ket. "I spent a few nights ... with two sleeping bags, two tarps wrapped around me," he said, adding his breath frosted around his face. "It’s not easy." He has been homeless in York Region on and off for more than three years. "It is like living one of your worst nightmares every day, until you get housing," he said. But he wants to live a better life and is attending a new program offered by Inn From the Cold in Newmarket. "I have been struggling for a while trying to get a little bit more ahead ... ever since I lost my house," he said. "This seemed something positive and in the right direction." Getting Ahead is an eightweek, 16-session program that began Oct. 17 and is designed to help homeless individuals build the needed resources to improve their lives. "I’m hoping something good can come from it, so we can help other people who are in similar situations," said Melodie Coulton, Doyon’s girlfriend, who was also in the program. "Because when you are struggling and you are homeless, any little bit counts." Doyon has a job, but because of a number of circumstances, including injury and health issues, he struggles to find housing. He started one of the tent cities in Newmarket and has rented places, he said, but there have been difficulties. "A lot of the places that you can afford ... are places in the patch," he said, describing it as the "ghetto of Newmarket." "There are people up drinking all night or smoking crack all night ... it is really hard to keep a job or get any sleep," he said. Coulton, who has been homeless since June, would like to go back to school and find a job where she can help others. Despite their ambitions, homeless people can face a num-

New program helps homeless people get ahead ’I have been struggling for a while trying to get a little bit more ahead ... ever since I lost my house.’ LAURA FINNEY lfinney@yrmg.com ber of challenges when trying to get out of their situation. "When you are, say, in a tent, for example, you try and get up first thing in the morning, get ready for work, make it there on time," said Coulton, adding finding transportation, food is difficult. "Every day is a struggle; we are just trying to survive." And a lot of people do not

have addresses or phones, she added. Ann Watson, executive director with Inn From the Cold said they are running the program because it is difficult for their clients to get ahead. "When they come to us, they just feel like they are stuck," added Ashley Martin, the Getting Ahead co-ordinator.

She described the program as "client led," that guides participants through a workbook to identify needed resources to get ahead. "They are the ones leading their journey," she said. This is the first time the program will run in York Region and is funded by a seed grant from the Ontario Trillium Foun-

dation. The first section takes a look at the participants’ lives and uses visual aspects to self-examine their living situations. "I’m projecting there is going to be a lot of raw emotion in the beginning," Martin said. "They know they are homeless, we don’t have to tell them that. When you actually see it on paper, it becomes so much more real for them." Then they look where they would like to be in three months, she said. "The shorter goal, the more attainable it potentially may be," said Martin. "A lot of them can’t even think past one day." She said even running an eight-week program is a big challenge, but Inn From the Cold tries to help remove barriers by providing transportation tickets, breakfast and lunch. The program also helps guide the participants through "the hidden rules of the economic class" and learning about available resources, said Martin. She hopes the participants feel a sense of accomplishment from the program. "I just hope that it is a positive experience for them and they can see that there is a future," she said, adding the program is the easy part. There is also an aftercare piece to ensure participants are still on track. "And let them know you are one of their resources, and you are their support," she said. Looking ahead, Doyon and Coulton want to find housing and use what they learn to give back. "If you can learn something, get further ahead, then maybe one day you can be on the other side of it and be helping people," said Doyon. There will be a second session of the program in January. The Inn From the Cold winter shelter service will be opening Nov. 6 from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. until March. They have a number of upcoming fundraisers to support their services and programs. Town of Richmond Hill approves negotiations with a variety of partners to make DDO a destination TERESA LATCHFORD tlatchford@yrmg.com The David Dunlap Observatory will soon offer educational and public outreach programing. Richmond Hill council recently approved a proposal tabled by town staff to begin to negotiate programming partnership agreements for the local landmark. Following a public proposal process, five submissions were received and it was decided the town would pursue a joint partnership with the Royal Astronomical Soci-

ety of Canada Toronto Centre (RASC-TC) and the David Dunlap Observatory Defenders (DDOD). "We are extremely excited to have been accepted by the town," DDOD’s Ian Shelton said. "We want to help make the DDO a destination people know and love." Now, the organization is focusing on hashing out a business plan that will include daytime school groups learning curriculum-specific material, public presentations and hosting community groups like the Scouts in the evenings. "We focus on teaching astronomy and science, thing like where the seasons come from," he said. "Visits to the grand telescope and watching all 25 tonnes of it adjusted by hand is fascinating." Other programming will include events, public viewing nights, key speaker lectures and training workshops.

gramming to be in place by January. Early in 2016, council announced ownership of both the observatory dome and administration building on the DDO lands were transferred from Corsica Developments to Richmond Hill. Lease negotiations began for exclusive use by the RASC-TC but those negotiations fell through. However, the members who had been using, maintaining and programming the site wanted to carry on under another name, the York Region Astronomical Association (YRAA). Town staff declined and waited for council’s direction on how to proceed. The town then invited 35 organizations to bring forward proposals from those interested in programming. Each of the five applicants who submitted proposals also made a presentation and answered questions asked by town staff.

PM must be ready for post-NAFTA world

TheLiberal.

U.S. president Donald Trump’s ongoing game of chicken with the North American Free Trade Agreement is no doubt wreaking havoc on the blood pressure levels of many business people across Canada. Trump voiced his displeasure with NAFTA during the election campaign, but who could have guessed he would be consistent on the file after taking office? After all, this is the man who promised to release his tax reforms, replace Obamacare with "insurance for everybody," create 25 million jobs, raise the minimum wage, not take vacations, end violent crime in Chicago and create an "artistically beautiful" wall on the Mexican border. Trump’s distaste for NAFTA has not only survived the chaos of a dysfunctional White House, but has also infected talks, as American demands become increasingly untenable. So, it’s likely many are wondering what happens if Trump scuttles the deal that has seen Canada and Mexico become the two largest destinations for U.S. exports since NAFTA was initiated in 1994. The answer is no one is quite sure. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said Ottawa will be ready for any eventuality, but he’s not about to reveal any game plan. Legally, experts suggest we would revert back to preNAFTA Canada-U. S. trade agreements. Failing that, our relations would be subject to World Trade Organization rules. But, would anyone doubt Trump’s willingness to impose duties on anything and everything, in blatant disregard for bilateral deals he had nothing to do with negotiating? Dissolution of NAFTA alone could create seismic tremors for Canadian companies conditioned to having unfettered access to the U.S. Who knows what impact tariffs would have on Canada’s economy? Of course, the U.S. Congress could have something to say about all this. Congress wields constitutional power over international commerce/duties and it’s possible that it may act to preserve access to a enticing Mexican market so charmingly free of labour and environmental standards. But that would mean more conflict with a president who is already irate over his inability to dismantle his predecessor’s health care program. NAFTA’s fate could even land in U.S. Supreme Court. All this upheaval is not necessarily inevitable. A sliver of hope emerged when Trump acknowledged the possibility of a two-way agreement with Canada. Our PM needs to jump on this opportunity, should NAFTA talks stumble. Trudeau may support a renewed NAFTA, but as he is charged with protecting Canada’s interests and not Mexico’s, he needs to be open to an exclusive free-trade agreement between Canada and the U.S.

• LETTERS & COMMENTARY • We need a referendum on pot A couple weeks ago I attended a town hall in at the Cornell Centre in Markham where Jane Philpott and Bill Blair were lobbying for the legalization of pot. One of the many questions asked of the former police chief was why if you say you are pursuing legalization is to keep it out of the hands of minors does your bill allow children from the age of 12 to 18 to possess up to five grams of weed which is enough make five single joints, and allow people 18 and over (high school and beyond) to carry up to 30 grams each. His reply for the 200-plus residents in the audience was that it’s just not true. I came home and reread

the governments bill online and it clearly does contain the points noted above which clearly states these points on possession and soon will become law. This pot bill and legalization will be a transformational change to our country and we cant trust the feds alone to make this our law, so I purpose we have a national referendum on legalization, decriminalization, or leave the laws as is. Let the people of Canada decide on such an important issue and not just a select few whose purpose to legalization is very self serving. We also must remember that Trudeau won the last election with only 39 per cent of the vote which means that fully 61 per cent do not support this agenda or even give them a mandate to pursue this wrong-

Treatment of Muzzo sends wrong message Re: "Another year dead and gone": Marco Muzzo moves to minimum security prison, Sept. 29. It is hard to believe that Marco Muzzo is being allowed to enjoy unescorted temporary absence from prison after 18 months of a 10-year sentence. That’s outrageous. He had killed four innocent people and injured others due to his irresponsibility. I believe the correctional service in Canada needs to have more empathy for the victims. It is sending a wrong message to those who kill while impaired, knowing

that they get away with murder. Alfred Tsang

Why not bail out Sears? Re: Sears Canada announces it’s going out of business, Oct. 10. While it is laudable that our government welcomes refugees and in doing so alleviates the suffering of the immigrants by spending millions of dollars for their rehabilitation, closer home, would it not be equally if not more relevant that they bail out Sears Canada and thereby prevent the loss of 12,000 jobs? I hope they do give a thought and help our citizens and their families, some of whom may have served the store for decades. Phiroze Amroliwalla

The Great Escape: Author talks war history Event will support GranAurora, Stephen Lewis Foundation LAURA FINNEY lfinney@yrmg.com When Port Hope native George Sweanor hung his laundry while a prisoner at a German PoW compound, he was not drying his clothes. He was using code. "Every time he moved his stuff on the laundry line ... he was telling the next guy in the security chain who was just about to walk in the main gate," said Ted Barris, journalist, author and broadcaster. Sweanor was one of many Canadians who was part of the mythical Great Escape, a story from the Second World War made famous by the 1963 movie starring Steve McQueen. But according to Barris, some of the elements in the movie and the book, written by Paul Brickhill, are missing. Specifically, the Canadian elements. "While technically proficient and accurate for the most part, it tended not to give the characters in the story as accurate a portrayal as I think they deserved," he said. The Great Escape tells the story of 80 commonwealth airmen who escaped the PoW compound through a tunnel. Barris’ book The Great Escape: A Canadian Story, released in 2013, explores the Canadian side of that story. Some of the Canadians included the PoW who designed the tunnel, the principal tunnel excavators, the chief of security

He started working on the book after discovering one of the people from the story, Tony Pengelly, was an old neighbour. Barris reached out to Pengelly’s son, Chris. A Toronto oncologist reached out to a fellow oncologist in New York at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center to review Jebreil’s case. The oncologist has agreed to provide an opinion letter, which will cost the family $5,000 alone. It will take additional funds if Jebreil is required to travel to the United States for examination and it is unknown how long he would have to remain across the border. "I have no words for what my daughter is doing for her brother, but I am very proud of her," he said. To donate, visit Gofundme.com/arp85t-savemy-brother.

she said. "I want to be able to still do that." Jebreil had just completed his masters in chemistry and was planning to pursue his PhD when he was diagnosed with germ cell cancer in his right lung and liver, said Mohammed. His son then underwent chemotherapy and surgery. Following his recovery, it was discovered the liver cancer had transitioned to his bone marrow, meaning he stopped producing red blood cell platelets. A rare form of cancer known as rhabdomyosarcoma. He was soon transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto where he received a palliative visit and informed he had anywhere from two months to two years before the cancer claimed his life. "I couldn’t live with that," Mohammed said. "I don’t know what it is going to cost, but we are looking for a second opinion."

Aliya Syed couldn’t just sit back and do nothing when her older brother is in need. The 13-year-old Richmond Hill resident immediately began thinking when her father, Mohammed told her Jebreil, 28, had been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and would require travel to the United States to see an oncologist in New York. "I knew my dad wouldn’t be able to come up with the money for Jebreil," she said. "I had heard about Go Fund Me on social media and started a page to help." The goal is to raise $50,000 through the fundraising page called Save My Brother and so far she has raised over $10,000 through family and friends. "I really live to hang out and talk to my brother,"

TERESA LATCHFORD tlatchford@yrmg.com Students from Kettle Lakes Public School are chipping in to improve Richmond Hill’s urban canopy. More than 60 students recently cared for 300 trees and shrubs they had planted last year in addition to planting new trees at Grovewood Park. Richmond Hill, York Region and LEAF have been working together with other community partners to increase the canopy cover. Mayor Dave Barrow and councillors also planted three ceremonial trees during the event. "The urban forest is a very important asset that faces serious threats," York Region forestry program manager James Lane said. "In light of challenges like Emerald Ash Borer and other invasive species, as well as the complicating effects of climate change, it’s more important than ever that we work with our partners to grow our urban canopy. "That’s why events like this one are cause for celebration." York Region encourages residents to love their yards by working in partnership with LEAF that offers practical assistance

COLD CASE

’He’s someone, but he’s not’ Unidentified human remains of man found near Vaughan storm pond JEREMY GRIMALDI jgrimaldi@yrmg.com Dying in obscurity is an indignity that no individual should face. That’s why York Regional Police Cold Case Investigator Det. Bill Courtice is so intent on finding out who’s remains were found near a Vaughan storm pond in 2005. Society has long since moved on from news of this man’s demise, but there are at least two people who continue to seek information about who he was. "Here we are 12 years removed from his discovery ... what a way to go," he said. "Even if it was his choice to be living away from society you would still like to think there’s someone there at the last moments. It’s human nature to want someone there to give support even if he wanted solitude." It was on May 18 workers employed by the Ministry of the Environment studying the Asian Longhorn Beetle, discovered a partially decomposed skull, limbs and bones and a slew of goods consistent with the belongings of a homeless individual. The remains and items were located in brush, near to 7211 Pine Valley Drive. Although it’s unlikely we’ll ever know when the man passed away, there are clues, from one of yorkregion.com’s own newspapers. Among his items, the Jan. 9, 2005 Vaughan Citizen was located, meaning prior to that date he was likely alive. He was surrounded by his world’s meagre belongings including a Hespeler hockey bag full of clothes and even some sporting equipment including shin pads. There was a pair of badly warn shoes, a walking

A reconstruction bust depicting the possible appearance of an unidentified man prior to his demise. stick, a bin of rotting food and another newspaper The National Post, dated Nov. 23, 2004. His physical details are as unremarkable as the goods found surrounding his remains, some of which were left scattered, possibly by scavenging animals in the area. He was found to be white, between the ages of 50 and 80-year-old, between five feet nine inches and six feet three inches. The man was suffering severe degenerative disease of the spine, the loss of many teeth, and arthritis. He also appeared to have been missing part of a finger according to police. The cause of death remains undetermined. "It’s sad, someone dies in the middle of a field and no one cares, but we do," said Det. Courtice. "He could be someone’s dad or granddad. Somewhere he must have had friends or loved ones. It just shows

how vulnerable we really are." This man is one of two cases involving unidentified human remains in York Region. The others belong to a transgendered male in the 1980s. But it would be folly to assume the man found in 2005 was from York Region Det. Courtice said, explaining that many people living this way of life are transient. For example, Courtice located a real estate flyer from Stoney Creek among the items found near the remains. Written on the card are a series of notes, which without some more information appear nonsensical. He now hopes that someone might be able to decipher what appear to be equations or recognize the handwriting. For the complete story, visit yorkregion.com

Explore some of York Region’s oldest churches One of the best ways to learn about a community’s past is through its historic buildings. York Region is home to several and among the best preserved are its churches, some of which are more than 170 years old.

1

Holy Trinity Church, Vaughan This Anglican church, at 140 Brooke St. in Thornhill was built in 1830. It has undergone some changes during the last 187 years, including being picked up and moved from its original location on the west side of Yonge Street to its current location on Brooke Street.

2

Holland Landing Christ Church, East Gwillimbury This red brick Anglican church, which sits atop a hill at 110 Peter St. in Holland Landing, opened in 1843. It was built on a half acre of land donated by Chief Justice John Robinson. The single-storey, gothic pointed church was designed by architect John G. Howard.

3

Thornhill Presbyterian Church, Vaughan The Greek Revival-style church, at 7788 Yonge St. in Thornhill, was built in 1846. The father of Dragon’s Den star Michael Wekerle purchased it in 1994 and renamed it St. Michael’s Chapel. It was at the heart of a family feud involving Wekerle’s sisters and their mother, according to media reports.

St. Luke’s Roman Catholic Church, Markham The simple, frame-structure church was built by Thornhill carpenter John Edey in 1847 at 15 Church Lane. The congregation moved to a new church and sold the old one to Ukrainian Catholics in 1972, it was renamed. St. Volodymyr’s Ukrainian Catholic Church. St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, King This fieldstone church, also known as Eversley Presbyterian Church, was built in 1848 and served as a place of worship for 110 years. It’s now in use as part of the York Pioneer Historical Society. Sources: Region of York, City of Vaughan, King Township
