy yellow canoe that I first approached him in. Upon docking, he gets down on one knee and PROPOSES! Complete with wine and glasses produced from within his jacket! It was worth the wait. We’re celebrating our 10th anniversary next month!

The Richmond Hill Lightning skated off with a pair of wins in National Ringette League action on the weekend.

Buoyed by a pair of goals from Karen Duguay, the Lightning downed the Lac St. Louis Adrenaline 5-3 at Tom Graham Arena Sunday.

Trailing 2-1 after one period, the Lightning gained the upper hand in the second period courtesy of two goals from Duguay.

After a scoreless third period, the Lightning got goals from Samantha Nosal and Paige Nosal, while surrendering just one to win the game.

The victory by the Lightning came on the heels of a 7-5 win over the visiting Rive Sud Revolution Saturday.

Trailing 2-0 after the first period, the Lightning got a pair of goals in the second to tie the game and then erupted with four goals in the third period and never looked back.

Brianna Thompson recorded the hat trick for the Lightning while Jessica Jones added a pair and Paige Nosal and Samantha Nosal added single tallies.

With the two wins, the Lightning solidified their hold of fourth place with a 13-7-2-28 record.

The Lightning will take to the road for a pair of games against the Gloucester Devils, occupants of fifth place with an 11-9-3-25 record at 1:30 p.m. this Saturday followed by a tilt later that day against the third-place Ottawa Ice (17-3-135) at 5:30 p.m.
